Hello, and welcome to His Words are life. 00:00:17.11\00:00:18.85 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're reading the story of King 00:00:18.88\00:00:21.79 David's reign over Israel, in the book of 2nd Samuel. 00:00:21.82\00:00:24.70 Before we continue, let's pray together. 00:00:24.73\00:00:27.28 Dear God, please come and be with us now in these next few 00:00:27.31\00:00:33.47 minutes as we hear your very words. May they go deep into 00:00:33.53\00:00:37.28 our hearts and be to us, life and light and bear fruit to your 00:00:37.31\00:00:41.93 glory. We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:41.96\00:00:45.64 When we left off, the prophet Gad was to be sent to David 00:00:45.68\00:00:51.28 with a message from God. And we pick up now in 2nd Samuel, 00:00:51.31\00:00:54.66 chapter 24, verse 13, and this is the King James Version. 00:00:54.69\00:00:59.31 So Gad came to David and told him, and said unto him, 00:00:59.34\00:01:04.08 Shall 7 years of famine come unto thee in thy land? 00:01:04.11\00:01:08.60 or wilt thou flee 3 months before thine enemies, 00:01:08.63\00:01:13.54 while they pursue thee? or that there be 3 days' pestilence 00:01:13.57\00:01:18.70 in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return 00:01:18.73\00:01:23.29 to him that sent me. And David said unto Gad, I am in a great 00:01:23.32\00:01:28.48 strait: let us fall now into the hand of the Lord; 00:01:28.51\00:01:31.91 for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand 00:01:31.94\00:01:36.18 of man. So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel 00:01:36.21\00:01:40.35 from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died 00:01:40.38\00:01:43.79 of the people from Dan even to Beersheba 70,000 men. 00:01:43.82\00:01:48.19 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to 00:01:48.22\00:01:51.58 destroy it, the Lord repented him of the evil, and said to the 00:01:51.61\00:01:55.14 angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine 00:01:55.17\00:01:59.34 hand. And the angel of the Lord was by the threshingplace 00:01:59.37\00:02:03.12 of Araunah, the Jebusite. And David spake unto the Lord 00:02:03.16\00:02:07.80 when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo I have 00:02:07.83\00:02:11.21 sinned, and I have done wickedly but these sheep, what have 00:02:11.24\00:02:15.60 they done? let thine hand I pray thee, be against me, and against 00:02:15.63\00:02:19.61 my father's house. And Gad came that day to David, and said unto 00:02:19.64\00:02:24.32 him, Go up, rear and altar unto the Lord 00:02:24.35\00:02:27.75 in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite. And David, 00:02:27.78\00:02:33.29 according to the saying of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded. 00:02:33.32\00:02:37.17 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on 00:02:37.20\00:02:41.55 toward him: and Araunah went out and bowed himself before the 00:02:41.58\00:02:44.59 king on his face upon the ground and Araunah said, Wherefore 00:02:44.62\00:02:49.44 is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy 00:02:49.47\00:02:53.62 the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, 00:02:53.65\00:02:56.64 that the plague may be stayed from the people. And Araunah 00:02:56.67\00:03:00.53 said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what 00:03:00.56\00:03:04.12 seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice 00:03:04.15\00:03:08.39 and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen 00:03:08.42\00:03:10.99 for wood. All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto 00:03:11.02\00:03:16.17 the king. And Araunah said unto the king. The Lord thy God 00:03:16.20\00:03:20.22 accept thee. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will 00:03:20.25\00:03:25.43 surely buy it of thee at a price. neither will I offer 00:03:25.46\00:03:28.19 burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which dost cost me 00:03:28.22\00:03:31.81 nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen 00:03:31.84\00:03:35.38 for 50 shekels of silver. And David built there an altar 00:03:35.41\00:03:39.97 unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 00:03:40.00\00:03:43.11 So the Lord was entreated for the land, and the plague 00:03:43.14\00:03:47.13 was stayed from Israel. We're continuing now 00:03:47.16\00:03:50.98 with the first book of Kings, chapter 1, 00:03:51.01\00:03:53.91 and this is the King James Version. 