Heaven's Point of View. 00:00:01.36\00:00:15.41 Welcome to Heaven's Point of View. 00:00:15.44\00:00:18.65 As you have seen, 00:00:18.71\00:00:20.25 this is a series of the important topics 00:00:20.32\00:00:23.72 related to love, marriage, sex and divorce 00:00:23.75\00:00:27.12 according to the New Testament. 00:00:27.16\00:00:28.69 Our special guest is Dr. Tom Sheperd 00:00:28.72\00:00:33.09 who is a professor of New Testament interpretation 00:00:33.13\00:00:36.00 at Andrews University, so welcome all of you. 00:00:36.03\00:00:39.47 Yeah, thank you... 00:00:39.50\00:00:41.70 Now, from Ephesians 5 is one of the most talked about 00:00:41.74\00:00:49.11 chapters written about this issue, 00:00:49.14\00:00:53.85 and in the book of Ephesians, there is a lot to say 00:00:53.88\00:00:58.09 but this is one of the most talked about, why is that? 00:00:58.12\00:01:02.29 Yes, Ephesians 5 is where we have the passage 00:01:02.32\00:01:06.59 that we will study a lot in this section on Marriage 00:01:06.63\00:01:10.70 that talks about relationships within the household. 00:01:10.73\00:01:14.74 Wives and husbands, children and parents, 00:01:14.77\00:01:18.17 slaves and masters 00:01:18.21\00:01:19.97 and, of course, the one that tends to get the biggest focus 00:01:20.01\00:01:23.21 I think... in discussions 00:01:23.24\00:01:24.78 is the relationship between wives or husbands and wives 00:01:24.81\00:01:28.12 and because Paul talks about submission, 00:01:28.15\00:01:31.62 this is not too popular in our culture today 00:01:31.65\00:01:35.02 and so it becomes an area where people have questions 00:01:35.06\00:01:40.70 and where there's lots of controversy 00:01:40.73\00:01:43.16 so, actually though, before we launch into the study 00:01:43.20\00:01:46.84 of that central passage starting in Ephesians 5:21, 00:01:46.87\00:01:50.91 we need to place the whole passage in its context 00:01:50.94\00:01:54.91 and... in fact the context 00:01:54.94\00:01:57.08 helps to resolve some of the disputes. 00:01:57.11\00:01:59.81 Now, what is the context then? 00:01:59.85\00:02:01.48 So, the context is... 00:02:01.52\00:02:02.98 in our last study we talked about Ephesians 5 in general, 00:02:03.02\00:02:07.09 maybe we will just turn over to Ephesians 5 00:02:07.12\00:02:08.99 in our Bibles up there 00:02:09.02\00:02:10.36 and last time we looked at Ephesians chapter 5 00:02:10.39\00:02:15.76 verses 1 through verse 14, 00:02:15.80\00:02:19.93 and that was when I was with Yvonne Lewis 00:02:19.97\00:02:23.97 for that presentation and we noticed that there were 00:02:24.01\00:02:26.98 kind of... the passage could be divided 00:02:27.04\00:02:30.25 this entry in the beginning of Ephesians 5 00:02:30.28\00:02:33.38 could be divided into two sections of unequal length, 00:02:33.42\00:02:36.95 chapter 5 verses 1 and 2 00:02:36.99\00:02:39.85 and then chapter 5 verses 3 through 14, 00:02:39.89\00:02:43.56 and in chapter 5 verse 1, 00:02:43.63\00:02:48.33 well, why don't you read verses 1 and 2, 00:02:48.36\00:02:50.27 what version of the Bible that you are using? 00:02:50.30\00:02:52.03 I am using the King James Version. 00:02:52.07\00:02:53.94 Yes, and you told me 00:02:53.97\00:02:55.30 you have the Spanish version right next to it. Senez: Yes. 00:02:55.37\00:02:58.81 Tom: That's wonderful. Senez: Absolutely, I have both. 00:02:58.84\00:03:02.28 So, Ephesians 5 verses 1 and 2, why don't you read that? 00:03:02.31\00:03:05.45 5:1 and 2 says, "Be ye therefore 00:03:05.48\00:03:08.38 followers of God, as dear children; 00:03:08.42\00:03:11.25 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, 00:03:11.32\00:03:16.96 and hath given himself for us an offering 00:03:17.03\00:03:21.10 and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling savour. " 00:03:21.16\00:03:29.80 For a sweet-smelling savor... yeah... 00:03:29.84\00:03:31.51 interestingly, in my version, 00:03:31.57\00:03:34.81 I'm reading from the English Standard Version, 00:03:34.84\00:03:36.75 okay, and verse 1 says, "Therefore be imitators of God 00:03:36.78\00:03:41.12 as beloved children," 00:03:41.15\00:03:42.75 I think your version said, "followers" 00:03:42.78\00:03:44.12 Dr. Senez: Yes. 00:03:44.15\00:03:45.49 You know, you're "imitating," you're "following... " 00:03:45.52\00:03:46.86 you're following His pattern 00:03:46.89\00:03:48.22 so, this is Paul's kind of thesis... you could