00:01:37.14\00:01:38.69 Another one that's going to come out later in the year 00:01:38.72\00:01:41.99 about probably April or May, you can start 00:01:42.02\00:01:44.60 talking about preordering it. 00:01:44.63\00:01:46.06 But these books I have read personally and they also shape 00:01:46.09\00:01:49.71 the way I treat cardiology because I realize 00:01:49.74\00:01:52.71 that all disease, much of disease 00:01:52.74\00:01:54.85 we have comes from the brain. 00:01:54.88\00:01:56.75 And unfortunately when a brain is depressed, 00:01:56.78\00:01:59.18 it doesn't feel good, it effects the entire body, 00:01:59.21\00:02:02.22 raises a chance of infection, raises a chance 00:02:02.25\00:02:05.50 of cardiovascular disease, raises a chance of accidents 00:02:05.53\00:02:09.10 and miss days at worst. 00:02:09.13\00:02:10.50 It hurts our relationships with each other. 00:02:10.53\00:02:13.06 It also hurts our relationship with God. 00:02:13.09\00:02:15.80 So this is a program you definitely 00:02:15.83\00:02:17.91 want to stay tuned on. 00:02:17.94\00:02:19.25 Our lines are open right now. 00:02:19.28\00:02:21.07 So we want you to give us a call 855-644-3278. 00:02:21.10\00:02:25.83 You can also, if you don't 00:02:25.86\00:02:27.69 want to talk on air, you can leave your questions 00:02:27.72\00:02:30.00 with one of our capable call centre people. 00:02:30.03\00:02:32.14 You can also join us on facebook, 00:02:32.17\00:02:34.96 be part of the discussion there or become 00:02:34.99\00:02:36.89 one of our facebook friends. 00:02:36.92\00:02:38.39 Dr. Tim Jennings has so graciously agreed to be with us 00:02:38.42\00:02:41.79 and if you stay with us, you gonna get to sharing 00:02:41.82\00:02:44.19 his expertise after we go to this short break. 00:02:44.22\00:02:46.72 Stay with us. 00:02:46.75\00:02:50.13 The Heart of Health Live will return in just a moment. 00:02:51.25\00:02:53.94 The Heart of Health Live is brought to you 00:02:58.89\00:03:00.77 by Heartwise Ministries. 00:03:00.80\00:03:03.25 Have you ever heard things 00:03:36.11\00:03:37.27 about God that didn't make sense? Welcome back. 00:05:41.29\00:05:44.60 If you just joined us, we are talking about depression 00:05:44.63\00:05:47.42 and we are so glad that Dr. Tim Jennings has joined us. 00:05:47.45\00:05:50.52 Dr. Jennings, thanks for giving us your time. 00:05:50.55\00:05:53.00 Thanks for having me. 00:05:53.03\00:05:54.15 Listen, tell us what got you interested 00:05:54.18\00:05:56.84 in the field of psychiatry? 00:05:56.87\00:05:58.12 So many branches of medicine you could have gone into. 00:05:58.15\00:06:00.67 You know, when I decided to med-school, 00:06:00.70\00:06:03.37 my plan was to be a cardiologist. 00:06:03.40\00:06:04.82 Okay. Yeah, yeah, 00:06:04.85\00:06:06.19 but then in med-school, 00:06:06.22\00:06:07.55 I obviously went to the various rotations 00:06:07.58\00:06:09.46 and when I went to the rotation for psychiatry, 00:06:09.49\00:06:13.08 I discovered that the brain is actually 00:06:13.11\00:06:14.63 the most complex organ in our body. 00:06:14.66\00:06:16.92 You know since I was drawn to the, 00:06:16.95\00:06:18.46 the complexity of the brain and the mind 00:06:18.49\00:06:20.09 and that's why I went into that field. 00:06:20.12\00:06:23.10 So, to become a psychiatrist, you have to become 00:06:23.13\00:06:25.85 a medical doctor first? MD, yeah. 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.67 And you learn about all the fields in medicine? 00:06:27.70\00:06:29.45 Absolutely. Okay, and then 00:06:29.48\00:06:30.61 what do you do beyond that? 00:06:30.64\00:06:31.67 And then we have a four year residency in psychiatry 00:06:31.70\00:06:34.02 that has a heavy emphasis on neurology. 00:06:34.05\00:06:36.07 One third of psychiatrist, the board certification 00:06:36.10\00:06:39.03 exams is actually neurology. 00:06:39.06\00:06:40.57 So there is a really heavy emphasis on understanding 00:06:40.60\00:06:42.30 the brain and neuroscience in order to be a psychiatrist. 00:06:42.33\00:06:45.17 Okay, and then after you finished that, 00:06:45.20\00:06:47.20 I guess you have been practicing for a while? 00:06:47.23\00:06:48.93 I have been practicing for over 20 years now. 00:06:48.96\00:06:51.16 Now, what got you interested in writing books? 00:06:51.19\00:06:54.64 Well, I got interest in writing books was patients 00:06:54.67\00:06:57.32 that would come to and have problems, 00:06:57.35\00:06:59.61 and so many misunderstandings and so few resources out 00:06:59.64\00:07:02.65 there that actually put a balance in what I really 00:07:02.68\00:07:05.40 have a passion for is integrating science 00:07:05.43\00:07:08.13 and scripture, integrating what I understand how God 00:07:08.16\00:07:12.08 designed life to operate with the evidences 00:07:12.11\00:07:14.81 that we have before us in the scientific world 00:07:14.84\00:07:17.58 and bringing those two together in a way that people 00:07:17.61\00:07:20.17 can understand it in a right functioning to their life. 00:07:20.20\00:07:22.36 Wow, now if you look at society now, 00:07:22.39\00:07:25.34 I think our mental health is as bad as ever been 00:07:25.37\00:07:28.38 in the history of the earth, would you agree? 00:07:28.41\00:07:30.01 I wouldn't disagree, I would tell you, 00:07:30.04\00:07:32.44 I've never thought of that like that thorough the whole history. 00:07:32.47\00:07:34.27 I mean, you think about it, it's a major medical problem 00:07:34.30\00:07:38.17 and it's like we have to deal with it. 00:07:38.20\00:07:40.05 Just give us since we gonna focus on some depression. 00:07:40.08\00:07:43.09 Just tell me about depression, let our readers know, 00:07:43.12\00:07:45.54 give us a sort of brief overview. 00:07:45.57\00:07:47.15 You know, when somebody is depress, 00:07:47.18\00:07:48.52 it's actually a physical illness of brain and body. 00:07:48.55\00:07:51.60 The part of the brain that we reason and think right here, 00:07:51.63\00:07:55.59 behind our forehead, this part of the brain 00:07:55.62\00:07:57.65 it organizes plans and it also modulates mood is depressed 00:07:57.68\00:08:01.68 or suppressed, it's not active as normal 00:08:01.71\00:08:04.14 when someone is depressed. 00:08:04.17\00:08:05.83 So the person who is depressed has trouble thinking clearly, 00:08:05.86\00:08:08.50 concentrating problem solving, part of the brain right above 00:08:08.53\00:08:11.40 the orbit of your eye is the part of the brain 00:08:11.43\00:08:13.51 that gives you a conviction of wrong doing, 00:08:13.54\00:08:15.73 redirects from inappropriate behavior. 00:08:15.76\00:08:18.19 And so if you were at church this weekend 00:08:18.22\00:08:20.28 and you try to stand up and take your clothes off 00:08:20.31\00:08:22.55 in front of everyone, okay. 00:08:22.58\00:08:23.98 This part of the brain would start fighting like crazy 00:08:24.01\00:08:26.09 and you get really uncomfortable and stressed and feel because 00:08:26.12\00:08:28.35 this part of the brain is trying to redirect 00:08:28.38\00:08:29.96 you to get you to stop this inappropriate behavior. 00:08:29.99\00:08:32.03 When someone is depressed, this part of brain 00:08:32.06\00:08:33.78 is actually over active. 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.07 So they get a sense of it of guilt, 00:08:35.10\00:08:36.82 the sense of inadequacy, the sense of everything 00:08:36.85\00:08:38.70 they do is not good enough or not right. 00:08:38.73\00:08:40.89 A part of the brain behind the bridge of the nose 00:08:40.92\00:08:42.94 about few inches back it is called 00:08:42.97\00:08:44.42 anterior cingulate cortex., 00:08:44.45\00:08:45.86 this part of the brain where it makes empathy, 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.76 compassion, connected this with all the people 00:08:47.79\00:08:50.17 and it's also the place you make decisions. 00:08:50.20\00:08:52.08 And this part of the brain when someone is depressed 00:08:52.11\00:08:53.99 is under active, so people feel emotionally disconnected 00:08:54.02\00:08:57.72 and they have difficult time making decisions. 00:08:57.75\00:08:59.58 The part of the brain where you experience fear called 00:08:59.61\00:09:01.86 the amygdala is overactive in depression, 00:09:01.89\00:09:04.27 so people also have the sense of apprehension and dread, 00:09:04.30\00:09:06.76 worry, anxiety and then the part of the brain 00:09:06.79\00:09:09.30 which brings pleasure, all pleasure 00:09:09.33\00:09:11.15 called the nucleus accumbens whether it's that runner's high, 00:09:11.18\00:09:13.32 whether it's your favorite food, 00:09:13.35\00:09:14.51 whether it's just fell in love, all pleasure. 