Hello and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.99\00:00:18.25 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we'll be reading from 2nd Samuel. 00:00:18.28\00:00:22.25 Before we start, let's pray together. Our Father in heaven, 00:00:22.28\00:00:26.25 thank you for preserving each of us to come to this moment to sit 00:00:26.55\00:00:31.42 in your presence and to hear your word. Help us to understand 00:00:31.45\00:00:35.42 what you would have us to take from these stories, and help us 00:00:35.45\00:00:39.79 to be fitted for service to you and to each other to your glory. 00:00:39.82\00:00:44.33 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:44.36\00:00:48.03 We're reading in 2nd Samuel, chapter 13, verse 1 and 00:00:48.06\00:00:53.39 This is the King James Version. 00:00:53.42\00:00:54.61 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom the son of David 00:00:54.64\00:01:00.14 had a fair sister, whose name was Tamar; and Amnon the son of 00:01:00.17\00:01:05.74 David, loved her. And Amnon was so vexed, that he fell sick 00:01:05.77\00:01:10.61 for his sister Tamar; for she was a virgin; and Amnon thought 00:01:10.64\00:01:14.33 it hard for him to do anything to her. But Amnon had a friend, 00:01:14.36\00:01:18.41 whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah David's brother: 00:01:18.44\00:01:22.37 and Jonadab was a very subtil man. And he said unto him, 00:01:22.40\00:01:26.97 Why art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day? 00:01:27.00\00:01:30.44 wilt thou not tell me? And Amnon said unto him, I love Tamar, 00:01:30.47\00:01:34.77 my brother Absalom's sister. And Jonadab said unto him, 00:01:34.80\00:01:38.91 Lay thee down on thy bed and make thyself sick: and when thy 00:01:38.94\00:01:42.99 father cometh to see thee, say unto him, I pray thee, 00:01:43.02\00:01:47.13 let my sister Tamar come, and give me meat, and dress the meat 00:01:47.16\00:01:50.90 in my sight, that I may see it, and eat it at her hand. 00:01:50.93\00:01:54.83 So Amnon lay down, and made himself sick: and when the king 00:01:54.86\00:01:59.43 was come to see him, Amnon said unto the king, I pray thee, let 00:01:59.46\00:02:03.45 Tamar my sister come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight 00:02:03.48\00:02:07.63 that I might eat at her hand. Then David sent home to Tamar, 00:02:07.66\00:02:12.15 saying, Go now to thy brother Amnon's house and dress him meat 00:02:12.18\00:02:16.05 So Tamar went to her brother Amnon's house and he was laid 00:02:16.08\00:02:19.98 down. And she took flour and kneaded it and made cakes 00:02:20.01\00:02:23.74 in his sight and did bake the cakes. And she took a pan and 00:02:23.77\00:02:27.40 poured them out before him. But he refused to eat. And Amnon 00:02:27.43\00:02:32.20 said, Have out all men from me. And they went out every man 00:02:32.23\00:02:36.87 from him. And Amnon said unto Tamar, Bring the meat into the 00:02:36.90\00:02:41.68 chamber that I may eat of thine hand. And Tamar took the cakes 00:02:41.71\00:02:46.47 which she had made, and brought them into the chamber to Amnon 00:02:46.50\00:02:49.70 her brother. And when she had brought them unto him to eat, 00:02:49.73\00:02:53.54 he took hold of her, and said unto her, Come lie with me, 00:02:53.57\00:02:57.34 my sister. And she answered him, Nay my brother, do not force me; 00:02:57.37\00:03:01.65 for no such thing ought to be done in Israel: do not thou 00:03:01.68\00:03:05.63 this folly. And I, whither shall cause my shame to go? 00:03:05.66\00:03:10.49 and as for thee, thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel. 00:03:10.52\00:03:13.98 Now therefore, I pray thee, speak unto the king; 00:03:14.01\00:03:17.39 for he will not withhold me from thee. Howbeit he would not 00:03:17.42\00:03:21.68 hearken unto her voice: but being stronger than she, 00:03:21.71\00:03:25.57 forced her, and lay with her. Then Amnon hated her exceedingly 00:03:25.60\00:03:31.27 so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater than the 00:03:31.30\00:03:34.60 love wherewith he had loved her. And Amnon said unto her, Arise, 00:03:34.63\00:03:38.16 be gone. And she said unto him, There is no cause: this evil 00:03:38.19\00:03:44.06 in sending me away is greater than the other that thou didst 00:03:44.09\00:03:46.65 unto me. But he would not hearken unto her. 00:03:46.68\00:03:49.89 Then he called his servant that ministered unto him, and said, 00:03:49.92\00:03:53.70 Put now this woman out from me, and bolt the door after her. 00:03:53.73\00:03:58.09 And she had a garment of divers colors upon her: for with such 00:03:58.12\00:04:03.28 robes were the king's daughters that were virgins appareled. 