Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.10\00:00:16.92 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today, 00:00:16.95\00:00:19.94 to read in 1st Chronicles of the reign of king David. 00:00:19.97\00:00:23.61 Before we start, let's pray together. 00:00:23.64\00:00:25.56 Dear God, thank you again for your blessings and your guidance 00:00:25.59\00:00:30.81 and your love. Please be with us now as we read of David 00:00:30.84\00:00:35.54 a man after Your own heart, and may his story and his example 00:00:35.57\00:00:39.60 bear fruit in our lives, that we may also be more like you. 00:00:39.63\00:00:43.70 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:43.73\00:00:46.48 When we were last together, we were reading how 00:00:46.51\00:00:50.38 they had brought the ark of the covenant back and David was 00:00:50.41\00:00:53.98 singing a song to the Lord in celebration. 00:00:54.01\00:00:56.36 We're going to pick that up in chapter 16 beginning in verse 23 00:00:56.39\00:01:01.13 and this is the King James version. 00:01:01.16\00:01:02.50 Sing unto the Lord all the earth shew forth from day to day 00:01:02.53\00:01:07.72 his salvation. Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvelous 00:01:07.75\00:01:12.65 works among all nations. For great is the Lord, 00:01:12.68\00:01:16.31 and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all 00:01:16.34\00:01:20.70 gods. For all the gods of the people are idols: but the Lord 00:01:20.73\00:01:24.50 made the heavens. Glory and honor are in his presence; 00:01:24.53\00:01:28.52 strength and gladness are in his place. Give unto the Lord, 00:01:28.55\00:01:33.85 ye kindreds of the people, give unto the Lord glory and strength 00:01:33.88\00:01:38.40 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: 00:01:38.43\00:01:42.24 bring an offering, and come before him, worship the Lord 00:01:42.27\00:01:47.16 in the beauty of holiness. Fear before him all the earth: 00:01:47.19\00:01:51.62 the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved. 00:01:51.65\00:01:55.77 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: 00:01:55.80\00:01:59.33 and let men say among the nations, The Lord reigneth. 00:01:59.36\00:02:02.34 Let the sea roar, and the fullness thereof: 00:02:02.37\00:02:05.11 let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein. 00:02:05.14\00:02:08.44 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence 00:02:08.47\00:02:12.16 of the Lord, because he cometh to judge the earth. 00:02:12.19\00:02:14.79 O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good; 00:02:14.82\00:02:18.98 for his mercy endureth for ever. And say ye, Save us, O God 00:02:19.01\00:02:24.57 of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us 00:02:24.60\00:02:28.23 from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, 00:02:28.26\00:02:31.58 and glory in thy praise. Blessed be the Lord God 00:02:31.61\00:02:36.68 Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, 00:02:36.71\00:02:41.58 and praised the Lord. So he left there before the ark 00:02:41.61\00:02:46.11 of the covenant of the Lord Asaph and his brethren, 00:02:46.14\00:02:49.43 to minister before the ark continually, as every day's 00:02:49.46\00:02:53.69 work required: And Obed-edom with their brethren, threescore 00:02:53.72\00:02:58.50 and eight; Obed-edom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah 00:02:58.53\00:03:03.04 to be porters: And Zadok the priest, and his brethren 00:03:03.07\00:03:06.81 the priests, before the tabernacle of the Lord 00:03:06.84\00:03:09.13 in the high place that was at Gibeon, to offer burnt offerings 00:03:09.16\00:03:13.04 unto the Lord upon the altar of the burnt offering continually 00:03:13.07\00:03:16.71 morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written 00:03:16.74\00:03:20.97 in the law of the Lord, which he commanded Israel; 00:03:21.00\00:03:23.47 And with them Heman and Jeduthun and the rest that were chosen, 00:03:23.50\00:03:27.72 who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the Lord, 00:03:27.75\00:03:31.12 because his mercy endureth for ever; and with them Heman and 00:03:31.15\00:03:36.48 Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should 00:03:36.51\00:03:39.55 make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. 00:03:39.58\00:03:42.78 And the sons of Jeduthun were porters. And all the people 00:03:42.81\00:03:47.31 departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless 00:03:47.34\00:03:51.80 his house. - Continuing in 1st Chronicles, chapter 17, 00:03:51.83\00:03:56.49 and this is the King James version. 00:03:56.52\00:03:58.09 Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David 00:03:58.12\00:04:04.26 said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, 00:04:04.29\00:04:09.82 but the ark of the covenant of the Lord remaineth under 00:04:09.85\00:04:13.26 curtains. Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine 00:04:13.29\00:04:18.47 heart; for God is with thee. And it came to pass the same 00:04:18.50\00:04:22.72 night, that the word of God came to Nathan, Saying, Go and tell 00:04:22.75\00:04:26.98 David my servant, Thus saith the Lord, Thou shalt not build me 00:04:27.01\00:04:31.83 an house to dwell in: For I have not dwelt in an house 00:04:31.86\00:04:35.33 since the day that I brought up Israel, unto this day; 00:04:35.36\00:04:38.60 but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle 00:04:38.63\00:04:42.25 to another. Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, 00:04:42.28\00:04:46.25 spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I 00:04:46.28\00:04:50.38 commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me 00:04:50.41\00:04:53.69 an house of cedars? Now therefore thus shalt thou say 00:04:53.72\00:04:58.02 unto my servant David, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, 00:04:58.05\00:05:01.42 I took thee from the sheepcote even from following the sheep, 00:05:01.45\00:05:05.69 that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel: 00:05:05.72\00:05:08.98 And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, 00:05:09.01\00:05:12.63 and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, 00:05:12.66\00:05:16.07 and have made thee a name like the name of the great men 00:05:16.10\00:05:18.91 that are in the earth. Also I will ordain a place 00:05:18.94\00:05:23.99 for my people Israel and will plant them, 00:05:24.02\00:05:26.35 and they shall dwell in their place, 00:05:26.38\00:05:28.46 and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of 00:05:28.49\00:05:32.22 wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning. 00:05:32.25\00:05:35.37 And since the time that I commanded judges to be over 00:05:35.40\00:05:39.17 my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. 00:05:39.20\00:05:43.33 Furthermore I tell thee that the Lord will build thee an house. 00:05:43.36\00:05:48.44 And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou 00:05:48.47\00:05:52.49 must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed 00:05:52.52\00:05:57.09 after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish 00:05:57.12\00:06:02.08 his kingdom. He shall build me an house, and I will stablish 00:06:02.11\00:06:07.42 his throne forever. I will be his father, and he shall be 00:06:07.45\00:06:11.76 my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took 00:06:11.79\00:06:17.11 it from him that was before thee but I will settle him in mine 00:06:17.14\00:06:21.00 house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be 00:06:21.03\00:06:25.16 established for evermore. according to all these words, 00:06:25.19\00:06:28.70 and according to all this vision so did Nathan speak unto David. 00:06:28.73\00:06:32.47 And David the king came and sat before the Lord, and said, 00:06:32.50\00:06:36.79 Who am I, O Lord God, and what is mine house, that thou hast 00:06:36.82\00:06:42.01 brought me hitherto? And yet this was a small thing in thine 00:06:42.04\00:06:46.65 eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house 00:06:46.68\00:06:50.50 for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according 00:06:50.53\00:06:53.90 to the estate of a man of high degree, O Lord God. 00:06:53.93\00:06:57.66 What can David speak more to thee for the honor of thy 00:06:57.69\00:07:01.81 servant? for thou knowest thy servant. O lord for thy 00:07:01.84\00:07:07.29 servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done 00:07:07.32\00:07:11.01 all this greatness, in making known all these great things. 00:07:11.04\00:07:15.63 O Lord, there is none like thee, neither is there any God 00:07:15.66\00:07:21.36 beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears 00:07:21.39\00:07:24.86 And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, 00:07:24.89\00:07:29.42 whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee 00:07:29.45\00:07:33.72 a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out 00:07:33.75\00:07:36.90 nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of 00:07:36.93\00:07:40.51 Egypt? For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people 00:07:40.54\00:07:44.73 forever; and thou, Lord becamest their God. Therefore now, Lord, 00:07:44.76\00:07:50.66 let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant 00:07:50.69\00:07:54.54 and concerning his house be established forever, 00:07:54.57\00:07:58.26 and do as thou hast said. Let it even be established, 00:07:58.29\00:08:02.97 that thy name may be magnified forever, saying, The Lord of 00:08:03.00\00:08:07.05 hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: 00:08:07.08\00:08:11.37 and let the house of David thy servant be established before 00:08:11.40\00:08:16.00 thee. For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt 00:08:16.03\00:08:21.38 build him an house: therefore thy servant has found in his 00:08:21.41\00:08:25.61 heart to pray before thee. And now, Lord, thou art God, 00:08:25.64\00:08:30.55 and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant: 00:08:30.58\00:08:34.24 Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house 00:08:34.27\00:08:38.32 of thy servant, that it may be before thee forever: 00:08:38.35\00:08:41.72 for thou blessest, O Lord, and it shall be blessed forever. 00:08:41.75\00:08:46.61 Continuing to read in 1st Chronicles, chapter 18. 00:08:46.64\00:08:50.38 This is the King James version. 00:08:50.41\00:08:52.09 Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines 00:08:52.12\00:08:58.73 and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of 00:08:58.76\00:09:02.78 the Philistines. And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became 00:09:02.81\00:09:07.09 David's servants, and brought gifts. And David smote Hadarezer 00:09:07.12\00:09:12.39 king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion 00:09:12.42\00:09:16.16 by the river Euphrates. And David took from him a thousand 00:09:16.19\00:09:20.55 chariots, and 7,000 horsemen, and 20,000 footmen: 00:09:20.58\00:09:24.00 David also hocked all the chariot horses, but reserved 00:09:24.03\00:09:27.80 of them and hundred chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus 00:09:27.83\00:09:32.18 came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians 00:09:32.21\00:09:36.14 two and twenty thousand men. Then David put garrisons in 00:09:36.17\00:09:40.48 Syria-Damascus; and the Syrians became David's servants, 00:09:40.51\00:09:43.97 and brought gifts. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever 00:09:44.00\00:09:48.42 he went. And David took the shields of gold that were on the 00:09:48.45\00:09:51.98 servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 00:09:52.01\00:09:54.78 Likewise for Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadarezer, 00:09:54.81\00:09:58.95 brought David very much brass, wherewith Solomon made 00:09:58.98\00:10:02.05 the brazen sea, and the pillars, and the vessels of brass. 00:10:02.08\00:10:04.66 Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all 00:10:04.69\00:10:10.09 the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah; he sent Hadoram his son 00:10:10.12\00:10:15.23 to king David, to inquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him 00:10:15.26\00:10:18.93 because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him, 00:10:18.96\00:10:22.15 for Hadarezer had war with Tou; and with him all manner of 00:10:22.18\00:10:27.11 vessels of gold and silver and brass. Them also king David 00:10:27.14\00:10:32.25 dedicated unto the Lord, with the silver and the gold that he 00:10:32.28\00:10:34.97 brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, 00:10:35.00\00:10:39.04 and from the children of Ammon, from the Philistines, and from 00:10:39.07\00:10:42.82 Amalek. Moreover Abiushai the son of Zeruiah slew of the 00:10:42.85\00:10:48.28 Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand. 00:10:48.31\00:10:51.61 And he put garrisons in Edom; and all the Edomites became 00:10:51.64\00:10:56.12 David's servants. Thus the Lord preserved David whithersoever 00:10:56.15\00:11:00.31 he went. So David reigned over all Israel and executed judgment 00:11:00.34\00:11:04.97 and justice among all his people. And Joab the son 00:11:05.00\00:11:08.95 of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of 00:11:08.98\00:11:13.23 Ahilud, recorder. And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Abimilech 00:11:13.26\00:11:18.21 the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe; 00:11:18.24\00:11:23.16 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the 00:11:23.19\00:11:28.16 Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king. 00:11:28.19\00:11:32.40 Continuing with 1st Chronicles, chapter 19, 00:11:32.43\00:11:36.84 this is the King James version. Now it came to pass after this, 00:11:36.87\00:11:41.96 that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, 00:11:41.99\00:11:45.24 and his son reigned in his stead. And David said, 00:11:45.27\00:11:48.91 I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, 00:11:48.94\00:11:52.50 because his father shewed kindness to me. 00:11:52.53\00:11:55.75 And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning 00:11:55.78\00:11:59.53 his father. So the servants of David came into the land 00:11:59.56\00:12:02.93 of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him. 00:12:02.96\00:12:05.24 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, 00:12:05.27\00:12:09.62 Thinkest thou that David doth honor thy father, 00:12:09.65\00:12:12.91 that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants 00:12:12.94\00:12:16.78 come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy 00:12:16.81\00:12:20.70 out the land? Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, 00:12:20.73\00:12:24.87 and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst 00:12:24.90\00:12:28.12 hard by their buttocks, and sent them away. 00:12:28.15\00:12:30.67 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were 00:12:30.70\00:12:34.62 served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly 00:12:34.65\00:12:38.71 ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho unto your 00:12:38.74\00:12:42.80 beards be grown and then return. And when the children of Ammon 00:12:42.83\00:12:47.53 saw that they had made themselves odious to David, 00:12:47.56\00:12:50.59 Hanun and the children of Ammon sent 1,000 talents of silver 00:12:50.62\00:12:54.72 to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, 00:12:54.75\00:12:58.64 and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah. 00:12:58.67\00:13:01.96 So they hired 32,000 chariots, and the king of Maachah 00:13:01.99\00:13:07.68 and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. 00:13:07.71\00:13:11.22 And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together 00:13:11.25\00:13:14.91 from their cities, and came to battle. And when David heard of 00:13:14.94\00:13:18.32 it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men. 00:13:18.35\00:13:21.35 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array 00:13:21.38\00:13:24.94 before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come 00:13:24.97\00:13:28.12 were by themselves in the field. Now when Joab saw 00:13:28.15\00:13:31.90 that the battle was set against him before and behind, 00:13:31.93\00:13:35.35 he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array 00:13:35.38\00:13:39.25 against the Syrians. And the rest of the people he delivered 00:13:39.28\00:13:42.64 unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves 00:13:42.67\00:13:46.08 in array against the children of Ammon. And he said, 00:13:46.11\00:13:49.71 If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: 00:13:49.74\00:13:53.15 but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, 00:13:53.18\00:13:55.72 then I will help thee. Be of good courage, and let us behave 00:13:55.75\00:13:59.85 ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of 00:13:59.88\00:14:03.29 our God: and let the Lord do that which is good in his sight. 00:14:03.32\00:14:06.91 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the 00:14:06.94\00:14:11.12 Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him. 00:14:11.15\00:14:14.17 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, 00:14:14.20\00:14:18.33 they likewise fled before Abiashai his brother, 00:14:18.36\00:14:21.46 and entered into the city.
