Welcome to "Healthy Living!" 00:00:15.28\00:00:16.61 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:16.64\00:00:18.35 Activated charcoal is used worldwide in hospital 00:00:18.38\00:00:22.08 emergency rooms to neutralize drugs and poisons. 00:00:22.12\00:00:26.02 And it's also useful though to have on hand 00:00:26.05\00:00:28.89 for a variety of everyday ailments. 00:00:28.92\00:00:31.29 Stay tuned for more on this amazing product. 00:00:31.33\00:00:35.10 Charcoal is able to adsorb thousands of times its 00:01:11.33\00:01:15.74 own weight in gases, heavy metals, poisons and chemicals 00:01:15.77\00:01:20.41 often making them ineffective. 00:01:20.44\00:01:22.41 So it's a very useful item to have in your first aid kit, 00:01:22.44\00:01:26.55 and for all sorts of common ailments. 00:01:26.58\00:01:29.25 Our guest, Dr. Eddie Ramirez, will tell us about this 00:01:29.28\00:01:31.99 amazing product and show us how to use it. 00:01:32.02\00:01:34.89 Welcome Eddie, lovely to have you on the program. 00:01:34.92\00:01:37.73 Thank you very much. 00:01:37.76\00:01:39.09 So what is charcoal? 00:01:39.13\00:01:41.16 I mean, is it just something that we've burnt some wood, 00:01:41.20\00:01:44.63 is that what we're talking about here? 00:01:44.67\00:01:47.14 No, not necessarily - charcoal is something 00:01:47.17\00:01:50.94 that in my opinion, every household should have 00:01:50.97\00:01:54.11 some of it and in a minute we'll talk about the different 00:01:54.14\00:01:56.81 forms that we can find it. 00:01:56.85\00:01:58.41 But what about "activated" charcoal? What's the difference? 00:01:58.45\00:02:01.88 But what charcoal is, is basically a vegetable that has 00:02:01.92\00:02:07.49 been burned completely. 00:02:07.52\00:02:10.23 And the best type of charcoal is actually made out of 00:02:10.26\00:02:14.23 hard wood - that's the one that makes the best charcoal. 00:02:14.26\00:02:18.97 And you were asking about "activated" charcoal. Yes. 00:02:19.00\00:02:22.20 As technology increased, we realized that if we put that 00:02:22.24\00:02:27.11 charcoal under high temperature and high pressure, 00:02:27.14\00:02:32.55 the charcoal particles actually becomes in the form of 00:02:32.58\00:02:38.42 a sphere and by becoming more spherical and by changing 00:02:38.45\00:02:45.13 their electric charges, they actually increase the ability 00:02:45.16\00:02:50.37 to adsorb much more things. 00:02:50.40\00:02:53.74 Yes, well it's amazing the capacity to adsorb, 00:02:53.77\00:02:58.01 it's really incredible! 00:02:58.04\00:02:59.44 But look it, you've done some research on this, 00:02:59.47\00:03:01.41 tell us about your research. 00:03:01.44\00:03:02.98 Yes, I presented a study in a "PhRMA" meeting, 00:03:03.01\00:03:12.25 and the reason why they were interested in this 00:03:12.29\00:03:14.26 PhRMA meeting about my study is because this PhRMA meeting 00:03:14.29\00:03:19.56 was interested in environmental toxins - things that are 00:03:19.59\00:03:25.27 foreign to the body and that cause damage. 00:03:25.30\00:03:27.54 That is called a "xenobiotic substance." 00:03:27.57\00:03:29.94 So here I was showing, in this study, how a spider bite, 00:03:29.97\00:03:35.94 one of the most poisonous spiders that you can find 00:03:35.98\00:03:41.15 is called the "brown recluse," or also is called the 00:03:41.18\00:03:46.05 "violinist spider" because if you notice in its very head 00:03:46.09\00:03:49.79 it has the form of a little violin. 00:03:49.82\00:03:53.73 And in this study we were showing how activated charcoal 00:03:53.76\00:04:00.70 was an excellent aid to the other treatments that 00:04:00.74\00:04:05.87 were being applied. 00:04:05.91\00:04:07.44 See, this spider is so poisonous, it is actually 00:04:07.48\00:04:11.28 more poisonous than a rattlesnake for example. 