Welcome to Healthy Living, I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:15.51\00:00:18.75 Today's guest is a doctor from Melbourne, Australia 00:00:18.78\00:00:22.18 who prescribes food as medicine, and with her is one of her 00:00:22.22\00:00:27.06 patients who had many health problems which have been helped 00:00:27.09\00:00:30.99 with a change of lifestyle. Stay tuned. 00:00:31.03\00:00:34.26 Thomas Edison has been described as America's greatest inventor 00:01:03.73\00:01:08.56 and is best known for inventing the light bulb 00:01:08.60\00:01:11.50 but he also penned this famous quote "The doctor of the future 00:01:11.53\00:01:16.50 will give no medication, but will interest his patients 00:01:16.54\00:01:19.84 in the care of the human frame, diet and in the cause 00:01:19.87\00:01:24.15 and prevention of disease." 00:01:24.18\00:01:25.75 Well today, we have such a doctor in our studio 00:01:25.78\00:01:29.55 with living proof in the person of one of her many patients 00:01:29.58\00:01:33.92 who can testify about the potency of what we call 00:01:33.96\00:01:37.46 lifestyle medicine. 00:01:37.49\00:01:39.29 Welcome to Dr. Jigau and welcome to you Leila, 00:01:39.33\00:01:43.37 it's wonderful to have you here on this program and thank you 00:01:43.40\00:01:46.43 for coming interstate out of your busy practice to come and 00:01:46.47\00:01:49.80 talk to us about this, and thank you too Leila 00:01:49.84\00:01:52.77 because you have a story to tell. Perhaps you can talk 00:01:52.81\00:01:55.88 about this together. So what were some of your many 00:01:55.91\00:01:59.35 health problems? I have suffered into stage two 00:01:59.38\00:02:05.25 liver cirrhosis and that has taken a really severe beating 00:02:05.29\00:02:11.36 on my body. I have suffered over 30 times of coma... 00:02:11.39\00:02:17.97 Coma, 30 times? Yes, over. I stopped counting on 30 00:02:18.00\00:02:23.34 and I also suffered over 10 times, severe hemorrhages 00:02:23.37\00:02:27.98 which left my left leg completely dead. 00:02:28.01\00:02:33.82 I had to be in a nursing home for 16 months, sorry 18 months 00:02:33.85\00:02:39.65 where they had to lift my leg down and lift it up, 00:02:39.69\00:02:43.49 it was completely damaged and I also suffered from fibromyalgia, 00:02:43.53\00:02:50.47 sjogren's syndrome, diabetes... That's quite a list of problems. 00:02:50.50\00:02:56.97 Yes. And some blockages in the arteries and I was a mess, 00:02:57.01\00:03:03.68 complete mess. That must have been a very very difficult 00:03:03.71\00:03:08.28 and distressing time. Although after 6 months of the operation, 00:03:08.32\00:03:12.35 I left the nursing home, but I was still so run down 00:03:12.39\00:03:19.16 completely and I went and I saw Coralia on the 6th of 00:03:19.19\00:03:27.54 last November. Alright, so when did these problems start? 00:03:27.57\00:03:32.81 I think that was back about 09.. Yes, that's when I discovered 00:03:32.84\00:03:36.14 the liver cirrhosis, and by 2011 I had 9 viruses in the 00:03:36.18\00:03:43.39 esophagus, where they burst and I suffered severe hemorrhage. 00:03:43.42\00:03:49.39 Wow. And you've only caught up with this lovely doctor...Yes. 00:03:49.42\00:03:53.29 I was so lucky. That's very recent, how long ago was that, 00:03:53.33\00:03:56.33 was that? A couple of months and what a life change. 