Amen. 00:00:50.61\00:00:53.83 I'm reading today from Genesis, and when we left off 00:00:54.03\00:00:58.01 we had just read the story of Abraham 00:00:58.11\00:00:59.87 and his obedience to God even to the point of being willing 00:00:59.97\00:01:03.15 to sacrifice his only son when God told him to do so. 00:01:03.25\00:01:06.52 But God stopped him at the point that Abraham had fully displayed 00:01:06.72\00:01:10.30 his obedience, and then God blessed him... 00:01:10.40\00:01:12.68 and through him He's blessed us. 00:01:12.88\00:01:14.60 As we read together now, we continue with Abraham's story 00:01:14.80\00:01:17.75 in Genesis chapter 23, and this is the King James version. 00:01:17.85\00:01:21.69 And Sarah was a hundred and seven and twenty years old: 00:01:21.99\00:01:25.68 these were the years of the life of Sarah. 00:01:25.88\00:01:28.63 And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; 00:01:28.84\00:01:30.82 the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.33 and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her. 00:01:33.43\00:01:36.63 And Abraham stood up from before his dead, 00:01:36.83\00:01:39.55 and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying, 00:01:39.75\00:01:41.82 "I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession 00:01:42.02\00:01:46.66 of a burying place with you, that I may bury my dead 00:01:46.76\00:01:49.61 out of my sight. " 00:01:49.71\00:01:51.35 And the children of Heth answered Abraham, 00:01:51.55\00:01:53.40 saying unto him, "Hear us, my lord: 00:01:53.61\00:01:55.73 thou art a mighty prince among us: 00:01:55.93\00:01:58.23 in the choice of our sepulchers bury thy dead; 00:01:58.43\00:02:00.81 none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulcher, 00:02:01.01\00:02:04.18 but that thou mayest bury thy dead. " 00:02:04.38\00:02:06.46 And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself 00:02:06.76\00:02:10.48 to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth. 00:02:10.58\00:02:13.58 And he communed with them, saying, 00:02:13.78\00:02:15.73 "If it be your mind that I should bury my dead 00:02:15.93\00:02:19.11 out of my sight; hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron 00:02:19.21\00:02:23.72 the son of Zohar, That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, 00:02:23.82\00:02:27.51 which he hath, which is in the end of his field; 00:02:27.61\00:02:30.37 for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me 00:02:30.57\00:02:34.09 for a possession of a burying place amongst you. " 00:02:34.19\00:02:36.84 And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: 00:02:37.04\00:02:39.21 and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience 00:02:39.32\00:02:42.38 of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the 00:02:42.49\00:02:45.53 gate of his city, saying, "Nay, my lord, hear me: 00:02:45.63\00:02:48.77 the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, 00:02:48.97\00:02:53.09 I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people 00:02:53.29\00:02:56.96 give I it thee: bury thy dead. " 00:02:57.06\00:03:00.80 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land. 00:03:01.00\00:03:04.20 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people 00:03:04.30\00:03:06.74 of the land, saying, "But if thou wilt give it, 00:03:06.84\00:03:09.32 I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.30 for the field: take it of me, and I will bury my dead there. " 00:03:12.40\00:03:16.13 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him, 00:03:16.33\00:03:19.91 "My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred 00:03:20.11\00:03:23.96 shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? 00:03:24.06\00:03:27.46 bury therefore thy dead. " 00:03:27.66\00:03:29.49 And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed 00:03:29.69\00:03:34.37 to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience 00:03:34.47\00:03:37.50 of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, 00:03:37.60\00:03:40.27 current money with the merchant. 00:03:40.37\00:03:42.36 And the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, 00:03:42.56\00:03:45.34 which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave 00:03:45.54\00:03:48.96 which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, 00:03:49.06\00:03:51.51 that were in all the borders round about, were made sure 00:03:51.71\00:03:55.34 unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children 00:03:55.44\00:03:58.76 of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city. 00:03:58.86\00:04:02.96 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave 00:04:03.16\00:04:07.50 of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: 00:04:07.60\00:04:09.78 the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. 