Hello, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE 00:00:16.86\00:00:18.83 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for joining with me today, 00:00:18.86\00:00:21.47 to read the story of Ruth. Before we start, Let's pray. 00:00:21.50\00:00:25.34 Dear God, thank you again for this time apart in your presence 00:00:25.37\00:00:29.87 Please send the Holy Spirit as we read, to show us your 00:00:29.90\00:00:33.78 great love for us and to put into our hearts 00:00:33.81\00:00:36.92 a greater love for you. We love you, as imperfectly as we do, 00:00:36.95\00:00:41.83 and we want to serve you better, please show us how. Amen. 00:00:41.86\00:00:45.57 Reading in the book of Ruth, in the King James Version, 00:00:46.18\00:00:49.97 chapter 1. - Now it came to pass in the days when the judges 00:00:50.00\00:00:54.77 ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man 00:00:54.91\00:00:58.72 of Bethlehem-judah went to sojourn in the country of Moab, 00:00:58.75\00:01:02.30 he, and his wife, and his two sons. And the name of the man 00:01:02.33\00:01:06.33 was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, 00:01:06.38\00:01:09.98 and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, 00:01:10.01\00:01:14.17 Ephrathites of Bethlehem-judah. And they came into the country 00:01:14.23\00:01:19.38 of Moab, and continued there. And Elimelech, Naomi's husband, 00:01:19.46\00:01:23.24 died; and she was left, and her two sons. 00:01:23.27\00:01:25.05 And they took them wives of the women of Moab; 00:01:25.08\00:01:29.08 the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other, Ruth: 00:01:29.50\00:01:33.09 and they dwelled there about ten years. 00:01:33.12\00:01:35.71 And Mahlon and Chilion died, both of them; 00:01:35.74\00:01:40.62 and the woman was left of her two sons and her husband. 00:01:40.65\00:01:44.10 Then she arose with her daughters in law, 00:01:44.13\00:01:47.66 that she might return from the country of Moab: 00:01:47.69\00:01:50.39 for she had heard in the country of Moab how that the Lord 00:01:50.42\00:01:53.89 had visited his people in giving them bread. 00:01:53.92\00:01:56.11 Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, 00:01:56.14\00:01:59.58 and her two daughters in law with her; and they went 00:01:59.61\00:02:02.45 on the way to return unto the land of Judah. 00:02:02.48\00:02:05.76 And Naomi said unto her two daughters in law, 00:02:05.79\00:02:09.79 Go, return each to her mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with 00:02:09.92\00:02:15.64 you as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. 00:02:15.68\00:02:18.66 The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you, 00:02:18.69\00:02:23.42 in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; 00:02:23.45\00:02:26.68 and they lifted up their voice, and wept and they said unto her, 00:02:26.71\00:02:30.95 surely we will return with thee unto thy people. 00:02:30.98\00:02:34.17 And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: 00:02:34.20\00:02:38.02 why will ye go with me? Are there yet any more sons 00:02:38.05\00:02:42.03 in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Turn again, my 00:02:42.20\00:02:46.15 daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. 00:02:46.18\00:02:50.42 If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband 00:02:50.45\00:02:54.58 also tonight, and should also bear sons; would ye tarry 00:02:54.63\00:02:58.63 for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them 00:02:58.76\00:03:01.79 having husbands? nay, my daughters. 00:03:01.82\00:03:04.43 for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the 00:03:04.46\00:03:08.06 Lord is gone out against me. And they lifted up their voice, 00:03:08.09\00:03:11.69 and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; 00:03:11.72\00:03:16.29 but Ruth clave unto her. And she said, Behold thy sister in law 00:03:16.36\00:03:23.50 is gone back unto her people, and to her gods: return thou 00:03:23.54\00:03:27.50 after thy sister in law. And Ruth said, Entreat me not 00:03:27.60\00:03:33.43 to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: 00:03:33.46\00:03:37.04 for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, 00:03:37.07\00:03:41.83 I will lodge: thy people shall be my people and thy God my God: 00:03:41.86\00:03:48.21 where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: 00:03:48.24\00:03:52.90 the Lord do so to me, and more also, if aught but death 00:03:52.94\00:03:57.61 part thee and me. When she saw that she was steadfastly minded 00:03:57.65\00:04:03.98 to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. 