Hi, I'm Kelly Mowrer and welcome back to His Words are Life. 00:00:17.13\00:00:20.54 Before we read, Let's pray today. Dear God, please be with 00:00:20.57\00:00:25.66 us as we read the stories of Genesis together 00:00:25.69\00:00:30.11 and some of them are more difficult to understand 00:00:30.14\00:00:33.66 than others. But you've preserved them here in 00:00:33.69\00:00:36.63 in your book for instructing us and for teaching us something 00:00:36.66\00:00:40.51 that you want us to know. So please send your Holy Spirit 00:00:40.54\00:00:43.38 to be with our minds and our hearts as we read today, 00:00:43.41\00:00:46.33 and to guide us into truth. We love you so much 00:00:46.36\00:00:49.50 and thank you for loving us. Amen. 00:00:49.53\00:00:51.46 We're going to be reading today one of my favorite stories 00:00:51.49\00:00:55.37 in the bible, which is the story of Joseph and how as Joseph 00:00:55.40\00:00:59.20 sought to do the right thing, he found himself constantly 00:00:59.23\00:01:03.22 facing new trials. But at the every setback there is a phrase 00:01:03.25\00:01:07.55 in the story that says, And the Lord was with Joseph. 00:01:07.58\00:01:10.46 And I've often found comfort in that myself when things don't 00:01:10.49\00:01:14.47 seem to be making sense, the Lord is still with us. 00:01:14.50\00:01:16.90 But before we go on to the story of Joseph we're 00:01:16.93\00:01:19.58 in the middle of where we left off of last time of the story 00:01:19.61\00:01:22.69 of Judah and his sons. He had three sons. The oldest married 00:01:22.72\00:01:27.76 a woman named Tamar and died without leaving her children, 00:01:27.79\00:01:31.04 the second one went in to give her children, but fixed it so 00:01:31.07\00:01:35.16 that he didn't; but God was displeased with that so he died 00:01:35.19\00:01:38.57 as well. But Judah said to Tamar, you know, Go be with 00:01:38.60\00:01:42.34 your father until my other son is old enough. But when his old, 00:01:42.37\00:01:45.61 his younger son grew to be old enough to provide a child 00:01:45.64\00:01:49.05 of Tamar, he didn't - Judah didn't see that happened. 00:01:49.08\00:01:53.27 So Tamar, hearing that Judah was visiting in the town near by 00:01:53.30\00:01:57.37 decided to take it upon herself to get children, she put off her 00:01:57.41\00:02:02.56 mourning clothes and covered her face with a veil and went 00:02:02.59\00:02:05.27 and sat where Judah would see her. And because her face was 00:02:05.30\00:02:08.75 covered with a veil, Judah took her for a prostitute. 00:02:08.78\00:02:11.84 So now, we're picking up the story in Genesis, chapter 38, 00:02:11.87\00:02:15.39 This is the King James Version. And we're starting with verse 16 00:02:15.42\00:02:19.94 And he, Judah, turned unto her by the way, and said, Go to, 00:02:19.97\00:02:27.73 I pray thee, let me come in unto thee; for he knew not that she 00:02:27.76\00:02:31.69 was his daughter in law. And she said, What wilt thou give me 00:02:31.72\00:02:35.27 that thou mayest come in unto me? And he said, I will send 00:02:35.30\00:02:39.27 thee a kid from the flock. And she said, Wilt thou give me a 00:02:39.30\00:02:42.47 pledge, till thou send it? And he said, What pledge shall I 00:02:42.50\00:02:46.14 give thee? And she said, Thy signet, and thy bracelets, 00:02:46.17\00:02:50.46 and thy staff that is in thine hand. And he gave it her, 00:02:50.49\00:02:54.37 and came in unto her, and she conceived by him. 00:02:54.40\00:02:58.56 And she arose, and went away, and laid by her veil from her, 00:02:58.59\00:03:02.46 and put on the garments of her widowhood. 00:03:02.49\00:03:04.67 And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adulamite 00:03:04.70\00:03:09.06 to receive his pledge from the woman's hand; but he found her 00:03:09.09\00:03:12.74 not. Then he asked the men of that place, saying, Where is the 00:03:12.77\00:03:17.17 harlot, that was openly by the wayside? And they said, 00:03:17.20\00:03:20.00 There was no harlot in this place. And he returned to 00:03:20.03\00:03:23.59 Judah, and said, I cannot find her; and also the men of the 00:03:23.62\00:03:26.99 place said that there was no harlot in this place. 