Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.46\00:00:18.63 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me again today. 00:00:18.67\00:00:22.08 We're reading one of my favorite stories in the bible, 00:00:22.12\00:00:24.31 but before we continue, let's pray together. 00:00:24.34\00:00:26.36 Dear God, thank you so much for your blessings. Thank you 00:00:26.39\00:00:31.09 for the blessings you give us that we are aware of, 00:00:31.12\00:00:33.77 and for the many blessings that we don't notice 00:00:33.80\00:00:36.57 the way we should. Please open our eyes and make us more 00:00:36.60\00:00:39.70 grateful, and then help us to find ways to pass your blessing 00:00:39.73\00:00:42.55 on to others. We love you so much and thank you for loving us 00:00:42.58\00:00:45.73 Please be with us now as we read. Amen. 00:00:45.76\00:00:48.61 The story that we're reading is found in 2nd Kings. 00:00:48.64\00:00:51.90 And it's the story of how the king of Israel and the king of 00:00:51.93\00:00:54.67 Edom, and king Jehoshaphat went out to make war with the king of 00:00:54.70\00:00:59.17 Moab and they got lost in the desert. And as they were 00:00:59.20\00:01:02.36 lost with all of their armies, and all of their animals, 00:01:02.39\00:01:04.58 they called for a prophet of the Lord and Elisha came and said to 00:01:04.61\00:01:09.10 them, Make this valley full of ditches and you won't see 00:01:09.13\00:01:13.36 wind and you won't see rain, but valley is going to flow with 00:01:13.39\00:01:16.39 water. You're not going to see any natural reason for it, but 00:01:16.42\00:01:19.59 God is going to provide a blessing for you and he says 00:01:19.62\00:01:21.86 this is a small thing for the Lord. Let's continue reading, 00:01:21.89\00:01:24.27 2nd Kings, chapter 3, and beginning with verse 18. 00:01:24.30\00:01:29.30 This is the King James Version. And this is but a light thing 00:01:29.33\00:01:33.69 in the sight of the Lord: he will deliver the Moabites 00:01:33.72\00:01:35.90 also into your hand. And ye shall smite every fenced city, 00:01:35.93\00:01:39.83 and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop 00:01:39.86\00:01:43.45 all wells of water, and mar every good piece of land 00:01:43.48\00:01:46.29 with stones. And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat 00:01:46.32\00:01:50.16 offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by 00:01:50.19\00:01:54.48 the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water. 00:01:54.51\00:01:58.06 And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come 00:01:58.09\00:02:01.21 up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to 00:02:01.24\00:02:04.02 put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border. 00:02:04.05\00:02:07.20 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone 00:02:07.23\00:02:11.30 upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water 00:02:11.33\00:02:14.16 on the other side as red as blood: And they said, 00:02:14.19\00:02:18.58 This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have 00:02:18.61\00:02:21.96 smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil. 00:02:21.99\00:02:24.84 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose 00:02:24.87\00:02:28.40 up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: 00:02:28.43\00:02:32.22 but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their 00:02:32.25\00:02:36.04 country. And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece 00:02:36.07\00:02:39.13 of land cast every man his stone and filled it; and they stopped 00:02:39.16\00:02:43.25 all the wells of water and felled all the good trees: 00:02:43.28\00:02:45.72 only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof, howbeit 00:02:45.75\00:02:50.47 the slingers went about it, and smote it. And when the king of 00:02:50.50\00:02:53.90 Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him 00:02:53.93\00:02:58.27 700 men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king 00:02:58.30\00:03:02.35 of Edom: but they could not. Then he took his eldest son 00:03:02.38\00:03:06.17 that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a 00:03:06.20\00:03:08.72 burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation 00:03:08.75\00:03:12.04 against Israel and they departed from him, and returned to their 00:03:12.07\00:03:16.19 own land. Continuing in 2nd Kings, 00:03:16.22\00:03:19.29 chapter 4, this is the King James Version. 00:03:19.32\00:03:21.64 Now their cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons 00:03:21.67\00:03:28.40 of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband 00:03:28.43\00:03:32.60 is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: 00:03:32.63\00:03:36.50 and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons 00:03:36.53\00:03:40.25 to be bondmen. And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do 00:03:40.28\00:03:44.96 for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? 