Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.74\00:00:18.51 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to continue reading 00:00:18.54\00:00:21.91 some stories from the reign of king Ahab and Queen Jezebel. 00:00:21.94\00:00:26.53 Before we begin, let's pray together. 00:00:26.56\00:00:28.38 Dear God please come now in a very special and close way 00:00:28.41\00:00:35.34 to give us a deeper understanding of what we 00:00:35.37\00:00:38.25 are reading. May we not just hear the word and pass over 00:00:38.28\00:00:42.20 those that may seem more difficult to comprehend, but 00:00:42.23\00:00:45.96 may the message that you have for each one of us 00:00:45.99\00:00:48.91 in these words go to our hearts and bear fruit to your glory. 00:00:48.94\00:00:52.47 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:52.50\00:00:55.91 When we were last together, we were reading about how Ahab 00:00:55.94\00:00:59.88 went to battle with Benhadad and defeated him; but then made 00:00:59.91\00:01:04.88 a covenant with him. And now a prophet of God has come to Ahab 00:01:04.91\00:01:08.32 with a message. And we are going to pick up reading 00:01:08.35\00:01:10.36 in 1st Kings, chapter 20, with verse 42, 00:01:10.39\00:01:14.20 and this is the King James Version. 00:01:14.23\00:01:15.80 And he said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Because thou hast 00:01:15.83\00:01:20.94 let go out of thy hand a man whom I appointed to utter 00:01:20.97\00:01:25.74 destruction, therefore thy life shall go for his life, and thy 00:01:25.77\00:01:29.90 people for his people. And the king of Israel went to his house 00:01:29.93\00:01:34.42 heavy and displeased, and came to Samaria. 00:01:34.45\00:01:38.19 Continuing in 1st Kings, chapter 21. 00:01:38.22\00:01:41.49 and this is the King James Version. 00:01:41.52\00:01:43.37 And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth 00:01:43.40\00:01:47.12 the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, 00:01:47.15\00:01:50.59 hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria. 00:01:50.62\00:01:54.03 And Ahab spake unto Naboth, saying, Give me thy vineyard, 00:01:54.06\00:01:58.95 that I may have it for a garden of herbs, because it is near 00:01:58.98\00:02:02.83 unto my house: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard 00:02:02.86\00:02:06.81 than it; or, if it seem good to thee, I will give thee the worth 00:02:06.84\00:02:11.11 of it in money. And Naboth said to Ahab, The Lord forbid it me, 00:02:11.14\00:02:16.57 that I should give the inheritance of my fathers 00:02:16.60\00:02:18.91 unto thee. And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased 00:02:18.94\00:02:24.14 because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite 00:02:24.17\00:02:26.94 had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee 00:02:26.97\00:02:30.29 the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon 00:02:30.32\00:02:33.85 his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread. 00:02:33.88\00:02:36.79 But Jezebel his wife came to him and said unto him, Why is thy 00:02:36.82\00:02:41.51 spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread? And he said unto her, 00:02:41.54\00:02:46.02 Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite and said unto him 00:02:46.05\00:02:50.27 Give me thy vineyard for money or else if it please thee I will 00:02:50.30\00:02:53.75 give thee another vineyard for it. And he answered, I will not 00:02:53.78\00:02:56.88 give thee my vineyard. And Jezebel his wife said unto him, 00:02:56.91\00:03:01.40 Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? 00:03:01.43\00:03:04.85 Arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: 00:03:04.88\00:03:07.95 I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite. 00:03:07.98\00:03:11.37 So she wrote letters in Ahab's name, and sealed them with his 00:03:11.40\00:03:16.67 seal and sent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles 00:03:16.70\00:03:21.05 that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth. And she wrote 00:03:21.08\00:03:24.49 in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high 00:03:24.52\00:03:28.68 among the people: and set two men, sons of Belial, before him, 00:03:28.71\00:03:33.38 to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme 00:03:33.41\00:03:37.49 God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, 00:03:37.52\00:03:41.08 that he may die. And the men of his city, even the elders and 00:03:41.11\00:03:45.94 the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, 00:03:45.97\00:03:48.69 did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written 00:03:48.72\00:03:52.52 in the letters which she had sent unto them, 00:03:52.55\00:03:54.71 They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. 