00:03:56.36\00:04:00.64 She just looked at me and the way I looked, I was gray, 00:04:00.67\00:04:07.84 I couldn't...I was limping, I had sever pains all over 00:04:07.88\00:04:13.92 and she looked at me and said, don't worry, you won't know 00:04:13.95\00:04:18.25 yourself in 6 months. It's a miracle really. She explained 00:04:18.29\00:04:27.10 to me how changing your food will help me and she checked my 00:04:27.13\00:04:36.87 blood, and found how many deficiencies I had and 00:04:36.91\00:04:42.84 corrected them and with... 00:04:42.88\00:04:46.25 I don't call this a diet, now this is the way 00:04:46.28\00:04:51.05 I live and it's surprisingly to say, but in 6weeks, 00:04:51.09\00:04:59.39 I've lost 10 kilos. Wow! Wow, I'm sure there's a lot 00:04:59.43\00:05:05.23 of viewers out there who wish they could be saying that. 00:05:05.27\00:05:07.74 I have been trying all my life to lose weight, but I kept 00:05:07.77\00:05:11.07 losing and gaining and losing and gaining, but nothing 00:05:11.11\00:05:15.01 like this. You want to mention you have been on 00:05:15.04\00:05:18.68 plant based diet. Oh yes. And Leila have done this change so 00:05:18.71\00:05:24.75 quick. When I explained to her how it's working, she was really 00:05:24.79\00:05:28.99 determined to go in every detail and do everything what is right. 00:05:29.02\00:05:32.93 It is hard, it is not easy to do such a big change, 00:05:32.96\00:05:37.17 but because of her health situation and she was really 00:05:37.20\00:05:41.07 desperate, she was happy to do it. 00:05:41.10\00:05:44.14 Yes, I started as soon as I left her office. 00:05:44.17\00:05:47.48 That's it, I had a freezer, it's got meat and chicken and fish 00:05:47.51\00:05:54.45 and I cleaned the lot. I said no more, nothing refined in the 00:05:54.48\00:05:59.59 cupboards...Being diabetic, anything you find 00:05:59.62\00:06:04.06 will lift my sugar, my diabetes. I used to reach 25, 32 00:06:04.09\00:06:11.00 and I was on insulin twice a day. Just let's clear, 00:06:11.03\00:06:16.14 that 25, 32, that was your blood sugar reading and 00:06:16.17\00:06:20.38 how bad is that doctor? It is not bad, it is extremely bad. 00:06:20.41\00:06:26.11 And it's wonderful because with the lifestyle changes Leila has 00:06:26.15\00:06:32.59 done, we've been able to take her off her insulin. 00:06:32.62\00:06:36.16 So now she's taking just tablets. In just a couple of 00:06:36.19\00:06:39.89 months? And her blood through her liver it is really 00:06:39.93\00:06:43.06 well controlled and we intend to cut the medications slowly. 00:06:43.10\00:06:48.14 Yes. As we progress. Now my sugar level is 6.5, 00:06:48.17\00:06:53.21 it might reach 7, but usually on the lower part. 00:06:53.24\00:06:58.38 It's amazing isn't it, in just that time, it's... 00:06:58.41\00:07:01.88 I've never had cravings to eat what I used to eat at all. 00:07:01.92\00:07:08.79 I don't use sugar completely, I use fruits, I use even 00:07:08.82\00:07:15.73 dry fruits and that doesn't release my sugar because it's 00:07:15.76\00:07:19.67 not refined. That is wonderful, it's a wonderful story 00:07:19.70\00:07:24.21 and that's wonderful that she was able to catch up with you 00:07:24.24\00:07:27.04 doctor, to support her through these stages. She came with 00:07:27.08\00:07:30.38 multiple problems and she had multiple medications. 00:07:30.41\00:07:35.18 She had so many tablets she shouldn't be on, three types 00:07:35.22\00:07:38.89 of anti-depressants, pain killers, a handful, and we cut 00:07:38.92\00:07:46.23 them down slowly because when she came to me 00:07:46.26\00:07:50.53 she couldn't walk. 00:07:50.57\00:07:51.90 Yes. My leg it's all the nerve damage in my left leg, 00:07:51.93\00:07:57.01 I was mainly dragging it and limping. 00:07:57.04\00:08:00.14 But you walked in here and came up the stairs. Right. 00:08:00.18\00:08:03.35 Because my leg is 80% better. In a couple of months. Yeah. 00:08:03.38\00:08:08.35 Two and a half months exactly. I explained to her how lack of 00:08:08.38\00:08:11.79 nutrients...because the way she was eating before and a lot of 00:08:11.82\00:08:16.56 medication had an impact on her body...What we put in our 00:08:16.59\00:08:20.53 mouth, it's so important...we cut her pain killers slowly 00:08:20.56\00:08:26.27 and I asked her Leilata exercise because she was not moving. 