Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life. 00:00:17.38\00:00:19.58 I'm Kelly Mowrer and thank you for joining with me today 00:00:19.61\00:00:23.22 to read the Word of God. Before we start let's pray together. 00:00:23.25\00:00:25.56 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for the wisdom that we are 00:00:25.59\00:00:30.35 going to read right now in these words, wisdom that comes from 00:00:30.38\00:00:34.72 You that is profitable to us, helps to make us more pure 00:00:34.75\00:00:40.15 and more usable by you. Please be with us now as we read 00:00:40.18\00:00:44.44 and change our hearts. We love you so much and thank you for 00:00:44.47\00:00:48.55 loving us. Amen 00:00:48.58\00:00:49.83 When we left off we were reading the account of Jacob taking Leah 00:00:49.86\00:00:54.80 and Rachael and fleeing, and Laban has pursued him, and 00:00:54.83\00:00:59.13 they are having some words about some stolen images and about 00:01:00.18\00:01:03.43 the wages that Laban gypped Jacob out of all those years. 00:01:03.46\00:01:09.34 We're picking up the story here in Genesis 31 verse 44. 00:01:09.37\00:01:14.56 And Laban is talking he says, Now therefore come thou, 00:01:14.59\00:01:18.71 let us make a covenant, I and thou. And let it be 00:01:18.74\00:01:22.69 And let it be for a witness between me and thee. 00:01:22.72\00:01:24.76 And Jacob took a stone and set it up for a pillar. And Jacob 00:01:24.79\00:01:29.11 said unto his brethren, Gather stones. And they took stones 00:01:29.14\00:01:33.13 and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap 00:01:33.16\00:01:36.64 and Laban called it Jegarsahadutha. 00:01:36.67\00:01:40.70 but Jacob called it Galeed. And Laban said, this heap 00:01:40.73\00:01:45.96 is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name 00:01:45.99\00:01:50.47 of it called Galeed; And Mizpah; for he said, The Lord watch 00:01:50.50\00:01:55.74 between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. If thou 00:01:55.77\00:02:01.06 shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives 00:02:01.09\00:02:03.85 beside my daughters, no man is with us; 00:02:03.88\00:02:06.87 see, God is witness betwixt me and thee. 00:02:06.90\00:02:10.73 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap and behold this pillar 00:02:10.76\00:02:15.42 which I have cast betwixt me and thee; This heap be witness, and 00:02:15.45\00:02:20.85 this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap 00:02:20.88\00:02:24.48 to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap 00:02:24.51\00:02:27.47 and this pillar unto me, for harm. 00:02:27.50\00:02:29.57 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, 00:02:29.60\00:02:32.54 the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware 00:02:32.57\00:02:36.77 by the fear of his father Isaac. Then Jacob offered sacrifice 00:02:36.80\00:02:40.68 upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: 00:02:40.71\00:02:43.40 and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. 00:02:43.43\00:02:47.78 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons 00:02:47.81\00:02:51.12 and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, 00:02:51.15\00:02:55.03 and returned unto his place. 00:02:55.06\00:02:57.27 We're continuing to read now in the book of Genesis, chapter 32 00:02:57.30\00:03:02.07 and this is the King James version. 00:03:02.10\00:03:04.01 And Jacob went on his way, and the angels of God met him. 00:03:04.04\00:03:08.59 And when Jacob saw them, he said, This is God's host: 00:03:08.62\00:03:12.10 and he called the name of that place Mahanaim. 00:03:12.13\00:03:15.64 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother 00:03:15.67\00:03:20.09 unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom. 00:03:20.12\00:03:22.92 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak 00:03:22.95\00:03:26.45 unto my Lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, 00:03:26.48\00:03:30.20 I have sojourned with Laban and stayed there until now: 00:03:30.23\00:03:33.94 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, 00:03:33.97\00:03:37.77 and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, 00:03:37.80\00:03:41.36 that I may find grace in thy sight. And the messengers 00:03:41.39\00:03:45.26 returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, 00:03:45.29\00:03:48.74 and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. 