00:03:27.02\00:03:28.98 And Judah said, Let her take it to her, lest we be shamed: 00:03:29.01\00:03:33.07 behold, I sent his kid, and thou hast not found her. 00:03:33.10\00:03:36.00 And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told 00:03:36.03\00:03:40.48 Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law 00:03:40.51\00:03:43.79 has played the harlot; and also, behold, she is with child by 00:03:43.82\00:03:47.61 whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt. 00:03:47.64\00:03:51.46 When she was brought forth, she sent to her father in law 00:03:51.49\00:03:55.78 saying, By the man, whose these are, am I with child: 00:03:55.81\00:04:00.74 And she said, Discern, I pray thee, whose are these, 00:04:00.77\00:04:05.40 the signet, and bracelets, and staff. And Judah acknowledged 00:04:05.43\00:04:10.66 them, and said, She hath been more righteous than I; 00:04:10.69\00:04:14.20 because that I gave her not to Shelah my son. And he knew 00:04:14.23\00:04:19.07 her again no more. And it came to pass in the time of her 00:04:19.10\00:04:21.75 travail, that, behold, twins were in her womb. 00:04:21.78\00:04:25.07 And it came to pass, when she travailed, that the one put out 00:04:25.10\00:04:29.78 his hand: and the midwife took and bound upon his hand 00:04:29.81\00:04:33.80 a scarlet thread, saying, This came out first. And it came to 00:04:33.83\00:04:38.38 pass, as he drew back his hand, that behold his brother came out 00:04:38.41\00:04:41.61 and she said, How hast thou broken forth? this breach 00:04:41.64\00:04:45.69 be upon thee: therefore his name was called Pharez. 00:04:45.72\00:04:48.72 And afterward came out his brother, that had the scarlet 00:04:48.75\00:04:52.26 thread upon his hand: and his name was called Zerah. 00:04:52.29\00:04:56.28 We're continuing now in Genesis, chapter 39, 00:04:56.31\00:04:59.80 And this is the King James Version. 00:04:59.83\00:05:01.34 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt; and Potiphar, and officer 00:05:01.37\00:05:06.83 of Pharaoh, captain of the guard, and Egyptian, 00:05:06.86\00:05:09.66 bought him of the hands of the Ishmaelites, which had brought 00:05:09.69\00:05:13.86 him down thither. And the Lord was with Joseph, 00:05:13.89\00:05:17.38 and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his 00:05:17.41\00:05:21.22 master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the Lord 00:05:21.25\00:05:25.25 was with him, and that the Lord made all that he did to prosper 00:05:25.28\00:05:28.68 in his hand. And Joseph found grace in his sight, 00:05:28.71\00:05:32.85 and he served him: and he made him overseer over his 00:05:32.88\00:05:36.99 house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 00:05:37.02\00:05:39.95 And it came to pass from the time that he had made him 00:05:39.98\00:05:44.16 overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that the Lord 00:05:44.19\00:05:47.57 blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing 00:05:47.60\00:05:51.74 of the Lord was upon all that he had in the house, 00:05:51.77\00:05:54.28 and in the field. And he left all that he had in Joseph's hand 00:05:54.31\00:05:58.02 and he knew not aught he had, save the bread which he did eat. 00:05:58.05\00:06:01.14 And Joseph was a goodly person, and well favoured. 00:06:01.17\00:06:04.79 And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife 00:06:04.82\00:06:08.98 cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me. 00:06:09.01\00:06:12.32 But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, 00:06:12.35\00:06:16.09 my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he 00:06:16.12\00:06:19.53 hath committed all that he hath to my hand: There is none 00:06:19.56\00:06:22.88 greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back 00:06:22.91\00:06:25.68 anything from me but thee, because thou art his wife: 00:06:25.71\00:06:28.82 how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? 00:06:28.85\00:06:34.94 And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, 00:06:34.97\00:06:40.09 that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her or to be with her. 00:06:40.12\00:06:44.46 And it came to pass about this time, that Joseph went into the 00:06:44.49\00:06:48.22 house to do his business; and there was none of the men of 00:06:48.25\00:06:50.49 the house there within. And she caught him by his garment, 00:06:50.52\00:06:54.67 saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, 00:06:54.70\00:06:58.67 and fled, and got him out. And it came to pass, when she saw 00:06:58.70\00:07:04.25 that he had left his garment in her hand, and was fled forth 00:07:04.28\00:07:06.95 that she called unto the men of her house, and spake unto 00:07:06.98\00:07:09.99 them, saying, See, he hath brought in an Hebrew unto us 00:07:10.02\00:07:13.00 to mock us; he came in unto me to lie with me, and I cried 00:07:13.03\00:07:16.30 with a loud voice: And it came to pass, when he heard that I 00:07:16.33\00:07:19.48 lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment with me 00:07:19.51\00:07:22.43 and fled, and got him out. And she laid up his garment by her, 00:07:22.46\00:07:26.46 