00:08:26.30\00:08:31.37 I told her, it is not just one fact, the lifestyle is not 00:08:31.41\00:08:35.68 just food, lifestyle is exercise, 00:08:35.71\00:08:38.55 lifestyle is dealing with the stress, 00:08:38.58\00:08:40.52 lifestyle is staying in the sun and I advise her stay in the 00:08:40.55\00:08:44.85 sun at least 1/2 hour a day. The second time when she was 00:08:44.89\00:08:48.32 seeing me, she had a fall in the garden and she stayed 00:08:48.36\00:08:52.56 there for, how long had you been there? 00:08:52.59\00:08:54.06 Oh, over, about 40 minutes. Because she was not able to 00:08:54.10\00:08:58.27 lift herself up to walk. Yes. 00:08:58.30\00:09:02.20 What an incredible turn around. I mean...It's not that I just 00:09:02.24\00:09:06.47 lost 10 kilos, now I have lost 13 kilos. I have stopped the 00:09:06.51\00:09:12.71 medication I was taking for the nerve pain. I stopped the 00:09:12.75\00:09:17.35 pain killers and I was wasn't doing Panadol, I was on OxyNorm 00:09:17.39\00:09:21.92 and Endone and they are a lot more freeing, you know. 00:09:21.96\00:09:28.66 That's all gone...How's your pain level now? 00:09:28.70\00:09:34.10 I never knew what it was like to wake up without pain. 00:09:34.14\00:09:39.11 At the moment, I am pain free. Oh my goodness. 00:09:39.14\00:09:43.08 Completely pain free. Isn't that an amazing thing, just 00:09:43.11\00:09:48.62 beautiful. To me it's a miracle. Well I'm glad you met a doctor 00:09:48.65\00:09:52.75 of the future's promising, it isn't a couple hundred years 00:09:52.79\00:09:55.56 ago. Oh yes! I don't know what I would have done without her. 00:09:55.59\00:09:58.39 Really, she helped me so much... Lifestyle is a very 00:09:58.43\00:10:02.23 potent thing. 00:10:02.26\00:10:03.60 Look it was back at about 2005 I think it was that the 00:10:03.63\00:10:07.04 US Surgeon General said that he attributed health status, 00:10:07.07\00:10:13.34 10% to genetics, 10% to environmental factors, 00:10:13.38\00:10:18.78 10% to medical care and 70% to our lifestyle choices. 00:10:18.81\00:10:25.19 Absolutely. Yeah, so it is very, very, very powerful. 00:10:25.22\00:10:30.09 I am glad that you understand that, you are a doctor who 00:10:30.13\00:10:33.80 understands that. It is fascinating how it happened 00:10:33.83\00:10:39.37 to me, so not only to Leila but we let our health go until 00:10:39.40\00:10:45.07 we are desperate. When we are desperate you have no choice. 00:10:45.11\00:10:49.24 You know, it is supposed to start working 00:10:49.28\00:10:52.01 a little bit early. 00:10:52.05\00:10:53.58 But some people do not do it until it's late, it is late 00:10:53.62\00:10:59.59 but it is working. That is fascinating and that is what 00:10:59.62\00:11:02.62 I learned. You know the mechanics of healing our body, 00:11:02.66\00:11:05.93 it is inbuilt by God in our body, it is there as long as we 00:11:05.96\00:11:12.20 don't assault our body with food, our body, it will repair, 00:11:12.23\00:11:20.18 slowly and surely, we don't have a quick effect. 00:11:20.21\00:11:25.05 You know, these days people want a tablet, 00:11:25.08\00:11:27.08 they want a tablet, take a tablet and I'm pain free. 00:11:27.12\00:11:30.22 So what, in the next six hours you have to take another tablet. 00:11:30.25\00:11:32.82 So that's what it is, God's way of healing, it is slow, 00:11:32.85\00:11:37.56 it's taking time, it is taking a long time to do the damage, 00:11:37.59\00:11:42.36 it is taking a long time to do the repair. 00:11:42.40\00:11:45.30 But it is happening and as you are committed to do what we know 00:11:45.33\00:11:51.07 what you have to do. Yes! 00:11:51.11\00:11:53.41 I actually read something by Dr. Roger Greenlaw who 00:11:53.44\00:11:57.05 was a gastroenterologist and he worked a lot with lifestyle 00:11:57.08\00:12:02.28 medicine with the Chip program going back some years. 