Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:17.01\00:00:18.90 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today 00:00:18.93\00:00:21.77 to read the bible together. Lets pray before we start. 00:00:21.80\00:00:24.46 Dear Lord, thank you so much for your word that is a light 00:00:24.49\00:00:30.45 to our path, that strengthens our faith, 00:00:30.48\00:00:33.41 and that is a weapon of warfare 00:00:33.44\00:00:36.85 against the enemy. Please guide us now as we read these words, 00:00:36.88\00:00:40.65 to hear the lesson you have for each of us. We love you and 00:00:40.68\00:00:44.25 thank you for loving us. Amen. When we were last together, 00:00:44.28\00:00:48.52 We were reading in the book of Ezra how Cyrus king of Persia 00:00:48.55\00:00:52.31 has decreed that some of those who had come into captivity 00:00:52.34\00:00:56.13 could now return to Jerusalem to rebuild the house of God. 00:00:56.16\00:00:59.54 And we are picking up in Ezra, chapter 2. We left off, 00:00:59.57\00:01:05.51 We would have begun with verse 2 but what happened from verse 2 00:01:05.54\00:01:10.09 up through verse 61 is a listing of genealogy. 00:01:10.12\00:01:13.70 And we're going to skip that and so pick up after this long 00:01:13.73\00:01:17.92 list of names, in Ezra 2 and verse 62. 00:01:17.95\00:01:22.26 This is the King James Version. These sought their register 00:01:22.29\00:01:27.31 among those that were reckoned by genealogy. But they were not 00:01:27.34\00:01:30.90 found. Therefore were they, as polluted put from the priesthood 00:01:30.93\00:01:34.71 And the Tirshatha said unto them that they should not eat 00:01:34.74\00:01:39.66 of the most holy things, till there stood up a priest with 00:01:39.69\00:01:42.16 Urim and Thummim. The whole congregation together was 42,360 00:01:42.19\00:01:49.02 beside their servants and their maids, of whom there were 7,337: 00:01:49.05\00:01:54.82 and there were among them 200 singing men and singing women. 00:01:54.85\00:01:59.47 Their horses were 736; their mules, 245; their camels 435, 00:01:59.50\00:02:08.60 their asses 6,720. And some of the chief of the fathers, 00:02:08.63\00:02:15.13 when they came to the house of the Lord which is at Jerusalem, 00:02:15.16\00:02:17.78 offered freely for the house of God to set it up in his place: 00:02:17.81\00:02:22.65 They gave after their ability unto the treasure of the work 00:02:22.68\00:02:27.18 threescore and one thousand drams of gold, 00:02:27.21\00:02:30.56 and five thousand pounds of silver, and one hundred 00:02:30.59\00:02:33.55 priests' garments. So the priests, and the Levites, 00:02:33.58\00:02:37.30 and some of the people, and the singers, and the porters, 00:02:37.33\00:02:39.92 and the Nethinims, dwelt in their cities, 00:02:39.95\00:02:42.91 and all Israel in their cities. 00:02:42.94\00:02:45.80 Continuing now with Ezra chapter 3. 00:02:45.83\00:02:49.72 This is the King James Version. And when the 7th month was come, 00:02:49.75\00:02:54.70 and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people 00:02:54.73\00:02:57.70 gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem. 00:02:57.73\00:03:00.96 Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren 00:03:00.99\00:03:06.62 the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, 00:03:06.65\00:03:10.77 and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, 00:03:10.80\00:03:14.13 to offer burnt offerings thereon as it is written in the law of 00:03:14.16\00:03:17.04 Moses the man of God. And they set the altar upon his bases; 00:03:17.07\00:03:21.10 for fear was upon them because of the people of those countries 00:03:21.13\00:03:24.38 and they offered burnt offerings theron unto the Lord, even burnt 00:03:24.41\00:03:29.09 offerings morning and evening. They kept also the feast of 00:03:29.12\00:03:33.38 tabernacles, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt 00:03:33.41\00:03:37.52 offering, by number, according to the custom, as the duty 00:03:37.55\00:03:41.00 of every day required; and afterward offered the continual 00:03:41.03\00:03:45.44 burnt offering, both of the new moons and of all the set feasts 00:03:45.47\00:03:48.95 of the Lord that were consecrated and of every one 00:03:48.98\00:03:52.57 that willingly offered a freewill offering unto the Lord. 00:03:52.60\00:03:56.10 >From the first day of the 7th month began they to offer burnt 00:03:56.13\00:04:01.10 offerings unto the Lord. But the foundation of the temple 00:04:01.13\00:04:04.65 of the Lord was not yet laid. They gave money also unto the 00:04:04.68\00:04:08.70 masons, and to the carpenters; and meat and drink, and oil, 00:04:08.73\00:04:13.32 unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees 00:04:13.35\00:04:17.66 from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa according to the grant that they 00:04:17.69\00:04:21.85 had of Cyrus king of Persia. Now in the 2nd year of their 00:04:21.88\00:04:26.44 coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the 2nd month, 00:04:26.47\00:04:30.02 began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of 00:04:30.05\00:04:34.86 Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests 00:04:34.89\00:04:38.37 and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the 00:04:38.40\00:04:41.80 captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, 00:04:41.83\00:04:45.42 from 20 years old and upward, to set forward the work of the 00:04:45.45\00:04:49.32 house of the Lord. Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his 00:04:49.35\00:04:53.86 brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, 00:04:53.89\00:04:57.76 to set forward the workmen in the house of God: 00:04:57.79\00:05:00.88 the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren 00:05:00.91\00:05:04.18 the Levites. And when the builders laid the foundation 00:05:04.21\00:05:07.54 of the temple of the Lord, they set the priests in their apparel 00:05:07.57\00:05:11.49 with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, 00:05:11.52\00:05:14.76 to praise the Lord, after the ordinance of David King of 00:05:14.79\00:05:18.88 Israel. And they sang together by course in praising and giving 00:05:18.91\00:05:24.18 thanks unto the Lord; because he is good, for his mercy 00:05:24.21\00:05:28.94 endureth forever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with 00:05:28.97\00:05:33.12 a great shout when they praised the Lord; because the foundation 00:05:33.15\00:05:36.82 of the house of the Lord was laid. But many of the priests 00:05:36.85\00:05:41.08 and Levites and the chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, 00:05:41.11\00:05:44.15 that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this 00:05:44.18\00:05:47.57 house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; 00:05:47.60\00:05:51.53 and many shouted aloud for Joy: So that the people could not 00:05:51.56\00:05:57.22 discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the 00:05:57.25\00:06:00.54 weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud 00:06:00.57\00:06:03.94 shout, and the noise was heard afar off. 00:06:03.97\00:06:07.63 Continuing now in the book of Ezra, chapter 4, and 00:06:07.66\00:06:11.73 this is the King James Version. Now when the adversaries of 00:06:11.76\00:06:16.75 Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity 00:06:16.78\00:06:19.98 builded the temple unto the Lord God of Israel; 00:06:20.01\00:06:22.76 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, 00:06:22.79\00:06:27.25 and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, 00:06:27.28\00:06:31.66 as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days 00:06:31.69\00:06:35.98 of Esarhaddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither. 00:06:36.01\00:06:40.19 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the 00:06:40.22\00:06:45.17 fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do 00:06:45.20\00:06:48.83 with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves 00:06:48.86\00:06:52.52 together will build unto the Lord God of Israel, 00:06:52.55\00:06:54.92 as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us. 00:06:54.95\00:06:58.97 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people 00:06:59.00\00:07:04.19 of Judah, and troubled them in building, and hired counselors 00:07:04.22\00:07:09.20 against them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of 00:07:09.23\00:07:12.97 Cyrus king of Persia even until the reign of Darius 00:07:13.00\00:07:16.74 king of Persia. And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning 00:07:16.77\00:07:21.35 of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the 00:07:21.38\00:07:25.31 inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. 00:07:25.34\00:07:26.97 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Tishlam, Mithredath, 00:07:27.00\00:07:32.12 Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.49 king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the 00:07:35.52\00:07:39.04 Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue. 00:07:39.07\00:07:42.59 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a 00:07:42.62\00:07:47.35 letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort 00:07:47.38\00:07:51.65 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, 00:07:51.68\00:07:56.05 and the rest of their companions the Dinaites, 00:07:56.08\00:07:59.03 the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, 00:07:59.06\00:08:04.32 the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, 00:08:04.35\00:08:10.82 and the Elamites, and the rest of the nations whom the great 00:08:10.85\00:08:15.24 and Noble Asnapper brought over and set in the cities of Samaria 00:08:15.27\00:08:18.56 and the rest that are on this side of the river, and at such a 00:08:18.60\00:08:21.89 time. This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, 00:08:21.92\00:08:25.98 even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this 00:08:26.01\00:08:31.90 side the river, and at such a time. Be it known unto the king, 00:08:31.93\00:08:36.69 that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto 00:08:36.72\00:08:41.65 Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, 00:08:41.68\00:08:45.42 and have set up the walls thereof, and joined 00:08:45.45\00:08:49.02 the foundations. Be it known now unto the king, that if this city 00:08:49.05\00:08:54.47 be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay 00:08:54.50\00:08:59.49 toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage 00:08:59.52\00:09:04.72 the revenue of the kings. Now because we have maintenance 00:09:04.75\00:09:09.24 from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see 00:09:09.27\00:09:13.37 the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and certified 00:09:13.40\00:09:17.94 the king; that search may be made in the book of the records 00:09:17.97\00:09:21.97 of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records 00:09:22.00\00:09:25.31 and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful 00:09:25.34\00:09:30.15 unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition 00:09:30.18\00:09:34.89 within the same of old time: for which cause was this city 00:09:34.92\00:09:39.72 destroyed. We certify the king that, if this city be builded 00:09:39.75\00:09:45.21 again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt 00:09:45.24\00:09:48.61 have no portion on this side the river. Then sent the