Hi, and welcome to HIS WORDS ARE LIFE. 00:00:15.75\00:00:17.68 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you for coming apart with me today, 00:00:17.71\00:00:21.07 to read the word of God in the book of Judges, which covers 00:00:21.10\00:00:24.37 stories from the period of God's people, Israel, 00:00:24.40\00:00:27.40 and they were ruled over by various judges. 00:00:27.43\00:00:29.50 We're in the story of Samson. Before we start, reading 00:00:29.53\00:00:32.83 Let's pray together. Dear Lord, please be with us as we hear 00:00:32.86\00:00:37.86 your word right now and may we learn from the story 00:00:37.89\00:00:42.23 that you have preserved from us to obey your better, 00:00:42.26\00:00:45.17 to love you more, and to know your heart. Please live with us, 00:00:45.20\00:00:49.43 teach us, be our God always. Thank you for loving us, 00:00:49.46\00:00:53.11 and we love you so much Amen. 00:00:53.14\00:00:54.79 We're reading the story of Samson. Samson was born 00:00:54.82\00:00:59.20 a Nazarite and was to leave his hair uncut and not touch 00:00:59.23\00:01:02.78 strong wine or drink for his entire life. And he has decided 00:01:02.81\00:01:06.83 to marry a Philistine woman and at their wedding feast 00:01:06.86\00:01:10.24 he gathered some of her people together and proposes a riddle 00:01:10.27\00:01:13.44 to them. He said, If you can figure this riddle out, 00:01:13.47\00:01:16.00 during the days of this feast, then I will pay you 30 changes 00:01:16.03\00:01:19.99 of garments and 30 sheets. But if you can't figure it out, 00:01:20.02\00:01:22.86 then you will give me the same. And we're going to pick up the 00:01:22.89\00:01:25.90 story in Judges, chapter 14, verse 14 as he tells them 00:01:25.93\00:01:29.77 the riddle. And he said unto them, 00:01:29.80\00:01:33.74 Out of the eater came forth meat, and out of the strong, 00:01:33.77\00:01:38.91 came forth sweetness. And they could not in three days 00:01:38.94\00:01:43.51 expound the riddle. And it came to pass on the seventh day, 00:01:43.54\00:01:48.07 that they said unto Samson's wife, Entice thy husband, 00:01:48.10\00:01:51.26 that he may declare unto us the riddled, lest we burn thee 00:01:51.29\00:01:54.85 and thy father's house with fire: Have ye called us to take 00:01:54.88\00:01:58.88 that we have? is it not so? And Samson's wife wept 00:01:58.91\00:02:03.93 before him and said, Thou dost but hate me, and lovest me not: 00:02:03.96\00:02:08.06 thou hast put forth a riddle unto the children of my people, 00:02:08.09\00:02:11.22 and hath not told it me. And he said unto her, Behold, 00:02:11.25\00:02:15.43 I have not told it my father nor my mother, 00:02:15.46\00:02:17.25 and shall I tell it thee? And she wept before him the 7 days, 00:02:17.28\00:02:22.89 while their feast lasted: and it came to pass on the 7th day, 00:02:22.92\00:02:27.03 that he told her, because she lay sore upon him: 00:02:27.06\00:02:29.77 and she told the riddle to the children of her people. 00:02:29.80\00:02:33.37 And the men of the city said unto him on the 7th day 00:02:33.40\00:02:37.61 before the sun went down, What is sweeter than honey? 00:02:37.64\00:02:41.07 and what is stronger than a lion? And he said unto them, 00:02:41.10\00:02:46.38 If ye had not plowed with my heifer, ye had not found out 00:02:46.41\00:02:50.70 my riddle. And the spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he 00:02:50.73\00:02:55.48 went down to Ashkelon, and slew thirty men of them, 00:02:55.51\00:02:58.52 and took their spoil, and gave change of garments unto them 00:02:58.55\00:03:02.80 which expounded the riddle. And his anger was kindled, 00:03:02.83\00:03:06.32 and he went up to his father's house. 00:03:06.35\00:03:08.85 But Samson's wife was given to his companion, 00:03:08.88\00:03:12.35 whom he had used as his friend. 00:03:12.38\00:03:15.03 Continuing the story of Samson in Judges, chapter fifteen, 00:03:15.06\00:03:18.94 and this is the King James Version. 00:03:18.97\00:03:20.48 But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of 00:03:20.51\00:03:26.38 wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; 00:03:26.41\00:03:29.62 and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. 