00:12:02.32\00:12:05.35 He explained how this disease reversal actually takes place. 00:12:05.39\00:12:09.32 He said that he observed as a gastroenterologist that 00:12:09.36\00:12:13.09 in seven days you have a completely new stomach lining. 00:12:13.13\00:12:15.70 In a month you have a whole new layer of skin, in four months 00:12:15.73\00:12:23.44 all new red blood cells and in one year 98% of our body 00:12:23.47\00:12:29.81 cells have been replaced. So we literally are what we eat. 00:12:29.84\00:12:35.12 That was amazing. He said the change of the cells takes place 00:12:35.15\00:12:39.32 at about 11/2 million a day. Now I got the calculator 00:12:39.35\00:12:43.66 and did a bit of math on that and by the time we've watched 00:12:43.69\00:12:46.86 this program...Now I've forgotten you see. 00:12:46.90\00:12:49.66 It was several hundred... I have explained to Leila 00:12:49.70\00:12:54.24 what happened...I have explained to him what the latest sciences 00:12:54.27\00:12:57.74 confirming...what you put in your mouth, it's the most 00:12:57.77\00:13:01.44 environmental change and gene change. Until now, we realize 00:13:01.48\00:13:06.15 food is just micronutrients... we have proteins, we have 00:13:06.18\00:13:09.78 vitamins, we have minerals... which we need them. 00:13:09.82\00:13:12.52 We now know our body does not work like that, our body food 00:13:12.55\00:13:17.09 is information for our genome. Food talks to your genes, 00:13:17.13\00:13:21.26 you eat the wrong food, your body will produce genes 00:13:21.30\00:13:26.47 which will implement inflammation in your body. 00:13:26.50\00:13:29.57 You have proper food, your body is repairing, so it is much more 00:13:29.60\00:13:34.21 deeper than the science of today and the science of microbiome 00:13:34.24\00:13:37.28 and microbiota...The bacteria in which we have in our gut, 00:13:37.31\00:13:41.15 and 20 years ago we did not know, that's where your health 00:13:41.18\00:13:44.79 is happening, in your gut. 00:13:44.82\00:13:47.52 That's where your second immune system, that's where your 00:13:47.56\00:13:50.99 second liver, that's where the toxification happens 00:13:51.03\00:13:54.36 and that's your second brain. 00:13:54.40\00:13:56.70 It's fascination what happens in the gut and what is more 00:13:56.73\00:14:00.40 fascinating is we are able to manipulate what happens there. 00:14:00.44\00:14:04.51 What you put in your mouth, it will feed the bacteria 00:14:04.54\00:14:08.48 which you have there. You have a bad bacteria or you have 00:14:08.51\00:14:11.05 good bacteria, it depends on what you eat and it can change 00:14:11.08\00:14:15.88 and these bacteria as I explained to Leila... 00:14:15.92\00:14:18.85 you know you have bacteria in your gut which is doing 00:14:18.89\00:14:21.52 gamma-aminobutyric acid which is similar to Valium, 00:14:21.56\00:14:25.23 the tablet which will give you to settle you and not to be 00:14:25.26\00:14:29.10 anxious anymore and instead of taking your tablets 00:14:29.13\00:14:31.93 eat proper food and your body will manufacture this by itself 00:14:31.97\00:14:37.11 as it was designed. When we eat the way we eat, 00:14:37.14\00:14:41.41 we make such a big destruction in our body. We have no idea, 00:14:41.44\00:14:45.95 I did not know. We have to go on God's formula because we've 00:14:45.98\00:14:51.45 been designed to eat as God had planned and the science 00:14:51.49\00:14:56.56 today is taking years over years to discover what God said. 00:14:56.59\00:15:03.33 Forty years a scientist...I read a book now written by 00:15:03.37\00:15:08.07 Professor Ameron Meyer at the University of California, 00:15:08.10\00:15:11.37 Los Angeles. Forty years he discovered the God brain 00:15:11.41\00:15:15.91 connection. Forty years, it is fascinating you know. 00:15:15.94\00:15:21.48 He's talking about God's design