Welcome to "Healthy Living!" 00:00:14.51\00:00:16.54 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:16.91\00:00:18.25 Hydrotherapy has been used for thousands of years 00:00:18.28\00:00:21.72 to bring relief from many ailments. 00:00:21.75\00:00:23.79 Today, Dr. Eddie Ramirez explains hydrotherapy, 00:00:23.82\00:00:27.19 and we'll show you some simple treatments that you can 00:00:27.22\00:00:29.72 do at home. 00:00:29.76\00:00:32.36 We are privileged today to have Dr. Eddie Ramirez help us 00:01:07.60\00:01:10.87 understand the amazing benefits of hydrotherapy 00:01:10.90\00:01:14.14 or water treatments if you like. 00:01:14.17\00:01:16.00 Welcome to the program Eddie! Thank you very much. 00:01:16.04\00:01:18.37 We are really looking forward to having you 00:01:18.41\00:01:19.74 tell us how to treat these ailments. 00:01:19.77\00:01:21.84 Well hydrotherapy is something that has been used 00:01:21.88\00:01:25.85 for a long period of time. 00:01:25.88\00:01:28.38 In fact, I remember recently I had a long layover in 00:01:28.42\00:01:31.59 England and so I was trying to figure out what I was 00:01:31.62\00:01:34.79 going to do with my time, but my top two options 00:01:34.82\00:01:37.79 ended up being in Stonehenge and Bath, England which is a 00:01:37.83\00:01:42.00 place the Romans used to use for hydrotherapy. 00:01:42.03\00:01:45.87 Unfortunately, the closest one was Stonehenge so that's 00:01:45.90\00:01:49.04 why I went there, but one of these days I'll end up 00:01:49.07\00:01:52.81 going to Bath. 00:01:52.84\00:01:54.18 But anywhere you go, you always 00:01:54.21\00:01:56.04 find these hot springs around the world. Yes. 00:01:56.08\00:02:00.25 And people have realized there are benefits of using these 00:02:00.28\00:02:05.09 hot springs. 00:02:05.12\00:02:06.52 What happens with hydrotherapy is that there is nothing 00:02:06.55\00:02:10.46 magic about the water per se, but it is the manipulation 00:02:10.49\00:02:15.63 of the heat through water - so some researchers actually 00:02:15.66\00:02:20.74 have proposed that the correct name of this modality 00:02:20.77\00:02:24.67 should be "hydrothermal therapy" because you are 00:02:24.71\00:02:29.64 manipulating heat with water. 00:02:29.68\00:02:31.25 Yes that sounds like a really good, you know, way to call it. 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.98 And you know, the reason why this is so effective is that 00:02:35.02\00:02:40.26 the largest organ in the body is the skin and the skin has an 00:02:40.29\00:02:47.40 effect on blood vessels and even internal organs 00:02:47.43\00:02:53.50 as we will be learning today. 00:02:53.54\00:02:55.10 You're going to learn quite a bit of information, 00:02:55.14\00:02:57.87 so I encourage you to stay tuned as we will be 00:02:57.91\00:03:01.41 learning the principles of hydrotherapy. 00:03:01.44\00:03:04.15 We even have some volunteers here that will help us 00:03:04.18\00:03:06.95 apply these treatments so you can see 00:03:06.98\00:03:09.48 how it's done. Oh excellent! 00:03:09.52\00:03:11.59 And when talking about the properties of water, 00:03:11.62\00:03:16.06 let's just understand a small concept. 00:03:16.09\00:03:19.79 There is a measurement of energy that we use 00:03:19.83\00:03:23.26 in physics that is called "the calorie," and in order to 00:03:23.30\00:03:28.40 raise 1 cubic centimeter of water 1 degree, 00:03:28.44\00:03:35.78 I'm going to be requiring 1 calorie, okay? 00:03:35.81\00:03:40.95 So water has the capacity to store tremendous amounts 00:03:40.98\00:03:47.22 of energy - that is why water is so useful in hydrotherapy. 00:03:47.26\00:03:51.73 For example, if you have ever been in a place where 00:03:51.76\00:03:55.46 there is snow, you will notice that even though it 00:03:55.50\00:04:00.84 snowed a few days ago and the temperature 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.97 is above zero degrees, still many times there is snow 00:04:04.01\00:04:10.05 on the ground - how come that happens? 