Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.89\00:00:18.43 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to be reading 00:00:18.46\00:00:21.62 in the book of Ezra. But before we start, let's pray together. 00:00:21.65\00:00:24.55 Dear God, we thank you for an opportunity to come now apart 00:00:24.58\00:00:31.91 from the business of life. We ask you to be with us in a 00:00:31.94\00:00:35.65 special way as we read your words. And we ask that your 00:00:35.68\00:00:40.52 still small voice will speak to our hearts and teach us the 00:00:40.55\00:00:44.62 truth that has come down through the ages to be relevant to our 00:00:44.65\00:00:48.45 lives today. Thank you for loving us and we love you so 00:00:48.48\00:00:52.81 much. Amen. We're reading in the book of Ezra his account of the 00:00:52.84\00:00:58.57 rebuilding of Jerusalem. Starting in chapter 8, verse 32, 00:00:58.60\00:01:02.69 this is the King James Version. And we came to Jerusalem and 00:01:02.72\00:01:06.96 abode there three days. Now on the 4th day was the silver and 00:01:06.99\00:01:12.22 the gold and the vessels weighed in the house of our God by the 00:01:12.25\00:01:15.99 hand of Meremoth the son of Uriah the priest; and with him 00:01:16.02\00:01:20.08 was Eleazar the son of Phinehas; and with them was Jozabad 00:01:20.11\00:01:24.41 the son of Jeshua, and Noadiah the son of Binnui, Levites; 00:01:24.44\00:01:29.20 By number and by weight of every one: and all the weight was 00:01:29.23\00:01:33.35 written at that time. Also the children of those that had been 00:01:33.38\00:01:37.65 carried away, which were come out of the captivity, 00:01:37.68\00:01:40.75 offered burnt offerings unto the God of Israel, 12 bullocks 00:01:40.78\00:01:44.68 for all Israel, ninety and six rams, seventy and seven lambs, 00:01:44.71\00:01:49.82 12 he goats for a sin offering: all this was a burnt offering 00:01:49.85\00:01:55.18 unto the Lord. And they delivered the king's commissions 00:01:55.21\00:01:59.15 unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors on this 00:01:59.18\00:02:02.88 side the river: and they furthered the people, 00:02:02.91\00:02:05.63 and the house of God. Continuing with Ezra's account 00:02:05.66\00:02:10.66 of the rebuilding of the temple, in the book of Ezra, chapter 9, 00:02:10.69\00:02:14.08 and this is the King James Version. 00:02:14.11\00:02:16.16 Now when these things were done, the princes came to me, saying, 00:02:16.19\00:02:21.76 The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, 00:02:21.79\00:02:25.32 have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, 00:02:25.35\00:02:29.25 doing according to their abominations, 00:02:29.28\00:02:32.06 even of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, 00:02:32.09\00:02:35.40 the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, 00:02:35.43\00:02:39.24 and the Amorites. For they have taken of their daughters 00:02:39.27\00:02:43.61 for themselves, and for their sons: so that the holy seed 00:02:43.64\00:02:47.80 have mingled themselves with the people of those lands: 00:02:47.83\00:02:50.26 yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief 00:02:50.29\00:02:55.16 in this trespass. And when I heard this thing, 00:02:55.19\00:02:59.33 I rent my garment and my mantle, and plucked off the hair 00:02:59.36\00:03:04.36 of my head and of my beard, and sat down astonied. 00:03:04.39\00:03:09.12 Then were assembled unto me every one that trembled 00:03:09.15\00:03:13.43 at the words of the God of Israel, because of the 00:03:13.46\00:03:16.06 transgression of those that had been carried away; 00:03:16.09\00:03:18.17 and I sat astonied until the evening sacrifice. 00:03:18.20\00:03:22.07 And at the evening sacrifice I arose up from my heaviness; 00:03:22.10\00:03:27.29 and having rent my garment and my mantle, I fell upon my knees, 00:03:27.32\00:03:32.54 and spread out my hands unto the Lord my God, and said, O my God, 00:03:32.57\00:03:39.74 I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God, 00:03:39.77\00:03:44.87 for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass 00:03:44.90\00:03:49.35 is grown up unto the heavens. Since the days of our fathers 00:03:49.38\00:03:54.46 have we been in a great trespass unto this day: 00:03:54.49\00:03:58.35 and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, 00:03:58.38\00:04:02.50 been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, 00:04:02.53\00:04:04.92 to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion 00:04:04.95\00:04:09.46 of face, as it is this day. And now for a little space 00:04:09.49\00:04:16.16 grace hath been shewed from the Lord our God, to leave us 00:04:16.19\00:04:20.03 a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place 00:04:20.06\00:04:24.05 that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little 00:04:24.08\00:04:26.63 reviving in our bondage. For we were bondmen; yet our God 00:04:26.66\00:04:31.63 hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy 00:04:31.66\00:04:35.79 unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a 00:04:35.82\00:04:39.34 reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the 00:04:39.37\00:04:43.08 desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah 00:04:43.11\00:04:45.78 and in Jerusalem. And now, O our God, what shall we say 00:04:45.81\00:04:52.13 after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments, 00:04:52.16\00:04:55.56 Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, 00:04:55.59\00:04:58.46 saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, 00:04:58.49\00:05:01.42 is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people 00:05:01.45\00:05:04.30 of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled 00:05:04.33\00:05:07.43 it from one end to another with their uncleanness. 