Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:17.42\00:00:19.09 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to be reading 00:00:19.12\00:00:21.64 together in the book of 2nd Samuel. 00:00:21.67\00:00:23.90 When we were last together we were reading the story 00:00:23.93\00:00:25.86 of Absalom trying to seize the throne from his father, 00:00:25.89\00:00:30.32 king David. And king David had fled the city. But still 00:00:30.35\00:00:34.00 in the city, there are two priests, Abiathar, and Zadok, 00:00:34.03\00:00:37.44 who are sympathetic to king David, and as David is on his 00:00:37.47\00:00:42.33 flight, he meets another friend of his, Hushai the Archite. 00:00:42.36\00:00:47.08 And David asks Hushai also to go back into the city and 00:00:47.11\00:00:51.25 ingratiate himself into Absalom's court to sort of be a 00:00:51.28\00:00:55.13 counterbalance to the council that Absalom is receiving from 00:00:55.16\00:00:59.47 Ahithophel. And so we're going to pick up that story, but 00:00:59.50\00:01:02.36 before we do, let's pray together. 00:01:02.39\00:01:03.60 Dear God, please be with us in these next few minutes as we 00:01:03.63\00:01:07.73 read the story of your servant king David. And we long to have 00:01:07.76\00:01:11.89 you say of each of us what you said after, about him being 00:01:11.92\00:01:16.18 a man after your own heart. We long to be men and women 00:01:16.21\00:01:18.35 after your own heart. Please put your words into our hearts 00:01:18.38\00:01:21.07 that we may please you. We love you so much, and thank you for 00:01:21.10\00:01:24.21 loving us. Amen. We're picking up in 2nd Samuel, 00:01:24.24\00:01:28.15 chapter 17, verse 15. This is the King James Version. 00:01:28.18\00:01:31.63 Then said Hushai unto Zadok and to Abiathar, the priests. 00:01:31.66\00:01:37.17 Thus and thus did Ahithophel counsel Absalom and the elders 00:01:37.20\00:01:40.37 of Israel; and thus and thus have I counseled. 00:01:40.40\00:01:43.54 Now therefore send quickly and tell David, saying, Lodge not 00:01:43.57\00:01:47.81 this night in the plains of the wilderness, but speedily pass 00:01:47.84\00:01:51.23 over; lest the king be swallowed up, and all the people that are 00:01:51.26\00:01:54.39 with him. Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz stayed by Enrogel; 00:01:54.42\00:01:59.29 for they might not be seen to come into the city: 00:01:59.32\00:02:01.71 and a wench went and told them; and they went and told 00:02:01.74\00:02:04.59 king David. Nevertheless a lad saw them and told Absalom: 00:02:04.62\00:02:08.54 but they went both of them away quickly, and came to a man's 00:02:08.57\00:02:12.52 house in Bahurim, which had a well in his court: whither 00:02:12.55\00:02:15.93 they went down. And the woman took and spread a covering over 00:02:15.96\00:02:19.43 the well's mouth, and spread ground corn thereon; 00:02:19.46\00:02:22.28 and the thing was not known. And when Absalom's servants came 00:02:22.31\00:02:26.82 to the woman to the house, they said, Where is Ahimaaz 00:02:26.85\00:02:30.52 and Jonathan? And the woman said unto them, they be gone 00:02:30.55\00:02:34.47 over the brook of water. And when they had sought and could 00:02:34.50\00:02:37.56 not find them, they returned to Jerusalem. And it came to pass, 00:02:37.59\00:02:41.69 after they were departed, that they came up out of the well, 00:02:41.72\00:02:44.20 and went and told king David, and said unto David, Arise, 00:02:44.23\00:02:48.18 and pass quickly over the water: for thus hath Ahithophel 00:02:48.21\00:02:51.36 counseled against you. Then David arose, and all the people 00:02:51.39\00:02:55.51 that were with him, and they passed over Jordan: 00:02:55.54\00:02:57.37 by the morning light there lacked not one of them that was 00:02:57.40\00:03:00.47 not gone over Jordan. And when Ahithophel saw that his counsel 00:03:00.50\00:03:04.35 was not followed, he saddled his ass, and arose, and gat him 00:03:04.38\00:03:08.81 home to his house, to his city, and put his household in order, 00:03:08.84\00:03:12.90 and hanged himself, and died, and was buried in the sepulchre 00:03:12.93\00:03:17.83 of his father. Then David came to Mahanaim. And Absalom passed 00:03:17.86\00:03:23.53 over Jordan, he and all the men of Israel with him. And Absalom 00:03:23.56\00:03:27.99 made Amasa captain of the host instead of Joab: which Amasa 00:03:28.02\00:03:32.27 was a man's son, whose name was Ithra an Israelite, that went in 00:03:32.30\00:03:37.40 to Abigail, the daughter of Nahash, sister to Zeruiah 00:03:37.43\00:03:40.72 Joab's, mother. So Israel and Absalom pitched in the land of 00:03:40.75\00:03:44.72 