Hello, and welcome to His Words are Life. 00:00:15.39\00:00:17.60 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and we're reading to day in the book of 00:00:17.63\00:00:20.29 1st Samuel, the story of David and Goliath. The armies of the 00:00:20.32\00:00:24.44 Philistines and the armies of the Israelites are camped and 00:00:24.47\00:00:27.92 facing each other day by day. The great giant Goliath comes 00:00:27.95\00:00:32.48 out and taunts Israel-challenges them. And David's three older 00:00:32.51\00:00:36.82 brothers are serving in the army of Saul and he goes 00:00:36.85\00:00:39.48 to visit them and he hears Goliath, and he asks the people, 00:00:39.51\00:00:42.77 Why should this man, this uncircumcised man, challenge 00:00:42.80\00:00:47.30 the living God? and what shall be done to the man who goes 00:00:47.33\00:00:50.35 up against him? We'll pick up the story, but Let's pray first. 00:00:50.38\00:00:53.55 Dear Lord, as we face the issues in our lives that seem like 00:00:53.58\00:00:59.96 giant problems to us, may we learn a lesson from David's 00:00:59.99\00:01:03.85 faith in you and know that the living God has the answers that 00:01:03.88\00:01:07.63 we need. Please send your Spirit now as we read to show you the 00:01:07.66\00:01:11.11 answers you have for us today. We love you so much, and 00:01:11.14\00:01:14.04 thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:01:14.07\00:01:16.33 Picking up the story in first Samuel, chapter 17, verse 27, 00:01:16.36\00:01:20.70 this is the King James Version. The people answered him after 00:01:20.73\00:01:24.89 this manner saying, so shall it be done unto the man 00:01:24.92\00:01:27.45 that killeth him: and Eliab, the oldest brother, heard 00:01:27.48\00:01:32.11 when he spake unto the men. And Eliab's anger was kindled 00:01:32.14\00:01:35.40 against David. And he said, Why camest thou down hither? 00:01:35.43\00:01:38.76 And with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the 00:01:38.79\00:01:41.32 wilderness? I know thy pride and naughtiness of thy heart; 00:01:41.35\00:01:44.77 for thou art come down that thou mightest see the battle. 00:01:44.80\00:01:47.05 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? 00:01:47.08\00:01:51.72 And he turned from him toward another, and spake after the 00:01:51.75\00:01:55.18 same manner: and the people answered him again after the 00:01:55.21\00:01:57.67 former manner. And when the words were heard which David 00:01:57.70\00:02:01.78 spake, they rehearsed them before Saul and he sent for him. 00:02:01.81\00:02:05.71 And David said to Saul, Let no man's heart fail because of him; 00:02:05.74\00:02:11.38 Thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine. 00:02:11.41\00:02:14.08 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this 00:02:14.11\00:02:18.94 Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, 00:02:18.97\00:02:21.95 and he a man of war from his youth. And David said unto Saul, 00:02:21.98\00:02:26.64 Thy servant kept his father's sheep and there came a lion 00:02:26.67\00:02:29.84 and a bear and took a lamb out of the flock, and I went out 00:02:29.87\00:02:33.25 after him and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth. 00:02:33.28\00:02:36.30 And when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, 00:02:36.33\00:02:39.70 and smote him, and slew him. Thy servant slew both the lion 00:02:39.73\00:02:43.88 and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine 00:02:43.91\00:02:47.32 shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the 00:02:47.35\00:02:52.16 living God. David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out 00:02:52.19\00:02:57.72 of paw of the lion, & out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver 00:02:57.75\00:03:01.60 me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto 00:03:01.63\00:03:05.95 David, Go, and the Lord be with thee. And Saul armed David 00:03:05.98\00:03:10.93 with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; 00:03:10.96\00:03:14.05 also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword 00:03:14.08\00:03:17.47 upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. 00:03:17.50\00:03:21.07 And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; 00:03:21.10\00:03:24.48 for I have not proved them. And David took them off. 00:03:24.51\00:03:27.99 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth 00:03:28.02\00:03:32.36 stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag 00:03:32.39\00:03:35.24 which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: 00:03:35.27\00:03:39.81 and he drew near to the Philistine. 