Hi, thank you again for joining us for His Words are Life. 00:00:16.03\00:00:19.46 I'm Kelly Mowrer and we'll be reading today from the 00:00:19.49\00:00:22.18 book of Acts. But before we start, let's pray together. 00:00:22.21\00:00:24.65 Dear God, we're coming apart from the things that fill each 00:00:24.68\00:00:29.70 of our days, to spend some time reading Your word. 00:00:29.73\00:00:32.67 We're reading the story of your servant, Paul, who stood boldly 00:00:32.70\00:00:36.76 for You and so many times we fail to even think of ways 00:00:36.80\00:00:42.29 that we could be standing for You. Please help us to learn 00:00:42.32\00:00:46.09 from Paul, the lessons that You want each of us to know. 00:00:46.12\00:00:49.42 Write them into our hearts, and may our walk from here on out 00:00:49.45\00:00:53.40 be more pleasing in your eyes; because we spend this time 00:00:53.43\00:00:56.88 with You today. We love you. Amen 00:00:56.91\00:00:58.87 Hi, again. Thank you for joining me for His Words are Life, and 00:00:58.90\00:01:03.23 we're reading from the King James version, the book of Acts 00:01:03.26\00:01:06.02 Paul is in the middle of being taken from one governor 00:01:06.05\00:01:10.56 to another to hear his case. Nobody can quite decide what 00:01:10.59\00:01:13.55 to do with him because he is a Roman citizen and the Jews 00:01:13.58\00:01:15.98 want to do away with him, but they haven't brought anything 00:01:16.01\00:01:18.10 worthy of this. And he's now in the care of Festus and when we 00:01:18.13\00:01:23.20 left off, King Agrippa and Bernice had come down to visit 00:01:23.23\00:01:26.81 Festus, and Festus was telling them the story of this Paul, 00:01:26.84\00:01:30.38 who's been brought to him by the Jews. And there's accusation 00:01:30.41\00:01:34.34 against him. We pick up now in verse 17 of chapter 25. 00:01:34.37\00:01:39.40 Therefore, when they were come hither, 00:01:39.43\00:01:43.61 - and when he said, "they", talking about the Jews - 00:01:43.64\00:01:46.21 Therefore, when they were come hither, without any delay on the 00:01:46.24\00:01:49.91 morrow I sat on the judgment seat, and commanded the man 00:01:49.94\00:01:52.63 to be brought forth. Against whom when the accusers stood up 00:01:52.66\00:01:56.74 they brought none accusation of such things as I supposed. 00:01:56.77\00:02:01.70 But had certain questions against him of their own 00:02:01.73\00:02:04.47 superstition, and of one Jesus, which was dead, 00:02:04.50\00:02:07.65 whom Paul affirmed to be alive. And because I doubted of such 00:02:07.68\00:02:12.40 manner of questions, I asked him whether he would go to 00:02:12.43\00:02:15.41 Jerusalem, and there be judged of these matters. 00:02:15.44\00:02:17.92 But when Paul had appealed to be reserved unto the hearing of 00:02:17.95\00:02:22.43 Augustus, I commanded him to be kept till I might send him 00:02:22.46\00:02:26.49 to Caesar. Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear 00:02:26.52\00:02:32.17 the man myself. Tomorrow, said he, thou shalt hear him. 00:02:32.20\00:02:36.62 And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, 00:02:36.65\00:02:39.84 and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place 00:02:39.87\00:02:43.78 of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men 00:02:43.81\00:02:46.84 of the city, at Festus' commandment 00:02:46.87\00:02:49.43 Paul was brought forth. And Festus said, King Agrippa, 00:02:49.46\00:02:54.11 and all men which are here present with us, 00:02:54.14\00:02:56.70 ye see this man, about whom all the multitude of the Jews have 00:02:56.73\00:03:01.71 dealt with me, both at Jerusalem and also here, crying that he 00:03:01.74\00:03:06.33 ought not to live any longer. But when I found that he had 00:03:06.36\00:03:10.26 committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath 00:03:10.29\00:03:14.69 appealed to Augustus, I have determined to send him. 00:03:14.72\00:03:17.33 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. 00:03:17.36\00:03:20.94 Wherefore I have brought him forth before you, 00:03:20.97\00:03:24.39 and specially before thee O king Agrippa that, after examination 00:03:24.42\00:03:29.69 had, I might have somewhat to write. For it seemeth to me 00:03:29.72\00:03:34.96 unreasonable to send a prisoner and not withal to signify 00:03:34.99\00:03:38.47 the crimes laid against him. - Again reading from the book of 00:03:38.53\00:03:42.30 Acts in the King James version. We're now beginning chapter 26.- 00:03:42.33\00:03:45.76 Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak 00:03:45.79\00:03:50.84 for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and 00:03:50.87\00:03:55.06 answered for himself: I think myself happy, King Agrippa, 00:03:55.09\00:03:59.60 because I shall answer for myself this day before these 00:03:59.63\00:04:03.34 touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews: 00:04:04.54\00:04:07.16 Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and 00:04:07.19\00:04:12.26 questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee 00:04:12.29\00:04:15.95 to hear me patiently. My manner of life from my youth 00:04:15.98\00:04:20.68 which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, 00:04:20.71\00:04:24.34 know all the Jews; which knew me from the beginning, 00:04:24.37\00:04:28.36 if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect 00:04:28.39\00:04:32.21 of our religion I lived a Pharisee. 00:04:32.24\00:04:35.08 And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made 00:04:35.11\00:04:40.61 of God unto our fathers: Unto which promise our twelve tribes, 00:04:40.64\00:04:44.68 instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. 00:04:44.71\00:04:47.70 For which hope's sake, King Agrippa, I am accused of 00:04:47.73\00:04:51.03 the Jews. Why should it be thought a thing incredible 00:04:51.06\00:04:54.79 with you, that God should raise the dead? 00:04:54.82\00:04:57.03 I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things 00:04:57.06\00:05:01.39 contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. 