00:09:14.54\00:09:16.78 When someone is depressed, 00:09:16.81\00:09:18.14 this part of the brain is not reacting. 00:09:18.17\00:09:19.55 So when people are depressed, there is this consolation 00:09:19.58\00:09:21.72 of symptoms based on the brain circuitry is out of balance, 00:09:21.75\00:09:24.33 where they have trouble concentrating, 00:09:24.36\00:09:26.59 focusing, they have trouble with decision making, 00:09:26.62\00:09:28.39 they have emotional disconnect, they feel guilty and inadequate 00:09:28.42\00:09:31.81 in everything they do, they have a sense of dread 00:09:31.84\00:09:33.50 and worry and apprehension. 00:09:33.53\00:09:34.76 And then when things actually go good in their life, 00:09:34.79\00:09:37.48 there is no joy in life anymore. 00:09:37.51\00:09:39.47 Now, when the brain circuit you have to balance like this, 00:09:39.50\00:09:42.25 the fear circuitry is overactive and peripherally 00:09:42.28\00:09:45.59 what does that in your body is it actually activates 00:09:45.62\00:09:47.86 your immune system causing inflammatory cascade. 00:09:47.89\00:09:51.04 This is devastating to the body, 00:09:51.07\00:09:52.89 the elevated inflammatory cascade 00:09:52.92\00:09:55.39 results in insulin resistance, 00:09:55.42\00:09:57.90 in the phase of high stress and high stress causes 00:09:57.93\00:10:00.71 the stress hormones, glucocorticoids 00:10:00.74\00:10:02.71 to release which means it's pumping glucose 00:10:02.74\00:10:04.78 into your bloodstream for the fighter flight stress 00:10:04.81\00:10:06.77 response but now we are having inflammatory cascade 00:10:06.80\00:10:09.58 causing insulin resistance, so we are not able to use 00:10:09.61\00:10:11.97 that glucose as well, so there is chronic, 00:10:12.00\00:10:14.05 there is chronic imbalance it happens with depression 00:10:14.08\00:10:16.65 from the brain circuits cause increasing risk 00:10:16.68\00:10:19.26 as you mentioned in your opening of cardiovascular disease, 00:10:19.29\00:10:21.67 obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, stroke, 00:10:21.70\00:10:26.40 even bone density problems go--we have problem 00:10:26.43\00:10:29.54 with osteopenia, osteoporosis for people who are depressed. 00:10:29.57\00:10:33.13 Now, this inflammatory cascade one final steps 00:10:33.16\00:10:35.08 is a three way process here. 00:10:35.11\00:10:36.76 Brain circuit are out of balance 00:10:36.79\00:10:37.96 causing inflammatory cascade cause 00:10:37.99\00:10:39.53 physiological health problem, that inflammatory cascade 00:10:39.56\00:10:42.06 now reacts back upon the brain causing failure or damage. 00:10:42.09\00:10:45.61 Cells in the brain begin to be damaged, 00:10:45.64\00:10:47.31 I'm walking through all the technical 00:10:47.34\00:10:48.42 half way through that happens. 00:10:48.45\00:10:49.75 We actually lose brain volume, puts the brain for shrinking. 00:10:49.78\00:10:52.79 Now, I brought us a functional scan to show our 00:10:52.82\00:10:55.50 audience and on the left we have a brain 00:10:55.53\00:10:58.53 that is not depressed and on the right here 00:10:58.56\00:11:00.52 we have a brain that's depressed. 00:11:00.55\00:11:02.02 And what we're actually seeing here is the bright areas 00:11:02.05\00:11:04.22 are cells that are using glucose, they are firing, 00:11:04.25\00:11:06.47 they are talking to each other, they are active 00:11:06.50\00:11:08.05 and the cells that are dark, that are not doing. 00:11:08.08\00:11:10.54 These are not dead cells, it's not a stroke here. 00:11:10.57\00:11:12.43 These cells are just dormant. They are not just active. 00:11:12.46\00:11:14.97 They are kind of just centering not doing much 00:11:15.00\00:11:17.01 and that's what happening in the brain 00:11:17.04\00:11:18.59 of people who are depressed. 00:11:18.62\00:11:20.04 Wow, there are lot of stuff going on, 00:11:20.07\00:11:23.45 so the diagnosis of depression. 00:11:23.48\00:11:25.66 You mentioned some of the symptoms. 00:11:25.69\00:11:26.92 Is you're just talking to people, 00:11:26.95\00:11:29.29 you tell if they have these brain or you have 00:11:29.32\00:11:30.87 to scan everybody? 00:11:30.90\00:11:32.05 You can do, you actually certainly could do a scan 00:11:32.08\00:11:34.02 but there is no need to do a scan 00:11:34.05\00:11:35.44 if you have an experienced healthcare provider 00:11:35.47\00:11:37.73 who knows what they are looking for. 00:11:37.76\00:11:39.05 But you know, somebody can come in and look like 00:11:39.08\00:11:40.70 they are depressed and not actually be depressed 00:11:40.73\00:11:42.39 and that's why it does take somebody who has some clinical 00:11:42.42\00:11:44.75 experience to know how to differentiate between 00:11:44.78\00:11:47.30 somebody who actually has depression 00:11:47.33\00:11:48.86 and somebody who doesn't. 00:11:48.89\00:11:50.02 Now what's interesting is just when somebody 00:11:50.05\00:11:53.30 has depression, we have this physiological process 00:11:53.33\00:11:56.23 going on that still doesn't tell us why they have depression 00:11:56.26\00:11:59.27 and that's the critical thing to wellness. 00:11:59.30\00:12:01.20 To get somebody well, it's not just enough to say okay, 00:12:01.23\00:12:04.23 you got depression, you have to then start 00:12:04.26\00:12:06.33 asking those critical questions and this particular person 00:12:06.36\00:12:09.06 who sits in my office right now. 00:12:09.09\00:12:10.40 What's going on in their life, their brain circuits, 00:12:10.43\00:12:13.62 in their body inflammatory cascade is out 00:12:13.65\00:12:16.89 that are actually causing depression. 00:12:16.92\00:12:18.30 So if you remember have those circuits right in balance 00:12:18.33\00:12:20.31 I've just described anything going on in life 00:12:20.34\00:12:23.04 that will imbalance the circuits that way. 00:12:23.07\00:12:25.02 Decrease, there's a lot of prefrontal cortex up 00:12:25.05\00:12:27.87 regulate your circuitry for instance. 00:12:27.90\00:12:29.45 Anything it does that will push people under depression 00:12:29.48\00:12:31.90 or anything that causes higher inflammation in the body 00:12:31.93\00:12:35.35 will push people towards depression. 00:12:35.38\00:12:37.68 And so we have multiple different avenues 00:12:37.71\00:12:39.63 that we can, we can push people in the direction 00:12:39.66\00:12:42.13 of depression and so when someone is depressed, 00:12:42.16\00:12:43.70 we have to look at them as a total package and say, 00:12:43.73\00:12:45.91 okay, what is going wrong where and then begin 00:12:45.94\00:12:48.60 a whole treatment plan to get their body 00:12:48.63\00:12:51.31 and their brain back in balance. 00:12:51.34\00:12:52.66 Right, so depression might just be something physical. 00:12:52.69\00:12:55.70 Depression is something physical. 00:12:55.73\00:12:56.81 Yeah, it's something physical but something could trigger 00:12:56.84\00:12:58.71 you know like a disease could make depression come on. 00:12:58.74\00:13:01.85 One of the major factors of depression is the worsening 00:13:01.88\00:13:05.12 physical health problems you have. 00:13:05.15\00:13:06.36 Every organ system of your body has its primary purpose 00:13:06.39\00:13:10.56 to serve your brain. Right. 00:13:10.60\00:13:12.04 Okay. So the more physical illness you have, 00:13:12.07\00:13:14.34 the less effective your body can keep your brain healthy, 00:13:14.37\00:13:16.76 so the more you're pushed towards 00:13:16.79\00:13:18.23 brain dysfunction and depression. 00:13:18.26\00:13:19.88 So when you think a person might have this, 00:13:19.91\00:13:21.60 one of the first things I guess you would 00:13:21.63\00:13:23.43 do is the complete physical and make sure 00:13:23.46\00:13:25.05 that's not contributing factors. 00:13:25.08\00:13:26.81 Actually, certainly we want them to have 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.75 a complete physical exam, get lab work done, 00:13:28.78\00:13:30.82 hypothyroidism, certain sleep disorders are contributing 00:13:30.85\00:13:33.53 factors to depression. 00:13:33.56\00:13:35.04 Lot of these things are involved. 00:13:35.07\00:13:36.44 So once you look at all that and say, 00:13:36.47\00:13:38.42 listen I corrected this and I corrected that. 00:13:38.45\00:13:41.22 We are going to talk a little bit about this specific 00:13:41.26\00:13:43.19 as we go on today about how you address 00:13:43.22\00:13:45.76 this complex medical problem. 