Hello, and welcome back to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.90\00:00:19.27 I'm Kelly Mowrer and we're reading the story of David, 00:00:19.30\00:00:22.47 and King Saul. The Spirit of the Lord is upon David 00:00:22.50\00:00:25.83 since he behaves himself wisely and God is with him: 00:00:25.86\00:00:28.47 But God has withdrawn from Saul and Saul is very angry 00:00:28.50\00:00:32.39 with David and seeking to kill him. He has tried several times 00:00:32.42\00:00:36.24 but King Saul has two children who are on David's side. 00:00:36.27\00:00:40.07 Son Jonathan loved David and Saul's daughter, Michal, 00:00:40.10\00:00:44.45 was married to David. When we were last together we were 00:00:44.48\00:00:46.80 reading how Saul had sent men lying in wait at David's house, 00:00:46.83\00:00:50.80 and Michal helped David to escape and hides an image in 00:00:50.83\00:00:54.63 the bed to make it look as though David is in the bed, 00:00:54.66\00:00:56.89 resting. We're going to pick up that story now, But before we do 00:00:56.92\00:01:00.62 Let's pray together. Our Father thank you for bringing us 00:01:00.65\00:01:05.28 to this time and your presence. Please take the words that we 00:01:05.31\00:01:09.44 will read here and let us learn the lesson that you have 00:01:09.47\00:01:13.09 for each of us in our lives, so that we may behave ourselves 00:01:13.12\00:01:16.70 wisely as did David and be men and women after your heart. 00:01:16.73\00:01:20.29 We long to know you. Thank you for loving us. We love you. Amen 00:01:20.32\00:01:24.79 Picking up in 1 Samuel, chapter 19, verse 17. 00:01:24.82\00:01:30.26 And Saul said unto Michal, Why has thou deceived me so, 00:01:30.29\00:01:35.15 and sent away mine enemy, that he is escaped? 00:01:35.18\00:01:37.45 And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; 00:01:37.48\00:01:42.26 why should I kill thee? So David fled, and escaped, 00:01:42.29\00:01:47.68 and came to Samuel to Ramah, and told him all that Saul had 00:01:47.71\00:01:51.54 done to him. And he and Samuel went and dwelt in Naioth. 00:01:51.57\00:01:56.02 And it was told Saul, saying, Behold David is at Naioth 00:01:56.05\00:02:00.25 in Ramah. And Saul sent messengers to take David: 00:02:00.28\00:02:03.60 and when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, 00:02:03.63\00:02:07.21 and Samuel standing as appointed over them, the Spirit of God 00:02:07.24\00:02:11.31 was upon the messengers of Saul, and they also prophesied. 00:02:11.34\00:02:14.98 And when it was told Saul, he sent other messengers, 00:02:15.01\00:02:18.55 and they prophesied likewise. And Saul sent messengers again 00:02:18.58\00:02:23.06 the third time, and they prophesied also. 00:02:23.09\00:02:25.76 Then went he also to Ramah, and came to a great well 00:02:25.79\00:02:32.06 that is in Sechu: and he asked and said, Where are Samuel 00:02:32.09\00:02:37.41 and David? And one said, Behold they be at Naioth in Ramah. 00:02:37.44\00:02:43.17 And he went thither to Naioth in Ramah: and the spirit of God 00:02:43.20\00:02:46.88 was upon him also, and he went on, and prophesied, 00:02:46.91\00:02:50.28 until he came to Naioth in Ramah and he stripped off his clothes 00:02:50.31\00:02:54.39 also, and prophesied before Samuel in like manner, 00:02:54.42\00:02:57.21 and lay down naked all that day and all that night. 00:02:57.24\00:02:59.88 Wherefore they say, Is Saul also among the prophets? 00:02:59.91\00:03:04.72 Continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 20. 00:03:04.75\00:03:08.31 This is the King James Version. And David fled from Naioth 00:03:08.34\00:03:13.05 in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, 00:03:13.08\00:03:15.60 What have I done? what is mine iniquity? and what is my sin 00:03:15.63\00:03:20.29 before thy father, that he seeketh my life? And he said 00:03:20.32\00:03:24.32 unto him, God forbid; thou shalt die: behold, my father will do 00:03:24.35\00:03:29.58 nothing either great or small, but that will shew it me: 00:03:29.61\00:03:32.46 and why should my father hide this thing from me? it is not so 00:03:32.49\00:03:36.38 And David sware moreover, and said, Thy father certainly 00:03:36.41\00:03:40.68 knoweth that I have found grace in thine eyes; and he saith, 00:03:40.71\00:03:44.48 