Hi, and welcome back to His Words are Life. 00:00:16.36\00:00:18.28 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me again today 00:00:18.31\00:00:22.10 to read the word of God. Before we continue with Joseph's story 00:00:22.13\00:00:26.25 let's pray together. -Dear Lord, thank you so much for this 00:00:26.28\00:00:30.93 wonderful story that we are in the middle of reading, 00:00:30.96\00:00:33.51 of your servant, Joseph and how even in the darkest times 00:00:33.54\00:00:38.51 it seems like he was abandoned and forgotten, a slave. You were 00:00:38.54\00:00:43.64 with him and each of us who are reading and listening now, 00:00:43.67\00:00:48.05 when we face the things in our lives that we don't see the 00:00:48.08\00:00:52.04 answers to, bring to our mind Joseph's story and the 00:00:52.07\00:00:55.93 words, The Lord was with Joseph. And may that encourage each 00:00:55.96\00:00:59.27 of us to remember that you are with us you'll bring us safely 00:00:59.30\00:01:03.08 through. Thank you for loving us We love you so much. 00:01:03.11\00:01:06.76 We are in the middle of the story of Joseph and when we 00:01:06.79\00:01:12.57 read last together, he was in prison and there were 2 officers 00:01:12.60\00:01:18.31 of Pharaoh's court, also in prison 00:01:18.34\00:01:20.11 with him who had had dreams. 00:01:20.14\00:01:21.36 The baker and the chief Butler. And they were troubled by the 00:01:21.39\00:01:24.58 dreams, didn't understand them and Joseph interpreted them. 00:01:24.61\00:01:27.53 And the dreams came true just as he had said. 00:01:27.56\00:01:30.64 And Joseph had a request for the butler; because the butler 00:01:30.67\00:01:33.98 was going to be returned to Pharaoh's court, and Joseph said 00:01:34.01\00:01:36.31 When you get out, please remember me and tell Pharaoh 00:01:36.34\00:01:39.40 about me; because I haven't done anything to deserve being 00:01:39.43\00:01:42.48 in here. Please help me clear my name. And so the butler 00:01:42.51\00:01:45.53 gets out, just as Joseph had interpreted in the dream, 00:01:45.56\00:01:49.11 and forgets about Joseph. And for two more years Joseph is in 00:01:49.14\00:01:53.03 prison until Pharaoh has a couple of dreams that he doesn't 00:01:53.06\00:01:56.08 understand and his wise men can't interpret them; but this 00:01:56.11\00:01:59.70 prompts the memory of the chief butler and he speaks up 00:01:59.73\00:02:03.03 and he said, I am remembering my faults here because I 00:02:03.06\00:02:06.48 forgot to do something that I should have done 2 years ago. 00:02:06.51\00:02:09.00 When I was in prison, I had a dream and there was a man 00:02:09.03\00:02:12.03 there who interpreted it correctly. And so we're going to 00:02:12.06\00:02:15.66 continue now because what happened is Pharaoh sent 00:02:15.69\00:02:17.74 to the prison and Joseph was taken out, he was cleaned up, 00:02:17.77\00:02:21.83 and brought before Pharaoh. And another thing that struck me 00:02:21.86\00:02:25.80 as we were reading last time: here is Joseph who has been 00:02:25.83\00:02:27.80 languishing in this prison for all these years, forgotten, 00:02:27.83\00:02:30.49 and he's brought into the court of the king and the king says 00:02:30.52\00:02:34.59 to him, I understand you interpret dreams. And Joseph is 00:02:34.62\00:02:37.90 so humble and walking so closely with God, that he isn't tempted 00:02:37.93\00:02:42.59 and that he doesn't to ahead and say, Why, yes sir, I do. 00:02:42.62\00:02:46.41 He immediately gives the glory to God. He says, well I don't 00:02:46.44\00:02:48.59 do it; but God can interpret the dream. So Pharaoh, as we pick 00:02:48.62\00:02:52.14 up the story, beginning to tell Joseph his dreams 00:02:52.17\00:02:54.81 so that Joseph's God can interpret the dreams to Pharaoh. 00:02:54.84\00:02:58.76 We're reading in Genesis in chapter 41, picking up with 00:02:58.79\00:03:03.48 I'm going to start with 17. We actually read that last time 00:03:03.51\00:03:06.35 but we'll start with that because it's the beginning of 00:03:06.38\00:03:08.43 the dream. - And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, In my dream, behold 00:03:08.46\00:03:12.85 I stood upon the bank of the river: and behold, there came up 00:03:12.88\00:03:16.91 out of the river seven kine, fat fleshed and well favored; 00:03:16.94\00:03:20.77 and they fed in a meadow: and, behold, seven other kine came up 00:03:20.80\00:03:24.72 after them, poor and very ill favored and lean fleshed, 00:03:24.75\00:03:27.65 such as I never saw in all the land of Egypt for badness: 00:03:27.68\00:03:31.11 And the lean and the ill favored kine did eat up