00:04:03.31\00:04:06.31 Then his servant brought her out, and bolted the door after 00:04:06.34\00:04:09.94 her. And Tamar put ashes on her head, and rent her garment 00:04:09.97\00:04:14.38 of divers colors that was on her and laid her hand on her head, 00:04:14.41\00:04:18.49 and went on crying. And Absalom her brother said unto her, 00:04:18.52\00:04:23.73 Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, 00:04:23.76\00:04:28.39 my sister: he is thy brother; regard not this thing. 00:04:28.42\00:04:31.89 So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom's house. 00:04:31.92\00:04:36.80 But when king David heard of all these things, he was very wroth. 00:04:36.83\00:04:41.90 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor 00:04:41.93\00:04:46.29 bad: but Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister 00:04:46.32\00:04:51.48 Tamar. And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom 00:04:51.51\00:04:56.48 had sheepshearers in Baalhazor, which is beside Ephraim: 00:04:56.51\00:05:01.00 and Absalom invited all the king's sons. And Absalom came 00:05:01.03\00:05:04.46 to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath 00:05:04.49\00:05:07.97 sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech thee, and his servants 00:05:08.00\00:05:11.83 go with thy servant. And the king said to Absalom, Nay my son 00:05:11.86\00:05:17.17 let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto thee. 00:05:17.20\00:05:21.10 And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. 00:05:21.13\00:05:25.90 Then said Absalom, If not I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go 00:05:25.93\00:05:32.25 with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? 00:05:32.28\00:05:36.09 But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king's 00:05:36.12\00:05:40.40 sons go with him. Now Absalom had commanded his servants, 00:05:40.43\00:05:44.37 saying, Mark ye now when Amnon's heart is merry with wine, 00:05:44.40\00:05:47.88 and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon; then kill him, fear not: 00:05:47.91\00:05:52.81 hath not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant. 00:05:52.84\00:05:57.00 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had 00:05:57.03\00:06:01.46 commanded. Then all the king's sons arose and every man gat him 00:06:01.49\00:06:05.43 up upon his mule, and fled. And it came to pass, while they 00:06:05.46\00:06:09.68 were in the way that tidings came to David, saying, Absalom 00:06:09.71\00:06:13.45 has slain all the king's sons, and there is not one of them 00:06:13.48\00:06:16.64 left. Then the king arose, and tare his garments, and lay on 00:06:16.67\00:06:21.26 the earth; and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent 00:06:21.29\00:06:25.50 and Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother answered and 00:06:25.53\00:06:30.16 said, Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the 00:06:30.19\00:06:34.12 young men, the king's sons; for Amnon only is dead: for by the 00:06:34.15\00:06:38.36 appointment of Absalom this hath been determined from the day 00:06:38.39\00:06:41.16 that he forced his sister Tamar. Now therefore let not my lord 00:06:41.19\00:06:46.50 the king take the thing to his heart, to think that all the 00:06:46.53\00:06:48.85 king's sons are dead: for Amnon only is dead. But Absalom fled. 00:06:48.88\00:06:54.28 And the young man that kept the watch lifted up his eyes, and 00:06:54.31\00:06:57.83 looked, and, behold, there came much people by the way of the 00:06:57.86\00:07:01.11 hillside behind him. And Jonadab said unto the king. Behold, 00:07:01.14\00:07:05.54 the king's sons come: as thy servant said, so it is. 00:07:05.57\00:07:09.55 And it came to pass, as soon as he had made an end of speaking 00:07:09.58\00:07:13.83 that, behold, the king's sons came and lifted up their voice 00:07:13.86\00:07:17.75 and wept: and the king also and all his servants wept very sore. 00:07:17.78\00:07:23.17 But Absalom fled, and went to Talmai, the son of Ammihud, 00:07:23.20\00:07:28.60 king of Geshur. And David mourned for his son every day. 00:07:28.63\00:07:32.53 So Absalom fled, and went to Geshur, and was there 3 years. 