Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.64\00:00:18.57 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to be continuing 00:00:18.60\00:00:21.89 in the book of Esther. But before we start, 00:00:21.92\00:00:23.75 Let's pray together. Dear God, thank you for the story of 00:00:23.78\00:00:28.54 Esther and for the lessons that you have for each of us. 00:00:28.57\00:00:32.50 As we hear now, please send the Holy Spirit to bring comfort 00:00:32.53\00:00:36.98 to our hearts that you have the power to deliver us 00:00:37.01\00:00:39.86 even from the darkest of circumstances. Thank you so much 00:00:39.89\00:00:43.79 for loving us and we love you. Amen. 00:00:43.82\00:00:46.11 We're reading in the story of Esther about how a decree has 00:00:46.14\00:00:51.36 gone out that all of the Jews should be murdered. 00:00:51.39\00:00:54.47 And Mordecai has told Esther that she needs to go in before 00:00:54.50\00:00:59.96 the king and plead for the life of her people; 00:00:59.99\00:01:02.62 even though the king has not yet, up unto this point realized 00:01:02.65\00:01:06.12 that his queen is a Jew. And as I thought about this story 00:01:06.15\00:01:10.64 of Esther and what we're read so far, it occurred to me that 00:01:10.67\00:01:14.60 there are lessons for us - many wonderful lessons for us in the 00:01:14.63\00:01:19.14 story, even though in our times the role of women and the 00:01:19.17\00:01:23.36 practices of the court of the king seem foreign to us, or 00:01:23.39\00:01:27.75 seem something unreal. In Esther's life, she sought 00:01:27.78\00:01:33.24 council from wise councilors and she followed it. 00:01:33.27\00:01:36.19 And that's an example for us. And even more importantly we're 00:01:36.22\00:01:40.44 right up to the point we're going to pick up this story 00:01:40.47\00:01:42.51 just before Esther went in before the king 00:01:42.54\00:01:45.75 without permission, which is punishable by death, 00:01:45.78\00:01:48.30 unless the king extended his sceptre. Before taking this 00:01:48.33\00:01:52.41 step, Esther prayed and she asked her people to pray 00:01:52.45\00:01:56.52 with her. And that is also a lesson that each of us can take 00:01:56.55\00:02:00.02 into our lives that in whatever we're facing, make it a matter 00:02:00.05\00:02:03.64 of prayer before we take that bold step. Esther and 00:02:03.67\00:02:07.73 the Israelites fasted and prayed for three days. 00:02:07.76\00:02:10.72 And then she went before the king and the king did extend 00:02:10.75\00:02:14.36 her favor and his sceptre, and were going to pick up the story 00:02:14.39\00:02:18.39 now in the book of Esther, chapter 5, verse 3. 00:02:18.42\00:02:22.78 This is the King James Version. Then said the king unto her, 00:02:22.81\00:02:27.42 What wilt thou, queen Esther? and what is thy request? 00:02:27.45\00:02:31.33 it shall be given thee, even to the half of the kingdom. 00:02:31.36\00:02:34.81 And Esther answered, If it seem good unto the king, let the king 00:02:34.84\00:02:40.36 and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared 00:02:40.39\00:02:44.64 for him. Then the king said, Cause Haman to make haste, 00:02:44.67\00:02:48.82 that he may do as Esther hath said. So the king and Haman 00:02:48.85\00:02:53.35 came to the banquet that Esther had prepared. 00:02:53.38\00:02:55.91 And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine, 00:02:55.94\00:03:00.08 What is thy petition? and it shall be granted thee: 00:03:00.11\00:03:03.26 and what is thy request? even to half of the kingdom it shall be 00:03:03.29\00:03:06.20 performed. Then answered Esther and said, My petition and my 00:03:06.23\00:03:12.28 request is; If I have found favor in the sight of the king, 00:03:12.31\00:03:16.64 and if it please the king to grant my petition and to perform 00:03:16.67\00:03:19.77 my request, let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I 00:03:19.80\00:03:24.16 shall prepare for them, and I will do tomorrow as the king 00:03:24.19\00:03:27.46 hath said. Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with 00:03:27.49\00:03:32.78 a glad heart: but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, 00:03:32.81\00:03:37.12 that he stood not up, nor moved for him, he was full 00:03:37.15\00:03:41.40 of indignation against Mordecai. Nevertheless Haman refrained 00:03:41.43\00:03:45.64 himself and when he came home, he sent and called for his 00:03:45.67\00:03:48.94 friends, and Zeresh his wife. And Haman told them of the glory 00:03:48.97\00:03:53.82 of his riches and the multitude of his children, and all the 00:03:53.85\00:03:56.51 things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had 00:03:56.54\00:03:59.35 advanced him above the princes and servants of the king. 00:03:59.38\00:04:02.03 Haman said moreover, Yea Esther the queen did let no man come in 00:04:02.06\00:04:07.20 with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself 00:04:07.23\00:04:10.22 and tomorrow am I invited unto her also with the king. 00:04:10.25\00:04:13.86 Yet all this availeth me nothing so long as I see Mordecai 00:04:13.89\00:04:18.46 the Jew sitting at the king's gate. Then said Zeresh his wife 00:04:18.49\00:04:23.79 and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made of 00:04:23.82\00:04:27.99 fifty cubits high, and tomorrow speak thou unto the king 00:04:28.02\00:04:32.14 that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go thou in merrily 00:04:32.17\00:04:37.04 with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; 00:04:37.07\00:04:40.68 and he caused the gallows to be made. 00:04:40.71\00:04:43.29 Continuing in Esther, chapter 6, and this is the 00:04:43.32\00:04:46.41 King James Version. On that night could not the king 00:04:46.44\00:04:51.60 sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the 00:04:51.63\00:04:55.23 chronicles; and they were read before the king. 00:04:55.26\00:04:57.63 And it was found written, that Mordecai had told of Bigthana 00:04:57.66\00:05:02.76 and Teresh, two of the king's chamberlains, the keepers of the 00:05:02.79\00:05:05.22 door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus. 00:05:05.25\00:05:08.33 And the king said, What honor and dignity hath been done 00:05:08.36\00:05:13.21 to Mordecai for this? Then said the kings servants that 00:05:13.24\00:05:17.41 ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him. 00:05:17.44\00:05:20.63 And the king said, Who is in the court? Now Haman was come 00:05:20.66\00:05:26.03 into the outward court of the king's house to speak unto the 00:05:26.06\00:05:28.92 king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared 00:05:28.95\00:05:31.75 for him. And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, Haman 00:05:31.78\00:05:35.80 standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in. 00:05:35.83\00:05:38.97 So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be 00:05:39.00\00:05:43.61 done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honor? 00:05:43.64\00:05:46.33 Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight 00:05:46.36\00:05:51.73 to do honor more than to myself? And Haman answered the king, 00:05:51.76\00:05:56.22 For the man whom the king delighteth to honor, 00:05:56.25\00:05:59.68 Let the royal apparel be brought which the king useth to wear, 00:05:59.71\00:06:03.81 and the horse that the king rideth upon, and the crown royal 00:06:03.84\00:06:08.25 which is set upon his head: And let this apparel and horse be 00:06:08.28\00:06:12.47 delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, 00:06:12.50\00:06:15.50 that they may array the man withal whom the king delighteth 00:06:15.53\00:06:20.07 to honor, and bring him on horseback through the street 00:06:20.10\00:06:24.19 of the city, and proclaim before him, Thus shall it be done 00:06:24.22\00:06:28.48 to the man whom the king delighteth to honor. 00:06:28.51\00:06:31.17 Then the king said to Haman, Make haste, and take the apparel 00:06:31.20\00:06:37.12 and the horse, as thou hast said, and do even so to Mordecai 00:06:37.15\00:06:43.60 the Jew, that sitteth at the king's gate: let nothing fail 00:06:43.63\00:06:47.84 of all that thou hast spoken. Then took Haman the apparel 00:06:47.87\00:06:53.36 and the horse, and arrayed Mordecai, and brought him on 00:06:53.39\00:06:57.52 horseback through the street of the city, and proclaimed before 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.98 him, Thus shall it be done unto the man whom the king delighteth 00:07:01.01\00:07:05.39 to honor. And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. 