Hi, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.38\00:00:17.00 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're going to continue reading 00:00:17.03\00:00:19.96 together today in 2nd Kings, the story of when 00:00:19.99\00:00:23.59 king Nebuchadnezzar came against Jerusalem. 00:00:23.62\00:00:26.74 Before we continue, let's pray together. Dear God, thank you 00:00:26.77\00:00:32.24 for bringing us apart at this moment to hear your word, 00:00:32.27\00:00:37.41 and the story of your people, Israel. Help us to learn the 00:00:37.44\00:00:41.52 lesson that you have for each of our lives today, 00:00:41.95\00:00:44.74 in the stories that you have preserved through all these 00:00:44.77\00:00:48.07 centuries. Please send the Holy Spirit now to give us 00:00:48.10\00:00:50.85 wisdom as we hear these words. We love you and thank you 00:00:50.88\00:00:53.86 for loving us. Amen. Were reading in 2nd Kings, 00:00:53.89\00:00:57.89 and king Nebuchadnezzar has come against Jerusalem, 00:00:58.72\00:01:02.21 We're now reading how his servant, Nebuzaradan, 00:01:02.24\00:01:06.24 is handling this situation; picking up in 2nd Kings, 00:01:06.35\00:01:09.94 chapter 25, verse 16. This is the King James Version. 00:01:09.97\00:01:13.83 The two pillars, one sea, and the bases which Solomon had 00:01:13.86\00:01:18.89 made for the house of the Lord; the brass of all these vessels 00:01:18.92\00:01:21.72 was without weight. The height of the one pillar was 18 cubits, 00:01:21.75\00:01:25.73 and the chapiter upon it was brass: and the height of the 00:01:25.77\00:01:28.27 chapiter three cubits; and the wreathen work, and pomegranates 00:01:28.30\00:01:32.28 upon the chapiter round about, all of brass and like unto these 00:01:32.31\00:01:36.26 had the 2nd pillar with wreathen work. And the captain of the 00:01:36.29\00:01:40.29 guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second 00:01:40.44\00:01:44.22 priest, and the 3 keepers of the door: and out of the city 00:01:44.25\00:01:47.93 he took an officer that was set over the men of war, and 5 men 00:01:47.96\00:01:51.50 of them that were in the king's presence, which were found 00:01:51.53\00:01:53.82 in the city, and the principal scribe of the host, which 00:01:53.85\00:01:56.70 mustered the people of the land and threescore men of 00:01:56.73\00:02:00.27 the people of the land that were found in the city: 00:02:00.30\00:02:02.25 and Nebuzaradan captain of the guard took these, and brought 00:02:02.28\00:02:06.26 them to the king of Babylon to Riblah: and the king of Babylon 00:02:06.29\00:02:10.29 smote them, and slew them at Riblah in the land of Hamath. 00:02:10.60\00:02:14.39 So Judah was carried away out of their land. 00:02:14.42\00:02:18.42 And as for the people that remained in the land of Judah, 00:02:18.48\00:02:23.47 whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them 00:02:23.50\00:02:27.58 he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, 00:02:28.14\00:02:31.61 ruler. And when all the captains of the armies, they and their 00:02:31.64\00:02:35.47 men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah 00:02:35.50\00:02:39.28 governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son 00:02:39.31\00:02:45.20 of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah 00:02:45.23\00:02:49.95 the son of Tanhumeth the Nethtophathite, 00:02:49.98\00:02:52.80 and Jaazniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men. 00:02:52.83\00:02:57.68 And Gedaliah sware to them, and to their men, and said unto 00:02:57.71\00:03:01.69 them, Fear not to be the servants of the Chaldees: 00:03:01.92\00:03:04.13 dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon; 00:03:04.16\00:03:06.46 and it will be well with you. But it came to pass 00:03:06.49\00:03:09.84 in the 7th month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, 00:03:09.87\00:03:12.88 the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and 10 men 00:03:12.91\00:03:17.99 with him, and smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews 00:03:18.02\00:03:21.96 and the Chaldees that were with him at Mizpah and all the people 00:03:22.29\00:03:25.11 both small and great, and the captains of the armies, arose, 00:03:25.14\00:03:28.51 and came to Egypt: for they were afraid of the Chaldees. 