00:04:11.31\00:04:16.22 That sounds really bad to me! 00:04:16.25\00:04:18.05 Now usually you will not die of this spider bite, 00:04:18.09\00:04:21.99 but what this spider does, it has a poison 00:04:22.02\00:04:27.70 that destroys tissue. Oh. 00:04:27.73\00:04:30.23 And in some people when they get bitten by this, 00:04:30.27\00:04:33.34 if you want to see something incredible how this 00:04:33.37\00:04:37.34 can damage the tissues in the body, just Google 00:04:37.37\00:04:39.94 brown recluse bite and you will see it with your own eyes. 00:04:39.97\00:04:43.21 As this venom starts going to the tissues, in certain 00:04:43.24\00:04:48.48 people - not in everybody, the skin literally dies 00:04:48.52\00:04:54.49 and this becomes a huge problem because a little bite 00:04:54.52\00:04:58.89 can become a big, big problem and usually, 00:04:58.93\00:05:02.03 when you get bitten by this spider, you immediately 00:05:02.06\00:05:05.93 are not able to do much. 00:05:05.97\00:05:08.20 If it bites you in the leg, and in this case in was in the 00:05:08.24\00:05:12.37 feet where the spider where the bite happened. 00:05:12.41\00:05:17.45 The person cannot walk after that, 00:05:17.48\00:05:21.05 that's how tremendous this is. 00:05:21.08\00:05:22.65 The skin starts to change color and so forth, 00:05:22.68\00:05:24.85 so what we did - we started applying activated charcoal 00:05:24.89\00:05:29.56 fomentations and in a minute we will share with you 00:05:29.59\00:05:31.99 the demonstration on how to do this at home - we started 00:05:32.03\00:05:37.60 applying these fomentations every 6 hours continually. 00:05:37.63\00:05:42.87 And you know, usually somebody with this type of bite will 00:05:42.90\00:05:46.78 recover in 3, 4, 5 weeks. 00:05:46.81\00:05:50.15 In his published study that is going to be coming up 00:05:50.18\00:05:53.21 in the journal, "Drug Metabolism Review," 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.38 is called the name of the journal, the person was able 00:05:56.42\00:06:00.52 to actually run by the second week which is unheard of! 00:06:00.56\00:06:05.66 How can somebody recover so soon? 00:06:05.69\00:06:08.00 So we were actually proposing that as a standardized 00:06:08.03\00:06:12.77 treatment activated charcoal should be 00:06:12.80\00:06:16.07 applied for spider bites. 00:06:16.10\00:06:18.97 Now, I know that here in Australia, there are very 00:06:19.01\00:06:22.38 dangerous spiders; in fact, I actually caught a redback 00:06:22.41\00:06:27.22 just for the fun of it. 00:06:27.25\00:06:28.62 You caught it. I caught it. 00:06:28.65\00:06:30.19 That wasn't a good idea if you did it safely. 00:06:30.22\00:06:33.36 And also you're familiar with the funnel spider and so forth. 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.93 So I am not saying that if you get bitten by one of these 00:06:36.96\00:06:41.26 spiders, you just put charcoal on it and everything is 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.26 going to be fine - ABSOLUTELY NOT. 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.57 These are very dangerous spiders - you can apply the 00:06:45.60\00:06:48.84 charcoal but you run to the health professional to 00:06:48.87\00:06:53.27 continue with the care and so forth. 00:06:53.31\00:06:55.74 If you are in one of those desolate places which 00:06:55.78\00:06:59.08 there are many here in Australia and you're not able 00:06:59.11\00:07:01.98 to get medical care and you get one of these bites, 00:07:02.02\00:07:04.85 you can keep on applying that fomentation until you get 00:07:04.89\00:07:08.26 to a health professional and then you continue 00:07:08.29\00:07:11.26 with the therapy that is needed. 00:07:11.29\00:07:12.73 That sounds like good advice. 00:07:12.76\00:07:14.10 I'd like to know how it works. 00:07:14.13\00:07:15.73 How is it - what does charcoal actually do 00:07:15.76\00:07:18.90 that made that recovery so much quicker? 00:07:18.93\00:07:20.94 How does it work? 00:07:20.97\00:07:22.57 That's right, there are two key properties in charcoal. 00:07:22.60\00:07:27.08 You have absorption and you have adsorption. 00:07:27.11\00:07:32.65 Yes, what's the difference? 