00:05:07.46\00:05:09.25 Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, 00:05:09.28\00:05:12.36 neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek 00:05:12.39\00:05:16.61 their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, 00:05:16.64\00:05:20.57 and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance 00:05:20.60\00:05:23.68 to your children for ever. And after all that is come upon us 00:05:23.71\00:05:29.09 for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, 00:05:29.12\00:05:31.41 seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our 00:05:31.44\00:05:35.62 iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance 00:05:35.65\00:05:38.81 as this; should we again break thy commandments, and join in 00:05:38.84\00:05:42.70 affinity with the people of these abominations? 00:05:42.73\00:05:44.91 wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed 00:05:44.94\00:05:49.12 us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping? 00:05:49.15\00:05:52.16 O Lord God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet 00:05:52.19\00:05:57.79 escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee 00:05:57.82\00:06:03.27 in our trespasses: for we can not stand before thee 00:06:03.30\00:06:07.03 because of this. Continuing in the book of Ezra, 00:06:07.06\00:06:11.31 chapter 10, and this is the King James Version. 00:06:11.34\00:06:13.86 Now when Ezra had prayed, and when he had confessed, weeping 00:06:13.89\00:06:19.90 and casting himself down before the house of God, 00:06:19.93\00:06:23.50 there assembled unto him out of Israel a very great congregation 00:06:23.53\00:06:28.49 of men and women and children: for the people wept very sore. 00:06:28.52\00:06:32.26 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, 00:06:32.29\00:06:37.36 answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, 00:06:37.39\00:06:41.72 and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: 00:06:41.75\00:06:45.10 yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. 00:06:45.13\00:06:49.35 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put 00:06:49.38\00:06:54.67 away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to 00:06:54.70\00:06:58.49 the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble 00:06:58.52\00:07:01.67 at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to 00:07:01.70\00:07:04.66 the law. Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: 00:07:04.69\00:07:08.46 we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it. 00:07:08.49\00:07:13.28 Then arose Ezra, and made the chief priests, the Levites, 00:07:13.31\00:07:18.49 and all Israel, to swear that they should do according to this 00:07:18.52\00:07:23.08 word. And they sware. Then Ezra rose up from before the house 00:07:23.11\00:07:26.99 of God, and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of 00:07:27.02\00:07:30.68 Eliahaib: and when he came thither, he did eat no bread, 00:07:30.71\00:07:34.86 nor drink water: for he mourned because of the transgression 00:07:34.89\00:07:39.01 of them that had been carried away. And they made proclamation 00:07:39.04\00:07:43.59 throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the 00:07:43.62\00:07:47.68 captivity, that they should gather themselves together 00:07:47.71\00:07:50.72 unto Jerusalem; And that whosoever would not come 00:07:50.75\00:07:53.60 within three days, according to the counsel of the princes 00:07:53.63\00:07:56.44 and the elders, all his substance should be forfeited, 00:07:56.47\00:08:00.10 and himself separated from the congregation of those that had 00:08:00.13\00:08:04.79 been carried away. Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin 00:08:04.82\00:08:09.10 gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within 3 days. 00:08:09.13\00:08:12.86 It was the 9th month, on the 20th day of the month; 00:08:12.89\00:08:16.69 and all the people sat in the street of the house of God, 00:08:16.72\00:08:20.83 trembling because of this matter and for the great rain. 00:08:20.86\00:08:25.13 And Ezra the priest stood up, and said unto them, 00:08:25.16\00:08:29.05 Ye have transgressed, and have taken strange wives, 00:08:29.08\00:08:33.76 to increase the trespass of Israel. Now therefore make 00:08:33.79\00:08:38.34 confession unto the Lord God of your fathers, and do his 00:08:38.37\00:08:41.92 pleasure: and separate yourselves from the people 00:08:41.95\00:08:44.18 of the land, and from the strange wives. 00:08:44.21\00:08:46.82 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud 00:08:46.85\00:08:51.19 voice, As thou hast said, so must we do. 00:08:51.22\00:08:55.19 But the people are many, and it is a time of much rain, 00:08:55.22\00:08:59.03 and we are not able to stand without, neither is this a work 00:08:59.06\00:09:02.13 of one day or two: for we are many that have transgressed 00:09:02.16\00:09:05.24 in this thing. Let now our rulers of all the congregation 00:09:05.27\00:09:09.12 stand, and let all them which have taken strange wives 00:09:09.15\00:09:13.17 in our cities come at appointed times, and with them the elders 00:09:13.20\00:09:17.61 of every city, and the judges thereof, until the fierce wrath 00:09:17.64\00:09:21.96 of our God for this matter be turned from us. 00:09:21.99\00:09:25.49 Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah 00:09:25.52\00:09:32.34 were employed about this matter: and Meshullam and Shabbethai 00:09:32.37\00:09:37.62 the Levite helped them. And the children of the captivity did so 00:09:37.65\00:09:42.27 and Ezra the priest with certain chief of the fathers, 00:09:42.30\00:09:45.06 after the house of their fathers and all of them by their names, 00:09:45.09\00:09:49.11 were separated and sat down in the 1st day of the 10th month 00:09:49.14\00:09:53.76 to examine the matter. And they made an end with all the men 00:09:53.79\00:09:58.90 that had taken strange wives by the 1st day of the 1st month. 