Pope Francis visits America. 00:00:09.20\00:00:11.27 Is Protestantism alive or dead? 00:00:11.31\00:00:14.18 That's our topic next on His Voice Today. 00:00:14.21\00:00:17.08 A thousand years before there was a Protestant 00:00:17.11\00:00:20.82 there were Sunday Laws that originated in Pagan Sun Worship. 00:00:20.85\00:00:24.29 For centuries the church ruled the world 00:00:24.32\00:00:26.79 until the Protestant Reformation 00:00:26.82\00:00:28.76 with men, like Martin Luther, 00:00:28.79\00:00:30.26 champion of personal and religious freedom. 00:00:30.29\00:00:32.66 Thousands fled to America to seek freedom 00:00:32.69\00:00:34.96 from religious tyranny 00:00:35.00\00:00:36.33 where Protestants and freedom-loving Americans 00:00:36.36\00:00:38.70 fight to keep freedom alive 00:00:38.73\00:00:40.10 or will we descend into a modern dark age. 00:00:40.14\00:00:43.81 The Vanishing Protestant... the Reformation is not dead! 00:00:43.84\00:00:47.64 On September 24, 2015, 00:00:47.68\00:00:50.65 Pope Francis speaks to a joint-session of U.S. Congress, 00:00:50.68\00:00:53.62 September 25, 2015, 00:00:53.65\00:00:55.82 Pope Francis speaks in New York City 00:00:55.85\00:00:57.75 to a massive gathering of world leaders for the United Nations. 00:00:57.79\00:01:01.06 Pope Francis continues to get 00:01:01.09\00:01:02.59 a large amount of media coverage around the world. 00:01:02.62\00:01:05.16 Historically, the Protestant Reformation 00:01:05.19\00:01:07.70 rose up as a protest 00:01:07.73\00:01:09.06 against the traditions and doctrines 00:01:09.10\00:01:11.10 of the Roman Catholic Church. 00:01:11.13\00:01:12.47 Should people still be protesting today? 00:01:12.50\00:01:14.80 That's our topic on His Voice Today. 00:01:14.84\00:01:17.61 Elder Coridan, thank you for joining me 00:01:17.64\00:01:20.41 Dean Coridan, you are my guest, 00:01:20.44\00:01:22.54 you are the Conference President of the Iowa-Missouri Conference 00:01:22.58\00:01:25.98 of Seventh-day Adventists. Yes. 00:01:26.01\00:01:27.35 You're also a Pastor 00:01:27.38\00:01:28.72 and I'm assuming, you're a family man as well. 00:01:28.75\00:01:31.19 I am... You are... 00:01:31.22\00:01:32.59 and you have done a lot of study 00:01:32.62\00:01:34.66 on the Protestant Reformation as I have. 00:01:34.69\00:01:37.46 I've got a number of books here 00:01:37.49\00:01:39.16 that I know you're familiar with. 00:01:39.19\00:01:40.76 "The History of the Reformation of the 16th Century" 00:01:40.80\00:01:43.10 this is a massive book by Merle D'Aubigne 00:01:43.16\00:01:45.83 another one by H. Grattan Guinness 00:01:45.87\00:01:48.07 called, "Romanism and the Reformation. " 00:01:48.10\00:01:49.84 I've read this book from cover to cover 00:01:49.90\00:01:51.57 one of England's greatest prophecy teachers. 00:01:51.61\00:01:54.74 Another book called, 00:01:54.78\00:01:56.11 "The History of the Ancient Waldenses" 00:01:56.14\00:01:58.11 "The Waldensians" 00:01:58.15\00:01:59.48 "The Vaudois" they were also called, 00:01:59.51\00:02:00.92 covering the history of persecution 00:02:00.95\00:02:02.82 in North Italy, Southern France, 00:02:02.88\00:02:04.65 and "50 years in the Church of Rome: 00:02:04.72\00:02:06.72 The Conversion of a Priest" by Charles Chiniquy. 00:02:06.76\00:02:09.66 You are familiar with these books, 00:02:09.72\00:02:11.79 I'm familiar with them, and there's just a lot 00:02:11.83\00:02:14.33 that we need to know and understand 00:02:14.36\00:02:17.30 and comprehend concerning history 00:02:17.33\00:02:20.20 in order to really grasp what the issues are today 00:02:20.24\00:02:23.37 so, take us back... just to help people 00:02:23.41\00:02:25.64 who may not be familiar with this 00:02:25.67\00:02:27.08 to just get some of the history behind this, 00:02:27.11\00:02:30.98 let's just rewind about 500 years ago 00:02:31.01\00:02:33.72 what was going on in Catholic Europe... in the 1500s? 00:02:33.75\00:02:37.69 Well if you study this topic of Western Civilization 00:02:37.72\00:02:41.62 in High School, 00:02:41.66\00:02:42.99 that period of time would be termed the "Dark Ages. " 00:02:43.02\00:02:46.86 The Dark Ages... 00:02:46.90\00:02:48.23 The Ruling Power in Europe at that time 00:02:48.26\00:02:51.17 was the Roman Church 00:02:51.20\00:02:52.53 and the State yielded to the Church 00:02:52.57\00:02:56.47 and the Church demanded things of the State. 00:02:56.50\00:02:59.64 People did not have the Word of God. 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.11 They were not allowed to have the Word of God 00:03:02.14\00:03:05.21 and even after the Gutenberg Press came 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.05 and the first book published was the Bible... 00:03:08.08\00:03:10.95 That was in 1450... 00:03:10.99\00:03:12.32 Even then... if you were found with a copy of the Word of God, 00:03:12.35\00:03:16.12 your life would be forfeited. 00:03:16.16\00:03:18.29 The church controlled... 