Welcome to Heaven's Point of View. 00:00:16.18\00:00:18.01 My name is J.D. Quinn 00:00:18.05\00:00:20.02 and we are following the series Love, Marriage, Sex and Divorce 00:00:20.05\00:00:24.29 according to the New Testament. 00:00:24.32\00:00:26.39 My special guest, our host is Dr. Tom Sheperd. 00:00:26.42\00:00:31.09 And Tom, this is I think one of your favorite parts 00:00:31.13\00:00:34.70 of this particular series. 00:00:34.73\00:00:37.37 Yeah. 00:00:37.40\00:00:38.73 And I know that we studied, excuse me, 00:00:38.77\00:00:40.10 I know that we studied the first, 00:00:40.14\00:00:41.77 now we're gonna catch 00:00:41.80\00:00:43.14 the last half of 1 Corinthians 6. 00:00:43.17\00:00:46.14 1 Corinthians 6 is, of all the passages 00:00:46.17\00:00:49.41 that I studied with the students 00:00:49.44\00:00:50.78 in this course that I teach, 00:00:50.81\00:00:53.58 I'm just deeply struck by the amazing theology 00:00:53.62\00:00:59.05 that Paul brings to bear in this particular passage. 00:00:59.09\00:01:02.52 So I enjoyed a lot talking to the students about it 00:01:02.56\00:01:06.93 and just walking through it 00:01:06.96\00:01:08.30 and trying to explain what Paul means. 00:01:08.33\00:01:11.90 So I think what we should do is read the whole passage. 00:01:11.93\00:01:14.47 I think it's always good to read the scripture. 00:01:14.50\00:01:16.87 When I teach Sabbath school, I tell my Sabbath school class, 00:01:16.91\00:01:21.51 when you know we don't have any time for anything else, 00:01:21.54\00:01:23.95 let's read the Bible. 00:01:23.98\00:01:25.31 Amen. We read the scripture. 00:01:25.35\00:01:27.05 And actually in Sabbath school class 00:01:27.08\00:01:28.65 that helps a lot because some people, 00:01:28.68\00:01:30.65 well, may be they haven't read every, 00:01:30.69\00:01:32.55 they haven't studied the whole lesson. 00:01:32.59\00:01:34.16 And this gives them a context. 00:01:34.19\00:01:35.52 And then we talk about what the Bible says. 00:01:35.56\00:01:37.89 Focus our attention on what the Bible says, 00:01:37.93\00:01:39.36 so that's what we'll do here. 00:01:39.39\00:01:40.76 1 Corinthians 6:12-20. 00:01:40.80\00:01:43.37 Why don't you read it for us? 00:01:43.40\00:01:45.03 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. 00:01:45.07\00:01:48.80 All things are lawful for me, 00:01:48.84\00:01:50.24 but I will not be brought unto the power of any. 00:01:50.27\00:01:53.27 Foods for the stomach and foods and the stomach for foods 00:01:53.31\00:01:56.71 but God will destroy both it and them. 00:01:56.75\00:01:59.48 Now the body is not for sexual immorality, 00:01:59.51\00:02:02.38 but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 00:02:02.42\00:02:05.25 And God raised both the Lord 00:02:05.29\00:02:07.46 and will also raise us up by His power. 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.69 Do you not know 00:02:10.73\00:02:12.29 that your bodies are members of Christ? 00:02:12.33\00:02:14.53 Shall I then take the members of Christ 00:02:14.56\00:02:16.50 and make them members of a harlot? 00:02:16.53\00:02:18.47 Certainly not! 00:02:18.50\00:02:20.00 Or do you not know 00:02:20.04\00:02:21.60 that he who is joined to a harlot 00:02:21.64\00:02:23.41 is one body with her? 00:02:23.44\00:02:26.21 For, "The two," He says, "shall become one flesh." 00:02:26.24\00:02:30.81 But he who is joined to the Lord 00:02:30.85\00:02:32.58 is one spirit with Him. 00:02:32.61\00:02:34.45 Flee sexual immorality. 00:02:34.48\00:02:36.55 Every sin that a man does is outside the body, 00:02:36.58\00:02:39.75 but he who commits sexually immorality 00:02:39.79\00:02:41.82 sins against his own body. 00:02:41.86\00:02:43.93 Or do you not know 00:02:43.96\00:02:46.59 that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit 00:02:46.63\00:02:49.00 who is in you, 00:02:49.03\00:02:51.77 whom you have from God, 00:02:51.80\00:02:57.41 and you are not of your own? 00:02:57.44\00:02:59.91 For you were bought at a price, 00:02:59.94\00:03:02.74 therefore glorify God in your body 00:03:02.78\00:03:05.78 and in your spirit, which are God's." 00:03:05.81\00:03:08.72 Right. 00:03:08.75\00:03:10.09 Amen. Yeah. 00:03:10.12\00:03:11.45 Now-- Wow. 00:03:11.49\00:03:12.82 We noticed last time when we studied this 00:03:12.85\00:03:14.96 that the key to understanding this passage 00:03:14.99\00:03:19.83 is that Paul is responding to certain slogans 00:03:19.86\00:03:23.87 that were that the Corinthians used to hate. 00:03:23.90\00:03:28.04 Yeah. 00:03:28.07\00:03:29.40 Sometimes when I read this in class, 00:03:29.44\00:03:31.47 I teach my students how to read the Bible aloud. 00:03:31.51\00:03:34.84 Because well, a lot of people just don't know 00:03:34.88\00:03:37.85 how to read the Bible aloud too well. 00:03:37.88\00:03:39.45 And that was a little tough on the reader right there. 