saw this gift grossly abused

by men proclaiming
to be prophets of God

and all the while they were
drawing glory to themselves.

God's truth about this gift,

not just what I've heard
someone else say about it.

give you a definition.

The gifts of the Holy
Spirit are spiritual endowments

beyond our natural mind and
founded on the omnipotent God

we serve. These gifts
are given to the church

to demonstrate the authority
of the believer. That's us.

Various efforts have been
made to classify, group, or show

how the nine gifts of the
Holy Spirit actually complement

one another. As a whole,
we can see how these gifts

fortify, guard, and edify
the early church in the absence

of the revealed New Testament.
They enjoyed miraculous

knowledge and the wisdom to
apply it with understanding.

They had faith that
could remove mountains

healing. They could confirm the

and false teacher in the absence

the discerning of the spirits.

Now, this is a good
place to stop and let you know

pastor, I heard this expression

from people that
were not in this movement.

Well, the gift of tongues is
the least of the gifts because

it is listed last. Excuse me,

the gift of
interpretation is listed last.

So if you get a chance
to say this to somebody,

because you might end up being

embarrassed over this.
And besides that, in the

12th chapter of Corinthians
he lists the gift of tongues

and the gift of interpretation
last. And it can't be the least

of any of them because in the
13th chapter of I Corinthians

it plainly tell us that there
is faith, hope, and love - and

love is listed last but
Paul says love is the greatest.

So we have an
expression in Alabama:

don't tell anybody that the

tongues is the least of the
gifts because it's listed last,

with three gifts in each one.

First are the gifts
to speak. This includes

Then there are the gifts to do.

Now let's look at
the gift to speak.

First, there is the gift of
prophecy. The gift of prophecy.

says: "To another prophecy. "

Now let me give you a

The gift of prophecy is by
special ability that God gives

to members of the body of Christ
to receive and to communicate

an immediate message
of God to His people,

among God's people,

or any one of His

through a divinely
anointed utterance.

Now here are two Biblical
truths concerning prophecy.

Truth number one: in
the centuries immediately

preceding the first advent of
Christ, the manifestation of the

gift of prophecy
almost totally disappeared.

Prophecy is largely rejected
and despised by Christendom

what they don't understand

Prophecy has been surrounded by

most important spiritual gift.

Paul considers it vital to
the building up of God's church.

When Moses was finally convinced
that God wanted him to delegate

authority to a larger number,

You see two of the elders failed
to show up at the meeting.

The Spirit of God fell on the

Spirit came also upon the
two who remained in the camp

who began to prophesy as well.
Everyone wanted all of them

to stop, uncomfortable
at the direct voice of God

and jealous for Moses to be
the uniqueness as God's prophet.

They reported the incident
to Moses and demanded that

he stop them. One could
almost see Moses' concern.

And then reflecting on the
blessedness of the Spirit's

presence in his life,
he made this statement:

"Would that all the Lord's
people were prophets - that the

Lord would put His Spirit
upon them. " Numbers 11:29

Moses words began
to be fulfilled on the

Day of Pentecost when the
Spirit fell on an infant church

and prompted them to speak out
in tongues the wondrous works

of God. Peter, still under the
influence of the Holy Spirit,

explained this
phenomenon with the Word of God.

He said: "This is what was
spoken by the prophet Joel. "

God declared:

Just what is the role of
prophecy for the church today?

The New Testament Scriptures
make it clear that the Spirit

is a universal gift to
the church and that prophecy

is the characteristic
gift of the Holy Spirit.

The apostle Paul indicated
that the gift of prophecy

was for every believer.
"For you can all prophesy
00:09:51.76\00:09:55.98
one by one. "
That's I Corinthians 14:31

As we desire the renewal
of the church - we need it -

this earnest expectation
of the gift of prophecy among

God's people
gives us great hope.

You see, if we take
Paul's letter to the Corinthians

seriously, we must conclude
that the gift of prophecy is

indispensable to the
church. We can't do without it.

When we try to build churches
without the gift being active,

any of the gifts being active,
it's like trying to walk across

Illinois, or America,
or Texas, on your hands.

It can be done, but it's
certainly not the easy way

to do it - it's
the hard way to do it.

The importance of the gift
of prophecy is seen from Paul's

urgency for this gift
to be used. He commands the

Corinthians to
earnestly desire to prophesy.

I Corinthians 14:39 In
all the various lists and

discussions of the gifts
in Paul's letters, the only

constant gift is prophecy.
Whenever Paul attempts to

classify the gifts in terms
of importance, prophecy is given

preference over all
the rest of the gifts.

says: "Follow after charity
and desire spiritual gifts

ye may prophesy. "

The immense value of prophecy
to the church today is that it

is a current,
current, current word of God,

current word from God, to
encourage and guide His people.

The prophetic message is:
"A word fitly spoken is like

And this word comes directly
from God Almighty Himself.

good to the use and the edifying

A specific revelation
can be particularly powerful

in bringing conviction
of sin and of God's presence

to unbelievers or backsliders
who are present in the church

gatherings. Paul, the
apostle, said, suggest to the

Corinthians how
prophecy can work in this way.

"If all prophesy, and an

unbeliever or outsider enters,

he is convicted by all,

he is called to account by all,

disclosed, and so - falling on

his face, he will worship God

and declare that God is really

For the outsider, prophecy
can be a powerful sign of God's

presence among His people.
We cannot afford to despise

the gift of prophecy nor
can we allow it room for misuse

or misunderstanding and
prevent us from embracing

and manifesting it. Rather we
must diligently seek to control

its abuses by the
guidelines of Scripture.

saints of God - test all things.

We must obey this scripture
to allow the great constructive

experienced by our churches.

Through this unique spiritual
gift, the church is able

to grow. It is able to mature.
It is able to move forward.

these was the gift of prophecy.

him while he was in banishment

on the Isle of Patmos.
In recording these visions,

lot of teaching from other

This is what I appreciate about

counteract the counterfeit,

three angels' messages.

All the teachings that we

general kinds of prophecy calls.

men received some messages

to the people of their own time

You see, the gift of prophecy

may function long term or
short term - as in the case

of Ellen White. A person
may receive a life-long call

to prophetic
ministry. On the other hand,

to assign the gift of prophecy

temporarily. Its His gifts
and God gives them as He wills

often to resolve a
difficult issue that needs clear

intervention by the
Lord. This is why it's given.