00:03:18.33\00:03:20.36 Salvation was only through the church, 00:03:20.40\00:03:23.57 truth was defined by the church, 00:03:23.60\00:03:27.37 the priest was everything to the family, 00:03:27.40\00:03:31.37 it truly was the "Dark Ages. " 00:03:31.41\00:03:33.64 And the Inquisition was also in full force. 00:03:33.68\00:03:37.21 Many, many people... history tells us 00:03:37.25\00:03:40.02 millions of people forfeited their lives 00:03:40.05\00:03:42.78 because of the Freedom of Conscience Principle 00:03:42.82\00:03:46.25 of having the Word of God, many people sacrificed their lives. 00:03:46.29\00:03:48.32 They were arrested secretly often, 00:03:48.36\00:03:50.49 they were taken to secret Tribunals underneath Monasteries 00:03:50.53\00:03:54.60 they were often tortured, they were put to death, 00:03:54.63\00:03:56.73 because their conscience told them 00:03:56.77\00:03:58.80 that they shouldn't go along or couldn't go along 00:03:58.83\00:04:00.77 with some of the teachings of the Roman Church, 00:04:00.80\00:04:02.64 and so, liberty of conscience, was just really not available 00:04:02.67\00:04:07.44 to the average person in Europe in the 1500s. 00:04:07.48\00:04:10.51 Now, Martin Luther comes along and Luther was a Catholic 00:04:10.55\00:04:13.95 he was a Catholic Priest and eventually from my study... 00:04:14.02\00:04:17.29 he found a copy of a Latin Bible 00:04:17.32\00:04:19.72 and he began to read it. 00:04:19.75\00:04:21.39 He eventually became a Professor 00:04:21.42\00:04:23.76 at the University of Wittenberg in Germany 00:04:23.79\00:04:25.79 and I've visited Wittenberg, I've seen the statue of Luther 00:04:25.83\00:04:28.86 I've seen the Castle Door 00:04:28.90\00:04:30.87 where he nailed the Ninety-Five Theses to the church, 00:04:30.90\00:04:34.14 and this helped spark the reformation 00:04:34.17\00:04:36.60 so when Luther started reading the Bible, 00:04:36.64\00:04:38.97 for the first time in his life, what did he find? 00:04:39.04\00:04:41.78 Luther was not the first of the Reformers 00:04:41.84\00:04:45.48 but probably the best, well-known, 00:04:45.51\00:04:47.92 greatest of the Reformers. 00:04:47.95\00:04:49.52 I think it's hard for us to imagine today 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.82 that when a man like Martin Luther 00:04:52.85\00:04:55.96 who has dedicated his life to the church, 00:04:55.99\00:04:59.29 has dedicated his life to God, 00:04:59.36\00:05:02.16 and then begin to feel the weight of sin, 00:05:02.23\00:05:05.00 and not have a sense of salvation 00:05:05.03\00:05:08.17 or a peace or a forgiveness of what that would do 00:05:08.20\00:05:12.57 and if you would read his life story, 00:05:12.61\00:05:14.54 there are many biographies, he is the most written-about man 00:05:14.58\00:05:17.25 in Western Society. 00:05:17.28\00:05:18.85 Outside of Jesus, I think he's number two. 00:05:18.88\00:05:20.22 That's right, that's right, of how he would fast 00:05:20.25\00:05:24.55 and abuse his body, go on long pilgrimages, 00:05:24.59\00:05:28.86 doing everything he could by "works" to find forgiveness 00:05:28.89\00:05:33.26 and to find peace with God. 00:05:33.29\00:05:34.93 For him to find a Bible and to begin to read it, 00:05:34.96\00:05:38.43 and the words having an effect on his heart, 00:05:38.47\00:05:41.84 it was a powerful influence that would bring a day of light 00:05:41.87\00:05:46.54 to the whole world. 00:05:46.57\00:05:47.91 I think it was Luther who said, 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.34 "If any monk could get to heaven by his monkish works, 00:05:49.38\00:05:51.71 it would be me" that... he just... 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.02 he never found that peace 00:05:54.05\00:05:55.38 and then eventually he... 00:05:55.42\00:05:56.75 as you said... he studied the Bible, 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.12 I think there was one particular text 00:05:58.15\00:05:59.72 and I think you've got it there in Romans chapter 1 verse 17, 00:05:59.75\00:06:02.69 this became really a... just a driving force 00:06:02.72\00:06:06.06 behind Luther's... the rest of his life... 00:06:06.09\00:06:08.36 Well this verse becomes connected to a great story 00:06:08.40\00:06:11.63 with Martin Luther and he was reading in Romans 1, 00:06:11.67\00:06:14.87 and he came to verse 17 and it says, 00:06:14.90\00:06:17.54 and then it struck him 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.31 and of course it didn't have the impact on him then... 00:06:27.38\00:06:31.35 but it was in his heart and mind, 00:06:31.39\00:06:33.52 and the story is told that he went to Rome, 00:06:33.56\00:06:35.86 he went on a pilgrimage, he went to the staircase 00:06:35.92\00:06:38.49 where he would crawl up on his knees 00:06:38.53\00:06:41.70 seeking peace, seeking for forgiveness, 00:06:41.73\00:06:44.90 seeking through the traditions of the church, 00:06:44.93\00:06:46.94 when halfway up that staircase, it was as if... a loud voice... 