00:03:28.54\00:03:31.05 And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of 00:03:31.08\00:03:34.01 the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the 12th month 00:03:34.04\00:03:38.04 on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach 00:03:38.59\00:03:42.59 king of Babylon in the year that he began to reign did lift up 00:03:43.01\00:03:47.01 the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison; 00:03:47.14\00:03:50.12 And he spake kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne 00:03:50.15\00:03:54.79 of the kings that were with him in Babylon; And changed 00:03:54.82\00:03:57.91 his prison garments: and he did eat bread continually before him 00:03:57.94\00:04:01.81 all the days of his life. And his allowance was a continual 00:04:01.91\00:04:06.92 allowance given him of the king, a daily rate for every day, 00:04:06.95\00:04:11.94 all the days of his life. We're going to continue now 00:04:11.97\00:04:16.01 with the first book of the Chronicles. 00:04:16.57\00:04:18.80 And in the first 10 chapters there is a very long list 00:04:18.83\00:04:22.83 of genealogies that we're going to skip but we're going to pause 00:04:23.33\00:04:26.37 just briefly to read of one name mentioned in 1st Chronicles, 00:04:26.40\00:04:31.59 chapter 4, and verse 9. This is the King James Version. 00:04:31.62\00:04:36.79 And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren and his mother 00:04:36.82\00:04:45.96 called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow. 00:04:45.99\00:04:49.84 And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou 00:04:49.87\00:04:55.33 wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine 00:04:55.36\00:05:00.34 hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me 00:05:00.37\00:05:03.94 from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted 00:05:03.97\00:05:07.97 him that which he requested. So in the whole list of 00:05:08.16\00:05:11.82 genealogy that goes on for ten chapters, Jabez gets the mention 00:05:11.85\00:05:15.66 for that incredible prayer to God, that his hand would be 00:05:15.69\00:05:19.01 with him to keep him from sin, that he wouldn't cause pain, 00:05:19.04\00:05:21.75 that he would enlarge his territory, and God answered 00:05:21.78\00:05:24.79 that prayer. Let's continue now and keep reading 00:05:24.82\00:05:27.96 in 1st Chronicles, picking up in chapter 10 as the long list of 00:05:27.99\00:05:33.29 genealogies come to an end. We'll start with verse 1 00:05:33.32\00:05:37.29 and this is the King James Version. 00:05:37.32\00:05:38.72 Now the Philistines fought against Israel; 00:05:38.75\00:05:42.49 and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, 00:05:42.52\00:05:44.84 and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. and the Philistines 00:05:44.87\00:05:48.87 followed hard after Saul, and after his sons; 00:05:48.98\00:05:51.65 and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, 00:05:51.68\00:05:54.61 and Malchishua, the sons of Saul. And the battle went sore 00:05:54.64\00:05:59.41 against Saul, and the archers hit him and he was wounded 00:05:59.44\00:06:02.26 of the archers. Then said Saul to his armour bearer, 00:06:02.29\00:06:06.29 Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith; lest these 00:06:06.47\00:06:10.47 uncircumcised come and abuse me. But his armour bearer would not; 00:06:10.74\00:06:14.74 for he was sore afraid. So Saul took a sword, and fell 00:06:15.12\00:06:20.42 upon it. And when his armour bearer saw that Saul was dead, 00:06:20.45\00:06:24.43 He fell likewise on the sword, and died. So Saul died, 00:06:24.53\00:06:28.53 and his 3 sons, and all his house died together. 00:06:28.98\00:06:32.38 And when all the men of Israel that were in the valley saw 00:06:32.41\00:06:35.79 that they fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, 00:06:35.82\00:06:38.19 then they forsook their cities, and fled: and the Philistines 00:06:38.22\00:06:42.08 came and dwelt in them. And it came to pass on the morrow, 00:06:42.11\00:06:46.11 when the Philistines came to strip the slain, that they found 00:06:46.37\00:06:49.84 Saul and his sons fallen in mount Gilboa. And when they had 00:06:49.87\00:06:55.25 stripped him, they took his head, and his armour, 00:06:55.28\00:06:57.70 and sent into the land of the Philistines round about, 00:06:57.73\00:07:01.09 to carry tidings unto their idols, and to the people. 