00:04:09.98\00:04:12.80 And the field, and the cave that is therein, 00:04:13.01\00:04:15.26 were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a burying 00:04:15.36\00:04:18.86 place by the sons of Heth. 00:04:18.96\00:04:20.87 We are continuing to read in Genesis. 00:04:21.07\00:04:23.11 This is chapter 24, and this 00:04:23.14\00:04:24.93 is the King James version. 00:04:25.04\00:04:26.46 And Abraham was old, and well stricken in age: 00:04:26.75\00:04:31.60 and the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things. 00:04:31.80\00:04:34.53 And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, 00:04:34.63\00:04:38.06 that ruled over all that he had, 00:04:38.16\00:04:40.15 "Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: 00:04:40.35\00:04:43.52 And I will make thee swear by the Lord, 00:04:43.62\00:04:45.99 the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, 00:04:46.19\00:04:47.97 that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters 00:04:48.17\00:04:51.69 of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: 00:04:51.79\00:04:54.00 But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, 00:04:54.20\00:04:57.13 and take a wife unto my son Isaac. " 00:04:57.23\00:04:59.17 And the servant said unto him, 00:04:59.37\00:05:01.22 "Peradventure the women will not be willing to follow me 00:05:01.42\00:05:03.71 unto this land: must I needs bring thy son again unto 00:05:03.81\00:05:07.04 the land from whence thou camest? " 00:05:07.14\00:05:08.75 And Abraham said unto him, "Beware thou that thou bring not 00:05:08.95\00:05:13.60 my son thither again. The Lord God of heaven, 00:05:13.70\00:05:16.83 which took me from my father's house, and from the land 00:05:16.93\00:05:19.34 of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, 00:05:19.44\00:05:22.99 saying, 'Unto thy seed will I give this land; ' 00:05:23.09\00:05:25.77 He shall send His angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife 00:05:25.97\00:05:29.78 unto my son from thence. 00:05:29.88\00:05:31.88 And if the women will not be willing to follow thee, 00:05:32.08\00:05:34.47 then thou shalt be clear from this my oath: 00:05:34.68\00:05:37.22 only bring not my son thither again. " And it came to pass, 00:06:48.31\00:06:51.54 before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, 00:06:51.74\00:06:56.94 who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, 00:06:57.14\00:07:01.37 Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder. 00:07:01.57\00:07:05.54 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, 00:07:05.74\00:07:09.60 neither had any man known her; 00:07:09.80\00:07:11.87 and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, 00:07:12.07\00:07:14.85 and came up. And the servant ran to meet her, and said, 00:07:15.05\00:07:19.16 "Let me, I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher. " 00:07:19.36\00:07:22.84 And she said, "Drink, my lord: " 00:07:23.05\00:07:25.98 and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, 00:07:26.18\00:07:30.14 and gave him drink. And when she had done giving him drink, 00:07:30.24\00:07:33.45 she said, "I will draw water for thy camels also, 00:07:33.55\00:07:36.13 until they have done drinking. " 00:07:36.23\00:07:37.73 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the through, 00:07:37.93\00:07:41.54 and ran again unto the well to draw water, 00:07:41.74\00:07:44.00 and drew for all his camels. 00:07:44.03\00:07:47.32 And the man wondering at her held his peace, 00:07:47.52\00:07:51.72 to wit whether the Lord had made his journey prosperous or not. 00:07:51.92\00:07:55.44 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, 00:07:55.64\00:07:59.16 that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, 00:07:59.36\00:08:02.78 and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; 00:08:02.98\00:08:07.42 And said, "Whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: 00:08:07.62\00:08:11.79 is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in? " 00:08:11.99\00:08:15.68 And she said unto him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel 00:08:15.88\00:08:19.38 the son of Milcah, which