Hi, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.00\00:00:16.97 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to be reading 00:00:17.00\00:00:19.48 together from 2nd Kings. As we've read these stories of the 00:00:19.51\00:00:23.09 different kings and Israel and Judah, we're marked before how 00:00:23.12\00:00:27.29 there will be those kings who followed what the Lord said. 00:00:27.32\00:00:31.53 The Bible notes that they did not take down the high places. 00:00:31.56\00:00:35.56 They continued to offer sacrifices where they were not 00:00:35.59\00:00:39.00 supposed to, and in ways and to God that were not of 00:00:39.03\00:00:44.11 the God of heaven. And so even when the kings were following 00:00:44.14\00:00:47.76 the true God, they did not remove the high places. 00:00:47.79\00:00:51.12 Today, we're going to read a story of one of the kings who 00:00:51.15\00:00:54.47 did tear down the high places. But before we start, 00:00:54.50\00:00:56.78 let's pray together. Dear God thank you so much for 00:00:56.81\00:01:01.04 the stories that you have given to us as instruction for us to 00:01:01.07\00:01:06.62 learn from today. Please open our hearts now as we read of 00:01:06.65\00:01:10.16 king Hezekiah. And may we yield every high place of our heart 00:01:10.19\00:01:15.81 and our life completely to you. We love you so much 00:01:15.84\00:01:19.49 and thank you for loving us. We're reading in 2nd Kings, 00:01:19.52\00:01:23.84 chapter 18 and we're just beginning the story of 00:01:23.87\00:01:26.63 King Hezekiah. This is the King James Version 00:01:26.66\00:01:29.15 and we're starting with verse 4. He removed the high places, 00:01:29.18\00:01:34.38 and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake 00:01:34.41\00:01:38.29 in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: 00:01:38.32\00:01:41.40 for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it 00:01:41.43\00:01:45.28 and he called it Nehushtan. He trusted in the Lord God of 00:01:45.31\00:01:50.92 Israel; so that after him was none like him among all 00:01:50.95\00:01:54.65 the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. For he clave 00:01:54.68\00:01:59.23 to the Lord, and departed not from following him, 00:01:59.26\00:02:02.27 but kept his commandments, which the Lord commanded Moses. 00:02:02.30\00:02:06.05 and the Lord was with him; and he prospered whithersoever 00:02:06.08\00:02:10.98 he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, 00:02:11.01\00:02:14.77 and served him not. He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, 00:02:14.80\00:02:19.04 and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen 00:02:19.07\00:02:22.16 to the fenced city. And it came to pass in the 4th year of king 00:02:22.19\00:02:26.51 Hezekiah, which was the 7th year of Hoshea son of Elah king of 00:02:26.54\00:02:30.86 Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, 00:02:30.89\00:02:35.35 and besieged it. And at the end of three years they took it: 00:02:35.38\00:02:38.00 even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth 00:02:38.03\00:02:41.06 year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken. And the king 00:02:41.09\00:02:45.97 of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in 00:02:46.00\00:02:50.08 Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of 00:02:50.11\00:02:53.89 the Medes: Because they obeyed not the voice of the Lord their 00:02:53.92\00:02:57.37 God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses 00:02:57.40\00:03:00.38 the servant of the Lord commanded, and would not hear 00:03:00.41\00:03:03.32 them, nor do them. Now in the 14th year of king Hezekiah 00:03:03.35\00:03:08.33 did Senacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced 00:03:08.36\00:03:12.68 cities of Judah, and took them. And Hezekiah king of Judah, 00:03:12.71\00:03:17.54 sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended 00:03:17.57\00:03:22.37 return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. 00:03:22.40\00:03:26.57 And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah 00:03:26.60\00:03:29.75 king of Judah 300 talents of silver and 30 talents of gold. 00:03:29.78\00:03:33.97 And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the 00:03:34.00\00:03:37.76 house of the Lord, and in the treasures of the king's house. 00:03:37.79\00:03:40.65 At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors 00:03:40.68\00:03:45.19 of the temple of the Lord, and from the pillars which Hezekiah 00:03:45.22\00:03:48.12 king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria. 00:03:48.15\00:03:52.14 And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris 00:03:52.17\00:03:56.85 and Rabshakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host 00:03:56.88\00:04:01.05 against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem and 00:04:01.08\00:04:04.48 when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of 00:04:04.51\00:04:08.02 the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field. 