Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.99\00:00:18.67 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we are reading in 1 Samuel, 00:00:18.70\00:00:22.24 chapter 25. When we were last together, we were reading the 00:00:22.27\00:00:25.80 story of Nabal and Abigail. Nabal and Abigail, husband 00:00:25.83\00:00:31.20 and wife, she was wise and beautiful, when he was churlish 00:00:31.23\00:00:35.18 and bad natured. David had sent his men to Nabal to ask of him a 00:00:35.21\00:00:40.30 favor and Nabal refused David's men. And as we continue in 00:00:40.33\00:00:46.24 chapter 25, we'll start on verse 12. But let's pray before we 00:00:46.27\00:00:49.79 start. Dear Lord, thank you so much for these words 00:00:49.82\00:00:53.92 and these stories. May we not just hear them today, but may 00:00:53.95\00:00:58.84 we take from them the lesson that you would have each of us 00:00:58.87\00:01:02.93 to put into practice in our hearts and in our lives 00:01:02.96\00:01:05.44 to your glory. Please be with us now and give us wisdom and 00:01:05.47\00:01:09.61 understanding as we read. We love you so much, and thank you 00:01:09.64\00:01:12.42 for loving us. Amen. - Picking up in 1 Samuel 25, verse 12. 00:01:12.45\00:01:17.85 So David's young men turned their way, and went again, 00:01:17.88\00:01:20.52 and came and told him all those sayings. And David said unto his 00:01:20.55\00:01:25.55 men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every 00:01:25.58\00:01:31.46 man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: 00:01:31.49\00:01:35.59 and there went up after David about 400 men; and 200 abode 00:01:35.62\00:01:40.43 by the stuff. But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's 00:01:40.46\00:01:44.95 wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness 00:01:44.98\00:01:49.16 to salute our master; and he railed on them. But the men were 00:01:49.19\00:01:54.72 very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any 00:01:54.75\00:01:57.71 thing, as long as we were conversant with them, 00:01:57.74\00:02:00.26 when we were in the fields: They were a wall unto us 00:02:00.29\00:02:03.93 both by night and day, all the while we were with them 00:02:03.96\00:02:07.10 keeping the sheep. Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt 00:02:07.13\00:02:11.73 do; for evil is determined against our master, and against 00:02:11.76\00:02:15.98 all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, 00:02:16.01\00:02:19.65 that a man cannot speak to him. Then Abigail made haste, 00:02:19.68\00:02:24.08 and took 200 loaves and 2 bottles of wine, and 5 sheep 00:02:24.11\00:02:29.33 ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, 00:02:29.36\00:02:32.46 and hundred clusters of raisins, and 200 cakes of figs 00:02:32.49\00:02:36.97 and laid them on asses. And she said unto her servants, Go on 00:02:37.00\00:02:42.27 before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not 00:02:42.30\00:02:46.21 her husband, Nabal. And it was so, as she rode on the ass, 00:02:46.24\00:02:50.80 that she came down by the covert of the hill, and behold, David 00:02:50.83\00:02:54.81 and his men came down against her and she met them. 00:02:54.84\00:02:58.58 Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this 00:02:58.61\00:03:02.90 fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed 00:03:02.93\00:03:05.17 of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil 00:03:05.20\00:03:08.59 for good. So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, 00:03:08.62\00:03:13.21 if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light 00:03:13.24\00:03:16.74 any that pisseth against the wall. And when Abigail saw David 00:03:16.77\00:03:21.65 she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on 00:03:21.68\00:03:25.81 her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and fell at his feet 00:03:25.84\00:03:30.64 and said, upon me, my lord, upon let this iniquity be: and let 00:03:30.67\00:03:37.46 thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, 00:03:37.49\00:03:40.44 and hear the words of thine handmaid. Let not my lord, 00:03:40.47\00:03:44.34 I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: 00:03:44.37\00:03:48.37 for as his name is, so is he: Nabal is his name, and folly 00:03:48.40\00:03:53.59 is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not 00:03:53.62\00:03:57.68 the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send. Now therefore, 00:03:57.71\00:04:01.23 my lord, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the 00:04:01.26\00:04:05.43 Lord hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood and from 00:04:05.46\00:04:09.42 avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, 00:04:09.45\00:04:13.01 and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. 00:04:13.04\00:04:16.65 And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought 00:04:16.68\00:04:20.18 unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that 00:04:20.21\00:04:23.62 follow my lord. I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine 00:04:23.65\00:04:27.42 handmaid: for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure 00:04:27.45\00:04:31.06 house: because my lord fighteth the battles of the Lord, and 00:04:31.09\00:04:34.42 evil hath not been found in thee all thy days. Yet a man is risen 00:04:34.45\00:04:39.88 to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord 00:04:39.91\00:04:43.62 shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God; 00:04:43.65\00:04:46.77 and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out 00:04:46.80\00:04:51.56 of the middle of a sling. And it shall come to pass when the lord 00:04:51.59\00:04:56.18 shall have done to my lord according to all the good 00:04:56.21\00:04:59.00 