00:03:39.48\00:03:42.18 I want them when they are preachers 00:03:42.22\00:03:45.15 to encourage people to open their Bibles 00:03:45.19\00:03:47.92 and have their Bible with them. 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.52 So I tell them, when you tell them 00:03:49.56\00:03:51.26 to look up a passage or the scripture, 00:03:51.29\00:03:53.80 repeat the reference three times. 00:03:53.83\00:03:55.96 So that gives them time to open their Bible 00:03:56.00\00:03:57.80 and find it and everything. 00:03:57.83\00:03:59.17 So I said how would you read this 00:03:59.20\00:04:01.24 to really get across that Paul is using the slogans. 00:04:01.27\00:04:04.67 And so let me just give a little example 00:04:04.71\00:04:06.74 of reading verses maybe 12 and 13 00:04:06.78\00:04:10.05 so you get a little feel for that. 00:04:10.08\00:04:12.55 And see if you can tell which words are the words 00:04:12.58\00:04:16.05 that are the Corinthian slogans 00:04:16.08\00:04:18.32 and which words are Paul's words. 00:04:18.35\00:04:20.22 By the way, by the way I read it, okay. 00:04:20.26\00:04:22.92 So here we go, this is verse 12, 00:04:22.96\00:04:24.33 1 Corinthians 6:12. 00:04:24.36\00:04:26.96 "All things are lawful for me, 00:04:27.00\00:04:30.50 but not all things are helpful. 00:04:30.53\00:04:32.80 All things are lawful for me, 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.67 but I will not be enslaved by anything. 00:04:35.70\00:04:38.71 Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food 00:04:38.74\00:04:40.91 and God will destroy both of them one and the other. 00:04:40.94\00:04:45.71 The body is not meant for sexual immorality, 00:04:45.75\00:04:48.05 but for the Lord, 00:04:48.08\00:04:50.02 and the Lord for the body. 00:04:50.05\00:04:51.39 And God raised the Lord 00:04:51.42\00:04:52.95 and will also raise us up by His power." 00:04:52.99\00:04:56.26 Now could you tell 00:04:56.29\00:04:57.63 which parts were the Corinthian slogans? 00:04:57.66\00:05:00.60 Yes. 00:05:00.63\00:05:01.96 Which part? 00:05:02.00\00:05:03.33 Oh, I'd say that are all things. 00:05:03.37\00:05:06.67 Yeah, when they said all things are lawful for me. 00:05:06.70\00:05:09.40 I said it, quick. 00:05:09.44\00:05:10.77 And all things are lawful for me. 00:05:10.81\00:05:12.51 I said it quick, 00:05:12.54\00:05:13.88 I said it kind of like in a sing songy voice. 00:05:13.91\00:05:16.04 And then I made a big pause. 00:05:16.08\00:05:18.71 Yes. 00:05:18.75\00:05:20.08 And then I gave Paul's answer. Yes. 00:05:20.12\00:05:22.05 And that's what we studied some the last time 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.55 which is these first verses and I sort of getting an idea 00:05:23.59\00:05:26.86 that Paul is responding to the Corinthians 00:05:26.89\00:05:30.23 and the slogans that were going around with them 00:05:30.26\00:05:33.90 and all these different ideas that they had 00:05:33.93\00:05:36.67 he responds to them. 00:05:36.70\00:05:38.03 This time actually what we're gonna look at 00:05:38.07\00:05:40.30 is besides responding to their slogans, 00:05:40.34\00:05:43.27 their slogans in verse 12, slogans in verse 13, 00:05:43.30\00:05:47.58 slogans in even in verse 18. 00:05:47.61\00:05:50.55 But this time we're gonna focus our attention on another part 00:05:50.58\00:05:55.42 of what Paul says in this passage. 00:05:55.45\00:05:57.72 And that is he uses the phrase, "Don't you know." 00:05:57.75\00:06:02.16 "Don't you know." "Do you not know." 00:06:02.19\00:06:05.56 Now those words appear, 00:06:05.59\00:06:08.16 those phrases appear three times in the passage. 00:06:08.20\00:06:11.97 In verse 15, in verse 16 00:06:12.00\00:06:15.27 and then again, in verse 19 and 20. 00:06:15.30\00:06:17.27 So we want to look at each of those passages 00:06:17.31\00:06:20.11 but first just let's get a little idea. 00:06:20.14\00:06:22.28 Why does he say do you not know? 00:06:22.31\00:06:25.25 Well, in the apostle's writings, 00:06:25.28\00:06:28.08 the apostle Paul, 00:06:28.12\00:06:29.45 fortunately we have so many different books by Paul, 00:06:29.48\00:06:31.75 so we can compare them. 00:06:31.79\00:06:33.12 In his writing, this type of argumentation 00:06:33.15\00:06:36.19 introduces doctrinal ideas 00:06:36.22\00:06:39.29 that he believes every Christian should know. 00:06:39.33\00:06:43.60 Or principles of life that all thinking people 00:06:43.63\00:06:47.00 would recognize and acknowledge. 00:06:47.04\00:06:49.47 So when he says "Don't you know," 00:06:49.50\00:06:51.54 what he is actually doing this referring back to the class 00:06:51.57\00:06:56.81 where they learn to be a Christian. 00:06:56.85\00:06:58.55 You know, we would say the baptismal class, 00:06:58.58\00:07:00.82 you might say the Sabbath school class. 00:07:00.85\00:07:03.12 And those experiences, 00:07:03.15\00:07:05.55 he's saying, do you remember 00:07:05.59\00:07:07.49 what we studied with you in those lessons. 