Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:17.03\00:00:18.79 I'm Kelly Mowrer and today we're going to read together 00:00:18.82\00:00:21.69 in the book of 1 Samuel. We're in the story of David as he 00:00:21.72\00:00:26.44 flees from King Saul, who is trying to kill him. 00:00:26.47\00:00:29.86 Before we pick up the story let's pray together. 00:00:29.89\00:00:32.48 Dear Lord, thank you for saving us, for redeeming us and 00:00:32.51\00:00:40.83 we ask you to be our Master as well as our Savior. 00:00:40.86\00:00:45.07 May we, like David, commit our whole heart to you and turn not 00:00:45.10\00:00:50.54 from doing your words. Now teach us your word 00:00:50.57\00:00:53.06 in this time together. We love you and thank you for loving us. 00:00:53.09\00:00:56.01 Amen. We're reading in 1 Samuel, chapter 22, and beginning 00:00:56.04\00:01:01.43 with verse 9. Then answered Doeg the Edomite, 00:01:01.46\00:01:05.64 which was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son 00:01:05.67\00:01:09.99 of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. 00:01:10.02\00:01:13.52 And he inquired of the Lord for him, and gave him victuals, 00:01:13.55\00:01:16.93 and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. 00:01:16.96\00:01:19.10 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, 00:01:19.13\00:01:23.44 the son of Ahitub. And all his father's house, the priests 00:01:23.47\00:01:27.22 that were in Nob: and they came all of them to the king. 00:01:27.25\00:01:30.67 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, 00:01:30.70\00:01:36.19 Here I am, my lord. And Saul said unto him, Why have ye 00:01:36.22\00:01:40.56 conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou 00:01:40.59\00:01:44.40 hast given him bread, and a sword, and has inquired of God 00:01:44.43\00:01:47.34 for him that he should rise against me to lie in wait, 00:01:47.37\00:01:50.37 as at this day? Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, 00:01:50.40\00:01:54.92 And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, which is 00:01:54.95\00:01:59.51 the king's son in law, and goeth at thy bidding, and is honorable 00:01:59.54\00:02:02.44 in thine house? Did I then begin to inquire of God for him? 00:02:02.47\00:02:06.47 Be it far from me: let not the king impute any thing 00:02:06.50\00:02:10.80 unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father: 00:02:10.83\00:02:13.46 for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. 00:02:13.49\00:02:16.96 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou and 00:02:16.99\00:02:21.20 all thy father's house. And the king said unto the footmen 00:02:21.23\00:02:24.88 that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of the Lord; 00:02:24.91\00:02:27.29 because their hand also is with David, and because they knew 00:02:27.32\00:02:30.14 when he fled, and did not shew it to me. But the servants of 00:02:30.17\00:02:33.56 the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the 00:02:33.59\00:02:36.87 priests of the Lord. And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, 00:02:36.90\00:02:41.28 and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, 00:02:41.31\00:02:44.84 and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore 00:02:44.87\00:02:50.14 and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. and Nob, the city 00:02:50.17\00:02:55.99 of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, 00:02:56.02\00:02:58.80 both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen and 00:02:58.83\00:03:02.95 asses, and sheep with the edge of the sword. 00:03:02.98\00:03:05.52 And one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, 00:03:05.55\00:03:09.83 named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David. 00:03:09.86\00:03:13.36 And Abiathar shewed David that Saul had slain 00:03:13.39\00:03:17.28 the Lord's priests. And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it 00:03:17.31\00:03:21.53 that day when Doeg the Edomite was there, 00:03:21.56\00:03:23.64 that he would surely tell Saul: I have occasioned the death 00:03:23.67\00:03:27.36 of all the persons of thy father's house. 00:03:27.39\00:03:29.38 Abide thou with me, fear not: for he that seeketh my life 00:03:29.41\00:03:34.28 seeketh thy life: but with me thou shalt be in safeguard. 00:03:34.31\00:03:38.78 We're continuing in the book of 1 Samuel, chapter 23, 00:03:38.81\00:03:42.54 and this is the King James Version. 00:03:42.57\00:03:43.86 Then they told David, saying, Behold, the Philistines fight 00:03:43.89\00:03:48.74 against Keilah, and they rob the threshingfloors. 