00:07:05.42\00:07:09.81 But Haman hasted to his house mourning, and having his head 00:07:09.84\00:07:14.21 covered. And Haman told Zeresh his wife and all his friends 00:07:14.24\00:07:18.17 everything that had befallen him. Then said his wise men 00:07:18.20\00:07:22.75 and Zeresh his wife unto him, If Mordecai be of the seed of 00:07:22.78\00:07:27.37 the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not 00:07:27.40\00:07:32.39 prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him. 00:07:32.42\00:07:36.57 And while they were yet talking with him, came the king's 00:07:37.49\00:07:40.44 chamberlains, and hasted to bring Haman unto the banquet 00:07:40.93\00:07:44.26 that Esther had prepared. Continuing to read the story of 00:07:44.29\00:07:47.21 of Esther, chapter 7. This is the King James Version. 00:07:47.24\00:07:50.13 So the king and Haman came 00:07:50.16\00:07:53.00 to the banquet with Esther the queen. And the king said again 00:07:53.04\00:07:57.07 unto Esther on the second day at the banquet of wine, 00:07:57.10\00:07:59.81 What is thy petition, queen Esther? and it shall be granted 00:07:59.84\00:08:03.91 thee: and what is thy request? it shall be performed 00:08:03.94\00:08:07.85 even to the half of the kingdom. Then Esther the queen answered 00:08:07.88\00:08:12.28 and said, If I have found favor in thy sight, O king, 00:08:12.31\00:08:15.70 and if it please the king, let my life be given me 00:08:15.73\00:08:20.49 at my petition, and my people at my request: For we are sold, 00:08:20.52\00:08:24.77 I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, 00:08:24.80\00:08:28.95 and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and 00:08:28.98\00:08:32.28 bondwomen, I had held my tongue, although the enemy could not 00:08:32.31\00:08:35.31 countervail the king's damage. Then the king Ahasuerus answered 00:08:35.34\00:08:40.28 and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, 00:08:40.31\00:08:44.00 that durst presume in his heart to do so? 00:08:44.03\00:08:47.13 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. 00:08:47.16\00:08:54.81 Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen. And the king 00:08:54.84\00:09:00.00 arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath went into the 00:09:00.03\00:09:04.15 palace garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life 00:09:04.18\00:09:07.92 to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined 00:09:07.95\00:09:11.26 against him by the king. Then the king returned out of the 00:09:11.29\00:09:14.95 palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; 00:09:14.98\00:09:17.70 and Haman had fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was. 00:09:17.73\00:09:20.82 Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me 00:09:20.85\00:09:25.34 in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, 00:09:25.37\00:09:29.71 they covered Haman's face. And Harbonah, 00:09:29.74\00:09:32.71 one of the chamberlains, said before the king, Behold also, 00:09:32.74\00:09:36.32 the gallows fifty cubits high, which Haman had made 00:09:36.35\00:09:39.48 for Mordecai, who had spoken good for the king, 00:09:39.51\00:09:41.74 standeth in the house of Haman. Then the king said, Hang him 00:09:41.77\00:09:46.88 thereon. So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had 00:09:46.91\00:09:51.23 prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified. 00:09:51.26\00:09:55.26 Continuing with Esther, chapter 8. 00:09:55.29\00:09:58.53 On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of 00:09:58.56\00:10:02.54 Haman the Jew's enemy unto Esther the queen. 00:10:02.57\00:10:05.48 And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told 00:10:05.51\00:10:08.63 what he was unto her. And the king took off his ring, 00:10:08.66\00:10:12.52 which he had taken from Haman, and gave it unto Mordecai. 