00:04:08.05\00:04:11.10 And when they had called to the king, there came out to them 00:04:11.13\00:04:14.85 Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, 00:04:14.88\00:04:18.95 and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph 00:04:18.98\00:04:22.91 the recorder. And Rabshakeh said unto them, Speak ye now 00:04:22.94\00:04:27.83 to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, 00:04:27.86\00:04:31.23 What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 00:04:31.26\00:04:34.30 Thou sayest - but they are vain words - I have counsel and 00:04:34.33\00:04:39.47 strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, 00:04:39.50\00:04:42.86 that thou rebellest against me? Now, behold, thou trustest upon 00:04:42.89\00:04:48.54 the staff of this bruised reed, upon Egypt, on which if a man 00:04:48.57\00:04:52.57 lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh 00:04:52.60\00:04:56.31 king of Egypt unto all that trust on him. 00:04:56.34\00:04:58.29 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the Lord our God: 00:04:58.32\00:05:01.94 is not that he, whose high places and whose altars 00:05:01.97\00:05:06.16 Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem 00:05:06.19\00:05:10.54 Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem? 00:05:10.57\00:05:12.99 Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of 00:05:13.02\00:05:17.73 Assyria, and I will deliver thee 2,000 horses, if thou be able 00:05:17.76\00:05:22.25 on thy part to set riders upon them. How then wilt thou turn 00:05:22.28\00:05:26.89 away the face of one captain of the least of my master's 00:05:26.92\00:05:30.21 servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots 00:05:30.24\00:05:32.76 and for horsemen? Am I now come up without the Lord against 00:05:32.79\00:05:36.66 this place to destroy it? The Lord said to me, Go up against 00:05:36.69\00:05:40.49 this land, and destroy it. Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, 00:05:40.52\00:05:46.34 and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, 00:05:46.37\00:05:51.87 to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: 00:05:51.90\00:05:56.58 and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of 00:05:56.61\00:06:00.74 the people that are on the wall. But Ragshakeh said unto them, 00:06:00.77\00:06:05.70 Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak 00:06:05.73\00:06:09.39 these words? Hath he not sent me to the men which sit on 00:06:09.42\00:06:12.66 the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink 00:06:12.69\00:06:16.04 their own piss with you? Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with 00:06:16.07\00:06:20.39 a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, 00:06:20.42\00:06:23.28 Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria: Thus saith 00:06:23.31\00:06:27.92 the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not 00:06:27.95\00:06:31.54 be able to deliver you out of his hand: Neither let Hezekiah 00:06:31.57\00:06:36.31 make you trust in the Lord, saying, The Lord will surely 00:06:36.34\00:06:39.33 deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand 00:06:39.36\00:06:42.83 of the king of Assyria, Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith 00:06:42.86\00:06:47.09 the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present 00:06:47.13\00:06:51.71 and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine 00:06:51.74\00:06:56.43 and everyone of his fig tree, and drink ye everyone the waters 00:06:56.46\00:07:01.11 of his cistern: Until I come and take you away to a land like 00:07:01.14\00:07:06.44 your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and 00:07:06.47\00:07:10.22 vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, 00:07:10.25\00:07:14.27 and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah when he persuadeth 00:07:14.30\00:07:19.47 you, saying, The Lord will deliver us. Hath any of the gods 00:07:19.50\00:07:23.39 of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the 00:07:23.42\00:07:26.87 king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? 00:07:26.90\00:07:30.96 where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? 00:07:30.99\00:07:34.63 have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand? Who are they among 00:07:34.66\00:07:39.13 all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their 00:07:39.16\00:07:41.12 country out of mine hand, that the Lord should deliver 00:07:41.15\00:07:43.77 Jerusalem out of mine hand? But the people held their peace, 00:07:43.80\00:07:48.22 and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, 00:07:48.25\00:07:52.33 saying, Answer him not. Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, 00:07:52.36\00:07:58.48 which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah 00:07:58.51\00:08:03.23 the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes 00:08:03.26\00:08:08.04 rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh. 00:08:08.07\00:08:12.27 We're continuing in 2nd Kings, chapter 19, 00:08:12.30\00:08:17.78 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent 00:08:17.81\00:08:23.09 his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into 00:08:23.12\00:08:27.45 the house of the Lord. And he sent Eliakim, which was over the 00:08:27.48\00:08:31.85 household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the 00:08:31.88\00:08:34.71 priests, covered with sackcloth to Isaiah the prophet 00:08:34.74\00:08:39.29 the son of Amoz. And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, 00:08:39.32\00:08:44.06 This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and blasphemy: 00:08:44.09\00:08:48.66 for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength 00:08:48.69\00:08:52.48 to bring forth. It may be the Lord thy God will hear all 00:08:52.51\00:08:56.89 the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master 00:08:56.92\00:09:00.13 hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words 00:09:00.16\00:09:05.20 which the Lord thy God hath heard: 00:09:05.23\00:09:06.82 wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that are left. 00:09:06.85\00:09:10.68 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah. And Isaiah said 00:09:10.71\00:09:15.56 unto them, Thus shall ye say to your master, 00:09:15.59\00:09:19.10 Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid of the words which thou 00:09:19.13\00:09:23.89 hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria 00:09:23.92\00:09:27.17 have blasphemed me. Behold, I will send a blast upon him, 00:09:27.20\00:09:32.67 and he shall hear a rumor, and shall return to his own land; 00:09:32.70\00:09:36.31 and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land. 00:09:36.34\00:09:40.22 So Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring 00:09:40.25\00:09:45.02 against Libnah: for he heard that he was departed from 00:09:45.05\00:09:48.74 Lachish. And when he hear say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, 00:09:48.77\00:09:53.23 Behold, he is come out to fight against thee: he sent messengers 00:09:53.26\00:09:57.27 again unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah 00:09:57.30\00:10:01.19 king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God in whom thou trusteth 00:10:01.22\00:10:04.80 deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be delivered into the 00:10:04.83\00:10:07.86 hand of the king of Assyria. Behold, thou hast heard 00:10:07.89\00:10:11.08 what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying 00:10:11.11\00:10:15.18 them utterly: and shalt thou be delivered? Have the gods of the 00:10:15.21\00:10:19.76 nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed; 00:10:19.79\00:10:22.92 as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which 00:10:22.95\00:10:27.05 were in Thelasar? Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of 00:10:27.08\00:10:31.22 Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena and Ivah? 00:10:31.25\00:10:35.65 And Hezekiah received the letter of the hand of the messengers, 00:10:35.68\00:10:40.40 and read it: and Hezekiah went up into the house of the Lord, 00:10:40.43\00:10:45.66 and spread it before the Lord. And Hezekiah prayed before 00:10:45.69\00:10:49.70 the Lord, and said, O Lord God of Israel which dwellest between 00:10:49.73\00:10:53.98 the cherubims, thou art the God even thou alone, of all 00:10:54.01\00:10:58.29 the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made heaven and earth. 00:10:58.32\00:11:02.26 Lord, bow down thine ear, and hear: open, Lord, thine eyes, 00:11:02.29\00:11:09.41 and see: and hear the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent him 00:11:09.44\00:11:14.49 to reproach the living God. Of a truth Lord, the kings of Assyria 00:11:14.52\00:11:19.39 have destroyed the nations and their lands, and have cast their 00:11:19.42\00:11:23.59 gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of 00:11:23.62\00:11:28.16 men's hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed 00:11:28.19\00:11:32.55 them. Now therefore, O Lord our God, I beseech thee, save thou 00:11:32.58\00:11:38.15 us out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know 00:11:38.18\00:11:44.38 that thou art the Lord God, even thou only. Then Isaiah the son 00:11:44.41\00:11:50.84 of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God 00:11:50.87\00:11:54.23 of Israel, That which thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib 00:11:54.26\00:11:58.87 king of Assyria I have heard. This is the word that the Lord 00:11:58.90\00:12:03.47 hath spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion hath 00:12:03.50\00:12:07.93 despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of 00:12:07.96\00:12:11.89 Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. Whom hast thou 00:12:11.92\00:12:15.90 reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted 00:12:15.93\00:12:19.50 thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against 00:12:19.53\00:12:23.56 the Holy One of Israel. By thy messengers thou hast reproached 00:12:23.59\00:12:27.60 the Lord, and hast said, With the multitude of my chariots 00:12:27.63\00:12:30.54 I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of 00:12:30.57\00:12:32.70 Lebanon, and will cut down the tall cedars thereof, 00:12:32.73\00:12:35.24 and the choice fir trees thereof and I will enter into the 00:12:35.27\00:12:37.96 lodgings of his borders and into the forest of his Carmel. 00:12:37.99\00:12:41.48 I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my 00:12:41.51\00:12:46.23 feet have I dried up all the rivers of besieged places. 00:12:46.26\00:12:49.56 Hast thou not heard long ago how I have done it, and of ancient 00:12:49.59\00:12:54.67 times that I have formed it? now have I brought it to pass, 00:12:54.70\00:12:58.96 that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous 00:12:58.99\00:13:03.29 heaps. Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, 00:13:03.32\00:13:07.23 they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the 00:13:07.26\00:13:11.22 grass of the field and as the green herb, as the grass on the 00:13:11.25\00:13:14.77 house tops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up. 00:13:14.80\00:13:17.63 But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, 00:13:17.66\00:13:22.72 and thy rage against me. Because thy rage against me and thy 00:13:22.75\00:13:27.39 tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will put my 00:13:27.42\00:13:30.60 hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn 00:13:30.63\00:13:35.15 thee back by the way by which thou camest. And this shall be 00:13:35.18\00:13:39.74 a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such things as grow 00:13:39.77\00:13:43.06 of themselves, and in the second year that which springeth of the 00:13:43.09\00:13:46.74 same; and in the 3rd year sow ye and reap, and plant vineyards, 00:13:46.77\00:13:51.09 and eat the fruits thereof. And the remnant that is escaped 00:13:51.12\00:13:55.42 of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, 00:13:55.45\00:13:59.52 and bear fruit upward.