say... 00:03:48.26\00:03:51.59 for, I suppose... this whole... kind of section here 00:03:51.63\00:03:56.20 that you imitate God and Jesus Christ's life of sacrifice 00:03:56.23\00:04:00.77 is presented as the paradigm by which to understand 00:04:00.80\00:04:04.67 that imitative process of how you walk in love, 00:04:04.71\00:04:09.71 then in contrast, 00:04:09.74\00:04:11.71 in verses 3 all the way down through verse 14, 00:04:11.78\00:04:15.95 Paul illustrates what the Christian life 00:04:15.98\00:04:20.09 is not supposed to be 00:04:20.12\00:04:21.46 it is not supposed to be like the dark world around us 00:04:21.49\00:04:26.09 he stress that we cannot participate in the debauchery 00:04:26.13\00:04:30.40 and the evil practices... that we must not imitate them 00:04:30.43\00:04:34.67 since they are not imitators of God. 00:04:34.70\00:04:37.71 Okay, so, he refers there to sexual immorality, 00:04:37.77\00:04:42.04 and impurity, and covetousness, 00:04:42.08\00:04:45.51 and goes on talking about this for some time, 00:04:45.55\00:04:49.08 he actually argues, we could say, from three levels 00:04:49.12\00:04:54.69 he starts with eschatology, 00:04:54.72\00:04:57.99 he says that you mustn't be like them 00:04:58.03\00:05:01.03 because these evil doers will not inherit the kingdom of God. 00:05:01.06\00:05:04.80 That's in verses 5 and 6, then he turns to 00:05:04.83\00:05:08.60 what we might call a salvation history, 00:05:08.64\00:05:12.37 kind of an argument, he says, 00:05:12.41\00:05:14.58 "You used to be in darkness but now, you are in light" 00:05:14.61\00:05:19.18 so there was a change that took place 00:05:19.21\00:05:21.22 you went from darkness to light, 00:05:21.25\00:05:22.98 you went from your past to your present, 00:05:23.02\00:05:25.69 remember where you came from? 00:05:25.72\00:05:27.06 You can't be like those people anymore. 00:05:27.09\00:05:29.52 So, first... eschatology, 00:05:29.56\00:05:32.33 they're not going to inherit the Kingdom of God 00:05:32.36\00:05:34.40 but of course you will because you have given 00:05:34.46\00:05:36.46 your life to Jesus, salvation history, 00:05:36.50\00:05:38.97 remember where you have come from, 00:05:39.00\00:05:41.47 where you are now and if you think of the eschatology, 00:05:41.50\00:05:44.61 you think of where you're going, right? 00:05:44.67\00:05:46.57 Right... so the past, the present and the future, 00:05:46.61\00:05:49.21 and the past does not determine 00:05:49.24\00:05:53.75 or does not define your present 00:05:53.78\00:05:57.35 because of the change that's taking place in your life, 00:05:57.39\00:05:59.99 now, you're looking forward to that future. 00:06:00.02\00:06:02.62 Then he also argues... that was salvation history 00:06:02.66\00:06:07.03 is kind of in verse 8 and then 00:06:07.06\00:06:08.83 he argues from morality in verses 12 and 13 00:06:08.86\00:06:13.00 he talks of their shameful deeds that are exposed by light. 00:06:13.03\00:06:19.04 So, basically, in this passage we have this sharp contrast 00:06:19.07\00:06:24.51 between the Christian and the world around them, 00:06:24.55\00:06:27.65 very strong difference, there's an interesting... 00:06:27.68\00:06:30.72 Paul doesn't use the term here, 00:06:30.75\00:06:32.25 but there's an interesting concept from the ancient world 00:06:32.29\00:06:35.56 that's interesting to understand 00:06:35.62\00:06:38.53 and it plays into this whole idea, 00:06:38.59\00:06:41.46 it's the idea of conscience, 00:06:41.50\00:06:42.83 now, we usually think of conscience as kind of a... 00:06:42.86\00:06:47.70 like an internal compass or clock, that says 00:06:47.74\00:06:52.64 when you take that cookie you shouldn't have taken... 00:06:52.67\00:06:55.81 "no... you shouldn't have, 00:06:55.84\00:06:57.18 now you'd better go walk two miles" 00:06:57.21\00:06:58.55 or something like that... 00:06:58.58\00:06:59.91 but, for the ancients, at least in some respects, 00:06:59.95\00:07:05.45 they thought of conscience as something external, 00:07:05.49\00:07:07.79 so, it's sometimes translated not as conscience 00:07:07.82\00:07:11.83 but as consciousness, so you're conscious 00:07:11.86\00:07:15.50 of the values of the people around you 00:07:15.53\00:07:19.13 of your primary group. 00:07:19.20\00:07:20.94 So people's opinion of you was part of their conscience. 