until his lord came home. And she spake unto him, according 00:07:26.49\00:07:30.84 to these words, saying, The Hebrew servant, which thou 00:07:30.87\00:07:33.74 hast brought unto us, came in unto me to mock me: And it came 00:07:33.77\00:07:37.57 to pass as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his 00:07:37.60\00:07:40.33 garment with me, and fled out. And it came to pass, when his 00:07:40.36\00:07:44.77 master heard the words of his wife, which she spake unto him, 00:07:44.80\00:07:47.94 saying, After this manner did thy servant to me; 00:07:47.97\00:07:51.03 that his wrath was kindled. And Joseph's master took him, 00:07:51.06\00:07:56.06 and put him into the prison, a place where the king's 00:07:56.09\00:07:59.89 prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison. 00:07:59.92\00:08:03.71 But the Lord was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy, 00:08:03.74\00:08:07.73 and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 00:08:07.76\00:08:11.24 And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand 00:08:11.27\00:08:14.80 all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they 00:08:14.83\00:08:18.24 did there, he was the doer of it. The keeper of the prison 00:08:18.27\00:08:22.09 looked not to any thing that was under his hand: because 00:08:22.12\00:08:24.55 the Lord was with him, and that which he did, the Lord made it 00:08:24.58\00:08:28.43 to prosper. Continuing to read how the Lord was with Joseph. 00:08:28.46\00:08:33.10 Chapter 40, in the book of Genesis, 00:08:33.13\00:08:35.10 and this is the King James Version. 00:08:35.13\00:08:36.35 And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the 00:08:36.38\00:08:41.34 king of Egypt and his baker had offended their lord the king of 00:08:41.37\00:08:45.30 Egypt. And Pharaoh was wroth against two of his officers, 00:08:45.33\00:08:48.80 against the chief of the butlers, and against the 00:08:48.83\00:08:50.85 chief of the bakers. And he put them in ward in the house of the 00:08:50.88\00:08:54.53 captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph 00:08:54.56\00:08:57.08 was bound. And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with 00:08:57.11\00:09:01.09 them: and he served him and they continued a season in the ward. 00:09:01.12\00:09:04.41 And they dreamed a dream, both of them, each man his dream 00:09:04.44\00:09:09.27 in one night, each man according to the interpretation 00:09:09.30\00:09:12.53 of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, 00:09:12.56\00:09:15.84 which were bound in the prison. And Joseph came in unto them 00:09:15.87\00:09:20.04 in the morning, and looked upon them and, behold, they were sad. 00:09:20.07\00:09:22.82 And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in the ward 00:09:22.85\00:09:26.66 of his lord's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sadly, 00:09:26.69\00:09:30.15 today? And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, 00:09:30.18\00:09:33.71 and there is no interpreter of it. And Joseph said unto them, 00:09:33.74\00:09:37.65 Do not interpretations belong to God? tell me them, I pray you. 00:09:37.68\00:09:42.19 And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him 00:09:42.22\00:09:46.22 In my dream, behold a vine was before me; And in the vine were 00:09:46.25\00:09:51.09 three branches: and it was as though it budded, and her 00:09:51.12\00:09:54.85 blossoms shot forth; and the clusters thereof brought forth 00:09:54.88\00:09:57.72 ripe grapes: And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand: and I took the 00:09:57.75\00:10:01.44 grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave 00:10:01.47\00:10:03.94 the cup into Pharaoh's hand. And Joseph said unto him, 00:10:03.97\00:10:08.10 This is the interpretation of it: The three branches are 00:10:08.13\00:10:12.35 three days: Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine 00:10:12.38\00:10:15.97 head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver 00:10:16.00\00:10:19.82 Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner 00:10:19.85\00:10:22.52 when thou wast his butler. But think on me when it shall be 00:10:22.55\00:10:27.68 well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, 00:10:27.71\00:10:30.87 and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of 00:10:30.90\00:10:33.62 this house: for indeed I was stolen away out of the land 00:10:33.65\00:10:37.00 of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they 00:10:37.03\00:10:41.16 should put me into the dungeon. 