king 00:09:48.64\00:09:54.93 an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai 00:09:54.96\00:09:58.87 the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell 00:09:58.90\00:10:01.19 in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace 00:10:01.22\00:10:06.62 and at such a time. The letter which ye sent unto us hath been 00:10:06.65\00:10:11.18 plainly read before me. And I commanded, and search hath been 00:10:11.21\00:10:15.92 made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made 00:10:15.95\00:10:19.53 insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have 00:10:19.56\00:10:24.59 been made therein. There have been mighty kings also over 00:10:24.62\00:10:28.61 Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; 00:10:28.64\00:10:32.00 and toll, tribute, and custom was paid unto them. 00:10:32.03\00:10:36.01 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, 00:10:36.04\00:10:40.86 and that this city be not builded, until another 00:10:40.89\00:10:45.33 commandment shall be given from me. Take heed now that ye 00:10:45.36\00:10:49.48 fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the 00:10:49.51\00:10:54.10 kings? Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read 00:10:54.13\00:10:59.78 before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions 00:10:59.81\00:11:03.06 they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, 00:11:03.09\00:11:06.72 and made them to cease by force and power. Then ceased the work 00:11:06.75\00:11:13.49 of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto 00:11:13.52\00:11:18.45 the 2nd year of the reign of Darius king of Persia. 00:11:18.48\00:11:22.14 Continuing now in the book of Ezra, chapter 5, 00:11:22.17\00:11:26.28 and this is the King James Version. 00:11:26.31\00:11:28.44 Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son 00:11:28.47\00:11:33.81 of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah 00:11:33.84\00:11:37.70 and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them. 00:11:37.73\00:11:40.48 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son 00:11:40.51\00:11:47.03 of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at 00:11:47.06\00:11:51.14 Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping 00:11:51.17\00:11:54.78 them. At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this 00:11:54.81\00:11:59.61 side the river and Shetharboznai and their companions, 00:11:59.64\00:12:04.25 and thus said unto them, Who hath commanded you to build 00:12:04.28\00:12:08.32 this house, and to make up this wall? Then said we unto them 00:12:08.35\00:12:13.57 after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this 00:12:13.60\00:12:17.78 building? But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the 00:12:17.81\00:12:21.52 Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter 00:12:21.55\00:12:25.37 came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter 00:12:25.40\00:12:29.82 concerning this matter. The copy of the letter that Tatnai, 00:12:29.85\00:12:34.17 governor on this side the river, and Shetharboznai, and his 00:12:34.20\00:12:37.93 companions the Apharsachites, which were on this side 00:12:37.96\00:12:41.56 the river, sent unto Darius the king: They sent a letter unto 00:12:41.59\00:12:45.48 him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace. 00:12:45.51\00:12:51.61 Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of 00:12:51.64\00:12:56.22 Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded 00:12:56.25\00:12:59.55 with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work 00:12:59.58\00:13:04.67 goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands. Then asked we 00:13:04.70\00:13:10.26 those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build 00:13:10.29\00:13:14.90 this house, and to make up these walls? We asked their 00:13:14.93\00:13:18.35 names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names 00:13:18.38\00:13:21.79 of the men that were the chief of them. And thus they returned 00:13:21.82\00:13:25.70 us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of Heaven 00:13:25.73\00:13:29.51 and earth, and build the house that was builded these many 00:13:29.54\00:13:33.30 years ago, which a great king of Israel builded and set up. 00:13:33.33\00:13:37.52 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto 00:13:37.55\00:13:41.51 wrath, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king 00:13:41.54\00:13:44.07 of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this house, 00:13:44.10\00:13:47.04 and carried the people away into Babylon. But in the 1st year of 00:13:47.07\00:13:50.93 Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree 00:13:50.96\00:13:55.06 to build his house of God. And the vessels also of gold and 00:13:55.09\00:13:58.97 silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took out 00:13:59.00\00:14:01.90 of the temple that was in Jerusalem, and brought them 00:14:01.93\00:14:04.06 into the temple of Babylon, those did Cyrus the king take 00:14:04.09\00:14:08.09 out of the temple of Babylon, and they were delivered unto one 00:14:08.12\00:14:11.09 whose name was Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor; 00:14:11.12\00:14:14.90 And said unto him, Take these vessels, go, carry them into the 00:14:14.93\00:14:19.82 temple that is in Jerusalem, and let the house of God be 00:14:19.85\00:14:24.25 builded in his place. Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and 00:14:24.28\00:14:28.64 laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem: 00:14:28.68\00:14:31.77 and since that time even until now hath it been in building, 00:14:31.80\00:14:36.42 and yet it is not finished. 00:14:36.45\00:14:40.07