00:03:39.84\00:03:42.45 And the Philistine came on and drew near unto David; 00:03:42.48\00:03:45.99 And the man that bear the shield went before him. 00:03:46.02\00:03:48.64 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, 00:03:48.67\00:03:51.19 he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of 00:03:51.22\00:03:56.27 a fair countenance. And the Philistine said unto David, 00:03:56.30\00:03:59.85 Am I a dog, that thou comest to me with staves? 00:03:59.88\00:04:03.06 And the Philistine cursed David by his Gods. And the Philistine 00:04:03.09\00:04:07.98 said to David, Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the 00:04:08.01\00:04:10.83 fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 00:04:10.86\00:04:12.62 Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me 00:04:12.65\00:04:17.76 with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I am come 00:04:17.79\00:04:23.14 to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies 00:04:23.17\00:04:27.57 of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord 00:04:27.60\00:04:31.73 deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take 00:04:31.76\00:04:35.33 thine head from thee; and I will give the carcasses of the 00:04:35.36\00:04:37.85 host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, 00:04:37.88\00:04:40.99 and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth 00:04:41.02\00:04:43.79 may know that there is a God in Israel. 00:04:43.82\00:04:47.60 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not 00:04:47.63\00:04:52.16 with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord's, 00:04:52.19\00:04:55.99 and he will give you into our hands. 00:04:56.02\00:04:59.69 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came 00:04:59.72\00:05:03.63 and drew nigh to meet David, that David hasted, and ran 00:05:03.66\00:05:07.67 toward the army to meet the Philistine. And David put his 00:05:07.70\00:05:11.68 hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote 00:05:11.71\00:05:16.48 the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his 00:05:16.51\00:05:20.24 forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth. 00:05:20.27\00:05:22.46 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with 00:05:22.49\00:05:27.19 a stone, and smote the Philistine and slew him; 00:05:27.22\00:05:30.04 but there was no sword in the hand of David. Therefore David 00:05:30.07\00:05:34.23 ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, 00:05:34.26\00:05:37.24 and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, 00:05:37.27\00:05:40.38 and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw 00:05:40.41\00:05:44.98 their champion was dead, they fled. And the men of Israel 00:05:45.01\00:05:48.73 and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, 00:05:48.76\00:05:52.42 until thou come to the valley, and to the gates of Ekron. 00:05:52.45\00:05:55.40 And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the 00:05:55.43\00:05:58.09 way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath, and unto Ekron. 00:05:58.12\00:06:01.89 And the children of Israel returned from chasing after 00:06:01.92\00:06:05.25 the Philistines and they spoiled their tents. 00:06:05.28\00:06:07.14 And David took the head of the Philistine, and brought it to 00:06:07.17\00:06:10.22 Jerusalem; but he put his armour in his tent. And when Saul saw 00:06:10.25\00:06:16.50 David go forth against the Philistine, he said unto Abner, 00:06:16.53\00:06:20.01 the captain of the host, Abner, whose son is this youth? 00:06:20.04\00:06:23.74 And Abner said, As thy soul liveth, O king, I cannot tell. 00:06:23.77\00:06:28.23 And the king said, Inquire thou whose son the stripling is. 00:06:28.26\00:06:32.73 And as David returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, 00:06:32.76\00:06:36.54 Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head 00:06:36.57\00:06:39.24 of the Philistine in his hand. And Saul said to him, 00:06:39.27\00:06:42.30 Whose son art thou, thou young man? And David answered, 00:06:42.33\00:06:46.34 I am the son of thy servant Jesse the Bethlehemite. 00:06:46.37\00:06:49.71 We're continuing to read in 1st Samuel, chapter 18, 00:06:49.74\00:06:53.34 This is the King James Version. And it came to pass, when he 00:06:53.37\00:06:57.61 had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of 00:06:57.64\00:07:00.51 Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him 00:07:00.54\00:07:04.80 as his own soul. And Saul took him that day, and would let him 00:07:04.83\00:07:08.89 go no more home to his father's house. Then Jonathan and David 00:07:08.92\00:07:13.28 made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. 