00:10:12.55\00:10:16.20 And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman. And Esther spake 00:10:16.23\00:10:20.75 yet again before the king, and fell down at his feet, 00:10:20.78\00:10:23.11 and besought him with tears to put away the mischief of Haman 00:10:23.14\00:10:26.83 the Agagite, and his device that he had devised against the Jews. 00:10:26.86\00:10:30.14 Then the king held out the golden sceptre toward Esther. 00:10:30.17\00:10:33.80 So Esther arose, and stood before the king, and said, 00:10:33.83\00:10:37.02 If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, 00:10:37.05\00:10:40.91 and the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing 00:10:40.94\00:10:44.18 in his eyes, let it be written to reverse the letters devised 00:10:44.21\00:10:48.06 by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to 00:10:48.09\00:10:51.29 destroy the Jews which are in all the king's provinces: 00:10:51.32\00:10:54.07 or how can I endure to see the evil that shall come unto my 00:10:54.10\00:10:57.75 people? or how can I endure to see the destruction 00:10:57.78\00:11:00.21 of my kindred? Then the king Ahasuerus said unto Esther 00:11:00.24\00:11:04.04 the queen and to Mordecai the Jew, Behold, I have given Esther 00:11:04.07\00:11:08.42 the house of Haman, and him they have hanged upon the gallows, 00:11:08.45\00:11:11.55 because he laid his hand upon the Jews. Write ye also for the 00:11:11.58\00:11:15.50 Jews, as it liketh you, in the king's name, and seal it 00:11:15.53\00:11:18.91 with the king's ring: for the writing which is written in the 00:11:18.94\00:11:21.70 king's name, and sealed with the kings ring, may no man reverse. 00:11:21.73\00:11:25.26 Then were the king's scribes called at that time in the 3rd 00:11:25.29\00:11:29.83 month, that is, the month Sivan, on the three and twentieth 00:11:29.86\00:11:33.09 day thereof; and it was written according to all that Mordecai 00:11:33.12\00:11:36.53 commanded unto the Jews, and to the lieutenants and the deputies 00:11:36.56\00:11:40.52 and rulers of the provinces which are from India unto 00:11:40.55\00:11:43.23 Ethiopia, an hundred twenty and seven provinces, 00:11:43.26\00:11:46.28 unto every province according to the writing thereof, and unto 00:11:46.31\00:11:49.58 every people after their language, and to the Jews 00:11:49.61\00:11:51.63 according to their writing, and according to their 00:11:51.66\00:11:53.35 language. And he wrote in the king Ahasuerus' name, 00:11:53.38\00:11:57.87 and sealed it with the king's ring, and sent letters by posts 00:11:57.90\00:12:01.75 on horseback, and riders on mules, camels, and young 00:12:01.78\00:12:05.08 dromedaries: Wherein the king granted the Jews which are in 00:12:05.11\00:12:09.68 every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their 00:12:09.71\00:12:14.22 life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish all the power 00:12:14.25\00:12:18.37 of the people and province that would assault them, 00:12:18.40\00:12:21.56 both little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them 00:12:21.59\00:12:24.79 for a prey, upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, 00:12:24.82\00:12:29.10 namely, upon the 13th day of the 12th month, which is the month 00:12:29.13\00:12:33.00 Adar. The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given 00:12:33.03\00:12:36.81 in every province was published unto all the people, and that 00:12:36.84\00:12:40.45 the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves 00:12:40.48\00:12:43.73 on their enemies. So the posts that rode upon the mules and 00:12:43.76\00:12:48.30 camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's 00:12:48.33\00:12:52.27 commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace. 00:12:52.30\00:12:56.23 And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal 00:12:56.26\00:13:00.33 apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, 00:13:00.36\00:13:03.26 and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of 00:13:03.29\00:13:06.67 Shushan rejoiced and was glad. The Jews had light and gladness 00:13:06.70\00:13:12.76 and joy, and honor.