00:07:01.12\00:07:04.12 And they put his armour in the house of their gods and fastened 00:07:04.15\00:07:08.07 his head in the temple of Dagon. And when all Jabesh-gilead heard 00:07:08.10\00:07:13.15 all that the Philistines had done to Saul, they arose, 00:07:13.18\00:07:15.69 all the valiant men, and took away the body of Saul, 00:07:15.72\00:07:19.72 and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh 00:07:20.19\00:07:22.74 and buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh, and fasted 7 days 00:07:22.77\00:07:28.64 So Saul died for his transgression which he committed 00:07:28.67\00:07:33.13 against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, 00:07:33.16\00:07:36.54 which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that 00:07:36.57\00:07:40.14 had a familiar spirit to inquire of it; and inquired not of 00:07:40.17\00:07:45.30 the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom 00:07:45.33\00:07:48.24 unto David the son of Jesse. We'll continue reading 00:07:48.27\00:07:52.27 now in 1st Chronicles, chapter 11, 00:07:52.59\00:07:55.23 and this is the King James Version. 00:07:55.26\00:07:56.79 Then all Israel gathered themselves to David 00:07:56.82\00:08:00.82 unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. 00:08:01.56\00:08:05.56 And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, 00:08:05.63\00:08:09.56 thou wast he that leadest out and broughtest in Israel: 00:08:09.59\00:08:13.59 And the Lord thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people 00:08:13.87\00:08:17.87 Israel and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel. 00:08:18.10\00:08:21.07 Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron 00:08:21.10\00:08:25.00 and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the Lord. 00:08:25.03\00:08:28.06 And they anointed David king over Israel, 00:08:28.09\00:08:30.80 according to word of the Lord by Samuel. 00:08:30.83\00:08:34.15 And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; 00:08:34.18\00:08:38.18 where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. 00:08:38.34\00:08:41.23 And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not 00:08:41.26\00:08:45.26 come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, 00:08:45.55\00:08:49.55 which is the city of David. And David said, Whosoever smiteth 00:08:49.63\00:08:53.63 the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. 00:08:54.14\00:08:57.86 So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. 00:08:57.89\00:09:02.85 And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it 00:09:02.88\00:09:06.44 the city of David. And he built the city round about, 00:09:06.47\00:09:10.37 even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of 00:09:10.40\00:09:13.68 the city. So David waxed greater and greater: 00:09:13.71\00:09:18.75 for the Lord of hosts was with him. These also are the chief 00:09:18.78\00:09:23.78 of the mighty men whom David had: who strengthened themselves 00:09:23.81\00:09:27.48 with him in his kingdom, and with all Israel, to make him 00:09:27.51\00:09:30.95 king, according to the word of the Lord concerning Israel. 00:09:30.98\00:09:34.23 And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had; 00:09:34.26\00:09:38.62 Jashobeam, an Hachmonite, the chief of the captains: 00:09:38.65\00:09:43.49 he lifted up his spear against 300 slain by him at one time. 00:09:43.52\00:09:48.75 And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, 00:09:48.78\00:09:52.96 who was one of the 3 mighties. He was with David at Pasdammim, 00:09:53.26\00:09:58.57 and there the Philistines were gathered together to battle, 00:09:58.60\00:10:01.02 where was a parcel of ground full of barley; and the people 00:10:01.05\00:10:04.85 fled from before the Philistines and they set themselves 00:10:04.88\00:10:08.88 in the midst of that parcel, and delivered it, and slew the 00:10:09.02\00:10:12.16 Philistines. And the Lord saved them by a great deliverance. 00:10:12.19\00:10:15.80 Now 3 of the 30 captains went down to the rock to David, 00:10:15.83\00:10:20.77 into the cave of Adullam; and the host of the Philistines 00:10:20.80\00:10:24.36 encamped in the valley of Rephaim. And David was then 00:10:24.39\00:10:28.34 in the hole, and the Philistines garrison was then at Bethlehem. 00:10:28.37\00:10:31.31 And David longed, and said, O that one would give me drink 00:10:31.34\00:10:35.34 of the water of the well of Bethlehem, that is at the gate! 00:10:35.94\00:10:38.80 And the 3 brake through the host of the Philistines, 00:10:38.83\00:10:43.12 and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the 00:10:43.15\00:10:46.49 gate and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not 00:10:46.52\00:10:50.07 drink of it, but poured it out to the Lord, and said, 00:10:50.10\00:10:53.55 My God forbid it me, that I should do this thing: 00:10:53.58\00:10:57.13 shall I drink the blood of these men that have put their lives 00:10:57.16\00:11:00.93 in jeopardy? for with the jeopardy of their lives they 00:11:00.96\00:11:04.61 brought it. Therefore he would not drink it. These things 00:11:04.64\00:11:09.01 did these 3 mightiest. And Abishai the brother of Joab, 00:11:09.40\00:11:13.40 he was chief of the three: for lifting up his spear against 00:11:14.24\00:11:18.24 300, he slew them, and had a name among the three. 