and the foods...I mean, 00:15:21.52\00:15:25.92 the foods that you are recommending, 00:15:25.95\00:15:27.72 the plant based foods... It's interesting that the 00:15:27.76\00:15:32.19 World Health Organization now recognizes those foods 00:15:32.23\00:15:37.33 as healthy foods. I came across, I didn't actually intend to 00:15:37.37\00:15:40.97 but I stumbled on their web- site across this healthy diet 00:15:41.00\00:15:43.97 fact sheet and it lists five foods as healthy and they are 00:15:44.01\00:15:48.94 up on the screen. There they are: 00:15:48.98\00:15:50.58 Right back at the beginning of time, that's what God 00:15:55.72\00:16:00.76 recommended to our first parents and finally, 00:16:00.79\00:16:04.03 finally at least one organization, 00:16:04.06\00:16:06.86 The World Health Organization is recognizing that as the case. 00:16:06.90\00:16:10.07 I hope the rest of the world catches up and I hope 00:16:10.27\00:16:13.57 it's really understood because we want to hear stories 00:16:13.60\00:16:16.30 like your' s Leila. I mean the pain that you had been through 00:16:16.34\00:16:20.48 and the trauma...Years... More than 30 times you've been 00:16:20.51\00:16:25.21 in a coma. Yes...That's a frightening thing and you were 00:16:25.25\00:16:29.92 so unwell. Look at you now. I mean you are just absolutely 00:16:29.95\00:16:33.86 glowing and you are walking and you don't have pain. NO... 00:16:33.89\00:16:36.52 completely, I'm pain free. You have to mention you've had 00:16:36.56\00:16:41.40 your liver transplant. Yes, and I also had... 00:16:41.43\00:16:44.17 That happened before her liver transplant. 00:16:44.20\00:16:46.87 Yes. Eventually they found a match donor. 00:16:46.90\00:16:50.91 Maybe if I would have met Coralie when I found that I had 00:16:50.94\00:16:54.38 liver cirrhosis, maybe we would have reversed that instead of 00:16:54.41\00:16:59.31 ending up... having to go through all that because that 00:16:59.35\00:17:02.82 was a long time wasn't it? It was a 131/2 hour operation. 00:17:02.85\00:17:07.22 Oh dear. And a long time to recover the body from such a 00:17:07.26\00:17:14.26 beating...Yes...Over five years of side effects. 00:17:14.30\00:17:18.33 Well I'm glad that you have found...been in touch with 00:17:18.37\00:17:22.37 Dr. Karelia and so many others. I'm interested that you 00:17:22.40\00:17:26.57 said Leila was very keen to get started right away. 00:17:26.61\00:17:32.01 As soon as she walked out the door, she was ready to go. 00:17:32.05\00:17:34.78 Do you find that that's the case with other patients? 00:17:34.82\00:17:37.09 All of your patients? It's not the case with a lot of patients 00:17:37.12\00:17:41.49 lack the motivation because it is a very big change. 00:17:41.52\00:17:45.63 So I learned to help them to help them to motivate them 00:17:45.66\00:17:49.96 but the best motivation is when you start feeling good, 00:17:50.00\00:17:53.40 you'll see, I feel much better and it was not like that before. 00:17:53.44\00:17:56.91 You say, oh yeah, it is working and it's gradual work. 00:17:56.94\00:18:01.68 In a way it's hard to change and I advise my patients to 00:18:01.71\00:18:04.78 do gradual change. It's not easy when you eat a heavy 00:18:04.81\00:18:08.25 animal based diet to change on a plant based diet and 00:18:08.28\00:18:13.62 you have to do it gradually... your body to adjust with the 00:18:13.66\00:18:17.36 changes. And it depends how sick they are and I realize 00:18:17.39\00:18:21.83 that most of my clever patients, they are able to do it 00:18:21.86\00:18:24.97 straight away you know. A lot of patients find it hard to 00:18:25.00\00:18:28.40 change. It's hard to change but you have to reason, you know. 00:18:28.44\00:18:32.57 Sometimes it takes... Why you do this, it's really 00:18:32.61\00:18:35.74 it's really...Once in a while to do this or not so sure 