00:04:04.01\00:04:07.16 So they two went until they came to Bethlehem, 00:04:07.19\00:04:10.73 And it came to pass, when they were come to Bethlehem, 00:04:10.76\00:04:13.21 that all the city was moved about them, and they said, 00:04:13.24\00:04:16.40 Is this Naomi? And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, 00:04:16.43\00:04:20.72 call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me 00:04:20.75\00:04:24.61 I went out full, and the Lord hath brought me home again 00:04:24.74\00:04:27.44 empty why then call ye me Naomi, seeing the Lord hath testified 00:04:27.47\00:04:32.24 against me and the Almighty has afflicted me? So Naomi returned 00:04:32.27\00:04:36.37 and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter in law, with her, 00:04:36.40\00:04:39.06 which returned out of the country of Moab, 00:04:39.09\00:04:40.93 and they came to Bethlehem in the beginning of barley harvest. 00:04:40.96\00:04:45.37 We're reading in Ruth chapter 2, 00:04:45.40\00:04:47.99 and this is the King James Version. 00:04:48.02\00:04:49.36 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's a mighty man of wealth 00:04:49.39\00:04:53.39 of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. 00:04:53.78\00:04:56.06 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, 00:04:56.09\00:04:59.18 Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn after him 00:04:59.21\00:05:03.21 in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, 00:05:03.25\00:05:07.25 Go my daughter. And she went, and came, and gleaned 00:05:07.43\00:05:11.11 in the field after the reapers: and her hap was to light on 00:05:11.14\00:05:14.58 a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was 00:05:14.61\00:05:17.24 of the kindred of Elimelech. And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem 00:05:17.27\00:05:21.18 and said unto the reapers, The Lord be with you. 00:05:21.21\00:05:23.43 And they answered him, The Lord bless thee. 00:05:23.46\00:05:26.09 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, 00:05:26.12\00:05:30.30 Whose damsel is this? And the servant that was set over 00:05:30.33\00:05:33.91 the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabitish damsel 00:05:33.94\00:05:37.01 that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab: 00:05:37.04\00:05:39.30 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather 00:05:39.33\00:05:41.98 after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and 00:05:42.01\00:05:44.35 hath continued even from the morning until now, 00:05:44.38\00:05:46.66 that she tarried a little in the house. Then said Boaz unto Ruth, 00:05:46.69\00:05:51.74 Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field 00:05:51.84\00:05:55.84 neither go from hence, but abide her fast by my maidens: 00:05:56.03\00:06:00.03 Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou 00:06:00.14\00:06:04.14 after them: have I not charged the young men that they not 00:06:04.23\00:06:07.73 touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, 00:06:07.76\00:06:11.20 and drink of that which the young men have drawn. 00:06:11.23\00:06:13.07 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, 00:06:13.10\00:06:16.86 and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, 00:06:16.89\00:06:20.30 that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, 00:06:20.33\00:06:22.74 seeing I am a stranger? And Boaz answered and said unto her, 00:06:22.77\00:06:27.39 It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy 00:06:27.42\00:06:31.49 mother in law since the death of thine husband: 00:06:31.70\00:06:34.38 and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, 00:06:34.41\00:06:37.34 and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people 00:06:37.37\00:06:40.81 which thou knewest not heretofore. 00:06:40.84\00:06:42.84 The Lord recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee 00:06:42.87\00:06:47.60 of the Lord God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to 00:06:47.63\00:06:50.26 trust. Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, 00:06:50.29\00:06:54.72 my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, 00:06:54.75\00:06:57.39 and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, 00:06:57.42\00:07:00.95 though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens. 00:07:00.98\00:07:03.65 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, 00:07:03.68\00:07:08.37 and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. 00:07:08.41\00:07:11.41 And she sat beside the reapers: And he reached her parched corn, 00:07:11.44\00:07:15.96 and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. 00:07:16.15\00:07:19.08 And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young 00:07:19.11\00:07:22.83 men saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, 00:07:22.86\00:07:25.38 and reproach her not; and let fall also some of the handfuls 00:07:25.41\00:07:30.25 of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, 00:07:30.29\00:07:34.05 and rebuke her not. So she gleaned in the field until even 00:07:34.08\00:07:38.52 and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about an 00:07:38.55\00:07:40.98 ephah of barley. And she took it up, and went into the city: 00:07:41.01\00:07:44.42 and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned and she brought 00:07:44.45\00:07:47.78 forth, and gave to her that she had reserved 00:07:47.81\00:07:50.50 after she was sufficed. And her mother in law said unto her, 00:07:50.53\00:07:54.50 Where hast thou gleaned today? and where wroughtest thou? 00:07:54.53\00:07:58.20 blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. 