Gilead. And it came to pass, when David was come to Mahanaim, 00:03:44.75\00:03:49.69 that Shobi the son of Nahash of Rabbah of the children of Ammon, 00:03:49.72\00:03:53.38 and Machir the son of Ammiel of Lodebar, and Barzillai 00:03:53.41\00:03:58.72 the Gileadite of Rogelim, brought beds, and basins, and 00:03:58.75\00:04:04.23 earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched 00:04:04.26\00:04:07.29 corn, and beans, and lentils, and parched pulse, and honey, 00:04:07.32\00:04:11.49 and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, 00:04:11.52\00:04:15.45 and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, 00:04:15.48\00:04:19.31 The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness. 00:04:19.34\00:04:23.39 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 18, 00:04:23.42\00:04:27.33 and this is the King James Version. 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.07 And David numbered the people that were with him, and set 00:04:29.10\00:04:33.08 captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them. 00:04:33.11\00:04:36.14 And David sent forth a 3rd part of the people under the hand of 00:04:36.17\00:04:40.26 Joab, and a 3rd part under the hand of Abiahai the son of 00:04:40.29\00:04:43.74 Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a 3rd part under the hand of Ittai 00:04:43.77\00:04:48.71 the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely 00:04:48.74\00:04:52.44 go forth with you myself also. But the people answered, 00:04:52.47\00:04:56.58 Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care 00:04:56.61\00:04:59.73 for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: 00:04:59.76\00:05:02.97 but now, thou art worth 10,000 of us therefore now it is better 00:05:03.00\00:05:09.28 that thou succour us out of the city. And the king said unto 00:05:09.31\00:05:13.75 them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by 00:05:13.78\00:05:18.75 the gate side and all the people came out by hundreds and by 00:05:18.78\00:05:22.94 thousands. And the king commanded Joab and Abishai 00:05:22.97\00:05:26.90 and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, 00:05:26.93\00:05:31.74 even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave 00:05:31.77\00:05:36.19 all the captains charge concerning Absalom. 00:05:36.22\00:05:38.48 So the people went out into the field against Israel: 00:05:38.51\00:05:42.13 and the battle was in the wood of Ephraim; where the people 00:05:42.16\00:05:45.29 of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was 00:05:45.32\00:05:48.61 there a great slaughter that day of 20,000 men. For the battle 00:05:48.64\00:05:52.76 was there scattered over the face of all the country: 00:05:52.79\00:05:55.18 and the wood devoured more people that day than the sword 00:05:55.21\00:05:57.50 devoured. And Absalom met the servants of David. And Absalom 00:05:57.53\00:06:02.19 rode upon a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a 00:06:02.22\00:06:06.12 great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was 00:06:06.15\00:06:10.04 taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule 00:06:10.07\00:06:13.25 that was under him went away. And a certain man saw it, 00:06:13.28\00:06:17.66 and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanged in an oak. 00:06:17.69\00:06:22.51 And Joab said unto the man that told him, And behold, 00:06:22.54\00:06:26.82 thou sawest him, and why didst thou not smite him there to the 00:06:26.85\00:06:29.76 ground? And I would have given thee ten shekels of silver and a 00:06:29.79\00:06:32.64 girdle. And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a 00:06:32.67\00:06:36.77 thousand shekels of silver in mine hand, yet would I not 00:06:36.80\00:06:40.36 put forth mine hand against the king's son: for in our hearing 00:06:40.39\00:06:44.43 the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, 00:06:44.46\00:06:48.87 Beware that none touch the young man Absalom. Otherwise I should 00:06:48.90\00:06:54.78 have wrought falsehood against mine own life: for there is no 00:06:54.81\00:06:58.07 matter hid from the king, and thou thyself would have set my 00:06:58.10\00:07:01.87 thyself against me. Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with 00:07:01.90\00:07:07.49 thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them 00:07:07.52\00:07:11.99 through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the 00:07:12.02\00:07:15.87 midst of the oak. And ten young men that bare Joab's armour 00:07:15.90\00:07:19.83 compassed about and smote Absalom and slew him. 00:07:19.86\00:07:23.17 And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from 00:07:23.20\00:07:26.27 pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people. 