Hi and welcome to His Words Are Life. 00:00:15.61\00:00:18.25 I'm Kelly Mowrer. When we were together last we were reading 00:00:18.28\00:00:21.65 Paul's second letter to the church at Corinth and 00:00:21.68\00:00:24.24 he was thanking the church for their generosity, for their zeal 00:00:24.28\00:00:28.96 in collecting and giving and how that had encouraged Titus and 00:00:29.00\00:00:33.57 brought joy to Titus and through Titus to Paul. As we pray now 00:00:33.61\00:00:37.79 and as we begin to read this, let's look to our brothers and 00:00:37.83\00:00:42.27 sisters in that long ago church as an example of how we can 00:00:42.30\00:00:46.71 ask God's blessings on our life, not that we may hoard 00:00:46.75\00:00:50.16 them to ourselves, but that we may with great generosity 00:00:50.19\00:00:53.56 share what we receive. Let's pray together. 00:00:53.60\00:00:55.67 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for these words that come to us 00:00:55.71\00:01:00.56 to encourage us, but to set forth also an example of what 00:01:00.60\00:01:05.39 is pleasing to You. And You told us it is more blessed to give 00:01:05.42\00:01:09.59 than to receive. As we read about the huge generosity 00:01:09.63\00:01:14.28 of Corinth, please open our hearts to how we can be 00:01:14.32\00:01:18.90 more generous to those around us not just with finances, 00:01:18.94\00:01:23.02 but generous with ourselves. We received everything from You 00:01:23.06\00:01:27.11 You gave everything to us. You held back nothing. You gave us 00:01:27.17\00:01:31.17 Your own Son. Help us now to hold back nothing that we are 00:01:31.21\00:01:35.50 able to give to serve others for You. We love You, Amen. 00:01:35.53\00:01:39.83 I am reading from II Corinthians in the King James Version 00:01:39.87\00:01:44.14 We left off at chapter 9 and we'll now beginning reading with 00:01:44.18\00:01:47.77 verse twelve. For the administration of this service, 00:01:47.81\00:01:52.37 not only supplies the want of the saints, but is abundant also 00:01:52.41\00:01:57.05 by many thanksgivings unto God. Whiles by the experiment of this 00:01:57.09\00:02:02.09 ministration may glorify God for your professed subjection 00:02:02.12\00:02:06.16 unto the gospel of Christ, and for your liberal distribution 00:02:06.19\00:02:10.51 unto them and unto all men; And by their prayer for you 00:02:10.54\00:02:14.40 which long after you for the exceeding grace of God in you. 00:02:14.44\00:02:18.31 Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift. 00:02:18.34\00:02:22.40 Continuing in chapter ten. Now I, Paul, myself, beseech you 00:02:22.43\00:02:28.40 by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence 00:02:28.44\00:02:32.55 am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: 00:02:32.58\00:02:36.88 but I beseech you that I may not not be bold when I am present 00:02:36.92\00:02:40.25 with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, 00:02:40.28\00:02:43.90 which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. 00:02:43.93\00:02:47.64 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. 00:02:47.68\00:02:52.19 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty 00:02:52.23\00:02:56.68 through God to the pulling down of strong holds; 00:02:56.71\00:03:00.06 Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth 00:03:00.10\00:03:03.97 itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity 00:03:04.00\00:03:08.31 every thought to the obedience of Christ; 00:03:08.35\00:03:11.03 and having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, 00:03:11.07\00:03:15.57 when your obedience is fulfilled. Do ye look on things 00:03:15.61\00:03:20.02 after the outward appearance? If any man trust to himself 00:03:20.06\00:03:23.80 that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, 00:03:23.83\00:03:28.48 that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's. 00:03:28.51\00:03:34.34 For though I should boast somewhat more of our authority, 00:03:34.38\00:03:38.05 which the Lord has given us for edification, 00:03:38.09\00:03:40.18 and not for your destruction, I should not be ashamed: 00:03:40.22\00:03:43.82 that I may not seem as if I would terrify you by letters. 