Hello, and welcome back to His Words Are Life. 00:00:16.90\00:00:19.24 I'm Kelly Mowrer, and today we're going to be reading the 00:00:19.27\00:00:22.11 beautiful chapter in Hebrews about faith. 00:00:22.14\00:00:24.84 About the men and women of faith who've gone before us, 00:00:24.87\00:00:28.15 and left for us inspiration and encouragement, and example of 00:00:28.18\00:00:32.08 how we can serve God and be pleasing to Him. 00:00:32.11\00:00:35.30 But before we read, let's pray together. 00:00:35.33\00:00:37.87 Dear Jesus, thank You so much that You have promised to be 00:00:37.90\00:00:42.85 both the author and the finisher of our faith. 00:00:42.88\00:00:45.81 We know that without faith it's not going to be possible to be 00:00:45.84\00:00:49.36 pleasing to You, and that is what we long most to be. 00:00:49.39\00:00:52.58 You've told us that faith will come by hearing, and hearing 00:00:52.61\00:00:56.43 will come through Your word. 00:00:56.46\00:00:57.97 And so now we come to Your word and ask You to take Your 00:00:58.00\00:01:02.87 thoughts to us and plant them deep in our hearts so they will 00:01:02.90\00:01:06.88 bear fruit pleasing to Your sight. 00:01:06.91\00:01:08.98 May You be honored and glorified by the lives that we 00:01:09.01\00:01:12.88 lead for You. 00:01:12.91\00:01:14.05 Thank You so much for loving us. 00:01:14.08\00:01:15.72 We love You, too. 00:01:15.75\00:01:17.13 Amen. 00:01:17.16\00:01:18.93 Again, we're reading in Hebrews, chapter 11. 00:01:18.97\00:01:21.58 When we last left off we had just read the opening where it 00:01:21.61\00:01:26.07 says faith is the substance of things not seen, 00:01:26.10\00:01:28.83 and the evidence of things hoped for. 00:01:28.86\00:01:30.99 And now we'll begin in verse 4, and this is the 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.82 King James Version. 00:01:33.85\00:01:34.87 By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than 00:01:34.90\00:01:41.74 Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, 00:01:41.77\00:01:45.83 God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead 00:01:45.86\00:01:51.70 yet speaketh. 00:01:51.73\00:01:53.12 By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; 00:01:53.15\00:01:57.87 and was not found, because God had translated him: 00:01:57.90\00:02:01.71 for before his translation he had this testimony, 00:02:01.74\00:02:05.65 that he pleased God. 00:02:05.68\00:02:07.75 But without faith it is impossible to please him: 00:02:07.78\00:02:11.41 for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, 00:02:11.44\00:02:15.68 and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. 00:02:15.71\00:02:20.39 By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, 00:02:20.42\00:02:26.73 moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; 00:02:26.76\00:02:32.00 by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the 00:02:32.03\00:02:36.51 righteousness which is by faith. 00:02:36.54\00:02:39.09 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place 00:02:39.12\00:02:44.47 which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; 00:02:44.50\00:02:48.22 and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 00:02:48.25\00:02:52.05 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange 00:02:52.08\00:02:56.48 country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, 00:02:56.51\00:03:00.38 the heirs with him of the same promise: for he looked for a 00:03:00.41\00:03:05.40 city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. 00:03:05.43\00:03:09.47 Through faith also Sarah herself received strength to conceive 00:03:09.50\00:03:15.14 seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, 00:03:15.17\00:03:19.32 because she judged him faithful who had promised. 00:03:19.35\00:03:23.48 Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, 00:03:23.51\00:03:28.09 so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, 00:03:28.12\00:03:31.75 and as the sand which is by the seashore innumerable. 00:03:31.78\00:03:35.16 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, 00:03:35.19\00:03:40.12 but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, 00:03:40.15\00:03:45.25 and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and 00:03:45.28\00:03:49.76 pilgrims on the earth. 00:03:49.79\00:03:50.91 For they that say such things declare plainly that they 00:03:50.94\00:03:55.09 seek a country. 00:03:55.12\00:03:56.21 And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from 00:03:56.24\00:03:59.48 whence they came out, they might have had opportunity 00:03:59.51\00:04:02.03 to have returned. 00:04:02.06\00:04:03.13 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: 00:04:03.16\00:04:08.85 wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: 00:04:08.88\00:04:13.65 for he hath prepared for them a city. 00:04:13.68\00:04:16.37 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: 00:04:16.40\00:04:22.27 and he that had received the promises offered up his only 00:04:22.30\00:04:26.96 begotten son, of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy 00:04:26.99\00:04:31.16 seed be called: accounting that God was able to raise him up, 00:04:31.19\00:04:36.89 even from the dead; from whence also he received him 00:04:36.92\00:04:41.28 in a figure. 00:04:41.31\00:04:42.28 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. 00:04:42.29\00:04:48.50 By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of 00:04:48.53\00:04:53.77 Joseph; and worshiped, leaning upon the top of his staff. 00:04:53.80\00:04:58.41 By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing 00:04:58.44\00:05:04.27 of the children of Israel; and gave commandment 00:05:04.30\00:05:06.56 concerning his bones. 