Hello and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE 00:00:18.26\00:00:20.14 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we are reading in the book of 00:00:20.17\00:00:22.91 1st Samuel. Saul has been appointed the first king 00:00:22.94\00:00:26.65 over Israel and the Philistines have come against Israel. 00:00:26.68\00:00:30.39 So the people have come together and they're very scared, 00:00:30.42\00:00:33.78 and they're waiting for Samuel the prophet to arrive, 00:00:33.81\00:00:36.87 but he doesn't arrive at the time that they're expecting 00:00:36.90\00:00:39.64 and so Saul takes it upon himself to offer a burnt 00:00:39.67\00:00:43.00 offering to the Lord. And then pretty much as soon as the 00:00:43.03\00:00:45.36 offering is finished, Samuel arrives and says to Saul, 00:00:45.39\00:00:48.67 What have you done? And so we're going to pick up the story 00:00:48.70\00:00:51.76 but before we start, let's pray together. 00:00:51.79\00:00:53.62 Dear Lord, please come and be with us now as we read your 00:00:53.65\00:00:58.58 word. Show us the lessons of these stories that you have 00:00:58.61\00:01:02.75 for each of us in our lives today; that we may serve you 00:01:02.78\00:01:06.12 better. We love you so much and thank you for loving us. 00:01:06.15\00:01:09.19 Amen. Picking up in 1st Samuel, chapter 13, with verse 12, and 00:01:09.22\00:01:16.04 Saul is answering Samuel's question: What have you done? 00:01:16.07\00:01:20.71 Therefore, said I, the Philistines will come down 00:01:20.74\00:01:24.11 now upon me to Gilgal and I have not made supplication 00:01:24.14\00:01:26.65 unto the Lord. I forced myself therefore and offered a burnt 00:01:26.68\00:01:30.76 offering. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: 00:01:30.79\00:01:35.35 thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord 00:01:35.38\00:01:37.79 thy God, which he commanded thee: for now would the Lord 00:01:37.82\00:01:41.22 have established thy kingdom upon Israel forever. 00:01:41.25\00:01:43.57 But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the Lord hath sought 00:01:43.60\00:01:48.23 him a man after his own heart, and the Lord hath commanded 00:01:48.26\00:01:51.24 him to be captain over his people, because thou hast not 00:01:51.27\00:01:54.61 kept that which the Lord commanded thee. 00:01:54.64\00:01:56.48 And Samuel arose, and gat him up from Gilgal unto Gibeah of 00:01:56.51\00:02:01.70 Benjamin. And Saul numbered the people that were present 00:02:01.73\00:02:05.03 with him, about 600 men. And Saul, and Jonathan his son, 00:02:05.06\00:02:09.06 and the people that were present with them, abode in Gibeah 00:02:09.09\00:02:12.26 of Benjamin: but the Philistines encamped in Michmash. 00:02:12.29\00:02:15.39 And the spoilers came out of the camp of the Philistines 00:02:15.42\00:02:18.74 in three companies: one company turned unto the way that leadeth 00:02:18.77\00:02:22.29 to Ophra unto the land of Shual: And another company turned 00:02:22.32\00:02:27.04 the way to Bethhoron: and another company turned 00:02:27.07\00:02:29.85 to the way of the border that looketh to the valley of Zeboim 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.73 toward the wilderness. Now there was no smith found throughout 00:02:32.76\00:02:36.34 all the land of Israel: for the Philistines said, 00:02:36.37\00:02:38.41 Lest the Hebrews make them swords and spears: 00:02:38.44\00:02:40.42 But all the Israelites went down to the Philistines, 00:02:40.45\00:02:43.35 to sharpen every man his share, and his coulter, and his axe, 00:02:43.38\00:02:47.37 and his mattock. Yet they had a file for the mattocks, 00:02:47.40\00:02:50.75 and for the coulters, and for the forks, and for the axes, 00:02:50.78\00:02:53.23 and to sharpen the goads. So it came to pass in the day of 00:02:53.26\00:02:57.07 battle, that there was neither sword nor spear found 00:02:57.10\00:03:00.64 in the hand of any of the people that were with Saul and Jonathan 00:03:00.67\00:03:03.61 but with Saul and with Jonathan his son was there found. 00:03:03.64\00:03:07.26 And the garrison of the Philistines went out 00:03:07.29\00:03:10.36 to the passage of Michmash. 00:03:10.39\00:03:12.03 We're continuing now, in 1st Samuel, chapter 14, 00:03:12.06\00:03:15.63 and this is the King James Version. 