00:05:01.42\00:05:03.72 Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many 00:05:03.75\00:05:07.54 of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received 00:05:07.57\00:05:11.31 authority from the chief priests and when they were put to death, 00:05:11.34\00:05:14.62 I gave my voice against them. And I punished them oft in every 00:05:14.65\00:05:18.63 synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; 00:05:18.66\00:05:21.12 and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them 00:05:21.15\00:05:24.82 even unto strange cities. Whereupon as I went to Damascus 00:05:24.85\00:05:29.85 with authority and commission from the chief priests; 00:05:29.88\00:05:32.20 At midday, O King, I saw in the way a light from heaven, 00:05:32.23\00:05:37.27 above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them 00:05:37.30\00:05:42.12 which journeyed with me. And when we were all fallen to the 00:05:42.15\00:05:45.46 earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me and saying in the Hebrew 00:05:45.49\00:05:49.24 tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 00:05:49.27\00:05:53.99 it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 00:05:54.02\00:05:57.46 And I said, Who are thou Lord? and he said, I am Jesus 00:05:57.49\00:06:04.49 whom thou persecutest. But rise and stand upon thy feet: 00:06:04.52\00:06:08.63 for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, 00:06:08.66\00:06:11.36 to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things 00:06:11.39\00:06:16.07 which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which 00:06:16.10\00:06:19.23 I will appear unto thee; Delivering thee from the people 00:06:19.26\00:06:22.50 and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee, 00:06:22.53\00:06:25.93 to open their eyes and to turn them from darkness to light, 00:06:25.96\00:06:30.68 and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive 00:06:30.71\00:06:34.53 forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are 00:06:34.56\00:06:38.73 sanctified by faith that is in me. 00:06:38.76\00:06:41.74 Whereupon, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient 00:06:41.77\00:06:46.39 unto the heavenly vision: But shewed first unto them 00:06:46.42\00:06:50.54 of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of 00:06:50.57\00:06:54.14 Judaea, and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn 00:06:54.17\00:06:58.92 to God, and do works meet for repentance. For these causes 00:06:58.95\00:07:05.76 the Jews caught me in the temple and went about to kill me. 00:07:05.79\00:07:08.83 Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day 00:07:08.86\00:07:14.32 witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things 00:07:14.35\00:07:20.24 than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come: 00:07:20.27\00:07:24.02 That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first 00:07:24.05\00:07:28.17 that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the 00:07:28.20\00:07:31.92 people and to the Gentiles. And as he thus spake for himself 00:07:31.95\00:07:36.84 Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; 00:07:36.87\00:07:41.63 much learning doth make thee mad. But he said, I am not mad, 00:07:41.66\00:07:46.47 most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth 00:07:46.50\00:07:50.75 and soberness. For the king knoweth of these things, 00:07:50.78\00:07:55.01 before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of 00:07:55.04\00:07:59.75 these things are hidden from him for this thing was not done 00:07:59.78\00:08:03.22 in a corner. King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? 00:08:03.25\00:08:07.49 I know that thou believest. Then Agrippa said unto Paul, 00:08:07.52\00:08:12.91 Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian. And Paul said, 00:08:12.94\00:08:18.84 I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me 00:08:18.87\00:08:24.31 this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, 00:08:24.34\00:08:30.03 except these bonds. And when he had thus spoken, the king rose 00:08:30.06\00:08:35.62 up, and the governor, and Bernice, 00:08:35.65\00:08:37.80 and they that sat with them: And when they were gone aside, 00:08:37.83\00:08:41.78 they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing 00:08:41.81\00:08:45.60 worthy of death or of bonds. Then said Agrippa unto Festus, 00:08:45.63\00:08:50.62 This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed 00:08:50.65\00:08:54.79 unto Caesar. - We're continuing to read from the book of Acts 00:08:54.82\00:08:59.25 the King James version and we're beginning now chapter 27. 00:08:59.28\00:09:03.77 And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, 00:09:03.80\00:09:07.78 they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named 00:09:07.81\00:09:11.95 Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band. And entering into a ship 00:09:11.98\00:09:18.14 of Adramytium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts 00:09:18.17\00:09:22.86 of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Macedonian of Thessalonica, 00:09:22.89\00:09:28.04 being with us. And the next day we touched at Sidon, 00:09:28.07\00:09:31.82 And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and have him liberty to go 00:09:31.85\00:09:36.60 unto his friends to refresh himself. And when we had 00:09:36.63\00:09:40.41 launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds 00:09:40.44\00:09:44.37 were contrary. And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia 00:09:44.40\00:09:48.25 and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia. 00:09:48.28\00:09:51.74 