00:07:32.68\00:07:34.02 With "D" and with "B." Okay. 00:07:34.05\00:07:35.38 When it's with the "D," that tends to be 00:07:35.42\00:07:37.82 an electrical property. 00:07:37.85\00:07:39.72 See, when you are in the microscopic world, 00:07:39.75\00:07:44.73 electric charges make a big deal. 00:07:44.76\00:07:47.80 They have a big influence and the electric charges 00:07:47.83\00:07:53.07 as any magnet will attract things, in our world only 00:07:53.10\00:08:01.14 metals can be attracted to magnets. 00:08:01.18\00:08:03.88 Well, in the microscopic world, many other things 00:08:03.91\00:08:06.61 can be attracted with currents with magnets. 00:08:06.65\00:08:10.59 And then you have the other characteristic which 00:08:10.62\00:08:13.82 that one has to do with its ability to incorporate 00:08:13.86\00:08:18.63 the substance to the charcoal itself - so that's a more 00:08:18.66\00:08:23.53 chemical type of property. 00:08:23.57\00:08:26.33 So using those two properties, this will help. 00:08:26.37\00:08:30.01 And I also wanted to mention something - if you are in the 00:08:30.04\00:08:33.61 barbecue and you say, "Oh, well look at this, 00:08:33.64\00:08:36.64 I have some charcoal there that I'm using for my barbecue," 00:08:36.68\00:08:39.08 PLEASE DON'T USE THAT. 00:08:39.11\00:08:41.42 That charcoal that you buy in the stores for charbroiled 00:08:41.45\00:08:47.82 purposes and so forth, that one has chemicals! 00:08:47.86\00:08:51.79 That's the reason why when you put the match - immediately 00:08:51.83\00:08:54.73 it fires very quickly - DO NOT USE THAT. 00:08:54.76\00:08:57.40 Also, don't say, "Well I have here an old piece of bread, 00:08:57.43\00:09:01.80 I'm going to burn this and I'm going to make my own charcoal." 00:09:01.84\00:09:06.34 PLEASE DO NOT. 00:09:06.37\00:09:07.74 It needs to be completely burned and things that are 00:09:07.78\00:09:11.91 actually half burned - actually could be cancer-causing, 00:09:11.95\00:09:17.22 so it's not a very good idea. 00:09:17.25\00:09:19.09 So where do we access the charcoal - the sort of 00:09:19.12\00:09:22.06 stuff that we're going to be using for this purpose. 00:09:22.09\00:09:24.36 That's right, so you find different formats. 00:09:24.39\00:09:26.96 This you can find sometimes your chemist may have it; 00:09:27.00\00:09:31.53 sometimes in your health food store - sometimes you can 00:09:31.57\00:09:35.60 find it there and actually you may want to give us a ring 00:09:35.64\00:09:39.37 here and we can actually give you some tips here 00:09:39.41\00:09:41.51 at 3ABN on where you can find it. 00:09:41.54\00:09:43.48 And a disclaimer - I don't sell charcoal at all, I am doing this 00:09:43.51\00:09:49.15 because I know it is very effective. 00:09:49.18\00:09:52.52 In fact, as you mentioned very well in the introduction 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.29 of this program - charcoal is something we find in the 00:09:56.32\00:10:02.63 emergency department. 00:10:02.66\00:10:04.33 I remember one time, I was the physician in charge of the 00:10:04.37\00:10:07.94 emergency department and you know, a particular day that 00:10:07.97\00:10:12.27 I remember very well, most of the things that came that day 00:10:12.31\00:10:16.78 I could fix with charcoal. 00:10:16.81\00:10:19.21 You know there were some diarrheas and a little 00:10:19.25\00:10:22.88 insect bite and so forth and I actually ended up 00:10:22.92\00:10:27.22 using the most of the charcoal of the emergency department, 00:10:27.26\00:10:30.53 the nurses got upset with me. 00:10:30.56\00:10:32.13 But they needed the charcoal, not medication 00:10:32.16\00:10:35.60 in that particular occasion. 00:10:35.63\00:10:37.20 Well it's really nice to hear this coming from a medical 00:10:37.23\00:10:39.73 practitioner because sometimes when something 00:10:39.77\00:10:42.00 is unfamiliar to people, they might think, 00:10:42.04\00:10:44.24 "I'm not really sure about that," and that fact 00:10:44.27\00:10:47.74 that it was in the hospital too, it shows that it's 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.38 something that they use. 00:10:50.41\00:10:51.75 They use it for overdoses, don't they? 00:10:51.78\00:10:53.35 That's right, there are many indications that in the 00:10:53.38\00:10:57.42 official guidelines you use charcoal! 