00:18:35.78\00:18:41.72 if I have to do it or not. I couldn't wait. 00:18:41.75\00:18:44.22 Now, we start this evening. No way I'm even going to cook 00:18:44.25\00:18:50.89 that, I cleaned it out. I cannot wait to see how Leila will be 00:18:50.93\00:18:56.43 in a year from now. Yes because 98% of your body cells 00:18:56.46\00:19:02.60 will have been replaced. You will have almost a new body. 00:19:02.64\00:19:06.27 I haven't felt this way even when I was in my 30's. 00:19:06.31\00:19:09.98 Wow! I was aching constantly and my energy was always low. 00:19:10.01\00:19:16.65 I discovered by accident that I was diabetic and I also have 00:19:16.69\00:19:24.23 my brother has suffered with liver cirrhosis, he's stage A. 00:19:24.26\00:19:31.60 I took him to my specialist that was looking after me. 00:19:31.63\00:19:37.57 His name is Steve Lontos and he found he had two viruses 00:19:37.61\00:19:45.55 that if he would have left them, they would have burst 00:19:45.58\00:19:48.45 and caused him internal hemorr- hage similar to what I suffered. 00:19:48.48\00:19:53.36 I think you said that when that happened and they burst 00:19:53.39\00:19:56.12 and you were taken to the hospital and they didn't expect 00:19:56.16\00:19:58.39 you to live through the night. Oh no, no, no, they didn't. 00:19:58.43\00:20:00.93 They told my son that she's not going to make it through 00:20:00.96\00:20:03.30 the night, you better call the family. He did and my other son 00:20:03.33\00:20:09.94 and my daughter came. My daughter was very much informed 00:20:09.97\00:20:14.71 of my situation and she told him, she doesn't have 00:20:14.74\00:20:19.61 a tear in the stomach, she has viruses and you better 00:20:19.65\00:20:23.85 check it. She really told him. Yes. If she don't and she dies, 00:20:23.89\00:20:29.06 I'm going to sue the hospital. But when Caleb changed his 00:20:29.09\00:20:34.50 diet, after three weeks he had seen his liver specialist again. 00:20:34.53\00:20:38.57 Just going back to him. Your brother? Yes. And his speicalist 00:20:38.60\00:20:43.81 looked at his blood test and said, what have you done? 00:20:43.84\00:20:46.71 He told him, I changed completely on a plant based 00:20:46.74\00:20:50.15 diet, I lost weight and I'm exercising, I'm staying in the 00:20:50.18\00:20:53.82 sun and he said, that's great. Your liver has already improved. 00:20:53.85\00:20:58.35 In three weeks. Yeah, in three weeks. He said keep going 00:20:58.39\00:21:02.16 what you are doing...- Whatever you are just keep going. 00:21:02.19\00:21:05.96 So might it be the case if Leila hadn't known this in the 00:21:05.99\00:21:10.30 early stages, she might not have had to go through 00:21:10.33\00:21:12.87 all of that. We don't know, we have different causes 00:21:12.90\00:21:14.97 for the liver but you know we can control it. Yes. 00:21:15.00\00:21:20.31 It was not due to alcohol, never anything like that. 00:21:20.34\00:21:24.15 Now normally you would associate alcohol with liver problems 00:21:24.18\00:21:27.52 but you never...No, never, I don't drink so I couldn't... 00:21:27.55\00:21:33.79 I didn't define why. They said oh, I don't know, 00:21:33.82\00:21:37.79 maybe your diabetes affect it, maybe this. 00:21:37.83\00:21:40.70 But they were not sure why and they wouldn't really 00:21:40.73\00:21:46.90 put me on the list for liver transplant, only when I started 00:21:46.94\00:21:51.97 to get worse. Because they said they won't do it unless 00:21:52.01\00:21:58.08 it's the end. And I was lucky, not really lucky but I do 00:21:58.11\00:22:03.49 believe that it was a blessing from God. Yeah. He saved my 00:22:03.52\00:22:07.39 life. The first hemorrhage, all through my comas, 00:22:07.42\00:22:12.13 my liver came just in time... It was God. Glory to Him! Really. 