00:03:53.94\00:03:55.22 Now king David was old and stricken in years; 00:03:55.25\00:03:59.91 and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat. 00:03:59.94\00:04:02.87 Wherefore his servants said unto him, Let there be sought 00:04:02.90\00:04:06.89 for my lord the king a young virgin: and let her stand before 00:04:06.92\00:04:10.70 the king and let her cherish him, and let her lie in thy 00:04:10.73\00:04:13.87 bosom, that my lord the king may get heat. So they sought 00:04:13.90\00:04:17.86 for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, 00:04:17.89\00:04:20.84 and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. 00:04:20.87\00:04:26.31 And the damsel was very fair, and cherished the king, and 00:04:26.34\00:04:29.45 ministered to him: but the king knew her not. Then Adonijah, 00:04:29.48\00:04:34.51 the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: 00:04:34.54\00:04:38.63 and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and 50 men 00:04:38.66\00:04:42.09 to run before him. And his father had not displeased him 00:04:42.12\00:04:46.06 at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also was a 00:04:46.09\00:04:49.12 very goodly man; and his mother bare him after Absalom. 00:04:49.15\00:04:52.38 And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar 00:04:52.41\00:04:57.13 the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him. 00:04:57.16\00:05:00.32 But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, 00:05:00.35\00:05:04.47 and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty 00:05:04.50\00:05:08.93 men which belonged to David, were not with Adonijah. 00:05:08.96\00:05:12.78 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone 00:05:12.81\00:05:18.18 of Zoheleth which is by Enrogel, and called all his brethren 00:05:18.21\00:05:22.35 the king's sons, and all the men of Judah the king's servants: 00:05:22.38\00:05:25.40 But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, 00:05:25.43\00:05:29.79 and Solomon his brother, he called not. Wherefore Nathan 00:05:29.82\00:05:34.40 spake unto Bathsheba the other of Solomon, saying, 00:05:34.43\00:05:37.83 Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith 00:05:37.86\00:05:41.06 doth reign, and David our Lord knoweth it not? 00:05:41.09\00:05:44.51 Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, 00:05:44.54\00:05:48.40 that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son 00:05:48.43\00:05:52.81 Solomon. Go and get thee in unto the king David, and say 00:05:52.84\00:05:56.79 unto him, Didst not thou, my Lord, O king, swear unto thine 00:05:56.82\00:06:00.81 handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign 00:06:00.84\00:06:05.05 after me and he shall sit upon my throne? 00:06:05.08\00:06:06.97 why then doth Adonija reign? 00:06:07.00\00:06:09.66 Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also 00:06:09.70\00:06:14.77 will come in after thee, and confirm thy words. 00:06:14.80\00:06:17.51 And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: 00:06:17.54\00:06:21.62 and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite 00:06:21.65\00:06:25.25 ministered unto the king. And Bathsheba bowed and did 00:06:25.28\00:06:29.08 obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou? 00:06:29.11\00:06:32.08 And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the Lord thy God 00:06:32.11\00:06:37.15 unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall 00:06:37.18\00:06:40.80 reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne. And now, behold, 00:06:40.83\00:06:45.02 Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest 00:06:45.05\00:06:50.12 it not: And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep 00:06:50.15\00:06:53.99 in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, 00:06:54.02\00:06:56.60 and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: 00:06:56.63\00:06:59.26 but Solomon thy servant hath he not called. And thou, my lord 00:06:59.29\00:07:04.15 O king, the eyes of all Israel are upon thee, that thou 00:07:04.18\00:07:08.54 shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord 00:07:08.57\00:07:11.91 the king after him. Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord 00:07:11.94\00:07:17.23 the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son 00:07:17.26\00:07:20.11 Solomon shall be counted offenders. 