Hi, and welcome back to His Words Are Life. 00:00:15.41\00:00:17.98 I'm Kelly Mowrer. 00:00:18.01\00:00:19.26 We'll be reading today from the King James version in the book 00:00:19.29\00:00:22.45 of Acts, but before we begin lets pray together. 00:00:22.48\00:00:25.89 Dear Jesus, thank you so much for the opportunity to 00:00:25.92\00:00:31.83 come apart from the things that fill our days, and to come into 00:00:31.86\00:00:36.97 Your presence, and to read Your words. 00:00:37.00\00:00:39.24 Please send the Holy Spirit now to guide our minds and to give 00:00:39.27\00:00:43.58 us a deeper understanding of the truth and the life that Your 00:00:43.61\00:00:47.78 word has for each one of us. 00:00:47.81\00:00:49.31 We love you. 00:00:49.34\00:00:50.31 Thank you. 00:00:50.32\00:00:51.29 Amen. 00:00:51.30\00:00:53.07 We are reading again from the book of Acts. 00:00:53.10\00:00:55.49 And when we were last together we were reading how the church 00:00:56.20\00:00:58.53 in Jerusalem sent a letter to the new believers, the Gentiles 00:00:58.56\00:01:02.25 in Antioch. 00:01:02.28\00:01:03.25 And they sent their two prophets, Judas and Silas. 00:01:03.26\00:01:06.41 We'll pick up now in Chapter 15, verse 34. 00:01:06.44\00:01:11.04 Notwithstanding it pleased Silas to abide there still. 00:01:11.07\00:01:15.70 Paul also and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and 00:01:15.73\00:01:20.04 preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also. 00:01:20.07\00:01:22.87 And some days after, Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again 00:01:22.90\00:01:27.81 and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the 00:01:27.84\00:01:31.05 word of the Lord, and see how they do. 00:01:31.08\00:01:33.27 And Barnabas determined to take him with them John, 00:01:33.30\00:01:36.83 whose surname was Mark. 00:01:36.86\00:01:38.17 But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed 00:01:38.20\00:01:43.15 from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work. 00:01:43.18\00:01:46.48 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed 00:01:46.51\00:01:52.11 asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, 00:01:52.14\00:01:56.48 and sailed unto Cyprus; and Paul chose Silas, and departed, 00:01:56.51\00:02:00.61 being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God. 00:02:00.64\00:02:03.99 And he went through Syria and Cilicia, 00:02:04.02\00:02:06.82 confirming the churches. 00:02:06.85\00:02:08.61 We're reading from the book of Acts, the King James Version, 00:02:08.64\00:02:11.92 Chapter 16. 00:02:11.95\00:02:13.59 Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain 00:02:13.62\00:02:19.52 disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain 00:02:19.55\00:02:22.98 woman which was a Jewest, and believed that his father was a 00:02:23.01\00:02:26.50 Greek: which was well reported of by the brethren that were at 00:02:26.54\00:02:30.00 Lystra and Iconium. 00:02:30.03\00:02:31.84 Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and 00:02:31.87\00:02:35.85 circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those 00:02:35.88\00:02:38.22 quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek. 00:02:38.25\00:02:42.18 And as they went through the cities, they delivered them 00:02:42.21\00:02:45.47 the decrees for to keep, that were ordained of the apostles 00:02:45.50\00:02:48.98 and elders which were at Jerusalem. 00:02:49.01\00:02:50.86 And so were the churches established in the faith, 00:02:50.89\00:02:54.22 and increased in number daily. 00:02:54.25\00:02:56.59 Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the 00:02:56.62\00:03:00.42 region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to 00:03:00.45\00:03:03.93 preach the word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia, 00:03:03.96\00:03:07.59 they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit 00:03:07.62\00:03:10.95 suffered them not. 00:03:10.98\00:03:11.95 And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas. 00:03:11.96\00:03:16.35 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of 00:03:16.38\00:03:21.03 Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into 00:03:21.06\00:03:24.58 Macedonia, and help us. 00:03:24.61\00:03:26.56 And after he had seen the vision, immediately we 00:03:26.59\00:03:30.50 endeavored to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that 00:03:30.53\00:03:34.80 the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them. 00:03:34.83\00:03:37.77 Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to 00:03:37.80\00:03:43.71 Samothracia, and the next day to Neapolis; and from thence to 00:03:43.74\00:03:48.78 Philippi, which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia, 00:03:48.81\00:03:52.02 and a colony: and we were in that city abiding certain days. 00:03:52.05\00:03:56.57 And on the Sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, 00:03:56.60\00:04:01.09 where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, 00:04:01.12\00:04:04.53 and spake unto the women which resorted thither. 00:04:04.56\00:04:08.02 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city 00:04:08.05\00:04:13.19 of Thyatira, which worshiped God, heard us: whose heart the 00:04:13.22\00:04:18.02 Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were 00:04:18.05\00:04:21.46 spoken of Paul. 00:04:21.49\00:04:22.76 And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, 00:04:22.79\00:04:27.97 saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, 00:04:28.00\00:04:31.74 come into my house, and abide there. 