00:13:45.79\00:13:47.76 So depression is pretty - now you got the brain there, 00:13:47.79\00:13:50.80 you know, which is the part that does 00:13:50.83\00:13:52.68 the thinking for those who don't. 00:13:52.71\00:13:54.08 This, the part of the brain here in the front, 00:13:54.11\00:13:56.25 this is the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. 00:13:56.28\00:13:58.11 This is the part where we reason and think. 00:13:58.14\00:13:59.65 When someone is depressed, it's not as active. 00:13:59.68\00:14:03.12 Okay. And this is the part we want 00:14:03.15\00:14:04.32 to turn back on and there are certain 00:14:04.35\00:14:06.97 avenues through which this can happen. 00:14:07.00\00:14:09.75 One is you are talking about physical health problems 00:14:09.78\00:14:12.10 but also the thoughts that we have, 00:14:12.13\00:14:15.07 if people are taking actions that are out of harmony 00:14:15.10\00:14:19.30 with God's design and then had guilt. 00:14:19.33\00:14:21.06 For instance guilt can disrupt 00:14:21.09\00:14:22.59 the circuitry on result of guilt. 00:14:22.62\00:14:24.17 So the first thing you do not do is just reach for medicine. 00:14:24.20\00:14:27.73 What medicines, you know, we should talk about 00:14:27.76\00:14:30.14 that because there is a place 00:14:30.17\00:14:31.21 but they are really over used. 00:14:31.24\00:14:32.71 And that's the first thing you think about. 00:14:32.74\00:14:34.33 Yeah. We need to talk about that. 00:14:34.36\00:14:35.61 Brenda, we are going to be back and answer 00:14:35.74\00:14:37.32 your question with Dr. Tim Jennings. 00:14:37.35\00:14:39.27 Give us a call at 855-644-3278. 00:14:39.30\00:14:43.33 You are watching "The Heart of Health Live." 00:14:43.36\00:14:45.75 The Heart of Health Live will return in just a moment. 00:14:51.60\00:14:54.41 I'm Dr. James Marcum and I talk to patient's 00:14:59.90\00:15:02.55 everyday who wants to know the truth in healthcare. 00:15:02.58\00:15:05.45 On our website heartwiseministries.org 00:15:05.48\00:15:09.06 you can have your questions answered. 00:15:09.09\00:15:10.71 You can read my blog where I talk about interesting 00:15:10.74\00:15:13.33 and controversial subjects in medicine. 00:15:13.36\00:15:15.61 You might choose to go to the radio or television sections 00:15:15.64\00:15:18.45 and learn more about all sorts of health topics. 00:15:18.48\00:15:20.87 Take the time and go to heartwiseministries.org. 00:15:20.90\00:15:24.98 I like to think that one day when we get to heaven, 00:15:33.27\00:15:35.85 we are going to see a list of people, people like Jared 00:15:35.88\00:15:39.39 and Susan who were introduced to Jesus 00:15:39.42\00:15:43.13 because of something we said or may be it was simple 00:15:43.16\00:15:46.66 as a passing smile, but these people will look into their past 00:15:46.69\00:15:50.46 and be able to say, I'm here because of you. 00:15:50.49\00:15:54.48 Recently you may have heard that Heartwise Ministries 00:15:54.51\00:15:56.78 has began spreading the gospel to the young, 00:15:56.81\00:15:58.90 the old, the sick and the healthy 00:15:58.93\00:16:02.00 using this very television program. 00:16:02.03\00:16:04.16 But we need your help. 00:16:04.19\00:16:06.18 We want to take this type of medical programming 00:16:06.21\00:16:08.72 to the non-believer and the person 00:16:08.76\00:16:10.73 who has closed themselves off 00:16:10.76\00:16:12.13 to traditional forms of outreach. 00:16:12.16\00:16:14.20 If you believe as we do, and wants to support Heartwise, 00:16:14.23\00:16:17.90 so that together we can count more names on the tree of life. 00:16:17.93\00:16:21.57 Please consider donating today at heartwiseministries.org 00:16:21.60\00:16:25.84 that's heartwiseministries.org... 00:16:25.87\00:16:29.58 Yes, there is a place for modern medicine 00:16:52.74\00:16:54.56 but that's not enough, there is a place for lifestyle 00:16:54.59\00:16:57.34 but that's not enough. 00:16:57.37\00:16:58.58 The real truth in medicine, the real truth in healing comes 00:16:58.61\00:17:01.74 from that relationship with the heavenly Father. 00:17:01.77\00:17:04.09 That relationship can show us the balance, 00:17:04.12\00:17:06.48 when to use modern medicine, when to use lifestyle, 00:17:06.51\00:17:09.52 and to use it for the right reasons. 00:17:09.55\00:17:11.35 Well, this book gives the solution 00:17:11.38\00:17:13.78 to the healthcare dilemma. 00:17:13.81\00:17:15.86 It answers the question why am I sick. 00:17:15.89\00:17:18.63 How do I get better and how can I have ultimate healing. 00:17:18.66\00:17:22.21 You've got questions, we've got answers 00:17:33.99\00:17:36.14 on the Heart of Health Live. 00:17:36.17\00:17:37.83 Welcome back. 00:17:37.86\00:17:40.16 Our guest this evening 00:17:40.19\00:17:41.28 if just joined us is Dr. Tim Jennings. 00:17:41.31\00:17:43.74 He is a psychiatrist, he actually 00:17:43.77\00:17:45.40 sees patients everyday. 00:17:45.43\00:17:47.04 He is president elect 00:17:47.07\00:17:48.44 at the Tennessee Psychiatric Association. 00:17:48.47\00:17:50.70 He has written some great books out there. 00:17:50.73\00:17:52.60 His website, one of his websites is comeandreason.com. 00:17:52.63\00:17:56.93 And Dr. Jennings we were talking 00:17:56.96\00:17:58.59 a little bit about medications. 00:17:58.62\00:17:59.96 You know, sometimes our patients come in and they say 00:17:59.99\00:18:01.94 they talked to their family physician and they gave me 00:18:01.97\00:18:04.85 this medicine right away. 00:18:04.88\00:18:06.36 Is that the way we should be doing things? 00:18:06.39\00:18:08.09 I will tell you, in America the number one treatment 00:18:08.12\00:18:09.94 for depression is antidepressants. 00:18:09.97\00:18:12.48 But they are overused and they often don't work. 00:18:12.51\00:18:14.86 In fact there was a study done 00:18:14.89\00:18:15.92 by the National Institute of Health where they took patients, 00:18:15.95\00:18:18.23 they were cherry picked patients, 00:18:18.26\00:18:19.43 when I say cherry picked, 00:18:19.46\00:18:20.65 either never been treated before or if they had ever been treated 00:18:20.68\00:18:22.90 they always got well, so they excluded people 00:18:22.93\00:18:25.43 who failed to respond and then they put them 00:18:25.46\00:18:27.49 on one of the SSRI medications. 00:18:27.52\00:18:29.77 How many percent of those patients 00:18:29.80\00:18:31.50 do you think got well? 00:18:31.53\00:18:32.68 I don't know, how many? 00:18:32.71\00:18:34.18 27%, 73% of the patients did not get well on antidepressants. 00:18:34.21\00:18:37.51 And then they would, went through a whole series 00:18:37.54\00:18:39.26 but the point is every time they switch them, 00:18:39.29\00:18:40.80 less percentage got well than the 27%. 00:18:40.83\00:18:42.97 And so medicines as a single 00:18:43.00\00:18:45.21 and soul treatment are not really ideal. 00:18:45.24\00:18:47.41 We want to look at the person holistically 00:18:47.44\00:18:49.26 and one of the reasons why medicines don't work well 00:18:49.29\00:18:51.32 and you get such low responses. 00:18:51.35\00:18:52.82 In order for-way the medicines work? 00:18:52.85\00:18:54.63 May be the audience would like to know this. 00:18:54.66\00:18:56.20 When one neuron wants to talk to another neuron, 00:18:56.23\00:18:58.35 the neuron releases chemical 00:18:58.38\00:19:00.21 in the little gap called the synapse. 00:19:00.24\00:19:01.73 When the neuron that releases the chemical has released it, 00:19:01.76\00:19:04.26 there is a little vacuum cleaners for reuptake pumps 00:19:04.29\00:19:06.27 that will suck that back and repack 00:19:06.30\00:19:07.63 it for the next signal. 00:19:07.66\00:19:09.01 Medicines almost all antidepressants block 00:19:09.04\00:19:10.99 those pumps, shut them down, so when the neuron fires, 00:19:11.02\00:19:13.36 it leaves the chemical out here in the space longer 00:19:13.39\00:19:15.45 but guess what happened if we blocked it, it doesn't fire. 00:19:15.48\00:19:19.84 See if it's not releasing if we block those pumps 00:19:19.87\00:19:21.78 is no big impact and remember patients brains, 00:19:21.81\00:19:24.24 okay, patients brains when they are depressed 00:19:24.27\00:19:26.26 like this, his neurons are not firing normally. 00:19:26.29\00:19:28.00 And so this is one significant reason why antidepressants 00:19:28.03\00:19:32.02 don't work well for lot of people. 00:19:32.05\00:19:33.41 Not to mention all the risks and side effect 00:19:33.44\00:19:35.64 and other problems you get with them.. 00:19:35.67\00:19:36.75 I'm glad that you understand 00:19:36.78\00:19:38.81 that because many people don't. 00:19:38.84\00:19:40.38 You know, they just right 00:19:40.41\00:19:41.48 to the medicines first of all. 00:19:41.51\00:19:43.57 Brenda, you are on with Dr. Jennings. 