Hello and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.29\00:00:18.49 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're reading from the book of 00:00:18.52\00:00:21.75 2nd Kings. We were reading the story of Naaman the last time we 00:00:21.78\00:00:25.45 were together, and we're just about to conclude that now; 00:00:25.48\00:00:28.08 but before we read, let's pray together. 00:00:28.11\00:00:29.68 Dear Lord thank you that just as you washed 00:00:29.72\00:00:34.69 and cleansed Naaman from his leprosy you've washed and 00:00:34.72\00:00:37.20 cleansed us from our sin and the death that came because of it. 00:00:37.23\00:00:41.19 Please send your Holy Spirit in a special way now to make these 00:00:41.22\00:00:45.56 words become life and light and bread and meat and a guidance 00:00:45.59\00:00:50.87 to us in the ways that we are walking, that we will walk more 00:00:50.90\00:00:53.88 closely with you. We love you so much and thank you for 00:00:53.91\00:00:56.76 loving us. Amen Naaman had been cured of his 00:00:56.79\00:01:01.00 leprosy and had gone back to the prophet Elisha to bring him 00:01:01.03\00:01:05.13 gifts; but Elisha had refused those gifts and so Naaman had 00:01:05.16\00:01:09.58 departed on his way to go home. We're going to pick up the story 00:01:09.61\00:01:12.43 there. We're in 2nd Kings, chapter 5, beginning in verse 20 00:01:12.46\00:01:17.55 But Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, 00:01:17.58\00:01:22.83 said, Behold, my master has spared Naaman the Syrian 00:01:22.86\00:01:27.18 in not receiving at his hand that which he brought: 00:01:27.21\00:01:30.35 but, as the Lord liveth, I will run after him, and take somewhat 00:01:30.38\00:01:33.40 of him. So Gehazi followed after Naaman. And when Naaman saw him 00:01:33.43\00:01:38.24 running after him, he lighted down from the chariot to meet 00:01:38.27\00:01:40.67 him, and said, Is all well? And he said, All is well. My master 00:01:40.70\00:01:45.76 hath sent me, saying, Behold, even now there be come to me 00:01:45.79\00:01:50.48 from mount Ephraim two young men of the sons of the prophets: 00:01:50.51\00:01:53.69 give them, I pray thee, a talent of silver, and two changes of 00:01:53.72\00:01:57.92 garments. And Naaman said, Be content, take two talents. 00:01:57.95\00:02:03.07 And he urged him, and bound two talents of silver in 2 bags, 00:02:03.10\00:02:07.47 and two changes of garments and laid them upon 2 of his servants 00:02:07.50\00:02:11.82 and they bare them before him. And when he came to the tower 00:02:11.85\00:02:15.71 he took them from their hand, and bestowed them in the house: 00:02:15.74\00:02:18.63 and he let the men go, and they departed. But he went in, and 00:02:18.66\00:02:23.10 stood before his master. And Elisha said unto him, 00:02:23.13\00:02:26.64 Whence comest thou, Gehazi? And he said, Thy servant went 00:02:26.67\00:02:33.27 no whither. And he said unto him, Went not mine heart with 00:02:33.30\00:02:38.82 thee, when the man turned again from his chariot to meet thee? 00:02:38.85\00:02:42.46 Is it a time to receive money, and to receive garments, 00:02:42.49\00:02:46.44 and oliveyards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, 00:02:46.47\00:02:49.70 and menservants, and maidservants? 00:02:49.73\00:02:51.30 The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cleave unto thee, 00:02:51.33\00:02:55.98 and unto thy seed for ever. And he went out from his presence 00:02:56.01\00:03:01.04 a leper as white as snow. Continuing now in 2nd Kings, 00:03:01.07\00:03:07.93 chapter 6, and this is the King James Version. 00:03:07.96\00:03:11.40 And the sons of the prophets said unto Elisha, Behold now, 00:03:11.43\00:03:16.39 the place where we dwell with thee is too strait for us. 00:03:16.42\00:03:19.69 Let us go, we pray thee, unto Jordan, and take thence 00:03:19.72\00:03:23.31 every man a beam, and let us make us a place there, 00:03:23.34\00:03:26.52 where we may dwell. And he answered, Go ye. 00:03:26.55\00:03:30.51 And one said, Be content, I pray thee, and go with thy servants. 