00:04:31.77\00:04:34.06 And she constrained us. 00:04:34.09\00:04:35.78 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel 00:04:35.81\00:04:40.80 possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought 00:04:40.83\00:04:45.51 her masters much gain by soothsaying: the same followed 00:04:45.54\00:04:49.73 Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of 00:04:49.76\00:04:54.15 the most high God, which show unto us the way of salvation. 00:04:54.18\00:04:58.11 And this did she many days. 00:04:58.14\00:05:01.55 But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, 00:05:01.58\00:05:06.47 I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. 00:05:06.50\00:05:11.35 And he came out the same hour. 00:05:11.38\00:05:13.74 And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was 00:05:13.77\00:05:18.43 gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the 00:05:18.46\00:05:22.58 market place unto the rulers. 00:05:22.61\00:05:24.60 And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, 00:05:24.63\00:05:28.39 being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city, and teach 00:05:28.42\00:05:32.45 customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to 00:05:32.48\00:05:36.04 observe, being Romans. 00:05:36.07\00:05:37.66 And the multitude rose up together against them; 00:05:37.69\00:05:41.13 and the magistrates rent off their clothes, 00:05:41.16\00:05:43.99 and commanded to beat them. 00:05:44.02\00:05:45.58 And when they had laid many stripes upon them, 00:05:45.61\00:05:49.39 they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them 00:05:49.42\00:05:53.61 safely: who, having received such a charge, thrust them into 00:05:53.64\00:05:59.18 the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks. 00:05:59.21\00:06:03.46 And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto 00:06:03.49\00:06:08.31 God: and the prisoners heard them. 00:06:08.34\00:06:10.52 And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the 00:06:10.55\00:06:14.63 foundations of the prison were shaken: and immediately all the 00:06:14.66\00:06:19.00 doors were opened, and every one's bands were loosed. 00:06:19.03\00:06:22.55 And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, 00:06:22.58\00:06:26.49 and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, 00:06:26.52\00:06:30.01 and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners 00:06:30.04\00:06:33.28 had been fled. 00:06:33.31\00:06:34.36 But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no 00:06:34.39\00:06:37.87 harm: for we are all here. 00:06:37.90\00:06:40.11 Then he called for a light, and sprang in, and came trembling, 00:06:40.14\00:06:44.26 and fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out, 00:06:44.29\00:06:48.39 and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved? 00:06:48.42\00:06:51.67 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:06:51.70\00:06:54.71 and thou shalt be saved, and thy house. 00:06:54.74\00:06:57.32 And they spake unto him the word of the Lord, and to all that 00:06:57.35\00:07:01.20 were in his house. 00:07:01.23\00:07:02.20 And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their 00:07:02.21\00:07:06.33 stripes; and was baptized, he and all his, straightway. 00:07:06.36\00:07:11.55 And when he had brought them into his house, he set meat 00:07:11.58\00:07:14.97 before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with 00:07:15.00\00:07:19.09 all his house. 00:07:19.12\00:07:20.28 And when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, 00:07:20.31\00:07:24.44 saying, Let those men go. 00:07:24.47\00:07:26.75 And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, 00:07:26.78\00:07:30.38 The magistrates have sent to let you go: now therefore depart, 00:07:30.41\00:07:34.78 and go in peace. 00:07:34.81\00:07:35.87 But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly 00:07:35.90\00:07:40.95 uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; 00:07:40.98\00:07:45.84 and now do they thrust us out privily? nay verily; 00:07:45.87\00:07:50.73 but let them come themselves and fetch us out. 00:07:50.76\00:07:53.54 And the sergeants told these words unto the magistrates: 00:07:53.57\00:07:57.79 and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans. 00:07:57.82\00:08:01.66 And they came and besought them, and brought them out, 00:08:01.69\00:08:04.05 and desired them to depart out of the city. 00:08:04.19\00:08:06.14 And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of 00:08:06.17\00:08:09.67 Lydia: and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted 00:08:09.70\00:08:13.03 them, and departed. 00:08:13.06\00:08:14.84 We're reading from the book of Acts, Chapter 17. 00:08:14.87\00:08:19.32 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, 00:08:19.35\00:08:24.07 they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews: 00:08:24.10\00:08:28.41 and Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, 00:08:28.44\00:08:32.43 and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the Scriptures, 00:08:32.46\00:08:36.11 opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, 00:08:36.14\00:08:40.18 and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, 00:08:40.21\00:08:43.86 whom I preach unto you, is Christ. 