00:19:43.60\00:19:45.66 Can you go ahead and ask your question or comment? 00:19:45.69\00:19:50.07 Hello, hello, Brenda. Yes. 00:19:50.10\00:19:52.85 Okay, go ahead. You are on with Dr. Jennings. 00:19:52.88\00:19:55.50 Okay, Dr. Jennings. Yes. 00:19:55.53\00:19:58.25 My family, well first of that manic depression 00:19:58.28\00:20:04.31 bipolar and schizophrenic tendency. 00:20:04.34\00:20:09.80 My family treat me as if I'm a retard, 00:20:09.83\00:20:17.09 they want to take over my life and hold on to my money 00:20:17.12\00:20:22.36 which I had put in my, you know, in sisters name 00:20:22.39\00:20:27.05 and my name, it was my mistake. 00:20:27.08\00:20:30.36 But she is dead now but they still don't trust me. 00:20:30.39\00:20:35.48 Did you have a question for me Brenda? 00:20:35.51\00:20:37.77 Yes, how do you get your family to understand? 00:20:37.80\00:20:42.56 Mental illness 00:20:42.59\00:20:44.26 Yeah, so, thanks for calling Brenda. 00:20:44.29\00:20:46.82 First off for the audience, let me clarify. 00:20:46.85\00:20:49.01 She mentioned she had bipolar disorder manic depression, 00:20:49.04\00:20:52.56 the old terminology for this illness was manic depression. 00:20:52.59\00:20:56.04 And in 1980 it was actually officially 00:20:56.07\00:20:58.11 changed to bipolar disorder. 00:20:58.14\00:20:59.44 So bipolar disorder and manic depression are technically 00:20:59.47\00:21:02.09 the same illness, so it's the same illness. 00:21:02.12\00:21:05.14 And this the illness in which you not only 00:21:05.17\00:21:06.61 have depressions, you then have elevated 00:21:06.64\00:21:09.23 periods of excess and expansive energy with the mood, 00:21:09.26\00:21:13.38 decreasing for sleep, raising thoughts and often times, 00:21:13.41\00:21:16.81 sometimes people on a full manic episode 00:21:16.84\00:21:18.69 will become have a lost of touch with reality 00:21:18.72\00:21:22.09 where they become grandiose, delusional and so forth. 00:21:22.12\00:21:25.89 If that's happening, then what happens 00:21:25.92\00:21:27.94 is many families will have to step in to, 00:21:27.97\00:21:31.12 you know, intervene to help protect the person 00:21:31.15\00:21:33.56 from spending money that they don't have, 00:21:33.59\00:21:35.25 going into terrible debt and making impossible 00:21:35.28\00:21:37.16 decisions that are destructive. 00:21:37.19\00:21:38.40 Unfortunately what can happen now is when that happens 00:21:38.43\00:21:41.66 on an occasion because of a moment of decomposition, 00:21:41.69\00:21:44.63 the family can sometimes they conclude 00:21:44.66\00:21:46.81 that this is the way they are all the time. 00:21:46.84\00:21:48.55 And so the question was how do we help educate the family. 00:21:48.58\00:21:51.47 Well, first you have, have to demonstrate to the family 00:21:51.50\00:21:54.76 that when you are not either in depressed 00:21:54.79\00:21:56.45 or manic stage that you can actually function 00:21:56.48\00:21:58.49 in a stable way and most of my patients 00:21:58.52\00:22:00.73 who have bipolar disorder, when we get them 00:22:00.76\00:22:02.30 on proper regiment, they actually are very stable 00:22:02.33\00:22:04.47 for long periods of time and functioning completely 00:22:04.50\00:22:06.71 normally and don't have symptoms that would cause anybody 00:22:06.74\00:22:09.47 to think there will be a need to step in. 00:22:09.50\00:22:11.13 So I think the first step would be that, 00:22:11.16\00:22:13.24 you would need to make sure that you are taking responsibility 00:22:13.27\00:22:16.05 and living in a high functioning way 00:22:16.08\00:22:17.78 in every aspect of your life. 00:22:17.81\00:22:19.14 Then you would want to go and educate your family 00:22:19.17\00:22:20.89 that you appreciate their interventions in your life 00:22:20.92\00:22:23.48 when you have those moments 00:22:23.51\00:22:24.67 where you need their help and oversight. 00:22:24.70\00:22:26.73 And then may be draw up an agreement with them 00:22:26.76\00:22:28.95 about certain symptoms when they manifest 00:22:28.98\00:22:31.23 that's when you want them to step in and help you. 00:22:31.26\00:22:33.41 So, Brenda, there is a plan for you, 00:22:33.44\00:22:35.20 you catch all that? 00:22:35.23\00:22:36.87 I think she is gone. 00:22:36.90\00:22:38.34 Okay, well Brenda, thank you for your call here. 00:22:38.37\00:22:40.69 Ah, that's good advice, 00:22:40.72\00:22:42.94 you know, you have to sort of prove yourself. 00:22:42.97\00:22:44.47 Yeah. Prove yourself, they are going save her. 00:22:44.50\00:22:46.13 We have a question from California here. 00:22:46.16\00:22:48.94 It says this person wants to know the relationship 00:22:48.97\00:22:51.84 between Parkinson's disease and depression 00:22:51.87\00:22:54.91 and they also that's part one and is there anything 00:22:54.94\00:22:58.78 that he can do for it. 00:22:58.81\00:22:59.89 Yes, a great question. 00:22:59.92\00:23:01.18 And its interesting, Parkinson's disease is neurodegenerative. 00:23:01.21\00:23:04.15 The part of the brain that controls motor movement, 00:23:04.18\00:23:06.73 smooth motor movement with 00:23:06.76\00:23:08.01 the initiation of motor movement. 00:23:08.04\00:23:10.15 And we discover that with the brain, 00:23:10.18\00:23:11.57 it not controls motor movement but it also initiates thinking. 00:23:11.60\00:23:15.40 And so if you know anybody with Parkinson's disease, 00:23:15.43\00:23:17.51 you will notice not only do they have less 00:23:17.54\00:23:19.56 spontaneous movement of their body they have 00:23:19.59\00:23:22.93 less spontaneous expression of their face and less 00:23:22.96\00:23:25.46 spontaneous thinking because the part of brain that initiates 00:23:25.49\00:23:29.70 those types of movements is a factor that it's degenerating. 00:23:29.73\00:23:32.31 And so, yes, there is a relationship 00:23:32.34\00:23:34.21 with Parkinson's disease because neurons are dying in the brain 00:23:34.24\00:23:36.82 that give us motivation, initiative, drive to get up 00:23:36.85\00:23:39.48 and go that gets us moving, they are dying, okay, 00:23:39.51\00:23:42.67 and that gets our-it gets our thoughts moving as well. 00:23:42.70\00:23:44.72 And what can be done for it in my understanding 00:23:44.75\00:23:47.68 what needs to be done is you need to see a Neurologist 00:23:47.71\00:23:49.44 and there needs to be some type of physical intervention. 00:23:49.47\00:23:53.59 And that physical intervention could be a deep brain 00:23:53.62\00:23:55.72 stimulator perhaps if you don't want medication. 00:23:55.75\00:23:58.21 I know there are some research on stem cell research 00:23:58.24\00:24:01.44 is going on in some places. 00:24:01.47\00:24:03.22 But the most common of course is various medications 00:24:03.25\00:24:05.22 of some kind to increase the amount of dopamine, 00:24:05.25\00:24:07.95 which is a neurotransmitter in the part of the brain 00:24:07.98\00:24:09.55 with the neuron that produce that are dying. 00:24:09.58\00:24:11.58 Wow, so I think that bring up a couple of things 00:24:11.61\00:24:14.62 that I want to talk to you about is this. 00:24:14.65\00:24:16.31 It seems like, you know, we talked about, 00:24:16.34\00:24:18.12 you know, like the thyroid affecting your brain, 00:24:18.15\00:24:20.33 so that one brain disease can trigger another brain disease. 00:24:20.36\00:24:22.50 There is no question. 00:24:22.53\00:24:25.16 Parkinson's can trigger depression. 00:24:25.19\00:24:26.82 Yeah, and people have depression one of the risk factors 00:24:26.85\00:24:29.48 for Alzheimer's dementia is having history of depression 00:24:29.51\00:24:31.77 because the history of depression as I went through 00:24:31.80\00:24:33.71 before is that inflammatory cascade 00:24:33.74\00:24:35.61 and the more inflammation you have throughout life increases 00:24:35.64\00:24:38.38 your inflammatory damage to your brain, 00:24:38.41\00:24:40.07 which is a factor for getting dementia later in life. 00:24:40.10\00:24:42.69 Wow. Yeah, and since 00:24:42.72\00:24:44.89 we are talking about inflammation, 00:24:44.92\00:24:46.29 I just want to throw this out there as well. 00:24:46.32\00:24:47.93 Recent study came out and showed that people 00:24:47.96\00:24:49.85 who eat fast food or junk food have a 40 % higher rate 00:24:49.88\00:24:53.16 of depression than people who eat 00:24:53.19\00:24:54.68 a more healthy holistic diet. 00:24:54.71\00:24:56.47 And the reason for this is, the fast food and junk food 00:24:56.50\00:24:58.76 is very highly inflammatory and you increase inflammation, 00:24:58.79\00:25:02.21 you held the whole cascade eventually 00:25:02.24\00:25:03.51 increase risk of depression. 