00:07:20.97\00:07:24.37 Yeah, the people around you would be part of your conscience 00:07:24.41\00:07:27.81 and you would reflect, 00:07:27.84\00:07:29.74 you would take on the values of that group around you. 00:07:29.78\00:07:33.01 that's a pretty strong idea that is still around us today 00:07:33.05\00:07:36.22 we see people wearing designer clothes... 00:07:36.25\00:07:37.95 why do they wear those? 00:07:37.99\00:07:39.32 Because everybody else is wearing those clothes 00:07:39.35\00:07:41.42 and young people very much want to be like that. 00:07:41.46\00:07:43.63 Well, Paul... and Peter does this... 00:07:43.66\00:07:46.70 but Paul has some of these... to reflect some of these ideas 00:07:46.73\00:07:49.10 in some of his other passages too, 00:07:49.13\00:07:50.57 has this idea that you are now conscious of God. 00:07:50.60\00:07:53.37 You're conscious of a different set of values 00:07:53.44\00:07:56.17 that have changed your life 00:07:56.20\00:07:58.01 and you're not following that old way of the world, 00:07:58.04\00:08:01.11 it's like you don't see them anymore, 00:08:01.14\00:08:04.15 they're not the primary group for you, 00:08:04.18\00:08:07.12 so it's kind of interesting that this whole idea of 00:08:07.15\00:08:11.65 the walk that's involved 00:08:11.69\00:08:15.36 is based out of an idea of being different from the world 00:08:15.39\00:08:21.36 and following Jesus, so, thinking about that, 00:08:21.40\00:08:26.40 we should not be surprised that the household rules 00:08:26.43\00:08:30.31 that the Apostle Paul is going to present to us 00:08:30.34\00:08:34.14 follow the ways of the Scriptures, 00:08:34.18\00:08:39.28 they link into God's values and they eschew or leave behind 00:08:39.31\00:08:44.19 or reject the world's ways, so we shouldn't be surprised 00:08:44.22\00:08:48.99 if his household rules actually are at odds 00:08:49.02\00:08:51.96 with the typical household structure 00:08:51.99\00:08:54.06 of the Greco-Roman world 00:08:54.10\00:08:55.43 and we're going to see something interesting here 00:08:55.46\00:08:57.70 when we study all through this 00:08:57.73\00:08:59.07 that he uses some of the same categories 00:08:59.10\00:09:03.44 as people of his day... some of the same... groupings... 00:09:03.47\00:09:09.64 there are wives and husbands, there are children and parents, 00:09:09.68\00:09:12.68 there are slaves and masters, these were groups of people 00:09:12.71\00:09:15.68 that were all in the Greco-Roman-world household 00:09:15.72\00:09:18.39 but he changes their roles, he modifies what they're like 00:09:18.42\00:09:24.69 and actually the people that he spoke the most to... 00:09:24.73\00:09:27.96 are husbands and slaves, 00:09:28.00\00:09:29.33 he has more to say to them than to anybody else 00:09:29.36\00:09:31.30 probably because they had the most to change 00:09:31.33\00:09:33.44 and some of the others were just... like they had been 00:09:33.47\00:09:37.61 so, this really brings us now to our passage of study 00:09:37.64\00:09:41.78 for our discussion today 00:09:41.81\00:09:43.61 and that's Ephesians 5 verses 15 through 21 00:09:43.65\00:09:48.88 Should we read it now then? Yes, please. 00:09:48.92\00:09:54.12 Okay, 5:15 to 21, "See then that ye walk 00:09:54.16\00:10:00.40 circumspectly, not as fools, 00:10:00.43\00:10:03.60 but as wise. 00:10:03.63\00:10:05.40 Redeeming the time, 00:10:05.43\00:10:07.47 because the days are evil. 00:10:07.50\00:10:10.04 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding 00:10:10.11\00:10:15.74 what the will of the Lord is. 00:10:15.78\00:10:18.61 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; 00:10:18.65\00:10:23.79 but be filled with the Spirit; 00:10:23.82\00:10:27.22 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns 00:10:27.26\00:10:31.29 and spiritual songs, singing and making melody 00:10:31.33\00:10:35.33 in your heart to the Lord; 00:10:35.36\00:10:37.40 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father 00:10:37.43\00:10:43.04 in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 00:10:43.07\00:10:46.54 Submitting yourselves one to another 00:10:46.57\00:10:49.98 in the fear of God. " 00:10:50.01\00:10:52.28 Hmmm... hmmm... okay... 00:10:52.31\00:10:54.52 Now, what does Paul mean here by the issue of "walk?" 00:10:54.55\00:10:59.85 What does that...? 00:10:59.89\00:11:01.22 Yeah, it's kind of an interesting term, 00:11:01.26\00:11:02.99 it actually borrows... it borrows from Judaism 00:11:03.02\00:11:06.63 and it is a term that... for the Jews the idea of "walk," 00:11:06.66\00:11:14.90 the Hebrew word is "Halakha... " Ha la ha... 00:11:14.97\00:11:21.54 and Halakha is an idea of... 00:11:21.58\00:11:25.31 it's the verb or the word that means walk... 00:11:25.35\00:11:29.05 now, what they had in the Old Testament stories 00:11:29.08\00:11:32.75 that they called, "haggadah," 00:11:32.79\00:11:34.42 which basically means... narratives... 