the first seven 00:03:31.14\00:03:35.60 fat kine: and when they had eaten them up, it could not be 00:03:35.63\00:03:39.08 knows that they had eaten them; but they were still ill favored, 00:03:39.11\00:03:42.01 as at the beginning. So I awoke. And I saw in my dream, 00:03:42.04\00:03:47.16 and, behold seven ears came up in one stalk, full and good: 00:03:47.19\00:03:51.25 and behold seven ears, withered, thin, and blasted with the east 00:03:51.28\00:03:56.21 wind, sprung up after them: And the thin ears devoured 00:03:56.24\00:03:59.78 the seven good ears: and I told this unto the magicians; 00:03:59.81\00:04:03.41 but there was none that could declare it to me. 00:04:03.44\00:04:05.65 And Joseph said unto Pharaoh, The dream of Pharaoh is one: 00:04:05.68\00:04:10.61 God hath shewed Pharaoh what he is about to do. The 7 good kine 00:04:10.64\00:04:15.91 are 7 years; and the 7 good ears are 7 years: the dream is one. 00:04:15.94\00:04:21.73 And the 7 thin and ill favored kine that came up after them 00:04:21.76\00:04:26.57 are 7 years; and the 7 empty ears blasted with the east wind 00:04:26.60\00:04:32.09 shall be 7 years of famine. This is the thing which I have spoken 00:04:32.12\00:04:36.73 unto Pharaoh: What God is about to do he sheweth unto Pharaoh. 00:04:36.76\00:04:41.32 Behold, there come 7 years of great plenty throughout all 00:04:41.35\00:04:45.76 the land of Egypt: And there shall arise after them 7 years 00:04:45.79\00:04:49.41 of famine; and all the plenty shall be forgotten in the land 00:04:49.44\00:04:52.19 of Egypt; and the famine shall consume the land; and the plenty 00:04:52.22\00:04:57.31 shall not be known in the land 00:04:57.34\00:04:58.71 by reason of the famine following 00:04:58.74\00:05:00.60 for it shall be very grievous. And for that the dream was 00:05:00.73\00:05:05.68 doubled unto Pharaoh twice; it is because the thing is 00:05:05.71\00:05:08.13 established by God, and God will shortly bring it to pass. 00:05:08.16\00:05:11.97 Now therefore let Pharaoh look out a man discreet and wise, 00:05:12.00\00:05:17.16 and set him over the land of Egypt. Let Pharaoh do this, 00:05:17.19\00:05:21.61 and let him appoint officers over the land, and take up 00:05:21.64\00:05:25.52 the fifth part of the land of Egypt in the 7 plenteous years. 00:05:25.55\00:05:29.26 And let them gather all the food of those good years that come, 00:05:29.29\00:05:33.30 and lay up corn under the hand of Pharaoh, and let them keep 00:05:33.33\00:05:37.51 food in the cities. And that food shall be for store to the 00:05:37.54\00:05:41.98 land against the 7 years of famine, which shall be in the 00:05:42.01\00:05:45.65 land of Egypt; that the land perish not through the famine. 00:05:45.68\00:05:49.58 And the thing was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes 00:05:49.61\00:05:54.25 of all his servants. And Pharaoh said unto his servants, 00:05:54.28\00:05:57.85 Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the spirit of 00:05:57.88\00:06:02.93 of God is? And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath 00:06:02.96\00:06:07.98 shewed thee all this, there is none so discreet and wise as 00:06:08.01\00:06:13.14 thou art: Thou shalt be over my house, and according unto 00:06:13.17\00:06:17.86 thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I 00:06:17.89\00:06:24.09 be greater than thou. And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, 00:06:24.12\00:06:28.26 See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. And Pharaoh 00:06:28.29\00:06:32.02 took off his ring from his hand, an put it upon Joseph's hand, 00:06:32.05\00:06:35.13 and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a golden 00:06:35.16\00:06:39.24 chain about his neck; And he made him to ride in the second 00:06:39.27\00:06:43.01 chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: 00:06:43.04\00:06:46.39 and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. 00:06:46.42\00:06:49.88 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee 00:06:49.91\00:06:55.41 shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. 00:06:55.44\00:06:59.75 And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnathpaaneah; 00:06:59.78\00:07:04.30 and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potipherah 00:07:04.33\00:07:08.92 priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. 