00:07:26.30\00:07:28.81 And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the 00:07:28.84\00:07:32.96 wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: 00:07:32.99\00:07:36.27 and all Israel fled every one to his tent. 00:07:36.30\00:07:40.07 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up 00:07:40.10\00:07:44.55 for himself a pillar, which is in the king's dale: 00:07:44.58\00:07:47.68 for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: 00:07:47.71\00:07:51.99 and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called 00:07:52.02\00:07:56.14 unto this day, Absalom's place. Then said Ahimaaz the son of 00:07:56.17\00:08:02.88 Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the 00:08:02.91\00:08:06.49 Lord hath avenged him of his enemies. And Joab said unto him, 00:08:06.52\00:08:10.64 Thou shalt not bear tidings this day, but thou shalt bear 00:08:10.67\00:08:13.96 tidings another day: But this day thou shalt bear no tidings, 00:08:13.99\00:08:17.71 because the king's son is dead. Then said Joab to Cushi, 00:08:17.74\00:08:22.64 Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And Cushi bowed himself 00:08:22.67\00:08:27.74 unto Joab, and ran. Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet 00:08:27.77\00:08:33.43 again to Joab, But howsoever let me, I pray thee, also run after 00:08:33.46\00:08:37.37 Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing 00:08:37.40\00:08:42.05 that thou hast no tidings ready? But howsoever, said he, 00:08:42.08\00:08:46.08 let me run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran 00:08:46.11\00:08:51.35 by the way of the of the plain, and overran Cushi. 00:08:51.38\00:08:54.38 And David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up 00:08:54.41\00:08:58.51 to the roof over the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes 00:08:58.54\00:09:01.44 and looked, and behold a man running alone. And the watchman 00:09:01.47\00:09:06.15 cried and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, 00:09:06.18\00:09:09.75 there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, 00:09:09.78\00:09:12.98 and drew near. And the watchman saw another man running: 00:09:13.01\00:09:17.58 and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold another 00:09:17.61\00:09:21.53 man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings. 00:09:21.56\00:09:25.41 And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the 00:09:25.44\00:09:29.65 foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. 00:09:29.68\00:09:33.33 And the king said, He is a good man and cometh with good tidings 00:09:33.36\00:09:37.35 And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. 00:09:37.38\00:09:42.11 And he fell down to the earth upon his face before the king, 00:09:42.14\00:09:45.24 and said, Blessed be the Lord thy God, which hath delivered up 00:09:45.27\00:09:47.91 the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king. 00:09:47.94\00:09:50.79 And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? 00:09:50.82\00:09:55.19 And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king's servant, 00:09:55.22\00:09:59.60 and me, thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not 00:09:59.63\00:10:03.47 what it was. And the king said unto him, Turn aside, and stand 00:10:03.50\00:10:07.09 here. And he turned aside, and stood still. And, behold Cushi 00:10:07.12\00:10:12.00 came; and Cushi said, Tidings, my lord the king: for the Lord 00:10:12.03\00:10:14.56 hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against 00:10:14.59\00:10:18.24 thee. And the king said unto Cushi, Is the young man Absalom 00:10:18.27\00:10:22.54 safe? And Cushi answered, The enemies of my lord the king, 00:10:22.57\00:10:26.94 and all that rise against thee to do thee hurt, be as that 00:10:26.97\00:10:31.13 young man is. And the king was much moved, and went up to the 00:10:31.16\00:10:35.43 chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went thus he said, 00:10:35.46\00:10:40.17 O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died 00:10:40.20\00:10:47.24 for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son. 00:10:47.27\00:10:51.29 We'll continue with 2nd Samuel, chapter 19, 00:10:51.33\00:10:54.88 and this is the King James Version. 00:10:54.91\00:10:56.14 And it was told Joab, Behold, the king weepeth and mourneth 00:10:56.17\00:11:02.04 for Absalom. And the victory that day was turned into 00:11:02.07\00:11:05.45 mourning unto all the people: for the people heard say 00:11:05.48\00:11:09.03 that day how the king was grieved for his son. 00:11:09.06\00:11:11.89 And the people gat them by stealth that day into the city, 00:11:11.92\00:11:15.65 as people being ashamed steal away when they flee in battle. 