00:03:54.74\00:03:58.88 And there came in two men, children of Belial, 00:03:58.91\00:04:02.56 and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, 00:04:02.59\00:04:06.78 even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, 00:04:06.81\00:04:09.50 Naboth did blaspheme God and the King. Then they carried him 00:04:09.53\00:04:13.94 forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, 00:04:13.97\00:04:16.88 that he died. Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, 00:04:16.91\00:04:21.35 Naboth is stoned, and is dead. And it came to pass, 00:04:21.38\00:04:24.92 when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, 00:04:24.95\00:04:28.05 that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise take possession of the vineyard 00:04:28.08\00:04:32.27 of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee 00:04:32.30\00:04:35.37 for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. 00:04:35.40\00:04:38.31 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, 00:04:38.34\00:04:42.72 that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth 00:04:42.75\00:04:46.05 the Jezreelite, to take possession of it. 00:04:46.08\00:04:48.10 And the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, 00:04:48.13\00:04:52.81 Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, which is 00:04:52.84\00:04:56.78 in Samaria: behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, 00:04:56.81\00:05:00.79 whither he is gone down to possess it. 00:05:00.82\00:05:02.95 And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, 00:05:02.98\00:05:06.33 Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? And thou shalt 00:05:06.36\00:05:11.39 speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the Lord, In the place 00:05:11.42\00:05:15.24 where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood 00:05:15.27\00:05:20.10 even thine. And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, 00:05:20.13\00:05:26.04 O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee; because thou 00:05:26.07\00:05:30.75 hast sold thyself to work evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:05:30.78\00:05:33.49 Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy 00:05:33.52\00:05:37.61 posterity, and will cut off from Ahab him that pisseth against 00:05:37.64\00:05:42.11 the wall, and him that is shut up and left in Israel, 00:05:42.14\00:05:44.78 And will make thine house like the house of Jeroboam the son of 00:05:44.81\00:05:49.29 Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah, 00:05:49.32\00:05:53.16 for the provocation wherewith thou has provoked me to anger, 00:05:53.19\00:05:56.83 and made Israel to sin. And of Jezebel also spake the Lord, 00:05:56.86\00:06:02.31 saying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel. 00:06:02.34\00:06:06.77 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs shall eat; 00:06:06.80\00:06:10.94 and him that dieth in the field shall the fowls of the air eat. 00:06:10.97\00:06:14.70 But there was none like unto Ahab, which did sell himself 00:06:14.73\00:06:19.41 to work wickedness in the sight of the Lord, whom Jezebel 00:06:19.44\00:06:22.98 his wife stirred up. And he did very abominably in following 00:06:23.01\00:06:26.90 idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, 00:06:26.93\00:06:29.73 whom the Lord cast out before the children of Israel. 00:06:29.76\00:06:32.68 And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent 00:06:32.71\00:06:37.55 his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, 00:06:37.58\00:06:40.97 and lay in sackcloth, and went softly. And the word of the Lord 00:06:41.00\00:06:45.41 came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying, Seest thou how Ahab 00:06:45.44\00:06:50.24 humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself 00:06:50.27\00:06:54.47 before me, I will not bring the evil in his days: 00:06:54.50\00:06:57.59 but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house. 00:06:57.62\00:07:02.04 We're continuing to read in 1st Kings, chapter 22. 00:07:02.07\00:07:06.53 This is the King James Version. 00:07:06.56\00:07:08.05 And they continued three years without war between Syria and 00:07:08.08\00:07:13.69 Israel. And it came to pass in the third year, that Jehoshaphat 00:07:13.72\00:07:17.95 the king of Judah came down to the king of Israel. 