Tell me, you practice lifestyle medicine... 00:01:35.46\00:01:39.06 How long have you been a general practitioner? 00:01:39.09\00:01:41.80 and when did you start... and how long ago did you start 00:01:41.83\00:01:44.83 including lifestyle medicine? 00:01:44.87\00:01:47.14 I graduated in 1980 in Romania. We arrived in Australia in 1987. 00:01:47.17\00:01:55.81 I arrived here without speaking any English. 00:01:55.84\00:01:58.78 By the end of 89, I passed the AMA exam. Wow! 00:01:58.81\00:02:08.46 I am working here in Australia since 1990... 00:02:08.49\00:02:11.19 So you were able to learn the language in that time 00:02:11.23\00:02:13.50 well enough to pass those exams. That's very impressive. 00:02:13.53\00:02:17.67 Impressive. In...12 years ago, my husband got prostate cancer 00:02:17.70\00:02:25.37 at the age of 56 and we had been so shocked, 00:02:25.41\00:02:31.58 he said what we have done wrong because we have been 00:02:31.61\00:02:36.38 like all the other Adventists eating...considering eating 00:02:36.42\00:02:39.95 healthy, doing everything else good. 00:02:39.99\00:02:42.29 My husband does not believe it was fate, everything else was 00:02:42.32\00:02:46.39 good. Being so shocked, that's when we started looking, 00:02:46.43\00:02:52.40 what was wrong? 00:02:52.43\00:02:54.14 By God's grace we had our eyes open and we'd been so wrong, 00:02:54.17\00:03:00.01 we couldn't believe how wrong we'd been. 00:03:00.08\00:03:01.68 Tell us about that. We started changing our lifestyle. 00:03:01.71\00:03:05.65 Study, find out why is this... Find out why is that? 00:03:05.68\00:03:10.19 So, it took me quite a long time but to re-program, 00:03:10.22\00:03:16.52 to re-phase what medicine means. 00:03:16.56\00:03:19.06 And what sorts of things were you were eating that you 00:03:19.09\00:03:22.83 realized later were not really helpful? 00:03:22.86\00:03:24.53 We never ate too much meat or something like that, 00:03:24.57\00:03:29.07 but we ate a lot of processed food and one of our 00:03:29.10\00:03:33.68 preferred meals was French Potatoes. 00:03:33.71\00:03:36.51 I don't know if you know what French Potatoes are, 00:03:36.54\00:03:38.81 that means it's a layer of boiled potatoes, a layer of 00:03:38.85\00:03:42.38 Feta cheese, a layer of eggs and another layer of potatoes 00:03:42.42\00:03:47.29 and you put some sour cream on top and you put them 00:03:47.36\00:03:50.76 in the oven. Okay. That was an absolute disaster, 00:03:50.83\00:03:54.56 because not only do you have a lot of cholesterol, 00:03:54.60\00:03:57.17 that all cholesterol is oxidized so when you are high, 00:03:57.20\00:04:00.34 you have a lot of advanced glycation end products 00:04:00.37\00:04:03.41 and this is one of the stuff which is aging us, 00:04:03.44\00:04:06.57 one that is causing a lot of problem. 00:04:06.61\00:04:08.08 So I myself, I have gallbladder stone at the age of 42 00:04:08.11\00:04:12.08 and I did not know by that time, I said ah, my father had a 00:04:12.11\00:04:15.18 gallbladder stones but in the family, we eat the same. 00:04:15.22\00:04:19.55 So this is why, now I know why I have my gallbladder stone. 00:04:19.59\00:04:26.19 So, when you husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer, 00:04:26.23\00:04:29.43 that was your wakeup call... It was a real wakeup call, 00:04:29.46\00:04:32.73 he had radio therapy and by God's grace we changed our 00:04:32.77\00:04:36.71 lifestyle completely and by God's grace he's very well now. 00:04:36.74\00:04:39.94 Oh that's really good. So you've seen for yourself the difference 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.35 it can make when you really understand what is healthy 00:04:43.38\00:04:47.12 and actually do it. And of course it's more than just 00:04:47.15\00:04:50.19 the food, it's exercise and other things... It's everything. 