00:03:44.99\00:03:47.62 And she said, Thine handmaid hath not anything in the house, 00:03:47.65\00:03:51.55 save a pot of oil. Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad 00:03:51.58\00:03:57.43 of all thy neighbors, even empty vessels; borrow not a few. 00:03:57.46\00:04:01.39 and when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee 00:04:01.42\00:04:05.72 and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, 00:04:05.75\00:04:09.79 and thou shalt set aside that which is full. So she went from 00:04:09.82\00:04:14.20 him and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought 00:04:14.23\00:04:17.43 the vessels to her; and she poured out. And it came to pass, 00:04:17.46\00:04:21.05 when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, 00:04:21.08\00:04:23.40 bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a 00:04:23.43\00:04:27.39 vessel more and the oil stayed. Then she came and told the man 00:04:27.42\00:04:32.23 of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, 00:04:32.26\00:04:34.88 and live thou and thy children of the rest. 00:04:34.91\00:04:38.74 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, 00:04:38.77\00:04:43.06 where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. 00:04:43.09\00:04:47.38 And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither 00:04:47.41\00:04:51.22 to eat bread. And she said unto her husband, Behold now, 00:04:51.25\00:04:56.23 I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us 00:04:56.26\00:05:00.75 continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, 00:05:00.78\00:05:04.23 on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, 00:05:04.26\00:05:08.28 and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh 00:05:08.31\00:05:12.51 to us, that he shall turn in thither. And it fell on a day, 00:05:12.54\00:05:16.83 that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, 00:05:16.86\00:05:19.11 and lay there. And he said to Gehazi his servant, 00:05:19.14\00:05:22.94 Call this Shunammite. And when he had called her, she stood 00:05:22.97\00:05:27.04 before him. And he said unto him, Say now unto her, 00:05:27.07\00:05:31.12 Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; 00:05:31.15\00:05:35.28 what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for 00:05:35.31\00:05:40.73 to the king, or to the captain of the host? 00:05:40.76\00:05:44.49 And she answered, I dwell among mine own people. And he said, 00:05:44.52\00:05:49.92 What then is to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, 00:05:49.95\00:05:53.30 Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old. And he said, 00:05:53.33\00:05:58.16 Call her. And when he had called her, 00:05:58.19\00:06:00.84 she stood in the door. And he said, About this season, 00:06:00.87\00:06:04.26 according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. 00:06:04.29\00:06:08.51 And she said, Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie 00:06:08.54\00:06:12.85 unto thine handmaid. And the woman conceived, and bare a son 00:06:12.88\00:06:17.48 at that season that Elisha had said unto her, according to the 00:06:17.51\00:06:20.78 time of life. And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, 00:06:20.81\00:06:25.04 that he went out to his father to the reapers. 00:06:25.07\00:06:27.10 And he said unto his father, My head, my head. And he said 00:06:27.13\00:06:32.79 to a lad, Carry him to his mother. And when he had taken 00:06:32.82\00:06:36.35 him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees 00:06:36.38\00:06:39.03 till noon, and then died. And she went up, and laid him 00:06:39.06\00:06:44.20 on the bed of the man of God, and shut the door upon him, 00:06:44.23\00:06:47.25 and went out. And she called unto her husband, and said, 00:06:47.28\00:06:50.09 Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the 00:06:50.12\00:06:52.63 asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again. 00:06:52.66\00:06:56.55 And he said, Wherefore wilt thou go to him today? 