00:06:46.97\00:06:52.01 it came to him... "the just shall live by faith" 00:06:52.07\00:06:55.04 that was a turning point in Martin Luther's life. 00:06:55.08\00:06:58.01 The story is... he got up, walked down those stairs, 00:06:58.05\00:07:01.22 went back to Wittenberg and there's where he began 00:07:01.25\00:07:04.39 to really develop the Protestant Reformation 00:07:04.42\00:07:06.96 that would ultimately be of benefit to all of us. 00:07:06.99\00:07:09.86 It would alter the course of history... 00:07:09.89\00:07:11.33 Forever... And so, he began to protest... 00:07:11.36\00:07:12.69 at first, I understand, with all the study I've done 00:07:12.73\00:07:14.50 that he really tried to reform the church, 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.46 he thought that maybe the Pope would be agreeable 00:07:16.50\00:07:18.33 and the church would want to know 00:07:18.40\00:07:20.07 what was in the Bible and find out 00:07:20.10\00:07:21.70 that we don't have to do all these rites and ceremonies 00:07:21.74\00:07:24.21 we don't have to confess to priests 00:07:24.24\00:07:25.87 and go through Mary, 00:07:25.91\00:07:27.34 and we don't have to do all these monkish works 00:07:27.38\00:07:29.58 but we can come directly to Jesus 00:07:29.61\00:07:32.38 and he tried to send this information out 00:07:32.41\00:07:35.82 but word came back from Headquarters 00:07:35.85\00:07:37.85 from the Vatican that if he didn't give up 00:07:37.89\00:07:39.85 his strange heretical doctrines, that he would be put to death 00:07:39.89\00:07:44.49 and wasn't that what really motivated him 00:07:44.53\00:07:47.83 to really take a stand 00:07:47.86\00:07:49.60 that I'm going to stand up for God no matter what... 00:07:49.63\00:07:53.03 Yes, in fact, the goal of his life at that point then 00:07:53.10\00:07:55.47 when he started... as you said... 00:07:55.50\00:07:57.24 he wasn't trying to make the break 00:07:57.27\00:07:58.97 with the church... but when things began to develop 00:07:59.01\00:08:02.64 and the principles of Scripture and faith alone 00:08:02.68\00:08:06.25 and grace alone, were being rejected 00:08:06.28\00:08:08.72 the goal of his life became to translate the Bible 00:08:08.75\00:08:12.52 and to give the Bible in a "readable form" 00:08:12.55\00:08:15.69 to the common man. 00:08:15.72\00:08:17.06 That's right... and these he mentioned, 00:08:17.09\00:08:18.43 "Sola Scriptura" 00:08:18.46\00:08:20.33 these were the famous phrases of the Reformation, 00:08:20.36\00:08:24.13 Sola Scriptura meaning "by Scripture alone" 00:08:24.17\00:08:26.33 "Sola fida" meaning, by faith alone, 00:08:26.37\00:08:28.97 "Sola gratia" meaning, by grace alone, 00:08:29.00\00:08:31.57 through Jesus Christ alone, 00:08:31.61\00:08:33.48 and Luther discovered that Jesus was his Savior, 00:08:33.54\00:08:37.21 not all of his works, following the traditions of men 00:08:37.25\00:08:41.72 and so he began to protest, and this is where the 00:08:41.75\00:08:44.55 "Protestant Reformation" came where he was protesting 00:08:44.62\00:08:49.36 against the corruptions and the traditions 00:08:49.39\00:08:51.26 that had come into Christianity 00:08:51.29\00:08:53.43 and were especially being promoted by the Roman Church. 00:08:53.46\00:08:56.70 Now, something that's very significant 00:08:56.73\00:08:59.13 is... eventually... Luther turned to the prophecies 00:08:59.17\00:09:01.64 and he began studying prophecies 00:09:01.67\00:09:03.47 as the prophecies of Daniel and Revelation 00:09:03.51\00:09:05.77 as other Protestants began to do 00:09:05.81\00:09:09.21 and I read a book called, "Christ and the Antichrist" 00:09:09.24\00:09:12.58 dealing with the Reformation and one of the classic lines 00:09:12.61\00:09:15.95 is that Luther... 00:09:15.98\00:09:17.65 not only discovered Jesus Christ by studying the Bible, 00:09:17.72\00:09:21.42 but he also discovered Antichrist 00:09:21.46\00:09:24.36 and eventually the Protestant Reformers 00:09:24.39\00:09:27.40 as a class... and that includes John Calvin... later on... 00:09:27.43\00:09:31.90 Zwingli... Zwingli... 00:09:31.93\00:09:33.47 John Wesley who founded the Methodist Church, 00:09:33.50\00:09:36.71 Knox... Spurgeon... 00:09:36.77\00:09:38.17 that great Baptist Pastor, 00:09:38.21\00:09:39.74 it was pretty unanimous that when they studied Revelation 00:09:39.77\00:09:43.28 and read about the beast in Revelation 13 00:09:43.31\00:09:45.68 who had a mouth speaking great things, 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.98 and who made war on the saints, and he was given authority 00:09:48.05\00:09:51.55 over peoples and tongues and nations, 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.29 that they, pretty much, unanimously, 00:09:54.32\00:09:56.93 looked at the beast, 00:09:56.99\00:09:58.33 looked at the prophecy about the beast, 00:09:58.36\00:10:01.06 looked at the Roman Church, 00:10:01.10\00:10:02.43 looked at the prophecy, looked at the Roman church, 00:10:02.46\00:10:04.70 and they came to the conclusion 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.04 that the Roman Power was the beast 00:10:07.07\00:10:09.30 of prophecy and they began to preach this 00:10:09.34\00:10:11.64 and this is what really shook Europe, 00:10:11.67\00:10:13.94 it wasn't just that salvation was through Jesus Christ alone, 00:10:13.98\00:10:16.38 but it was that the beast of prophecy 00:10:16.44\00:10:19.28 was ruling on the throne and it was doing exactly 00:10:19.31\00:10:22.88 what the Scriptures predicted. 