00:03:48.77\00:03:51.91 Therefore David inquired of the Lord, saying, Shall I go and 00:03:51.94\00:03:56.12 smite these Philistines? And the Lord said unto David, Go, 00:03:56.15\00:03:59.70 and smite the Philistines, and save Keilah. And David's men 00:03:59.73\00:04:04.21 said unto him, Behold, we be afraid here in Judah: how much 00:04:04.24\00:04:08.30 more then if we come to Keilah against the armies of 00:04:08.33\00:04:10.79 the Philistines? Then David inquired of the Lord yet again. 00:04:10.82\00:04:14.68 And the Lord answered him, and said, Arise go down to Keilah: 00:04:14.71\00:04:18.85 for I will deliver the Philistines into thine hand. 00:04:18.88\00:04:21.69 So David and his men went to Keilah, and fought with the 00:04:21.72\00:04:26.16 Philistines, and brought away their cattle, and smote them 00:04:26.19\00:04:29.30 with a great slaughter. So David saved the inhabitants 00:04:29.33\00:04:33.02 of Keilah. And it came to pass, when Abiathar the son of 00:04:33.05\00:04:37.91 Ahimelech fled to David to Keilah, that he came down 00:04:37.94\00:04:41.57 with an ephod in his hand. And it was told Saul 00:04:41.60\00:04:45.59 that David was come to Keilah. And Saul said, God hath 00:04:45.62\00:04:49.98 delivered him into mine hand; for he is shut in, by entering 00:04:50.01\00:04:53.08 into a town that hath gates and bars. And Saul called 00:04:53.11\00:04:57.86 all the people together to war, to go down to Keilah, 00:04:57.89\00:05:01.31 to besiege David and his men. And David knew that Saul 00:05:01.34\00:05:05.31 secretly practiced mischief against him; and he said to 00:05:05.34\00:05:08.10 Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod. 00:05:08.13\00:05:11.32 Then said David, O Lord God of Israel, thy servant hath 00:05:11.35\00:05:15.83 certainly heard that Saul seeketh to come to Keilah, 00:05:15.86\00:05:18.62 to destroy the city for my sake. Will the men of Keilah 00:05:18.65\00:05:22.61 deliver me up into his hand? Will Saul come down, 00:05:22.64\00:05:26.07 as thy servant hath heard? O Lord God of Israel, I beseech 00:05:26.10\00:05:30.08 thee, tell thy servant. And the Lord said, He will come down. 00:05:30.11\00:05:35.10 Then said David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men 00:05:35.13\00:05:40.54 into the hand of Saul? And the Lord said, They will deliver 00:05:40.57\00:05:44.01 thee up. Then David and his men, which were about 600, arose 00:05:44.04\00:05:49.17 and departed out of Keilah, and went whithersoever they could go 00:05:49.20\00:05:53.33 And it was told Saul that David was escaped from Keilah; 00:05:53.36\00:05:57.48 and he forbare to go forth. And David abode in the 00:05:57.51\00:06:01.18 wilderness in strong holds, and remained in a mountain 00:06:01.21\00:06:05.12 in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, 00:06:05.15\00:06:09.52 but God delivered him not into his hand. And David saw 00:06:09.55\00:06:15.02 that Saul was come out to seek his life: and David was in the 00:06:15.05\00:06:18.51 wilderness of Ziph in a wood. And Jonathan, Saul's son 00:06:18.54\00:06:23.72 arose and went to David into the wood, and strengthened 00:06:23.75\00:06:27.14 his hand in God. And he said unto him, Fear not: 00:06:27.17\00:06:31.12 for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou 00:06:31.15\00:06:35.11 shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; 00:06:35.14\00:06:38.89 and that also Saul my father knoweth. And they two 00:06:38.92\00:06:43.39 made a covenant before the Lord: and David abode 00:06:43.42\00:06:46.20 in the wood, and Jonathan went to his house. 00:06:46.23\00:06:48.17 Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, 00:06:48.20\00:06:53.06 Doth not David hide himself with us in strong holds 00:06:53.09\00:06:56.82 in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south 00:06:56.85\00:07:00.46 of Jeshimon? Now therefore, O king, come down according to all 00:07:00.49\00:07:05.41 the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be 00:07:05.44\00:07:08.92 to deliver him into the king's hand. And Saul said, 00:07:08.95\00:07:13.86 Blessed be ye of the Lord; for ye have compassion on me. 00:07:13.89\00:07:16.31 Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see his place 00:07:16.34\00:07:20.30 where his haunt is, and who hath seen him there: 00:07:20.33\00:07:23.20 for it is told me that he dealeth very subtly. 