Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.49\00:00:17.81 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today 00:00:17.85\00:00:20.87 to read the word of God. Let's pray together before we start. 00:00:20.90\00:00:24.07 Our dear heavenly Father, thank you that we can come again and 00:00:24.10\00:00:28.95 sit quietly and hear the word that you have brought to us 00:00:28.98\00:00:33.74 down through the centuries, that will give meaning and strength 00:00:33.77\00:00:38.72 and faith, and wisdom, and council to each of us 00:00:38.75\00:00:42.36 in whatever we're facing. Please send your Holy Spirit 00:00:42.39\00:00:45.26 to open our hearts today and learn the lesson that you have 00:00:45.29\00:00:47.79 here for us. Thank you so much for loving us and for hearing 00:00:47.82\00:00:51.41 our prayer. We ask in your son's name. Amen. 00:00:51.44\00:00:54.16 We're reading in the book of Nehemiah, chapter 5, 00:00:54.19\00:00:58.16 and we're picking up as he's giving an account of some people 00:00:58.19\00:01:02.16 who have come to register a complaint with him, against 00:01:02.19\00:01:05.56 their brethren, the Jews. Starting in verse 4, 00:01:05.59\00:01:08.34 this is the King James Version. There were also that said, we 00:01:08.37\00:01:12.89 have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon 00:01:12.92\00:01:16.41 our lands and vineyards. Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our 00:01:16.44\00:01:20.40 brethren, our children as their brethren: and, lo, we bring 00:01:20.43\00:01:23.69 into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, 00:01:23.72\00:01:26.74 and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: 00:01:26.77\00:01:30.00 neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men 00:01:30.03\00:01:34.13 have our lands and vineyards. And I was very angry when I 00:01:34.16\00:01:38.23 heard their cry and these words. Then I consulted with myself, 00:01:38.26\00:01:42.70 and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, 00:01:42.73\00:01:46.63 Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great 00:01:46.66\00:01:52.41 assembly against them. And I said unto them, We after our 00:01:52.44\00:01:57.21 ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were 00:01:57.24\00:02:00.80 sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? 00:02:00.83\00:02:05.26 or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, 00:02:05.29\00:02:10.53 and found nothing to answer. Also I said, It is not good 00:02:10.56\00:02:16.27 that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because 00:02:16.30\00:02:21.02 of the reproach of the heathen our enemies? I likewise, and my 00:02:21.05\00:02:26.08 brethren and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: 00:02:26.11\00:02:29.80 I pray you, let us leave off this usury. Restore, I pray you, 00:02:29.83\00:02:35.82 to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, 00:02:35.85\00:02:39.49 their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part 00:02:39.52\00:02:43.15 of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye 00:02:43.18\00:02:46.25 exact of them. Then said they, We will restore them, and will 00:02:46.28\00:02:51.60 require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. 00:02:51.63\00:02:55.02 Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, 00:02:55.05\00:02:58.37 that they should do according to this promise. Also I shook 00:02:58.40\00:03:01.72 my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, 00:03:01.75\00:03:05.16 and from his labor, that performeth not this promise, 00:03:05.19\00:03:08.31 even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. 00:03:08.34\00:03:11.76 And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. 00:03:11.79\00:03:16.74 And the people did according to this promise. Moreover from the 00:03:16.77\00:03:21.75 time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of 00:03:21.78\00:03:24.80 Judah, from the 20th year even unto the two and thirtieth year 00:03:24.83\00:03:29.40 of Artaxerxes the king, that is twelve years, I and my brethren 00:03:29.43\00:03:33.98 have not eaten the bread of the governor. 00:03:34.01\00:03:36.13 But the former governors that had been before me 00:03:36.17\00:03:40.18 were chargeable unto the people and had taken of them bread and 00:03:40.21\00:03:43.72 wine, beside 40 shekels of silver; yea, even their servants 00:03:43.75\00:03:48.92 bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the 00:03:48.95\00:03:53.96 fear of God. Yea, also I continued in the work 00:03:53.99\00:03:58.73 of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants 00:03:58.76\00:04:03.92 were gathered thither unto the work. Moreover there were at my 00:04:03.95\00:04:08.59 table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, 00:04:08.62\00:04:11.45 beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are 00:04:11.48\00:04:15.21 about us. Now that which was prepared for me daily 00:04:15.24\00:04:19.49 was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, 00:04:19.52\00:04:25.28 and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: 00:04:25.31\00:04:29.34 Yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, 00:04:29.38\00:04:33.68 because the bondage was heavy upon this people. 00:04:33.71\00:04:36.87 Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have 00:04:36.90\00:04:42.89 done for this people. - We're continuing Nehemiah's story 00:04:42.92\00:04:47.24 in chapter 6, and this is the King James Version. 