00:07:17.98\00:07:21.41 And the king of Israel said unto his servants, Know ye that 00:07:21.44\00:07:26.00 Ramoth in Gilead is ours, and we be still, and take it not 00:07:26.03\00:07:30.83 out of the hand of the king of Syria? And he said unto 00:07:30.86\00:07:34.82 Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramoth-gilead? 00:07:34.85\00:07:39.07 And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, I am as thou art 00:07:39.10\00:07:44.70 my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses. 00:07:44.73\00:07:49.14 And Jehoshaphat said unto the king of Israel, Inquire, I pray 00:07:49.17\00:07:54.05 thee, at the word of the Lord today. Then the king of Israel 00:07:54.08\00:07:58.35 gathered the prophets together, about 400 men, and said unto 00:07:58.38\00:08:02.65 them, Shall I go against Ramoth-gilead to battle, 00:08:02.68\00:08:06.24 or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for the Lord 00:08:06.27\00:08:10.73 shall deliver it into the hand of the king. And Jehoshaphat 00:08:10.76\00:08:15.66 said, Is there not here a prophet of the Lord besides, 00:08:15.69\00:08:20.05 that we might inquire of him? And the king of Israel said unto 00:08:20.08\00:08:24.30 Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, 00:08:24.33\00:08:29.10 by whom we may inquire of the Lord: but I hate him; 00:08:29.13\00:08:32.65 for he doth not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. 00:08:32.68\00:08:36.46 And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so. Then the king 00:08:36.49\00:08:42.43 of Israel called an officer, and said, Hasten hither Micaiah 00:08:42.46\00:08:46.04 the son of Imlah. And the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat 00:08:46.10\00:08:49.66 the king of Judah sat each on his throne, having put on their 00:08:49.69\00:08:53.61 robes, in a void place in the entrance of the gate of Samaria; 00:08:53.64\00:08:57.55 and all the prophets prophesied before them. And Zedekiah 00:08:57.58\00:09:01.79 the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he said, 00:09:01.82\00:09:05.23 Thus saith the Lord, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, 00:09:05.26\00:09:08.47 until thou have consumed them. And all the prophets prophesied 00:09:08.50\00:09:12.86 so, saying, Go up to Ramoth-gilead, and prosper: 00:09:12.89\00:09:16.61 for the Lord shall deliver it into the king's hand. 00:09:16.64\00:09:19.20 And the messenger that was gone to call Micaiah spake unto 00:09:19.23\00:09:24.36 him, saying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare 00:09:24.39\00:09:28.60 good unto the king with one mouth: let thy word, I pray 00:09:28.63\00:09:33.13 thee, be like the word of one of them, and speak that which is 00:09:33.16\00:09:36.73 good. And Micaiah said, As the Lord liveth, what the Lord saith 00:09:36.76\00:09:42.31 unto me, that will I speak. So he came to the king. 00:09:42.34\00:09:46.55 and the king said unto him, Micaiah, shall we go against 00:09:46.58\00:09:50.61 Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall we forbear? 00:09:50.64\00:09:52.79 And he answered him, Go, and prosper: for the Lord shall 00:09:52.82\00:09:57.88 deliver it into the hand of the king. And the king said unto him 00:09:57.91\00:10:02.33 How many times shall I adjure thee that thou tell me nothing 00:10:02.36\00:10:06.98 but that which is true in the name of the Lord? 00:10:07.01\00:10:09.11 And he said, I saw all Israel scattered upon the hills, 00:10:09.14\00:10:16.23 as sheep that have not a shepherd: and the Lord said, 00:10:16.26\00:10:20.07 These have no master: let them return every man to his house 00:10:20.10\00:10:24.52 in peace. And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, 00:10:24.55\00:10:29.02 Did I not tell thee that he would prophesy no good 00:10:29.05\00:10:31.42 concerning me, but evil? And he said, Hear thou therefore 00:10:31.45\00:10:35.85 the word of the Lord. I saw the Lord sitting on his throne, 00:10:35.88\00:10:39.09 and all the host of heaven standing by him on his right 00:10:39.12\00:10:42.39 hand and on his left. And the Lord said, Who shall persuade 00:10:42.42\00:10:46.29 Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead, 00:10:46.32\00:10:49.75 And one said on this manner, and another said on that manner. 