00:03:48.77\00:03:53.82 Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: 00:03:53.85\00:03:58.06 and he divided the people that was with him, and the flocks, 00:03:58.09\00:04:01.25 and herds, and the camels, into two bands; and said, 00:04:01.28\00:04:04.88 If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, 00:04:04.91\00:04:08.23 then the other company which is left shall escape. 00:04:08.26\00:04:11.49 And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of 00:04:11.52\00:04:16.20 my father Isaac, the Lord which saidst unto me, Return unto thy 00:04:16.23\00:04:20.55 country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee: 00:04:20.58\00:04:23.41 I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies, and of all the 00:04:23.44\00:04:28.32 truth, which thou has shewed unto thy servant; 00:04:28.35\00:04:30.95 for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become 00:04:30.98\00:04:35.65 two bands. Deliver me, I pray thee, 00:04:35.68\00:04:39.14 from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: 00:04:39.17\00:04:41.66 for I fear him, lest he will come and smite me and 00:04:41.69\00:04:46.04 the mother with the children. And thou saidst, I will surely 00:04:46.07\00:04:49.34 do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, 00:04:49.37\00:04:52.27 which cannot be numbered for multitude. And he lodged there 00:04:52.30\00:04:56.32 that same night; and took of that which came to his hand 00:04:56.35\00:05:00.28 a present for Esau his brother; Two hundred she goats, and 00:05:00.31\00:05:04.35 twenty he goats, two hundred ewes, and twenty rams, 00:05:04.38\00:05:07.68 Thirty milch camels with their colts, forty kine, and ten bulls 00:05:07.71\00:05:11.49 twenty she asses, and ten foals. And he delivered them unto the 00:05:11.52\00:05:16.14 hand of his servants, every drove by themselves; 00:05:16.17\00:05:19.31 and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, 00:05:19.34\00:05:22.68 and put a space betwixt drove and drove. And he commanded 00:05:22.71\00:05:27.40 the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee 00:05:27.43\00:05:30.80 and asketh thee, saying. Whose art thou and whither goest thou? 00:05:30.83\00:05:34.70 and whose are these before thee? Then thou shalt say, 00:05:34.73\00:05:38.35 They be thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord 00:05:38.38\00:05:43.06 Esau: and, behold, also he is behind us. 00:05:43.09\00:05:46.95 And so commanded he the second, and the third, 00:05:46.98\00:05:50.78 and all that followed the droves saying, On this manner shall ye 00:05:50.81\00:05:55.51 speak unto Esau, when ye find him. And say ye moreover, 00:05:55.54\00:05:59.87 behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, 00:05:59.90\00:06:04.30 I will appease him with the present that goeth before me. 00:06:04.33\00:06:07.65 And afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will 00:06:07.68\00:06:11.54 accept of me. So went the present over before him: 00:06:11.57\00:06:16.19 and himself lodged that night in the company. 00:06:16.23\00:06:20.12 And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, 00:06:20.15\00:06:23.66 and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, 00:06:23.69\00:06:26.98 and passed over the ford Jabbok. And he took them, and sent them 00:06:27.01\00:06:31.56 over the brook, and sent over that he had. 00:06:31.59\00:06:35.17 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him 00:06:35.20\00:06:40.92 until the breaking of the day. 00:06:40.95\00:06:43.39 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, 00:06:43.42\00:06:47.11 he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's 00:06:47.14\00:06:51.69 thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 00:06:51.72\00:06:54.44 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, 00:06:54.47\00:06:59.14 I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 00:06:59.17\00:07:02.73 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 00:07:02.76\00:07:07.52 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel 00:07:07.55\00:07:12.69 for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, 00:07:12.72\00:07:17.07 and hast prevailed. And Jacob asked him, and said, 00:07:17.10\00:07:20.96 Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it 00:07:20.99\00:07:25.90 that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. 00:07:25.93\00:07:29.80 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel for I have seen God 00:07:29.83\00:07:35.23 face to face, and my life is preserved. 