00:10:57.45\00:11:00.49 You said one very well - in certain cases for certain 00:11:00.52\00:11:04.39 substances that have been overdosed, you can introduce 00:11:04.43\00:11:07.50 charcoal to the stomach, the charcoal will help to 00:11:07.53\00:11:10.27 bind those toxic substances preventing those substances 00:11:10.30\00:11:14.84 to continue further in your system 00:11:14.87\00:11:16.57 and causing some damage and so forth. 00:11:16.60\00:11:19.07 So I guess it's not a good idea to have charcoal 00:11:19.11\00:11:21.88 if you've just had medication or something like that. 00:11:21.91\00:11:24.45 Absolutely! A very good point! 00:11:24.48\00:11:26.38 Charcoal absorbs a lot of things including your medication. 00:11:26.41\00:11:31.62 So please, if you are taking medication and especially 00:11:31.65\00:11:35.19 delicate medication like blood pressure, heart medication, 00:11:35.22\00:11:39.33 diabetes - if you take the charcoal too close to the 00:11:39.36\00:11:43.57 time when you take the medication, the charcoal 00:11:43.60\00:11:46.13 will bind that medication and it's as if you did not 00:11:46.17\00:11:50.27 have the medication and there can be 00:11:50.31\00:11:52.57 a little bit of a problem - so just beware of that. 00:11:52.61\00:11:56.38 How much apart, I would advise you if you're going to be 00:11:56.41\00:12:00.42 taking it orally between 2 hours or so. Alright. 00:12:00.45\00:12:04.62 Now what do we use charcoal for? 00:12:04.65\00:12:07.56 Well let me tell you how you find it. 00:12:07.59\00:12:10.59 Usually you're going to find it in three forms, the charcoal. 00:12:10.63\00:12:14.30 You're going to find it in little capsules, 00:12:14.33\00:12:18.33 you're going to find it in tablets, 00:12:18.37\00:12:20.70 and you're going to find it in powder. 00:12:20.74\00:12:24.44 Personally, I like the best the powder format 00:12:24.47\00:12:28.31 because it's very easy to do many things. 00:12:28.34\00:12:32.95 In the capsules, the amount of charcoal is less charcoal 00:12:34.82\00:12:39.22 and that's why if you ask me to choose between 00:12:39.25\00:12:43.66 the tablets and the powder, I would go for the tablets 00:12:43.69\00:12:47.20 if I'm traveling and it's easy to carry with you and so forth. 00:12:47.23\00:12:51.00 But at home, it's a good idea to have some of that 00:12:51.03\00:12:53.23 activated charcoal in powder format. 00:12:53.27\00:12:56.91 Now what would we use that powder charcoal if we want to 00:12:56.94\00:13:02.88 take it orally? 00:13:02.91\00:13:04.25 Well we would use it for things like indigestion, 00:13:04.28\00:13:08.78 for things like gas - okay there are times, you know, 00:13:08.82\00:13:13.42 you go out and you go and eat, and things don't agree 00:13:13.46\00:13:17.26 very good with you, you can try some of this charcoal 00:13:17.29\00:13:22.33 and see if it's improving your problem. 00:13:22.36\00:13:26.27 That's to drink it. That's right. 00:13:26.30\00:13:28.20 We're talking about, right now, the oral format to drink it. 00:13:28.24\00:13:32.41 And in a minute we will show you how you can actually 00:13:32.44\00:13:35.04 prepare it. Yes, that would be good. 00:13:35.08\00:13:37.05 So you would use it in those cases and I just want to 00:13:37.51\00:13:42.85 give you a little warning - if the abdomen is hard; 00:13:42.88\00:13:48.86 if it's a lot of pain in the abdominal area, 00:13:48.89\00:13:52.83 please don't say, "Oh charcoal is going to take care of me." 00:13:52.86\00:13:55.83 You call your emergency services because 00:13:55.86\00:13:59.93 this could be an emergency! 