00:07:08.95\00:07:14.02 And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh 00:07:14.05\00:07:17.59 king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh 00:07:17.62\00:07:21.28 and went throughout all the land of Egypt. And in the 7 plenteous 00:07:21.31\00:07:25.58 years the earth brought forth by handfuls. And he gathered up 00:07:25.61\00:07:30.52 all the food of the 7 years, which were in the land of Egypt, 00:07:30.55\00:07:33.26 and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field 00:07:33.29\00:07:36.75 which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. 00:07:36.78\00:07:41.40 And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, 00:07:41.43\00:07:44.73 until he left numbering; for it was without number. 00:07:44.76\00:07:48.14 And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine 00:07:48.17\00:07:53.02 came, which Asenath the daughter of Potipherah priest of On 00:07:53.05\00:07:57.23 bare unto him. And Joseph called the name of the firstborn, 00:07:57.26\00:08:01.16 Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, 00:08:01.19\00:08:06.77 and all my father's house. And the name of the second called he 00:08:06.80\00:08:10.84 Ephraim: For God hath caused me to be fruitful in the land of 00:08:10.87\00:08:15.72 my affliction. And the 7 years of plenteousness, that was in 00:08:15.75\00:08:20.71 the land of Egypt, were ended. And the 7 years of dearth 00:08:20.74\00:08:25.05 began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the dearth 00:08:25.08\00:08:29.49 was in all the lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was 00:08:29.52\00:08:33.60 bread. And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people 00:08:33.63\00:08:37.88 cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the 00:08:37.91\00:08:40.36 Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. 00:08:40.39\00:08:44.36 And the famine was over all the face of the earth: and Joseph 00:08:44.39\00:08:49.55 opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; 00:08:49.58\00:08:52.80 and the famine waxed sore in the land of Egypt. And all countries 00:08:52.83\00:08:58.25 came into Egypt to Joseph for to buy corn; because that the 00:08:58.28\00:09:02.84 famine was so sore in all lands. 00:09:02.87\00:09:05.72 We're continuing now with Genesis, and chapter 42. 00:09:05.75\00:09:09.46 This is the King James Version. 00:09:09.49\00:09:11.70 Now when Jacob saw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob said 00:09:11.73\00:09:16.60 unto his sons, Why do ye look one upon another? 00:09:16.63\00:09:19.95 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is corn 00:09:19.98\00:09:22.26 in Egypt: get you down thither, and buy for us from thence; 00:09:22.29\00:09:25.87 that we may live, and not die. And Joseph's ten brethren 00:09:25.90\00:09:30.80 went down to buy corn in Egypt. But Benjamin, Joseph's brother, 00:09:30.83\00:09:35.12 Jacob sent not with his brethren for he said, Lest peradventure 00:09:35.15\00:09:39.57 mischief befall him. And the sons of Israel came to buy corn 00:09:39.60\00:09:43.64 among those that came: for the famine was in the land of Canaan 00:09:43.67\00:09:46.74 and Joseph was the governor over the land, and he it was that 00:09:46.77\00:09:51.04 sold to all the people of the land: and Joseph's brethren came 00:09:51.07\00:09:54.59 and bowed down themselves before him with their faces to the 00:09:54.62\00:09:59.50 earth. And Joseph saw his brethren, and he knew them, 00:09:59.53\00:10:03.06 but made himself strange unto them and spake roughly unto them 00:10:03.09\00:10:07.31 and he said unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the 00:10:07.34\00:10:10.74 land of Canaan to buy food. And Joseph knew his brethren, 00:10:10.77\00:10:14.25 but they knew not him. And Joseph remembered the dreams 00:10:14.28\00:10:18.83 which he dreamed of them, and he said unto them, Ye are spies; 00:10:18.86\00:10:22.77 to see the nakedness of the land ye are come. 00:10:22.80\00:10:25.47 And they said unto him, Nay, my Lord, but to buy food are thy 00:10:25.50\00:10:30.28 servants come. We are all one man's sons; we are true men, 00:10:30.31\00:10:34.68 thy servants are no spies. And he said unto them, Nay, but to 00:10:34.71\00:10:40.22 see the nakedness of the land ye are come. And they said, 00:10:40.25\00:10:43.28 Thy servants are 12 brethren, the sons of one man 00:10:43.31\00:10:46.70 in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day 00:10:46.73\00:10:51.72 with our father, and one is not. 