00:07:58.23\00:08:02.23 And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, 00:08:02.30\00:08:05.92 The man's name with whom I wrought today is Boaz. 00:08:05.95\00:08:09.18 And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he 00:08:09.21\00:08:13.21 of the Lord, who hath not left off his kindness to the living 00:08:13.32\00:08:16.36 and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin 00:08:16.39\00:08:21.11 unto us, one of our next kinsmen. 00:08:21.14\00:08:23.27 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, 00:08:23.30\00:08:27.30 Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all 00:08:27.49\00:08:30.62 my harvest. And Naomi said unto Ruth, her daughter in law, 00:08:30.65\00:08:34.13 It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, 00:08:34.16\00:08:39.32 that they meet thee not in any other field. So she kept fast by 00:08:39.35\00:08:43.88 the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest 00:08:43.91\00:08:47.02 and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law. 00:08:47.05\00:08:50.18 We're reading in the book of Ruth, chapter 3, and 00:08:50.21\00:08:53.39 this is the King James Version. 00:08:53.42\00:08:54.49 Then Naomi her mother in law said unto her, My daughter, 00:08:54.52\00:08:59.57 shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee? 00:08:59.60\00:09:03.12 And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens 00:09:03.15\00:09:07.65 thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley tonight in the threshing 00:09:07.68\00:09:11.55 floor. Wash thy self therefore, and anoint thee, 00:09:11.63\00:09:14.16 and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: 00:09:14.19\00:09:17.25 but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have 00:09:17.28\00:09:21.28 done eating and drinking. And it shall be, when he lieth down, 00:09:21.32\00:09:25.10 that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, 00:09:25.13\00:09:27.10 and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, 00:09:27.13\00:09:29.46 and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do. 00:09:29.49\00:09:32.86 And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do. 00:09:32.89\00:09:38.23 And she went down unto the floor and did according to all that 00:09:38.27\00:09:41.98 her mother in law bade her. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, 00:09:42.01\00:09:46.01 and his heart was merry, he went to lie down 00:09:46.04\00:09:48.37 at the end of the heap of corn. And she came softly and 00:09:48.40\00:09:51.06 uncovered his feet and laid her down. 00:09:51.09\00:09:53.31 And it came to pass at midnight that the man was afraid and 00:09:53.34\00:09:57.83 turned himself, and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. 00:09:57.86\00:10:00.21 And he said, who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth, 00:10:00.24\00:10:04.92 thy handmaid. Spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid: 00:10:04.96\00:10:08.53 For thou art a near kinsman. And he said, Blest be thou 00:10:08.56\00:10:13.24 of the Lord, my daughter, for thou hast showed more kindness 00:10:13.28\00:10:16.29 in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou 00:10:16.32\00:10:19.98 followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. 00:10:20.01\00:10:22.52 And now my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou 00:10:22.55\00:10:27.61 requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that 00:10:27.65\00:10:30.83 thou art a virtuous woman. And now it is true that I am 00:10:30.86\00:10:35.07 thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. 00:10:35.10\00:10:38.84 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, 00:10:38.87\00:10:41.64 that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, 00:10:41.67\00:10:44.38 well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not 00:10:44.41\00:10:48.38 do the part of a kinsman, to thee, then will I do the part 00:10:48.63\00:10:51.93 of a kinsman to thee, as the Lord liveth lie down 00:10:51.96\00:10:55.05 until the morning. And she lay at his feet until the morning: 00:10:55.08\00:10:58.75 and she rose up before one could know another, 00:10:58.78\00:11:01.00 And he said, Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor 00:11:01.03\00:11:04.78 Also he said, Bring the veil that thou hast upon thee, 00:11:04.81\00:11:09.23 and hold it. And when she held