00:07:07.52\00:07:09.89 You know, we should prepare-- 00:07:09.92\00:07:11.26 Insinuating that you ought to know. 00:07:11.29\00:07:12.63 Yeah, you ought to know. 00:07:12.66\00:07:14.00 This is something you should remember, as a Christian. 00:07:14.03\00:07:15.80 This is, this is something 00:07:15.83\00:07:17.80 that every Christian should know. 00:07:17.83\00:07:20.90 Or it's something that is a principle of life 00:07:20.94\00:07:25.24 that is so common 00:07:25.27\00:07:27.08 that everybody would agree and recognize it. 00:07:27.11\00:07:30.45 So an example is found in Romans 6:3, 00:07:30.48\00:07:33.92 for example, when Paul says, "Or do you not know 00:07:33.95\00:07:36.55 that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus 00:07:36.58\00:07:39.45 have been baptized into His death?" 00:07:39.49\00:07:42.02 Oh, when did they learn that? 00:07:42.06\00:07:43.83 Oh, they learn that when before they were baptized. 00:07:43.86\00:07:46.19 Romans 6:16, "Do you not know 00:07:46.23\00:07:48.90 that when you present yourselves 00:07:48.93\00:07:50.27 to someone as slaves for obedience, 00:07:50.30\00:07:52.40 you are slaves of the one whom you obey, 00:07:52.43\00:07:54.87 either of sin resulting in death 00:07:54.90\00:07:56.60 or of obedience, resulting in righteousness?" 00:07:56.64\00:07:59.31 So he uses an example from their Greco-Roman world. 00:07:59.34\00:08:02.31 And he says, 00:08:02.34\00:08:03.68 "Well, you know what happens when you are a slave?" 00:08:03.71\00:08:06.21 Well, of course. A slave has to obey the master. 00:08:06.25\00:08:08.85 Well, whoever you give yourself over to 00:08:08.88\00:08:11.32 that's who you're going to obey like a slave. 00:08:11.35\00:08:14.16 Romans 7:1, "Or do you not know, 00:08:14.19\00:08:16.89 brethren, for I am speaking to those who know the law, 00:08:16.93\00:08:19.59 that the law has jurisdiction 00:08:19.63\00:08:20.96 over a person as long as he lives?" 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.00 Well, of course, every Jew would agree to that. 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.07 They all knew that. 00:08:25.10\00:08:27.14 But it occurs in 1 Corinthians as well. 00:08:27.17\00:08:29.44 1 Corinthians 3:16, 00:08:29.47\00:08:31.54 "Do you not know that you are temple of God 00:08:31.57\00:08:33.41 and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.34 This is something you should know as a Christian. 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.85 1 Corinthians 6:2, "Or do you not know 00:08:37.88\00:08:40.22 that the saints will judge the world? 00:08:40.25\00:08:42.18 If the world is to be judged by you, 00:08:42.22\00:08:43.55 are you incompetent 00:08:43.59\00:08:44.92 to constitute the smallest law courts?" 00:08:44.95\00:08:47.42 So he says, "Oh, where did you find? 00:08:47.46\00:08:49.12 Well, when we did that?" 00:08:49.16\00:08:50.49 Well, we would say, 00:08:50.53\00:08:51.86 when we did that prophecy series. 00:08:51.89\00:08:53.33 We're talking about the second coming of Jesus. 00:08:53.36\00:08:56.63 Chapter 9, verse 13, 00:08:56.67\00:08:58.00 "Do you not know that those who perform 00:08:58.03\00:08:59.40 sacred services, eat the food of the temple, 00:08:59.43\00:09:01.74 those who attend regularly to the altar 00:09:01.77\00:09:03.71 have their own share from alter?" 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.24 So he says, you know, 00:09:05.27\00:09:06.61 this is common knowledge kind of stuff 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.34 that everybody that's a Christian or a Jew 00:09:08.38\00:09:11.25 would know about these things. 00:09:11.28\00:09:12.61 So when he says in 1 Corinthians 6:15. 00:09:12.65\00:09:15.65 "Do you not know 00:09:15.68\00:09:17.02 that your bodies are members of Christ?" 00:09:17.05\00:09:20.02 That is something-- 00:09:20.06\00:09:21.99 That he is emphasizing that we should know. 00:09:22.02\00:09:24.96 We should already know that as a Christian. 00:09:24.99\00:09:27.30 So the first one is there, we just read it in verse 15. 00:09:27.33\00:09:30.07 "Do you not know 00:09:30.10\00:09:31.43 that your bodies are members of Christ? 00:09:31.47\00:09:33.37 Shall I then take the members of Christ 00:09:33.40\00:09:35.27 and make them members of a prostitute? 00:09:35.30\00:09:38.27 Never." 00:09:38.31\00:09:39.64 He says. 00:09:39.67\00:09:41.01 Now in verse 15, Paul states that the Corinthians bodies, 00:09:41.04\00:09:46.08 their own bodies are members of Christ. 00:09:46.11\00:09:50.82 Now the problem is 00:09:50.85\00:09:52.75 we use the word member in several ways. 00:09:52.79\00:09:55.52 You know, we use the member, 00:09:55.56\00:09:56.89 like you're a member of the church. 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.29 He's the member of the church. 00:09:58.33\00:09:59.79 But when we speak of a member of our bodies, 00:09:59.83\00:10:02.96 usually it's a limb or an organ of our bodies. 