00:03:15.66\00:03:16.97 Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathan the son of Saul 00:03:17.00\00:03:22.60 said unto the young man that bare his armour, Come and let us 00:03:22.63\00:03:26.13 go over to the Philistines' garrison, that is on the other 00:03:26.16\00:03:28.70 side. But he told not his father. And Saul tarried 00:03:28.73\00:03:32.99 in the uttermost part of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree 00:03:33.02\00:03:36.54 which is in Migron: and the people that were with him 00:03:36.57\00:03:39.51 were about 600 men; and Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's 00:03:39.54\00:03:45.50 brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, 00:03:45.53\00:03:48.19 the Lord's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. 00:03:48.22\00:03:51.26 And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone. 00:03:51.29\00:03:54.52 And between the passages, by which Jonathan sought to go 00:03:54.55\00:03:58.46 over unto the Philistines' garrison, there was a sharp 00:03:58.49\00:04:01.94 rock on the one side, and a sharp rock on the other side: 00:04:01.97\00:04:05.20 and the name of the one was Bozez, and the name of the other 00:04:05.23\00:04:08.87 Seneh. The forefront of the one was situate northward 00:04:08.90\00:04:13.27 over against Michmash, and the other southward over against 00:04:13.30\00:04:17.39 Gibeah. And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, 00:04:17.42\00:04:21.56 Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these 00:04:21.59\00:04:24.83 uncircumcised: it may be that the Lord will work for us: 00:04:24.86\00:04:28.93 for there is no restraint to the Lord to save by many or by few. 00:04:28.96\00:04:33.64 And his armour bearer said unto him, Do all that is in thine 00:04:33.67\00:04:37.82 heart. Turn thee; behold I am with thee according to thy heart 00:04:37.85\00:04:43.12 Then said Jonathan, Behold, we will pass over 00:04:43.15\00:04:46.97 unto these men, and we will discover ourselves unto them. 00:04:47.00\00:04:49.64 If they say thus unto us, Tarry until we come to you; 00:04:49.67\00:04:54.28 then we will stand still in our place, and will not go up unto 00:04:54.31\00:04:58.80 them. But if they say thus, Come up unto us: then we will go up: 00:04:58.83\00:05:04.36 for the Lord hath delivered them into our hand: and this shall be 00:05:04.39\00:05:08.40 a sign unto us. And both of them discovered themselves 00:05:08.43\00:05:12.41 unto the garrison of the Philistines: and 00:05:12.44\00:05:14.01 the Philistines said, Behold the Hebrews come forth 00:05:14.04\00:05:16.80 out of the holes where they had hid themselves. 00:05:16.83\00:05:18.82 And the men of the garrison answered Jonathan 00:05:18.85\00:05:22.01 and his armour bearer, and said. Come up to us, and we will shew 00:05:22.04\00:05:25.43 you a thing. And Jonathan said unto his armour bearer, 00:05:25.46\00:05:29.00 Come up after me: for the Lord hath delivered them 00:05:29.03\00:05:31.74 into the hand of Israel. And Jonathan climbed up upon 00:05:31.77\00:05:35.67 his hands and upon his feet, and his armour bearer after him: 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.50 and they fell before Jonathan; and his armour bearer slew 00:05:39.53\00:05:43.92 after him. And that first slaughter, which Jonathan 00:05:43.95\00:05:47.52 and his armour bearer made, was about 20 men, within as it were 00:05:47.55\00:05:51.75 an half acre of land, which a yoke of oxen might plow. 00:05:51.78\00:05:55.04 And there was trembling in the host, in the field, and among 00:05:55.07\00:05:58.22 all the people: the garrison, and the spoilers, 00:05:58.25\00:06:00.98 they also trembled, and the earth quaked: 00:06:01.01\00:06:03.52 so it was a very great trembling. 00:06:03.55\00:06:05.83 And the watchmen of Saul in Gibeah of Benjamin looked; 00:06:05.86\00:06:09.24 and, behold, the multitude melted away, and they went 00:06:09.27\00:06:12.54 on beating down one another. Then said Saul unto the people 00:06:12.57\00:06:17.08 that were with him, Number now, and see who is gone from us. 00:06:17.11\00:06:20.52 And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armour 00:06:20.55\00:06:24.65 bearer were not there. And Saul said unto Ahiah, Bring hither 00:06:24.68\00:06:29.62 the ark of God. For the ark of God was at that time with 00:06:29.79\00:06:32.73 the children of Israel. And it came to pass while Saul talked 00:06:32.76\00:06:36.26 unto the priest, that the noise that was in the host of the 00:06:36.29\00:06:39.72 Philistines went on and increased. And Saul said unto 00:06:39.75\00:06:44.24 the priest, Withdraw thine hand. And Saul and all 00:06:44.27\00:06:48.10 the people that were with him, assembled themselves, 00:06:48.13\00:06:50.37 and they came to the battle: and behold, every man's sword 00:06:50.40\00:06:54.60 was against his fellow, and there was a very great 00:06:54.63\00:06:56.96 discomfiture. Moreover the Hebrews that were with the 00:06:56.99\00:07:00.94 Philistines before that time, which went up with them into 