00:03:29.65\00:03:33.44 But her father would suffer him to go in. And her father said, 00:03:33.47\00:03:38.29 I verily thought that thou hadst utterly hated her; 00:03:38.32\00:03:41.42 therefore I gave her to thy companion: is not her younger 00:03:41.45\00:03:46.07 sister fairer than she? Take her I pray thee, instead of her. And 00:03:46.10\00:03:50.12 Samson said concerning them, Now shall I be more blameless 00:03:50.15\00:03:56.37 than the Philistines, though I do them a displeasure. 00:03:56.40\00:03:59.05 And Samson went and caught 300 foxes, and took firebrands, 00:03:59.08\00:04:04.04 and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst 00:04:04.07\00:04:07.68 between two tails. And when he had set the brands on fire, 00:04:07.71\00:04:11.90 he let them go into the standing corn of the Philistines, 00:04:11.93\00:04:15.47 and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, 00:04:15.50\00:04:20.29 with the vineyards and the olives. 00:04:20.32\00:04:22.48 Then the Philistines said, Who hath done this? 00:04:22.51\00:04:26.23 And they answered, Samson, the son in law of the Timnite, 00:04:26.26\00:04:30.04 because he had taken his wife, and given her to his companion. 00:04:30.07\00:04:33.02 And the Philistines came up, and burnt her and her father 00:04:33.05\00:04:37.27 with fire. And Samson said unto them, Though ye have done this, 00:04:37.30\00:04:42.26 yet will I be avenged of you, and after that I will cease. 00:04:42.29\00:04:46.77 And he smote them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: 00:04:46.80\00:04:51.80 And he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock Etam. 00:04:51.83\00:04:55.34 Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, 00:04:55.37\00:04:58.57 and spread themselves in Lehi. And the men of Judah said, 00:04:58.60\00:05:03.06 Why are ye come up against us? And they answered, To bind 00:05:03.09\00:05:07.56 Samson are we come up, to do to him as he hath done to us. 00:05:07.59\00:05:11.34 Then 3,000 men of Judah went to the top of the rock Etam, 00:05:11.37\00:05:16.42 and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines 00:05:16.45\00:05:20.71 are rulers over us? what is this that thou hast done unto us? 00:05:20.74\00:05:24.07 And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done 00:05:24.10\00:05:28.48 unto them. And they said unto him, We are come down to bind 00:05:28.51\00:05:33.46 thee, that we may deliver thee into the hand of the Philistines 00:05:33.49\00:05:36.06 and Samson said unto them, Swear unto me, that ye will not 00:05:36.09\00:05:41.50 fall upon me yourselves. And they spake unto him, saying, 00:05:41.53\00:05:45.32 No; but we will bind thee fast, and deliver thee into their hand 00:05:45.35\00:05:49.98 but surely we will not kill thee. And they bound him with 00:05:50.01\00:05:53.12 two new cords, and brought him up from the rock. 00:05:53.15\00:05:55.54 And when he came unto Lehi, the Philistines shouted against 00:05:55.57\00:05:59.89 him, and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, 00:05:59.92\00:06:04.00 and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax 00:06:04.03\00:06:08.37 that was burnt with fire, and his bands loosed 00:06:08.40\00:06:11.30 from off his hands. And he found a new jawbone of an ass, 00:06:11.33\00:06:16.01 and put forth his hand, and took it, and slew 1,000 men 00:06:16.04\00:06:20.19 therewith. And Samson said, With the jawbone of an ass, 00:06:20.22\00:06:24.73 heaps upon heaps, with the jaw of an ass have I slain a 00:06:24.76\00:06:29.09 thousand men. And it came to pass, when he had made and end 00:06:29.12\00:06:33.57 of speaking, that he cast away the jawbone out of his hand, 00:06:33.60\00:06:36.52 and called that place Ramath-lehi. 00:06:36.55\00:06:40.01 And he was sore athirst, and called on the Lord, and said, 00:06:40.04\00:06:44.58 Thou hast given this great deliverance into the hand 00:06:44.61\00:06:47.14 of thy servant: and now shall I die for thirst, 00:06:47.17\00:06:50.27 and fall unto the hands of the uncircumcised? 00:06:50.30\00:06:52.52 But God clave an hollow place that was in the jaw, and 00:06:52.55\00:06:57.61 there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, 00:06:57.64\00:07:02.02 his spirit came again, and he was revived: wherefore 00:07:02.05\00:07:06.27 he called the name thereof Enhakkore, which is in Lehi 00:07:06.30\00:07:10.40 unto this day. And he judged Israel in the days 00:07:10.43\00:07:13.97 of the Philistines twenty years. 00:07:14.00\00:07:16.15 Continuing in Judges, chapter sixteen, 00:07:16.18\00:07:19.24 and this is the King James Version. 