00:10:03.00\00:10:05.90 Okay. 00:10:05.93\00:10:07.27 That's what we're talking about. 00:10:07.30\00:10:08.64 So he's talking about bodies so he says 00:10:08.67\00:10:11.67 may be he sort of mixing his member, 00:10:11.71\00:10:14.81 his concepts a little bit 00:10:14.84\00:10:16.51 but he says do you not know that our bodies, 00:10:16.54\00:10:21.72 "Do you not know that your bodies 00:10:21.75\00:10:23.35 are members of Christ?" 00:10:23.39\00:10:25.59 So your bodies are members of Christ. 00:10:25.62\00:10:27.79 Now he's already taught 00:10:27.82\00:10:29.79 and Paul teaches we've seen it in Ephesians, 00:10:29.82\00:10:31.96 Paul teaches that our bodies 00:10:31.99\00:10:35.06 that Christ is the-- what of the church? 00:10:35.10\00:10:37.47 Head. He is the head of the church. 00:10:37.50\00:10:39.33 And then the church is His-- 00:10:39.37\00:10:41.27 Body. His body. Okay. 00:10:41.30\00:10:43.00 So we as individual members are as Paul is suggesting here, 00:10:43.04\00:10:48.34 we are so closely identified with Jesus, 00:10:48.38\00:10:52.38 so closely identified we are His people 00:10:52.41\00:10:55.78 that we are described as His limbs and His organs. 00:10:55.82\00:11:00.06 So this leads Paul to a rhetorical question 00:11:00.09\00:11:03.26 that's a shocking question. 00:11:03.29\00:11:05.56 He says, so then 00:11:05.59\00:11:07.03 dare I take the limbs or the organs of Christ 00:11:07.06\00:11:11.27 and make them the limbs or the organs of a prostitute. 00:11:11.30\00:11:16.71 Now it doesn't take much imagination 00:11:16.74\00:11:19.07 to think about what he's talking about here. 00:11:19.11\00:11:21.48 He said, okay to go and have sex with a prostitute 00:11:21.51\00:11:24.98 then you're taking, 00:11:25.01\00:11:26.35 now you are a member of the church. 00:11:26.38\00:11:27.88 And now you are taking the "body of Christ" 00:11:27.92\00:11:32.85 to that pagan temple to sleep with that prostitute. 00:11:32.89\00:11:36.02 Do you suppose that Jesus would go there? 00:11:36.06\00:11:39.89 See that's the kind of thing he's saying. 00:11:39.93\00:11:42.63 Is that really okay to take Jesus to a prostitute? 00:11:42.66\00:11:48.40 Well-- He says, certainly not. 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.27 You know, of course not, 00:11:50.31\00:11:51.64 it's the term in Greek as me genoito 00:11:51.67\00:11:54.01 which is a very strong negative. 00:11:54.04\00:11:57.68 It's like perish the thought, 00:11:57.71\00:12:00.08 don't even think that, God forbidden, 00:12:00.12\00:12:02.62 now the word God is not in the phrase 00:12:02.65\00:12:04.35 but it's just kind of strong-- 00:12:04.39\00:12:06.52 Heaven forbid. Yeah, heaven forbid. 00:12:06.55\00:12:08.32 It's like this strong negation. 00:12:08.36\00:12:11.43 He does not say actually, he does not say join. 00:12:11.46\00:12:16.90 He does not say join, 00:12:16.93\00:12:18.27 shall I take the members of Christ 00:12:18.30\00:12:19.80 and join them to a prostitute actually? 00:12:19.83\00:12:24.84 He says, but rather shall I make them 00:12:24.87\00:12:29.78 members of a prostitute? 00:12:29.81\00:12:31.65 Stressing all the stronger, the concept of union. 00:12:31.68\00:12:34.98 You know the two become one flesh, right? 00:12:35.02\00:12:39.69 And so it's a horrible idea. 00:12:39.72\00:12:42.32 And so he rejects this horrible idea 00:12:42.36\00:12:45.83 by saying no, that's impossible. 00:12:45.86\00:12:49.96 That's verse 15. That's verse 15. 00:12:50.00\00:12:51.77 Now we go the second "Don't you know." 00:12:51.80\00:12:54.00 Yeah, the second "Don't you know" 00:12:54.04\00:12:55.97 is in verse 16 and in verse 17. 00:12:56.00\00:13:00.11 So why don't you read those two verses for us again? 00:13:00.14\00:13:02.51 Okay. Verse 16 and 17. 00:13:02.54\00:13:07.62 "Or do you not know 00:13:07.65\00:13:09.95 that he who is joined to a harlot 00:13:09.98\00:13:12.25 is one body with her? 00:13:12.29\00:13:14.29 'For the two,' he says, 'shall become one flesh.' 00:13:14.32\00:13:17.59 But he who is joined to the Lord 00:13:17.63\00:13:20.23 is one spirit with him." 00:13:20.26\00:13:22.26 Okay. 00:13:22.30\00:13:23.63 So the second "Don't you know" section 00:13:23.67\00:13:26.87 is in these verses, verses 16 and 17. 00:13:26.90\00:13:29.74 It explains or it gives a reason why 00:13:29.77\00:13:32.94 the question in verse 15 00:13:32.97\00:13:37.75 gets that negative answer. 00:13:37.78\00:13:42.45 So the question was, 00:13:42.48\00:13:43.85 "Shall I then take the members of Christ 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.42 and make them members of a prostitute?" 00:13:45.45\00:13:47.86 That was the question that he asked. 00:13:47.89\00:13:49.79 He explains and gives you a reason why 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.93 he gave the answers he did in verse 15. 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.53 Why is it true, Paul that that should never happen? 