00:03:30.54\00:03:35.49 And he answered, I will go. So he went with them. 00:03:35.52\00:03:39.13 And when they came to Jordan, they cut down wood. 00:03:39.16\00:03:41.19 But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water 00:03:41.22\00:03:46.01 and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed. 00:03:46.04\00:03:49.88 And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him 00:03:49.91\00:03:54.44 the place. And he cut down a stick, and cast it in thither; 00:03:54.47\00:03:58.52 and the iron did swim. Therefore said he, 00:03:58.55\00:04:03.12 Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it. 00:04:03.15\00:04:06.48 Then the king of Syria warred against Israel, and took counsel 00:04:06.51\00:04:11.19 with his servants, saying, In such and such a place 00:04:11.22\00:04:14.17 shall be my camp. And the man of God sent unto the king 00:04:14.20\00:04:18.32 of Israel, saying, Beware that thou pass not such a place; 00:04:18.35\00:04:22.52 for thither the Syrians are come down. And the king of Israel 00:04:22.55\00:04:26.95 sent to the place which the man of God told him and warned him 00:04:26.98\00:04:29.74 of, and saved himself there not once nor twice. 00:04:29.77\00:04:33.68 Therefore the heart of the king of Syria was sore troubled 00:04:33.71\00:04:37.83 for this thing; and he called his servants, and said unto them 00:04:37.86\00:04:40.90 Will ye not shew me which of us is for the king of Israel? 00:04:40.93\00:04:44.80 And one of his servants said, None, my lord, O king: 00:04:44.83\00:04:48.58 but Elisha, the prophet that is in Israel, telleth the king of 00:04:48.61\00:04:52.27 Israel the words that thou speakest in thy bedchamber. 00:04:52.30\00:04:54.97 And he said, Go and spy where he is, that I may send and fetch 00:04:55.00\00:05:00.27 him. And it was told him, saying, Behold, he is in Dothan. 00:05:00.30\00:05:04.72 Therefore sent he thither horses and chariots, and a great host: 00:05:04.75\00:05:10.84 and they came by night, and compassed the city about. 00:05:10.87\00:05:14.77 And when the servant of the man of God was risen early, 00:05:14.80\00:05:18.57 and gone forth, behold, an host compassed the city both with 00:05:18.60\00:05:23.23 horses and chariots. And his servant said unto him, Alas, 00:05:23.26\00:05:26.92 my master! how shall we do? And he answered, Fear not: 00:05:26.95\00:05:31.28 for they that be with us are more than they that be with them 00:05:31.31\00:05:35.73 And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord I pray thee, open his eyes, 00:05:35.76\00:05:42.44 that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man 00:05:42.47\00:05:46.71 and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses 00:05:46.74\00:05:51.08 and chariots of fire round about Elisha. And when they came down 00:05:51.11\00:05:56.27 to him, Elisha prayed unto the Lord and said, Smite this people 00:05:56.30\00:05:59.67 I pray thee with blindness. And he smote them with blindness 00:05:59.70\00:06:03.19 according to the word of Elisha. And Elisha said unto them, 00:06:03.22\00:06:06.99 This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I 00:06:07.02\00:06:11.61 will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them 00:06:11.64\00:06:14.79 to Samaria. And it came to pass, when they were come into Samaria 00:06:14.82\00:06:18.61 that Elisha said, Lord, open the eyes of these men, that they may 00:06:18.64\00:06:22.09 see. And the Lord opened their eyes, and they saw: and behold, 00:06:22.12\00:06:26.69 they were in the midst of Samaria. And the king of Israel 00:06:26.72\00:06:30.73 said unto Elisha, when he saw them, My father, shall I smite 00:06:30.76\00:06:34.35 them? shall I smite them? And he answered, Thou shalt not 00:06:34.38\00:06:37.71 smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken 00:06:37.74\00:06:40.57 captive with thy sword, and with thy bow? set bread and water 00:06:40.60\00:06:43.89 before them, that they may eat and drink and go to their master 00:06:43.92\00:06:46.25 And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had 00:06:46.28\00:06:49.88 eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their 00:06:49.91\00:06:52.23 master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land 