00:04:50.22\00:04:55.49 Yeah. All the parts, all our environment which 00:04:55.52\00:04:58.56 belongs to us except the... Yes...Hydration...Yeah 00:04:58.59\00:05:03.13 Well now Esther, what about your story, 00:05:03.16\00:05:05.23 what was it that was your big health concern 00:05:05.27\00:05:09.54 and how you at some point came in contact with Dr. Coralia? 00:05:09.57\00:05:14.44 My journey began three years ago, I had a very good friend 00:05:14.48\00:05:18.78 of mine and she was suffering from gastric cancer. 00:05:18.81\00:05:23.85 But before she was diagnosed with gastric cancer 00:05:23.89\00:05:27.16 they had a lot of issues that had happened 00:05:27.19\00:05:33.03 in the family with the house being flooded, 00:05:33.06\00:05:37.57 the house the following year had been burnt down. 00:05:37.60\00:05:41.74 She was my prayer partner, she was my spiritual mentor, 00:05:41.77\00:05:48.24 she was my best friend you know. 00:05:48.28\00:05:51.55 We shared lots of things, I had immersed myself in the situation 00:05:51.58\00:05:59.05 of her being sick and of being unwell. 00:05:59.09\00:06:01.69 During the time leading up to her passing away 00:06:01.72\00:06:08.76 I suffered from...I had been suffering from anxiety 00:06:08.80\00:06:12.87 and I didn't even have an idea that I was suffering 00:06:12.90\00:06:15.84 from anxiety because I didn't know what anxiety was. 00:06:15.87\00:06:19.64 When people spoke about anxiety and depression before, 00:06:19.67\00:06:23.98 for me it was, what is this, I don't understand it. 00:06:24.01\00:06:28.08 Because when you are healthy and well 00:06:28.12\00:06:30.09 and you don't know what other people are going through 00:06:30.12\00:06:33.12 mentally, you really don't have an understanding 00:06:33.15\00:06:35.99 at all. You can't comprehend what they are going through. 00:06:36.02\00:06:39.59 So now, it had come to my doorstep and she passed away 00:06:39.63\00:06:45.57 and with her passing away. The loss and grief 00:06:45.60\00:06:49.37 had started an effect on me and I wasn't aware of this. 00:06:49.40\00:06:54.64 Just gradually I had started the symptoms of anxiety, 00:06:54.68\00:06:59.95 started showing up more and more in my lifestyle, 00:06:59.98\00:07:05.59 the way I was living. While traveling overseas, 00:07:05.65\00:07:08.89 I had gotten so sick while I was in the restaurant, 00:07:08.92\00:07:11.69 they called a paramedic to come and the paramedics 00:07:11.73\00:07:15.76 didn't come in time and my husband and sister put me in the 00:07:15.80\00:07:20.74 car and they rushed me off to the hospital. 00:07:20.77\00:07:22.44 The nurse looked at me and she said, 00:07:22.47\00:07:25.27 do you know what is happening to you my dear? 00:07:25.31\00:07:27.51 You're having an panic attack. 00:07:27.54\00:07:29.41 And those words that fell out of her mouth was 00:07:29.44\00:07:33.72 I don't know what this is. And they gave me medications 00:07:33.75\00:07:40.69 in a container and they said look, you are going to have to 00:07:40.72\00:07:43.59 see a psychologist and you are going to have to see 00:07:43.63\00:07:45.79 a doctor when you get back home to Australia, 00:07:45.83\00:07:49.86 you are going to have to follow up. 00:07:49.90\00:07:52.30 Well, I just became progressively worse. 