Hi and welcome to His Words Are Life. 00:00:17.27\00:00:19.57 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and thank you 00:00:19.77\00:00:21.06 for joining with me today 00:00:21.18\00:00:22.27 to read the Word of God. 00:00:22.38\00:00:23.43 Before we read together, let's pray. 00:00:23.53\00:00:25.33 Dear Jesus, thank you so much that once again we can come 00:00:26.37\00:00:30.30 and sit with you and read your words to us. 00:00:30.40\00:00:33.20 Thank you that you have told us the way to all truth 00:00:33.40\00:00:36.82 lies in your words and that we now have the opportunity to... 00:00:36.92\00:00:40.43 to hear them and to know you better. 00:00:40.53\00:00:42.88 Please be with us as we read. Help us to understand 00:00:43.08\00:00:46.58 and beyond understanding help us to put into practice 00:00:46.68\00:00:50.11 the lessons that you want us to learn today. 00:00:50.31\00:00:52.35 We love you so much and thank you for loving us. 00:00:52.55\00:00:54.88 Amen. 00:00:55.08\00:00:56.22 When we were last together we were reading about Moses 00:00:56.82\00:00:59.69 and the Israelites in the wilderness. 00:00:59.79\00:01:01.92 And his father-in-law comes to visit him: Jethro. 00:01:02.02\00:01:04.66 He's heard all of the miracles and all of the ways that God has 00:01:04.86\00:01:07.84 blessed Moses and freed the Israelites from the Egyptians. 00:01:07.94\00:01:11.13 And so Jethro comes to him, and Moses is glad to see him 00:01:11.23\00:01:14.06 and they talk together. And then Jethro watches as Moses 00:01:14.26\00:01:17.65 is judging the Israelites that line up and bring to Moses 00:01:17.75\00:01:21.56 all of their problems throughout the day. 00:01:21.66\00:01:24.23 And at the end of the day Jethro says to Moses: 00:01:24.43\00:01:26.67 Why are you doing this? This isn't a good thing 00:01:26.77\00:01:28.59 you are doing. And it struck me as we were reading this that 00:01:28.69\00:01:31.91 rather than get sort of indignant or offended in any way 00:01:32.02\00:01:35.68 and say something like "Well, God's just used me to 00:01:35.78\00:01:39.28 free the Israelites and you dare to say that what I'm doing 00:01:39.38\00:01:41.55 is the wrong thing? " Instead, Moses is humble, 00:01:41.65\00:01:44.16 and he listens to the counsel of his father-in-law. 00:01:44.26\00:01:46.80 And he goes ahead and appoints the different judges to handle 00:01:47.01\00:01:50.15 the smaller matters and conserve his strength. 00:01:50.25\00:01:52.71 And I thought what a lesson in humility and in wisdom 00:01:52.91\00:01:56.23 Moses gives to each of us by that example. 00:01:56.33\00:01:59.08 And now we're continuing to read in Exodus. 00:01:59.29\00:02:01.60 This is chapter 19, and we are starting with verse 10. 00:02:01.80\00:02:05.88 The Israelites have just told God through Moses 00:02:06.08\00:02:09.55 that they are going to do everything that the Lord 00:02:09.65\00:02:11.87 has told them to do. Picking up in verse 10... 00:02:11.97\00:02:14.78 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go unto the people, 00:02:14.89\00:02:16.96 and sanctify them today and tomorrow, 00:02:17.06\00:02:19.87 and let them wash their clothes. 00:02:19.98\00:02:21.59 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the Lord 00:02:21.79\00:02:25.69 will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 00:02:25.79\00:02:29.21 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, 00:02:29.41\00:02:33.43 Take heed to yourselves, that you go not up into the mount, 00:02:33.64\00:02:37.10 or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount 00:02:37.20\00:02:40.81 shall be surely put to death: 00:02:40.91\00:02:43.20 There shall not a hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, 00:02:43.30\00:02:47.46 or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: 00:02:47.66\00:02:51.68 when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. 00:02:51.78\00:02:56.01 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, 00:02:56.21\00:02:59.04 and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. 00:02:59.14\00:03:01.46 And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: 00:03:01.66\00:03:06.08 come not at your wives. 00:03:06.18\00:03:08.72 And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, 00:03:08.92\00:03:11.53 that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud 00:03:11.63\00:03:15.10 upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud: 00:03:15.20\00:03:19.16 so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. 00:03:19.26\00:03:22.41 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp 00:03:22.65\00:03:25.85 to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 00:03:25.95\00:03:30.28 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, 00:03:30.48\00:03:33.35 because the Lord descended upon it in fire: 00:03:33.45\00:03:35.89 and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, 00:03:36.10\00:03:39.34 and the whole mount quaked greatly. 00:03:39.54\00:03:41.60 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, 00:03:41.80\00:03:44.10 and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, 00:03:44.20\00:03:47.20 and God answered him by a voice. 00:03:47.40\00:03:49.88 And the Lord came down upon mount Sinai, 00:03:50.08\00:03:52.84 on the top of the mount: and the Lord called Moses up 00:03:52.87\00:03:56.30 to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 00:03:56.40\00:03:58.57 And the Lord said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, 00:03:58.77\00:04:02.16 lest they break through unto the Lord to gaze, 00:04:02.26\00:04:04.97 and many of them perish. 