00:25:03.54\00:25:04.78 So, lifestyle and healthy lifestyle, 00:25:04.81\00:25:06.82 our choices are very important in physical health 00:25:06.85\00:25:08.75 which promotes good brain health. 00:25:08.78\00:25:10.61 Wow, that's such-- I'm going to handle this one here. 00:25:10.64\00:25:12.69 One caller says, can daily stress affect 00:25:12.72\00:25:15.53 urinary symptoms, you know? 00:25:15.56\00:25:17.12 And I would say that is definitely possible. 00:25:17.15\00:25:20.03 It could affect urinary symptoms but you want to make sure 00:25:20.06\00:25:22.74 you don't have any other urinary tract problems. 00:25:22.77\00:25:25.17 If you are man, get your prostate evaluated, 00:25:25.20\00:25:29.11 if you are woman make sure 00:25:29.14\00:25:30.35 you don't have a urinary tract infection. 00:25:30.38\00:25:32.20 Remember any type of stress rips up the body. 00:25:32.23\00:25:35.43 And you know when the body is under stress, 00:25:35.46\00:25:37.47 it does things, it triggers things. 00:25:37.50\00:25:39.55 So if you want to get a exam on this and make sure 00:25:39.58\00:25:42.49 there is no other physical problem before you blain 00:25:42.52\00:25:44.71 these symptoms on stressing. 00:25:44.74\00:25:46.48 You know some people they have lots of stress, 00:25:46.51\00:25:47.99 they have to go to bathroom all the time 00:25:48.02\00:25:49.57 and things of that nature, so that stress is bad for, 00:25:49.60\00:25:52.37 it can make almost any organ system worse. 00:25:52.40\00:25:54.82 And Dr. Jennings we have a call coming up 00:25:54.85\00:25:57.35 from Indiana after the break, but we are just 00:25:57.38\00:26:00.33 glad you joined us here. 00:26:00.36\00:26:01.69 We are here Thanks for calling. 00:30:11.99\00:30:13.84 Thank you for taking my call. 00:30:13.87\00:30:15.74 The reason for the call is I have been, 00:30:15.77\00:30:17.72 I'll give you an elevator speech, 00:30:17.75\00:30:19.14 1985, I had a account of first panic attack, 00:30:19.17\00:30:23.90 I was actually in a car as a passenger 00:30:23.93\00:30:26.88 it progressed and got worst, so my medical doctor 00:30:26.91\00:30:32.30 who was a secular doctor, he put me on Xanax and Paxil, 00:30:32.33\00:30:36.47 so I ended up with Xanax for 30 years. 00:30:36.50\00:30:40.31 Now it's at the point that I had to take more Xanax than what was 00:30:40.34\00:30:44.08 because I found out it is an addicted medication 00:30:44.11\00:30:47.62 and now I'm not even able to at this point 00:30:47.65\00:30:52.37 to even be a rider on the highways. 00:30:52.40\00:30:54.49 Basically on a highway and where there is a stay, 00:30:54.52\00:30:57.45 so I have seen a psychiatrist and a therapist, 00:30:57.48\00:31:00.38 they were secular but I'm still on medication. 00:31:00.41\00:31:03.87 God got some awesome things for me to do in life 00:31:03.90\00:31:06.62 but it's holding me back, it's a strong hold 00:31:06.65\00:31:09.62 and I'm ready to get rid of this. 00:31:09.65\00:31:11.97 How would I, what would you suggest? 00:31:12.00\00:31:13.98 Well, you know, I'm glad you called 00:31:14.01\00:31:15.09 because-- panic episode is not unusual. 00:31:15.12\00:31:20.51 Almost everybody will have a panic episode 00:31:20.54\00:31:22.75 sometime in their life 00:31:22.78\00:31:23.92 but panic disorder is when somebody has recurrence 00:31:23.95\00:31:26.99 of recurring process of panic over and over again 00:31:27.02\00:31:30.73 and panic itself is actually very amenable to your thinking 00:31:30.76\00:31:35.25 and changes in thinking and perception. 00:31:35.28\00:31:37.30 And so one of the things that can happen, 00:31:37.33\00:31:39.92 I'll just give you a simple example 00:31:39.95\00:31:41.56 of the multiple contributing factors 00:31:41.59\00:31:44.31 and reasons why people are panic, 00:31:44.34\00:31:45.56 but I'll give you one simple example. 00:31:45.59\00:31:47.09 Just imagine you are in a circumstance 00:31:47.12\00:31:49.10 where somebody is holding your head underwater 00:31:49.13\00:31:51.50 and you know five seconds, no big deal, 00:31:51.53\00:31:54.33 may be 15 seconds no big deal, 00:31:54.36\00:31:56.07 but after 20,40,50 seconds, you know, 00:31:56.10\00:31:59.27 we are going to start panicking. 00:31:59.30\00:32:00.33 Anybody is going to start panicking 00:32:00.36\00:32:01.77 your head is underwater at a certain point. 00:32:01.80\00:32:03.75 Now when you are having that panic 00:32:03.78\00:32:05.24 if somebody comes swimming along 00:32:05.27\00:32:06.43 say Dr. Jennings is swimming along with his snorkel mask 00:32:06.46\00:32:08.52 and offer you some Xanax and help you relax 00:32:08.55\00:32:10.70 that's not really what you want. 00:32:10.73\00:32:12.32 What you want is you want your head above water. 00:32:12.35\00:32:14.31 Well, sometimes you can find yourself in situations in life 00:32:14.34\00:32:16.97 where you have so many things 00:32:17.00\00:32:18.34 and responsibilities coming down on us, 00:32:18.37\00:32:20.52 so many burdens, expectations, 00:32:20.55\00:32:22.32 demands, deadlines, people after us 00:32:22.35\00:32:25.06 and people will say, I just don't feel like 00:32:25.09\00:32:27.05 I can get my head above water 00:32:27.08\00:32:28.39 but they are not talking real water, 00:32:28.42\00:32:30.47 they are talking physiological water 00:32:30.50\00:32:31.86 but when you get in that circumstance 00:32:31.89\00:32:33.15 are actually panicking just like if they were under real water. 00:32:33.18\00:32:36.62 And that's just one example 00:32:36.65\00:32:38.20 and there are many other examples 00:32:38.23\00:32:40.23 that psychologically contribute 00:32:40.26\00:32:42.22 to the sense of drowning or the sense of panic. 00:32:42.25\00:32:45.57 Additionally one another one is that 00:32:45.60\00:32:47.13 once somebody had panic on more than one occasion, 00:32:47.16\00:32:49.69 they often become afraid of having another panic attack. 00:32:49.72\00:32:52.82 Yes, yes. Okay. 00:32:52.85\00:32:54.32 And the fear of having another panic attack 00:32:54.35\00:32:56.27 actually causes panic attack, okay. 00:32:56.30\00:32:59.40 And so one of the thing that teach my patients 00:32:59.43\00:33:01.09 and sometimes it takes more than one session to teach them this. 00:33:01.12\00:33:03.48 But I ask them and I'll ask you, 00:33:03.51\00:33:05.23 how many panic attacks have you had in your life? 00:33:05.26\00:33:07.41 Approximately, 10, 50, 100, 1000? 00:33:07.44\00:33:10.59 Over a 100. Okay. 00:33:10.62\00:33:12.75 And how many of them have killed you? None. 00:33:12.78\00:33:16.41 Okay, so have you figured out from your own experience 00:33:16.44\00:33:19.17 so far that is bad as they feel, they are not dangerous? 00:33:19.20\00:33:25.20 Yes. You are hesitated. 00:33:25.23\00:33:27.63 Because they feel, they feel really bad, don't they? 00:33:27.66\00:33:30.77 It makes me want to jump out-- 00:33:30.80\00:33:32.13 like my ex-husband had to lock the doors, 00:33:32.16\00:33:34.55 and I want to jump out of the car 00:33:34.58\00:33:36.42 and run into a building 00:33:36.45\00:33:38.01 or be somewhere in a building till that. 00:33:38.04\00:33:41.07 So the first thing you have to recognize 00:33:41.10\00:33:42.53 if you really want to move past this 00:33:42.56\00:33:43.70 is to recognize from your experience, 00:33:43.73\00:33:45.45 not because Dr. Jennings said it, 00:33:45.48\00:33:46.83 but from your experience that as bad as these feel, 00:33:46.86\00:33:49.01 they are not harmful, so that in your mind, 00:33:49.04\00:33:51.24 because what happens when people have had these, 00:33:51.27\00:33:52.75 they are so afraid of having another one, 00:33:52.78\00:33:54.78 they become hyper vigilant. 00:33:54.81\00:33:56.28 You begin monitoring your own body signals 00:33:56.31\00:33:58.44 and you look for the little short pain 00:33:58.47\00:34:00.34 that might be going through 00:34:00.37\00:34:01.49 as a gas bubble goes through your gut, 00:34:01.52\00:34:03.25 you go oh no, oh no, not another one 00:34:03.28\00:34:04.94 and you actually trigger the whole panic thing happening. 00:34:04.97\00:34:07.63 And so the first thing you have to do 00:34:07.66\00:34:08.87 is you have to stop being afraid of panic. 