00:11:34.46\00:11:36.76 but the commands of the Old Testament, 00:11:36.79\00:11:38.86 they're called "halakha" 00:11:38.89\00:11:40.23 and the halakha word... these commands... 00:11:40.26\00:11:42.93 that show you how you should live your life, 00:11:42.96\00:11:46.57 and I suppose, you know, you teach a child 00:11:46.60\00:11:50.14 how to walk... and maybe they got it 00:11:50.17\00:11:51.84 from some of those things, 00:11:51.87\00:11:53.21 but the idea of the commands and how you live your life 00:11:53.24\00:11:57.21 so, it's linked up with the idea of a way of life. 00:11:57.25\00:12:02.35 Now, interestingly enough, verse 15... 00:12:02.38\00:12:05.09 before we come to the word "walk" 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.19 it has the word "look" look... 00:12:08.22\00:12:11.19 and that's a word that sometimes is left out of translations 00:12:11.23\00:12:18.53 unfortunately, though, you'll see sometimes 00:12:18.60\00:12:21.04 they put it in the King James, I like that you said, "behold" 00:12:21.07\00:12:24.24 Senez: yes or "see" Tom: see... 00:12:24.27\00:12:26.41 and the concept of "behold" in the stories of the Old Testament 00:12:26.47\00:12:33.31 is an idea of a changed point of view or perspective, 00:12:33.35\00:12:37.32 it's as though... here at 3ABN we're taping with cameras, 00:12:37.35\00:12:41.32 it's as though... you switch cameras? 00:12:41.36\00:12:43.26 you went from one camera to the other camera, 00:12:43.29\00:12:45.19 you have a different perspective or point of view 00:12:45.23\00:12:47.66 you're now looking from a different angle, 00:12:47.70\00:12:49.86 so Paul may have linked into that 00:12:49.90\00:12:53.50 from his Hebrew background, and said, "look" or "behold" 00:12:53.54\00:12:56.60 it's like, "Wait, you need this different perspective" 00:12:56.64\00:12:59.71 and we, already have been saying 00:12:59.74\00:13:01.68 that in Ephesians 5:1-14, Paul has suggested and stated 00:13:01.71\00:13:07.28 that the Christian is... got a different point of view, 00:13:07.32\00:13:12.85 conscious of God, 00:13:12.89\00:13:14.36 the ways of the world have been left behind, 00:13:14.39\00:13:16.69 the Christian is now living for God, and so... 00:13:16.73\00:13:19.66 this "look carefully" could tie into that. 00:13:19.69\00:13:22.53 It could also tie into somewhat of the eschatological viewpoint 00:13:22.56\00:13:27.07 that Jesus provides in places like Mark 15 and Matthew 24 00:13:27.10\00:13:30.84 when he says, "keep watch, be on your guard 00:13:30.87\00:13:34.28 because the Master will come back when you're not expecting" 00:13:34.31\00:13:37.95 so Paul is giving them a warning 00:13:37.98\00:13:40.92 there's probably some tie into eschatology here, 00:13:40.98\00:13:43.39 they certainly tie into the idea of... 00:13:43.45\00:13:46.05 the Jewish idea of the way you live, the walk, 00:13:46.09\00:13:49.62 and so, he says, 00:13:49.66\00:13:50.99 "be careful how you walk not as unwise but as wise" 00:13:51.03\00:13:55.86 he continues to call for this contrast from the world 00:13:55.90\00:14:00.80 and he continues the eschatological note as well 00:14:00.84\00:14:04.97 because in verse 16 he talks about 00:14:05.01\00:14:08.21 the word of "redeeming the time" 00:14:08.24\00:14:11.38 now, my translation says, 00:14:11.41\00:14:13.95 "Making the best use of the time" 00:14:14.02\00:14:15.42 I kind of like the "redeeming the time" better. 00:14:15.45\00:14:17.59 It's got a little more ring to it. 00:14:17.62\00:14:19.42 "Redeem" has the focus of the shortness of time 00:14:19.45\00:14:22.76 in the last days and how you have to be 00:14:22.79\00:14:26.19 really careful to make the most of the time, it's so short, 00:14:26.26\00:14:30.20 it's so precious for developing the right kind of character 00:14:30.23\00:14:34.17 it's like finding water in the desert. 00:14:34.20\00:14:36.91 Now, how does Paul continue the idea of a "careful walk" 00:14:36.94\00:14:42.44 in verses 17 and 18? 