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.89 Well, can you imagine the concept 00:10:24.92\00:10:26.86 that you could go to Jesus alone... yourself... 00:10:26.89\00:10:31.09 the Bible says, "For we have a High Priest 00:10:31.16\00:10:34.90 that we can go to Him. " Hebrews chapter 4, 00:10:34.93\00:10:38.30 we can go to Him... when all you've been taught 00:10:38.33\00:10:41.64 your whole life for hundreds of years 00:10:41.67\00:10:44.11 is that your salvation is dependent 00:10:44.14\00:10:46.31 upon your connection to the church. 00:10:46.34\00:10:48.88 If the church would excommunicate you 00:10:48.91\00:10:51.25 it would be impossible for you to be saved. 00:10:51.28\00:10:53.58 If you didn't have a priest involved in your life 00:10:53.62\00:10:56.95 for the forgiveness of sin, 00:10:56.99\00:10:58.39 if you weren't doing penance, then... there was no forgiveness 00:10:58.42\00:11:02.59 can you imagine, news comes... 00:11:02.62\00:11:05.29 a man would stand up and say, "No, that System is wrong, 00:11:05.33\00:11:09.60 in fact that System is Antichrist... 00:11:09.63\00:11:12.70 because you can go to Christ... alone" 00:11:12.73\00:11:15.34 and Luther said that anything... 00:11:15.37\00:11:17.91 he taught that anything... 00:11:17.94\00:11:19.54 that would become between the individual 00:11:19.57\00:11:22.68 and the relationship with Jesus would be an Antichrist. 00:11:22.71\00:11:26.58 Wow! here's a statement from D'Aubigne... 00:11:26.61\00:11:28.52 D'Aubigne's classic book it says, 00:11:28.55\00:11:30.12 "Luther proved by the revelations of Daniel, 00:11:30.15\00:11:32.12 Saint John and by the Epistles of Saint Paul, 00:11:32.15\00:11:34.06 Saint Peter and Saint Jude, that the reign of Antichrist 00:11:34.09\00:11:36.99 predicted and described in the Bible was the Papacy, 00:11:37.03\00:11:39.79 a holy terror seized upon their souls, 00:11:39.83\00:11:42.43 it was Antichrist whom they beheld 00:11:42.46\00:11:44.60 seated on the Pontifical throne. 00:11:44.63\00:11:46.27 This new idea which dealt.. derived greater strength 00:11:46.30\00:11:49.44 from the prophetic descriptions launched forth by Luther 00:11:49.47\00:11:52.54 into the midst of his contemporaries, 00:11:52.57\00:11:54.21 inflicted the most terrible blow on Rome. " 00:11:54.24\00:11:56.75 So, this is history, these are facts of history, 00:11:56.78\00:11:59.95 now, take us down from the... 00:11:59.98\00:12:02.12 from Luther's protest 00:12:02.18\00:12:03.62 to the development of Protestantism as a Movement... 00:12:03.65\00:12:06.09 and then how that affected the rise of America 00:12:06.12\00:12:08.76 on the shores of the New World. 00:12:08.82\00:12:11.89 Well, America is found in Revelation chapter 12 00:12:11.93\00:12:15.90 and Revelation chapter 13. 00:12:15.93\00:12:17.43 History tells us that because persecution became so great 00:12:17.47\00:12:21.57 that people begin to have to flee to other countries 00:12:21.60\00:12:24.57 and it would go from place to place, 00:12:24.61\00:12:27.34 to place, people were hiding in Europe, 00:12:27.38\00:12:30.11 they were hiding in the mountains, but ultimately, 00:12:30.15\00:12:33.72 American History would come on stage in world history 00:12:33.75\00:12:37.32 because people fled for religious persecution, 00:12:37.35\00:12:41.02 to escape religious persecution, 00:12:41.06\00:12:43.66 people fled to the shores of America. 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.83 And eventually when... as America continued to grow 00:12:45.86\00:12:48.46 went through a lot of development 00:12:48.50\00:12:50.10 finally we have the time of the Constitution 00:12:50.13\00:12:51.97 and the First Amendment of the Constitution says that 00:12:52.00\00:12:54.47 Congress shall make no law 00:12:54.50\00:12:57.01 respecting an establishment of Religion, 00:12:57.04\00:12:59.84 or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. " 00:12:59.87\00:13:02.54 That's the "Establishment clause" 00:13:02.58\00:13:03.91 and the "Free Exercise Clause" 00:13:03.95\00:13:05.28 and so, America's fundamental principle of freedom 00:13:05.31\00:13:08.78 was that the church did not have the right 00:13:08.82\00:13:12.25 to take control of the State... and the State... 00:13:12.29\00:13:15.99 didn't have the right to enforce 00:13:16.02\00:13:17.63 the teachings of the church, 00:13:17.66\00:13:18.99 which was totally contrary to Catholic history in Europe 00:13:19.03\00:13:22.90 so we've got America, we've got Catholicism 00:13:22.93\00:13:25.23 and they are diametrically opposed 00:13:25.27\00:13:28.00 when it comes to their fundamental principles. 