00:06:56.58\00:07:00.86 it is neither new moon, nor sabbath. And she said, 00:07:00.89\00:07:04.41 It shall be well. Then she saddled an ass, and said to 00:07:04.44\00:07:08.50 her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not thy riding 00:07:08.53\00:07:12.40 for me, except I bid thee. So she went and came unto the man 00:07:12.43\00:07:16.74 of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of 00:07:16.77\00:07:20.23 God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, 00:07:20.26\00:07:24.38 Behold, yonder is that Shunammite: Run now, 00:07:24.41\00:07:27.88 I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well 00:07:27.91\00:07:30.76 with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with 00:07:30.79\00:07:32.68 the child? And she answered, It is well. And when she came 00:07:32.71\00:07:37.48 to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: 00:07:37.51\00:07:41.89 but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God 00:07:41.92\00:07:45.23 said, Let her alone; for her soul is vexed within her: 00:07:45.26\00:07:48.42 and the Lord hath hid it from me, and hath not told me. 00:07:48.45\00:07:51.42 Then she said, Did I desire a son of my lord? did I not say, 00:07:51.45\00:07:57.45 Do not deceive me? Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins, 00:07:57.48\00:08:01.74 and take my staff in thine hand and go thy way: if thou meet 00:08:01.77\00:08:04.43 and man, salute him not; and if any salute thee, answer him not 00:08:04.46\00:08:08.15 again, and lay my staff upon the face of the child. 00:08:08.18\00:08:12.23 And the mother of the child said, As the Lord liveth, 00:08:12.26\00:08:16.08 and as thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, 00:08:16.11\00:08:20.98 and followed her. And Gehazi passed on before them, 00:08:21.02\00:08:24.59 and laid the staff upon the face of the child; 00:08:24.62\00:08:26.68 but there was neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went 00:08:26.71\00:08:30.65 again to meet him, and told him saying The child is not awakened 00:08:30.68\00:08:34.05 And when Elisha was come into the house, behold, the child was 00:08:34.08\00:08:38.12 dead, and laid upon his bed. He went in therefore, and shut 00:08:38.15\00:08:42.86 the door upon them twain, and prayed unto the Lord. 00:08:42.89\00:08:45.47 and he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth 00:08:45.50\00:08:49.08 upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands 00:08:49.11\00:08:52.90 upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; 00:08:52.93\00:08:55.52 and the flesh of the child waxed warm. Then he returned, 00:08:55.55\00:09:00.83 and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched 00:09:00.86\00:09:04.89 himself upon him: and the child sneezed 7 times, and the child 00:09:04.92\00:09:09.31 opened his eyes. And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this 00:09:09.34\00:09:13.34 Shunammite. So he called her. And when she was come in unto 00:09:13.37\00:09:17.34 him, he said, Take up they son. Then she went in, and fell at 00:09:17.37\00:09:22.26 his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, 00:09:22.29\00:09:26.08 and went out. And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a 00:09:26.11\00:09:31.56 dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting 00:09:31.59\00:09:34.68 before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, 00:09:34.71\00:09:39.16 and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets. And one went 00:09:39.19\00:09:43.26 out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, 00:09:43.29\00:09:46.17 and gathered therof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred 00:09:46.20\00:09:51.05 them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not. 00:09:51.08\00:09:53.77 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, 00:09:53.80\00:09:57.68 as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, 00:09:57.71\00:10:00.25 and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. 00:10:00.28\00:10:03.59 And they could not eat thereof. But he said, Then bring meal. 00:10:03.62\00:10:08.60 and he cast it into the pot and he said, Pour out for the people 00:10:08.63\00:10:12.72 so that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot. 00:10:12.75\00:10:15.81 And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought 00:10:15.84\00:10:20.94 the man of God bread of the firstfruits, 20 loaves of barley 00:10:20.97\00:10:25.08 and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, give 00:10:25.11\00:10:28.69 unto the people, that they may eat. And his servitor said, 00:10:28.72\00:10:33.86 What, should I set this before hundred men? He said again, 00:10:33.89\00:10:36.74 Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord, 00:10:36.77\00:10:40.54 They shall eat, and shall leave thereof. So he set it before 00:10:40.57\00:10:44.25 them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word 00:10:44.28\00:10:47.48 of the Lord. Continuing in 2nd Kings, 00:10:47.51\00:10:50.41 chapter 5. This is the King James Version. 