00:07:19.27\00:07:20.56 Then went Samson to Gaza, and saw there an harlot, 00:07:20.59\00:07:26.20 and went in unto her. And it was told the Gazites, saying, 00:07:26.23\00:07:31.32 Samson is come hither. And they compassed him in, and laid wait 00:07:31.35\00:07:35.20 for him all night in the gate of the city, and were quiet 00:07:35.23\00:07:38.38 all the night, saying, In the morning when it is day, 00:07:38.41\00:07:41.80 we shall kill him. And Samson lay till midnight, and arose 00:07:41.83\00:07:46.92 at midnight, and took the doors of the gate of the city, and the 00:07:46.95\00:07:50.88 two posts, and went away with them, bar and all, and 00:07:50.92\00:07:54.80 put them upon his shoulders, and carried them up to the top 00:07:54.84\00:07:58.36 of an hill that is before Hebron. And it came to pass 00:07:58.39\00:08:01.83 afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, 00:08:01.86\00:08:05.21 whose name was Delilah. And the Lords of the Philistines 00:08:05.24\00:08:10.19 came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, 00:08:10.22\00:08:13.19 and see wherein his great strength lieth, 00:08:13.22\00:08:16.97 and by what means we may prevail against him, 00:08:17.00\00:08:19.81 that we may bind him to afflict him; and we will give thee 00:08:19.84\00:08:23.76 every one of us eleven hundred pieces of silver. 00:08:23.79\00:08:27.00 And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray thee, wherein 00:08:27.03\00:08:31.88 thy great strength lieth, and wherewith thou mightest 00:08:31.91\00:08:34.32 be bound to afflict thee. And Samson said unto her, 00:08:34.35\00:08:38.42 If they bind me with 7 green withs that were never dried, 00:08:38.45\00:08:42.20 then shall I be weak, and be as another man. 00:08:42.23\00:08:45.27 Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her 00:08:45.30\00:08:48.86 seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him 00:08:48.89\00:08:53.25 with them. Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her 00:08:53.28\00:08:57.85 in the chamber. And she said unto him, 00:08:57.88\00:09:00.13 The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he brake the withs, 00:09:00.16\00:09:04.88 as a thread of tow is broken when it toucheth the fire. 00:09:04.91\00:09:08.02 So his strength was not known. And Delilah said unto Samson, 00:09:08.05\00:09:13.23 Behold, thou hast mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, 00:09:13.26\00:09:18.30 I pray thee, wherewith thou mightest be bound. 00:09:18.33\00:09:20.91 And he said unto her, If they bind me fast with new ropes 00:09:20.94\00:09:25.61 that never were occupied, then shall I be weak, and 00:09:25.64\00:09:29.38 be as another man. Delilah therefore took new ropes, 00:09:29.41\00:09:34.12 and bound him therewith, and said unto him, The Philistines 00:09:34.15\00:09:38.21 be upon thee, Samson. And there were liers in wait abiding in 00:09:38.24\00:09:43.29 the chamber. And he brake them from off his arms like a thread. 00:09:43.32\00:09:48.12 And Delilah said unto Samson, Hitherto thou hast mocked me, 00:09:48.15\00:09:53.95 and told me lies: tell me wherewith thou mightest 00:09:53.98\00:09:57.21 be bound. And he said unto her, If thou weavest the 7 locks 00:09:57.24\00:10:01.96 of my head with the web. And she fastened it with the pin, 00:10:01.99\00:10:07.06 and said unto him, the Philistines be upon thee, Samson 00:10:07.09\00:10:10.57 And he awaked out of his sleep and went away with the pin 00:10:10.60\00:10:15.09 of the beam, and with the web. And she said unto him, 00:10:15.12\00:10:19.48 How canst thou say, I love thee, when thine heart is not with me? 00:10:19.51\00:10:23.98 thou hast mocked me these three times, and hast not told me 00:10:24.01\00:10:27.66 wherein thy great strength lieth. And it came to pass, 00:10:27.69\00:10:31.96 when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, 00:10:31.99\00:10:36.83 so that his soul was vexed unto death; that he told her 00:10:36.86\00:10:41.94 all his heart, and said unto her, There hath not come a razor 00:10:41.97\00:10:47.23 upon mine head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God 00:10:47.26\00:10:51.11 from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength 00:10:51.14\00:10:55.62 will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like 00:10:55.65\00:10:59.68 any other man. And when Delilah saw that he had told her 00:10:59.71\00:11:05.43 all his heart, she sent and called for the lords 00:11:05.46\00:11:09.10 of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he hath shewed 00:11:09.13\00:11:12.80 me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up 00:11:12.83\00:11:16.93 unto her, and brought money in their hand. And 00:11:16.96\00:11:20.06 she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, 00:11:20.09\00:11:24.98 and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; 00:11:25.01\00:11:29.23 and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. 