00:07:23.23\00:07:26.31 See therefore and take knowledge of all the lurking places where 00:07:26.34\00:07:30.16 he hideth himself, and come ye again to me with the certainty, 00:07:30.19\00:07:34.07 and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in 00:07:34.10\00:07:38.13 the land that I will search him out throughout all 00:07:38.16\00:07:40.84 the thousands of Judah. And they arose, and went to Ziph 00:07:40.87\00:07:45.50 before Saul; but David and his men were in the wilderness 00:07:45.53\00:07:49.42 of Maon, in the plain on the south of Jeshimon. 00:07:49.45\00:07:52.27 Saul also and his men went to seek him. And they told David: 00:07:52.30\00:07:57.29 wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode 00:07:57.32\00:08:00.61 in the wilderness of Maon. And when Saul heard that, he 00:08:00.64\00:08:04.13 pursued after David in the wilderness of Maon. 00:08:04.16\00:08:06.08 And Saul went on this side of the mountain, and David 00:08:06.11\00:08:09.35 and his men on that side of the mountain: and David 00:08:09.38\00:08:12.09 made haste to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his 00:08:12.12\00:08:16.14 men compassed David and his men round about to take them. 00:08:16.17\00:08:19.46 But there came a messenger unto Saul, saying, Haste thee, and 00:08:19.49\00:08:23.65 come for the Philistines have invaded the land. 00:08:23.68\00:08:25.63 Wherefore Saul returned from pursuing after David, and 00:08:25.66\00:08:29.74 went against the Philistines: therefore they called that place 00:08:29.77\00:08:33.74 Selahammahlekoth. And David went up form thence, 00:08:33.77\00:08:38.39 and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi. 00:08:38.42\00:08:41.61 We're continuing to read in 1st Samuel, chapter 24. 00:08:41.64\00:08:45.58 This is the King James Version. 00:08:45.61\00:08:47.14 And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following 00:08:47.17\00:08:53.77 the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, 00:08:53.80\00:08:56.99 David is in the wilderness of Engedi. Then Saul took 3,000 00:08:57.02\00:09:01.69 chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his 00:09:01.72\00:09:04.58 men upon the rocks of the wild goats. And he came to the 00:09:04.61\00:09:08.20 sheepcotes by the way, where there was a cave; and Saul 00:09:08.23\00:09:11.66 went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained 00:09:11.69\00:09:15.53 in the sides of the cave. And the men of David said unto him, 00:09:15.56\00:09:19.14 Behold, the day of which the Lord said unto thee, Behold, I 00:09:19.17\00:09:22.58 will deliver thine enemy into thy hand, that thou mayest 00:09:22.61\00:09:24.79 do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. 00:09:24.82\00:09:26.89 Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily 00:09:26.92\00:09:33.32 And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, 00:09:33.35\00:09:37.64 because he had cut off Saul's skirt. And he said unto his men, 00:09:37.67\00:09:41.51 the Lord forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, 00:09:41.54\00:09:46.21 the Lord's anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, 00:09:46.24\00:09:49.32 seeing he is the anointed of the Lord. So David stayed 00:09:49.35\00:09:53.58 his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise 00:09:53.61\00:09:57.02 against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went 00:09:57.05\00:10:00.82 on his way. David also arose afterward, and went out of 00:10:00.85\00:10:04.66 the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. 00:10:04.69\00:10:08.94 And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face 00:10:08.97\00:10:14.06 to the earth, and bowed himself. And David said to Saul, 00:10:14.09\00:10:17.52 Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, 00:10:17.55\00:10:20.81 Behold, David seeketh thy hurt? Behold, this day thine eyes 00:10:20.84\00:10:25.53 have seen how that the Lord had delivered thee today 00:10:25.56\00:10:28.73 into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: 00:10:28.76\00:10:32.41 but mine eye spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth 00:10:32.44\00:10:37.15 mine hand against my lord; for he is the Lord's anointed. 00:10:37.18\00:10:40.44 Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe 00:10:40.47\00:10:44.87 in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and 00:10:44.90\00:10:49.03 killed thee not, know thou and see that there is neither evil 00:10:49.06\00:10:53.76 nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against 00:10:53.79\00:10:57.15 thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it. 00:10:57.18\00:11:01.03 The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord avenge me 00:11:01.06\00:11:04.94 of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 00:11:04.97\00:11:08.64 As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth 00:11:08.67\00:11:13.26 from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. 