00:13:54.56\00:13:57.87 He utilizes the concept of Genesis 2:24, 25 00:13:57.90\00:14:02.17 which we've already seen before in these studies. 00:14:02.20\00:14:05.04 To indicate that sexual union turns two-- 00:14:05.07\00:14:08.08 Into one. Into one flesh. 00:14:08.11\00:14:10.81 If they are one, then they are no longer two. 00:14:10.85\00:14:15.38 All right. Yes. 00:14:15.42\00:14:16.75 The two become one. 00:14:16.79\00:14:18.12 This is what led him-- 00:14:18.15\00:14:19.49 So in his eyes they never separate. 00:14:19.52\00:14:21.92 Well, yeah, when you come and join to that 00:14:21.96\00:14:24.66 you become one flesh with that prostitute. 00:14:24.69\00:14:26.06 Yes. Yes. Yeah. 00:14:26.09\00:14:27.70 So they are not separate, they are joined together. 00:14:27.73\00:14:30.47 That is what led him in verse 15 to say 00:14:30.50\00:14:32.50 that a Christian consorting with a prostitute 00:14:32.53\00:14:35.20 was equal to making the limbs or organs of Christ 00:14:35.24\00:14:38.47 into those of a prostitute. 00:14:38.51\00:14:40.44 All right. 00:14:40.48\00:14:41.81 So that's underlining the idea 00:14:41.84\00:14:43.18 that the Christian becomes a part of the prostitute, 00:14:43.21\00:14:45.05 it's the theological concept of the unity of marriage 00:14:45.08\00:14:48.98 that is referred to back in Genesis 2. 00:14:49.02\00:14:52.62 Depicted and symbolized by sexual intercourse. 00:14:52.65\00:14:56.12 If you use it wrongly you become united with that 00:14:56.16\00:14:59.56 which is immoral and you become immoral. 00:14:59.59\00:15:03.13 All right. 00:15:03.16\00:15:04.50 So you see when Paul speaks of this 00:15:04.53\00:15:08.07 and when the Bible speaks of this, 00:15:08.10\00:15:09.74 they say that when you have these relations 00:15:09.77\00:15:12.74 you become one flesh. 00:15:12.77\00:15:15.14 Now that obviously has sexual connotation 00:15:15.18\00:15:19.81 of what happens in sexual intercourse, 00:15:19.85\00:15:22.52 the two joined together. 00:15:22.55\00:15:24.95 But the Bible's sense of this is actually deeper 00:15:24.99\00:15:27.59 than just a concept of physical union. 00:15:27.62\00:15:31.79 There's a psycho social union as well. 00:15:31.83\00:15:37.53 You could say even a spiritual union 00:15:37.57\00:15:39.70 that takes place between people. 00:15:39.73\00:15:41.90 And I like to explain to young people that you know, 00:15:41.94\00:15:47.71 there's some things you can do with anybody. 00:15:47.74\00:15:50.75 I could go on a bicycle ride with you, 00:15:50.78\00:15:53.11 I could go on a bicycle ride with Shelley 00:15:53.15\00:15:55.62 or with anybody, you know. 00:15:55.65\00:15:56.99 We could have a nice meal together at a restaurant, 00:15:57.02\00:15:59.85 we can do a program like this together. 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.09 There is one thing and one thing only 00:16:02.12\00:16:06.06 that I only do with my wife. 00:16:06.09\00:16:07.93 And that's sexual relations. 00:16:07.96\00:16:09.66 So if you take that and use it in a different way, 00:16:09.70\00:16:14.14 you break its symbolism. 00:16:14.17\00:16:16.17 It no longer has that picture of just you and her. 00:16:16.20\00:16:20.44 Now you have made out the problem of, 00:16:20.48\00:16:23.41 you know, linking it with somebody else. 00:16:23.45\00:16:25.68 And you never can forget or go away from that. 00:16:25.71\00:16:30.59 The idea of "casual sex" is an oxymoron. 00:16:30.62\00:16:36.62 Yeah. It's a misnomer. 00:16:36.66\00:16:38.76 There's not such thing as casual sex. 00:16:38.79\00:16:42.26 Sex is this union, this united kind of experience. 00:16:42.30\00:16:46.17 So the Bible says 00:16:46.20\00:16:47.74 it should be reserved for marriage. 00:16:47.77\00:16:49.10 Yes. 00:16:49.14\00:16:50.47 Because it symbolizes that commitment 00:16:50.51\00:16:53.58 that you have made to one another. 00:16:53.61\00:16:54.94 And it's beautiful in that sense 00:16:54.98\00:16:56.31 because actually in sexual intercourse 00:16:56.34\00:16:59.25 you both are having fun. 00:16:59.28\00:17:01.18 You both are having joy, 00:17:01.22\00:17:02.55 you're giving joy and you're receiving joy. 00:17:02.58\00:17:04.92 And you're experiencing it together 00:17:04.95\00:17:06.35 so it's a pretty powerful uniting kind of an experience, 00:17:06.39\00:17:11.69 one that God has specially designed 00:17:11.73\00:17:14.66 for husband and wife alone to experience. 00:17:14.70\00:17:18.37 So Paul says 00:17:18.40\00:17:21.70 that you mustn't do that 00:17:21.74\00:17:25.61 but interestingly he doesn't end 00:17:25.64\00:17:27.64 on that negative note as he talks about. 00:17:27.68\00:17:30.01 Instead he turns towards the positive concept 00:17:30.05\00:17:32.98 of being joined to Christ. 00:17:33.01\00:17:34.35 Amen. 00:17:34.38\00:17:35.72 So in contrast to the one flesh 00:17:35.75\00:17:37.55 that would happen if you went to the prostitute, 00:17:37.59\00:17:40.16 he talks about becoming one spirit with Christ. 