00:07:52.33\00:07:56.47 Mentally, physically, it started taking full charge of me, 00:07:56.50\00:08:02.68 I was becoming desperate because I'd been socially 00:08:02.71\00:08:11.15 I didn't want to mix with people anymore 00:08:11.19\00:08:13.49 because this fear would arise up in me and I don't know 00:08:13.52\00:08:17.43 where this fear come from. 00:08:17.46\00:08:18.86 Eventually one day I became so desperate 00:08:18.89\00:08:27.24 I thought I need find a holistic doctor because I was seeing 00:08:27.27\00:08:31.11 a psychologist, it wasn't helping me. 00:08:31.14\00:08:34.01 I went on Google and up came this program 00:08:34.04\00:08:37.38 "Anxiety, Depression" by Neil Nedley, 00:08:37.41\00:08:40.58 run by the Casey Church down in Dandenong. 00:08:40.62\00:08:43.25 I though oh, maybe I should enroll, which I did. 00:08:43.28\00:08:47.76 I enrolled myself in his program and in this program 00:08:47.79\00:08:51.59 I had learned so much and the support of the people, 00:08:51.63\00:08:54.86 it was absolutely fantastic. 00:08:54.90\00:08:56.77 I learned about foods, I learned about plant based diets, 00:08:56.80\00:09:04.17 the balancing of it...I learned all of that and 00:09:04.21\00:09:09.04 that was all good and fine. The program was 12 weeks. 00:09:09.08\00:09:13.08 After the program was finished, I changed my lifestyle, 00:09:13.11\00:09:16.72 I was a person that exercised regularly and I thought that 00:09:16.75\00:09:23.46 I was eating well. Well, my health just started 00:09:23.49\00:09:30.50 spiraling downwards. I started getting severe stomach 00:09:30.53\00:09:35.27 cramps and I say severe, severe in a fetal position, 00:09:35.30\00:09:39.44 stomach cramps. During this program someone had said to me, 00:09:39.47\00:09:44.45 you know, we see Dr. Jigau, maybe you would like to see her. 00:09:44.48\00:09:49.15 I thought, well okay, it wouldn't hurt because by now 00:09:49.18\00:09:54.19 I was at desperate door. So I made an appointment 00:09:54.22\00:09:59.86 and went to Dr. Jigau, came to her and she said... 00:09:59.89\00:10:05.23 the calm, relaxed person that she is, 00:10:05.27\00:10:08.34 she said tell me what is happening to you. 00:10:08.37\00:10:11.97 Then I started telling her about...well, first of all 00:10:12.01\00:10:17.21 she said what's happening to you? My blood pressure 00:10:17.25\00:10:19.58 was sky high...that's what fear does. 00:10:19.61\00:10:23.49 It actually affects your blood pressure 00:10:23.52\00:10:24.99 without you even knowing it. 00:10:25.02\00:10:28.42 Then she said look, let's get some blood tests done. 00:10:28.46\00:10:35.10 By then, my GP that I had seen before... 00:10:35.13\00:10:40.14 Every time I did a blood test and went to see him, 00:10:40.17\00:10:43.10 he said to me, don't you want to go on anti-depressants? 00:10:43.14\00:10:46.88 It will really help you. Wrote out the script, 00:10:46.91\00:10:50.78 gave me the script, went off to the pharmacy 00:10:50.81\00:10:53.78 got the medication. I opened it up, read the contraindications, 00:10:53.82\00:10:57.79 I almost had an anxiety attack reading that. 00:10:57.82\00:11:00.86 I looked, I thought, I am not taking this medication, 00:11:00.89\00:11:05.29 what if I'm already suffering from fear? 00:11:05.33\00:11:08.40 You know the Bible says in Peter 1:5, I Peter 1:5 it says.. 00:11:08.43\00:11:17.87 Be sober, be vigilant, the devil goes around as a 00:11:17.91\00:11:22.08 roaring lion seeking whom he may devour and 00:11:22.11\00:11:26.68 I started learning that he's trying to devour my brain 00:11:26.72\00:11:31.99 with fear because fear was controlling me. 00:11:32.02\00:11:35.59 But I didn't know that I was suffering the effects 00:11:35.62\00:11:38.99 of losing a dear friend of mine. I did not know that it was 00:11:39.03\00:11:45.17 having an adverse effect on me and that was anxiety, 00:11:45.20\00:11:48.90 which was slowly creeping in with depression, 00:11:48.94\00:11:51.67 and I remember sitting in my doctor's room and I said, 00:11:51.71\00:11:55.08 all I want is for this to go away. 00:11:55.11\00:11:58.48 I just want to fall asleep and only wake up when it's 00:11:58.51\00:12:02.92 all gone and he said, take the medication, 00:12:02.95\00:12:07.72 but I wasn't convinced about this medication. 