00:14:00.00\00:14:01.87 Now if you're in the boonies, far from cities and something, 00:14:01.90\00:14:05.71 you could start with something but if you have close by 00:14:05.74\00:14:10.95 access, please do. 00:14:10.98\00:14:12.31 So let's go ahead and see the demonstration on how 00:14:12.35\00:14:14.65 you can use this charcoal. 00:14:14.68\00:14:17.45 So we're very grateful to have a therapist with us, 00:14:17.49\00:14:23.16 and what she is going to do is she's going to use 00:14:23.19\00:14:26.70 2 tablespoons of charcoal, thank you, and then you 00:14:26.73\00:14:32.13 put it in water and very carefully do the mixture 00:14:32.17\00:14:36.60 because it can get messy. 00:14:36.64\00:14:38.01 And it's a good idea to use a straw if you don't want to 00:14:38.04\00:14:41.88 get the charcoal in your mouth, and the taste of charcoal 00:14:41.91\00:14:47.18 is actually a no-taste, it doesn't taste like anything. 00:14:47.22\00:14:52.15 You can drink it without the straw, it's fine, no problem, 00:14:52.19\00:14:56.99 but if you prefer to be a little bit less messy, 00:14:57.03\00:15:00.00 you can use the straw. 00:15:00.03\00:15:02.76 And you need to use common sense - you just drank 00:15:02.80\00:15:05.87 something black - so when you go to the restroom, 00:15:05.90\00:15:09.50 you're going to see that your feces are going to become black, 00:15:09.54\00:15:13.44 so it's okay, it's normal, nothing to worry about. 00:15:13.48\00:15:18.98 And this charcoal is something that you can use it, 00:15:19.01\00:15:26.42 be careful when you are handling it because of its electrical 00:15:26.45\00:15:30.63 properties - it tends to fly quite a bit. 00:15:30.66\00:15:33.60 If you hit it in the wrong angle, it flies and it's messy. 00:15:33.63\00:15:37.57 It can stain your clothes very easily - so just beware 00:15:37.60\00:15:43.00 of those things. 00:15:43.04\00:15:45.07 Now not only can you drink it orally, but you can also 00:15:45.11\00:15:51.18 apply the charcoal directly on the skin. 00:15:51.21\00:15:54.95 Now why would you do that? 00:15:54.98\00:15:56.35 What would prompt you to do that? 00:15:56.38\00:15:59.15 There are many indications for that - when an insect bites you, 00:15:59.19\00:16:04.96 you know, you have bees here in Australia; you have hornets, 00:16:04.99\00:16:10.13 and when you receive one of these bites from one of these 00:16:10.17\00:16:14.54 creatures, what charcoal does when you put it on the skin 00:16:14.57\00:16:18.47 it helps to absorb the poison. Oh. 00:16:18.51\00:16:22.34 Now if the person is allergic and starts having 00:16:22.38\00:16:25.98 a severe allergic response as a result of this, 00:16:26.01\00:16:30.49 please don't say, "Oh just charcoal and that's enough." 00:16:30.52\00:16:33.09 You need to call the emergency department. 00:16:33.12\00:16:35.42 Now when you're saying, "An allergic response," 00:16:35.46\00:16:38.59 that wouldn't be to the charcoal, that's to the bite. 00:16:38.63\00:16:40.50 That's to the bite, that's right. 00:16:40.53\00:16:41.86 The person starts having problems breathing, 00:16:41.90\00:16:44.67 the whole body starts getting full of reaction, 00:16:44.70\00:16:48.44 I mean that's severe, you call the 00:16:48.47\00:16:50.37 emergency department. 00:16:50.41\00:16:51.74 Absolutely, I just want to be clear that the charcoal 00:16:51.77\00:16:54.18 wouldn't cause that sort of reaction. That's right. 00:16:54.21\00:16:55.91 And also, beware if the skin is open and you apply 00:16:55.94\00:17:03.22 the charcoal, you can have a little tattoo in your skin, 00:17:03.25\00:17:08.82 so make judgment, you know, would I rather have a 00:17:08.86\00:17:12.36 little tattoo-type of mark with the charcoal 00:17:12.39\00:17:17.43 or should I rather do something else - so just beware 00:17:18.57\00:17:21.30 of that if the skin is open. 00:17:21.34\00:17:23.07 That only happens if the skin is open. 00:17:23.10\00:17:25.57 So we're going to ask our therapist to help us 00:17:25.61\00:17:29.18 demonstrate how you use this activated poultice on the skin. 00:17:29.21\00:17:38.92 So what she's going to do, she has the powdered charcoal, 00:17:38.95\00:17:43.29 she is going to add it to a place to be mixed, 00:17:43.32\00:17:46.83 then we're going to add a little bit of water. 