00:17:40.19\00:17:45.09 Now some people might get the idea 00:17:45.13\00:17:47.03 that this is sort of dualistic that you have a body, 00:17:47.06\00:17:49.73 you have a spirit, something like that. 00:17:49.76\00:17:53.10 Instead, actually it's a union of the human with the Lord, 00:17:53.13\00:17:56.37 similar in nature of the union between a husband and wife. 00:17:56.40\00:18:00.14 Why is it not dualism? 00:18:00.18\00:18:02.34 Because the body part of the equation 00:18:02.38\00:18:04.58 isn't earthly body 00:18:04.61\00:18:05.95 that is not suppose to be joined to a prostitute. 00:18:05.98\00:18:09.95 Now if Paul were actually talking about dualism, 00:18:09.98\00:18:12.55 this Greek idea that you have an eternal soul, 00:18:12.59\00:18:15.59 eternal spirit and your body is like the prison 00:18:15.62\00:18:18.63 that you're encapsulated in, 00:18:18.66\00:18:21.06 that you get free from when you die. 00:18:21.10\00:18:23.57 If Paul were teaching that, 00:18:23.60\00:18:25.70 he would say as the Corinthians did 00:18:25.73\00:18:27.57 that it does not matter what you do with the body 00:18:27.60\00:18:31.07 as long as the spirit is joined to the Lord. 00:18:31.11\00:18:34.78 And of course, he rejected that idea already. 00:18:34.81\00:18:37.68 Because for Paul, 00:18:37.71\00:18:39.11 resurrection is an important concept. 00:18:39.15\00:18:42.42 As we said before that you dare not sleep around 00:18:42.45\00:18:46.49 because of the resurrection. 00:18:46.52\00:18:48.92 Now when I tell this to students in class 00:18:48.96\00:18:50.96 that great reason for not sleeping around 00:18:50.99\00:18:53.60 as a resurrection, 00:18:53.63\00:18:54.96 they have never heard anything like that before. 00:18:55.00\00:18:56.56 Well, share it in case those people, 00:18:56.60\00:18:59.13 in 25 words or less. 00:18:59.17\00:19:00.50 Can you do that? 00:19:00.54\00:19:01.87 The idea? Okay. Yeah. 00:19:01.90\00:19:03.87 Well, Paul says that you cannot, 00:19:03.91\00:19:07.38 you cannot, you should not just-- 00:19:07.41\00:19:10.01 the Corinthians were saying 00:19:10.05\00:19:11.81 it doesn't matter what you do with the body 00:19:11.85\00:19:13.98 because it's all gonna be destroyed. 00:19:14.02\00:19:16.22 And so it's a eschatology of destruction. 00:19:16.25\00:19:20.46 Okay. 00:19:20.49\00:19:21.82 Paul says, no, no, no, no, no. 00:19:21.86\00:19:24.03 God raised up Jesus Christ from the dead 00:19:24.06\00:19:26.29 and that's what he's gonna do with our bodies as well. 00:19:26.33\00:19:28.73 He raised Him up, He's gonna raise us up. 00:19:28.76\00:19:30.83 That's an eschatology of resurrection. 00:19:30.87\00:19:33.57 So because you're gonna be raised 00:19:33.60\00:19:35.87 and that the resurrection is one of the great proofs 00:19:35.90\00:19:38.94 in the New Testament 00:19:38.97\00:19:40.31 that Paul is not a dualist, he's holistic. 00:19:40.34\00:19:43.31 You don't have a soul, you are a soul. 00:19:43.35\00:19:45.75 And it's important that this body 00:19:45.78\00:19:47.62 is the body that Christ will raise 00:19:47.65\00:19:49.28 when He comes again. 00:19:49.32\00:19:50.65 So it's important what you do with it now. 00:19:50.69\00:19:53.25 So you mustn't use it the wrong way, 00:19:53.29\00:19:55.32 you must use it in the right way. 00:19:55.36\00:19:57.03 The reason you should not sleep around 00:19:57.06\00:19:59.66 is because of the resurrection. 00:19:59.69\00:20:01.53 Yes. 00:20:01.56\00:20:03.00 It's really interesting to see in the New Testament 00:20:03.03\00:20:04.83 where the teaching 00:20:04.87\00:20:06.23 about the resurrection shows up. 00:20:06.27\00:20:07.80 This is one of the most surprising ones 00:20:07.84\00:20:09.80 that most people never think of, 00:20:09.84\00:20:11.77 they've never heard of. 00:20:11.81\00:20:13.14 Well, we better press on here. 00:20:13.17\00:20:14.51 We're running short on time. 00:20:14.54\00:20:15.94 So it's not dualism that he's talking about. 00:20:15.98\00:20:18.41 The joining to the Lord in one spirit, 00:20:18.45\00:20:20.98 read the Holy Spirit is not some allowance 00:20:21.02\00:20:23.99 for joining to a prostitute 00:20:24.02\00:20:26.15 instead it's the opposition to it. 00:20:26.19\00:20:28.29 It is not an emphasis on division but on union. 00:20:28.32\00:20:31.09 We are-- you are either united to a prostitute, 00:20:31.13\00:20:33.83 if you do that you can't be united to the Lord. 00:20:33.86\00:20:36.67 So this is illustrated by the steps in his argument. 00:20:36.70\00:20:39.10 In verse 15, he says, 00:20:39.13\00:20:40.47 "Your bodies are members of Christ. 00:20:40.50\00:20:42.00 Shall I link them to a prostitute? 00:20:42.04\00:20:43.37 No." 00:20:43.41\00:20:44.74 Verse 16, "One joined to a prostitute is one body, 00:20:44.77\00:20:47.51 one joined to the Lord is one spirit." 