00:12:07.76\00:12:12.26 But Dr. Jigau, her approach was different. 00:12:12.29\00:12:15.46 After talking to her, she said let's go and do your test. 00:12:15.50\00:12:20.17 I went after and did the blood test. 00:12:20.20\00:12:21.94 It came back I had lack of Vitamin A, B, C, D, zinc, 00:12:21.97\00:12:29.24 Magnesium, low levels of Omega 3, absolutely low 00:12:29.28\00:12:37.22 and I said to her doctor, what do I do? 00:12:37.25\00:12:41.06 and she said to me, let's start with a nice whole food plant 00:12:41.09\00:12:47.46 based diet, let's see how we can change this. 00:12:47.50\00:12:50.33 She said are you exercising? I said yes, she said 00:12:50.37\00:12:53.80 early in the morning are you getting out there? 00:12:53.84\00:12:57.41 We also learned that walking in the blue light helps, 00:12:57.44\00:13:03.24 you build up Melatonin walking in the blue light. 00:13:03.28\00:13:10.35 I was waking up early and I was going for my walks 00:13:10.39\00:13:14.89 and I was doing my exercises. I was going for swimming lessons, 00:13:14.92\00:13:20.13 I am a swimmer, I was going for swimming. 00:13:20.16\00:13:22.26 But this anxiety just wasn't getting better, 00:13:22.30\00:13:29.00 it had spiraled to a point where the muscles in my back 00:13:29.04\00:13:35.78 were spasaming so badly that I couldn't breathe. 00:13:35.81\00:13:40.12 Oh my goodness. I ended up... That's incredible. 00:13:40.15\00:13:44.72 I ended up having such a bad attack that I ended up driving 00:13:44.75\00:13:50.56 in to the Renewed Public Hospital with my arms wrapped 00:13:50.59\00:13:55.86 around my abdomen saying I can't breathe 00:13:55.90\00:13:59.77 and they took me in, did all these tests and I had to stay 00:13:59.80\00:14:04.87 there for a long period of time and then they recommend all 00:14:04.91\00:14:09.94 these different tests and eventually I ended up 00:14:09.98\00:14:13.15 going for an angiogram and the doctor said to me, 00:14:13.18\00:14:17.89 there's nothing wrong with your heart, your heart is fine. 00:14:17.92\00:14:22.52 You're suffering from musculoskeletal issues 00:14:22.56\00:14:26.19 and I do have Fibromyalgia and it is actually... 00:14:26.23\00:14:32.33 it flared up from suffering from anxiety and depression. 00:14:32.37\00:14:38.27 Do you know, it's an incredibly disabling thing, 00:14:38.31\00:14:41.78 not just mentally, but physically as you've just 00:14:41.81\00:14:45.41 experienced and I don't know if people really understand 00:14:45.45\00:14:48.45 that how bad it can be physically and so I am really 00:14:48.48\00:14:53.56 sorry that you have been through that terrible journey. Go on. 00:14:53.59\00:14:56.83 Well actually there were times when I felt that I'm being put 00:14:56.86\00:15:03.70 in the crucible, that I'm being refined in this process 00:15:03.73\00:15:09.20 of suffering from anxiety and depression. 00:15:09.24\00:15:11.64 I started learning to...I've always been a prayer warrior 00:15:11.67\00:15:18.28 and I've always journaled, for years I've journaled. 