00:11:18.69\00:11:22.31 Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; 00:11:22.34\00:11:25.96 for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not 00:11:25.99\00:11:29.22 to the first three. Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a 00:11:29.25\00:11:33.25 valiant men of Kabzeel, who had done man acts; he slew two 00:11:33.85\00:11:39.22 lion like men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion 00:11:39.25\00:11:44.92 in a pit in a snowy day. And he slew an Egyptian, a man of 00:11:44.95\00:11:50.66 great stature, 5 cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was 00:11:50.69\00:11:54.53 a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him 00:11:54.73\00:11:57.38 with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's 00:11:57.41\00:12:00.19 hand, and slew him with his own spear. These things did Benaiah 00:12:00.22\00:12:04.90 the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. 00:12:04.93\00:12:08.51 Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to 00:12:08.54\00:12:14.11 the first three: and David set him over his guard. 00:12:14.14\00:12:18.25 And for the rest of first Chronicles, chapter 11, 00:12:18.61\00:12:22.61 we see a continued list of all the mighty men of David. 00:12:22.71\00:12:25.63 We're going to continue now with chapter 12, and verse 1. 00:12:25.66\00:12:29.16 and this is the King James Version. 00:12:29.19\00:12:30.75 Now these are they that came to David to Ziklag, while he yet 00:12:30.78\00:12:36.07 kept himself close because of Saul the son of Kish: 00:12:36.10\00:12:39.54 and they were among the mighty men helpers of the war. 00:12:39.57\00:12:42.19 They were armed with bows, and could use both the right hand 00:12:42.22\00:12:46.24 and the left in hurling stones and shooting arrows out of a bow 00:12:46.27\00:12:49.47 even of Saul's brethren of Benjamin. 00:12:49.50\00:12:51.39 And again continuing with a long list of names, we're going 00:12:51.42\00:12:55.55 to skip to verse 14. These were the sons of Gad. 00:12:55.58\00:12:59.51 Captains of the host: one of the least was over and hundred, 00:12:59.54\00:13:03.01 and the greatest over 1,000. These are they that went over 00:13:03.04\00:13:06.82 Jordan in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks; 00:13:06.85\00:13:10.33 and they put to flight all them of the valleys, both toward the 00:13:10.36\00:13:13.79 east, and toward the west. And there came of the children 00:13:13.82\00:13:17.68 of Benjamin and Judah to the hold unto David. 00:13:17.71\00:13:20.83 And David went out to meet them and answered and said unto 00:13:20.86\00:13:23.85 them, if ye be come peaceably unto me to help me, 00:13:23.88\00:13:27.46 mine heart shall be knit unto you: but if ye be come to betray 00:13:27.49\00:13:32.52 me to mine enemies, seeing there is no wrong in mine hands, 00:13:32.55\00:13:36.14 the God of our fathers, look thereon, and rebuke it. 00:13:36.17\00:13:40.04 Then the spirit came upon Amasai who was chief of the captains, 00:13:40.07\00:13:44.89 and he said, Thine are we, David and on thy side, 00:13:44.92\00:13:48.47 thou son of Jesse: peace, peace be unto thee, and peace be to 00:13:48.50\00:13:53.20 thine helpers; for thy God helpeth thee. 00:13:53.23\00:13:55.52 Then David received them, and made them captains of the band. 00:13:55.55\00:14:00.17 And there fell some of Manasseh to David, when he came with the 00:14:00.20\00:14:04.19 Philistines against Saul to battle: but they helped them 00:14:04.22\00:14:07.16 not: for the lords of the Philistines upon advisement 00:14:07.19\00:14:10.59 sent him away, saying, He will fall to his master Saul 00:14:10.62\00:14:13.97 to the jeopardy of our heads. As he went to Ziklag, there fell 00:14:14.00\00:14:17.75 to him of Manasseh, Adnah and Jozabad, and Jediael, 00:14:17.78\00:14:21.47 and Michael, and Jozabad, and Elihu, and Zilthai, captains 00:14:21.50\00:14:25.14 of the thousands that were of Manasseh. And they helped David 00:14:25.17\00:14:29.00 against the band of the rovers: for they were all mighty men 00:14:29.03\00:14:31.84 of valour, and were captains in the host.
