Hello, and welcome to His words are life. 00:00:18.22\00:00:20.81 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're reading in 1st Samuel, 00:00:20.84\00:00:24.33 about God and how he spoke to and through the prophet Samuel. 00:00:24.36\00:00:29.74 Before we pick up the story, let's pray. 00:00:29.77\00:00:32.73 Dear God, thank you for all the ways that you have spoken 00:00:32.76\00:00:36.82 to your people down through history. 00:00:36.85\00:00:39.07 And now please come be with us and speak to our hearts; 00:00:39.10\00:00:42.63 so that your words may bring us abundant life 00:00:42.66\00:00:46.00 and bear abundant fruit. We love you so much and thank you 00:00:46.03\00:00:49.38 for loving us. Amen. We're picking up in 1st Samuel 00:00:49.41\00:00:53.66 chapter 3. And as the young boy serving in the temple under Eli, 00:00:53.69\00:00:57.83 Samuel, one night hears who he thinks is Eli calling to him 00:00:57.86\00:01:03.27 and twice, so far, he has run to Eli, saying, Here am I. 00:01:03.30\00:01:07.48 And Eli had told him, I haven't been calling you. 00:01:07.51\00:01:11.01 And now we pick up in chapter three, beginning with verse 7, 00:01:11.04\00:01:16.20 this is the King James Version. 00:01:16.23\00:01:18.03 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, neither was the word 00:01:18.06\00:01:23.85 of the Lord yet revealed unto him. And the Lord called Samuel 00:01:23.88\00:01:28.10 again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, 00:01:28.13\00:01:33.13 and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. 00:01:33.16\00:01:37.47 And Eli perceived that the Lord had called the child. 00:01:37.50\00:01:41.81 Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, 00:01:41.84\00:01:47.38 if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, Lord; 00:01:47.41\00:01:50.88 for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down 00:01:50.91\00:01:55.91 in his place. And the Lord came, and stood, and called 00:01:55.94\00:01:59.94 as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, 00:01:59.97\00:02:06.97 Speak, for thy servant heareth. And the Lord said to Samuel, 00:02:07.00\00:02:11.61 Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears 00:02:11.64\00:02:16.53 of every one that heareth it shall tingle. In that day, 00:02:16.56\00:02:20.39 I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken 00:02:20.42\00:02:24.95 concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. 00:02:24.98\00:02:29.16 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever 00:02:29.19\00:02:33.55 for the iniquity which he knoweth. Because his sons 00:02:33.58\00:02:38.32 made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. 00:02:38.35\00:02:42.24 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, 00:02:42.27\00:02:45.99 that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged 00:02:46.02\00:02:49.72 with sacrifice nor offering for ever. 00:02:49.75\00:02:53.44 And Samuel lay until the morning and opened the doors 00:02:53.47\00:02:57.09 of the house of the Lord. And Samuel feared to shew Eli 00:02:57.12\00:03:00.75 the vision. Then Eli called Samuel, and said, 00:03:00.78\00:03:04.34 Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. And he said, 00:03:04.37\00:03:09.79 What is the thing that the Lord hath said unto thee? I pray thee 00:03:09.82\00:03:14.78 hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, 00:03:14.81\00:03:18.88 if thou hide anything from me of all the things that he said 00:03:18.91\00:03:21.65 unto thee. And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing 00:03:21.68\00:03:26.01 from him. And he said, It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth 00:03:26.04\00:03:32.20 him good. And Samuel grew, and the Lord was with him, 00:03:32.23\00:03:36.54 and did let none of his words fall to the ground. 00:03:36.57\00:03:40.52 And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel 00:03:40.55\00:03:45.96 was established to be a prophet of the Lord. And the Lord 00:03:45.99\00:03:50.69 appeared again in Shiloh: for the Lord revealed himself to 00:03:50.72\00:03:53.34 Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord. 00:03:53.37\00:03:57.08 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 4. 00:03:57.11\00:03:59.53 This is the King James Version. 00:03:59.56\00:04:01.30 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out 00:04:01.33\00:04:06.53 against the Philistines to battle and pitched beside 00:04:06.56\00:04:09.29 Ebenezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek. 00:04:09.32\00:04:11.85 And the Philistines put them selves in array against Israel 00:04:11.88\00:04:16.11 and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the 00:04:16.14\00:04:19.13 Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field 00:04:19.16\00:04:21.86 about 4,000 men. And when the people were come into the camp, 00:04:21.89\00:04:26.33 the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord 00:04:26.36\00:04:29.17 smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch 00:04:29.20\00:04:32.51 the ark of the covenant of the Lord out of Shiloh unto us, 00:04:32.54\00:04:35.82 that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand 00:04:35.85\00:04:39.82 of our enemies. So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might 00:04:39.85\00:04:43.89 bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts 00:04:43.92\00:04:46.87 which dwelleth between the cherubins: and the two sons 00:04:46.90\00:04:50.37 of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark 00:04:50.40\00:04:53.17 of the covenant of God. And when the ark of the covenant of 00:04:53.20\00:04:56.43 the Lord came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great 00:04:56.46\00:05:00.10 shout, so that the earth rang again. And when the Philistines 00:05:00.13\00:05:04.04 heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth 00:05:04.07\00:05:06.47 the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? 