00:07:13.31\00:07:16.39 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was upon him, and 00:07:16.42\00:07:20.16 gave it to David, and his garments, even to his sword, 00:07:20.19\00:07:23.46 and to his bow, and to his girdle. And David went out 00:07:23.49\00:07:27.19 whithersoever Saul sent him, and behaved himself wisely: 00:07:27.22\00:07:31.49 And Saul set him over the men pf war, and he was accepted 00:07:31.52\00:07:35.66 in the sight of all the people, and also in the sight of Saul's 00:07:35.69\00:07:38.86 servants. And it came to pass as they came, when David was 00:07:38.89\00:07:42.91 returned from the slaughter of the Philistines, that the women 00:07:42.94\00:07:46.11 came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, 00:07:46.14\00:07:49.41 to meet king Saul, with tabrets with joy, and with instruments 00:07:49.44\00:07:53.27 of music. And the women answered one another 00:07:53.30\00:07:55.62 as they played, and said, Saul hath slain his thousands, 00:07:55.65\00:07:59.07 and David his ten thousands. And Saul was very wroth, 00:07:59.10\00:08:04.13 and the saying displeased him; and he said, They have ascribed 00:08:04.16\00:08:09.00 unto David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed 00:08:09.03\00:08:13.21 but thousands: and what can he have more but the kingdom? 00:08:13.24\00:08:17.49 And Saul eyed David from that day and forward. 00:08:17.52\00:08:22.91 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the evil spirit 00:08:22.94\00:08:26.59 from God came upon Saul, and he prophesied in the midst of 00:08:26.62\00:08:29.44 of the house; and David played with his hand as at other times: 00:08:29.47\00:08:33.13 and there was a javelin in Saul's hand. And Saul cast 00:08:33.16\00:08:36.81 the javelin; for he said, I will smite David even to the wall 00:08:36.84\00:08:40.56 with it. And David avoided out of his presence twice. 00:08:40.59\00:08:44.40 And Saul was afraid of David, because the Lord was with him, 00:08:44.43\00:08:48.26 and was departed from Saul. Therefore Saul removed him 00:08:48.29\00:08:53.19 from him, and made him a captain over a thousand; and he went out 00:08:53.22\00:08:56.15 and came in before the people. And David behaved himself wisely 00:08:56.18\00:09:01.18 in all his ways; and the Lord was with him. Wherefore 00:09:01.21\00:09:06.05 when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, 00:09:06.08\00:09:08.99 he was afraid of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David, 00:09:09.02\00:09:12.98 because he went out and came in before them. And Saul said to 00:09:13.01\00:09:17.57 David, Behold my elder daughter Merab, her will I give thee 00:09:17.60\00:09:22.60 to wife: only be thou valiant for me, and fight the Lord's 00:09:22.63\00:09:26.58 battles. For Saul said, Let not mine hand be upon him, 00:09:26.61\00:09:30.44 but let the hand of the Philistines be upon him. 00:09:30.47\00:09:32.62 And David said unto Saul, Who am I? and what is my life, 00:09:32.65\00:09:37.25 or my father's family in Israel, that I should be son in law 00:09:37.28\00:09:40.62 to the king? But it came to pass at the time when Merab, 00:09:40.65\00:09:45.08 Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, 00:09:45.11\00:09:47.04 that she was given unto Adriel, the Meholathite to wife. 00:09:47.07\00:09:52.11 And Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David: and they told Saul 00:09:52.14\00:09:56.50 and the thing pleased him. And Saul said, I will give him her, 00:09:56.53\00:09:59.90 that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the 00:09:59.93\00:10:03.52 Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, 00:10:03.55\00:10:07.38 Thou shalt this day be my son in law in the one of the twain. 00:10:07.41\00:10:11.52 And Saul commanded his servants, saying, Commune with David 00:10:11.55\00:10:15.95 secretly, and say, Behold the king hath delight in thee, 00:10:15.98\00:10:19.63 and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's 00:10:19.66\00:10:22.77 son in law. And Saul's servants spake these words in the ears of 00:10:22.80\00:10:27.36 David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be 00:10:27.39\00:10:32.37 a king's son in law, seeing that I am a poor man, 00:10:32.40\00:10:36.28 and lightly esteemed? And the servants of Saul told him, 00:10:36.31\00:10:40.58 saying, On this manner spake David. And Saul said, 00:10:40.61\00:10:45.21 Thus shall ye say to David, The king desireth not any dowry, 00:10:45.24\00:10:49.03 but an hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of 00:10:49.06\00:10:52.78 the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall 00:10:52.81\00:10:57.44 