00:22:12.16\00:22:19.80 So would you have a lot of patients who've had their health 00:22:19.83\00:22:25.74 turned around in one way or another because of this same 00:22:25.77\00:22:29.04 sort of recommendations that you have. I did have a lot of 00:22:29.08\00:22:32.25 patients and some of them will give their testimony here today. 00:22:32.28\00:22:35.45 Yes. It is reversing, it is working and I have some 00:22:35.48\00:22:40.59 extraordinary stories which one were mentioned to you. 00:22:40.79\00:22:44.66 Her father which was 89... Oh yeah, we talked about that 00:22:44.69\00:22:47.73 in the whole program. Yeah. Recover from...correct his 00:22:47.76\00:22:54.64 kidney failure because he was end stage with kidney failure 00:22:54.67\00:22:57.91 and he was supposed to start dialysis and he's still 00:22:57.94\00:23:01.14 two years after and his kidney function is much better. 00:23:01.18\00:23:05.41 So roughly, if you had to stop and think of a rough figure, 00:23:05.45\00:23:08.48 how many patients have you had who have actually embraced 00:23:08.52\00:23:12.22 the lifestyle change and seen some good results? 00:23:12.25\00:23:14.96 I have a big clinic and a lot of patients, about 30% of the 00:23:14.99\00:23:17.69 patients, they start listening and they improve their health. 00:23:17.73\00:23:24.57 Another one, they go like they went before, 00:23:24.60\00:23:26.43 they take their tablets and they don't do any change. 00:23:26.47\00:23:28.84 Some people are doing the change for a while and they 00:23:28.87\00:23:33.31 get much better... I have a lady which has 00:23:33.34\00:23:35.78 ulcerative colitis, which is really bad. 00:23:35.81\00:23:38.01 We have proven by the...some tests how bad it was 00:23:38.05\00:23:43.12 and I told her what to do, she change everything and she 00:23:43.15\00:23:47.86 become better, after a while she went back to her previous 00:23:47.89\00:23:52.39 lifestyle...I said Sorry! I said you start again, 00:23:52.43\00:23:56.40 there's nothing else that you can do so you have to do it 00:23:56.43\00:23:59.00 by yourself. That is the problem with the lifestyle medicine, 00:23:59.03\00:24:01.74 it's involving the patient. The patient has to do the 00:24:01.77\00:24:06.21 change, not the...I cannot do it for you. I can recommend it, 00:24:06.24\00:24:12.11 to you. But you have to do, so you have to do a hard work. 00:24:12.15\00:24:15.42 You know most of the patients say my cardiologist, 00:24:15.45\00:24:19.02 my gastroenterologist, what about you? 00:24:19.05\00:24:21.69 Where's your responsibility? So that's where the problem... 00:24:21.72\00:24:24.89 comes back to the patient. If you want to do the change, 00:24:24.93\00:24:30.37 you'll have the benefits. 00:24:30.40\00:24:33.03 But your support has played a big role, I do know that because 00:24:33.07\00:24:36.60 I was just speaking to one of the other patients just before 00:24:36.64\00:24:39.31 we started filming and they said look, your support played 00:24:39.34\00:24:43.85 a huge role because they had already understood 00:24:43.88\00:24:46.65 the kinds of things that you're recommending, but really didn't 00:24:46.68\00:24:50.42 feel well enough to just, you know, to embrace it to get 00:24:50.45\00:24:54.92 hold of it and it was because of you and your ongoing support 00:24:54.96\00:24:58.36 and your kindness, your under standing, your empathy, 00:24:58.39\00:25:01.20 all those beautiful attributes that you have, you don't just 00:25:01.23\00:25:04.40 have the good advice. But as a beautiful doctor and a lovely 00:25:04.43\00:25:08.14 bedside manner as we call it, has played a really big role 00:25:08.17\00:25:12.11 and I think that needs to be acknowledged. Absolutely. 