00:34:08.90\00:34:11.73 They can't harm you, they can only feel bad 00:34:11.76\00:34:13.68 and so you sift your mental attitude towards panic 00:34:13.71\00:34:15.88 from fear to dread or dislike. 00:34:15.91\00:34:19.08 Have you ever had menstrual cramps? Yes, I have. 00:34:19.11\00:34:22.35 And did they interfere with your functioning? 00:34:22.38\00:34:24.31 Yes, they did. And do you like them? 00:34:24.34\00:34:27.60 No, I didn't Are you afraid of them? 00:34:27.63\00:34:31.26 Ah, I was, no I wasn't afraid of them but-- 00:34:31.29\00:34:34.42 See that's the attitude you have to develop towards panic, 00:34:34.45\00:34:37.11 they can interfere you, you don't like them, 00:34:37.14\00:34:38.43 they don't feel good, but they are not dangerous, 00:34:38.46\00:34:39.95 I'm not going to be afraid of them any more. 00:34:39.98\00:34:41.66 If you can make that switch in your mind, 00:34:41.69\00:34:43.37 you will reduce your panic by 75% 00:34:43.40\00:34:45.22 without even doing anything else. 00:34:45.25\00:34:46.93 And then if you follow up with a good therapist, 00:34:46.96\00:34:48.75 they can help you under-- 00:34:48.78\00:34:49.94 get some of the other cognitive things 00:34:49.97\00:34:51.47 that are going on your mind that contribute to panic, 00:34:51.50\00:34:53.54 you can probably get these things 00:34:53.57\00:34:54.60 knocked out in a few months. 00:34:54.63\00:34:56.70 Hmm, thank you. All right, you take care. 00:34:56.73\00:34:58.85 Thanks for calling. Thank you, bye 00:34:58.88\00:35:00.74 You are welcome. Wow, wow. 00:35:00.77\00:35:02.44 That was some great, you know, 00:35:02.47\00:35:03.79 that must be scary to have those type of feelings 00:35:03.82\00:35:06.11 but that was some great advice. 00:35:06.14\00:35:08.28 We have another question, it's come in and says, 00:35:08.31\00:35:10.39 in depression are there some natural remedies 00:35:10.42\00:35:14.57 that I can do for depression? 00:35:14.60\00:35:16.71 Natural things depression. Okay, This is a great question. 00:35:16.74\00:35:18.46 And to answer the question I want people to remember 00:35:18.49\00:35:20.83 we talked about earlier, 00:35:20.86\00:35:22.11 how the brain circuits are out of balance, okay, 00:35:22.14\00:35:25.09 and how there is a high inflammatory cascade going on 00:35:25.12\00:35:27.88 that are pushing people to depression, 00:35:27.91\00:35:29.66 so to a degree we can reverse that process 00:35:29.69\00:35:32.09 then we can help treat 00:35:32.12\00:35:33.65 or put the brain back in the healthy direction. 00:35:33.68\00:35:36.16 So, a change in lifestyle, 00:35:36.19\00:35:41.56 removing the high inflammatory foods 00:35:41.59\00:35:45.17 adding in anti-inflammatory foods 00:35:45.20\00:35:48.36 which would be fruits, vegetables 00:35:48.39\00:35:50.87 and things like this that are high in antioxidants 00:35:50.90\00:35:53.00 and then there are certain nutrients 00:35:53.03\00:35:54.17 that are very important for brain help 00:35:54.20\00:35:55.68 that actually have shown to help mood stabilizing effects. 00:35:55.71\00:35:58.54 Omega 3 fatty acids and I won't go 00:35:58.57\00:36:00.23 into all the details in that right now. 00:36:00.26\00:36:01.38 If we have time we'll come back to it. 00:36:01.41\00:36:03.21 Antecedal cysteine, antecedal cysteine 00:36:03.24\00:36:04.93 is a mitochondrial membrane stabilizer, 00:36:04.96\00:36:06.74 mitochondria, little organelles 00:36:06.77\00:36:07.82 inside your cells that produce energy 00:36:07.85\00:36:09.66 but people have mood disorders they are dysfunctional, 00:36:09.69\00:36:11.37 they kick up lots of free radicals, 00:36:11.40\00:36:12.84 this is damaging to the brain. 00:36:12.87\00:36:14.19 When you take antecedal cysteine as a supplement, 00:36:14.22\00:36:16.52 it actually stabilizes those membranes 00:36:16.55\00:36:18.10 and actually improves not only cognition but stabilizes mood. 00:36:18.13\00:36:20.84 L-Methylfolate is metabolized version of folic acid, 00:36:20.87\00:36:24.63 only the metabolized version of folic acid 00:36:24.66\00:36:26.98 crosses the blood brain barrier 00:36:27.01\00:36:29.22 where it's a require co-factor for your brain 00:36:29.25\00:36:31.42 to make neuron transmitters like dopamine, 00:36:31.45\00:36:33.17 norepinephrine, serotonin. 00:36:33.20\00:36:34.64 Now this is what people need to hear. 00:36:34.67\00:36:35.90 70% of people with depression have a genetic mutation 00:36:35.93\00:36:39.63 where their body does not metabolize 00:36:39.66\00:36:42.01 folic acid from food to form the brain needs, 00:36:42.04\00:36:43.89 so even if they are getting it 00:36:43.92\00:36:44.95 in a regular vitamin or getting it in food, 00:36:44.98\00:36:47.28 if they have this genetic mutation, 00:36:47.31\00:36:48.69 it's not getting in the brain. 00:36:48.72\00:36:50.15 Antidepressants do not cause 00:36:50.18\00:36:53.37 the brain to make neurotransmitters. 00:36:53.40\00:36:55.43 Antidepressants effect the machine 00:36:55.46\00:36:56.98 where they transports them. 00:36:57.01\00:36:58.09 So if we use little analogy, 00:36:58.12\00:36:59.64 Little Debbie factory makes all debbies. 00:36:59.67\00:37:02.21 Trucks moves all the debbies around. 00:37:02.24\00:37:04.13 Antidepressants are working on the trucks. 00:37:04.16\00:37:06.42 Now the folic cause the factory to make more, 00:37:06.45\00:37:08.91 so if you have--now folic deficiency factory shutdown, 00:37:08.94\00:37:12.72 we give meds, we may speed up the trucks, 00:37:12.75\00:37:14.35 or effect the machinery that transports them, 00:37:14.38\00:37:16.01 but we don't know how many neuron transmitters, 00:37:16.04\00:37:17.33 so its not having a big clinical impact, 00:37:17.36\00:37:18.92 so this is another thing you can do. 00:37:18.95\00:37:20.36 Also physical exercise. Okay. 00:37:20.39\00:37:22.63 When you exercise regularly, 00:37:22.66\00:37:24.11 your muscles produce Interleukin-10 00:37:24.14\00:37:26.40 which is a very powerful anti-inflammatory, 00:37:26.43\00:37:28.28 Interleukin that suppresses those inflammatory factors 00:37:28.31\00:37:31.34 that we talked about earlier. 00:37:31.37\00:37:32.89 Also exercise causes the brain to producing endorphins 00:37:32.92\00:37:35.79 and enkephalins which help mood 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.99 and more importantly regular exercises 00:37:38.02\00:37:40.06 turns on multiple different neurotrophins. 00:37:40.09\00:37:42.16 Neurotrophins are proteins 00:37:42.19\00:37:43.50 that cause the brain to make new neurons. 00:37:43.53\00:37:45.95 So you will actually sprout new connections, make new neurons. 00:37:45.98\00:37:48.53 A study done of elderly people showed that 00:37:48.56\00:37:50.31 if they exercise regularly, they actually can measure 00:37:50.34\00:37:52.73 2% growth in the memory circuits of the brain, 00:37:52.76\00:37:55.30 it's called the hippocampus, 00:37:55.33\00:37:56.37 which reverse over two years of aging 00:37:56.40\00:37:58.01 just by exercising regularly. 00:37:58.04\00:37:59.55 So physical exercise is critical to good brain health. 00:37:59.58\00:38:02.49 So all of these things and then healthy spirituality. 00:38:02.52\00:38:05.29 If people meditate on a God of love 00:38:05.32\00:38:07.09 and worship the God of love, we can actually, 00:38:07.12\00:38:09.68 and I won't go into details how it work but the study showed 00:38:09.71\00:38:11.98 we can measure growth in their love circuit of the brain 00:38:12.01\00:38:14.23 and calm the fear circuit of the brain 00:38:14.26\00:38:16.62 from doing this within 30 days time. 00:38:16.65\00:38:18.82 We can actually see this kind of change happening. 00:38:18.85\00:38:20.78 But, if we worship and meditate on fear 00:38:20.81\00:38:22.99 inducing God construct, wrathful, punitive, 00:38:23.02\00:38:25.18 and appeasement needing God constructs, 00:38:25.21\00:38:27.05 this action is damaging to the brain 00:38:27.08\00:38:28.68 cause increase in fear, anxiety and inflammatory cascades, 00:38:28.71\00:38:31.74 so that's why we focus 00:38:31.77\00:38:32.98 on teaching people about God's love. 00:38:33.01\00:38:34.87 Yeah, that's great. Welcome back. 00:41:36.30\00:41:39.99 I'm glad you've stayed with us. 00:41:40.02\00:41:42.38 We're answering questions not only about depression 00:41:42.41\00:41:44.77 but about different mental illnesses, 00:41:44.80\00:41:47.97 I almost tripped over that word. 00:41:48.00\00:41:49.59 And it's a big deal, one in four of us suffer from it 00:41:49.62\00:41:52.12 the world we live in puts a lot of stress 00:41:52.15\00:41:54.20 and there's lots of physical things. 