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.84 and Joseph said unto them, That is it that I spake unto you 00:10:53.88\00:10:59.05 saying, Ye are spies: Hereby ye shall be proved: By the life of 00:10:59.08\00:11:03.80 Pharaoh ye shall not go forth hence, except your youngest 00:11:03.83\00:11:06.76 brother come hither. Send one of you, and let him fetch your 00:11:06.79\00:11:11.13 brother, and ye shall be kept in prison, that your words may be 00:11:11.16\00:11:13.86 proved, whether there be any truth in you: or else by the 00:11:13.89\00:11:17.22 life of Pharaoh surely ye are spies. And he put them all 00:11:17.25\00:11:21.41 together into ward three days. And Joseph said unto them 00:11:21.44\00:11:25.85 the third day, This do and live; for I fear God: If ye be true 00:11:25.88\00:11:29.68 men, let one of your brethren be bound in the house of your 00:11:29.71\00:11:32.85 prison: go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houses: 00:11:32.88\00:11:36.64 But bring your youngest brother unto me; so shall your words 00:11:36.67\00:11:40.91 be verified, and ye shall not die. And they did so. 00:11:40.94\00:11:44.93 And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning 00:11:44.96\00:11:49.51 our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he 00:11:49.54\00:11:53.70 besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress 00:11:53.73\00:11:57.84 come upon us. And Reuben answered them, saying, 00:11:57.87\00:12:01.97 Spake I not unto you, saying, Do not sin against the child; 00:12:02.00\00:12:05.46 and ye would not hear? therefore, behold, also 00:12:05.49\00:12:08.67 his blood is required. And they knew not that Joseph understood 00:12:08.70\00:12:13.29 them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter. 00:12:13.32\00:12:16.78 And he turned himself about from them, and wept; 00:12:16.81\00:12:19.91 and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took 00:12:19.94\00:12:23.44 from Simeon, and bound him before their eyes. 00:12:23.47\00:12:27.20 Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, 00:12:27.23\00:12:31.29 and to restore every man's money into his sack, 00:12:31.32\00:12:33.79 and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he 00:12:33.82\00:12:36.48 unto them. And they laded their asses with the corn, 00:12:36.51\00:12:39.51 and departed thence. And as one of them opened his sack to give 00:12:39.54\00:12:43.56 his ass provender in the inn, he espied his money; 00:12:43.59\00:12:47.16 for, behold, it was in his sack's mouth. 00:12:47.19\00:12:49.72 And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; 00:12:49.75\00:12:52.55 and lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, 00:12:52.58\00:12:57.11 and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this 00:12:57.14\00:13:01.24 that God hath done unto us? And they came unto Jacob 00:13:01.27\00:13:05.07 their father unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that 00:13:05.10\00:13:08.14 befell unto them; saying, The man, who is the lord of the land 00:13:08.17\00:13:12.55 spake roughly to us, and took us for spies of the country. 00:13:12.58\00:13:16.12 And we said unto him, We are true men; we are no spies: 00:13:16.15\00:13:19.56 We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, 00:13:19.59\00:13:23.30 and the youngest is this day with our father in the land 00:13:23.33\00:13:26.41 of Canaan. And the man, the lord of the country, 00:13:26.44\00:13:29.51 said unto us, Hereby shall I know that ye are true men; 00:13:29.54\00:13:32.64 leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the 00:13:32.67\00:13:35.95 famine of your households, and be gone: And bring your youngest 00:13:35.98\00:13:38.77 brother unto me: then shall I know that ye are no spies, 00:13:38.80\00:13:42.12 but that ye are true men: so will I deliver you your brother, 00:13:42.15\00:13:46.27 and ye shall traffick in the land. And it came to pass 00:13:46.30\00:13:49.50 as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle 00:13:49.53\00:13:53.94 of money was in his sack: and when both they and their father 00:13:53.97\00:13:57.56 saw the bundles of money, they were afraid. And Jacob their 00:13:57.59\00:14:01.21 father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: 00:14:01.24\00:14:04.68 Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin 00:14:04.71\00:14:08.46 away: all these things are against me. And Reuben spake 00:14:08.49\00:14:12.81 unto his father, saying, Slay my two sons, if I bring him not 00:14:12.84\00:14:16.32 to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him 00:14:16.35\00:14:19.87 to thee again. And he said, My son shall not go down with you; 00:14:19.90\00:14:24.58 for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief 00:14:24.61\00:14:28.57 befall him by the way in which ye go, then shall ye bring down 00:14:28.60\00:14:32.40 my gray hairs with sorrow to the grave. 00:14:32.43\00:14:34.62