00:11:13.29\00:11:16.76 After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou 00:11:16.79\00:11:20.70 pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea. The Lord therefore be 00:11:20.73\00:11:25.60 judge between me and thee, and see, an plead my cause, 00:11:25.63\00:11:29.60 and deliver me out of thine hand. And it came to pass, 00:11:29.63\00:11:33.21 when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, 00:11:33.24\00:11:36.51 that Saul said, Is this thy voice, my son David? 00:11:36.54\00:11:41.18 And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept. And he said to David, 00:11:41.21\00:11:45.58 Thou art more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, 00:11:45.61\00:11:50.87 whereas I have rewarded thee evil. And thou hast shewed 00:11:50.90\00:11:55.14 this day how that thou dealt well with me: forasmuch as 00:11:55.17\00:11:59.79 when the Lord had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst 00:11:59.82\00:12:03.29 me not. For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well 00:12:03.32\00:12:07.22 away? wherefore the Lord reward thee good for that thou hast 00:12:07.25\00:12:10.95 done unto me this day. And now, behold, I know well that thou 00:12:10.98\00:12:14.94 shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be 00:12:14.97\00:12:18.32 established in thine hand. Swear now therefore 00:12:18.35\00:12:21.21 unto me by the Lord, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after 00:12:21.24\00:12:24.75 me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my 00:12:24.78\00:12:28.41 father's house. And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; 00:12:28.44\00:12:33.88 but David and his men gat them up unto the hold. 00:12:33.91\00:12:37.99 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 25, 00:12:38.02\00:12:41.75 and this is the King James Version. 00:12:41.78\00:12:43.72 And Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered 00:12:43.75\00:12:47.74 together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house 00:12:47.77\00:12:51.26 at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness 00:12:51.29\00:12:55.12 of Paran. And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions 00:12:55.15\00:12:59.36 were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had 3,000 00:12:59.39\00:13:03.58 sheep and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep 00:13:03.61\00:13:06.28 in Carmel. Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of 00:13:06.31\00:13:11.04 his wife was Abigail: and she was a woman of good 00:13:11.07\00:13:15.03 understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: 00:13:15.06\00:13:17.87 but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; 00:13:17.90\00:13:21.49 and he was of the house of Caleb. And David heard in the 00:13:21.52\00:13:25.98 wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep. And David sent out 00:13:26.01\00:13:29.29 ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up 00:13:29.32\00:13:32.47 to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name: 00:13:32.50\00:13:35.35 And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, 00:13:35.38\00:13:39.07 Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house and peace be 00:13:39.10\00:13:43.88 unto all that thou hast. And now I have heard that thou hast 00:13:43.91\00:13:47.97 shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them 00:13:48.00\00:13:51.71 not, neither was there aught missing unto them, all 00:13:51.74\00:13:55.03 the while they were in Carmel. Ask thy young men, and 00:13:55.06\00:13:58.47 they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour 00:13:58.50\00:14:01.26 in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, 00:14:01.29\00:14:05.27 whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy 00:14:05.30\00:14:08.57 son David. And when David's young men came, they spake 00:14:08.60\00:14:12.61 to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, 00:14:12.64\00:14:15.32 and ceased. And Nabal answered David's servants, and said, 00:14:15.35\00:14:19.39 who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many 00:14:19.42\00:14:22.91 servants now a days that break away every man from his master. 00:14:22.94\00:14:26.04 Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I 00:14:26.07\00:14:29.39 have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, 00:14:29.42\00:14:31.93 whom I know not whence they be? 00:14:31.97\00:14:33.53