00:10:50.44\00:10:52.82 Now Naaman, captain of the host of the king of Syria, 00:10:52.85\00:10:57.59 was a great man with his master and honorable, because by him 00:10:57.62\00:11:02.28 the Lord had given deliverance unto Syria: he was also a mighty 00:11:02.31\00:11:05.76 man in valor, but he was a leper. And the Syrians had gone 00:11:05.79\00:11:10.41 out by companies, and had brought away captive out of 00:11:10.44\00:11:13.49 the land of Israel a little maid and she waited on Naaman's wife. 00:11:13.52\00:11:17.26 And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the 00:11:17.29\00:11:22.20 prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his 00:11:22.23\00:11:25.26 leprosy. And one went in, and told his lord, saying, Thus and 00:11:25.29\00:11:29.51 thus said the maid that is of the land of Israel. 00:11:29.54\00:11:31.59 And the king of Syria said, Go to, go, and I will send a letter 00:11:31.62\00:11:36.29 unto the king of Israel. And he departed, and took with him 00:11:36.32\00:11:40.08 ten talents of silver, and 6,000 pieces of gold, 00:11:40.11\00:11:43.26 and 10 changes of raiment. And he brought the letter 00:11:43.29\00:11:46.87 to the king of Israel, saying, Now when this letter is come 00:11:46.90\00:11:49.86 unto thee, behold, I have therewith sent Naaman my servant 00:11:49.89\00:11:53.44 to thee, that thou mayest recover him of his leprosy. 00:11:53.47\00:11:56.43 And it came to pass, when the king of Israel had read the 00:11:56.46\00:11:59.69 letter, that he rent his clothes and said, Am I God, to kill 00:11:59.72\00:12:02.99 and to make alive, that this man doth send unto me to recover a 00:12:03.02\00:12:06.25 man of his leprosy? wherefore consider, I pray you, and see 00:12:06.28\00:12:09.60 how he seeketh a quarrel against me. And it was so, when Elisha 00:12:09.63\00:12:14.30 the man of God had heard that the king of Israel had rent his 00:12:14.33\00:12:17.24 clothes, that he sent to the king, saying, Wherefore hast 00:12:17.27\00:12:20.50 thou rent thy clothes? let him come now to me, and he shall 00:12:20.53\00:12:23.80 know that there is a prophet in Israel. So Naaman came with his 00:12:23.83\00:12:28.48 horses and with his chariot, and stood at the door of the house 00:12:28.51\00:12:31.56 of Elisha. And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, 00:12:31.59\00:12:35.27 Go and wash in Jordan 7 times, and thy flesh shall come again 00:12:35.30\00:12:40.39 to thee, and thou shalt be clean. But Naaman was wroth 00:12:40.42\00:12:45.23 and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come 00:12:45.26\00:12:49.25 out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the Lord his God, 00:12:49.28\00:12:52.12 and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper. 00:12:52.15\00:12:54.49 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than 00:12:54.52\00:12:57.87 all the waters of Israel? may I not wash in them, and be clean? 00:12:57.90\00:13:00.91 So he turned and went away in a rage. And his servants came near 00:13:00.94\00:13:06.27 and spake unto him, and said, My father, if the prophet had 00:13:06.30\00:13:10.30 bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? 00:13:10.33\00:13:14.14 how much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, 00:13:14.17\00:13:18.56 and be clean? Then went he down, and dipped himself seven times 00:13:18.59\00:13:23.83 in Jordan, according to the saying of the man of God: 00:13:23.86\00:13:26.03 and his flesh came again like unto the flesh of a little child 00:13:26.06\00:13:30.72 and he was clean. And he returned to the man of God, 00:13:30.75\00:13:34.62 he and all his company, and came and stood before him and he said 00:13:34.65\00:13:37.77 Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in 00:13:37.80\00:13:42.62 Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy 00:13:42.65\00:13:46.90 servant. But he said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand 00:13:46.93\00:13:52.83 I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; 00:13:52.86\00:13:56.32 but he refused. And Naaman said, Shall there not then, I pray 00:13:56.35\00:14:00.27 thee, be given to thy servant 2 mules' burden of earth? 00:14:00.30\00:14:02.98 for thy servant will henceforth offer neither 00:14:03.01\00:14:05.88 burnt offering nor sacrifice unto other gods, 00:14:05.91\00:14:08.75 but unto the Lord. In this thing the Lord pardon thy 00:14:08.78\00:14:12.30 servant, that when my master goeth into the house of Rimmon 00:14:12.33\00:14:14.99 to worship there, and he leaneth on my hand, and I bow myself 00:14:15.02\00:14:18.28 in the house of Rimmon: when I bow down myself in the house of 00:14:18.31\00:14:21.44 Rimmon, the Lord pardon thy servant in this thing. 00:14:21.47\00:14:24.35 And he said unto him, Go in peace. So he departed from him 00:14:24.38\00:14:29.96 a little way. Thank you for joining with me. 00:14:29.99\00:14:32.82 Please join me again next time. Goodbye. 00:14:32.85\00:14:35.01