00:41:54.23\00:41:55.61 And if you have mental illness or think you might be getting it 00:41:55.64\00:41:58.65 this is what we want to treat. 00:41:58.68\00:41:59.93 We want to do these things, so we can prevent things. 00:41:59.96\00:42:02.75 We have a quick question here, this person is taking Zoloft, 00:42:02.78\00:42:05.90 is this a good medicine for depression? 00:42:05.93\00:42:09.11 It is no better nor any worse than 00:42:09.14\00:42:11.68 any of the other antidepressants on the market really. 00:42:11.71\00:42:14.87 The question is are you well on this with no side effects, 00:42:14.90\00:42:17.76 then it's a good medicine for you, so that's the deal. 00:42:17.79\00:42:21.20 The success rate of any of these? 00:42:21.23\00:42:22.96 They are basically all the same. 00:42:22.99\00:42:24.17 Yeah, not much-- 00:42:24.20\00:42:25.53 None is really being shown to be better than others. 00:42:25.56\00:42:26.73 And it's a sort of mix and match type of thing, isn't it? 00:42:26.76\00:42:28.84 Yeah, different people respond differently. 00:42:28.87\00:42:31.24 Some people do have a problem, others don't have. 00:42:31.27\00:42:34.22 And this is a question that deals with 00:42:34.25\00:42:36.70 watching Christian videos versus watching secular TV. 00:42:36.73\00:42:41.46 Can different types of things we can watch-- 00:42:41.49\00:42:42.68 For children or for adults? 00:42:42.71\00:42:43.82 For children, it says specific for children, 00:42:43.85\00:42:45.88 what type of thing should they should be watching? 00:42:45.91\00:42:48.37 Yeah, this is very critical. I'm going to-- 00:42:48.40\00:42:49.89 and before we answer the question, 00:42:49.92\00:42:51.41 you need to understand a little about normal brain development. 00:42:51.44\00:42:54.12 When a baby is born into the world, 00:42:54.15\00:42:55.54 the baby's brain has hundreds of millions of neurons 00:42:55.57\00:42:58.57 more at birth than that brain will have 00:42:58.60\00:43:00.73 by the time the baby is eight years of age. 00:43:00.76\00:43:02.95 In the first eight years of age 00:43:02.98\00:43:04.26 regardless of that child environment 00:43:04.29\00:43:06.01 if that is a healthy environment or not, 00:43:06.04\00:43:07.41 the brain is busy knocking off neurons 00:43:07.44\00:43:09.86 by the hundreds of millions. 00:43:09.89\00:43:11.82 That first, it doesn't too good. 00:43:11.85\00:43:13.59 But conceptualize that is Michelangelo block of marble 00:43:13.62\00:43:16.08 when Michelangelo gets it, 00:43:16.11\00:43:17.73 and Michelangelo block of marble when he is done with it. 00:43:17.76\00:43:20.42 When he is done with it, he has less marble 00:43:20.45\00:43:22.28 but he now has a masterpiece. 00:43:22.31\00:43:23.92 The brain comes into the world 00:43:23.95\00:43:24.98 prepared to be acted upon the education, 00:43:25.01\00:43:26.98 environment, experience, neural circuits 00:43:27.01\00:43:29.61 which should be in exercised and used will actually spin, 00:43:29.64\00:43:32.20 new neurons be recruited to it, 00:43:32.23\00:43:33.89 that neural circuit will get bigger and more complicated. 00:43:33.92\00:43:37.00 But neuron circuits which are not being used 00:43:37.03\00:43:38.91 will be pruned back and deleted. 00:43:38.94\00:43:40.99 Okay, this is normal brain physical development, 00:43:41.02\00:43:44.24 so when we understand that then we can think, 00:43:44.27\00:43:46.08 okay, what about television. 00:43:46.11\00:43:47.52 What it's going to do to brain, 00:43:47.55\00:43:48.58 and how it is going to effect it. 00:43:48.61\00:43:50.32 And the critical thing, a lot of people say, 00:43:50.35\00:43:52.02 well, is it rating- G rating versus R rating. 00:43:52.05\00:43:55.49 Is that the critical thing? It's not. 00:43:55.52\00:43:56.89 That's actually secondary. 00:43:56.92\00:43:58.33 The critical thing is whether it's the theatrical 00:43:58.36\00:44:00.69 entertainment in nature or educational in nature. 00:44:00.72\00:44:03.56 Theatrical television has its primary function on the brain 00:44:03.59\00:44:07.19 to activate the emotion circuits of the brain 00:44:07.22\00:44:09.63 while simultaneously turning off prefrontal cortex 00:44:09.66\00:44:12.60 where you reason and think. 00:44:12.63\00:44:14.42 The theatrical programming that we watch, 00:44:14.45\00:44:16.06 it wants to get an emotional reaction, 00:44:16.09\00:44:17.56 to get you laugh if it's a comedy, 00:44:17.59\00:44:19.03 to get you to cry if it's a drama, 00:44:19.06\00:44:20.61 to be get you to be afraid if it is a suspense, 00:44:20.64\00:44:22.48 to get you angry in some movies 00:44:22.51\00:44:24.81 but it's to get an emotionally reaction 00:44:24.84\00:44:26.64 and the more intense the emotion then better the programming. 00:44:26.67\00:44:30.53 And while simultaneously turning off your thinking part 00:44:30.56\00:44:33.09 and if you don't believe me, 00:44:33.12\00:44:34.15 if you watch theatrical television, 00:44:34.18\00:44:35.92 the next time you are watching your favorite show 00:44:35.95\00:44:37.44 actually start thinking about it. 00:44:37.47\00:44:38.71 Start asking critically the whole way through 00:44:38.74\00:44:40.42 what's so likely if this could happen in real life. 00:44:40.45\00:44:42.84 And if you do that you would certainly find 00:44:42.87\00:44:44.40 hey, this is enjoyable and we enjoy when we-- 00:44:44.43\00:44:47.64 I've have done this with friends and they say, 00:44:47.67\00:44:49.22 hey, you are not supposed to think about it, okay. 00:44:49.25\00:44:51.71 Okay, when you understand that, 00:44:51.74\00:44:53.78 then you understand the more television you watch, 00:44:53.81\00:44:55.92 the more activation of your emotion circuit you get. 00:44:55.95\00:44:58.68 The less activation of your prefrontal cortex 00:44:58.71\00:45:00.95 where you reason, think, plans, problem solve, 00:45:00.98\00:45:03.69 self restrains, self govern. 00:45:03.72\00:45:05.31 Okay, so when kids had adolescents 00:45:05.34\00:45:07.90 and they had the brain that's watching a lot of TV 00:45:07.93\00:45:10.30 then the hormones are gonna inflame those mood circuits, 00:45:10.33\00:45:12.46 they become moody, irritable, impulsive, they often act out 00:45:12.49\00:45:15.28 and they will often turn to alcohol and drugs 00:45:15.31\00:45:17.48 to try and calm down a circuitry 00:45:17.51\00:45:19.35 that their prefrontal cortex 00:45:19.38\00:45:20.48 is no longer capable of restraining. 00:45:20.51\00:45:22.79 And I won't go to the studies, 00:45:22.82\00:45:24.52 there's lot of studies that show and have documented this 00:45:24.55\00:45:27.37 that whether it's R rated or G rated programming, 00:45:27.40\00:45:30.15 if it's theatrical in nature 00:45:30.18\00:45:31.54 you have impairments in attention, 00:45:31.57\00:45:33.17 impairments in focus 00:45:33.20\00:45:34.31 and impairments in self-governance 00:45:34.34\00:45:36.52 and more impulsivity, these types of things 00:45:36.55\00:45:38.46 and the study done by Center Wall 00:45:38.49\00:45:40.79 published in Journal of the American Medical Association 00:45:40.82\00:45:43.95 actually showed that theatrical entertainment 00:45:43.98\00:45:45.94 increase the risk of-- 00:45:45.97\00:45:47.31 increase the rate of homicide in society, 00:45:47.34\00:45:49.65 because you become less-- 00:45:49.68\00:45:51.40 you become more disinhibited or less inhibited, 00:45:51.43\00:45:53.93 you can't restrain those impulses as much 00:45:53.96\00:45:56.47 where as educational television 00:45:56.50\00:45:58.93 did not show any of those problems 00:45:58.96\00:46:00.63 because educational television is designed 00:46:00.66\00:46:02.01 to exercise this prefrontal cortex. 00:46:02.04\00:46:03.55 So it really doesn't matter 00:46:03.58\00:46:04.61 if you are watching theatrical Christian programming 00:46:04.64\00:46:06.59 or theatrical non Christian programming, 00:46:06.62\00:46:08.64 you still firing emotion circuits 00:46:08.67\00:46:10.21 not prefrontal cortex circuit, 00:46:10.24\00:46:11.36 so you are not going to develop 00:46:11.39\00:46:12.42 the prefrontal cortex like you should. 00:46:12.45\00:46:14.17 And this is actually higher risk factor 00:46:14.20\00:46:15.74 in both behavior, attention disorders, 00:46:15.77\00:46:19.00 anxiety disorders and mood disorders, 00:46:19.03\00:46:20.90 all of them will be increased 00:46:20.93\00:46:22.14 if you watch a lot of theatrical program. 00:46:22.17\00:46:23.93 Wow, that's very interesting. 