00:14:42.48\00:14:45.75 All right, why don't we read those verses again 00:14:45.78\00:14:47.58 just so everybody has the context and understands it well. 00:14:47.62\00:14:50.35 "Wherefore be ye not unwise, 00:14:50.39\00:14:55.42 but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 00:14:55.46\00:15:01.26 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; 00:15:01.30\00:15:07.10 but be filled with the Spirit... " 00:15:07.14\00:15:10.81 Okay, so he continues, he has a set of 00:15:10.84\00:15:15.21 four commands, we call them in Greek, 00:15:15.24\00:15:19.51 we speak of "imperative" we have that in English too, 00:15:19.55\00:15:21.48 "Do this, don't do that" 00:15:21.55\00:15:22.88 so, he has these four imperatives 00:15:22.92\00:15:25.92 two of them are negative and two of them are positive, 00:15:25.95\00:15:29.86 which continues again this whole contrast 00:15:29.92\00:15:33.13 between the worldly way and the Christian way. 00:15:33.16\00:15:35.23 so, on the negative, he says, "don't be foolish, 00:15:35.26\00:15:39.87 that's what the worldly way is" it's the foolish way, 00:15:39.90\00:15:43.37 he says, "Don't be drunk with wine" 00:15:43.41\00:15:46.01 now I can hear the Adventists saying, "Amen" 00:15:46.04\00:15:48.74 as we teach people not to use alcohol, I'm thankful we do, 00:15:48.78\00:15:55.68 it's been such a blessing in my life 00:15:55.72\00:15:58.75 and in my family not to use alcoholic beverages 00:15:58.79\00:16:02.72 and if I take off my "Theologian hat" 00:16:02.76\00:16:05.29 and put my "Public Health hat" on, 00:16:05.33\00:16:07.80 a little bit... for a moment, alcohol is actually a sedative 00:16:07.83\00:16:11.83 and it has the effect of putting the mind to sleep 00:16:11.87\00:16:15.70 it starts with the frontal area where judgment is 00:16:15.74\00:16:19.54 so, sometimes people will drink 00:16:19.57\00:16:21.31 because they want to be uninhabited 00:16:21.34\00:16:23.41 and their inhibitions are put to sleep, 00:16:23.45\00:16:25.51 if you drink too much it just keeps working backwards 00:16:25.55\00:16:27.65 and it works it's way down down and it will eventually kill you. 00:16:27.68\00:16:30.69 It's an anesthetic but not a good one 00:16:30.75\00:16:33.99 because the distance between what would put you to sleep 00:16:34.02\00:16:37.73 and what will kill you is not very far. 00:16:37.76\00:16:39.33 The medical doctors don't like that kind of stuff, 00:16:39.36\00:16:41.40 so he says, "Don't be drunk with wine," 00:16:41.43\00:16:42.90 he says, "Don't be foolish, 00:16:42.93\00:16:44.27 instead understand the will of God... the Lord" 00:16:44.30\00:16:47.97 that's an idea of wisdom, 00:16:48.00\00:16:49.87 he says, "Don't be drunk with wine 00:16:49.90\00:16:51.74 but instead be filled with the Spirit" 00:16:51.77\00:16:53.58 so the Spirit of God is 00:16:53.61\00:16:55.34 is supposed to take the place of those things 00:16:55.38\00:16:57.48 and where alcohol puts you to sleep, 00:16:57.51\00:16:59.31 the Holy Spirit keeps you awake. 00:16:59.35\00:17:01.52 The Holy Spirit fills you with joy 00:17:01.55\00:17:03.69 where alcohol has a false joy 00:17:03.72\00:17:05.55 but the Holy Spirit has the true joy 00:17:05.62\00:17:07.59 that He gives to your life. 00:17:07.62\00:17:08.96 So Paul is trying to continue with this contrast 00:17:08.99\00:17:11.49 between the old and the new... the day and the darkness 00:17:11.53\00:17:15.23 and so... this is part of his line of thought. 00:17:15.26\00:17:18.67 That's exactly right and that brings us down 00:17:18.70\00:17:22.07 to verses 19 to 21, 00:17:22.10\00:17:25.87 why don't you read those verses for us. 00:17:25.94\00:17:28.71 "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns 00:17:28.74\00:17:32.21 and spiritual songs, singing and making melody 00:17:32.25\00:17:35.68 in your heart to the Lord; 00:17:35.72\00:17:37.92 Giving thanks always for all things unto God 00:17:37.95\00:17:42.19 and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;" 00:17:42.22\00:17:46.49 And verse 21... 