00:03:43.86\00:03:47.35 For his letters, say they, are weighty and powerful; 00:03:47.39\00:03:51.04 but his bodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible. 00:03:51.07\00:03:54.74 Let such an one think this, that, such as we are in word by 00:03:54.77\00:04:00.41 letters when we are absent, such will we be also in deed 00:04:00.45\00:04:03.91 when we are present. For we dare not make ourselves of the number 00:04:03.95\00:04:08.21 or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: 00:04:08.25\00:04:11.20 but they measuring themselves by themselves, 00:04:11.23\00:04:14.52 and comparing themselves among themselves are not wise. 00:04:14.55\00:04:17.76 But we will not boast of things without our measure, 00:04:17.80\00:04:21.90 but according to the measure of the rule which God hath 00:04:21.93\00:04:25.46 distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. 00:04:25.49\00:04:29.58 For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though 00:04:29.62\00:04:33.83 we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also 00:04:33.87\00:04:38.89 in preaching the gospel of Christ: Not boasting of things 00:04:38.93\00:04:42.51 without our measure, that is of other men's labours; 00:04:42.55\00:04:45.62 but having hope when your faith is increased, that we shall be 00:04:45.66\00:04:50.44 enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, 00:04:50.48\00:04:54.77 to preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to 00:04:54.81\00:04:58.14 boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand. 00:04:58.18\00:05:01.58 But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 00:05:01.61\00:05:05.82 For not he that commendeth himself is approved, 00:05:05.85\00:05:09.22 but whom the Lord commendeth. 00:05:09.25\00:05:11.71 Continuing to read in II Corinthians, 00:05:11.74\00:05:14.63 This is the King James Version. 00:05:14.66\00:05:16.16 beginning chapter eleven. 00:05:16.19\00:05:17.37 Would to God ye could bear with me a little in my folly: 00:05:17.40\00:05:21.31 and indeed bear with me, for I am jealous over you 00:05:21.35\00:05:24.57 with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, 00:05:24.60\00:05:28.28 that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. 00:05:28.31\00:05:31.51 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve 00:05:31.54\00:05:37.20 through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted 00:05:37.23\00:05:40.85 from the simplicity that is in Christ. 00:05:40.88\00:05:44.02 For if he that cometh preached another Jesus, whom we have not 00:05:44.05\00:05:48.04 preached, or if ye receive another spirit, 00:05:48.07\00:05:50.71 which ye have not received, or another gospel, 00:05:50.74\00:05:53.25 which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him. 00:05:53.28\00:05:55.97 For I suppose I was not a whit behind the very chiefest 00:05:56.00\00:05:59.75 apostles, but though I be rude in speech, 00:05:59.78\00:06:02.31 yet not in knowledge; but we have been throughly made 00:06:02.34\00:06:06.23 manifest among you in all things Have I committed an offence 00:06:06.92\00:06:10.27 in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, 00:06:11.03\00:06:13.03 because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely? 00:06:14.13\00:06:16.98 I robbed other churches, taking wages of them to do you service. 00:06:17.01\00:06:20.83 And when I was present with you and wanted, I was chargeable 00:06:20.86\00:06:25.75 to no man: for that which was lacking to me the brethren 00:06:25.78\00:06:29.59 which came from Macedonia supplied. 00:06:29.62\00:06:31.76 and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome 00:06:31.79\00:06:35.37 unto you, and so will I keep myself. 00:06:35.40\00:06:37.56 As the truth of Christ is in me, no man shall stop me 00:06:37.60\00:06:41.98 of this boasting in the regions of Achaia. Wherefore? 00:06:42.01\00:06:45.96 because I love you not? God knoweth. 00:06:45.99\00:06:48.95 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion 00:06:48.98\00:06:53.50 from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, 00:06:53.53\00:06:57.66 they may be found even as we. For such are false apostles, 00:06:57.69\00:07:02.21 deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles 00:07:02.24\00:07:06.29 of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed 00:07:06.32\00:07:10.11 into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing 00:07:10.14\00:07:14.56 if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of 00:07:14.59\00:07:17.58 righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works. 00:07:17.61\00:07:21.11 I say again, let mo man think me a fool; if otherwise, 00:07:21.14\00:07:26.18 yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little. 