00:09:58.93\00:10:04.97 To finish out the book of Ezra, there is another long listing of 00:10:05.00\00:10:10.38 names as they separated themselves from the strange 00:10:10.41\00:10:13.91 wives. And so this will conclude our reading of the book of Ezra. 00:10:13.94\00:10:16.67 We'll turn over to the book of Nehemiah, chapter 1, 00:10:16.70\00:10:20.00 and this is the King James Version. 00:10:20.03\00:10:22.63 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. And it came to pass 00:10:22.66\00:10:29.46 in the month Chisleu, in the 20th year, as I was in Shushan 00:10:29.49\00:10:34.07 the palace, that Hanani, one of my brethren, came, 00:10:34.10\00:10:37.85 he and certain men of Judah; and I asked them concerning 00:10:37.88\00:10:42.36 the Jews that had escaped, which were left of the captivity, 00:10:42.39\00:10:45.54 and concerning Jerusalem. And they said unto me, 00:10:45.57\00:10:49.13 The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province 00:10:49.16\00:10:52.84 are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem 00:10:52.87\00:10:58.33 also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned 00:10:58.36\00:11:00.85 with fire. And it came to pass when I heard these words 00:11:00.88\00:11:05.49 that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, 00:11:05.52\00:11:08.89 and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, 00:11:08.92\00:11:13.14 And said, I beseech thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and 00:11:13.17\00:11:18.38 terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them 00:11:18.41\00:11:21.47 that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now 00:11:21.50\00:11:26.28 be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear 00:11:26.31\00:11:30.84 the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, 00:11:30.87\00:11:33.77 day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, 00:11:33.80\00:11:37.43 and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we 00:11:37.46\00:11:40.97 have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house 00:11:41.00\00:11:44.62 have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, 00:11:44.65\00:11:48.17 and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, 00:11:48.20\00:11:50.59 nor the judgments, which thou commandest thy servant Moses. 00:11:50.62\00:11:53.85 Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst 00:11:53.88\00:11:59.49 thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you 00:11:59.52\00:12:03.53 abroad among the nations: But if ye turn unto me, and keep my 00:12:03.56\00:12:09.36 commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast 00:12:09.39\00:12:13.33 out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather 00:12:13.36\00:12:17.67 them from thence, and will bring them unto the place 00:12:17.70\00:12:20.21 that I have chosen to set my name there. 00:12:20.24\00:12:22.86 Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast 00:12:22.89\00:12:27.51 redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand. 00:12:27.54\00:12:31.26 O Lord, I beseech thee, let now thine ear be attentive to the 00:12:31.29\00:12:36.32 prayer of thy servant, and to the prayer of thy servants, 00:12:36.35\00:12:39.49 who desire to fear thy name: and prosper, I pray thee, 00:12:39.52\00:12:43.81 thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this 00:12:43.84\00:12:48.24 man. For I was the king's cupbearer. 00:12:48.27\00:12:51.60 We're continuing with Nehemiah's account in chapter 2. 00:12:51.63\00:12:55.77 This is the King James Version. And it came to pass in the month 00:12:55.80\00:13:00.98 Nisan, in the 20th year of Artaxerxes the king, 00:13:01.01\00:13:03.76 that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it 00:13:03.79\00:13:07.51 unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in 00:13:07.54\00:13:11.86 his presence. Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy 00:13:11.89\00:13:16.20 countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else 00:13:16.23\00:13:21.31 but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, 00:13:21.34\00:13:25.73 and said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: 00:13:25.76\00:13:28.77 why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of 00:13:28.80\00:13:34.49 my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof 00:13:34.52\00:13:38.81 are consumed with fire? Then the king said unto me, For what dost 00:13:38.84\00:13:44.26 thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. 00:13:44.29\00:13:48.72 And I said unto the king, If it please the king, 00:13:48.75\00:13:52.83 and if thy servant have found favor in thy sight, 00:13:52.86\00:13:55.58 that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city 00:13:55.61\00:13:59.99 of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. 00:14:00.02\00:14:02.93 And the king said unto me, the queen also sitting by him. 00:14:02.96\00:14:07.88 For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? 00:14:07.91\00:14:12.58 So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. 00:14:12.61\00:14:17.04 Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, 00:14:17.07\00:14:21.39 let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, 00:14:21.42\00:14:24.66 that they may convey me over till I come into Judah; 00:14:24.69\00:14:28.98 Thank you for joining with me today to read the word of God, 00:14:29.01\00:14:33.40 and when we come together again next time, we'll continue 00:14:33.43\00:14:36.10 the story of Nehemiah. God bless. Goodbye. 00:14:36.13\00:14:38.93