00:20:47.54\00:20:49.08 Paul begins and ends his argument 00:20:49.11\00:20:51.41 with union with Christ. 00:20:51.45\00:20:53.55 In between is the wrongness of linking up to a prostitute. 00:20:53.58\00:20:58.15 Okay. 00:20:58.19\00:20:59.52 But we have to pause here 00:20:59.55\00:21:00.89 and look at how Paul uses the term perinea 00:21:00.92\00:21:03.09 which is used in our passage in verse 18. 00:21:03.12\00:21:06.19 The term perinea, the sexual immorality, 00:21:06.23\00:21:08.90 is used 25 times in the New Testament. 00:21:08.93\00:21:11.03 Of which 10 appear in Paul's writings. 00:21:11.07\00:21:14.24 He uses the term to refer to incest 00:21:14.27\00:21:17.27 to visiting a prostitute to sex outside of marriage. 00:21:17.31\00:21:21.74 So he's against this kind of sexual immorality. 00:21:21.78\00:21:25.71 Right. 00:21:25.75\00:21:27.08 Yes. 00:21:27.12\00:21:28.45 So let's look at the third "Don't you know" 00:21:28.48\00:21:32.75 Yeah, the third "Don't you know" 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.12 is in verse 18 and 19. 00:21:34.16\00:21:35.49 So why don't you read verse 18 and 19. 00:21:35.52\00:21:37.23 Verses 18 and 19. 00:21:37.26\00:21:40.80 "Flee sexual immorality. 00:21:40.83\00:21:42.66 Every sin that a man does is outside the body, 00:21:42.70\00:21:45.67 but he who commits sexually immorality 00:21:45.70\00:21:48.17 sins against his own body. 00:21:48.20\00:21:50.34 Or do you not know 00:21:50.37\00:21:52.81 that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit 00:21:52.84\00:21:55.11 who is with you, whom you have from God? 00:21:55.14\00:21:59.51 And you are not your own--" 00:21:59.55\00:22:01.58 Right. Yeah, go ahead. 00:22:01.62\00:22:03.79 "For you were bought at a price. 00:22:03.82\00:22:07.36 Therefore glorify God in your body 00:22:07.39\00:22:09.36 and in your spirit which are God's." 00:22:09.39\00:22:12.46 Okay. Which belong to God. All right. 00:22:12.49\00:22:15.66 So it's in verse 18 and 19 that he responds 00:22:15.70\00:22:20.74 and he gives his third "Don't you know". 00:22:20.77\00:22:22.54 As verse 16 supports the argument of verse 15. 00:22:22.57\00:22:27.81 So verse 19 and 20 00:22:27.84\00:22:29.51 support the argument of verse 18. 00:22:29.54\00:22:31.31 Yes. 00:22:31.35\00:22:32.68 In verse 18 the apostle compared the idea of dualism 00:22:32.71\00:22:35.48 where sinning with your body could be argued 00:22:35.52\00:22:38.29 to be separate from your spiritual life. 00:22:38.32\00:22:40.52 Every sin is outside the body, that's their slogan. 00:22:40.56\00:22:42.72 Every sin is outside the body. 00:22:42.76\00:22:44.26 Paul insists, no, 00:22:44.29\00:22:46.09 the one who practices sexual immortality 00:22:46.13\00:22:48.06 sins against their own body. 00:22:48.10\00:22:49.70 Why is that? 00:22:49.73\00:22:51.07 Because in verse 19, the Christian's body 00:22:51.10\00:22:54.60 has two outstanding characteristics 00:22:54.64\00:22:56.91 that are incompatible with sexual immorality. 00:22:56.94\00:23:00.84 These two characteristics 00:23:00.88\00:23:02.24 are the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. 00:23:02.28\00:23:07.42 And you don't belong to yourselves 00:23:07.45\00:23:10.69 because you were redeemed at a price. 00:23:10.72\00:23:14.22 Both of these ideas link our life to something 00:23:14.26\00:23:18.13 that is outside of ourselves. 00:23:18.16\00:23:20.76 Thank you, Jesus. 00:23:20.80\00:23:22.13 Now it first tells us 00:23:22.16\00:23:23.50 where the Godhead condescends to dwell 00:23:23.53\00:23:27.57 making that place holy. 00:23:27.60\00:23:29.60 Surprisingly, that's within our own lives, 00:23:29.64\00:23:33.27 the Holy Spirit comes to dwell. 00:23:33.31\00:23:35.28 Our body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, 00:23:35.31\00:23:37.75 there's some things you don't do in church. 00:23:37.78\00:23:42.02 You don't play basketball in there, you know. 00:23:42.05\00:23:44.72 And you don't bring certain kind of music in there. 00:23:44.75\00:23:46.79 There are some other things you don't do in there 00:23:46.82\00:23:48.59 because it's holy, because it belongs to God. 00:23:48.62\00:23:51.26 Our bodies are like that. 00:23:51.29\00:23:53.29 The second idea describes what Christ did for us 00:23:53.33\00:23:57.43 to bring us to God indicating our great worth 00:23:57.47\00:24:01.40 and the inappropriate nature 00:24:01.44\00:24:03.04 of using someone else's property 00:24:03.07\00:24:05.77 in the way that they don't approve of. 00:24:05.81\00:24:09.04 So this leads Paul to the conclusion 00:24:09.08\00:24:10.98 that you should glorify God in your body, 00:24:11.01\00:24:14.15 should honor Him by obedience 00:24:14.18\00:24:15.88 to His will concerning sexual life. 00:24:15.92\00:24:18.39 Now in conclusion, in conclusion, 00:24:18.42\00:24:22.89 we should notice several things about this passage. 00:24:22.92\00:24:26.29 This passage is filled, it's filled with theology. 