00:07:35.26\00:07:38.46 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, 00:07:38.49\00:07:43.05 and he halted upon his thigh. Therefore the children of Israel 00:07:43.08\00:07:47.73 eat not of the sinew which shrank, which if upon the hollow 00:07:47.76\00:07:51.02 of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow 00:07:51.05\00:07:54.93 of Jacob's thigh in the sinew that shrank. 00:07:54.96\00:07:57.80 We are continuing to read in Genesis, chapter 33. 00:07:57.83\00:08:02.11 And this is the King James version. 00:08:02.14\00:08:03.44 And Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold, Esau 00:08:03.47\00:08:09.32 came and with him four hundred men. And he divided the children 00:08:09.35\00:08:13.65 unto Leah, and unto Rachael and unto the two handmaids. 00:08:13.68\00:08:16.77 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, 00:08:16.80\00:08:19.89 and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Joseph hindermost 00:08:19.92\00:08:25.03 And he passed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground 00:08:25.06\00:08:28.88 seven times, until he came near to his brother. And Esau ran 00:08:28.91\00:08:34.43 to meet him and embraced him, and fell on his neck, 00:08:34.46\00:08:37.71 and kissed him: and they wept. And he lifted up his eyes, 00:08:37.74\00:08:42.97 and saw the children and the women and said, 00:08:43.00\00:08:45.09 Who are those with thee? And he said, The children which God 00:08:45.12\00:08:48.00 hath graciously given thy servant, Then the handmaidens 00:08:48.03\00:08:51.75 came near, they and their children, and they bowed 00:08:51.78\00:08:54.33 themselves. And Leah also with her children, and they bowed 00:08:54.36\00:08:58.56 themselves: and after came Joseph near and Rachel, 00:08:58.60\00:09:02.70 and they bowed themselves. And he said, What meanest thou 00:09:02.73\00:09:07.71 by all this drove which I met? And he said, These are to find 00:09:07.74\00:09:12.37 grace in the sight of my lord. And Esau said, I have enough, 00:09:12.40\00:09:17.48 my brother; keep that thou hast unto thyself. 00:09:17.51\00:09:21.21 And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee if now I have found grace 00:09:21.24\00:09:26.22 in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand: 00:09:26.25\00:09:29.83 for therefore I have seen thy face, as though I had seen 00:09:29.86\00:09:33.52 the face of God and thou wast pleased with me. 00:09:33.55\00:09:35.92 Take, I pray thee, my blessing that is brought to thee; 00:09:35.95\00:09:39.44 because God hath dealt graciously with me, 00:09:39.47\00:09:42.49 and because I have enough. And he urged him and he took it. 00:09:42.52\00:09:46.63 And he said, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and 00:09:46.66\00:09:49.98 I will go before thee. And he said unto him, My lord knoweth 00:09:50.01\00:09:54.39 that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds 00:09:54.42\00:09:56.88 with young are with me: and men should overdrive them 00:09:56.91\00:10:00.31 one day, all the flock will die. Let my lord, I pray thee, 00:10:00.34\00:10:04.24 pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, 00:10:04.27\00:10:07.75 according as the cattle that goeth before me 00:10:07.78\00:10:10.55 and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my 00:10:10.58\00:10:14.13 lord unto Seir. And Esau said, Let me now leave with thee 00:10:14.16\00:10:19.23 some of the folk that are with me. 00:10:19.26\00:10:20.93 And he said, What needeth it? Let me find grace in the sight 00:10:20.96\00:10:26.04 of my lord. So Esau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 00:10:26.07\00:10:31.30 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an house, 00:10:31.33\00:10:34.87 and made booths for his cattle: therefore the name of the place 00:10:34.90\00:10:38.80 is called Succoth. And Jacob came to Shalem, 00:10:38.83\00:10:42.06 a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he 00:10:42.09\00:10:46.52 came from Padanaram; and pitched his tent before the city 00:10:46.55\00:10:49.77 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had spread 00:10:49.80\00:10:53.27 his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechem's 00:10:53.30\00:10:56.51 father for an hundred pieces of money. 00:10:56.54\00:10:59.12 And he erected there an altar and called it Elelohe Israel. 00:10:59.15\00:11:04.07 Reading in Genesis, chapter 34. 00:11:04.10\00:11:07.67 And this is the King James version. 