after the resurrection of Jesus,

Jesus met with His disciples
and He gave them a Bible Study

the Scripture says that,

So, Jesus... in His

post-resurrection
appearance to His disciples...

from the prophets and
from all the Scriptures

to understand the Scriptures

prophets, and the Psalms...

Jesus is the great
center of the whole Bible.

Going all the way back
to the book of Genesis,

the first book of the Bible,

let's talk about
the word, "Israel. "

The very first time the
word "Israel" is ever used

is in Genesis
chapter 32 verse 28.

The great British Statesman,
Winston Churchill, once said,

"The farther backward we look,
00:03:50.46\00:03:52.59
the farther
forward we can see. "

And it's
certainly true in Genesis

that if we go back to Genesis
and try to really understand

what it's saying,

understand the future

issues in the days ahead.

Genesis chapter
32 verses 24 to 28,

describes a wrestling
match between a man named Jacob

with an angel,

verse 24 says:

And then the man said,
this was an angel of God...

the man said, 'Let me go,
for the day is breaking. '
00:04:43.21\00:04:46.95
and Jacob said, 'I will not let
you go except you bless me. '
00:04:46.98\00:04:52.15
And the man said to
Jacob, 'What is your name?'

And he said to Him,
'My name is Jacob. '"

Now, the name Jacob actually
means deceiver or crook.

And Jacob had been a deceiver,

he had deceived
his father, Isaac,

he had pretended to be Esau,

and that got him
into a lot of trouble,

he had to leave his family,
and go spend years with Laban,

and then he got
married, he had two wives now

and lots and lots of children

and they were on their way back

he got word that Esau was
coming to meet him with 400 men

and there was
probably a battle ahead of him

and Esau was angry

and he was probably
going to try to kill him,
00:05:27.56\00:05:29.69
so Jacob realized
that it was his own sin

that had gotten
himself into this mess,

that's why Esau
was so upset with him

and so that night
under the stars he prayed

and then... a man
wrestled with him,

he thought the
man was probably Esau

but it wasn't, it
was God's messenger,

God's holy messenger...

and they wrestled all night

and finally the
messenger touched Jacob's thigh,

knocked it out of joint

and that put
Jacob down on his knees

as a broken man,

needing all the help
that God could give him

and he said, "Let me go,"

and then Jacob said,
"No, I will not let you go

until you bless me,
you've got to bless me

and then he said,
"What's your name?"

And Jacob acknowledged,
"My name is Jacob...

I'm the deceiver, I'm the crook"

and that basically was
Jacob's acknowledgement

of himself and of his
sin and then as a broken man,

down on his knees,
realizing that his own life

and his family's life
was at stake from Esau

Jacob held on for dear life

and then the
messenger looked at him

and he said, something
amazing, he said in verse 28

God changed Jacob's name
because he was now a humbled man

he was a broken man,
he was a trusting man,

he was a repentant man,
and God changed his name

and gave him a new name
and the new name was "Israel. "

And the word "Israel"
literally means: Prince of God,

and so the messenger said,

"You're name is, now,
Israel for as a prince

you have had power with God

and with man and
have prevailed. "

Now, here's my point, it's
very important to recognize

that the very first time
00:07:19.10\00:07:20.44
the word "Israel"
is used in the Bible,
00:07:20.47\00:07:22.24
it was a deeply spiritual
name given by a messenger of God
00:07:22.27\00:07:25.97
to a broken man
00:07:26.01\00:07:27.34
and who was now trusting
the Lord with his whole heart
00:07:27.38\00:07:29.11
and it meant that he
was now a "Prince of God. "
00:07:29.14\00:07:33.62
He was now fully God's
man who was on God's side
00:07:33.65\00:07:38.09
and whose life had been changed.
00:07:38.12\00:07:40.06
So the word "Israel... "
first time in the Bible...

Genesis 32:28 right

the first time it
applied... not to a people

but to one particular person...

to Jacob whose
name was now Israel.

Now, when you go on
in Biblical history,

we discover
that, as I mentioned,

Jacob had kids,
he had a lot of kids

and these became known as

"the children of
Israel" his new name.

When you go to Exodus chapter 1,
farther on in Biblical history

it talks about the names
of the children of Israel

who were the children of
Jacob, who came into Egypt
00:08:18.96\00:08:22.66
and it lists their names
and then it says in verse 5

that Joseph was
already in Egypt.
00:08:26.43\00:08:28.10
Now, remember this,
Joseph is mentioned here.

Joseph was the
man who had dreams

that were fulfilled in
Egypt that God gave him,

back to that point.

So, Israel and his
children go to Egypt

and they begin to multiply

and they eventually run
into trouble with Pharaoh

and God raises up
Moses, sends him to Pharaoh,
00:08:45.42\00:08:48.26
with a message and in
Exodus 4:22 in the name of God,

Moses addresses
Pharaoh and he says,

in verse 22, "Thus
shall you say to Pharaoh,"
00:09:00.67\00:09:03.77
God said to Moses,
"Thus says the Lord:

'Israel is my son, even my
firstborn and I say to you:

Let my son go, that he may
serve me in the wilderness. '"

Now, here, through
Moses, God is telling Pharaoh,

"Israel is his son. "

So, first of all
Israel was one man

but when they got
into Egypt and multiplied,

then God looked
at the whole nation

and He called them Israel.

So you've got Israel as a
man, and Israel as a nation

and also, it's significant that
God called Israel His "Son. "

and we'll draw some parallels

the life of Jesus.

In Psalm 80 verse 8,

talking about the Exodus,

coming out of Egypt,

David wrote in
his prayer, he said,

Israel out of Egypt,

David referred to Israel

so, Israel was God's

God refers to Israel,

So Israel is
called "God's servant"

Israel was God's

called my son out of Egypt. "

God brought His son, Israel,

Jesus' earthly dad...