00:04:10.08\00:04:13.35 Well, it's because you require in order to melt 1 centimeter 00:04:13.38\00:04:19.92 of snow, in order to melt it into liquid, you're going to 00:04:20.12\00:04:24.56 need 79.2 calories. 00:04:24.59\00:04:28.13 See, you needs lots of energy, the water is able to store 00:04:28.16\00:04:34.87 this heat and then the opposite also happens and I'm sure 00:04:34.90\00:04:37.87 many women that have been cooking, 00:04:37.91\00:04:41.51 they have experienced this. 00:04:41.54\00:04:42.91 They open the pan where the water is boiling, 00:04:42.94\00:04:47.08 the steam comes up and what happens? 00:04:47.12\00:04:49.15 Oh I know, I know what happens. 00:04:49.42\00:04:52.05 When we first got married, I wanted stainless 00:04:52.09\00:04:55.06 steel saucepans, I was determined to have them 00:04:55.09\00:04:57.46 and couldn't afford them straight away, so I thought 00:04:57.49\00:05:00.20 if I buy cheap saucepans, I won't want to throw them out. 00:05:00.23\00:05:02.73 So I used basins, enamel basins with a plate on the top. 00:05:03.23\00:05:08.20 Each time I would look into see if it was cooked, 00:05:08.24\00:05:11.91 that steam came out and I just had burns on my arms 00:05:11.94\00:05:15.31 for a long time before I figured out how to, 00:05:15.34\00:05:17.31 yes, it really does burn. 00:05:17.35\00:05:19.51 The reason why is because you are releasing 537 calories. 00:05:19.55\00:05:26.65 So within less than a second, you will get a nice burn there, 00:05:26.69\00:05:33.60 (Oh yes, a very nice burn!) 00:05:33.63\00:05:35.66 as a result of steam converting from gas into liquid. 00:05:35.70\00:05:40.87 So this is something very unique about water, 00:05:40.90\00:05:43.61 the ability to concentrate that energy. 00:05:43.64\00:05:47.74 So that's escaping - all that extra heat is just 00:05:47.78\00:05:51.51 escaping out of the water. 00:05:51.55\00:05:53.38 That's right, as it converts from steam to water, 00:05:53.42\00:05:56.75 it releases that energy. 00:05:56.79\00:05:58.72 If your skin happens to be there, that energy 00:05:58.75\00:06:02.12 goes ahead and hits your skin. 00:06:02.16\00:06:03.93 That's why you get burned. 00:06:03.96\00:06:06.09 And also we have another quality in hydrotherapy which 00:06:06.13\00:06:11.30 is called "the conducting capacity." 00:06:11.33\00:06:13.34 We can actually see this on the screen. 00:06:13.37\00:06:16.60 The conducting capacity of water is 27 times more than 00:06:16.64\00:06:23.21 of air - that's why if you are in 23 degrees centigrade 00:06:23.24\00:06:29.48 outside, the day feels very nice, 00:06:29.52\00:06:32.59 the temperature is wonderful. 00:06:32.65\00:06:33.99 Yet if you jump into a bathtub with 23 degrees, 00:06:34.02\00:06:40.10 you're going to feel that it is quite chilly. 00:06:40.13\00:06:42.86 You will feel very uncomfortable. 00:06:42.90\00:06:44.77 How come you're comfortable outside in the air, 00:06:44.80\00:06:48.04 but not in the water? 00:06:48.07\00:06:49.70 Because of the ability to transmit that much efficiently. 00:06:49.74\00:06:55.74 Wow, that explains it really well because, you're right, 00:06:55.78\00:06:59.01 I remember once doing some hydrotherapy and the pool was 00:06:59.05\00:07:02.38 16 degrees and you wouldn't think that would be as 00:07:02.42\00:07:04.69 cold as it is, I'm telling you... 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.12 Yes that is very cold! 00:07:06.15\00:07:08.46 Very cold but in air temperature it's not, so the water has 00:07:08.49\00:07:12.86 this capacity to conduct temperature. That's right! 00:07:12.89\00:07:16.73 Also there is a law that we can have in mind when 00:07:16.77\00:07:21.54 we are doing hydrotherapy treatments and this is called, 00:07:21.57\00:07:26.47 "Van't Hoff's Law," which says that the velocity of any 00:07:26.51\00:07:30.88 simple chemical reaction increases 2 to 3 times 00:07:30.91\00:07:35.82 for each rise in 10 degrees Celsius within a limited range. 