00:17:46.86\00:17:50.57 You can add a little bit of ground flaxseed, 00:17:50.60\00:17:52.93 and I'll explain that in a minute. 00:17:52.97\00:17:54.60 Then she carefully is going to mix this and then you have 00:17:54.64\00:17:59.61 a paper towel and you apply that mixture on the 00:17:59.64\00:18:06.45 paper towel - distribute it well and then it's a good idea 00:18:06.48\00:18:13.79 to protect the area because, as I said, charcoal can be 00:18:13.82\00:18:17.53 a little bit messy. 00:18:17.56\00:18:18.89 He has a little hornet bite that he received 00:18:18.93\00:18:23.77 a few minutes ago, so he is going to receive that poultice 00:18:23.80\00:18:29.94 and, if you notice, we put a little bit of plastic there 00:18:29.97\00:18:33.27 so it can keep the charcoal and then we apply 00:18:33.31\00:18:36.18 a little bit of Ace bandage so that it can keep nice 00:18:36.21\00:18:40.12 and in one place instead of going all over the place. 00:18:40.15\00:18:43.82 I'd also like to invite you to pray as you apply 00:18:43.85\00:18:47.49 these simple remedies, it works much better 00:18:47.52\00:18:50.63 in my personal experience. Yeah, that's beautiful. 00:18:50.66\00:18:52.96 And you know, I mentioned ground flaxseed - so the ground 00:18:52.99\00:18:58.37 flaxseed what it does to the charcoal mixture is it helps 00:18:58.40\00:19:03.30 to give it a little bit more consistency. 00:19:03.34\00:19:06.68 If you don't use the flaxseed like in this example, 00:19:06.71\00:19:11.61 what's going to happen is that as the charcoal gets 00:19:11.65\00:19:16.22 dry, it can even become a little bit powdery, 00:19:16.25\00:19:19.75 it can be a little bit messy and also the charcoal poultice 00:19:19.79\00:19:25.56 made with the ground flaxseed would give a little 00:19:25.59\00:19:31.43 bit better consistency. 00:19:31.47\00:19:33.13 As I tell people, I like to have the consistency of 00:19:33.17\00:19:37.61 peanut butter - so go ahead and do a little bit of 00:19:37.64\00:19:41.88 experimentation about 1 tablespoon of charcoal 00:19:41.91\00:19:46.58 with another tablespoon of ground flaxseed, 00:19:46.61\00:19:50.79 with enough water so that you can have 00:19:50.82\00:19:53.96 that type of peanut butter consistency. 00:19:53.99\00:19:55.86 If you don't have the flaxseed, don't worry, use it as 00:19:55.89\00:19:58.96 an example that we just showed. 00:19:58.99\00:20:00.46 So it's the charcoal that does the work, flaxseed is just 00:20:03.06\00:20:06.67 to make it so that it doesn't go dry and crumbly, 00:20:06.70\00:20:09.70 and if you are having it on all night, for example, 00:20:09.74\00:20:12.37 it might not be so messy. 00:20:12.41\00:20:14.58 That's right because this also can be applied 00:20:14.61\00:20:17.71 to bigger areas like your abdomen. Yes. 00:20:17.75\00:20:20.48 You know those times when you are a little bit too gassy 00:20:20.52\00:20:25.29 and so forth, you can apply it on the skin of the abdomen 00:20:25.32\00:20:31.66 and that will help things get better. 00:20:31.69\00:20:34.46 So are you saying that if you had problems with gas, 00:20:34.50\00:20:37.90 you could either have it orally, drinking it or you could 00:20:37.93\00:20:41.00 actually put it on the outside of your abdomen? 00:20:41.04\00:20:42.47 Or you can actually do the double one - you drink and 00:20:42.50\00:20:46.34 you apply. 00:20:46.37\00:20:48.58 I guess it depends on how big a problem you have. That's right. 00:20:48.61\00:20:51.21 But isn't that remarkable that you could actually 00:20:51.25\00:20:53.11 apply - it would obviously be a large area to put it on, 00:20:53.15\00:20:57.02 and that would actually draw out the gas. That's right! 00:20:57.05\00:21:00.49 It's fantastic! It helps the abdomen feel much better. 