it, he measured six measures 00:11:09.26\00:11:12.51 of barley and laid it on her: and she went into the city. 00:11:12.54\00:11:16.35 And when she came to her mother in law, she said, Who art thou? 00:11:16.38\00:11:20.35 my daughter? and she told her all that the man had done to her 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.86 and she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; 00:11:23.89\00:11:27.70 for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law. 00:11:27.73\00:11:30.50 Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know 00:11:30.53\00:11:34.11 how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, 00:11:34.14\00:11:36.99 until he have finished the thing this day. 00:11:37.02\00:11:38.78 And Ruth chapter 4, continuing the story 00:11:38.81\00:11:43.15 in the King James Version. 00:11:43.18\00:11:44.37 Then went Boaz up to the gate, and sat him down there: and, 00:11:44.40\00:11:48.37 behold the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by; unto whom he said 00:11:48.43\00:11:52.33 Ho, such a one! turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, 00:11:52.36\00:11:56.27 and sat down. And he took 10 men of the elders of the city, 00:11:56.30\00:11:59.84 and said, Sit ye down here. And they sat down. And he said 00:11:59.87\00:12:03.84 unto the kinsman, Naomi, that is come again out of the country 00:12:03.93\00:12:07.70 of Moab, selleth a parcel of land which was our brother 00:12:07.73\00:12:11.44 Elimelech's: And I thought to advertise thee, saying, 00:12:11.47\00:12:15.13 Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the elders 00:12:15.16\00:12:18.01 of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: 00:12:18.04\00:12:21.38 But if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: 00:12:21.42\00:12:25.50 for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee 00:12:25.54\00:12:29.59 And he said, I will redeem it. 00:12:29.63\00:12:32.91 Then said Boaz, What day thou buyest the field of the hand of 00:12:32.94\00:12:36.99 Naomi, thou must buy it also of Ruth the Moabitess, 00:12:37.02\00:12:40.74 the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead 00:12:40.77\00:12:42.82 upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it 00:12:42.85\00:12:47.24 for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou 00:12:47.30\00:12:50.73 my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. 00:12:50.76\00:12:53.53 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel 00:12:53.56\00:12:57.00 concerning redeeming and concerning changing, 00:12:57.03\00:12:59.13 for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, 00:12:59.16\00:13:02.58 and gave it to his neighbor: and this was a testimony in Israel. 00:13:02.61\00:13:05.74 Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. 00:13:05.77\00:13:09.74 So he drew off his shoe. And Boaz said unto the elders, 00:13:09.92\00:13:13.69 and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day that 00:13:13.72\00:13:16.18 I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was 00:13:16.21\00:13:18.60 Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi. 00:13:18.63\00:13:21.05 Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I 00:13:21.08\00:13:24.60 purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead 00:13:24.63\00:13:27.32 upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off 00:13:27.35\00:13:30.94 from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: 00:13:30.98\00:13:33.42 Ye are witnesses this day, and all the people that were 00:13:33.45\00:13:37.09 in the gate and the elders, said, We are witnesses. 00:13:37.12\00:13:39.62 The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house 00:13:39.65\00:13:43.09 like Rachael and Like Leah, which two did build the house 00:13:43.12\00:13:45.98 of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephratah, and be famous 00:13:46.01\00:13:49.89 in Bethlehem: And let thy house be like the house of Pharez, 00:13:49.92\00:13:53.89 whom Tamar bare unto Judah, of the seed which the Lord 00:13:53.92\00:13:56.48 shall give the of this young woman. So Boaz took Ruth, 00:13:56.51\00:13:59.74 and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, 00:13:59.77\00:14:02.04 the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son. 00:14:02.07\00:14:04.82 And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the Lord, 00:14:04.85\00:14:08.50 which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, 00:14:08.53\00:14:10.83 that his name may be famous in Israel. And he shall be 00:14:10.86\00:14:14.96 unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine 00:14:14.99\00:14:18.95 old age: for thy daughter in law which loveth thee, 00:14:18.98\00:14:21.56 which is better to thee than 7 sons, hath borne him. 00:14:21.59\00:14:25.54 Thank you for being with me today to read this beautiful 00:14:25.57\00:14:28.38 story of Ruth.