that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed 00:04:59.03\00:05:01.99 thee ruler over Israel; That this shall be no grief unto thee 00:05:02.02\00:05:06.04 nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed 00:05:06.07\00:05:10.53 blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: 00:05:10.56\00:05:13.92 but when the lord shall have dealt well with my lord, 00:05:13.95\00:05:17.24 then remember thine handmaid. And David said to Abigail, 00:05:17.27\00:05:22.26 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day 00:05:22.29\00:05:25.71 to meet me: and blessed be thy advice and blessed be thou, 00:05:25.74\00:05:30.35 which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, 00:05:30.38\00:05:33.99 and from avenging myself with mine own hand. For in very deed, 00:05:34.02\00:05:38.59 as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back 00:05:38.62\00:05:42.51 from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me 00:05:42.54\00:05:45.86 surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light 00:05:45.89\00:05:49.93 any that pisseth against the wall. So David received of her 00:05:49.96\00:05:55.06 hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up 00:05:55.09\00:05:59.71 in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, 00:05:59.74\00:06:03.85 and have accepted thy person. And Abigail came to Nabal; and, 00:06:03.88\00:06:08.97 behold he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; 00:06:09.00\00:06:11.99 and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very 00:06:12.02\00:06:15.65 drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the 00:06:15.68\00:06:20.29 morning light. But it came to pass in the morning, when the 00:06:20.32\00:06:24.12 wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these 00:06:24.15\00:06:27.88 things, that his heart died within him, and he became as 00:06:27.91\00:06:31.84 a stone. And it came to pass about ten days after, 00:06:31.87\00:06:36.00 that the Lord smote Nabal, that he died. And when David heard 00:06:36.03\00:06:41.34 that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath 00:06:41.37\00:06:44.19 pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath 00:06:44.22\00:06:48.31 kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the 00:06:48.34\00:06:52.20 wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and 00:06:52.23\00:06:56.51 communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife. 00:06:56.54\00:06:59.74 And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, 00:06:59.77\00:07:04.25 they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, 00:07:04.28\00:07:08.68 to take thee to him to wife. And she arose, and bowed 00:07:08.71\00:07:13.53 herself on her face to the earth and said, Behold, let thine 00:07:13.56\00:07:18.08 handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants 00:07:18.11\00:07:21.58 of my lord. And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, 00:07:21.61\00:07:28.03 with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went 00:07:28.06\00:07:32.25 after the messengers of David, and became his wife. 00:07:32.28\00:07:34.80 David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also 00:07:34.83\00:07:40.66 both of them his wives. But Saul had given Michal his daughter, 00:07:40.69\00:07:45.40 David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim. 00:07:45.43\00:07:49.93 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 26, 00:07:49.96\00:07:54.03 and this is the King James Version. 00:07:54.06\00:07:55.35 And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, 00:07:55.38\00:08:01.05 Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is 00:08:01.08\00:08:04.69 before Jeshimon? Then Saul arose, and went down to the 00:08:04.72\00:08:09.57 wilderness of Ziph, having 3,000 chosen men of Israel with him, 00:08:09.60\00:08:13.01 to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul pitched in the 00:08:13.04\00:08:18.01 hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. 00:08:18.04\00:08:21.57 But David abode in the wilderness and he saw that Saul 00:08:21.60\00:08:25.67 came after him into the wilderness. David therefore 00:08:25.70\00:08:29.21 sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed. 00:08:29.24\00:08:33.99 And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched 00:08:34.02\00:08:38.06 and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner, 00:08:38.09\00:08:42.14 the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the 00:08:42.17\00:08:46.27 trench and the people pitched round about him. Then answered 00:08:46.30\00:08:50.23 David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai 00:08:50.26\00:08:54.67 the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down 00:08:54.70\00:08:59.77 with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down 00:08:59.80\00:09:04.53 with thee. So David and Abishai came to the people by night: 00:09:04.56\00:09:09.00 and behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear 00:09:09.03\00:09:14.03 stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the 00:09:14.06\00:09:17.42 people lay round about him. Then said Abishai to David, 00:09:17.45\00:09:21.82 God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: 00:09:21.85\00:09:24.91 now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even 00:09:24.94\00:09:29.01 to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the 2nd time. 00:09:29.04\00:09:31.87 And David said to Abishai Destroy him not: for who can 00:09:31.90\00:09:36.84 stretch forth his hand against the Lord's anointed, 00:09:36.87\00:09:39.11 and be guiltless? David said furthermore, As the Lord liveth, 00:09:39.14\00:09:43.75 the Lord shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or 00:09:43.78\00:09:48.15 he shall descend into battle, and