00:11:29.26\00:11:34.73 And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. 00:11:34.76\00:11:38.29 And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at 00:11:38.32\00:11:42.95 other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not 00:11:42.98\00:11:47.30 that the Lord was departed from him. But the Philistines took 00:11:47.33\00:11:52.70 him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, 00:11:52.73\00:11:56.57 and bound him with fetters of brass; 00:11:56.60\00:11:58.66 and he did grind in the prison house. 00:11:58.69\00:12:01.75 Howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again 00:12:01.78\00:12:05.81 after he was shaven. Then the lords of the Philistines 00:12:05.84\00:12:09.92 gathered them together for to offer a great sacrifice 00:12:09.95\00:12:13.03 unto Dagon their god, and to rejoice: for they said, our god 00:12:13.06\00:12:16.82 hath delivered Samson our enemy into our hand. 00:12:16.85\00:12:19.02 And when the people saw him, they praised their god: 00:12:19.05\00:12:22.66 for they said, Our god hath delivered into our hands 00:12:22.69\00:12:25.45 our enemy, and the destroyer of our country, which slew many 00:12:25.48\00:12:29.01 of us. And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, 00:12:29.04\00:12:33.32 that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. 00:12:33.35\00:12:37.90 And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and 00:12:37.93\00:12:41.01 he made them sport: and they set him between the pillars. 00:12:41.04\00:12:44.13 And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, 00:12:44.16\00:12:48.59 Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house 00:12:48.62\00:12:52.86 standeth, that I may lean upon them. Now the house was full 00:12:52.89\00:12:57.25 of men and women; and all the lords of the Philistines 00:12:57.28\00:12:59.87 were there; and there were upon the roof about 3,000 men and 00:12:59.90\00:13:03.70 women, that beheld while Samson made sport. And Samson called 00:13:03.73\00:13:08.57 unto the Lord, and said, O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, 00:13:08.60\00:13:13.53 and strengthen me, I pray thee, only this once, O God, 00:13:13.56\00:13:18.23 that I may be at once avenged of the Philistines 00:13:18.26\00:13:22.18 for my two eyes. And Samson took hold of the two middle 00:13:22.21\00:13:26.23 pillars upon which the house stood, 00:13:26.26\00:13:28.29 and on which it was borne up, of the one with his right hand, 00:13:28.32\00:13:31.42 and of the other with his left. And Samson said, Let me die 00:13:31.45\00:13:35.80 with the Philistines. And he bowed himself with all his might 00:13:35.83\00:13:39.56 and the house fell upon the lords, and upon all the people 00:13:39.59\00:13:43.46 that were therein. So the dead which he slew at his death 00:13:43.49\00:13:47.32 were more than they which he slew in his life. 00:13:47.35\00:13:49.78 Then his brethren and all the house of his father came down, 00:13:49.81\00:13:53.13 and took him, and brought him up, and buried him between 00:13:53.16\00:13:56.20 Zorah and Eshtaol in the burying place of Manoah 00:13:56.23\00:13:59.06 his father. And he judged Israel twenty years. 00:13:59.09\00:14:02.89 Thank you for being with me today to read the word of God 00:14:02.92\00:14:07.17 together. And in the story of Samson's life, may we find 00:14:07.20\00:14:10.39 again, a renewed encouragement to seek God to keep us obedient 00:14:10.42\00:14:16.13 to his word, to keep us set apart for Him; 00:14:16.16\00:14:18.81 so that he may be glorified through us, only in his strength 00:14:18.84\00:14:23.98 will we receive all that we need to serve him 00:14:24.01\00:14:26.87 and to serve each other better. So until then, may God keep us 00:14:26.90\00:14:29.87 all, and thank you for joining with me. Goodbye. 00:14:29.90\00:14:33.03