00:04:47.27\00:04:50.34 Now it came to pass, when Sanballat, and Tobiah and Geshem 00:04:50.37\00:04:55.71 the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had 00:04:55.74\00:04:59.37 builded the wall, and that there was no breach left therein; 00:04:59.40\00:05:03.52 though at that time I had not set up the doors 00:05:03.55\00:05:06.55 upon the gates; that Sanballat and Geshem sent unto me, saying, 00:05:06.58\00:05:10.68 Come, let us meet together in some one of the villages 00:05:10.71\00:05:15.12 in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief. 00:05:15.15\00:05:19.07 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, 00:05:19.10\00:05:24.45 so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I 00:05:24.48\00:05:28.97 leave it and come down to you? Yet they sent unto me 4 times 00:05:29.00\00:05:33.40 after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner. 00:05:33.43\00:05:36.71 Then sent Sanballat his servant unto me in like manner the 5th 00:05:36.74\00:05:41.67 time with an open letter in his hand; wherein was written, 00:05:41.70\00:05:45.65 It is reported among the heathen and Gashmu saith it, that thou 00:05:45.68\00:05:51.70 and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou buildest the 00:05:51.73\00:05:55.93 wall, that thou mayest be their king, according to these words. 00:05:55.96\00:05:59.34 And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at 00:05:59.37\00:06:03.36 Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall 00:06:03.39\00:06:07.53 it be reported to the king according to these words. 00:06:07.56\00:06:10.47 Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together. 00:06:10.50\00:06:14.49 Then I sent unto him, saying, There are no such things done 00:06:14.52\00:06:20.51 as thou sayest, but thou feignest them out of thine own 00:06:20.54\00:06:24.31 heart. For they all made us afraid, saying, Their hands 00:06:24.34\00:06:27.67 shall be weakened from the work, that it be not done. 00:06:27.70\00:06:30.18 Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. Afterward I came unto 00:06:30.21\00:06:37.00 the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabeel, 00:06:37.03\00:06:42.22 who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the 00:06:42.25\00:06:46.56 house of God, within the temple and let us shut the doors of the 00:06:46.59\00:06:50.41 temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night 00:06:50.44\00:06:53.70 will they come to slay thee. And I said, Should such a man as I 00:06:53.73\00:06:59.42 flee? and who is there, that, being as I am, would go into the 00:06:59.45\00:07:04.13 temple to save his life? I will not go in. And, lo, I perceived 00:07:04.16\00:07:09.96 that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy 00:07:09.99\00:07:14.14 against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. 00:07:14.17\00:07:18.26 Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, 00:07:18.29\00:07:23.13 and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, 00:07:23.16\00:07:27.67 that they might reproach me. My God, think thou upon Tobiah and 00:07:27.70\00:07:33.42 Sanballat according to these their works, 00:07:33.45\00:07:35.45 and on the prophetess Noadiah, and the rest of the prophets, 00:07:35.48\00:07:39.51 that would have put me in fear. So the wall was finished 00:07:39.54\00:07:44.54 in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in 52 days. 00:07:44.57\00:07:48.54 And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, 00:07:48.57\00:07:52.32 and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, 00:07:52.35\00:07:55.76 they were much cast down in their own eyes: 00:07:55.79\00:07:59.30 for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. 00:07:59.33\00:08:04.71 Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many 00:08:04.74\00:08:09.00 letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto 00:08:09.03\00:08:11.75 them. For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because 00:08:11.78\00:08:14.83 he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; 00:08:14.86\00:08:18.14 and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam 00:08:18.17\00:08:22.29 the son of Berechiah. Also they reported his good deeds before 00:08:22.32\00:08:27.47 me and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put 00:08:27.50\00:08:32.23 me in fear. - Continuing with Nehemiah's story in chapter 7. 00:08:32.26\00:08:37.18 And this is the King James Version. 00:08:37.21\00:08:38.92 Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up 00:08:38.95\00:08:44.48 the doors, and the porters and the singers and the Levites were 00:08:44.51\00:08:47.48 appointed, that I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah 00:08:47.51\00:08:52.26 the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a 00:08:52.29\00:08:55.94 faithful man, and feared God above many. 00:08:55.97\00:08:58.45 And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened 00:08:58.48\00:09:02.90 until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the 00:09:02.93\00:09:07.22 doors, and bar them: and appoint watches 00:09:07.25\00:09:09.64 of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, 00:09:09.67\00:09:12.99 and every one to be over against his house. 00:09:13.02\00:09:15.93 Now the city was large and great but the people were few therein, 00:09:15.96\00:09:20.95 and the houses were not builded. And my God put into mine heart 00:09:20.98\00:09:25.90 to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, 00:09:25.93\00:09:29.61 that they might be reckoned by genealogy. 00:09:29.64\00:09:33.03 And I found a register of the genealogy of them which came up 00:09:33.06\00:09:37.43 at the first, and found written therein, These are the children 00:09:37.46\00:09:41.90 of the province, that went up out of the captivity, 00:09:41.93\00:09:44.88 and of those that had been carried away whom Nebuchadnezzar 00:09:44.91\00:09:48.46 the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to 00:09:48.49\00:09:52.18 Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city; 00:09:52.21\00:09:57.31 And again as we do with the genealogies, we'll skip over 00:09:57.34\00:10:01.17 those listing of names - that listing of names to verse 64. 