00:21:00.52\00:21:04.93 Irritable colon syndrome, this type of problem - these also 00:21:04.96\00:21:12.80 respond very well - by personal experience 00:21:12.83\00:21:16.94 I can testify of that. 00:21:16.97\00:21:19.87 And this charcoal is very useful as you can see, 00:21:19.91\00:21:24.41 so use your creativity, you know, and just make sure 00:21:24.45\00:21:30.22 when you're applying it, if you're going to be there 00:21:30.25\00:21:32.32 overnight with the poultice, be careful that the charcoal 00:21:32.35\00:21:36.32 doesn't go to your sheets and things 00:21:36.36\00:21:37.99 because it can stain them. 00:21:38.03\00:21:40.00 And it's a good idea also, if it's that type of condition, 00:21:40.03\00:21:44.17 it's a spider bite that is taking a little bit longer to 00:21:44.20\00:21:48.04 recover, as you change every 3 hours, every 6 hours, 00:21:48.07\00:21:53.38 you need to discard that old charcoal because it has 00:21:53.41\00:21:56.95 already adsorbed things and so forth, so be careful with that. 00:21:56.98\00:22:04.15 Well it's a remarkable product and it seems to be so 00:22:04.19\00:22:07.16 versatile doesn't it - to think that you can use it 00:22:07.19\00:22:09.79 internally and externally and for all kinds of things, 00:22:09.82\00:22:14.56 even a snakebite I suppose. 00:22:14.60\00:22:16.40 That's right, it won't heal the snake bite but while you 00:22:16.43\00:22:21.40 get to the E.R., you know, you can apply a poultice 00:22:21.44\00:22:25.54 like that, you know? Yes. 00:22:25.57\00:22:26.98 And if you notice, this is something quickly 00:22:27.01\00:22:29.71 that you can do. That's right. 00:22:29.74\00:22:31.78 That's right and I was very interested that you just 00:22:31.81\00:22:35.15 use the charcoal on a paper towel with things you would 00:22:35.18\00:22:38.32 already have in the kitchen as long as you've got charcoal. 00:22:38.35\00:22:41.42 So you can use that and not everybody is going to have 00:22:41.46\00:22:44.99 flaxseed and that's why we've particularly chose 00:22:45.03\00:22:47.03 not to do that - you can do it either way, 00:22:47.06\00:22:49.13 but they'll both work. That's right, both will work 00:22:49.16\00:22:52.73 very good. The other will just give 00:22:52.77\00:22:54.10 a better consistency and give you a better outcome. Yes. 00:22:54.14\00:22:57.31 And also make sure that you're not taking it 00:22:57.34\00:23:02.71 too close to your meals also unless the problem was the 00:23:02.74\00:23:07.05 meal per se, you know, you can go ahead and take it. 00:23:07.08\00:23:11.39 But I'm not saying that this is something you should be 00:23:11.42\00:23:13.99 doing every day - that wouldn't be a good idea. 00:23:14.02\00:23:16.96 If you take it too close to your meals, 00:23:16.99\00:23:20.16 it will literally start to absorb the nutrients 00:23:20.20\00:23:23.90 of your food, so be very careful for that. 00:23:23.93\00:23:29.20 So you should weigh out what's more important, 00:23:29.24\00:23:31.14 you know, whether you can afford to miss the 00:23:31.17\00:23:32.74 nutrients from that meal as opposed to the 00:23:32.77\00:23:35.04 problem that you're experiencing. 00:23:35.08\00:23:36.71 And the speed that it works is so fast, you know, 00:23:36.75\00:23:43.18 you will quickly get some relief. 00:23:43.22\00:23:46.25 Now in the case of diarrhea, if the diarrhea, you've seen 00:23:46.29\00:23:50.93 with your eyes that it has blood and lots of mucus, 00:23:50.96\00:23:54.10 and this type of problem, you call your health 00:23:54.13\00:23:57.47 professional - you know, charcoal may not be enough 00:23:57.50\00:24:00.57 for this type of problem. 00:24:00.60\00:24:02.00 But the type of diarrhea you get, you ate something 00:24:02.04\00:24:05.57 you shouldn't have and you are having some diarrhea, 00:24:05.61\00:24:08.21 you can use some charcoal for this type of problem. 00:24:08.24\00:24:12.75 It's certainly a good thing to have when you're traveling. 