let not Jonathan know this, lest he be grieved: but truly 00:03:44.51\00:03:48.10 as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, there is but a step 00:03:48.13\00:03:51.60 between me and death. Then said Jonathan unto David, Whatsoever 00:03:51.63\00:03:56.66 thy soul desireth, I will even do it for thee. 00:03:56.69\00:03:59.47 And David said unto Jonathan, Behold, tomorrow is the new moon 00:03:59.50\00:04:04.84 and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: 00:04:04.87\00:04:08.45 but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field 00:04:08.48\00:04:11.99 unto the third day at even. If thy father at all miss me, 00:04:12.02\00:04:16.46 then say, David earnestly asked leave of me that he might run 00:04:16.49\00:04:21.04 to Bethlehem his city: for there is a yearly sacrifice 00:04:21.07\00:04:24.03 there for all the family. If he say thus, It is well; 00:04:24.06\00:04:28.67 thy servant shall have peace: but if be very wroth, 00:04:28.70\00:04:33.37 then be sure that evil is determined by him. 00:04:33.40\00:04:37.13 Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast 00:04:37.16\00:04:40.63 brought thy servant into a covenant of the Lord with thee: 00:04:40.66\00:04:43.42 notwithstanding, if there be in me iniquity, slay me thyself; 00:04:43.45\00:04:48.39 for why shouldest thou bring me to thy father? And Jonathan said 00:04:48.42\00:04:53.82 Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil 00:04:53.85\00:04:57.80 were determined by my father to come upon thee, 00:04:57.83\00:05:00.54 then would not I tell it thee? Then said David to Johathan, 00:05:00.57\00:05:05.60 Who shall tell me? or what if thy father answer thee roughly? 00:05:05.63\00:05:09.18 And Jonathan said unto David, Come, and let us go out 00:05:09.21\00:05:13.02 into the field. And they went out both of them into the field. 00:05:13.05\00:05:16.59 And Jonathan said unto David, O Lord God of Israel, 00:05:16.62\00:05:20.21 when I have sounded my father about tomorrow any time, 00:05:20.24\00:05:23.67 or the third day, and behold, if there be good toward David, 00:05:23.70\00:05:26.99 and I then send not unto thee, and shew it thee; The Lord do so 00:05:27.02\00:05:31.48 and much more to Jonathan: but if it please my father to 00:05:31.51\00:05:35.35 do thee evil, then I will shew it thee, and send thee away, 00:05:35.38\00:05:38.44 that thou mayest go in peace: And the Lord be with thee, 00:05:38.47\00:05:41.26 as he hath been with my father. And thou shalt not only 00:05:41.29\00:05:45.42 while yet I live shew me the kindness of the Lord, 00:05:45.45\00:05:48.32 that I die not; but also thou shalt not cut off thy kindness 00:05:48.35\00:05:52.34 from my house forever: no, not when the Lord hath cut off 00:05:52.37\00:05:56.31 the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth. 00:05:56.34\00:05:58.74 So Jonathan made a covenant with the house of David, saying, 00:05:58.77\00:06:03.13 Let the Lord even require it at the hand of David's enemies. 00:06:03.16\00:06:07.76 And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved 00:06:07.79\00:06:11.83 him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul. 00:06:11.86\00:06:14.88 Then Jonathan said to David, Tomorrow is the new moon: 00:06:14.91\00:06:18.61 and thou shalt be missed, because thy seat will be empty. 00:06:18.64\00:06:21.39 And when thou hast stayed three days, then thou shalt go down 00:06:21.42\00:06:25.30 quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself 00:06:25.33\00:06:27.98 when the business was in hand, and shalt remain by the stone, 00:06:28.01\00:06:31.79 Ezel. And I will shoot 3 arrows on the side thereof, as though 00:06:31.82\00:06:36.43 I shot at a mark. And, behold, I will send a lad, saying, Go, 00:06:36.46\00:06:41.60 find out the arrows. If I expressly say unto the lad, 00:06:41.63\00:06:45.69 behold the arrows are on this side of thee, take them; 00:06:45.72\00:06:49.02 then come thou: for there is peace to thee, and no hurt; 00:06:49.05\00:06:52.89 as the Lord liveth. But if I say thus unto the young man, 00:06:52.92\00:06:56.79 Behold the arrows are beyond thee; go thy way: for the Lord 00:06:56.82\00:07:00.59 hath sent thee away. And as touching the matter which thou 00:07:00.62\00:07:04.81 and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me 00:07:04.84\00:07:08.92 forever. So David hid himself in the field: 00:07:08.95\00:07:12.01 and when the new moon was come, the king sat him down 00:07:12.04\00:07:15.15 to eat meat. And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times 00:07:15.18\00:07:19.08 even upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner 00:07:19.11\00:07:24.33 sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty. Nevertheless 00:07:24.36\00:07:29.18 Saul spake not anything that day, for he thought something 00:07:29.21\00:07:33.26 had befallen him, He is not clean, surely, he is not clean. 