00:13:28.04\00:13:30.04 When it came to the founding of America, 00:13:30.07\00:13:32.14 it was a new experiment, 00:13:32.17\00:13:34.34 it had never been seen in the world before, 00:13:34.38\00:13:37.25 to think that Paganism... 00:13:37.28\00:13:39.55 was the State controlling the Church 00:13:39.58\00:13:41.98 Catholicism... Romanism was the Church controlling the State 00:13:42.02\00:13:46.69 and then for our Founding Fathers 00:13:46.72\00:13:49.09 to come to the concept of... 00:13:49.12\00:13:50.76 "that there should be a separation of Church and State" 00:13:50.79\00:13:53.53 that there should be a freedom of worship, 00:13:53.56\00:13:56.90 the individual conscience should be free to worship God 00:13:56.93\00:14:01.17 through the Scriptures without persecution. 00:14:01.20\00:14:04.61 That was a new concept the world had not seen. 00:14:04.64\00:14:07.98 Wow! and we've lost sight of a lot of that 00:14:08.01\00:14:10.61 history... haven't we? 00:14:10.65\00:14:12.11 We were talking about the "Vanishing Protestant" 00:14:12.15\00:14:16.32 today... most people have no idea the history behind 00:14:16.35\00:14:19.95 the freedoms that we enjoy in America today. 00:14:19.99\00:14:23.12 You know, I get to talk with a lot of people 00:14:23.16\00:14:26.13 and through the years of my ministry, Steve, 00:14:26.16\00:14:29.56 I've seen, so much of the concept being lost 00:14:29.60\00:14:32.93 of what does the Bible say, more and more, everywhere, 00:14:32.97\00:14:38.01 it is, "What does Society say or what does the Church say... " 00:14:38.07\00:14:41.84 or what... I mean... the whole point 00:14:41.88\00:14:44.38 of the Protestant Reformation was built on the concept 00:14:44.41\00:14:48.05 that Jesus laid out in Matthew 00:14:48.08\00:14:50.45 that man shall not live by bread alone 00:14:50.49\00:14:52.72 but by every word of God. 00:14:52.75\00:14:55.42 That the whole concept that we can go to the Bible ourselves 00:14:55.46\00:15:00.23 we can read it, 00:15:00.26\00:15:01.60 our conscience can be guided by the Word of God, 00:15:01.63\00:15:04.73 and we can go to Jesus ourselves for the forgiveness of sin. 00:15:04.77\00:15:08.67 The Church should only be organized 00:15:08.70\00:15:11.51 to carry that message to the world. 00:15:11.54\00:15:13.88 Well, here's an article, July 3rd, 2014, 00:15:13.91\00:15:17.25 I've used this in many of my Seminars. 00:15:17.28\00:15:20.52 The tide that came up from christiannews. net 00:15:20.55\00:15:22.82 and the title of the article is: 00:15:22.85\00:15:25.29 "TV Preachers Glowingly Describe Meeting with Pope 00:15:25.32\00:15:27.89 to Tear Down 'Walls of Division' 00:15:27.92\00:15:30.43 between Catholics and Protestants" 00:15:30.46\00:15:32.93 the article came out of Rome, it says, 00:15:32.96\00:15:35.36 "Two Controversial TV Preachers recently met Pope Francis 00:15:35.40\00:15:39.03 in an effort to work toward tearing down 00:15:39.07\00:15:40.77 the walls of division between Catholics and Protestants" 00:15:40.80\00:15:43.17 Kenneth Copeland and James Robison 00:15:43.20\00:15:47.61 very well-known Evangelical Preachers, 00:15:47.64\00:15:51.38 it says in it... they had a meeting 00:15:51.41\00:15:55.12 with the Roman Catholic Pontiff 00:15:55.15\00:15:57.09 late last month, and then... going on 00:15:57.12\00:15:59.75 the article refers to... it says, 00:15:59.79\00:16:02.36 "This meeting was a miracle" Robison told Fort Worth's 00:16:02.39\00:16:06.90 "Star-Telegram" after returning from Rome. 00:16:06.93\00:16:08.80 "This is something that God has done. 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.70 God wants His arms around the world. 00:16:10.73\00:16:12.53 He wants Christians to put His arms 00:16:12.57\00:16:14.90 around the world by working together 00:16:14.94\00:16:17.24 we need to stop fighting one another... " 00:16:17.27\00:16:19.71 Robison said that he enjoyed every moment 00:16:19.74\00:16:21.78 with the leader of the Roman Catholic Church 00:16:21.81\00:16:23.85 saying that he even gave 00:16:23.88\00:16:25.21 Pope Francis a friendly "high five" 00:16:25.25\00:16:27.28 and then the end of the article says that Joel Osteen 00:16:27.32\00:16:31.19 who is also a very well-known Christian Minister in Texas 00:16:31.22\00:16:35.09 that he similarly met with Pope Francis 00:16:35.12\00:16:38.06 at the Vatican in early June. 00:16:38.09\00:16:40.30 Osteen praised the Pope's 00:16:40.33\00:16:43.06 attempts to make the church more inclusive 00:16:43.10\00:16:44.90 and this is just the tip of the iceberg 00:16:44.93\00:16:46.74 there are all kinds of articles that we can report on 00:16:46.77\00:16:48.70 that's showing that the trend today 00:16:48.74\00:16:50.81 is to break down the walls 00:16:50.87\00:16:52.87 between Protestants and Catholics 00:16:52.91\00:16:54.24 they're basically saying that the Reformation is over, 00:16:54.28\00:16:56.34 Protestantism is dead, 00:16:56.38\00:16:58.01 now it's time for us to come together 00:16:58.05\00:16:59.91 to work together to help improve the world, 00:16:59.95\00:17:03.39 and my question is, has Rome really changed 00:17:03.42\00:17:07.72 or is it still the same Rome that... we go back 00:17:07.76\00:17:12.03 to the 1500s, what do you say? 00:17:12.06\00:17:14.10 Well the same abuses of Power and Authority 00:17:14.13\00:17:18.23 that Luther protested against 00:17:18.27\00:17:20.44 and which the Princes of Europe protested against 00:17:20.47\00:17:24.14 still exist today. 