00:05:06.59\00:05:08.10 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months 00:05:08.13\00:05:13.29 of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; 00:05:13.32\00:05:16.89 and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. 00:05:16.92\00:05:19.41 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be 00:05:19.44\00:05:24.56 called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; choosing rather to 00:05:24.59\00:05:28.37 suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the 00:05:28.40\00:05:31.95 pleasures of sin for a season; esteeming the reproach of Christ 00:05:31.98\00:05:37.13 greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had 00:05:37.16\00:05:41.67 respect unto the recompense of the reward. 00:05:41.70\00:05:44.60 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: 00:05:44.63\00:05:49.96 for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. 00:05:49.99\00:05:54.51 Through faith he kept the Passover, and the sprinkling of 00:05:54.54\00:05:58.94 blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. 00:05:58.97\00:06:03.38 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: 00:06:03.41\00:06:09.02 which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. 00:06:09.05\00:06:13.06 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were 00:06:13.09\00:06:17.06 compassed about seven days. 00:06:17.09\00:06:18.91 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them 00:06:18.94\00:06:23.02 that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. 00:06:23.05\00:06:27.20 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell 00:06:27.23\00:06:32.12 of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah; 00:06:32.15\00:06:35.79 of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: who through 00:06:35.82\00:06:40.52 faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, 00:06:40.55\00:06:43.33 obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, 00:06:43.36\00:06:47.24 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, 00:06:47.27\00:06:51.18 out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, 00:06:51.21\00:06:56.88 turned to flight the armies of the aliens. 00:06:56.91\00:07:00.87 Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were 00:07:00.90\00:07:05.78 tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might 00:07:05.81\00:07:09.31 obtain a better resurrection: and others had trial of cruel 00:07:09.34\00:07:14.50 mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds 00:07:14.53\00:07:17.83 and imprisonment: they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, 00:07:17.86\00:07:23.07 were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about 00:07:23.10\00:07:27.59 in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, 00:07:27.62\00:07:32.33 tormented; of whom the world was not worthy, they wandered 00:07:32.36\00:07:37.67 in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves 00:07:37.70\00:07:41.58 of the earth. 00:07:41.61\00:07:42.58 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, 00:07:42.59\00:07:47.69 received not the promise: God having provided some better 00:07:47.72\00:07:53.44 thing for us, that they without us should not be made perfect. 00:07:53.47\00:07:58.62 Continuing to read in Hebrews, chapter 12. 00:07:58.65\00:08:02.50 Wherefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a 00:08:02.53\00:08:07.81 cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin 00:08:07.84\00:08:12.48 which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience 00:08:12.51\00:08:17.11 the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author 00:08:17.14\00:08:22.05 and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set 00:08:22.08\00:08:26.40 before him endured the cross, despising the shame, 00:08:26.43\00:08:30.46 and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. 00:08:30.49\00:08:33.98 For consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners 00:08:34.01\00:08:38.87 against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds. 00:08:38.90\00:08:44.07 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. 00:08:44.10\00:08:48.77 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh 00:08:48.80\00:08:53.12 unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the 00:08:53.15\00:08:58.39 chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked 00:08:58.42\00:09:01.86 of him: for whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, 00:09:01.89\00:09:05.74 and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. 00:09:05.77\00:09:08.58 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; 00:09:08.61\00:09:14.99 for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not? 00:09:15.02\00:09:18.85 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are 00:09:18.88\00:09:23.22 partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. 00:09:23.25\00:09:27.15 Furthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, 00:09:27.18\00:09:31.80 and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in 00:09:31.83\00:09:36.58 subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? 00:09:36.61\00:09:40.56 For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own 00:09:40.59\00:09:44.63 pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers 00:09:44.66\00:09:49.39 of his holiness. 00:09:49.42\00:09:50.91 Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, 00:09:50.94\00:09:55.58 but grievous: nevertheless, afterward it yieldeth 00:09:55.61\00:10:00.41 the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them 00:10:00.44\00:10:03.63 which are exercised thereby. 