00:07:33.29\00:07:36.53 And it came to pass on the morrow, which was the 2nd day 00:07:36.56\00:07:40.50 of the month, that David's place was empty: 00:07:40.53\00:07:42.38 And Saul said unto Jonathan, his son, Wherefore cometh not 00:07:42.41\00:07:46.22 the son of Jesse to meat, neither yesterday, nor today? 00:07:46.25\00:07:48.90 And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked leave of 00:07:48.93\00:07:53.70 me to go to Bethlehem: And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; 00:07:53.73\00:07:57.23 for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother, he 00:07:57.26\00:08:00.73 hath commanded me to be there: and now, if I have found favour 00:08:00.76\00:08:04.04 in thine eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, 00:08:04.07\00:08:05.62 and see my brethren, Therefore he cometh not unto the king's 00:08:05.65\00:08:09.31 table. Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, 00:08:09.34\00:08:14.32 and he said unto him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious woman 00:08:14.35\00:08:18.47 do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to 00:08:18.50\00:08:21.88 thine own confusion, and unto the confusion of thy mother's 00:08:21.91\00:08:24.84 nakedness? For as long as the son of Jesse 00:08:24.87\00:08:27.38 liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, 00:08:27.41\00:08:29.79 nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send an fetch him unto me, 00:08:29.82\00:08:33.53 for he shall surely die. And Jonathan answered Saul 00:08:33.56\00:08:38.00 his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? 00:08:38.03\00:08:41.73 What hath he done? And Saul cast a javelin at him 00:08:41.76\00:08:46.76 to smite him: whereby Jonathan knew that it was determined of 00:08:46.79\00:08:50.97 his father to slay David. So Jonathan arose from the table 00:08:51.00\00:08:54.78 in fierce anger, and did eat no meat the 2nd day of the month: 00:08:54.81\00:08:57.35 for he was grieved for David, because his father had done 00:08:57.38\00:09:00.88 him shame. And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan 00:09:00.91\00:09:04.66 went out into the field at the time appointed with David, 00:09:04.69\00:09:07.16 and a little lad with him. And he said unto his lad, 00:09:07.19\00:09:10.81 Run, find out now the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad 00:09:10.84\00:09:15.42 ran, he shot an arrow beyond him. And when the lad was come 00:09:15.45\00:09:19.43 to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, 00:09:19.46\00:09:21.31 Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, Is not the arrow 00:09:21.34\00:09:24.18 beyond thee? And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste 00:09:24.21\00:09:28.73 stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows 00:09:28.76\00:09:32.69 and came to his master. But the lad knew not anything: 00:09:32.72\00:09:36.29 only Jonathan and David knew the matter. And Jonathan gave his 00:09:36.32\00:09:41.22 artillery unto his lad, and said unto him, Go, carry them 00:09:41.25\00:09:44.87 to the city. And as soon as the lad was gone, David arose 00:09:44.90\00:09:48.94 out of a place toward the south, and fell on his face 00:09:48.97\00:09:52.50 to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed 00:09:52.53\00:09:56.44 one another and wept one with another, until David exceeded. 00:09:56.47\00:10:00.20 And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we 00:10:00.23\00:10:04.95 have sworn both of us in the name of the Lord, saying, 00:10:04.98\00:10:07.73 The Lord be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed 00:10:07.76\00:10:12.35 forever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan 00:10:12.38\00:10:15.75 went into the city. 00:10:15.78\00:10:17.04 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 21. 