00:17:24.17\00:17:26.04 The Roman Church has not given up 00:17:26.07\00:17:28.71 the teachings on doctrines, 00:17:28.74\00:17:30.25 the teachings on forgiveness of sin, 00:17:30.28\00:17:32.08 the teachings on works and faith together for salvation, 00:17:32.11\00:17:36.32 those teachings... all still exist. 00:17:36.35\00:17:38.75 Is Protestantism alive? 00:17:38.82\00:17:40.99 Protestantism will always be alive 00:17:41.02\00:17:43.99 as long as one person says, "The Bible and the Bible alone" 00:17:44.03\00:17:47.56 That's right, I was in Europe... 00:17:47.60\00:17:50.97 in 1983 and I had a chance to visit the Vatican 00:17:51.00\00:17:53.13 and a number of amazing things happened 00:17:53.17\00:17:55.67 when I was inside St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome, 00:17:55.70\00:17:58.41 I tagged along to a tour group 00:17:58.44\00:18:01.34 and there was a Catholic Tour Guide 00:18:01.38\00:18:02.74 that was taking a group of people 00:18:02.78\00:18:04.11 and she showed them different sites 00:18:04.15\00:18:05.48 and she was a very nice woman 00:18:05.51\00:18:07.22 and right in the middle of St. Peter's Cathedral, 00:18:07.25\00:18:09.72 this big church... there was a big statue 00:18:09.75\00:18:11.39 of, what they say, is Peter... 00:18:11.42\00:18:14.26 and the toes of that statue were not there 00:18:14.29\00:18:17.19 and I was told that they had been kissed off 00:18:17.23\00:18:20.50 by different people three different times 00:18:20.53\00:18:23.57 and the Guide told me, privately, she said, 00:18:23.60\00:18:26.43 "That statue really isn't Peter... it's Jupiter, 00:18:26.47\00:18:29.77 we brought it over from the Greek Pantheon 00:18:29.80\00:18:33.34 and it's kind of an inside... 00:18:33.38\00:18:35.54 'insider information' that that's really not Peter at all" 00:18:35.58\00:18:39.25 and during that same trip I went over to the same church 00:18:39.28\00:18:42.92 where Luther went up Pilot's Staircase 00:18:42.98\00:18:45.49 and I was there, and I went up to the top 00:18:45.55\00:18:48.02 and I looked down at the stairs 00:18:48.09\00:18:50.09 and honestly I still remember it as clear as day 00:18:50.13\00:18:52.49 there were these old ladies that were climbing up those stairs 00:18:52.53\00:18:57.77 on their knees, and I looked at their faces 00:18:57.83\00:19:00.24 and they were just... they were grimacing 00:19:00.27\00:19:02.67 as they put knee... in front of knee 00:19:02.70\00:19:04.94 and I looked at them from the top of the stairs 00:19:04.97\00:19:07.08 and I thought, "You don't need to be doing this 00:19:07.11\00:19:09.78 you don't need to try to earn the favor of God 00:19:09.81\00:19:12.41 by climbing upstairs on your knees 00:19:12.45\00:19:14.25 that Jesus loves you, you can come right to Him" 00:19:14.28\00:19:17.62 but that is not taught in the Roman Church. 00:19:17.65\00:19:21.06 Such things like confession to Priests, 00:19:21.09\00:19:24.46 praying to Mary and the Saints, purgatory, penance, indulgences, 00:19:24.49\00:19:31.60 calling a man, "The Holy Father" 00:19:31.63\00:19:35.67 which is the phrase that is used for the Pope, 00:19:35.70\00:19:39.07 Jesus prayed to the Holy Father in John chapter 17 verse 11, 00:19:39.11\00:19:44.38 He said, "Holy Father" and it was God 00:19:44.41\00:19:46.88 no man deserves that title. 00:19:46.92\00:19:49.82 Those are the things that the Protestant Reformers 00:19:49.85\00:19:53.22 were all protesting against, and as you're saying, 00:19:53.25\00:19:56.59 they're still here today. 00:19:56.62\00:19:57.96 That's right... they're still here today 00:19:57.99\00:19:59.49 so the idea that the reformation really is over 00:19:59.53\00:20:02.40 and that the old issues are behind us 00:20:02.43\00:20:05.83 Brother Coridan... Dean... 00:20:05.90\00:20:09.74 I am convinced that Protestantism 00:20:09.77\00:20:12.74 that Christianity as a whole... 00:20:12.77\00:20:15.24 when comes to this issue... is blind. 00:20:15.31\00:20:17.65 They've lost sight of history, 00:20:17.68\00:20:20.88 they don't understand what the Bible says, 00:20:20.92\00:20:22.98 they don't know what they're dealing with, 00:20:23.02\00:20:25.15 and there's just no question in my mind 00:20:25.19\00:20:27.29 that the issues are the same no matter what we hear, 00:20:27.32\00:20:31.63 no matter what people say, 00:20:31.66\00:20:33.09 just look at the facts, 00:20:33.13\00:20:34.46 the facts are: Rome is still Rome 00:20:34.50\00:20:36.83 Rome hasn't changed, 00:20:36.87\00:20:38.20 what has changed is... 00:20:38.23\00:20:40.07 Protestantism... That's right... 