00:04:05.07\00:04:06.24 And let the priests also, which come near to the Lord, 00:04:06.44\00:04:09.38 sanctify themselves, lest the Lord break forth upon them. 00:04:09.48\00:04:13.00 And Moses said unto the Lord, The people cannot come up 00:04:13.20\00:04:16.27 to mount Sinai: for Thou chargedst us, saying, 00:04:16.37\00:04:18.46 Set bounds about the mount, and sanctify it. 00:04:18.57\00:04:21.00 And the Lord said unto him, Away, get thee down, 00:04:21.20\00:04:24.51 and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee: 00:04:24.62\00:04:26.69 but let not the priests and the people break through to come up 00:04:26.79\00:04:29.92 unto the Lord, lest He break forth upon them. 00:04:30.02\00:04:32.56 So Moses went down unto the people, and spake unto them. 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.64 We are reading in the book of Exodus, chapter 20, and this is 00:04:36.84\00:04:40.14 the King James version. 00:04:40.28\00:04:41.40 And God spake all these words, saying, 00:04:42.48\00:04:45.48 I am the Lord thy God, 00:04:45.68\00:04:47.74 which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, 00:04:47.84\00:04:49.93 out of the house of bondage. 00:04:50.03\00:04:52.15 Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. 00:04:52.35\00:04:55.51 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, 00:04:55.71\00:04:58.66 or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, 00:04:58.77\00:05:01.80 or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water 00:05:02.00\00:05:04.71 under the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, 00:05:04.81\00:05:07.68 nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, 00:05:07.78\00:05:12.60 visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children 00:05:12.80\00:05:15.83 unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; 00:05:15.94\00:05:18.65 and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love Me, 00:05:18.85\00:05:22.44 and keep My commandments. 00:05:22.54\00:05:24.03 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: 00:05:24.24\00:05:27.83 for the Lord will not hold him guiltless 00:05:28.03\00:05:30.70 that taketh His name in vain. 00:05:30.80\00:05:32.70 Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 00:05:32.90\00:05:36.26 Six day shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: 00:05:36.46\00:05:39.34 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God: 00:05:39.54\00:05:42.61 in it thou shalt not do any work, 00:05:42.81\00:05:45.25 thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, 00:05:45.45\00:05:48.02 thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, 00:05:48.22\00:05:51.08 nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.58 for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 00:05:53.78\00:05:56.60 the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: 00:05:56.80\00:06:00.93 wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it. 00:06:01.13\00:06:05.04 Honor thy father and thy mother: 00:06:05.24\00:06:07.78 that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God 00:06:07.98\00:06:11.18 giveth thee. Thou shalt not kill. 00:06:11.28\00:06:14.25 Thou shalt not commit adultery. 00:06:14.45\00:06:16.84 Thou shalt not steal. 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.07 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. 00:06:19.27\00:06:22.36 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, 00:06:22.56\00:06:25.17 thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, 00:06:25.37\00:06:27.43 nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, 00:06:27.63\00:06:29.89 nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's. 00:06:30.09\00:06:34.27 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, 00:06:34.47\00:06:38.31 and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: 00:06:38.41\00:06:40.80 and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. 00:06:41.01\00:06:44.70 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, 00:06:44.90\00:06:47.91 and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. 00:06:48.01\00:06:51.56 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: 00:06:51.76\00:06:54.54 for God is come to prove you, 00:06:54.64\00:06:56.58 and that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. 00:06:56.68\00:07:01.03 And the people stood afar off, 00:07:01.06\00:07:03.36 and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. 00:07:03.46\00:07:06.45 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the 00:07:06.65\00:07:09.79 children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you 00:07:09.89\00:07:12.50 from heaven. Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, 00:07:12.60\00:07:16.24 neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 00:07:16.34\00:07:18.81 And altar of earth thou shalt make unto Me, 00:07:19.01\00:07:21.40 and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, 00:07:21.50\00:07:23.84 and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: 00:07:23.94\00:07:27.20 in all places where I record My name, I will come unto thee, 00:07:27.41\00:07:31.41 and I will bless thee. 00:07:31.51\00:07:33.42 And if thou wilt make Me an altar of stone, 00:07:33.62\00:07:36.56 thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: 00:07:36.66\00:07:38.80 for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 00:07:38.91\00:07:42.32 Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, 00:07:42.52\00:07:45.46 that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon. 00:07:45.67\00:07:48.81 Continuing with Exodus chapter 21 00:07:49.70\00:07:52.32 in the King James version. 