she bare unto Nahor. " 00:08:19.58\00:08:22.47 She said moreover unto him, "We have both straw and 00:08:22.67\00:08:27.24 provender enough, and room to lodge in. " 00:08:27.34\00:08:29.59 And the man bowed down his head, and worshiped the Lord. 00:08:29.79\00:08:32.90 And he said, "Blessed be the Lord God of my master Abraham, 00:08:33.10\00:08:36.58 who hath not left destitute my master of His mercy 00:08:36.79\00:08:40.42 and His truth: I being in the way, the Lord led me to the 00:08:40.52\00:08:44.81 house of my master's brethren. " 00:08:44.91\00:08:47.16 And the damsel ran, and told them of her mother's house 00:08:47.36\00:08:50.18 these things. And Rebekah had a brother, 00:08:50.28\00:08:52.32 and his name was Laban: and Laban ran out unto the man, 00:08:52.52\00:08:56.29 unto the well. And it came to pass, when he saw the earring 00:08:56.49\00:09:00.20 and the bracelets upon his sister's hands, 00:09:00.30\00:09:02.41 and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, saying, 00:09:02.62\00:09:05.80 "Thus spake the man unto me; " 00:09:06.00\00:09:07.75 that he came unto the man; and, behold, he stood by the camels 00:09:07.85\00:09:11.11 at the well. And he said, "Come in, thou blessed of the 00:09:11.21\00:09:14.54 Lord: wherefore standest thou without? 00:09:14.64\00:09:17.64 for I have prepared the house, and room for the camels. " 00:09:17.84\00:09:21.31 And the man came into the house: and he ungirded his camels, 00:09:21.52\00:09:25.55 and gave straw and provender for the camels, 00:09:25.75\00:09:28.51 and water to wash his feet, 00:09:28.61\00:09:30.83 and the men's feet that were with him. 00:09:30.93\00:09:33.00 And there was set meat before him to eat: but he said, 00:09:33.20\00:09:36.00 "I will not eat, until I have told mine errand. " 00:09:36.10\00:09:38.24 And he said, "Speak on. " 00:09:38.44\00:09:40.61 And he said, "I am Abraham's servant. And the Lord hath 00:09:40.81\00:09:44.44 blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: 00:09:44.54\00:09:47.13 and He hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, 00:09:47.23\00:09:50.25 and menservants, and maid- servants, and camels, and asses. 00:09:50.35\00:09:53.24 And Sarah my master's wife bare a son to my master 00:09:53.44\00:09:57.29 when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath. 00:09:57.39\00:10:01.75 And my master made me swear, saying, Thou shalt not take 00:10:01.95\00:10:05.10 a wife to my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, 00:10:05.20\00:10:07.67 in whose land I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my father's house, 00:10:07.77\00:10:11.56 and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son. " 00:10:11.76\00:10:14.98 And I said unto my master, 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.58 "Peradventure the woman will not follow me. " 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.04 And he said unto me, "The Lord, before whom I walk, 00:10:20.24\00:10:24.54 will send His angel with thee, and prosper thy way; 00:10:24.74\00:10:29.01 and thou shalt take a wife for my son of my kindred, 00:10:29.21\00:10:32.28 and of my father's house: Then shalt thou be clear 00:10:32.48\00:10:36.08 from this my oath, when thou comest to my kindred; 00:10:36.18\00:10:38.43 and if they give not thee one, 00:10:38.63\00:10:40.61 thou shalt be clear from my oath. " 00:10:40.71\00:10:42.30 And I came this day unto the well, and said, 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.90 "O Lord God of my master Abraham, if now Thou do prosper 00:10:45.00\00:10:48.92 my way which I go: Behold, I stand by the well 00:10:49.02\00:10:52.37 of water; and it shall come to pass, 00:10:52.47\00:10:54.87 that when the virgin cometh forth to draw water, 00:10:54.97\00:10:57.27 and I say to her, 'Give me, I pray thee, a little water 00:10:57.37\00:11:00.14 of thy pitcher to drink; ' And she say to me, 00:11:00.24\00:11:02.80 'Both drink thou, and I will also draw for thy camels; ' 00:11:03.00\00:11:05.95 let the same be the woman whom the Lord hath appointed 00:11:06.15\00:11:09.57 out for my master's son. " 00:11:09.60\00:11:11.74 And before I had done speaking in mine heart, behold, 00:11:12.04\00:11:17.99 Rebekah came forth with her pitcher on her shoulder; 00:11:18.09\00:11:20.72 and she went down unto the well, and drew water: 00:11:20.83\00:11:23.52 and I said unto her, 'Let me drink, I pray thee. ' 00:11:23.72\00:11:26.29 And she made haste, and let down her pitcher from her shoulder, 00:11:26.49\00:11:29.20 and said, 'Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also: ' 00:11:29.30\00:11:32.23 so I drank; and she made the camels drink also. 00:11:32.43\00:11:35.21 And I asked her, and said, 'Whose daughter art thou? ' 00:11:35.41\00:11:38.01 And she said, 'The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, 00:11:38.21\00:11:42.55 whom Milcah bare unto him: ' and I put the earring upon her 00:11:42.75\00:11:45.39 face, and the bracelets upon her hands. 