00:17:46.53\00:17:47.96 "Submitting yourself one to another in the fear of God. " 00:17:48.00\00:17:53.64 Okay, this is an interesting passage 00:17:53.67\00:17:57.24 some Bible translations 00:17:57.27\00:17:59.91 lists these verses as a further series of commands, 00:17:59.94\00:18:03.58 they will say, "Speak to one... or address one another 00:18:03.61\00:18:07.78 in Psalms and hymns, sing, 00:18:07.82\00:18:09.88 make melody in your heart, give thanks to God, 00:18:09.92\00:18:12.69 submit to one another out of reverence for Christ" 00:18:12.72\00:18:15.46 Some will do it that way... now the King James doesn't... 00:18:15.49\00:18:19.09 and my version also does not, 00:18:19.16\00:18:21.46 it leaves it in what we call "participles" 00:18:21.50\00:18:25.23 addressing and singing and making melody 00:18:25.27\00:18:28.87 and giving thanks and submitting. 00:18:28.90\00:18:30.51 So they put it in that kind of a format, 00:18:30.57\00:18:33.27 these five terms, speaking, singing, making melody 00:18:33.31\00:18:41.85 giving thanks, and submitting. 00:18:41.88\00:18:44.95 In Greek, they're all five of them... participles, 00:18:44.99\00:18:48.32 now, "Participle" is simply a verbal adjective, 00:18:48.36\00:18:51.59 when we take a word and put the "ing" on the end of it 00:18:51.63\00:18:56.56 in English, like "run" becomes "running," 00:18:56.60\00:18:59.57 "go" becomes "going," 00:18:59.60\00:19:01.94 those are, what we call, present participles, 00:19:01.97\00:19:06.07 and they express actions but they could also say, 00:19:06.11\00:19:10.18 "Oh did you see that running man" 00:19:10.21\00:19:11.75 so they have an adjectival kind of a sense to them, 00:19:11.78\00:19:15.92 now, the problem for us in translating 00:19:15.95\00:19:19.82 from Greek to English was that the Greek participle was 00:19:19.85\00:19:22.36 very flexible... very flexible, 00:19:22.39\00:19:25.46 God must love participles, He made so many of them. 00:19:25.49\00:19:27.86 Smile... 00:19:27.90\00:19:29.93 But students in my classroom 00:19:29.96\00:19:32.23 sometimes will be a little challenged 00:19:32.27\00:19:33.90 because, participles can be used in a whole variety of ways, 00:19:33.94\00:19:39.57 they can be used as substantives like a noun, 00:19:39.61\00:19:41.84 they can be used as an adjective and they can be used adverbially 00:19:41.88\00:19:45.85 so... and it's like about 10 to 15 different ways 00:19:45.88\00:19:48.88 that they can be used, 00:19:48.92\00:19:50.25 they're trying to figure out exactly 00:19:50.29\00:19:52.15 what kind of participle is this, 00:19:52.19\00:19:54.22 so it's always the student scratching his head, 00:19:54.26\00:19:56.59 and the student makes some kind of choice 00:19:56.62\00:19:58.29 and then, lo and behold, 00:19:58.33\00:20:00.70 it turns out it is the wrong choice, 00:20:00.73\00:20:03.87 it looks like, anyway, 00:20:03.90\00:20:05.23 at least in terms of what the Professor thought, okay. 00:20:05.27\00:20:07.47 so, we want to look at these five participles 00:20:07.50\00:20:10.21 and one of our main interests is that the very last one 00:20:10.24\00:20:14.18 is the word, "submitting. " 00:20:14.21\00:20:17.41 That's the one that is problematic for some people. 00:20:17.45\00:20:19.98 Yes, that's the beginning one 00:20:20.02\00:20:22.58 for the whole instruction to the household... see... 00:20:22.62\00:20:25.72 and so they land on that one and they worry about that one 00:20:25.75\00:20:30.63 but we don't want to worry about it yet, 00:20:30.66\00:20:32.49 we want to try to get it... understand it... okay... 00:20:32.56\00:20:35.46 so the first one of the participles 00:20:35.50\00:20:38.50 is the word "addressing" or "speaking" 00:20:38.53\00:20:41.44 okay, and the last one is the word, "submitting" 00:20:41.47\00:20:45.04 now, these two participles of the five, 00:20:45.07\00:20:49.21 the first one and the last one, deal with relationships 00:20:49.24\00:20:52.71 between believers, okay, 00:20:52.75\00:20:55.48 speaking to one another, he says, 00:20:55.52\00:20:57.45 and then, he says, "submitting to one another" 00:20:57.49\00:21:01.42 so, the first and the last deal with relationships 00:21:01.46\00:21:05.36 the second, the third, and the fourth, 00:21:05.39\00:21:09.30 deal with the Christian's relationship to God, 00:21:09.33\00:21:13.74 singing, singing praises and giving thanks, 00:21:13.77\00:21:18.11 the first four, 00:21:18.14\00:21:22.38 one was about addressing one another, 00:21:22.41\00:21:25.65 and then... singing and praising and giving thanks, 00:21:25.68\00:21:28.55 the first four are about communication 00:21:28.58\00:21:31.42 I'm sure, you as a Counselor, 00:21:31.45\00:21:33.96 are really... you're big on the idea of communication 00:21:33.99\00:21:36.73 these four... first four... about communication, 00:21:36.76\00:21:39.83 the unique... last participle... the fifth one, 00:21:39.86\00:21:42.96 is not about communication, 00:21:43.00\00:21:45.30 instead, it's about power relationships 00:21:45.33\00:21:48.97 within the community, and... 00:21:49.00\00:21:51.37 But it's interesting because you cannot submit to anything 00:21:51.41\00:21:55.34 unless you have clear communication 00:21:55.38\00:21:57.98 and understanding of each other in a relationship. 