00:05:06.50\00:05:08.78 And they understood that the ark of the Lord was come into 00:05:08.81\00:05:12.64 the camp. And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, 00:05:12.67\00:05:15.72 God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! 00:05:15.75\00:05:18.65 for there hath not been such a thing heretofore. Woe unto us! 00:05:18.68\00:05:22.64 Who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? 00:05:22.67\00:05:25.87 These are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the 00:05:25.90\00:05:28.68 plagues in the wilderness. Be strong, and quit yourselves 00:05:28.71\00:05:31.76 like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants 00:05:31.79\00:05:34.53 unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves 00:05:34.56\00:05:37.32 like men, and fight. And the Philistines fought, and Israel 00:05:37.35\00:05:41.24 was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: 00:05:41.27\00:05:44.76 and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of 00:05:44.79\00:05:48.78 Israel 30,000 footmen. And the ark of God was taken; 00:05:48.81\00:05:53.42 and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain. 00:05:53.45\00:05:57.67 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to 00:05:57.70\00:06:01.53 Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth 00:06:01.56\00:06:05.07 upon his head. And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat 00:06:05.10\00:06:10.09 by the wayside watching: for for his heart trembled 00:06:10.12\00:06:13.34 for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, 00:06:13.37\00:06:16.94 and old it, all the city cried out. And when Eli heard the 00:06:16.97\00:06:21.67 noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this 00:06:21.70\00:06:23.69 tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli. 00:06:23.72\00:06:27.43 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim 00:06:27.46\00:06:32.57 that he could not see. And the man said unto Eli, I am he 00:06:32.60\00:06:38.10 that came out of the army, and I fled today out of the army. 00:06:38.13\00:06:41.45 And he said, What is there done, my son? And the messenger 00:06:41.48\00:06:45.81 answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, 00:06:45.84\00:06:48.59 and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people 00:06:48.62\00:06:53.10 and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, 00:06:53.13\00:06:56.40 and the ark of God is taken. And it came to pass, when he made 00:06:56.43\00:07:02.47 mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat 00:07:02.50\00:07:06.84 backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake 00:07:06.87\00:07:10.19 and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. 00:07:10.22\00:07:13.79 And he had judged Israel forty years. And his daughter in law, 00:07:13.82\00:07:18.94 Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: 00:07:18.97\00:07:21.97 and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, 00:07:22.00\00:07:25.84 and that her father in law and her husband were dead, 00:07:25.87\00:07:28.46 she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her. 00:07:28.49\00:07:33.00 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her 00:07:33.03\00:07:37.49 said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast borne a son. 00:07:37.52\00:07:40.85 But she answered not, neither did she regard it. 00:07:40.88\00:07:44.50 And she named the child Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed 00:07:44.53\00:07:49.50 from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of 00:07:49.53\00:07:53.58 her father in law and her husband. And she said, 00:07:53.61\00:07:57.34 The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God 00:07:57.37\00:08:00.51 is taken. - Continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter 5, 00:08:00.54\00:08:05.46 This is the King James Version. 00:08:05.49\00:08:07.02 And the Philistines took the ark of God and brought it from 00:08:07.05\00:08:12.29 Ebenezer unto Ashdod. When the Philistines took the ark of God, 00:08:12.32\00:08:16.74 they brought it into the house of Dagon, and set it by Dagon. 