00:07:32.56\00:07:36.84 And the soul of king David longed to go forth unto Absalom: 00:07:36.87\00:07:42.09 for he was comforted concerning Amnon, seeing he was dead. 00:07:42.12\00:07:46.52 Continuing in 2nd Samuel, chapter 14. 00:07:46.55\00:07:50.28 This is the King James Version. 00:07:50.31\00:07:51.77 Now Joab the son of Zeruiah perceived that the king's heart 00:07:51.80\00:07:58.92 was toward Absalom. And Joab sent to Tekoah, and fetched 00:07:58.95\00:08:04.62 thence a wise woman, and said unto her, I pray thee, feign 00:08:04.65\00:08:09.79 thyself to be a mourner, and put on now mourning apparel, 00:08:09.82\00:08:14.31 and anoint not thyself with oil but be as a woman that had a 00:08:14.34\00:08:19.15 long time mourned for the dead. And come to the king, and speak 00:08:19.18\00:08:23.48 on this manner unto him. So Joab put the words in her mouth. 00:08:23.51\00:08:28.27 And when the woman of Tekoah spake to the king, she fell on 00:08:28.30\00:08:33.46 her face to the ground, and did obeisance, and said, Help O king 00:08:33.49\00:08:36.68 And the king said unto her, What aileth thee? And she answered, 00:08:36.71\00:08:41.55 I am indeed a widow woman, and mine husband is dead. 00:08:41.58\00:08:44.60 And thy handmaid had two sons, and they two strove together 00:08:44.63\00:08:48.82 in the field, and there was none to part them, but the one smote 00:08:48.85\00:08:52.19 the other, and slew him. And, behold the whole family is risen 00:08:52.22\00:08:57.45 against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his 00:08:57.48\00:09:00.21 brother that we may kill him for the life of his brother whom he 00:09:00.24\00:09:03.69 slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall 00:09:03.72\00:09:07.51 quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my 00:09:07.54\00:09:10.87 husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth. 00:09:10.90\00:09:14.83 And the king said unto the woman, Go to thine house, 00:09:14.86\00:09:18.73 and I will give charge concerning thee. 00:09:18.76\00:09:20.76 And the woman of Tekoah said unto the king, My lord, O king, 00:09:20.79\00:09:25.67 the iniquity be on me, and on my father's house: and the king 00:09:25.70\00:09:29.28 and his throne be guiltless. And the king said, Whosoever 00:09:29.31\00:09:33.84 saith aught unto thee, bring him to me, and he shall not touch 00:09:33.87\00:09:37.98 thee any more. Then said she, I pray thee, let the king 00:09:38.01\00:09:42.87 remember the Lord thy God, that thou wouldest not suffer the 00:09:42.90\00:09:46.47 revengers of blood to destroy any more, lest they destroy my 00:09:46.50\00:09:50.27 son. And he said, As the lord liveth, there shall not one hair 00:09:50.30\00:09:54.35 of thy son fall to the earth. Then the woman said, Let thine 00:09:54.38\00:09:59.09 handmaid, I pray thee, speak one word unto my lord the king. 00:09:59.12\00:10:02.36 And he said, Say on. And the woman said, Wherefore then hast 00:10:02.39\00:10:08.03 thou thought such a thing against the people of God? 00:10:08.06\00:10:10.43 for the king doth speak this thing as one which is faulty, 00:10:10.46\00:10:14.01 in that the king doth not fetch home again his banished. 00:10:14.04\00:10:17.52 For we must needs die and are as water spilt on the ground, which 00:10:17.55\00:10:22.42 cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any 00:10:22.45\00:10:25.62 person: yet doth he devise means that his banished be not 00:10:25.65\00:10:29.91 expelled from him. Now therefore that I am come to speak of this 00:10:29.94\00:10:34.80 thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.62 me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the 00:10:37.65\00:10:41.36 king; it may be that the king will perform the request 00:10:41.39\00:10:44.19 of his handmaid. For the king will hear, to deliver 00:10:44.22\00:10:47.16 his handmaid out of the hand of the man that would destroy me 00:10:47.19\00:10:49.87 and my son together out of the inheritance of God. 00:10:49.90\00:10:53.06 Then thine handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall 00:10:53.09\00:10:57.88 now be comfortable for an angel of God, so is my lord the king 00:10:57.91\00:11:02.13 to discern good and bad: therefore the Lord thy God 00:11:02.16\00:11:05.60 will be with thee. Then the king answered and said unto the 00:11:05.63\00:11:09.67 woman, Hide not from me, I pray thee, the thing that I shall ask 00:11:09.70\00:11:13.44 thee. And the woman said, Let my lord the king now speak. 