00:10:17.07\00:10:20.96 This is the King James Version. 00:10:20.99\00:10:22.36 Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: 00:10:22.39\00:10:28.65 and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto 00:10:28.68\00:10:32.00 him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee? And David said 00:10:32.03\00:10:37.13 unto Ahimilech the priest, The king hath commanded me 00:10:37.16\00:10:40.25 a business, and hath said unto me Let no man know anything 00:10:40.28\00:10:43.32 of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have 00:10:43.35\00:10:45.95 commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants 00:10:45.98\00:10:48.50 to such and such a place. Now therefore what is under thine 00:10:48.53\00:10:52.92 hand? give me 5 loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is 00:10:52.95\00:10:57.34 present. And the priest answered David, and said, 00:10:57.37\00:11:00.52 There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed 00:11:00.55\00:11:05.19 bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least 00:11:05.22\00:11:08.08 from women. And David answered the priest, and said unto him, 00:11:08.11\00:11:10.79 Of a truth women have been kept from us about these 3 days, 00:11:10.82\00:11:14.83 since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are 00:11:14.86\00:11:17.90 holy and the bread is in a manner common, yea 00:11:17.93\00:11:21.40 though it were sanctified this day in the vessel. 00:11:21.43\00:11:23.63 So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread 00:11:23.66\00:11:27.37 there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, 00:11:27.40\00:11:30.73 to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. 00:11:30.76\00:11:33.14 Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there 00:11:33.17\00:11:36.91 that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, 00:11:36.94\00:11:41.02 and Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul. 00:11:41.05\00:11:44.99 And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here 00:11:45.02\00:11:49.84 under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought 00:11:49.87\00:11:52.82 my sword nor my weapons with me because the king's business 00:11:52.85\00:11:55.52 required haste. And the priest said, The sword of Goliath 00:11:55.55\00:11:59.84 the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, 00:11:59.87\00:12:02.39 behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the Ephod: 00:12:02.42\00:12:06.41 if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that 00:12:06.44\00:12:10.41 here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me. 00:12:10.44\00:12:14.99 And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, 00:12:15.02\00:12:18.98 and went to Achish the king of Gath. And the servants of Achish 00:12:19.01\00:12:22.84 said unto them, Is not this David the king of the land? 00:12:22.87\00:12:25.97 Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, 00:12:26.00\00:12:29.86 Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands? 00:12:29.89\00:12:32.40 And David laid up these words in his heart and was sore afraid 00:12:32.43\00:12:36.43 of Achish the king of Gath. And he changed his behavior before 00:12:36.46\00:12:40.21 them and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled 00:12:40.24\00:12:44.12 on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon 00:12:44.15\00:12:46.95 his beard. Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man 00:12:46.98\00:12:52.01 is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me? 00:12:52.04\00:12:54.95 Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow 00:12:54.98\00:12:57.89 to play the mad man in my presence? 00:12:57.92\00:12:59.64 shall this fellow come into my house? 00:12:59.67\00:13:01.59 Continuing the story in 1 Samuel, chapter 22. 00:13:01.62\00:13:05.20 David therefore departed thence and escaped to the cave 00:13:05.23\00:13:09.17 of Adullum: and when his brethren and all his father's 00:13:09.20\00:13:12.03 house heard it, they went down thither to him.