00:10:03.66\00:10:05.95 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble 00:10:05.98\00:10:11.32 knees; and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which 00:10:11.35\00:10:15.56 is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather 00:10:15.59\00:10:19.22 be healed. 00:10:19.25\00:10:20.22 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man 00:10:20.23\00:10:24.73 shall see the Lord: looking diligently lest any man fail of 00:10:24.76\00:10:29.34 the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up 00:10:29.37\00:10:33.36 trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; lest there be any 00:10:33.39\00:10:39.09 fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of 00:10:39.12\00:10:43.60 meat sold his birthright. 00:10:43.63\00:10:45.01 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the 00:10:45.04\00:10:49.08 blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of 00:10:49.11\00:10:52.35 repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears. 00:10:52.38\00:10:55.28 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, 00:10:55.31\00:10:58.80 and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, 00:10:58.83\00:11:01.51 and darkness, and tempest, and the sound of a trumpet, 00:11:01.54\00:11:04.34 and the voice of words; which voice they that heard entreated 00:11:04.37\00:11:07.89 that the word should not be spoken to them any more: 00:11:07.92\00:11:10.36 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, 00:11:10.39\00:11:13.36 And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, 00:11:13.39\00:11:16.37 it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart: 00:11:16.40\00:11:18.93 and so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly 00:11:18.96\00:11:23.69 fear and quake:) but ye are come unto mount Zion, 00:11:23.72\00:11:28.47 and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, 00:11:28.50\00:11:31.92 and to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly 00:11:31.95\00:11:36.47 and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, 00:11:36.50\00:11:39.42 and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men 00:11:39.45\00:11:44.72 made perfect, and to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, 00:11:44.75\00:11:49.45 and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things 00:11:49.48\00:11:53.03 than that of Abel. 00:11:53.06\00:11:54.54 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. 00:11:54.57\00:11:58.62 For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, 00:11:58.65\00:12:03.12 much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that 00:12:03.15\00:12:07.26 speaketh from heaven: (whose voice then shook the earth: 00:12:07.29\00:12:11.17 but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake 00:12:11.20\00:12:15.00 not the earth only, but also heaven. 00:12:15.03\00:12:17.78 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those 00:12:17.81\00:12:21.63 things that are shaken, as of things that are made, 00:12:21.66\00:12:24.29 that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. 00:12:24.32\00:12:28.34 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, 00:12:28.37\00:12:33.43 let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably 00:12:33.46\00:12:38.52 with reverence and godly fear: for our God is a consuming fire. 00:12:38.55\00:12:44.13 We're continuing to read in Hebrews, chapter 13, 00:12:44.16\00:12:47.73 and this is the King James Version. 00:12:47.76\00:12:49.37 Let brotherly love continue. 00:12:49.40\00:12:52.63 Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some 00:12:52.66\00:12:57.12 have entertained angels unawares. 00:12:57.15\00:12:59.16 Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; 00:12:59.19\00:13:03.44 and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also 00:13:03.47\00:13:07.79 in the body. 00:13:07.82\00:13:08.79 Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: 00:13:08.80\00:13:13.42 but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge. 00:13:13.45\00:13:17.08 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content 00:13:17.11\00:13:21.52 with such things as ye have: for he hath said, 00:13:21.55\00:13:24.76 I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. 00:13:24.79\00:13:27.85 So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, 00:13:27.88\00:13:31.68 and I will not fear what man shall do unto me. 00:13:31.71\00:13:35.05 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken 00:13:35.08\00:13:39.58 unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, 00:13:39.61\00:13:42.88 considering the end of their conversation. 00:13:42.91\00:13:45.80 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, 00:13:45.83\00:13:50.47 and for ever. 00:13:50.50\00:13:52.06 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. 00:13:52.09\00:13:56.60 For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; 00:13:56.63\00:14:00.44 not with meats, which have not profited them that have been 00:14:00.47\00:14:04.08 occupied therein. 00:14:04.11\00:14:05.37 We have an alter, whereof they have no right to eat which serve 00:14:05.40\00:14:09.46 the tabernacle. 00:14:09.49\00:14:10.46 For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the 00:14:10.47\00:14:14.19 sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned 00:14:14.22\00:14:17.65 without the camp. 00:14:17.69\00:14:18.82 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with 00:14:18.85\00:14:23.22 his own blood, suffered without the gate. 00:14:23.25\00:14:26.85 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, 00:14:26.88\00:14:30.93 bearing his reproach. 00:14:30.96\00:14:32.78 For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. 00:14:32.81\00:14:37.27