And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into 00:09:51.77\00:09:57.64 Italy; and he put us therein; And when we had sailed slowly 00:09:57.67\00:10:02.61 many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, 00:10:02.64\00:10:06.44 the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, 00:10:06.47\00:10:10.15 over against Salmone; And, hardly passing it came unto a 00:10:10.18\00:10:15.08 place which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the 00:10:15.11\00:10:19.67 city of Lasea. Now when much time was spent, and when sailing 00:10:19.70\00:10:24.42 was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, 00:10:24.45\00:10:27.62 Paul admonished them, and said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that 00:10:27.65\00:10:32.60 this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, 00:10:32.63\00:10:36.18 not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives. 00:10:36.21\00:10:41.01 Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and 00:10:41.04\00:10:45.56 the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken 00:10:45.59\00:10:48.79 by Paul. And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, 00:10:48.82\00:10:53.31 the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means 00:10:53.34\00:10:58.92 they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; 00:10:58.95\00:11:01.73 which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south-west 00:11:01.76\00:11:05.53 and north-west. And when the south wind blew softly, 00:11:05.56\00:11:09.70 supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, 00:11:09.73\00:11:13.72 they sailed close by Crete. But not long after there arose 00:11:13.75\00:11:18.97 against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon. 00:11:19.00\00:11:23.12 And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into 00:11:23.15\00:11:26.55 the wind, we let her drive. And running under a certain island 00:11:26.58\00:11:30.59 which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat: 00:11:30.62\00:11:34.21 which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding 00:11:34.24\00:11:38.26 the ship; and fearing lest they should fall into the 00:11:38.29\00:11:41.75 quicksand's, strake sail, and so were driven. And we being 00:11:41.78\00:11:48.26 exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they 00:11:48.29\00:11:51.09 lightened the ship; And the third day we cast out with our 00:11:51.12\00:11:54.57 own hands the tackling of the ship. And when neither sun nor 00:11:54.60\00:11:58.37 stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, 00:11:58.40\00:12:02.22 all hope that we should be saved was then taken away. 00:12:02.25\00:12:06.35 But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them 00:12:06.38\00:12:11.61 and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, 00:12:11.64\00:12:14.36 and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm 00:12:14.39\00:12:17.92 and loss. And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: 00:12:17.95\00:12:22.43 for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, 00:12:22.46\00:12:26.33 but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel 00:12:26.36\00:12:31.00 of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; 00:12:31.03\00:12:36.67 thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, 00:12:36.70\00:12:40.14 God hath given thee all them that sail with thee. 00:12:40.17\00:12:43.56 Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, 00:12:43.59\00:12:47.73 that it shall be even as it was told me. Howbeit we must be cast 00:12:47.76\00:12:53.50 upon a certain island. But when the fourteenth night was come 00:12:53.53\00:12:58.08 as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight 00:12:58.11\00:13:02.88 the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country; 00:13:02.91\00:13:06.50 and sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: 00:13:06.53\00:13:09.81 and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, 00:13:09.84\00:13:13.12 and found it fifteen fathoms. Then fearing lest we should have 00:13:13.15\00:13:17.31 fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, 00:13:17.34\00:13:21.37 and wished for the day. And as the shipmen were about to flee 00:13:21.40\00:13:25.51 out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, 00:13:25.54\00:13:28.52 under colour as though they would have cast anchors out 00:13:28.55\00:13:31.00 of the foreship, Paul said to the centurion 00:13:31.03\00:13:33.77 and unto the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, 00:13:33.80\00:13:37.42 we cannot be saved. Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of 00:13:37.45\00:13:41.85 the boat, and let her fall off. And while the day was coming on, 00:13:41.88\00:13:44.96 Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is 00:13:44.99\00:13:49.31 the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, 00:13:49.35\00:13:52.34 having taken nothing. Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: 00:13:52.37\00:13:56.11 for this is for you health: for there shall not an hair fall 00:13:56.14\00:14:00.24 from the head of any of you. And when he had thus spoken, 00:14:00.27\00:14:04.20 he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: 00:14:04.23\00:14:07.58 and when he had broken it, he began to eat. 00:14:07.61\00:14:10.03 Then were they all of good cheer and they also took some meat. 00:14:10.06\00:14:14.89 And we were in all the ship two hundred threescore and 00:14:14.92\00:14:18.92 and sixteen souls. And when they had eaten enough, they lightened 00:14:18.95\00:14:22.61 the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea. 00:14:22.64\00:14:25.76 Thank you for joining me today to read the word of God. 00:14:25.79\00:14:29.05 Please come again and join us nest time. Until then God bless 00:14:29.08\00:14:32.51 you. Goodbye. 00:14:32.54\00:14:33.78