00:07:52.42\00:07:53.64 Now these are the judgments 00:07:53.84\00:07:55.93 which thou shalt set before them. 00:07:56.03\00:07:57.74 If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: 00:07:57.94\00:08:02.13 and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 00:08:02.23\00:08:05.90 If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: 00:08:06.10\00:08:08.99 if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. 00:08:09.19\00:08:12.62 If his master have given him a wife, 00:08:12.82\00:08:15.59 and she have born him sons or daughters; 00:08:15.79\00:08:17.83 the wife and her children shall be her master's, 00:08:18.03\00:08:21.10 and he shall go out by himself. 00:08:21.20\00:08:23.11 And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, 00:08:23.31\00:08:27.66 my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: 00:08:27.76\00:08:31.45 Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; 00:08:31.65\00:08:34.40 he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; 00:08:34.60\00:08:37.46 and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; 00:08:37.56\00:08:41.78 and he shall serve him for ever. 00:08:41.88\00:08:44.14 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, 00:08:44.34\00:08:47.79 she shall not go out as the menservants do. 00:08:47.89\00:08:51.35 If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her 00:08:51.55\00:08:54.99 to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: 00:08:55.10\00:08:58.67 to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, 00:08:58.88\00:09:02.31 seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. 00:09:02.51\00:09:05.08 And if he have betrothed her unto his son, 00:09:05.28\00:09:09.14 he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 00:09:09.35\00:09:11.94 If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, 00:09:12.15\00:09:15.92 and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 00:09:16.02\00:09:18.94 And if he do not these three unto her, 00:09:19.14\00:09:21.88 then shall she go out free without money. 00:09:22.08\00:09:24.84 He that smiteth a man, so that he die, 00:09:25.04\00:09:28.05 shall be surely put to death. 00:09:28.25\00:09:30.47 And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him 00:09:30.67\00:09:33.80 into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place 00:09:33.90\00:09:36.66 whither he shall flee. 00:09:36.76\00:09:38.92 But if a man come presumptiously upon his neighbor, 00:09:39.12\00:09:42.23 to slay him with guile; 00:09:42.33\00:09:43.96 thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. 00:09:44.16\00:09:47.38 And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, 00:09:47.58\00:09:50.78 shall be surely put to death. 00:09:50.88\00:09:52.29 And he that stealth a man, and selleth him, 00:09:52.39\00:09:54.52 or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 00:09:54.62\00:09:57.82 And he that curseth his father, or his mother, 00:09:58.02\00:10:00.26 shall surely be put to death. 00:10:00.36\00:10:02.22 And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, 00:10:02.32\00:10:06.17 or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed: 00:10:06.27\00:10:09.91 If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, 00:10:10.11\00:10:13.47 then shall he that smote him be quit: 00:10:13.67\00:10:16.77 only he shall pay for the loss of his time, 00:10:16.97\00:10:19.47 and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. 00:10:19.50\00:10:22.06 And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, 00:10:22.26\00:10:26.30 and if he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. 00:10:26.50\00:10:29.92 Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, 00:10:30.12\00:10:33.54 he shall not be punished: for he is his money. 00:10:33.74\00:10:37.38 If men strive and hurt a woman with child, 00:10:37.58\00:10:40.57 so that her fruit depart from her, 00:10:40.77\00:10:43.12 and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, 00:10:43.22\00:10:47.26 according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; 00:10:47.36\00:10:50.78 and he shall pay as the judges determine. 00:10:50.98\00:10:53.64 And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life. 00:10:53.84\00:10:57.66 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 00:10:57.87\00:11:03.68 Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. 00:11:03.88\00:11:08.67 And if a man smite the eye of his servant, 00:11:08.87\00:11:11.63 or the eye of his maid, that it perish; 00:11:11.73\00:11:13.94 he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 00:11:14.15\00:11:16.94 And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, 00:11:17.14\00:11:19.46 or his maidservant's tooth, 00:11:19.56\00:11:20.90 he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. 00:11:21.10\00:11:24.14 If an ox gore a man or a woman that they die: 00:11:24.35\00:11:28.59 then the ox shall be surely stoned, 00:11:28.80\00:11:31.16 and his flesh shall not be eaten;
