Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.85\00:00:18.98 Today we're reading together in the book of 2nd Samuel, 00:00:19.01\00:00:22.18 but before we start, let's pray. 00:00:22.21\00:00:24.77 Our Father in heaven, we ask that you would please send 00:00:24.80\00:00:28.80 the Holy Spirit to guide our hearts and our thoughts 00:00:29.26\00:00:32.86 as we read these words that you have given to us, to be life and 00:00:32.89\00:00:36.87 light to our soul. Help us to not just hear them but to take 00:00:36.90\00:00:42.76 them into our hearts and to live by them to your glory. 00:00:42.79\00:00:46.29 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:46.32\00:00:49.59 When we were last together we were reading in 2nd Samuel, 00:00:49.62\00:00:53.25 chapter 15, and it was giving the account of Absalom, how 00:00:53.28\00:00:58.10 he would go and sit at the gate of the city and if someone came 00:00:58.13\00:01:01.57 seeking help from the king, regarding a controversy, 00:01:01.60\00:01:05.60 Absalom would ask where he was from and if the servant 00:01:06.25\00:01:10.76 answered, I'm from one of the tribes of Israel, 00:01:10.79\00:01:12.73 Absalom had a response for him. And we're going to pick up 00:01:12.76\00:01:15.72 with Absalom's response. This is in 2nd Samuel, chapter 15, 00:01:15.75\00:01:19.38 verse 3. And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good 00:01:19.41\00:01:25.89 and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee 00:01:26.00\00:01:30.39 Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, 00:01:30.42\00:01:35.88 that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me 00:01:35.94\00:01:39.63 and I would do him justice! And it was so, that when any man 00:01:39.66\00:01:45.09 came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand 00:01:45.13\00:01:49.02 and took him, and kissed him. And on this manner did Absalom 00:01:49.19\00:01:53.19 to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom 00:01:53.48\00:01:57.48 stole the hearts of the men of Israel. And it came to pass 00:01:57.85\00:02:01.85 after 40 years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, 00:02:02.19\00:02:06.94 let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the Lord, 00:02:07.09\00:02:10.25 in Hebron. For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur 00:02:10.28\00:02:15.05 in Syria, saying, If the Lord shall bring me again indeed to 00:02:15.09\00:02:18.90 Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord. And the king said unto him 00:02:18.93\00:02:22.93 Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron. But Absalom 00:02:23.31\00:02:29.44 sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, 00:02:29.48\00:02:32.51 As soon as ye hear the sound of a trumpet, then ye shall say, 00:02:32.54\00:02:35.92 Absalom reigneth in Hebron. And with Absalom went 200 men 00:02:35.95\00:02:41.84 out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their 00:02:41.88\00:02:45.21 simplicity, and they knew not any thing. And Absalom sent for 00:02:45.24\00:02:50.08 Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counselor, from his city, even 00:02:50.17\00:02:55.55 from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy 00:02:55.59\00:02:59.52 was strong; for the people increased continually 00:02:59.55\00:03:03.10 with Absalom. And there came a messenger to David, saying, 00:03:03.13\00:03:07.13 The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. 00:03:07.38\00:03:09.85 And David said unto all his servants that were with him 00:03:09.88\00:03:13.96 at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else 00:03:13.99\00:03:17.65 escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us 00:03:17.68\00:03:21.07 suddenly, and bring evil upon us and smite the city with the edge 00:03:21.10\00:03:24.34 of the sword. And the king's servants said unto the king, 00:03:24.37\00:03:28.28 Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord 00:03:28.31\00:03:32.02 the king shall appoint. And the king went forth, 00:03:32.05\00:03:35.28 and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, 00:03:35.31\00:03:39.31 which were concubines, to keep the house. And the king went 00:03:39.40\00:03:43.40 forth, and all the people after him and tarried in a place that 00:03:43.55\00:03:47.26 was far off and all his servants passed on beside him; 00:03:47.29\00:03:51.11 and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the 00:03:51.14\00:03:54.64 Gittites, 600 men which came after him from Gath, passed on 00:03:54.67\00:03:58.65 before the king. Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, 00:03:59.22\00:04:03.65 Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, 00:04:03.76\00:04:07.76 and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, 00:04:07.90\00:04:10.39 and also an exile. Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I 00:04:10.42\00:04:14.33 this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go 00:04:14.36\00:04:17.39 whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: 00:04:17.42\00:04:20.87 mercy and truth be with thee. And Ittai answered the king, 00:04:20.90\00:04:25.70 and said, As the Lord liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, 00:04:25.73\00:04:29.08 surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death, 00:04:29.11\00:04:33.11 or life, even there also will thy servant be. And David said 00:04:33.18\00:04:38.94 to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, 00:04:38.98\00:04:43.46 and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him. 00:04:43.49\00:04:45.98 And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people 00:04:46.01\00:04:50.48 passed over. The king also himself passed over the brook 00:04:50.51\00:04:54.38 Kidron, and all the people passed over toward the way 00:04:54.41\00:04:56.72 of the wilderness. And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites 00:04:56.75\00:05:01.55 were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; 00:05:01.58\00:05:04.65 and they sat down the ark of God and Abiathar went up, until all 00:05:04.68\00:05:09.69 the people had done passing out of the city. And the king said 00:05:09.72\00:05:13.67 unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: 00:05:13.95\00:05:16.72 if I shall find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He will bring 00:05:16.75\00:05:19.65 me again and shew me both it, and his habitation: 00:05:19.68\00:05:23.14 But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, 00:05:23.17\00:05:27.17 here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him. 00:05:27.51\00:05:32.30 And the king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou 00:05:32.33\00:05:37.06 a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your 2 sons with you, 00:05:37.16\00:05:41.16 Ahimaaz, thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. 00:05:41.26\00:05:45.26 See, I till tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there 00:05:45.41\00:05:48.48 come word from you to certify me. Zadok therefore and Abiathar 00:05:48.51\00:05:53.90 carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried 00:05:54.00\00:05:56.56 there. And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept 00:05:56.59\00:06:01.86 as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: 00:06:01.89\00:06:05.51 and all the people that was with him covered every man his 00:06:05.54\00:06:09.29 head and they went up, weeping as they went. 00:06:09.32\00:06:12.02 And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the 00:06:12.05\00:06:15.94 conspirators with Absalom, and David said, O Lord, I pray thee, 00:06:15.97\00:06:19.94 turn the counsel of Ahithophel unto foolishness. 00:06:20.23\00:06:24.23 And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the 00:06:24.81\00:06:28.63 mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came 00:06:28.66\00:06:34.27 to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head: 00:06:34.30\00:06:37.20 Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then shalt 00:06:37.23\00:06:40.77 be a burden unto me: but if thou return to the city, and say unto 00:06:40.80\00:06:44.77 Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy 00:06:45.21\00:06:48.82 father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: 00:06:48.85\00:06:52.83 then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. 00:06:52.98\00:06:58.15 And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abitathar 00:06:58.18\00:07:03.11 the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever 00:07:03.14\00:07:07.01 thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it 00:07:07.04\00:07:10.11 to Zadok, and Abiathar the priests. Behold, they have 00:07:10.14\00:07:14.56 there with them their 2 sons. Ahimaaz Zadok's son, 00:07:14.59\00:07:18.41 and Jonathan, Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send 00:07:18.85\00:07:22.46 unto me every thing that ye can hear. So Hushai David's 00:07:22.49\00:07:26.46 friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem. 00:07:26.83\00:07:30.66 We're continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 