00:08:43.89\00:08:46.28 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; 00:08:46.31\00:08:50.33 and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief 00:08:50.36\00:08:54.98 women not a few. 00:08:55.01\00:08:56.54 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them 00:08:56.57\00:09:02.21 certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a 00:09:02.24\00:09:05.59 company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the 00:09:05.62\00:09:10.46 house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people. 00:09:10.49\00:09:13.59 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain 00:09:13.62\00:09:17.70 brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have 00:09:17.73\00:09:21.29 turned the world upside down are come hither also; whom Jason 00:09:21.32\00:09:25.36 hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of 00:09:25.39\00:09:29.25 Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus. 00:09:29.28\00:09:33.53 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, 00:09:33.56\00:09:36.51 when they heard these things. 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.21 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, 00:09:38.24\00:09:41.74 they let them go. 00:09:41.77\00:09:42.74 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by 00:09:42.75\00:09:47.39 night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue 00:09:47.42\00:09:52.07 of the Jews. 00:09:52.10\00:09:53.07 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they 00:09:53.08\00:09:57.69 received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched 00:09:57.72\00:10:02.30 the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. 00:10:02.33\00:10:05.43 Therefore many of them believed; also of honorable women which 00:10:05.46\00:10:10.29 were Greeks, and of men, not a few. 00:10:10.32\00:10:12.71 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that 00:10:12.74\00:10:17.42 the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither 00:10:17.45\00:10:21.80 also, and stirred up the people. 00:10:21.83\00:10:23.77 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as 00:10:23.80\00:10:28.37 it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. 00:10:28.40\00:10:33.33 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens; 00:10:33.36\00:10:37.49 and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to 00:10:37.52\00:10:41.67 come to him with all speed, they departed. 00:10:41.70\00:10:44.44 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was 00:10:44.47\00:10:49.01 stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. 00:10:49.04\00:10:53.46 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, 00:10:53.49\00:10:57.68 and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them 00:10:57.71\00:11:00.75 that met with him. 00:11:00.78\00:11:02.05 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, 00:11:02.08\00:11:06.82 encountered him. 00:11:06.85\00:11:07.90 And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, 00:11:07.93\00:11:13.33 He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he 00:11:13.36\00:11:17.42 preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. 00:11:17.45\00:11:20.19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, 00:11:20.22\00:11:24.54 May we know what this new doctrine, whereof 00:11:24.57\00:11:27.36 thou speakest, is? 00:11:27.39\00:11:28.88 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: 00:11:28.91\00:11:32.61 we would know therefore what these things mean. 00:11:32.64\00:11:35.23 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent 00:11:35.26\00:11:39.38 their time in nothing else, but either to tell or to hear 00:11:39.41\00:11:42.84 some new thing.) 00:11:42.87\00:11:43.84 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, 00:11:43.85\00:11:48.56 Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye 00:11:48.59\00:11:52.78 are too superstitious. 00:11:52.81\00:11:54.22 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar 00:11:54.25\00:11:59.55 with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. 00:11:59.58\00:12:03.42 Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you. 00:12:03.45\00:12:09.23 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he 00:12:09.26\00:12:14.27 is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples 00:12:14.30\00:12:17.57 made with hands; neither is worshiped with men's hands, 00:12:17.60\00:12:21.39 as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, 00:12:21.42\00:12:25.32 and breath, and all things; and hath made of one blood all 00:12:25.35\00:12:29.83 nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, 00:12:29.86\00:12:33.35 and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds 00:12:33.38\00:12:36.65 of their habitation; that they should seek the Lord, 00:12:36.68\00:12:39.77 if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be 00:12:39.80\00:12:43.91 not far from every one of us: for in him we live, and move, 00:12:43.94\00:12:48.95 and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have 00:12:48.98\00:12:52.67 said, For we are also his offspring. 00:12:52.70\00:12:55.91 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not 00:12:55.94\00:13:00.55 to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, 00:13:00.58\00:13:04.24 or stone, graven by art and man's device. 00:13:04.27\00:13:08.63 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now 00:13:08.66\00:13:13.91 commandeth all men everywhere to repent: because he hath 00:13:13.94\00:13:17.97 appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in 00:13:18.00\00:13:21.78 righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained;