by the hand of the Philistines. And when his servants told 00:10:57.47\00:11:01.53 David these words, it pleased David well to be the king's 00:11:01.56\00:11:04.23 son in law: and the days were not expired. Wherefore David 00:11:04.26\00:11:08.09 arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines 00:11:08.12\00:11:11.69 two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, 00:11:11.72\00:11:15.16 and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be 00:11:15.19\00:11:18.42 the king's son in law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter 00:11:18.45\00:11:22.54 to wife. And Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, 00:11:22.57\00:11:27.50 and that Michal, Saul's daughter, loved him. 00:11:27.53\00:11:30.35 And Saul was yet the more afraid of David; and Saul became 00:11:30.38\00:11:34.42 David's enemy continually. Then the princes of the 00:11:34.45\00:11:38.53 Philistines went forth, and it came to pass, after they went 00:11:38.56\00:11:41.20 forth, that David behaved himself more wisely 00:11:41.23\00:11:45.08 than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by 00:11:45.11\00:11:49.76 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 19, 00:11:49.79\00:11:53.62 and this is the King James Version. 00:11:53.65\00:11:54.84 And Saul spake to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, 00:11:54.87\00:12:00.28 that they should kill David. But Jonathan, Saul's son 00:12:00.31\00:12:04.80 delighted much in David: and Jonathan told David, saying, 00:12:04.83\00:12:08.92 Saul my father seeketh to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee 00:12:08.95\00:12:12.37 take heed to thyself until the morning, and abide in a secret 00:12:12.40\00:12:15.91 place, and hide thyself: And I will go out and stand beside 00:12:15.94\00:12:19.69 my father in the field where thou art, and I will commune 00:12:19.72\00:12:23.32 with my father of thee; and what I see, that I will tell thee. 00:12:23.35\00:12:27.98 And Jonathan spake good of David unto Saul his father, 00:12:28.01\00:12:32.32 and said unto him, Let not the king sin against his servant, 00:12:32.35\00:12:35.88 against David; because he hath not sinned against thee, 00:12:35.91\00:12:38.80 and because his works have been to thee-ward very good: 00:12:38.83\00:12:42.46 For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, 00:12:42.49\00:12:45.91 and the Lord wrought a great salvation for all Israel: 00:12:45.94\00:12:48.63 thou sawest it, and didst rejoice: wherefore then 00:12:48.66\00:12:51.94 wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David 00:12:51.97\00:12:55.55 without a cause? And Saul hearkened unto the voice of 00:12:55.58\00:12:59.57 Jonathan: And Saul sware, As the Lord liveth, he shall not be 00:12:59.60\00:13:03.49 slain. And Jonathan called David and Jonathan shewed him 00:13:03.52\00:13:07.45 all those things. And Jonathan brought David to Saul, 00:13:07.48\00:13:10.90 and he was in his presence, as in times past. 00:13:10.93\00:13:14.06 And there was war again: and David went out, and fought 00:13:14.09\00:13:17.70 with the Philistines, and slew them with a great slaughter 00:13:17.73\00:13:20.29 and they fled from him. And the evil spirit from the Lord 00:13:20.32\00:13:24.43 was upon Saul, as he sat in his house with his javelin 00:13:24.46\00:13:27.24 in his hand: and David played with his hand. 00:13:27.27\00:13:29.32 And Saul sought to smite David even to the wall 00:13:29.35\00:13:32.39 with the javelin; but he slipped away out of 00:13:32.42\00:13:35.10 Saul's presence, and he smote the javelin into the wall: 00:13:35.13\00:13:38.15 and David fled, and escaped that night. Saul also sent messengers 00:13:38.18\00:13:43.79 unto David's house, to watch him and to slay him in the morning: 00:13:43.82\00:13:46.50 and Michal, David's wife told him, saying, If thou save not 00:13:46.53\00:13:50.73 thy life tonight, tomorrow thou shalt be slain. 00:13:50.76\00:13:54.27 So Michal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled 00:13:54.30\00:13:58.49 and escaped. And Michal took an image, and laid it in the bed, 00:13:58.52\00:14:01.63 and put a pillow of goats' hair for his bolster, and covered it 00:14:01.66\00:14:04.45 with a cloth. And when Saul sent messengers to take David, 00:14:04.48\00:14:08.07 she said, He is sick. And Saul sent the messengers again 00:14:08.10\00:14:11.90 to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, 00:14:11.93\00:14:14.58 that I may slay him. And when the messengers were come in, 00:14:14.61\00:14:18.06 behold there was an image in the bed, with a pillow of goat's 00:14:18.09\00:14:21.15 hair for his bolster.