16, 00:07:30.69\00:07:34.31 This is the King James Version. And when David was a little past 00:07:34.34\00:07:39.12 the top of the hill, behold Ziba the servant of Mephibosheth 00:07:39.15\00:07:43.02 met him, with a couple of asses saddled and upon them 200 loaves 00:07:43.15\00:07:47.61 of bread, and an hundred bunches of raisins, and an hundred of 00:07:47.80\00:07:51.22 summer fruits, and a bottle of wine. And the king said unto 00:07:51.25\00:07:54.89 Ziba, What meanest thou by these? And Ziba said, The asses 00:07:54.92\00:07:59.80 be for the king's household to ride on; and the bread and 00:07:59.84\00:08:02.89 summer fruit for the young men to eat; and the wine, that such 00:08:02.92\00:08:06.82 as be faint in the wilderness may drink. And the king said, 00:08:06.85\00:08:10.82 And where is thy master's son? And Ziba said unto the king, 00:08:11.22\00:08:15.12 Behold, he abideth at Jerusalem: for he said, Today shall the 00:08:15.15\00:08:18.45 house of Israel restore me the kingdom of my father. 00:08:18.48\00:08:21.56 Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that 00:08:21.59\00:08:26.99 pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech 00:08:27.03\00:08:30.93 thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king. 00:08:31.04\00:08:34.66 And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, thence came out 00:08:34.69\00:08:40.29 a man of the family of the house of Saul, 00:08:40.33\00:08:42.63 whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, 00:08:42.66\00:08:46.64 and cursed still as he came. And he cast stones at David, 00:08:46.88\00:08:52.41 and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and 00:08:52.44\00:08:56.27 all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. 00:08:56.30\00:08:59.66 And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, 00:08:59.69\00:09:03.63 thou bloody man, and thou man of Belial; 00:09:03.66\00:09:06.43 The Lord hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house 00:09:06.46\00:09:09.56 of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the Lord 00:09:09.59\00:09:13.00 hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: 00:09:13.03\00:09:15.57 and, behold, thou art taken in thy mischief, because thou art 00:09:15.60\00:09:19.06 a bloody man. Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king 00:09:19.10\00:09:25.37 Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over 00:09:25.40\00:09:30.70 I pray thee, and take off his head. And the king said, 00:09:30.73\00:09:34.58 What have I do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? 00:09:34.66\00:09:37.84 so let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, 00:09:37.87\00:09:41.42 Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so? 00:09:41.45\00:09:45.42 And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, 00:09:45.53\00:09:49.46 my son which came forth of my bowels, seeketh my life: 00:09:49.49\00:09:52.90 how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, 00:09:52.93\00:09:56.91 and let him curse; for the Lord hath bidden him. It may be 00:09:57.18\00:10:01.18 that the Lord will look on mine affliction, and that the Lord 00:10:01.81\00:10:05.05 will requite me good for his cursing this day. 00:10:05.08\00:10:07.98 And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on 00:10:08.01\00:10:13.18 the hill's side over against him and cursed as he went, 00:10:13.21\00:10:16.28 and threw stones at him, and cast dust. And the king, and all 00:10:16.31\00:10:21.06 the people that were with him, came weary, and refreshed 00:10:21.09\00:10:23.64 themselves there. And Absalom, and all the people the men of 00:10:23.67\00:10:27.64 Israel, came to Jerusalem, and Ahithophel with him. 00:10:27.78\00:10:31.23 And it came to pass, when Hushai the Archite, David's friend, 00:10:31.26\00:10:35.23 was come unto Absalom, that Hushai said unto Absalom, 00:10:35.43\00:10:38.79 God Save the king, God save the king. And Absalom said to Hushai 00:10:38.82\00:10:43.70 Is this thy kindness to thy friend? why wentest thou not 00:10:43.73\00:10:47.45 with thy friend? And Hushai said unto Absalom, Nay; but whom the 00:10:47.72\00:10:52.51 Lord, and this people, and all the men of Israel, choose, 00:10:52.54\00:10:54.90 his will I be, and with him will I abide. And again, whom should 00:10:54.93\00:11:00.36 I serve? should I not serve in the presence of his son? 00:11:00.39\00:11:03.18 as I have served in thy father's presence, so will I be in thy 00:11:03.21\00:11:07.49 presence. Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give counsel 00:11:07.52\00:11:12.47 among you what we shall do. And Ahithophel said unto Absalom 00:11:12.50\00:11:16.62 Go in unto thy father's concubines, 00:11:16.65\00:11:19.62 which he hath left to keep the house; and all Israel shall hear 00:11:19.65\00:11:23.39 that thou art abhorred of they father: then shall the hands of 00:11:23.42\00:11:26.83 all that are with thee be strong So they spread Absalom a tent 00:11:26.86\00:11:31.87 upon the top of the house; and Absalom went in unto 00:11:31.90\00:11:35.41 his father's concubines, in the sight of all Israel. 00:11:35.44\00:11:38.24 And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those 00:11:38.27\00:11:41.73 days, was as if a man had inquired at the oracle of God: 00:11:41.76\00:11:45.33 so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David 00:11:45.36\00:11:49.42 and with Absalom. We're continuing in the book 00:11:49.45\00:11:53.24 of 2nd Samuel, chapter 17, This is the King James Version. 00:11:53.27\00:11:57.16 Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out 00:11:57.19\00:12:02.82 12,000 men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: 00:12:02.85\00:12:07.76 and I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, 00:12:07.79\00:12:11.03 and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him 00:12:11.06\00:12:14.65 shall flee; and I will smite the king only: And I will bring back 00:12:14.68\00:12:18.57 all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if 00:12:18.60\00:12:21.94 all returned: so all the people shall be in peace. 00:12:21.97\00:12:24.97 And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders 00:12:25.00\00:12:28.70 of Israel. Then said Absalom, call now Hushai the Archite 00:12:28.73\00:12:33.01 also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. 00:12:33.04\00:12:35.98 And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him 00:12:36.01\00:12:41.13 saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: 00:12:41.16\00:12:44.55 shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou. 00:12:44.58\00:12:48.89 And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel 00:12:48.92\00:12:54.25 has given is not good at this time. For, said Hushai, 00:12:54.28\00:12:58.81 thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be might men, 00:12:58.84\00:13:02.63 and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her 00:13:02.66\00:13:06.31 whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, 00:13:06.34\00:13:09.28 and will not lodge with the people. Behold, he is hid now 00:13:09.31\00:13:12.90 in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, 00:13:12.93\00:13:16.30 when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever 00:13:16.33\00:13:18.75 heareth it will say, There s a slaughter among the people that 00:13:18.78\00:13:21.96 follow Absalom. And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as 00:13:21.99\00:13:25.71 a heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth 00:13:25.74\00:13:29.15 that thy father is a might man, and they which be with him 00:13:29.18\00:13:32.54 are valiant men. Therefore I counsel that all Israel be 00:13:32.57\00:13:37.21 generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, 00:13:37.24\00:13:40.61 as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou 00:13:40.64\00:13:44.89 go to battle in thine own person. So shall we come upon 00:13:44.92\00:13:49.49 him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon 00:13:49.52\00:13:52.23 him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all 00:13:52.26\00:13:55.68 the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one 00:13:55.71\00:13:59.09 Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel 00:13:59.12\00:14:03.39 bring ropes to that city and we will draw it into the river, 00:14:03.42\00:14:05.99 until there be not one small stone found there. 00:14:06.02\00:14:09.22 And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, 00:14:09.25\00:14:11.98 The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than 00:14:12.01\00:14:14.91 the counsel of Ahithophel. For the Lord had appointed to defeat 00:14:14.94\00:14:18.58 the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the Lord 00:14:18.61\00:14:22.63 might bring evil upon Absalom. We'll continue the story 00:14:22.66\00:14:27.23 the next time we are together. Until then, 00:14:27.26\00:14:28.89 May God bless and keep each one of us with his love and his 00:14:28.92\00:14:32.07 grace and his mercy. Goodbye. 00:14:32.10\00:14:33.07