00:25:12.14\00:25:15.08 Thank you, but what I tried to do, I tried to explain a 00:25:15.11\00:25:20.58 bit of physiology which is going behind because you have to 00:25:20.62\00:25:24.55 make the people understand what's going on, why I have to 00:25:24.59\00:25:28.69 do this. And you explain, if you do this, you will have this 00:25:28.72\00:25:31.99 outcome. If you don't do this, you'll go...That's what Thomas 00:25:32.03\00:25:36.90 Edison said, you explain about the cause and prevention of 00:25:36.93\00:25:39.87 disease and treatment. So you are doing all of that, that's 00:25:39.90\00:25:43.17 wonderful. Most of the time I was just given the pain killer 00:25:43.20\00:25:47.08 to stop the pain. No one really bothered to know the cause of 00:25:47.11\00:25:52.11 the pain, to get rid of the cause and there would be no more 00:25:52.15\00:25:56.12 pain. That is what is lifestyle medicine. Lifestyle medicine 00:25:56.15\00:25:59.45 treats the cause of the problem. 00:25:59.49\00:26:01.82 We try to address the cause because 00:26:01.86\00:26:04.19 as you address the cause all that won't come back. 00:26:04.23\00:26:07.46 Absolutely, it's amazing. I encourage anyone who has any 00:26:07.50\00:26:13.97 kind of problem, to try it and they will see a lot of benefits 00:26:14.00\00:26:20.48 out of that. I've been there, I have taken such a beating 00:26:20.51\00:26:25.71 but the body does recover if you feed it the right diet. 00:26:25.75\00:26:32.05 And it's not a diet, it's a change of life. That's right. 00:26:32.09\00:26:36.99 You know, I've come across something, so there are other 00:26:37.03\00:26:39.79 places out there practicing lifestyle medicine and I 00:26:39.83\00:26:42.90 noticed this recently. There was a study in San Francisco 00:26:42.93\00:26:46.43 and they provided people who had either diabetes or HIV 00:26:46.47\00:26:50.51 in that particular case, those two, diabetes, HIV, 100% of 00:26:50.54\00:26:54.54 their dietary requirements for six months along with 00:26:54.58\00:26:58.55 nutritional counseling, a lot like you're doing... 00:26:58.58\00:27:00.72 and in that study it was estimated that it costs about 00:27:00.75\00:27:04.55 half as much to feed people for six months as to spend 00:27:04.59\00:27:09.26 half a day in the hospital. Amazing, and that's why they are 00:27:09.29\00:27:12.83 doing it, that's why they are doing it. Because it's working 00:27:12.86\00:27:15.63 and six months free food and nutritional counseling 00:27:15.66\00:27:20.17 and it costs them half as much. Yeah, it costs half as much 00:27:20.20\00:27:26.94 as one day in the hospital. Incredible. 00:27:26.98\00:27:29.58 So it's good for the health care system and it's definitely 00:27:29.61\00:27:34.42 good for the patient. -Yes, for the patient, very much. 00:27:34.45\00:27:37.05 What would you...Just in closing Dr. Coralia, what would you say 00:27:37.09\00:27:40.89 to people that they who maybe one of the 30% who like Leila 00:27:40.92\00:27:45.79 and the 60% that say ah, no. What would you say? -Try. 00:27:45.83\00:27:49.06 to them? Try to see the goodness of God. 00:27:49.10\00:27:52.03 You have to try, it is there for you. Do your best. 00:27:52.07\00:27:56.60 Do not reject what God gave us as a gift. Yeah. 00:27:56.64\00:28:00.51 We've been designed to eat plant based diet and we 00:28:00.54\00:28:04.75 have to keep going on plant based diet. 00:28:04.78\00:28:07.42 I think God is very full of surprises too with some of the 00:28:07.45\00:28:12.52 good things that He's put in the food. 00:28:12.55\00:28:14.16 So the take home message is that lifestyle choices have 00:28:14.19\00:28:17.66 by far the greatest impact on our health status, so be sure 00:28:17.69\00:28:22.26 to tune in to future programs to discover how to prevent 00:28:22.30\00:28:25.70 and reverse other diseases. Remember you can watch our 00:28:25.73\00:28:29.54 programs on demand, just visit 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:29.57\00:28:34.44 and click on the Watch button. God bless you. 00:28:34.48\00:28:37.51