00:06:52.26\00:06:55.97 of Israel. And it came to pass after this, that Benhadad 00:06:56.00\00:07:00.35 king of Syria gathered all his host, and went up, and besieged 00:07:00.38\00:07:03.24 Samaria. And there was a great famine in Samaria: and behold, 00:07:03.27\00:07:07.61 they besieged it, until an ass's head was sold for fourscore 00:07:07.64\00:07:11.14 pieces of silver, and the fourth part of a cab of dove's dung 00:07:11.17\00:07:15.06 for 5 pieces of silver. And as the king of Israel was passing 00:07:15.09\00:07:19.06 by upon the wall, there cried a woman unto him, saying, Help, 00:07:19.09\00:07:22.85 my lord, O king. And he said, If the Lord do not help thee, 00:07:22.88\00:07:26.76 whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the 00:07:26.79\00:07:29.75 winepress? And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? 00:07:29.78\00:07:33.46 and she answered, This woman said unto me, Give thy son, 00:07:33.49\00:07:37.76 that we may eat him today, and we will eat my son tomorrow. 00:07:37.79\00:07:40.91 So we boiled my son, and did eat him: and I said unto her on the 00:07:40.94\00:07:44.08 next day, Give thy son, that we may eat him: and she hath hid 00:07:44.11\00:07:47.06 her son. And it came to pass, when the king heard the words 00:07:47.09\00:07:50.62 of the woman, that he rent his clothes; and he passed by upon 00:07:50.65\00:07:54.67 the wall, and the people looked and behold he had sackcloth 00:07:54.70\00:07:58.88 within upon his flesh. Then he said, God do so and more also 00:07:58.91\00:08:04.72 to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand 00:08:04.75\00:08:08.19 on him this day. But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat 00:08:08.22\00:08:12.62 with him; and the king sent a man from before him: 00:08:12.65\00:08:15.60 but ere the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, 00:08:15.63\00:08:19.19 See ye how this son of a murderer hath sent to take away 00:08:19.22\00:08:22.72 mine head? look when the messenger cometh, 00:08:22.75\00:08:25.41 shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: 00:08:25.44\00:08:27.54 is not the sound of his master's feet behind him? 00:08:27.57\00:08:30.43 And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger 00:08:30.46\00:08:34.19 came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the Lord 00:08:34.22\00:08:38.01 what should I wait for the Lord any longer? 00:08:38.04\00:08:41.02 We're continuing in the book of 2nd Kings, chapter 7. 00:08:41.05\00:08:44.48 This is the King James Version. 00:08:44.51\00:08:46.60 Then Elisha said, Hear ye the word of the Lord; 00:08:46.63\00:08:50.93 Thus saith the Lord, Tomorrow about this time shall a measure 00:08:50.96\00:08:56.27 of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of 00:08:56.30\00:08:59.77 barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. 00:08:59.80\00:09:02.48 Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of 00:09:02.51\00:09:07.69 God, and said, Behold, if the Lord would make windows 00:09:07.72\00:09:10.78 in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt 00:09:10.81\00:09:15.22 see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 00:09:15.25\00:09:18.67 And there were 4 leprous men at the entering in of the gate: 00:09:18.70\00:09:23.64 and they said one to another, Why sit we here until we die? 00:09:23.67\00:09:28.68 If we say, We will enter into the city, then the famine 00:09:28.71\00:09:31.81 is in the city, and we shall die there: and if we sit still here, 00:09:31.84\00:09:36.22 we die also. Now therefore come, and let us fall unto the host 00:09:36.25\00:09:40.79 of the Syrians: if they save us alive, we shall live and if they 00:09:40.82\00:09:43.79 kill us, we shall but die. And they rose up in the twilight, 00:09:43.82\00:09:47.89 to go into the camp of the Syrians: and when they were 00:09:47.92\00:09:50.62 come to the uttermost part of the camp of Syria, behold, 00:09:50.65\00:09:54.08 there was no man there. For the Lord had made the host of the 00:09:54.11\00:09:58.31 Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, 00:09:58.34\00:10:01.71 even the noise of a great host: and they said one to another, 00:10:01.74\00:10:05.04 Lo, the king of Israel hath hired against us the kings 00:10:05.07\00:10:07.70 of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians to come upon us 00:10:07.73\00:10:10.36 Wherefore they arose, and fled in the twilight, and left their 00:10:10.39\00:10:14.50 tents, and their horses, and their asses, even the camp as 00:10:14.53\00:10:18.40 it was, and fled for their life. And when these lepers came 00:10:18.43\00:10:23.21 to the uttermost part of the camp, they went into one tent, 00:10:23.24\00:10:25.86 and did eat and drink, and carried thence silver, and gold, 00:10:25.89\00:10:29.30 and raiment, and went and hid it; and came again, and entered 00:10:29.33\00:10:33.03 into another tent, and carried thence also and went and hid it. 00:10:33.06\00:10:37.08 Then they said, one to another, We do not well: this day 00:10:37.11\00:10:41.95 is a day of good tidings, and we hold our peace: if we tarry 00:10:41.98\00:10:46.62 till the morning light, some mischief will come upon us: 00:10:46.65\00:10:48.88 now therefore come, that we may go and tell the king's household 00:10:48.91\00:10:52.95 So they came and called unto the porter of the city: 00:10:52.98\00:10:56.01 and they told them, saying, We came to the camp of the Syrians, 00:10:56.04\00:10:59.07 and behold, there was no man there, neither voice of man, 00:10:59.10\00:11:02.53 but horses tied, and asses tied, and the tents as they were. 00:11:02.56\00:11:06.26 And he called the porters; and they told it to the king's house 00:11:06.29\00:11:10.05 within. And the king arose in the night, and said unto his 00:11:10.08\00:11:13.52 servants, I will now shew you what the Syrians have done to us 00:11:13.55\00:11:16.94 They know that we be hungry; therefore are they gone out 00:11:16.97\00:11:20.58 of the camp to hide themselves in the field, saying, 00:11:20.61\00:11:23.80 When they come out of the city, we shall catch them alive, 00:11:23.83\00:11:26.69 and get into the city. And one of his servants answered 00:11:26.72\00:11:30.27 and said, Let some take, I pray thee, five of the horses that 00:11:30.30\00:11:34.19 remain, which are left in the city. Behold, they are as all 00:11:34.22\00:11:37.54 the multitude of the Israel that are left in it: 00:11:37.57\00:11:39.20 behold, I say, they are even as all the multitude 00:11:39.23\00:11:42.04 of the Israelites that are consumed: and let us send 00:11:42.07\00:11:45.23 and see. They took therefore two chariot horses; and the king 00:11:45.26\00:11:50.02 sent after the host of the Syrians, saying, Go and see. 00:11:50.05\00:11:53.38 And they went after them unto Jordan: and, lo, all the way 00:11:53.41\00:11:58.57 was full of garments and vessels, which the Syrians 00:11:58.60\00:12:01.66 had cast away in their haste. And the messengers returned, 00:12:01.69\00:12:05.35 and told the king. And the people went out, and spoiled 00:12:05.38\00:12:08.99 the tents of the Syrians. So a measure of fine flour was sold 00:12:09.02\00:12:12.86 for a shekel, and 2 measures of barley for a shekel, according 00:12:12.89\00:12:17.48 to the word of the Lord. And the king appointed the lord 00:12:17.51\00:12:20.64 on whose hand he leaned to have charge of the gate: 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.67 and the people trode upon him in the gate, and he died, 00:12:23.70\00:12:27.08 as the man of God had said, who spake when the king came down 00:12:27.11\00:12:30.95 to him. And it came to pass as the man of God had spoken to 00:12:30.98\00:12:34.78 the king, saying, Two measures of barley for a shekel, 00:12:34.81\00:12:37.66 and a measure of fine flour for a shekel, shall be tomorrow 00:12:37.69\00:12:40.62 about this time in the gate of Samaria: And the Lord answered 00:12:40.65\00:12:45.20 the man of God, and said, Now behold, if the Lord should make 00:12:45.23\00:12:47.66 windows in heaven, might such a thing be? And he said, Behold, 00:12:47.69\00:12:49.96 thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof. 00:12:49.99\00:12:52.98 And so it fell out unto him: for the people trode upon him 00:12:53.01\00:12:57.12 in the gate, and he died.