00:24:26.33\00:24:31.43 Consider the theological arguments 00:24:31.47\00:24:33.80 that Paul marshals in a mere nine verses 00:24:33.84\00:24:37.51 to deal with the problem of promiscuity. 00:24:37.54\00:24:40.51 First of all, the trinity is opposed 00:24:40.54\00:24:43.71 to sexual immorality. 00:24:43.75\00:24:46.48 The trinity is opposed to sexual immorality, 00:24:46.51\00:24:48.28 God the Father raised Christ and He will raise us. 00:24:48.32\00:24:53.66 So this active resurrection initiates the process 00:24:53.69\00:24:57.13 whereby we can be clean. 00:24:57.16\00:24:59.46 Amen. Right. 00:24:59.49\00:25:00.83 So that's Christ's resurrection. 00:25:00.86\00:25:02.20 God the Father raised Him from the dead, 00:25:02.23\00:25:03.87 there's the Father. 00:25:03.90\00:25:05.23 Christ is the one we are united to 00:25:05.27\00:25:07.97 and who paid the price for our salvation. 00:25:08.00\00:25:10.64 Right. 00:25:10.67\00:25:12.01 And the Holy Spirit dwells in us 00:25:12.04\00:25:14.04 as a temple for the Lord. 00:25:14.08\00:25:15.41 So you have the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. 00:25:15.44\00:25:19.21 Now I tell you what, 00:25:19.25\00:25:20.58 if you look through the New Testament, 00:25:20.62\00:25:21.95 any place you find the trinity is an important place. 00:25:21.98\00:25:26.12 Where the trinity is, 00:25:26.15\00:25:27.56 there's something important going on. 00:25:27.59\00:25:29.72 And the apostle Paul is saying here 00:25:29.76\00:25:31.59 to trinity opposes sexual immorality. 00:25:31.63\00:25:35.30 Paul dismantles the libertine ideas 00:25:35.33\00:25:38.40 that in actuality lead to slavery 00:25:38.43\00:25:40.64 as of the most abject type. 00:25:40.67\00:25:43.14 He counters a materialistic teleology 00:25:43.17\00:25:46.71 that is you know, 00:25:46.74\00:25:48.08 the design of hedonism with a Christological teleology 00:25:48.11\00:25:51.51 of spiritual devotion. 00:25:51.55\00:25:53.78 He replaces an eschatology of destruction 00:25:53.82\00:25:56.72 with an eschatology of resurrection. 00:25:56.75\00:25:59.19 He rejects dualism and affirms holism. 00:25:59.22\00:26:03.76 He hammers on the unity concept and sexual intimacy 00:26:03.79\00:26:07.93 that breaks the oxymoron of casual sex. 00:26:07.96\00:26:11.83 He discredits the idea that one can sin 00:26:11.87\00:26:15.00 and it not affect their spiritual life. 00:26:15.04\00:26:17.87 He presses on the argument 00:26:17.91\00:26:20.01 that we must glorify God in our bodily lives 00:26:20.04\00:26:22.84 because of the grand event of Calvary 00:26:22.88\00:26:25.71 and the consequent indwelling 00:26:25.75\00:26:27.08 of the Holy Spirit in the body temple. 00:26:27.12\00:26:28.88 So if I put it succinctly, libertinism is dismantled, 00:26:28.92\00:26:35.42 teleology is redefined, eschatology is corrected, 00:26:35.46\00:26:40.96 dualism is rejected, the oxymoron is broken, 00:26:41.00\00:26:45.80 the disconnection is discredited 00:26:45.83\00:26:48.24 and the argument is pressed. 00:26:48.27\00:26:51.97 And the thing that we think of, 00:26:52.01\00:26:53.61 you know, when we hear this kind of stuff is, 00:26:53.64\00:26:56.34 wow, why does he use so many theological arguments 00:26:56.38\00:27:02.28 to counter sexual promiscuity? 00:27:02.32\00:27:05.12 You know why? 00:27:05.15\00:27:06.76 Because promiscuity is so strong. 00:27:06.79\00:27:09.92 That he has to bring out all the big guns of theology 00:27:09.96\00:27:13.13 to shoot it down. 00:27:13.16\00:27:14.56 And my, does he put it out there? 00:27:14.60\00:27:16.60 We should be preaching this, 00:27:16.63\00:27:18.07 we should be teaching it to our young people 00:27:18.10\00:27:20.64 so that they can understand that God is serious about sex. 00:27:20.67\00:27:26.07 Yeah. Yeah. 00:27:26.11\00:27:27.44 And he wants us to be faithful and pure. 00:27:27.48\00:27:29.54 Sex is just for marriage. 00:27:29.58\00:27:31.28 And so-- Amen. 00:27:31.31\00:27:32.75 That's 1 Corinthians 6. 00:27:32.78\00:27:34.12 You can see why I already love this passage. 00:27:34.15\00:27:36.25 It's so powerful with so many great ideas. 00:27:36.28\00:27:40.62 And needless to say, 00:27:40.66\00:27:42.62 you certainly unpack it wonderfully. 00:27:42.66\00:27:46.29 Well, it's there and-- 00:27:46.33\00:27:47.66 You know, this is something, this is something 00:27:47.70\00:27:49.03 that is extremely deep. 00:27:49.06\00:27:50.47 Yeah. You know. 00:27:50.50\00:27:51.87 That's the word of God. 00:27:51.90\00:27:53.23 Amen. Amen. 00:27:53.27\00:27:54.74 Well once again, we've gone through a quick 30 minutes. 00:27:54.77\00:27:58.14 We've learned a lot. 00:27:58.17\00:27:59.51 We thank Dr. Sheperd 00:27:59.54\00:28:01.44 and we look forward to our next one. 00:28:01.48\00:28:03.45 Just want you to know 00:28:03.48\00:28:04.81 how much we love you, appreciate you. 00:28:04.85\00:28:06.65 God bless you. 00:28:06.68\00:28:08.02