00:07:26.21\00:07:29.73 That which I speak, I speak it not after the Lord, 00:07:29.76\00:07:33.38 but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. 00:07:33.41\00:07:36.66 seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also. 00:07:36.69\00:07:41.28 For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise. 00:07:41.31\00:07:45.11 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man 00:07:45.14\00:07:49.09 devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, 00:07:49.12\00:07:52.59 if a man smite you on the face. I speak as concerning reproach, 00:07:52.62\00:07:57.85 as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any 00:07:57.88\00:08:02.30 is bold - I speak foolishly - I am bold also. 00:08:02.33\00:08:05.99 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. 00:08:06.02\00:08:11.74 Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I. 00:08:11.77\00:08:15.01 Are they ministers of Christ? - I speak as a fool - I am more; 00:08:15.04\00:08:19.82 in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, 00:08:19.85\00:08:24.06 in prison more frequent, in deaths oft. 00:08:24.09\00:08:27.96 Of the Jews, five times received I 40 stripes save one. 00:08:27.99\00:08:33.16 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once I was stoned, 00:08:33.19\00:08:36.84 thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day have I been in 00:08:36.87\00:08:40.69 the deep; in journeyings often, in perils of waters, 00:08:40.72\00:08:44.54 in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, 00:08:44.58\00:08:48.56 in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, 00:08:48.59\00:08:51.97 in perils of the wilderness, in perils in the sea, 00:08:52.00\00:08:54.31 in perils among false brethren, in weariness and painfulness, 00:08:54.34\00:08:59.45 in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, 00:08:59.48\00:09:05.57 in cold and nakedness, beside those things that are without, 00:09:05.60\00:09:10.67 that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. 00:09:10.70\00:09:13.99 Who is weak and I am not weak? Who is offended and I burn not? 00:09:14.02\00:09:19.03 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things 00:09:19.06\00:09:22.77 which concern mine infirmities. The God and Father of our Lord 00:09:22.80\00:09:27.20 Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth 00:09:27.23\00:09:30.49 that I lie not. In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king 00:09:30.52\00:09:36.07 kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous 00:09:36.10\00:09:39.85 to apprehend me: And through a window in a basket 00:09:39.88\00:09:42.49 was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands. 00:09:42.52\00:09:45.54 Continuing in II Corinthians, chapter twelve. 00:09:45.57\00:09:49.58 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. 00:09:49.61\00:09:53.54 I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 00:09:53.57\00:09:56.88 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, 00:09:56.91\00:09:59.99 whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body 00:10:00.02\00:10:02.99 I cannot tell: God knoweth; such an one caught up 00:10:03.02\00:10:06.87 to the third heaven. And I knew such a man, whether in the body 00:10:06.90\00:10:11.03 or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth 00:10:11.06\00:10:13.87 how that he was caught up into paradise and heard unspeakable 00:10:13.90\00:10:18.41 words which it is not lawful for any man to utter. 00:10:18.44\00:10:21.07 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, 00:10:21.10\00:10:26.09 but in mine infirmities, for though I would desire to glory 00:10:26.12\00:10:30.20 I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth; 00:10:30.23\00:10:33.49 but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above 00:10:33.52\00:10:38.66 that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me. 00:10:38.69\00:10:41.94 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the 00:10:41.97\00:10:45.72 abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn 00:10:45.75\00:10:48.80 in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, 00:10:48.83\00:10:52.26 lest I should be exalted above measure, 00:10:52.29\00:10:55.21 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might 00:10:55.24\00:10:59.29 depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient 00:10:59.32\00:11:04.68 for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. 