00:20:40.10\00:20:41.60 Protestantism has strayed from the Word of God, 00:20:41.64\00:20:43.97 they no longer know history 00:20:44.01\00:20:45.57 and they've re-interpreted the prophecies 00:20:45.61\00:20:48.51 so they're expecting a "beast" being a man 00:20:48.54\00:20:51.41 to come in the future after the "Rapture. " 00:20:51.45\00:20:53.78 I've done a whole lot of study on this, 00:20:53.82\00:20:55.85 this is probably our best-selling book 00:20:55.88\00:20:57.85 for White Horse Media, it's called "End Time Delusions" 00:20:57.89\00:21:00.26 that deals with the whole history of the Reformation 00:21:00.29\00:21:02.59 and it deals with the switch for what needs to be called... 00:21:02.62\00:21:05.86 or is still called, "Historicism" 00:21:05.89\00:21:07.80 that understands prophecy in the light of history 00:21:07.83\00:21:10.23 going down through the dark ages, 00:21:10.27\00:21:11.60 coming down to today, 00:21:11.63\00:21:12.97 which applied the "beast prophecy" 00:21:13.00\00:21:14.54 to the Papal Power, that has been replaced 00:21:14.60\00:21:16.87 by an entirely new System which you can actually trace... 00:21:16.91\00:21:20.71 back to the Jesuits in the Counter-Reformation 00:21:20.74\00:21:24.11 that has really taken the eyes of humanity 00:21:24.15\00:21:27.38 and of Christians off of the Papal Power 00:21:27.42\00:21:30.59 so they're looking in the future 00:21:30.62\00:21:32.55 to a future Antichrist who is supposed to come 00:21:32.62\00:21:34.96 after the Rapture and so they don't see 00:21:34.99\00:21:37.93 what's happening right now right in front of their eyes. 00:21:37.96\00:21:41.00 Well one of the serious shifts that has taken place is 00:21:41.03\00:21:44.03 the belief and the teaching that America 00:21:44.07\00:21:49.30 or the political system of America 00:21:49.34\00:21:52.77 granted religious freedom, 00:21:52.81\00:21:54.78 when in reality... it was the Protestant Reformation 00:21:54.84\00:21:58.35 that gave America the idea of Religious Freedom 00:21:58.38\00:22:02.38 and if the Protestant Reformation dies, 00:22:02.42\00:22:05.35 freedom in America will die too, 00:22:05.39\00:22:07.76 freedom is based on the concept that we can go to God alone, 00:22:07.79\00:22:12.53 that the conscience is free to say, "Yes" and "no" 00:22:12.56\00:22:15.60 to God without interference from State or Church, 00:22:15.63\00:22:19.20 if we lose that... we will lose freedom in America. 00:22:19.23\00:22:22.80 That's right... that's right... humanity has basic human rights 00:22:22.84\00:22:25.27 given by the Creator. 00:22:25.31\00:22:26.64 That's exactly right and our Constitution says that. 00:22:26.68\00:22:29.44 That's right... in Revelation 13 it talks about 00:22:29.48\00:22:32.58 the second beast forming an image of the first beast 00:22:32.61\00:22:35.75 that what happened in Europe 00:22:35.78\00:22:37.12 is going to be duplicated in America 00:22:37.15\00:22:38.65 and I thought a lot about 00:22:38.69\00:22:40.26 what happened after the Twin Towers came down 00:22:40.29\00:22:42.79 and the Bush Administration, 00:22:42.82\00:22:44.89 in their efforts to try to fight terrorism, 00:22:44.93\00:22:48.10 there were things that have developed where... 00:22:48.13\00:22:51.23 people can now... as potential suspects of terrorism 00:22:51.27\00:22:56.07 they can be whisked away to secret tribunals 00:22:56.10\00:22:58.77 they can be tried without the benefit of the Jury 00:22:58.81\00:23:02.68 they can be... 00:23:02.71\00:23:04.05 there are certain torture techniques 00:23:04.08\00:23:06.55 that can be used to extract information from terrorists, 00:23:06.58\00:23:09.35 in the name of protecting the American people, 00:23:09.38\00:23:11.35 and I'm all for protecting the American people, 00:23:11.39\00:23:13.29 but when you look at the developments 00:23:13.36\00:23:15.02 of how we're dealing with suspected terrorism, 00:23:15.09\00:23:17.93 and the surveillances that are going on, 00:23:17.96\00:23:19.83 that are denying basic rights, 00:23:19.86\00:23:21.36 what we're seeing is a development 00:23:21.40\00:23:23.90 toward the Inquisition 00:23:23.93\00:23:25.47 and we're seeing the development of an image 00:23:25.53\00:23:28.87 in America of what happened in Europe... 00:23:28.90\00:23:32.17 it just fits perfectly. 00:23:32.24\00:23:33.58 Well, you only have a couple of choices, 00:23:33.64\00:23:36.14 Jesus said, "You shall know the truth 00:23:36.18\00:23:38.85 and the truth shall make you free. " 00:23:38.91\00:23:41.48 The further we separate ourselves from the truth 00:23:41.52\00:23:45.39 of the Word of God, 00:23:45.42\00:23:46.76 the less freedoms we're going to enjoy 00:23:46.79\00:23:49.82 and the more Society turns from the Word of God, 00:23:49.86\00:23:53.53 not holding on to what God has given us 00:23:53.56\00:23:56.26 as a heritage, the more we're going to 00:23:56.30\00:23:58.93 lose the freedoms that the Word of God produces. 