00:07:35.85\00:07:40.99 Basically what this says is, when things get warmer 00:07:41.02\00:07:46.53 in the body, the internal functions of the body 00:07:46.56\00:07:51.40 happen quickly. 00:07:51.43\00:07:53.00 Why would we need this? 00:07:53.03\00:07:54.37 We are blessed with something that is called "fever." 00:07:54.40\00:07:57.97 Fever - what it does is it raises the body temperature 00:07:58.01\00:08:02.81 in order for the internal reactions of the body 00:08:02.84\00:08:05.91 to happen better. 00:08:05.95\00:08:07.42 So you're fighting a cold, for example, there are viruses 00:08:07.45\00:08:12.42 all over your body, so the body in order to make the 00:08:12.45\00:08:17.39 killing of this virus more efficiently - what it does is 00:08:17.43\00:08:21.83 it raises the energy and in that way you're immune system 00:08:21.86\00:08:26.47 happens to run faster; cells happen to consume 00:08:26.50\00:08:30.67 the energy faster and you actually see this in the 00:08:30.71\00:08:34.58 respiration - that's why you breathe a little bit 00:08:34.61\00:08:37.51 more when you have fever. 00:08:37.55\00:08:39.68 And it was very interesting, I was in the immunology class 00:08:39.71\00:08:42.78 when I was in medical school, the topic of the day was 00:08:42.82\00:08:46.55 "fever," and the professor was explaining with great 00:08:46.59\00:08:50.76 detail why fever, you know, increases metabolism, 00:08:50.79\00:08:55.36 increases the ability of the immune system to kill germs. 00:08:55.40\00:08:59.03 Some germs actually don't like to be so hot, 00:08:59.07\00:09:01.77 so you end up actually damaging some of the germs 00:09:01.80\00:09:04.61 when the temperature does up. 00:09:04.64\00:09:07.18 So then I raised my hand and said, "Professor, I have a 00:09:07.21\00:09:10.25 question, so how can we remove the fever when somebody 00:09:10.28\00:09:14.62 has fever?" A good question that was! 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.35 He kind of stumbled a little bit - didn't expect it. 00:09:17.39\00:09:19.85 And basically what he said was, "Well, it's tradition that 00:09:19.89\00:09:25.13 we do that." Ohh. 00:09:25.16\00:09:27.80 And the thing of it is, is that you have to use common sense. 00:09:27.83\00:09:32.00 But when you have a fever, you need to learn to 00:09:32.03\00:09:35.10 work with the fevers. 00:09:35.14\00:09:36.50 It's a good idea to be measuring the temperature, 00:09:36.54\00:09:38.84 make sure it doesn't go too high - then we can get in 00:09:38.87\00:09:41.94 trouble and if you saw even Van't Hoff's Law, 00:09:41.98\00:09:44.55 it says there - "... within a limited range." 00:09:44.58\00:09:47.42 In other words, this is not infinitum - it has a 00:09:47.45\00:09:50.45 certain limit. 00:09:50.49\00:09:51.95 So you're saying that the fever - when we get sick 00:09:52.35\00:09:55.86 and our temperature goes up, it's the body's own way 00:09:55.89\00:09:59.43 of helping you to deal with what's going on in the body. 00:09:59.46\00:10:02.13 That's right! It's helping you aid with the problem. 00:10:02.16\00:10:05.47 If you cut down the fever, the disease is going to 00:10:05.50\00:10:09.94 extend farther okay, so be careful with that. 00:10:09.97\00:10:13.98 Also be careful with children that have had seizures 00:10:14.01\00:10:18.35 and so forth - you don't want those children to be 00:10:18.38\00:10:21.98 experiencing fever and so forth, 00:10:22.02\00:10:23.89 those are going to be very, very delicate illnesses. Sure. 00:10:23.92\00:10:27.42 But anyhow, let's continue with the topic - there is 00:10:27.46\00:10:30.33 something important about hydrotherapy and that is 00:10:30.36\00:10:34.66 management of temperature. 00:10:34.70\00:10:37.23 In fact, ideally, when you do hydrotherapy you actually 00:10:37.27\00:10:40.37 should have a thermometer that will be a good investment. 