00:11:15.68\00:11:19.56 But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud 00:11:19.59\00:11:23.52 voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son! 00:11:23.55\00:11:27.76 And Joab came into the house to the king, and said, Thou hast 00:11:27.79\00:11:33.58 shamed this day the faces of all thy servants, which this day 00:11:33.61\00:11:36.93 have saved thy life, and the lives of thy sons and of thy 00:11:36.96\00:11:39.73 daughters, and the lives of thy wives, and the lives of thy 00:11:39.76\00:11:42.21 concubines; in that thou lovest thine enemies, and hatest thy 00:11:42.24\00:11:46.28 friends. For thou hast declared this day, that thou regardest 00:11:46.31\00:11:48.89 neither princes nor servants: for this day I perceive, that if 00:11:48.92\00:11:52.77 Absalom had lived, and all we had died this day, 00:11:52.80\00:11:55.81 then it had pleased thee well. Now therefore arise, go forth, 00:11:55.84\00:12:00.33 and speak comfortably unto thy servants for I swear by the lord 00:12:00.36\00:12:04.29 if thou go not forth, there will not tarry one with thee 00:12:04.32\00:12:07.13 this night and that will be worse unto thee than all the 00:12:07.16\00:12:10.35 evil that befell thee from thy youth until now. Then the king 00:12:10.38\00:12:14.91 arose, and sat in the gate. And they told unto all the people, 00:12:14.94\00:12:17.73 saying Behold, the king doth sit in the gate. And all the people 00:12:17.76\00:12:20.85 came before the king: for Israel had fled every man to his tent. 00:12:20.88\00:12:24.35 And all the people were at strife throughout all the tribes 00:12:24.38\00:12:27.54 of Israel, saying, The king saved us out of the hand of our 00:12:27.57\00:12:30.88 enemies, and he delivered us out of the hand of the Philistines; 00:12:30.91\00:12:33.65 and now he is fled out of the land for Absalom. And Absalom, 00:12:33.68\00:12:38.95 whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore 00:12:38.98\00:12:43.98 why speak ye not a word of bringing the king back? 00:12:44.01\00:12:46.36 And king David sent to Zadok and to Abiathar the priests, saying, 00:12:46.39\00:12:51.12 Speak unto the elders of Judah, saying, Why are ye the last to 00:12:51.15\00:12:55.51 bring the king back to his house seeing the speech of all Israel 00:12:55.54\00:12:58.97 is come to the king, even to his house. Ye are my brethren, 00:12:59.00\00:13:02.69 ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last 00:13:02.72\00:13:06.18 to bring back the king? And say ye to Amasa, Art thou not of my 00:13:06.21\00:13:11.25 bone, and of my flesh? God do to me, and more also, if thou be 00:13:11.28\00:13:15.41 not a captain of the host before me continually in the room of 00:13:15.44\00:13:18.76 Joab. And he bowed the heart of all the men of Judah, 00:13:18.79\00:13:22.39 even as the heart of one man; so that they sent this word unto 00:13:22.42\00:13:25.96 the king, Return thou, and all thy servants. So the king 00:13:25.99\00:13:31.60 returned, and came to Jordan. And Judah came to Gilgal, to go 00:13:31.63\00:13:35.75 to meet the king, to conduct the king over Jordan. And Shimei the 00:13:35.78\00:13:40.48 son of Gera, a Benjamite, which was of Bahurim, hasted and came 00:13:40.51\00:13:45.18 down with the men of Judah to meet king David. 00:13:45.21\00:13:47.41 And there were a thousand men of Benjamin with him, and Ziba the 00:13:47.44\00:13:50.85 servant of the house of Saul, and his 15 sons and his 20 00:13:50.88\00:13:54.32 servants with him; and they went over Jordan before the king. 00:13:54.35\00:13:57.53 And there went over a ferry boat to carry over the king's 00:13:57.56\00:14:01.16 household, and to do what he thought good. And Shimei 00:14:01.19\00:14:04.39 the son of Gera fell down before the king, as he was come over 00:14:04.42\00:14:08.13 Jordan; and said unto the king, Let not my lord impute iniquity 00:14:08.16\00:14:12.58 unto me, neither do thou remember that which thy servant 00:14:12.61\00:14:16.33 did perversely the day that my lord the king went out of 00:14:16.36\00:14:19.35 Jerusalem, that the king should take it to his heart. 00:14:19.38\00:14:22.27 for thy servant doth know that I have sinned: therefore, behold 00:14:22.30\00:14:26.16 I am come the first this day of all the house of Joseph 00:14:26.19\00:14:29.44 to go down to meet my lord the king. 00:14:29.47\00:14:32.59 Thank you and God bless until next time. 00:14:32.62\00:14:35.00