00:24:12.78\00:24:15.38 You know, especially to countries where you might not 00:24:15.42\00:24:17.52 be able to get, you know, easy help and if you 00:24:17.55\00:24:20.46 run into that kind of difficulty - you get sick, 00:24:20.49\00:24:23.36 vomiting or diarrhea, it's great to have it there, 00:24:23.39\00:24:26.19 and you can be using it or be getting some other help. 00:24:26.23\00:24:29.10 And another hint I want to give you - in certain people 00:24:29.13\00:24:33.27 charcoal tends to constipate, so in order to help you 00:24:33.30\00:24:38.67 with that, as you're taking the charcoal, go ahead 00:24:38.71\00:24:42.31 and drink more water. 00:24:42.34\00:24:44.01 And you know, it's not only one time that you can 00:24:44.05\00:24:46.61 drink it, you can drink this charcoal 1, 2, 3, even 4 times 00:24:46.65\00:24:51.92 in a short period of time of half an hour - an hour 00:24:51.95\00:24:57.66 if the problem is continuing. 00:24:57.69\00:25:00.40 Now if this, after a few hours, is not improving or is getting 00:25:00.43\00:25:06.27 worse, you call your health professional, you know. 00:25:06.30\00:25:10.21 Also another tip that I want to give you - when you 00:25:10.24\00:25:14.44 have a case in which somebody drinks, by mistake 00:25:14.48\00:25:19.51 or by purpose, the wrong type of thing and you call 00:25:19.55\00:25:22.95 Poison Control, it's a good idea to volunteer the information, 00:25:22.98\00:25:28.92 "Look, I have some charcoal here, could I 00:25:28.96\00:25:31.49 give him some charcoal?" 00:25:31.53\00:25:32.86 And those people that have been professionally trained 00:25:32.89\00:25:37.93 to give you advice - they may say, "Yes, go ahead 00:25:37.97\00:25:41.34 and give him some charcoal." 00:25:41.37\00:25:44.67 There are many poisons that would benefit if you take 00:25:44.71\00:25:50.11 that charcoal and when you're being guided by a professional 00:25:50.15\00:25:53.35 like Poison Control, that would be very useful. 00:25:53.38\00:25:56.18 But it's not a decision that you make yourself, 00:25:56.22\00:25:58.22 you get that professional advice before you administer. 00:25:58.25\00:26:00.62 That's right, when this is something poisonous 00:26:00.66\00:26:03.12 and dangerous and so forth, please seek professional help, 00:26:03.16\00:26:09.70 ask these people who are specially trained. 00:26:09.73\00:26:12.80 There are special guidelines that are used and 00:26:12.83\00:26:17.34 followed to help you make those decisions. Yes. 00:26:17.37\00:26:20.41 Charcoal has been used for thousands of years, hasn't it? 00:26:20.44\00:26:22.84 Absolutely! 00:26:22.88\00:26:24.21 It's not just a brand new thing, but it's probably 00:26:24.25\00:26:27.08 something we haven't used as well as we might have 00:26:27.12\00:26:30.09 or been as aware of as it would be useful to be aware of. 00:26:30.12\00:26:33.52 So I'm really pleased that you've talked to us about this, 00:26:33.56\00:26:36.19 and as I said, because you're a medical doctor and that 00:26:36.22\00:26:39.69 you're endorsing it and that they use it in the 00:26:39.73\00:26:42.33 emergency department, it certainly helps us to be 00:26:42.36\00:26:44.50 confident that this is a great thing to have. 00:26:44.53\00:26:47.60 I have three daughters and, I mean, they already know. 00:26:47.64\00:26:52.37 When they eat and something doesn't agree, "Daddy, 00:26:52.41\00:26:56.98 where's the charcoal, I need some charcoal." 00:26:57.01\00:27:00.15 And they already know as we have been using it for them 00:27:00.18\00:27:05.39 for bites and things that kids get and so forth. 00:27:05.42\00:27:09.06 So it is something very, very useful. 00:27:09.09\00:27:12.96 In my opinion, every household should have some of this 00:27:12.99\00:27:16.53 activated charcoal. Yes! 00:27:16.56\00:27:18.33 I keep it, I have it on hand at all times. 00:27:18.37\00:27:20.84 Rarely really need to use it, but I always want to have it 00:27:20.87\00:27:23.71 there because you never know when it just might be needed. 00:27:23.74\00:27:26.01 That's right. I always have some in my 00:27:26.04\00:27:28.24 toilet bag when I travel there's some there ready to go 00:27:28.28\00:27:32.41 so that I don't miss out.