00:15:18.31\00:15:24.45 In sermons, I journal them, the prayers I journaled, 00:15:24.49\00:15:29.29 and I started turning more and more to the Lord. 00:15:29.32\00:15:35.40 I had suffered severe from anxiety and depression 00:15:35.43\00:15:41.17 that I had brain fog, I had fatigue, I had to manage to 00:15:41.20\00:15:50.45 scramble my body up in the morning, get dressed, 00:15:50.48\00:15:54.38 go to work and I had to listen intently, I had to focus 00:15:54.42\00:15:59.09 on what people were saying because I needed to work. 00:15:59.12\00:16:03.32 I needed to think more because brain fog is very cloudy 00:16:03.36\00:16:11.60 and your thinking patterns are not sharp, they are not clear. 00:16:11.63\00:16:19.27 It's a vicious cycle anxiety and depression 00:16:19.31\00:16:24.61 when you don't get help, it can actually put you in a very 00:16:24.65\00:16:31.25 precarious situation. 00:16:31.29\00:16:33.22 Yes, well thankfully you were able to get some help 00:16:33.25\00:16:36.73 from our lovely doctor here. Yes, she looked at my diet 00:16:36.76\00:16:40.30 and she said, okay, let's change this, 00:16:40.33\00:16:43.50 let's start off with...You need to build up your Omega 3's 00:16:43.53\00:16:47.90 Esther so get some Hemp seed, get your Chia seeds, 00:16:47.94\00:16:51.37 get your Lin seeds, grind them up, get a smoothie going 00:16:51.41\00:16:57.55 let that be your first drink in the morning. 00:16:57.58\00:17:00.45 I started my plant based diet, whole meal foods, 00:17:00.48\00:17:06.65 my green vege's, my green smoothies. She said to me, 00:17:06.69\00:17:11.33 are you not eating your carrots? You got no vitamin A inside 00:17:11.36\00:17:15.70 of you? I started my... Because when you are sick, 00:17:15.73\00:17:23.81 your clarity of thought is not very clear, so with coming into 00:17:23.84\00:17:30.35 her office, her listening to me, that empathy 00:17:30.38\00:17:34.98 telling me you know what, there's hope, 00:17:35.02\00:17:37.45 this is not the end of the road, you can get better. 00:17:37.49\00:17:40.56 Ah! That's encouraging. There is light after anxiety. 00:17:40.59\00:17:44.23 There is hope and, I started changing my lifestyle of my diet 00:17:44.26\00:17:53.44 with colorful vege's, colorful... getting my Quinoa 00:17:53.47\00:17:57.94 in, my brown rice in, my vegetables in and also 00:17:57.97\00:18:04.91 I turned to God. I used to rush home in the afternoon... 00:18:04.95\00:18:08.95 to get...I changed my work patterns. 00:18:08.98\00:18:12.09 I used to work long hours before, long ridiculous hours. 00:18:12.12\00:18:19.09 I changed my hours, I spoke to my husband and he was so 00:18:19.13\00:18:24.40 empathetic, he said to me, why don't you work four days 00:18:24.43\00:18:28.87 a week and shorten your hours? 00:18:28.90\00:18:30.81 In the meantime before I did that Dr. Jigau said I think 00:18:30.84\00:18:37.91 you better go for a CT Scan... no and ultrasound. 00:18:37.95\00:18:41.28 I had a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy, 00:18:41.32\00:18:46.52 they found out I was suffering from gastritis. 00:18:46.55\00:18:49.12 Do you want to explain what gastritis is? 00:18:49.16\00:18:51.79 It's just an inflammation on the stomach. 00:18:51.83\00:18:54.50 Yes. I had inflammation in my mesenteric glands. 00:18:54.53\00:19:00.24 That was mesenteric adenitis when you came with one of the 00:19:00.27\00:19:04.57 big problems. You know when I examined you and you had 00:19:04.61\00:19:07.51 such a bad... and I sent you to have an ultrasound 00:19:07.54\00:19:11.05 and the ultrasound was confirming yeah, because 00:19:11.08\00:19:13.92 we're not sure if it's appendiscitis or it was 00:19:13.95\00:19:18.29 inflamed. The pain. Yes! And settle and with the lifestyle 00:19:18.32\00:19:24.89 change God started relaxing, the pain started easing. 00:19:24.93\00:19:31.43 I had to see an Osteopath... For Fibromyalgia. 