00:08:16.77\00:08:20.67 And when they of Ashdod arose early on the morrow, behold, 00:08:20.70\00:08:25.65 Dagon was fallen upon his face to the earth before the ark 00:08:25.68\00:08:30.24 of the Lord. And they took Dagon, and set him in his place 00:08:30.27\00:08:33.62 again. And when they arose early on the morrow morning, 00:08:33.65\00:08:37.16 behold, Dagon was fallen upon his face to the ground before 00:08:37.19\00:08:40.57 the ark of the Lord; and the head of Dagon and both the palms 00:08:40.60\00:08:44.32 of his hands were cut off upon the threshold; only the stump of 00:08:44.35\00:08:48.48 of Dagon was left to him. Therefore neither the priests 00:08:48.51\00:08:52.46 of Dagon, nor any that come into Dagon's house, 00:08:52.49\00:08:55.13 tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod unto this day. 00:08:55.16\00:08:59.45 But the had of the Lord was heavy upon them of Ashdod, 00:08:59.48\00:09:03.69 and he destroyed them, and smote them with emerods, 00:09:03.72\00:09:07.09 even Ashdod and the coasts thereof. And when the men of 00:09:07.12\00:09:11.40 Ashdod saw that it was so, they said, The ark of the God of 00:09:11.43\00:09:15.51 Israel shall not abide with us, for his hand is sore upon us, 00:09:15.54\00:09:19.62 and upon Dagon our god. And they sent therefore and gathered all 00:09:19.65\00:09:24.42 the lords of the Philistines unto them and said, What shall 00:09:24.45\00:09:26.99 we do with the ark of the God of Israel? And they answered, 00:09:27.02\00:09:31.05 Let the ark of the God of Israel be carried about unto Gath. 00:09:31.08\00:09:35.56 And they carried the ark of the God of Israel about thither. 00:09:35.59\00:09:39.67 And it was so that after they had carried it about, 00:09:39.70\00:09:42.80 the hand of the Lord was against the city with a very great 00:09:42.83\00:09:47.02 destruction: and he smote the men of the city, both small 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.29 and great, and they had emerods in their secret parts. 00:09:50.32\00:09:53.98 Therefore they sent the ark of God to Ekron. 00:09:54.01\00:09:58.00 And it came to pass, as the ark of God came to Ekron, 00:09:58.03\00:10:01.16 that the Ekronites cried out, saying, They have brought 00:10:01.19\00:10:03.95 about the ark of the God of Israel to us, to slay us 00:10:03.98\00:10:06.77 and our people. So they sent and gathered together 00:10:06.80\00:10:10.51 all the lords of the Philistines, and said, 00:10:10.54\00:10:12.93 Send away the ark of the God of Israel, and let it go again 00:10:12.96\00:10:16.16 to his own place, that it slay us not, and our people: 00:10:16.19\00:10:19.85 for there was a deadly destruction throughout all the 00:10:19.88\00:10:21.87 city; the hand of God was very heavy there. And the men 00:10:21.90\00:10:26.09 that died not were smitten with the emerods: 00:10:26.12\00:10:28.04 and the cry of the city went up to heaven. 00:10:28.07\00:10:30.74 We're continuing in 1st Samuel, chapter six. 00:10:30.77\00:10:34.28 And the ark of the lord was in the country of the Philistines 00:10:34.31\00:10:38.36 seven months. And the Philistines called 00:10:38.39\00:10:40.90 for the priests and the diviners, saying, What shall 00:10:40.93\00:10:43.79 we do to the ark of the Lord? tells us wherewith we shall 00:10:43.82\00:10:46.24 sent it to his place. And they said, If ye send away the ark 00:10:46.27\00:10:50.17 of the God of Israel, send it not empty; but in any wise 00:10:50.20\00:10:53.91 return him a trespass offering: then ye shall be healed, 00:10:53.94\00:10:57.37 and it shall be known to you, why his hand is not removed 00:10:57.40\00:11:00.47 from you. Then said they, What shall be the trespass offering 00:11:00.50\00:11:05.10 which we shall return to him? They answered, 5 golden emerods, 00:11:05.13\00:11:10.78 and 5 golden mice, according to the number of the lords 00:11:10.81\00:11:14.29 of the Philistines: for one plague was on you all, 00:11:14.32\00:11:17.43 and on your lords. Wherefore ye shall make images 00:11:17.46\00:11:21.84 of your emerods, and images of your mice that mar the land; 00:11:21.87\00:11:25.37 and ye shall give glory unto the God of Israel: peradventrure he 00:11:25.40\00:11:29.67 will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, 00:11:29.70\00:11:33.44 and from off your land. Wherefore then do ye 00:11:33.47\00:11:36.77 harden you hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh 00:11:36.80\00:11:39.90 hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully 00:11:39.93\00:11:43.42 among them, did they not let the people go and they departed? 00:11:43.45\00:11:46.45 Now therefore make a new cart, and take two milch kine, 00:11:46.48\00:11:52.40 on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine 00:11:52.43\00:11:56.23 to the cart, and bring their calves home from them: 00:11:56.26\00:11:59.29 And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart: 00:11:59.32\00:12:02.55 and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him 00:12:02.58\00:12:05.39 for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; 00:12:05.42\00:12:09.04 and sent it away, that it may go. And see, if it goeth up 00:12:09.07\00:12:14.04 by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath 00:12:14.07\00:12:17.21 done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know 00:12:17.24\00:12:20.03 that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance 00:12:20.06\00:12:23.40 that happened to us. And the men did so; and took 2 milch kine, 00:12:23.43\00:12:28.04 and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: 00:12:28.07\00:12:30.66 And they laid the ark of the Lord upon the cart, 00:12:30.69\00:12:33.91 and the coffer with the mice of gold and the images of their 00:12:33.94\00:12:37.20 emerods. And the kine took the straight way to the way of 00:12:37.23\00:12:42.05 Bethshemesh. And went along the highway, lowing as they went, 00:12:42.08\00:12:45.93 and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; 00:12:45.96\00:12:49.22 and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border 00:12:49.25\00:12:53.07 of Bethshemesh.