00:21:58.01\00:22:00.72 Yeah... or... if you don't, it becomes the basis of fear 00:22:00.75\00:22:05.55 or misunderstanding. Senez: Exactly. 00:22:05.59\00:22:07.22 you know, that there are children 00:22:07.26\00:22:08.82 who submit to their parents because they're afraid, 00:22:08.86\00:22:11.06 they don't understand what the father is doing, 00:22:11.09\00:22:13.19 but they're afraid of that that spanking 00:22:13.23\00:22:16.46 or some kind of punishment that they will get. 00:22:16.50\00:22:18.87 So, yeah, communication, they are interlinked, 00:22:18.90\00:22:21.24 there's an interlinkage between them. 00:22:21.27\00:22:23.07 Now, all five of these participial phrases, 00:22:23.10\00:22:26.11 are phrases in the life that is oriented with God and 00:22:26.17\00:22:32.25 Christ as the reference point, 00:22:32.28\00:22:33.62 the five participles also illustrate a thankful, 00:22:33.65\00:22:39.12 joyous and solemn demeanor. 00:22:39.15\00:22:42.19 Now, how... the question is, you see, 00:22:42.22\00:22:45.39 how does the Christian get that? 00:22:45.43\00:22:48.56 How do you become a singing Christian 00:22:48.60\00:22:52.73 instead of a complaining one, yeah. 00:22:52.77\00:22:56.67 How do you become a thankful Christian 00:22:56.71\00:23:00.48 instead of a complaining or downcast or discouraged one? 00:23:00.54\00:23:05.45 and how did you learn how to address each other with psalms 00:23:05.51\00:23:09.55 and hymns and how do you learn how to submit to each other? 00:23:09.58\00:23:13.59 Well, you see, all of these are participles, 00:23:13.62\00:23:18.99 none of them are what we would call indicative verbs, 00:23:19.03\00:23:23.20 none of them are verbs that you'd say, 00:23:23.23\00:23:25.53 "That's the main verb in this sentence" 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.77 and if I just started the sentence by saying... 00:23:27.80\00:23:30.47 addressing one another in psalms and hymns, 00:23:30.51\00:23:32.94 singing and making melody, giving thanks, submitting... 00:23:32.97\00:23:36.78 you say, "Yes, that's all very nice" 00:23:36.81\00:23:39.81 but those are all partial clauses 00:23:39.85\00:23:42.35 that's a subsidiary clause, 00:23:42.38\00:23:43.99 where is the main verb, where is the main idea? 00:23:44.02\00:23:46.42 The main idea is actually in verse 18, 00:23:46.45\00:23:51.06 so read verse 18 again. 00:23:51.09\00:23:53.13 "And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; 00:23:53.16\00:23:59.43 but be filled with the Spirit... " 00:23:59.47\00:24:02.07 Yes, now this is an imperative but Paul is challenging them 00:24:02.10\00:24:07.08 he says, "Be filled with the Spirit" 00:24:07.11\00:24:09.31 and then the actions... the five participles 00:24:09.34\00:24:14.38 are actually how the expression of 00:24:14.42\00:24:18.65 "being filled with the Spirit" is seen in life, 00:24:18.69\00:24:21.06 when a person is filled with the Spirit... what happens? 00:24:21.09\00:24:24.89 They address one another in psalms and hymns, 00:24:24.96\00:24:27.60 they sing songs to God and make melody in the heart, 00:24:27.63\00:24:31.47 they give thanks to God and they submit to one another. 00:24:31.53\00:24:35.34 You see, it is impossible, 00:24:35.37\00:24:39.34 it is impossible to fulfill 00:24:39.37\00:24:42.51 this household code, 00:24:42.54\00:24:44.15 it is impossible to be 00:24:44.18\00:24:46.31 the singing Christian instead of the complaining Christian, 00:24:46.35\00:24:49.28 the only way that is possible is with the Spirit, 00:24:49.32\00:24:52.62 the Holy Spirit in our life. 00:24:52.65\00:24:54.59 Without the Spirit, we don't have it. 00:24:54.62\00:24:57.36 You know, I like that... 00:24:57.39\00:24:58.79 I heard this a while back from my mother-in-law 00:24:58.86\00:25:01.70 that 3ABN was having people pray at 7 and 7... 