00:10:01.20\00:10:05.61 Nehemiah, chapter 7, picking up in verse 64. 00:10:05.64\00:10:09.43 These sought their register among those that were reckoned 00:10:09.46\00:10:14.08 by genealogy, but it was not found: therefore were they, 00:10:14.11\00:10:18.07 as polluted, put from the priesthood. 00:10:18.10\00:10:20.05 And the Tirshatha said unto them, that they should not eat 00:10:20.08\00:10:24.50 of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with 00:10:24.53\00:10:26.79 Urim and Thummim. The whole congregation together was 00:10:26.82\00:10:30.07 forty and two thousand three hundred and threescore, 00:10:30.10\00:10:32.49 Beside their manservants and their maidservants, 00:10:32.52\00:10:35.24 of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty 00:10:35.27\00:10:38.24 and seven: and they had two hundred forty and five singing 00:10:38.27\00:10:41.77 men and singing women. Their horses, seven hundred thirty 00:10:41.80\00:10:45.47 and six: their mules two hundred forty and five: 00:10:45.50\00:10:48.92 Their camels, four hundred thirty and five: 00:10:48.95\00:10:51.87 six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses. 00:10:51.90\00:10:54.68 And some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work. 00:10:54.71\00:10:58.99 The Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams 00:10:59.02\00:11:02.36 of gold, fifty basins, five hundred and thirty priests' 00:11:02.39\00:11:05.26 garments. And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the 00:11:05.29\00:11:10.39 treasure of the work 20,000 drams of gold, 00:11:10.42\00:11:13.84 and 2,200 pounds of silver. And that which the rest of the 00:11:13.87\00:11:18.62 People gave was 20,000 drams of gold, and 2,000 pound of silver, 00:11:18.65\00:11:22.62 and threescore and seven priest's garments. 00:11:22.65\00:11:25.57 So the priests and the Levites and the porters, and the singers 00:11:25.60\00:11:29.87 and some of the people, and the Nethinims, and all Israel, dwelt 00:11:29.90\00:11:34.23 in their cities; and when the 7th month came, the children 00:11:34.26\00:11:38.08 of Israel were in their cities. We're continuing with Nehemiah, 00:11:38.11\00:11:42.28 chapter 8. This is the King James Version. 00:11:42.31\00:11:44.92 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man 00:11:44.95\00:11:50.32 into the street that was before the water gate; 00:11:50.35\00:11:53.41 and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the 00:11:53.44\00:11:57.74 law of Moses which the Lord had commanded to Israel. 00:11:57.77\00:12:01.34 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation 00:12:01.37\00:12:05.89 both of men and women, and all that could hear with 00:12:05.92\00:12:10.13 understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. 00:12:10.16\00:12:12.49 And he read therein before the street that was before the water 00:12:12.52\00:12:16.26 gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the 00:12:16.29\00:12:20.73 women, and those that could understand; 00:12:20.76\00:12:22.99 and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of 00:12:23.02\00:12:27.64 the law. And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, 00:12:27.67\00:12:32.43 which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood 00:12:32.46\00:12:36.88 Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, 00:12:36.91\00:12:42.13 and Maaseiah, on his right hand and on his left hand, Pedaiah, 00:12:42.16\00:12:46.75 and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, 00:12:46.78\00:12:52.34 Zechariah, and Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book 00:12:52.37\00:12:57.21 in the sight of all the people; for he was above all the people; 00:12:57.24\00:13:00.71 and when he opened it, all the people stood up: 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.50 And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God. And all the people 00:13:03.53\00:13:08.65 answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: 00:13:08.68\00:13:12.20 and they bowed their heads and worshipped the Lord with their 00:13:12.23\00:13:16.67 faces to the ground. Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, 00:13:16.70\00:13:22.39 Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiajah, Maaseiah, Kelita, 00:13:22.42\00:13:28.65 Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan... Pelaiah, and the Levites, 00:13:28.68\00:13:33.29 caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood 00:13:33.32\00:13:38.27 in their place. So they read in the book in the law of God 00:13:38.30\00:13:43.06 distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand 00:13:43.09\00:13:48.74 the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the 00:13:48.77\00:13:54.08 priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, 00:13:54.11\00:13:56.71 said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord 00:13:56.74\00:14:02.10 your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, 00:14:02.13\00:14:06.59 when they heard the words of the law. 00:14:06.62\00:14:08.10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink 00:14:08.13\00:14:12.42 the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing 00:14:12.45\00:14:14.97 is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: 00:14:15.00\00:14:18.78 neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength. 00:14:18.81\00:14:23.49 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace 00:14:23.52\00:14:28.66 for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved. 00:14:28.69\00:14:32.25 Thank you for joining with me today. Until we come together 00:14:32.28\00:14:35.69 again, may the joy of the Lord be our strength, too. Goodbye. 00:14:35.72\00:14:39.01