00:07:20.14\00:07:22.31 And lo, while she yet talked to the king, Nathan the prophet 00:07:22.34\00:07:26.02 also came in. And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan 00:07:26.05\00:07:30.24 the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, 00:07:30.27\00:07:33.35 he bowed himself before the king with his face 00:07:33.38\00:07:35.19 to the ground. And Nathan said, My lord, O king, 00:07:35.22\00:07:38.33 hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit 00:07:38.36\00:07:41.88 upon my throne? For he is gone down this day, and hath slain 00:07:41.91\00:07:46.31 oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all 00:07:46.34\00:07:50.54 the king's sons, and the captains of the host, 00:07:50.57\00:07:52.38 and Abiathar the priest; and behold, they eat and drink 00:07:52.41\00:07:55.53 before him, and say, God save king Adonijah. But me, even me 00:07:55.56\00:08:01.20 thy servant and Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, 00:08:01.23\00:08:05.81 and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called. Is this thing 00:08:05.84\00:08:10.60 done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed it 00:08:10.63\00:08:13.84 unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord 00:08:13.87\00:08:16.59 the king after him? Then king David answered and said, 00:08:16.62\00:08:20.60 Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king's presence, 00:08:20.63\00:08:23.73 and stood before the king. And the king sware, and said, 00:08:23.76\00:08:27.28 As the Lord liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all 00:08:27.31\00:08:30.81 distress, even as I sware unto thee by the Lord God of Israel, 00:08:30.84\00:08:34.91 saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, 00:08:34.94\00:08:38.38 and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I 00:08:38.41\00:08:42.89 certainly do this day. Then Bathsheba bowed with her face 00:08:42.92\00:08:48.22 to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, 00:08:48.25\00:08:50.40 Let my lord king David live for ever. And king David said, 00:08:50.43\00:08:55.23 Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah 00:08:55.26\00:08:58.22 the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king. 00:08:58.25\00:09:00.96 The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants 00:09:00.99\00:09:04.64 of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own 00:09:04.67\00:09:08.46 mule, and bring him down to Gihon: and let Zadok the priest 00:09:08.49\00:09:12.88 and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: 00:09:12.91\00:09:16.68 and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon. 00:09:16.71\00:09:21.00 Then he shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon 00:09:21.03\00:09:24.79 my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: 00:09:24.82\00:09:28.51 and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah 00:09:28.54\00:09:33.22 And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, 00:09:33.25\00:09:37.44 Amen: the Lord God of my lord the king say so too. 00:09:37.47\00:09:41.52 As the Lord hath been with my lord the king, even so be he 00:09:41.55\00:09:45.49 with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne 00:09:45.52\00:09:48.57 of my lord king David. So Zadok the priest, and Nathan 00:09:48.60\00:09:54.23 the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the 00:09:54.26\00:09:57.98 Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down, and caused Solomon 00:09:58.01\00:10:00.84 to ride upon king David's mule, and brought him to Gihon. 00:10:00.87\00:10:04.81 And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the 00:10:04.84\00:10:08.70 tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew 00:10:08.73\00:10:11.80 the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon. 00:10:11.83\00:10:16.44 And all the people came up after him, and the people piped 00:10:16.47\00:10:19.66 with pipes, and rejoiced with a great joy, so that the earth 00:10:19.69\00:10:22.67 rent with the sound of them. And Adonijah and all the guests 00:10:22.70\00:10:26.37 that were with him heard it as they had made an end of eating. 00:10:26.40\00:10:29.40 And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, 00:10:29.43\00:10:31.55 Wherefore is this noise of the city being in an uproar? 00:10:31.58\00:10:35.21 And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar 00:10:35.24\00:10:39.48 the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; 00:10:39.51\00:10:42.68 for thou art a valiant man, and briniest good tidings. 00:10:42.71\00:10:45.35 And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord 00:10:45.38\00:10:50.33 king David hath made Solomon king. And the king hath sent 00:10:50.36\00:10:55.17 with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah 00:10:55.20\00:10:58.79 the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, 00:10:58.82\00:11:02.48 and they have caused him to ride upon the king's mule: 00:11:02.51\00:11:04.74 And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him 00:11:04.77\00:11:08.76 king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, 00:11:08.79\00:11:12.09 so that the city rang again. This is the noise ye have heard. 