00:46:23.96\00:46:25.56 And fortunately our program that we are doing tonight, 00:46:25.59\00:46:27.42 this is educational programming 00:46:27.45\00:46:28.98 so you can watch this and record it 00:46:29.01\00:46:30.69 and like to go over and over again. 00:46:30.72\00:46:32.33 There you go, there you go. 00:46:32.36\00:46:33.71 And if want to, you can watch it on the website again, 00:46:33.74\00:46:36.85 that heartwiseministries.org, 00:46:36.88\00:46:39.18 and you can watch this program, it will be on all the time. 00:46:39.21\00:46:41.60 You can always go and download it 00:46:41.63\00:46:42.78 if you miss something that Dr. Jennings talk very fast 00:46:42.81\00:46:45.33 you can always go back and watch it again. 00:46:45.36\00:46:47.30 Kay, from Alabama. 00:46:47.33\00:46:48.75 You are on with Dr. Tim Jennings, go ahead. 00:46:48.78\00:46:52.26 I just wanted to share briefly with you 00:46:52.29\00:46:54.42 that in 1990 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder 00:46:54.45\00:46:59.29 but I don't have extreme manic things 00:46:59.32\00:47:04.24 and I don't get extremely depress. 00:47:04.27\00:47:06.43 I have done a lot of research and I believe that I have PTSD 00:47:06.46\00:47:11.17 and I read a book called EMDR by Francine Shapiro 00:47:11.20\00:47:16.46 and the treatment seemed like-- 00:47:16.49\00:47:18.35 when I read book that they would be ideal for me 00:47:18.38\00:47:21.25 and I wanted to know if you know about EMDR 00:47:21.28\00:47:25.28 and what is your opinion of those treatments? 00:47:25.31\00:47:28.23 Thanks for calling, and I would like to first tell our audience 00:47:28.26\00:47:30.96 that bipolar disorder is one of the disorders 00:47:30.99\00:47:32.77 that's most commonly misdiagnosed. 00:47:32.80\00:47:35.13 About 70% of the time it's misdiagnosed. 00:47:35.16\00:47:38.13 Okay, and its missed on both sides of that equation. 00:47:38.16\00:47:40.93 Patients with it don't get diagnosed properly as bipolar, 00:47:40.96\00:47:43.84 and many patients get diagnosed as bipolar 00:47:43.87\00:47:45.98 who don't actually have bipolar. 00:47:46.01\00:47:47.48 And there is a lot of things that can mimic or look like it. 00:47:47.51\00:47:50.19 Attention deficit patients 00:47:50.22\00:47:51.61 because of the prefrontal cortex dysfunction, 00:47:51.64\00:47:53.64 can have mood instability 00:47:53.67\00:47:55.06 and get wrongly diagnosed as bipolar. 00:47:55.09\00:47:57.18 Post dramatic stress people particularly if the trauma 00:47:57.21\00:48:00.01 has happened in childhood not in adulthood, 00:48:00.04\00:48:02.94 generally they will go up with a lot of mood instability, 00:48:02.97\00:48:06.06 that can be misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder. 00:48:06.09\00:48:09.07 So now to you question about the EMDR. 00:48:09.10\00:48:11.36 This is a therapy that is designed to help people 00:48:11.39\00:48:15.03 with trauma issues process those trauma issues 00:48:15.06\00:48:19.30 and basically make different and new neural pathways 00:48:19.33\00:48:22.90 for handling those emotional memories 00:48:22.93\00:48:25.05 and basically while you are processing 00:48:25.08\00:48:27.08 the emotional memories, 00:48:27.11\00:48:28.14 they are having you to do some rapid eye movements 00:48:28.17\00:48:30.11 and the rapid eye movements are simultaneously activating 00:48:30.14\00:48:32.94 the neural circuits that fire the-- 00:48:32.97\00:48:36.98 you know motor movements of the eyes-- 00:48:37.01\00:48:38.70 and that seems to have an impact on what's going on in the brain, 00:48:38.73\00:48:42.36 so it allows you to process those things without going down 00:48:42.39\00:48:45.45 the same old recurrent habitual dysfunctional pathway, 00:48:45.48\00:48:49.05 so some people have found it very beneficial. 00:48:49.08\00:48:51.18 It would be reasonable for you to explore. 00:48:51.21\00:48:53.39 Kay, is it helping you? Did you try it? 00:48:53.42\00:48:55.94 I have not tried it yet, but I do have an appointment-- 00:48:55.97\00:48:59.81 the psychologist that I spoke to said that 00:48:59.84\00:49:02.95 three treatments would probably be all I would need, 00:49:02.98\00:49:06.32 so I'm really encouraged by that 00:49:06.35\00:49:08.76 because I have been on medication 00:49:08.79\00:49:10.33 for bipolar disorder since 1990. 00:49:10.36\00:49:13.90 Well, I encourage you to go try and see if that helps you. 00:49:13.93\00:49:16.26 Yeah, thank you very much. 00:49:16.29\00:49:17.75 That's what I wanted to hear. You are welcome. 00:49:17.78\00:49:19.76 You know that was very interesting Dr. Jennings 00:49:19.79\00:49:22.34 that you point out misdiagnosis, that's a large number. 00:49:22.37\00:49:26.17 A lot, it's huge. 00:49:26.20\00:49:27.35 Bipolar disorder is very difficult to diagnose. 00:49:27.38\00:49:30.06 People there, for instance when she first started talking about 00:49:30.09\00:49:33.73 I never had the high highs or the low lows 00:49:33.76\00:49:35.63 but had a lot of mood instability, 00:49:35.66\00:49:36.98 I thought she might be describing Cyclothymia 00:49:37.01\00:49:39.14 which is exactly that, two years or more 00:49:39.17\00:49:41.06 if somebody whose mood is just up and down 00:49:41.09\00:49:42.86 but never high higher or low low. 00:49:42.89\00:49:45.01 But, you know, she mentioned PTSD 00:49:45.04\00:49:47.43 and patients with childhood traumas 00:49:47.46\00:49:48.82 often have this mood instability, 00:49:48.85\00:49:50.21 they have difficult time regulating their mood. 00:49:50.24\00:49:52.02 So, I guess, you know, 00:49:52.05\00:49:53.10 when I see patients come to me in the office 00:49:53.13\00:49:55.02 and they are on these medicines for bipolar, 00:49:55.05\00:49:57.56 you know, three out of four misdiagnosis. 00:49:57.59\00:50:01.26 And you have some of these medicines 00:50:01.29\00:50:02.32 interfere with some of the medicines I give. 00:50:02.35\00:50:05.13 Well, you know, sometimes I said- 00:50:05.16\00:50:07.86 it doesn't mean the one you are saying is misdiagnosed. 00:50:07.89\00:50:09.64 Right, right, hope not, hope not, okay. 00:50:09.67\00:50:12.69 We are running out of time now. 00:50:12.72\00:50:14.48 We are just glad that doctor-- we got one more segment, 00:50:14.51\00:50:16.56 we gonna try to get your call real controversial subjects in medicine. 00:51:12.83\00:51:15.78 You might choose to go to the radio or television sections 00:51:15.81\00:51:18.43 and learn more about all sorts of health topics. 00:51:18.46\00:51:21.25 Take the time and go to heartwiseministries.org. 00:51:21.28\00:51:25.02 Yes, there is a place for modern medicine 00:51:52.71\00:51:54.67 but that's not enough, 00:51:54.70\00:51:56.02 there is a place for lifestyle but that's not enough. 00:51:56.05\00:51:58.72 The real truth in medicine, the real truth in healing 00:51:58.75\00:52:01.46 comes from that relationship with the heavenly Father. 00:52:01.49\00:52:04.09 That relationship can show us the balance, 00:52:04.12\00:52:06.55 when to use modern medicine, when to use lifestyle, 00:52:06.58\00:52:09.51 and to use it for the right reasons. 00:52:09.54\00:52:11.06 Well, this book gives the solution 00:52:11.09\00:52:13.72 to the healthcare dilemma. 00:52:13.75\00:52:15.91 It answers the question, why am I sick. 00:52:15.94\00:52:19.09 How do I get better 00:52:19.12\00:52:20.30 and how can I have ultimate healing. 00:52:20.33\00:52:23.53 I like to think that one day when we get to heaven, 00:52:33.39\00:52:36.31 we are going to see a list of people, 00:52:36.34\00:52:38.16 people like Jared and Susan who were introduced to Jesus 00:52:38.19\00:52:43.49 because of something we said 00:52:43.52\00:52:44.73 or may be it was simple as a passing smile, 00:52:44.76\00:52:48.69 but these people will look into their past 00:52:48.72\00:52:50.78 and be able to say I'm here because of you. 00:52:50.81\00:52:54.58 Recently you may have heard that Heartwise Ministries 00:52:54.61\00:52:56.83 has began spreading the gospel to the young, 00:52:56.86\00:52:59.39 the old, the sick and the healthy 00:52:59.42\00:53:02.18 using this very television program. 00:53:02.21\00:53:04.42 But we need your help. 00:53:04.45\00:53:06.41 We want to take this type 00:53:06.44\00:53:07.61 of medical programming to the non-believer 00:53:07.64\00:53:10.06 and the person who has closed themselves off 00:53:10.09\00:53:12.23 to traditional forms of outreach. 00:53:12.26\00:53:14.19 If you believe as we do, and wants to support Heartwise, 00:53:14.22\00:53:18.06 so that together we can count more names on the tree of life. 00:53:18.09\00:53:21.58 Please