00:19:31.47\00:19:37.24 Fibromyalgia. That's a painful journey 00:19:37.27\00:19:42.98 in so many ways, with so many things going on 00:19:43.01\00:19:45.91 in your body and you're continuing to work, 00:19:45.95\00:19:48.12 somehow or other you just pushed yourself through that. 00:19:48.15\00:19:51.32 But that must have been a really really difficult 00:19:52.12\00:19:53.86 time of your life. Looking at you now, it's hard to imagine 00:19:53.89\00:19:58.23 all of that happening to you. 00:19:58.26\00:20:00.00 So I'm taking it that it's all a thing of the past, 00:20:00.03\00:20:02.43 is all of that behind you? Yes! 00:20:02.46\00:20:04.80 It's...Anxiety is something that tries to trick the brain, 00:20:04.83\00:20:09.74 like you have to scared of something that is fearful 00:20:09.77\00:20:14.21 that is going to happen but it is not true. It's not true. 00:20:14.24\00:20:18.35 You eventually learn that fear comes from Satan. 00:20:18.38\00:20:23.95 Jesus says, I come to give you and I've come to give you 00:20:23.99\00:20:27.66 life abundantly. Well, I think the first thing that happened 00:20:27.69\00:20:30.69 when His birth was announced was "Peace on Earth" 00:20:30.73\00:20:34.66 the last thing He said was to the Disciples was, 00:20:34.70\00:20:37.27 "My Peace I leave with you", and so yes, it's there for us. 00:20:37.30\00:20:41.07 It really is and that's what God would like us to experience 00:20:41.10\00:20:44.11 and it play's a big role, the spirituality, 00:20:44.14\00:20:46.78 the connection with the One who created us. 00:20:46.81\00:20:49.68 Played a huge role in our healing, any kind of healing 00:20:49.71\00:20:54.05 really, and a lot of it starts in the mind. Absolutely. 00:20:54.08\00:20:57.52 Whatever is going on in our mind is telling the rest 00:20:57.55\00:20:59.39 of our body things that aren't helpful so. Absolutely. 00:20:59.42\00:21:03.66 It's good that you had that connection. Absolutely. 00:21:03.69\00:21:05.56 I hate to think how different it might be if you hadn't a 00:21:05.59\00:21:08.16 wonderful GP and a connection with the creator who can... 00:21:08.20\00:21:14.94 Yeah, it's just the changes she implemented. 00:21:14.97\00:21:16.67 She was so nutrient depleted, so nutrient depleted, 00:21:16.71\00:21:20.68 that is the problem with our western diet. 00:21:20.71\00:21:23.11 We are very nutrient depleted, we eat food which is very good 00:21:23.14\00:21:27.52 taste and it's very pleasant in the mouth and does not 00:21:27.55\00:21:31.92 have the nutrients. I mean, how can you expect the brain 00:21:31.95\00:21:36.39 to work properly when you have a vitamin B depleted completely, 00:21:36.42\00:21:39.89 when you don't have vitamin E, when you don't have vitamin C. 00:21:39.93\00:21:43.60 Yep. So, this is why depression and anxiety, that disease 00:21:43.63\00:21:48.30 of the 21st century. 00:21:48.34\00:21:49.67 The main problem is, we are so depleted in nutrients. 00:21:49.70\00:21:54.74 I had some lecture in Monash University, I was talking about 00:21:54.78\00:22:00.15 that microbiome and as I walked in, it was a big panel there 00:22:00.18\00:22:06.59 and it was written on it, "One in four teenagers classified 00:22:06.62\00:22:13.43 for a mental disorder." 00:22:13.46\00:22:16.10 Isn't that tragic? One in four! It was terrible, when I read it, 00:22:16.13\00:22:21.87 I said Oh No! So the reason is our kids and teenagers, 00:22:21.90\00:22:27.24 that are eating so bad. Apart of the other program, 00:22:27.28\00:22:30.48 this is one of the programs. Staying on the machines 00:22:30.51\00:22:34.78 all the time, lots of media interruption, 00:22:34.82\00:22:38.09 not social connections. Yeah!