00:10:40.40\00:10:43.44 Thermometers are not that expensive, it's just a matter 00:10:43.47\00:10:45.61 of just having one handy so you could have 00:10:45.64\00:10:48.44 good control of the temperature. 00:10:48.48\00:10:51.51 And we actually have a little chart we want to share with you, 00:10:51.55\00:10:55.75 and here you can see the different temperatures. 00:10:55.78\00:11:00.16 In hydrotherapy, we don't use very hot temperature above 40. 00:11:00.19\00:11:06.06 Then we have hot - this one is the one we usually use 00:11:06.09\00:11:08.96 38 to 40; warm 33 to 38; neutral which is the 00:11:09.00\00:11:13.57 temperature of your skin 34.5 to 36; 00:11:13.60\00:11:17.54 tepid 27 to 33; cool 21 to 27, and then cold 13 to 21, 00:11:17.57\00:11:25.01 and very cold 0 to 13. 00:11:25.05\00:11:28.45 Now they're all Celsius. 00:11:28.98\00:11:30.32 That's right, they're all Celsius those ones, you know, 00:11:30.35\00:11:32.35 so we're talking to Australians so they can understand 00:11:32.39\00:11:36.49 very well what we are saying. Um hm. 00:11:36.52\00:11:38.73 Now, my point is that very hot temperatures - we don't 00:11:38.76\00:11:43.20 use in hydrotherapy. 00:11:43.23\00:11:44.57 They are excellent if you have a chicken and you 00:11:44.60\00:11:46.57 want to remove the feathers, they work wonderfully for that, 00:11:46.60\00:11:49.54 but for hydrotherapy, you do not use that. 00:11:49.57\00:11:52.57 Also, I want you to use common sense - a child you cannot 00:11:52.61\00:11:57.48 give too much range of temperature. 00:11:57.51\00:12:00.12 Somebody very ill - you cannot 00:12:00.15\00:12:01.88 give too much of a temperature change. 00:12:01.92\00:12:03.85 So not too not and not too cold. That's right! 00:12:03.89\00:12:05.65 You just bring that margin in a bit closer. 00:12:05.69\00:12:08.22 Closer to the neutral. Yes. 00:12:08.26\00:12:09.59 Somebody very elderly, you don't do that. 00:12:09.62\00:12:13.56 So have common sense, you know, when you are 00:12:13.60\00:12:17.50 applying these principles that you may not cause trouble. 00:12:17.53\00:12:21.80 Hydrotherapy is not righteousness by works. 00:12:21.84\00:12:25.44 It doesn't mean that you have to be burned 00:12:25.47\00:12:27.08 in order to get the benefit. 00:12:27.11\00:12:28.54 So it needs to feel good, in fact, somebody applying 00:12:28.58\00:12:32.95 hydrotherapy needs to be a good communicator. 00:12:32.98\00:12:35.85 As you are talking to the person that the treatment 00:12:35.88\00:12:38.92 is being applied, the person is to be giving you feedback; 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.36 "Yes, it's too hot," "No, it's not hot enough," 00:12:42.39\00:12:45.26 and so forth. 00:12:45.29\00:12:46.63 Then let's go quickly through the effects of heat 00:12:46.66\00:12:49.86 and the effects of cold. 00:12:49.90\00:12:52.30 That's the reason why we do that change. 00:12:52.33\00:12:54.57 If you notice, blood flow will increase with the heat 00:12:54.60\00:12:57.67 and so does inflammatory response. 00:12:57.71\00:13:00.31 Spasm, actually both of them will decrease spasm. 00:13:00.34\00:13:04.55 Hemorrhage, heat will increase that and edema also. 00:13:04.58\00:13:08.95 And the last thing that is important - heat will bring 00:13:08.98\00:13:13.25 blood to the surface, cold will send the blood from the skin 00:13:13.29\00:13:18.49 down to the internal organs." 00:13:18.53\00:13:19.89 That's why in hydrotherapy, as a general rule, 00:13:19.93\00:13:22.86 you always finish the hydrotherapy treatment 00:13:22.90\00:13:26.70 with cold - even when you're taking your hot shower 00:13:26.74\00:13:30.21 in the morning, it is a great idea if you can actually 00:13:30.24\00:13:35.41 finish that treatment with cold water. 00:13:35.44\00:13:39.25 To send the blood back where it belongs. That's right! 00:13:39.28\00:13:41.52 You send the blood back where it belongs. 