00:23:58.97\00:24:00.80 That's right, and the Seventh-day Adventists, 00:24:00.84\00:24:03.71 we still consider ourselves Protestants 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.74 now that doesn't mean that we hate anybody, 00:24:06.78\00:24:09.68 I've got a good friend of mine 00:24:09.71\00:24:13.08 who is a Catholic Talk Show Host on the East Coast 00:24:13.11\00:24:15.18 and I've been on the air with him many, many times, 00:24:15.22\00:24:18.25 and it's time for me to communicate with him 00:24:18.29\00:24:21.82 about these issues 00:24:21.86\00:24:23.19 because these issues are right in front of us, 00:24:23.22\00:24:25.53 and I believe that God loves Protestants, Catholics, Jews, 00:24:25.56\00:24:28.96 Muslims, Wiccans, Republicans, Democrats, 00:24:29.00\00:24:32.20 all of us, Jesus died for us all, 00:24:32.23\00:24:34.47 but the Scripture is the Scripture, 00:24:34.50\00:24:36.67 the Bible is the Bible the truth is the truth, 00:24:36.71\00:24:38.17 and prophecy... the sure word of prophecy 00:24:38.21\00:24:40.58 is the sure word of prophecy, 00:24:40.61\00:24:41.94 and we're living in the final days of earth's history 00:24:41.98\00:24:44.01 and we need to know what's going on 00:24:44.05\00:24:45.81 and what the prophecy says, and what the future holds 00:24:45.85\00:24:48.35 for America and for the world. 00:24:48.38\00:24:49.72 Historically, Protestantism has always stood 00:24:49.75\00:24:53.72 faith alone, grace alone, Scripture alone, 00:24:53.76\00:24:57.89 if we move away from any of those three, 00:24:57.93\00:25:01.73 we cease to be a Protestant. 00:25:01.76\00:25:04.03 That's right and it's... it's becoming obvious 00:25:04.07\00:25:08.80 to those of us that are studying 00:25:08.84\00:25:10.94 that Revelation 13 is being fulfilled 00:25:10.97\00:25:14.61 right in front of our eyes, 00:25:14.64\00:25:16.08 I want to... just as we're... 00:25:16.11\00:25:17.45 we only have a couple of minutes left, 00:25:17.48\00:25:18.81 in Revelation chapter 13, the Bible talks about the beast, 00:25:18.85\00:25:23.32 Revelation 13 verse 7 says, "Authority was given him 00:25:23.35\00:25:27.26 over every tribe, tongue, and nation" 00:25:27.29\00:25:29.92 verse 8 says, "all who dwell upon the earth 00:25:29.96\00:25:32.56 shall worship him 00:25:32.59\00:25:34.26 whose names have not been written in the book of life, 00:25:34.30\00:25:37.73 of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. " 00:25:37.77\00:25:41.10 So, really the issue in prophecy is the lamb versus the beast. 00:25:41.14\00:25:45.67 That's right... 00:25:45.71\00:25:47.04 And the beast claims to be a follower of God, 00:25:47.08\00:25:50.38 but all of its massive traditions lead away 00:25:50.41\00:25:53.11 from simple faith in Jesus Christ alone, 00:25:53.15\00:25:55.82 and from the Bible, as the Word of God, 00:25:55.85\00:25:58.39 as our only guide, I want to close with a statement 00:25:58.42\00:26:02.02 from Martin Luther 00:26:02.06\00:26:03.66 at the height of the Protestant Reformation 00:26:03.69\00:26:06.03 he was called in April 1521 before a vast assembly 00:26:06.06\00:26:10.03 Charles the Fifth was the Emperor, 00:26:10.07\00:26:12.53 there was a vast assembly of Catholic Theologians 00:26:12.57\00:26:15.44 and people and Princes of Germany 00:26:15.47\00:26:18.54 and Luther was then called to answer for his faith 00:26:18.57\00:26:21.58 and to recant... and to give up his teachings 00:26:21.61\00:26:24.95 and he said this, he said... 00:26:25.01\00:26:26.38 "My conscience is captive to the Word of God 00:26:26.41\00:26:28.55 I cannot and I will not recant... 00:26:28.58\00:26:31.59 because it is neither safe 00:26:31.62\00:26:33.49 nor wise to act against conscience, 00:26:33.52\00:26:36.96 here I stand... I can do no other... 00:26:37.03\00:26:40.43 so help me God. " 00:26:40.46\00:26:43.67 Amen... And our conviction is... 00:26:43.70\00:26:45.57 that it is time to continue the Reformation 00:26:45.63\00:26:47.84 it's time to stand up for Jesus, 00:26:47.87\00:26:49.67 for the Bible and for the truth. 00:26:49.70\00:26:51.44 It's time to uphold the great Protestant truths 00:26:51.47\00:26:54.84 that moved the world in the time of the 1500s 00:26:54.88\00:26:58.15 and as we near the closing of time 00:26:58.21\00:27:00.02 the last prophecies are about to be fulfilled 00:27:00.05\00:27:02.88 God wants His people to stand for Jesus, 00:27:02.92\00:27:05.62 to stand for the Bible, to stand for the truth, 00:27:05.65\00:27:08.32 no matter what the cost, we may be brought before kings, 00:27:08.36\00:27:11.99 and we'll have to say, "By the grace of God, 00:27:12.06\00:27:14.46 I stand by the Bible, here I stand, 00:27:14.50\00:27:17.20 so help me God. Amen. " 00:27:17.23\00:27:19.67 Amen...