00:07:00.97\00:07:04.24 the camp from the country round about, even they 00:07:04.27\00:07:07.29 also turned to be with the Israelites that were with Saul 00:07:07.32\00:07:09.90 and Jonathan. Likewise all the men of Israel which had hid 00:07:09.93\00:07:14.40 themselves in mount Ephraim, when they heard that the 00:07:14.43\00:07:16.78 Philistines fled, even they also followed hard after them 00:07:16.81\00:07:20.48 in the battle. So the Lord saved Israel that day: and the battle 00:07:20.51\00:07:24.98 passed over unto Bethaven. And the men of Israel 00:07:25.02\00:07:28.11 were distressed that day: for Saul had adjured the people, 00:07:28.14\00:07:32.06 Cursed be the man that eateth any food until evening, 00:07:32.09\00:07:35.51 that I may be avenged on mine enemies. So none of the people 00:07:35.54\00:07:39.93 tasted any food. And all they of the land came to a wood; and 00:07:39.96\00:07:45.00 there was honey upon the ground. And when the people were come 00:07:45.03\00:07:48.29 into the wood, behold the honey dropped; but no man put his 00:07:48.32\00:07:52.11 hand to his mouth: for the people feared the oath. 00:07:52.14\00:07:54.74 But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people 00:07:54.77\00:07:59.17 with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod 00:07:59.20\00:08:02.72 that was in his hand and dipped it in an honey-comb. 00:08:02.75\00:08:05.77 and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened. 00:08:05.80\00:08:08.84 Then answered one of the people, and said, Thy father straitly 00:08:08.87\00:08:13.00 charged the people with an oath, saying, Cursed be the man that 00:08:13.03\00:08:16.37 eateth any food this day. And the people were faint. 00:08:16.40\00:08:19.27 Then said Jonathan, My father hath troubled the land: see, 00:08:19.30\00:08:24.59 I pray you, how mine eyes have been enlightened, because I 00:08:24.62\00:08:26.95 tasted a little of this honey. How much more, if haply 00:08:26.98\00:08:30.79 the people had eaten freely today of the spoil of their 00:08:30.82\00:08:33.90 enemies which they found? for had there not been now a much 00:08:33.93\00:08:37.37 greater slaughter among the Philistines? And they smote 00:08:37.40\00:08:40.78 the Philistines that day from Michmash to Aijalon: 00:08:40.81\00:08:44.26 and the people were very faint. And the people flew upon 00:08:44.29\00:08:48.62 the spoil, and took sheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew them 00:08:48.65\00:08:52.25 on the ground: and the people did eat them with the blood. 00:08:52.28\00:08:55.42 Then they told Saul, saying, Behold, the people sin 00:08:55.45\00:08:59.43 against the Lord, in that they eat with the blood. And he said, 00:08:59.46\00:09:03.55 Ye have transgressed: roll a great stone unto me this day. 00:09:03.58\00:09:07.27 And Saul said, Disperse yourselves among the people, 00:09:07.30\00:09:10.99 and say unto them, Bring me hither every man his ox, 00:09:11.02\00:09:14.97 and every man his sheep, and slay them here, and eat; 00:09:15.00\00:09:18.76 and sin not against the Lord in eating with the blood. 00:09:18.79\00:09:21.51 And all the people brought every man his ox with him 00:09:21.54\00:09:25.22 that night, and slew them there. And Saul built an altar 00:09:25.25\00:09:29.10 unto the Lord: the same was the first altar that he built 00:09:29.13\00:09:32.43 unto the Lord. And Saul said, Let us go down 00:09:32.46\00:09:35.14 after the Philistines by night, and spoil them until the morning 00:09:35.17\00:09:38.75 light, and let us not leave a man of them. And they said, 00:09:38.78\00:09:42.41 Do whatsoever seemeth good unto thee. Then said the priest, 00:09:42.44\00:09:47.18 Let us draw near hither unto God. And Saul asked counsel 00:09:47.21\00:09:52.58 of God, Shall I go down after the Philistines? wilt thou 00:09:52.61\00:09:56.12 deliver them into the hand of Israel? But he answered him not 00:09:56.15\00:10:00.29 that day. And Saul said, Draw ye near hither, all the chief 00:10:00.32\00:10:05.75 of the people: and know and see wherein this sin hath been 00:10:05.78\00:10:09.15 this day. For, as the Lord liveth, which saveth Israel, 00:10:09.18\00:10:12.19 though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die. 00:10:12.22\00:10:15.39 But there was not a man among all the people that answered him 00:10:15.42\00:10:19.55 Then said he unto all Israel, Be ye on one side, 00:10:19.58\00:10:24.30 and I and Jonathan my son will be on the other side. 00:10:24.33\00:10:27.47 And the people said unto Saul, Do what seemeth good unto thee. 00:10:27.50\00:10:31.99 Therefore Saul said unto the Lord God of Israel, 00:10:32.02\00:10:35.34 Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: 00:10:35.37\00:10:40.19 but the people escaped. And Saul said, Cast lots between me 00:10:40.22\00:10:45.72 and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken: 00:10:45.75\00:10:49.20 Then Saul said to Jonathan, Tell me what thou hast done. 00:10:49.23\00:10:53.62 And Jonathan told him, and said, I did but taste a little honey 00:10:53.65\00:10:58.33 with the end of the rod that was in my hand, and lo, I must die. 00:10:58.36\00:11:02.86 And Saul answered, God do so and more also: for thou shalt 00:11:02.89\00:11:07.63 surely die, Jonathan. And the people said unto Saul, 00:11:07.66\00:11:11.61 Shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation 00:11:11.64\00:11:15.18 in Israel? God forbid: as the Lord liveth, there shall not 00:11:15.21\00:11:19.75 one hair of his head fall to the ground: for he hath wrought 00:11:19.78\00:11:22.85 with God this day. So the people rescued Jonathan, 00:11:22.88\00:11:26.85 that he died not. Then Saul went up from following 00:11:26.88\00:11:31.19 the Philistines: and the Philistines went to their 00:11:31.22\00:11:33.83 own place. So Saul took the kingdom over Israel, 00:11:33.86\00:11:37.05 and fought against all his enemies on every side, 00:11:37.08\00:11:39.87 against Moab, and against the children of Ammon, and 00:11:39.90\00:11:42.58 against Edom, and against the kings of Zobah, and against the 00:11:42.61\00:11:45.66 Philistines: and whithersoever he turned himself he vexed them. 00:11:45.69\00:11:49.83 And he gathered an host, and smote the Amalekites, 00:11:49.86\00:11:52.66 and delivered Israel out of the hands of them 00:11:52.69\00:11:54.65 that spoiled them. Now the sons of Saul were Jonathan, and Ishui 00:11:54.68\00:12:00.19 and Melchishua: and the names of his two daughters were these; 00:12:00.22\00:12:04.31 the name of the firstborn Merab, and the name of the younger 00:12:04.34\00:12:08.48 Michal: And the name of Saul's wife was Ahinoam, the daughter 00:12:08.51\00:12:13.49 of Ahimaaz; and the name of the captain of his host 00:12:13.52\00:12:17.29 was Abner, the son of Ner, Saul's uncle. And Kish 00:12:17.32\00:12:21.18 was the father of Saul; and Ner the father of Abner 00:12:21.21\00:12:25.01 was the son of Abiel. And there was sore war against the 00:12:25.04\00:12:29.72 Philistines all the days of Saul: and when Saul saw 00:12:29.75\00:12:34.55 any strong man, or any valiant man, he took him unto him. 00:12:34.58\00:12:39.60 We're continuing now in 1st Samuel, chapter 15, 00:12:39.63\00:12:45.14 this is the King James Version. 00:12:45.17\00:12:46.68 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee 00:12:46.71\00:12:52.62 to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore 00:12:52.65\00:12:56.27 hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord. 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.64 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek 00:12:59.67\00:13:03.88 did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, 00:13:03.91\00:13:06.92 when ye came up from Egypt. Now go and smite Amalek, 00:13:06.95\00:13:11.06 and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; 00:13:11.09\00:13:14.83 but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, 00:13:14.86\00:13:19.42 ox and sheep, camel and ass. And Saul gathered the people 00:13:19.45\00:13:25.38 together, and numbered them in Telaim, 200, 0000 footmen, 00:13:25.41\00:13:29.55 and 10,000 men of Judah. And Saul came to a city of Amalek, 00:13:29.58\00:13:34.39 and laid wait in the valley. And Saul said unto the Kenites, 00:13:34.42\00:13:38.31 Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, 00:13:38.34\00:13:42.34 lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness 00:13:42.37\00:13:45.96 to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. 00:13:45.99\00:13:48.66 So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites. 00:13:48.69\00:13:52.28 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest 00:13:52.31\00:13:58.04 to Shur, that is over against Egypt. And he took Agag 00:13:58.07\00:14:02.56 the king of the Amalekites alive and utterly destroyed all 00:14:02.59\00:14:07.14 the people with the edge of the sword. But Saul and the people 00:14:07.17\00:14:10.97 spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of 00:14:11.00\00:14:16.59 the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not 00:14:16.62\00:14:20.99 utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, 00:14:21.02\00:14:25.57 that they destroyed utterly. 00:14:25.60\00:14:28.08 Thank you for being with me today; until we come together 00:14:28.11\00:14:32.27 again, may God keep you. Goodbye. 00:14:32.30\00:14:34.27