00:10:49.78\00:10:54.09 And there came forth a spirit, and stood before the Lord, 00:10:54.12\00:10:56.54 and said, I will persuade him. And the Lord said unto him 00:10:56.57\00:11:00.97 Wherewith? And he said, I will go forth, and I will be a lying 00:11:01.00\00:11:06.45 spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, 00:11:06.48\00:11:10.52 Thou shalt persuade him, and prevail also: go forth, 00:11:10.55\00:11:14.90 and do so. Now therefore, behold, the Lord hath put 00:11:14.93\00:11:19.25 a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets, 00:11:19.28\00:11:22.77 and the Lord hath spoken evil concerning thee. But Zedekiah 00:11:22.80\00:11:27.84 the son of Chenaanah went near, and smote Micaiah on the cheek, 00:11:27.87\00:11:31.51 and said, Which way went the spirit of the Lord from me 00:11:31.54\00:11:34.59 to speak unto thee? And Micaiah said, Behold, 00:11:34.62\00:11:37.95 thou shalt see in that day, when thou shalt go into an inner 00:11:37.98\00:11:41.71 chamber to hide thyself. And the king of Israel said, 00:11:41.74\00:11:45.62 Take Micaiah, and carry him back to Amon the governor 00:11:45.65\00:11:48.72 of the city, and to Joash the king's son; and say, 00:11:48.75\00:11:52.03 Thus saith the king, Put this fellow in the prison, 00:11:52.06\00:11:55.13 and feed him with bread of affliction and with water of 00:11:55.16\00:11:57.44 affliction until I come in peace. And Micaiah said, If thou 00:11:57.47\00:12:02.31 return at all in peace, the Lord hath not spoken by me. 00:12:02.34\00:12:05.50 And he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you. 00:12:05.53\00:12:09.27 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah 00:12:09.30\00:12:13.69 went up to Ramoth-gilead. And the king of Israel said unto 00:12:13.72\00:12:18.31 Jehoshaphat, I will disguise myself, and enter into 00:12:18.34\00:12:21.76 the battle; but put thou on thy robes. And the king of Israel 00:12:21.79\00:12:26.96 disguised himself, and went into the battle. 00:12:26.99\00:12:30.05 But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains 00:12:30.08\00:12:34.06 that had rule over his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small 00:12:34.09\00:12:37.96 nor great, save only with the king of Israel. 00:12:37.99\00:12:40.47 And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw 00:12:40.50\00:12:44.61 Jehoshaphat, they said, Surely it is the king of Israel. 00:12:44.64\00:12:48.09 and they turned aside to fight against him: and Jehoshaphat 00:12:48.12\00:12:51.91 cried out. And it came to pass, when the captains 00:12:51.94\00:12:54.23 of the chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel, 00:12:54.26\00:12:57.78 that they turned back from pursuing him. 00:12:57.81\00:12:59.52 and a certain man drew a bow at a venture, and smote the king 00:12:59.55\00:13:04.27 of Israel between the joints of the harness: wherefore he said 00:13:04.30\00:13:07.73 unto the driver of his chariot, Turn thine hand, and carry 00:13:07.76\00:13:10.59 me out of the host; for I am wounded. 00:13:10.62\00:13:12.14 And the battle increased that day: and the king was stayed up 00:13:12.17\00:13:15.88 in his chariot, against the Syrians, and died at even: 00:13:15.91\00:13:19.40 and the blood ran out of the wound into the midst 00:13:19.43\00:13:23.10 of the chariot. And there went a proclamation throughout the host 00:13:23.13\00:13:27.02 about the going down of the sun, saying, Every man to his city, 00:13:27.05\00:13:30.39 and every man to his own country. So the king died, 00:13:30.42\00:13:33.67 and was brought to Samaria; and they buried the king 00:13:33.70\00:13:36.02 in Samaria. And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria; 00:13:36.05\00:13:40.55 and the dogs licked up his blood and they washed his armor; 00:13:40.58\00:13:43.40 according unto the word of the Lord which he spake. 00:13:43.43\00:13:46.02 Now the rest of the acts of Ahab, and all that he did, 00:13:46.05\00:13:50.28 and the ivory house which he made, and all the cities that 00:13:50.31\00:13:53.93 he built, are they not written in the book of the chronicles 00:13:53.96\00:13:56.74 of the kings of Israel? So Ahab slept with his fathers; 00:13:56.77\00:14:00.95 and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead. 00:14:00.98\00:14:04.73 And Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah 00:14:04.76\00:14:09.02 in the 4th year of Ahab king of Israel. Jehoshophat was thirty 00:14:09.05\00:14:13.55 and five years old when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty 00:14:13.58\00:14:16.06 and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah 00:14:16.09\00:14:19.98 the daughter of Shilhi. Thank you for joining with me 00:14:20.01\00:14:24.00 to read the story of Ahab, and Jezebel, and Elijah. 00:14:24.03\00:14:27.93 Until we're together again, may God keep us faithful and 00:14:27.96\00:14:31.39 serving Him all the days of our lives. Goodbye. 00:14:31.42\00:14:34.98