00:10:41.19\00:10:42.91 When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, 00:10:42.94\00:10:47.74 he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, 00:10:47.77\00:10:50.81 I had three white baskets on my head: And in the uppermost 00:10:50.84\00:10:54.80 basket there was of all manner of bakemeats for Pharaoh; 00:10:54.83\00:10:58.41 and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head. 00:10:58.44\00:11:01.82 And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation 00:11:01.85\00:11:05.75 thereof: The three baskets are three days: Yet within three 00:11:05.78\00:11:09.57 days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, 00:11:09.60\00:11:12.92 and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy 00:11:12.95\00:11:16.49 flesh from off thee. And it came to pass the third day, 00:11:16.52\00:11:20.76 which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all 00:11:20.79\00:11:24.35 his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and 00:11:24.38\00:11:27.81 the chief baker among his servants. And he restored 00:11:27.84\00:11:31.12 the chief butler unto his butlership again; 00:11:31.15\00:11:33.61 and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand: 00:11:33.64\00:11:36.27 But he hanged the chief baker as Joseph had interpreted to them. 00:11:36.30\00:11:41.03 Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him. 00:11:41.06\00:11:46.52 Genesis, chapter 41. This is The King James Version. 00:11:46.55\00:11:50.83 And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh 00:11:50.86\00:11:56.34 dreamed: and, behold, he stood by the river. And, behold, there 00:11:56.37\00:11:59.95 came up out of the river seven well favored kine and fatfleshed 00:11:59.98\00:12:05.43 and they fed in a meadow. And, behold, seven other kine came 00:12:05.46\00:12:10.32 up after them out of the river, ill favored and leanfleshed: 00:12:10.35\00:12:14.03 and stood by the other kine upon the brink of the river. 00:12:14.06\00:12:17.31 And the ill favored and lean fleshed kine did eat up the 00:12:17.34\00:12:21.73 seven well favored and fat kine. So Pharaoh awoke. And he slept 00:12:21.76\00:12:27.57 and dreamed the second time: and behold, seven ears of corn came 00:12:27.60\00:12:31.85 up upon one stalk, rank and good. And, behold, seven thin 00:12:31.88\00:12:37.47 ears and blasted with the east wind sprung up after them. 00:12:37.50\00:12:41.35 And the seven thin ears devoured the seven rank and full ears. 00:12:41.38\00:12:46.65 And Pharaoh awoke, and, behold, it was a dream. 00:12:46.69\00:12:50.09 And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was 00:12:50.15\00:12:54.08 troubled: and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, 00:12:54.11\00:12:58.13 and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; 00:12:58.16\00:13:01.56 but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh. 00:13:01.59\00:13:04.89 Then spake the chief butler unto Pharaoh, saying, I do remember 00:13:04.92\00:13:11.11 my faults this day: Pharaoh was wroth with his servants, and 00:13:11.14\00:13:15.51 put me in a ward in the captain of the guard's house, both me 00:13:15.54\00:13:18.93 and the chief baker: And we dreamed a dream in one night, 00:13:18.96\00:13:21.60 I and he; we dreamed each man according to the interpretation 00:13:21.63\00:13:25.40 of his dream. And there was there with us a young man, 00:13:25.43\00:13:28.40 a Hebrew, servant to the captain of the guard; and we told him, 00:13:28.43\00:13:32.76 and he interpreted to us our dreams; to each man according 00:13:32.79\00:13:37.07 to his dream he did interpret. And it came to pass, as he 00:13:37.10\00:13:41.78 interpreted to us, so it was; me he restored unto mine office, 00:13:41.81\00:13:46.69 and him he hanged. Then Pharaoh sent and called Joseph, 00:13:46.72\00:13:51.65 and they brought him hastily out of the dungeon: and he shaved 00:13:51.68\00:13:55.71 himself and changed his raiment, and came in unto Pharaoh. 00:13:55.74\00:13:59.28 And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I have dreamed a dream, 00:13:59.31\00:14:02.98 and there is none that can interpret it: and I have heard 00:14:03.01\00:14:05.62 say of thee, that thou canst understand a dream to interpret 00:14:05.65\00:14:09.05 it. And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: 00:14:09.08\00:14:15.09 God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace. And Pharaoh said unto 00:14:15.12\00:14:21.40 Joseph, In my dream, behold, I stood upon the bank of the river 00:14:21.43\00:14:25.40 We'll continue with the dream next time. But until we're 00:14:25.43\00:14:28.74 together again, may God bless you and keep you in His peace. 00:14:28.77\00:14:31.51 Thank you for joining me. Goodbye. 00:14:31.54\00:14:35.26