perish. The Lord forbid 00:09:48.18\00:09:52.50 that I should stretch forth mine hand against the Lord's anointed 00:09:52.53\00:09:55.93 but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster 00:09:55.96\00:10:00.28 and the cruse of water, and let us go. So David took the spear 00:10:00.31\00:10:04.60 and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat 00:10:04.63\00:10:07.26 them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awakened: 00:10:07.29\00:10:10.78 for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep 00:10:10.81\00:10:13.64 from the Lord was fallen upon them. 00:10:13.67\00:10:15.23 Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the top 00:10:15.26\00:10:18.93 of an hill afar off; a great space being between them: 00:10:18.96\00:10:22.55 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, 00:10:22.58\00:10:27.36 saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered 00:10:27.39\00:10:32.43 and said, Who art thou that criest to the king? 00:10:32.46\00:10:34.69 And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who 00:10:34.72\00:10:40.87 is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou 00:10:40.90\00:10:44.74 not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people 00:10:44.77\00:10:48.79 in to destroy the king thy lord, This thing is not good that 00:10:48.82\00:10:52.76 thou hast done. As the Lord liveth, ye are worthy to die, 00:10:52.79\00:10:56.26 because ye have not kept your master, the Lord's anointed. 00:10:56.29\00:10:59.05 And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of 00:10:59.08\00:11:03.79 water that was at his bolster. And Saul knew David's voice, 00:11:03.82\00:11:09.05 and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, 00:11:09.08\00:11:14.92 It is my voice, my lord, O king. And he said, Wherefore doth my 00:11:14.95\00:11:21.70 Lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? 00:11:21.73\00:11:25.44 or what evil is in mine hand? Now therefore, I pray thee, 00:11:25.47\00:11:30.00 let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. 00:11:30.03\00:11:32.40 If the Lord have stirred thee up against me, let him accept 00:11:32.43\00:11:37.23 an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they 00:11:37.26\00:11:42.20 before the Lord; for they have driven me out this day from 00:11:42.23\00:11:46.27 abiding in the inheritance of the Lord, saying, Go serve other 00:11:46.30\00:11:49.48 gods. Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before 00:11:49.51\00:11:54.89 the face of the Lord: for the king of Israel is come out 00:11:54.92\00:11:58.10 to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge 00:11:58.13\00:12:01.19 in the mountains. Then said Saul, I have sinned: 00:12:01.22\00:12:05.62 return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, 00:12:05.65\00:12:10.08 because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I 00:12:10.11\00:12:16.70 have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. And David 00:12:16.73\00:12:21.79 answered and said, Behold the king's spear! and let one of the 00:12:21.82\00:12:25.08 young men come over and fetch it. The Lord render to every 00:12:25.11\00:12:28.95 man his righteousness and his faithfulness: for the Lord 00:12:28.98\00:12:32.48 delivered thee into my hand today, but I would not stretch 00:12:32.51\00:12:36.11 forth my hand against the Lord's anointed. And behold as thy life 00:12:36.14\00:12:41.09 was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life 00:12:41.12\00:12:46.25 be much set by in the eyes of the Lord, and let him deliver me 00:12:46.28\00:12:50.84 out of all tribulation. Then Saul said to David, 00:12:50.87\00:12:55.15 Blessed be thou, my son David, thou shalt both do great things, 00:12:55.18\00:12:59.71 and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, 00:12:59.74\00:13:04.17 and Saul returned to his place. 00:13:04.20\00:13:06.52 We're continuing in the book of 1st Samuel, chapter 27, 00:13:06.55\00:13:10.85 and this is the King James Version. 00:13:10.88\00:13:12.15 And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day 00:13:12.18\00:13:17.52 by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me 00:13:17.55\00:13:20.13 than that I should speedily escape into the land of the 00:13:20.16\00:13:22.72 the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me 00:13:22.75\00:13:26.15 any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his 00:13:26.18\00:13:29.20 hand. And David arose, and he passed over with the 600 men 00:13:29.23\00:13:33.70 that were with him unto Achish, the son of Maoch, king of Gath. 00:13:33.73\00:13:37.67 And David dwelt with Achish at Gath, he and his men, every man 00:13:37.70\00:13:42.66 with his household, even David with his two wives, 00:13:42.69\00:13:46.05 Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, 00:13:46.08\00:13:50.36 Nabal's wife. And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath 00:13:50.39\00:13:54.82 and he sought no more again for him. 00:13:54.85\00:13:56.78 And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine 00:13:56.81\00:14:01.49 eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, 00:14:01.52\00:14:04.67 that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell 00:14:04.70\00:14:07.89 in the royal city with thee? Then Achish gave him Ziklag 00:14:07.92\00:14:11.91 that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of 00:14:11.94\00:14:15.10 of Judah unto this day. And the time that David dwelt in the 00:14:15.13\00:14:19.36 country of the Philistines was a full year and four months. 00:14:19.39\00:14:23.27 Thank you for joining with me today to read the word of God. 00:14:23.30\00:14:27.34 Until next time, may God keep us all by His grace 00:14:27.37\00:14:31.06 and his mercy. Thank you and God bless. 00:14:31.09\00:14:33.38