00:11:07.70\00:11:09.48 And Dinah, the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, 00:11:09.51\00:11:14.59 went out to see the daughters of the land. And when Shechem, 00:11:14.62\00:11:18.28 the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country saw her 00:11:18.31\00:11:22.00 he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her. 00:11:22.03\00:11:25.00 And his soul clave unto Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, 00:11:25.03\00:11:28.88 and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel. 00:11:28.91\00:11:32.65 And Shechem spake unto his father, Hamor, saying, Get me 00:11:32.68\00:11:36.70 this damsel to wife. And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah 00:11:36.73\00:11:41.44 his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: 00:11:41.47\00:11:45.10 and Jacob held his peace until they were come. 00:11:45.13\00:11:48.21 And Hamor the father of Shechem, went out unto Jacob to commune 00:11:48.24\00:11:52.67 with him. And the sons of Jacob came out of the field 00:11:52.70\00:11:56.13 when they heard it: and the men were grieved, 00:11:56.16\00:11:59.06 and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly 00:11:59.09\00:12:02.03 in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; 00:12:02.06\00:12:04.40 which thing ought not to be done. And Hamor communed 00:12:04.43\00:12:09.29 with them, saying, The soul of my son, Shechem longeth for 00:12:09.32\00:12:12.87 your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife. 00:12:12.90\00:12:16.46 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, 00:12:16.49\00:12:19.71 and take our daughters unto you. And ye shall dwell with us: 00:12:19.74\00:12:23.24 and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye 00:12:23.27\00:12:26.89 therein, and get you possessions therein. 00:12:26.92\00:12:29.87 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, 00:12:29.90\00:12:34.86 Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me 00:12:34.89\00:12:38.44 I will give. Ask me never so much dowry and gift, 00:12:38.47\00:12:42.48 and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: 00:12:42.51\00:12:44.65 but give me the damsel to wife. And the sons of Jacob answered 00:12:44.68\00:12:49.67 Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because 00:12:49.70\00:12:54.79 he had defiled Dinah their sister: 00:12:54.82\00:12:56.28 And they said unto them, we cannot do this thing, 00:12:56.31\00:12:59.44 to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; 00:12:59.47\00:13:02.10 for that were a reproach unto us but in this will we consent unto 00:13:02.13\00:13:06.52 you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be 00:13:06.55\00:13:10.73 circumcised; then will we give our daughters unto you, 00:13:10.76\00:13:13.82 and we will take your daughters unto us, and we will dwell 00:13:13.85\00:13:16.03 with you, and we will become as one people. But if ye will not 00:13:16.06\00:13:20.82 hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we 00:13:20.85\00:13:24.11 take our daughter, and we will be gone. 00:13:24.14\00:13:25.99 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem, Hamor's son. 00:13:26.02\00:13:30.15 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had 00:13:30.18\00:13:33.11 delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable 00:13:33.14\00:13:35.62 than all the house of his father. And Hamor and Shechem 00:13:35.65\00:13:39.34 his son came unto the gate of their city, an communed with 00:13:39.37\00:13:42.36 the men of their city, saying, These men are peacable with us. 00:13:42.39\00:13:45.71 therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; 00:13:45.74\00:13:49.36 for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; 00:13:49.39\00:13:51.97 let us take their daughters to us for wives, 00:13:52.00\00:13:54.87 and let us give them our daughters. 00:13:54.90\00:13:56.36 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, 00:13:56.39\00:14:00.85 to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, 00:14:00.88\00:14:05.15 as they are circumcised. Shall not their cattle 00:14:05.18\00:14:08.75 and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? 00:14:08.78\00:14:11.94 only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us. 00:14:11.97\00:14:16.13 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all 00:14:16.16\00:14:20.68 that went out of the gate of his city; 00:14:20.71\00:14:22.91 and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate 00:14:22.94\00:14:26.93 of his city.