00:11:04.71\00:11:08.64 Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, 00:11:08.67\00:11:13.62 that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 00:11:13.65\00:11:16.91 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, 00:11:16.94\00:11:20.74 in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: 00:11:20.77\00:11:24.94 for when I am weak, then am I strong. 00:11:24.97\00:11:29.07 I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: 00:11:29.10\00:11:32.87 for I ought to have been commended of you: 00:11:32.90\00:11:34.88 for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, 00:11:34.91\00:11:38.12 though I be nothing. Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought 00:11:38.15\00:11:42.37 among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, 00:11:42.40\00:11:45.48 and mighty deeds. For what is it wherein ye were inferior to 00:11:45.51\00:11:49.76 other churches, except it be that I, myself, was not 00:11:49.79\00:11:52.36 burdensome to you? forgive me this wrong. 00:11:52.39\00:11:55.30 Behold the third time I am ready to come to you; and I will not 00:11:55.33\00:11:58.81 be burdensome to you: for I seek not yours, but you: 00:11:58.84\00:12:03.21 for the children ought not to lay up for the parents, 00:12:03.24\00:12:06.49 but the parents for the children and I will very gladly spend 00:12:06.52\00:12:11.41 and be spent for you; though the more abundantly I love you, 00:12:11.44\00:12:15.42 the less I be loved. But be it so, I did not burden you: 00:12:15.45\00:12:19.76 nevertheless, being crafty, I caught you with guile. 00:12:19.79\00:12:22.91 Did I make a gain of you by any of them whom I sent unto you? 00:12:22.94\00:12:27.78 I desired Titus, and with him I sent a brother. 00:12:27.81\00:12:30.90 Did Titus make a gain of you? Walked we not in the 00:12:30.93\00:12:34.54 same spirit? walked we not in the same steps? 00:12:34.57\00:12:36.98 Again, think ye that we excuse ourselves unto you? 00:12:37.01\00:12:41.11 we speak before God in Christ: but we do all things, 00:12:41.14\00:12:44.71 dearly beloved, for your edifying, for I fear, lest, 00:12:44.74\00:12:48.75 when I come, I shall not find you such as I would, 00:12:48.78\00:12:51.54 and that I shall be found unto you such as ye would not: 00:12:51.57\00:12:54.70 lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, 00:12:54.73\00:12:59.07 and whisperings, swellings, tumults: And lest, when I come 00:12:59.10\00:13:03.94 again my God will humble me among you, and that I shall 00:13:03.97\00:13:07.36 bewail many which have sinned already, and have not repented 00:13:07.39\00:13:10.67 of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness 00:13:10.70\00:13:13.54 which they have committed. 00:13:13.57\00:13:14.74 We are reading II Corinthians, chapter 13. 00:13:14.77\00:13:18.05 This is the third time I am coming to you. 00:13:18.08\00:13:21.42 In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word 00:13:21.45\00:13:24.33 be established. I told you before, and foretell you 00:13:24.36\00:13:28.04 as if I were present, the 2nd time; and being absent now I 00:13:28.07\00:13:32.03 write to them which heretofore have sinned, and to all other, 00:13:32.06\00:13:35.77 that if I come again, I will not spare: 00:13:35.80\00:13:39.35 Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, 00:13:39.38\00:13:43.42 which to youward is not weak, but is mighty in you. 00:13:43.45\00:13:46.98 For though he was crucified through weakness, 00:13:47.01\00:13:50.04 yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him 00:13:50.07\00:13:54.64 but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you. 00:13:54.67\00:13:59.28 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; 00:13:59.31\00:14:02.92 prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, 00:14:02.95\00:14:07.12 how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates? 00:14:07.15\00:14:10.98 But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates. 00:14:11.01\00:14:14.69 Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should 00:14:14.72\00:14:19.15 appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, 00:14:19.18\00:14:22.65 though we be as reprobates, for we can do nothing against 00:14:22.68\00:14:26.88 the truth, but for the truth. 00:14:26.91\00:14:29.26 Please join me again next time to read the word of God. 00:14:29.29\00:14:32.80 and to be a blessing to you. 00:14:32.83\00:14:34.94