00:11:45.49\00:11:47.45 And I bowed down my head, and worshiped the Lord, 00:11:47.65\00:11:50.20 and blessed the Lord God of my master Abraham, 00:11:50.40\00:11:53.09 which hath led me in the right way to take my master's 00:11:53.29\00:11:56.78 brother's daughter unto his son. 00:11:56.88\00:11:59.18 And now if ye will deal kindly and truly with my master, 00:11:59.38\00:12:03.88 tell me: and if not, tell me; 00:12:04.08\00:12:06.75 that I may turn to the right hand, or to the left. " 00:12:06.95\00:12:09.71 Then Laban and Bethuel answered and said, 00:12:09.91\00:12:13.14 "The thing proceedeth from the Lord: we cannot speak unto thee 00:12:13.24\00:12:16.56 bad or good. Behold, Rebekah is before thee, 00:12:16.66\00:12:19.96 take her, and go, and let her be thy master's son's wife, 00:12:20.16\00:12:24.36 as the Lord hath spoken. " 00:12:24.56\00:12:26.23 And it came to pass, that, when Abraham's servant heard 00:12:26.43\00:12:29.42 their words, he worshiped the Lord, 00:12:29.52\00:12:31.81 bowing himself to the earth. 00:12:32.02\00:12:33.72 And the servant brought forth jewels of silver, 00:12:33.92\00:12:36.68 and jewels of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah: 00:12:36.78\00:12:40.57 he gave also to her brother and to her mother precious things. 00:12:40.77\00:12:44.44 And they did eat and drink, he and the men that were 00:12:44.64\00:12:47.84 with him, and tarried all night; and they rose up in the morning, 00:12:47.94\00:12:51.38 and he said, "Send me away unto my master. " 00:12:51.58\00:12:53.71 And her brother and her mother said, "Let the damsel abide 00:12:53.91\00:12:57.25 with us a few days, at the least ten; 00:12:57.35\00:13:00.03 after that she shall go. " 00:13:00.23\00:13:01.85 And he said unto them, "Hinder me not, 00:13:02.05\00:13:05.58 seeing the Lord hath prospered my way; 00:13:05.78\00:13:08.29 send me away that I may go to my master. " 00:13:08.49\00:13:11.80 And they said, "We will call the damsel, and inquire 00:13:12.01\00:13:14.79 at her mouth. " And they called Rebekah, 00:13:14.89\00:13:17.31 and said unto her, "Wilt thou go with this man? " 00:13:17.41\00:13:19.85 And she said, "I will go. " 00:13:20.05\00:13:22.65 And they sent away Rebekah their sister, and her nurse, 00:13:22.85\00:13:26.33 and Abraham's servant, and his men. 00:13:26.53\00:13:28.54 And they blessed Rebekah, and said unto her, 00:13:28.74\00:13:31.20 "Thou art our sister, be thou the mother of thousands 00:13:31.40\00:13:35.83 of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of those 00:13:35.93\00:13:39.56 which hate them. " And Rebekah arose, 00:13:39.66\00:13:42.36 and her damsels, and they rode upon the camels, 00:13:42.56\00:13:45.13 and followed the man: and the servant took Rebekah, 00:13:45.34\00:13:48.22 and went his way. 00:13:48.32\00:13:50.33 And Isaac came from the way 00:13:50.53\00:13:52.16 of the well Lahairoi; for he 00:13:52.26\00:13:54.13 dwelt in the south country. 00:13:54.23\00:13:55.75 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide: 00:13:55.95\00:13:59.66 and he lifted up his eyes, and saw, 00:13:59.86\00:14:01.87 and behold, the camels were coming. 00:14:02.07\00:14:04.29 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, 00:14:04.49\00:14:06.94 and when she saw Isaac, she lighted off the camel. 00:14:06.97\00:14:10.76 For she had said unto the servant, "What man is this 00:14:10.96\00:14:13.86 that walketh in the field to meet us? " 00:14:13.96\00:14:15.41 And the servant had said, "It is my master: " 00:14:15.51\00:14:17.53 therefore she took a veil, and covered herself. 00:14:17.73\00:14:21.18 And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done. 00:14:21.38\00:14:24.81 And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, 00:14:25.01\00:14:28.17 and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; 00:14:28.37\00:14:31.01 and he loved her; 00:14:31.21\00:14:32.48 and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. 00:14:32.68\00:14:35.50