00:11:12.12\00:11:15.81 And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom. 00:11:15.84\00:11:18.63 And moreover the king's servants came to bless 00:11:18.66\00:11:21.13 our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon 00:11:21.16\00:11:24.43 better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy 00:11:24.46\00:11:27.11 throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed. 00:11:27.14\00:11:29.86 And also thus said the king, Blessed be the Lord God of 00:11:29.89\00:11:33.60 Israel, which hath given one to sit on my throne this day, 00:11:33.63\00:11:36.34 mine eyes even seeing it. And all the guests that were with 00:11:36.37\00:11:41.71 Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way. 00:11:41.74\00:11:46.03 And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, 00:11:46.06\00:11:51.33 and caught hold on the horns of the altar. And it was told 00:11:51.36\00:11:55.82 Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: 00:11:55.85\00:11:59.58 for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, 00:11:59.61\00:12:02.56 Let king Solomon swear unto me today that he will not slay 00:12:02.59\00:12:05.96 his servant with the sword. And Solomon said, If he will shew 00:12:05.99\00:12:10.21 himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall 00:12:10.24\00:12:13.36 to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, 00:12:13.39\00:12:16.62 he shall die. So king Solomon sent, and they brought him 00:12:16.65\00:12:21.19 down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself 00:12:21.22\00:12:23.52 to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house 00:12:23.56\00:12:27.58 We'll continue in the book of 1st Kings, chapter 2, 00:12:27.62\00:12:32.00 This is the King James Version. 00:12:32.03\00:12:33.68 Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die: 00:12:33.72\00:12:37.93 and he charged Solomon his son, saying, I go the way of all the 00:12:37.96\00:12:41.71 earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man; 00:12:41.74\00:12:46.05 and keep the charge of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, 00:12:46.08\00:12:50.40 to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, 00:12:50.43\00:12:53.80 and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, 00:12:53.83\00:12:56.33 that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, 00:12:56.36\00:12:59.34 and whithersoever thou turnest thyself: that the Lord may 00:12:59.37\00:13:03.19 continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, 00:13:03.22\00:13:06.88 If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me 00:13:06.91\00:13:11.82 in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, 00:13:11.85\00:13:15.50 there shall not fail thee, said he, a man on the throne 00:13:15.53\00:13:20.28 of Israel. Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of 00:13:20.31\00:13:25.42 Zeruiah did to me, and what he did to the two captains of the 00:13:25.45\00:13:28.64 hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa 00:13:28.67\00:13:33.35 the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war 00:13:33.38\00:13:37.52 in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that was 00:13:37.55\00:13:41.16 about his loins, and in his shoes that were on his feet. 00:13:41.19\00:13:44.76 Do therefore according to thy wisdom and let not his hoar head 00:13:44.79\00:13:49.95 go down to the grave in peace. But shew kindness unto the sons 00:13:49.98\00:13:55.10 of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at 00:13:55.13\00:13:59.22 thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of 00:13:59.25\00:14:03.31 Absalom thy brother. And behold, thou hast with thee Shimei 00:14:03.34\00:14:07.14 the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with 00:14:07.17\00:14:10.98 a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: 00:14:11.01\00:14:14.04 but he came down to me at Jordan and I sware to him by the Lord, 00:14:14.07\00:14:16.88 saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword. 00:14:16.91\00:14:20.07 Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou art a wise 00:14:20.10\00:14:24.14 man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; 00:14:24.17\00:14:26.64 but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood. 00:14:26.67\00:14:30.57 So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city 00:14:30.60\00:14:34.36 of David. 00:14:34.39\00:14:35.36