00:25:01.73\00:25:04.07 and you're still praying... it's still going on? 00:25:04.10\00:25:06.20 Senez: Yes. Tom: You pray at 7 and 7... 00:25:06.23\00:25:07.77 my wife has set up a little alarm clock that goes off 00:25:07.80\00:25:10.91 for those are times... times that we're home 00:25:10.94\00:25:12.71 and so... if we're at breakfast or something, 00:25:12.74\00:25:14.48 we say, "Well, it's time to pray" 00:25:14.54\00:25:15.88 and if we have our grandchildren with us, 00:25:15.91\00:25:18.25 then we've already said prayer for the breakfast 00:25:18.28\00:25:21.35 or prayer for the evening meal, 00:25:21.38\00:25:22.72 we say, "Oh, it's time to pray again" 00:25:22.75\00:25:26.25 and we're praying for the Holy Spirit 00:25:26.29\00:25:29.66 to touch our lives... to touch other people's lives, 00:25:29.69\00:25:32.69 it's the Holy Spirit that must imbue our homes 00:25:32.73\00:25:36.73 in order for this thankfulness to be seen. 00:25:36.77\00:25:40.74 And there's one more characteristic 00:25:40.80\00:25:43.37 that I want to note here, one last note on this prelude 00:25:43.41\00:25:46.98 to the instructions to the Christian home 00:25:47.01\00:25:50.48 and that is that the Trinity is active 00:25:50.55\00:25:53.98 in this whole idea, okay, 00:25:54.02\00:25:56.79 the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit 00:25:56.85\00:26:01.62 are active in this whole experience of becoming, 00:26:01.69\00:26:07.86 what shall I say, of walking the walk, 00:26:07.90\00:26:11.63 following the Christian walk, because if you notice here... 00:26:11.67\00:26:15.20 look at verse 18, "Do not get drunk with wine, 00:26:15.24\00:26:18.04 for that is debauchery, but be filled with... " 00:26:18.07\00:26:20.81 Senez: the Spirit Tom: he's filled with the Spirit 00:26:20.84\00:26:23.14 that's got to be the Holy Spirit 00:26:23.18\00:26:24.51 Senez: Right, Tom: Right... "Be filled with the Spirit, 00:26:24.55\00:26:26.35 addressing one another in Psalms and Hymns 00:26:26.41\00:26:29.95 and Spiritual Songs singing and making melody 00:26:29.98\00:26:34.12 to the Lord with your heart, the Lord here being, 00:26:34.16\00:26:38.26 the Lord Jesus Christ, okay, 00:26:38.29\00:26:40.80 Then verse 20, "Giving thanks always 00:26:40.83\00:26:44.10 and for everything to God the Father 00:26:44.13\00:26:47.17 in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;" 00:26:47.20\00:26:50.21 so there you have reference to the Spirit of God, 00:26:50.24\00:26:52.84 you have reference to the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:26:52.87\00:26:57.45 and you have reference to the Father. 00:26:57.48\00:27:02.52 So, all of these are involved in this whole process 00:27:02.55\00:27:06.65 wherever you see the Trinity in the New Testament 00:27:06.69\00:27:10.76 and the Trinity comes in various places, 00:27:10.83\00:27:12.96 most often we think of, you know, 00:27:12.99\00:27:14.60 "I baptize you in the name of the Father, 00:27:14.63\00:27:16.36 the Son and the Holy Spirit... " 00:27:16.40\00:27:17.73 As if they were different ranks. 00:27:17.77\00:27:19.10 Well, but they're... 00:27:19.13\00:27:21.30 the Father is usually listed first, 00:27:21.34\00:27:23.64 this is true, but we notice here, 00:27:23.67\00:27:25.91 the Spirit is listed first in this passage 00:27:25.94\00:27:27.98 and sometimes Jesus might be... 00:27:28.04\00:27:29.38 so, they work together to bring us God's grace, 00:27:29.44\00:27:32.41 but wherever these three are working together, 00:27:32.45\00:27:35.08 there, we have something important happening 00:27:35.12\00:27:37.72 and that's happening in our homes today. 00:27:37.75\00:27:40.26 Wow! well, it's been a pleasure to hear your thoughts 00:27:40.29\00:27:45.09 about this topic, 00:27:45.13\00:27:46.46 thank you Dr. Sheperd for your thoughts on this, 00:27:46.49\00:27:49.36 my friends, the time is running out 00:27:49.43\00:27:52.77 but we are happy that you have been with us 00:27:52.80\00:27:55.37 on this important topic 00:27:55.40\00:27:56.77 and we hope and I'm sure that in the future ones, 00:27:56.81\00:27:59.37 you are certainly going to have an excellent experience 00:27:59.41\00:28:03.35 in understanding the "Ephesians" topic 00:28:03.38\00:28:06.78 on this issue that we have been discussing here, 00:28:06.82\00:28:09.35 I hope that you will see us next time. 00:28:09.38\00:28:11.92