00:11:13.47\00:11:17.78 And the king said, Is not the hand of Joab with thee in all 00:11:17.81\00:11:23.49 this? And the woman answered and said, As thy soul liveth, 00:11:23.52\00:11:27.47 my lord the king, none can turn to the right hand or to the left 00:11:27.50\00:11:31.32 from aught that my lord the king hath spoken: for thy servant 00:11:31.35\00:11:35.23 Joab, he bade me, and he put all these words in the mouth of 00:11:35.26\00:11:38.30 thine handmaid: To fetch about this form of speech hath thy 00:11:38.33\00:11:42.66 servant Joab done this thing: and my lord is wise, according 00:11:42.69\00:11:47.19 to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things 00:11:47.22\00:11:49.69 that are in the earth. And the king said unto Joab, Behold now, 00:11:49.72\00:11:54.74 I have done this thing: go therefore, bring the young man 00:11:54.77\00:11:58.16 Absalom again. And Joab fell to the ground on his face, 00:11:58.19\00:12:02.64 and bowed himself, and thanked the king: and Joab said, Today 00:12:02.67\00:12:06.85 thy servant knoweth that I have found grace in thy sight, 00:12:06.88\00:12:09.98 my lord, O king, in that the king hath fulfilled the request 00:12:10.01\00:12:14.49 of his servant. So Joab arose and went to Geshur, and brought 00:12:14.52\00:12:19.23 Absalom to Jerusalem. And the king said, Let him turn to his 00:12:19.26\00:12:23.26 own house, and let him not see my face. So Absalom returned 00:12:23.29\00:12:28.13 to his own house, and saw not the king's face. 00:12:28.16\00:12:30.98 But in all Israel there was none to be so much praised as Absalom 00:12:31.01\00:12:36.59 for his beauty: from the sole of his foot even to the crown of 00:12:36.62\00:12:41.16 his head there was no blemish in him. And when he polled his 00:12:41.19\00:12:46.09 head, for it was at every year's end that he polled it: because 00:12:46.12\00:12:49.91 the hair was heavy on him, therefore he polled it: 00:12:49.94\00:12:52.29 he weighed the hair of his head at 200 shekels after the king's 00:12:52.32\00:12:56.43 weight. And unto Absalom there were born three sons, and one 00:12:56.46\00:13:01.14 daughter, whose name was Tamar: she was a woman of a fair 00:13:01.17\00:13:06.22 countenance. So Absalom dwelt two full years in Jerusalem, 00:13:06.25\00:13:10.77 and saw not the king's face. Therefore Absalom sent for Joab, 00:13:10.80\00:13:15.04 to have sent him to the king; but he would no come to him: 00:13:15.07\00:13:18.27 and when he sent again the 2nd time, he would not come. 00:13:18.30\00:13:21.70 Therefore he said unto his servants, See, Joab's field is 00:13:21.73\00:13:27.27 near mine, and he hath barley there; go and set it on fire. 00:13:27.30\00:13:30.64 And Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Then Joab arose, 00:13:30.67\00:13:35.86 and came to Absalom unto his house, and said unto him, 00:13:35.89\00:13:38.81 Wherefore have thy servants set my field on fire? 00:13:38.84\00:13:41.13 And Absalom answered Joab, Behold, I sent unto thee, saying 00:13:41.16\00:13:45.88 Come hither, that I may send thee to the king, to say, 00:13:45.91\00:13:48.87 Wherefore am I come from Geshur? It had been good for me 00:13:48.90\00:13:52.41 to have been there still: now therefore let me see the king's 00:13:52.44\00:13:56.68 face; and if there be any iniquity in me, let him kill me. 00:13:56.71\00:14:00.32 So Joab came to the king, and told him: and when he had called 00:14:00.35\00:14:05.00 for Absalom, he came to the king and bowed himself on his face 00:14:05.03\00:14:08.01 to the ground before the king: and the king kissed Absalom 00:14:08.04\00:14:11.34 We're continuing with chapter fifteen, in 2nd Samuel. 00:14:11.37\00:14:15.25 And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him 00:14:15.28\00:14:19.01 chariots and horses, and 50 men to run before him. And Absalom 00:14:19.04\00:14:23.47 rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: 00:14:23.50\00:14:25.54 and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came 00:14:25.57\00:14:29.40 to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, 00:14:29.43\00:14:32.38 and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of 00:14:32.41\00:14:35.94 one of the tribes of Israel. 00:14:35.97\00:14:39.18