00:13:41.55\00:13:44.65 So let's talk a little bit about the prototype of the treatments 00:13:44.69\00:13:49.92 which is called "the hot foot bath." 00:13:49.96\00:13:52.76 You can see on the screen - that depends 00:13:52.79\00:13:55.66 on what we want to accomplish. 00:13:55.70\00:13:57.47 If we want to use it as a stimulant, let's say in the day 00:13:57.50\00:14:01.44 you want to start your day in a good way you can do a 00:14:01.47\00:14:04.27 hot foot bath from 3 to 5 minutes hot followed by 00:14:04.31\00:14:08.94 cold within 30 seconds to 1 minute. 00:14:08.98\00:14:12.85 Then sedative - at the end of the day you have a headache, 00:14:12.88\00:14:15.25 you want to relax, so for 6 to 10 minutes and the heat 00:14:15.28\00:14:20.02 should be mild heat - not very, very hot but just nice 00:14:20.06\00:14:24.23 and comfortable so that the person can enjoy it much better. 00:14:24.26\00:14:29.33 And also, what would you use this for? 00:14:29.36\00:14:34.00 Well there are many applications about it. 00:14:34.04\00:14:37.41 For example, we have the fact that the organs are connected 00:14:37.44\00:14:43.14 to the rest of the body. 00:14:43.18\00:14:44.51 So for example, your feet are connected to your pelvic 00:14:44.55\00:14:48.62 organs, your lungs, your sinuses and your brain - meaning 00:14:48.65\00:14:53.86 the things that are related to that can be benefited by that. 00:14:53.89\00:14:58.56 For example, you've been working the whole day, you have a 00:14:58.59\00:15:00.96 congestion headache from so much thinking, 00:15:01.00\00:15:03.00 you have this headache. 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.57 A hot foot bath would be a fabulous therapy to apply. 00:15:04.60\00:15:09.37 So let us ask our volunteers to show us how you do 00:15:09.40\00:15:15.41 one of these hot foot baths and we will see that on the screen. 00:15:15.44\00:15:20.95 So we have the therapist measuring the temperature 00:15:20.98\00:15:24.22 of the water - remember we said that we need to make sure 00:15:24.25\00:15:27.19 the temperature is correct; then the patient sitz down 00:15:27.22\00:15:32.79 and needs to feel comfortable. 00:15:32.83\00:15:34.33 It's a nice idea to cover him up so that we can 00:15:34.36\00:15:38.10 warm the body more efficiently. 00:15:38.13\00:15:41.84 And it's nice to have a little towel so that if sweat 00:15:41.87\00:15:46.57 is coming down, we can actually capture it. 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.81 When you have the right temperature, you can also 00:15:48.84\00:15:52.55 test the water with your elbow and then you can 00:15:52.58\00:15:55.68 put the feet in the water. 00:15:55.72\00:15:57.89 You talk to the patient - how is the temperature? 00:15:57.92\00:16:01.32 Be sure that you are communicating well. 00:16:01.36\00:16:03.93 You cover him up well so that the treatment can 00:16:03.96\00:16:08.40 conduct that heat correctly. 00:16:08.43\00:16:11.53 It's a good idea to put a cold cloth on the head 00:16:11.57\00:16:15.27 so the head doesn't get too hot but the rest 00:16:15.30\00:16:18.27 of the body does get warm. 00:16:18.31\00:16:20.48 And you wait, remember how long you want to apply the 00:16:20.51\00:16:24.78 application - 5 minutes, 10 minutes depending on the 00:16:24.81\00:16:29.02 purpose. 00:16:29.05\00:16:30.39 And then it's a good idea to do contrast - we said that 00:16:30.42\00:16:36.76 cold brings cold water there. 00:16:36.79\00:16:39.23 If you need to put higher temperature on the water, 00:16:39.26\00:16:43.20 you always lift the feet as she just did, add the hot water, 00:16:43.23\00:16:48.30 then you put the feet there. 00:16:48.34\00:16:49.94 The water does tend to cool over time too. That's right! 00:16:49.97\00:16:52.71 It cools down so it's a good idea to do that. 00:16:52.74\00:16:56.95 Then once you have been satisfied with the time, 00:16:56.98\00:17:03.02 then, as we said, you always finish with some cold water 00:17:03.05\00:17:07.76 and that's what she is doing. 00:17:07.79\00:17:09.46 If it's for relaxation purposes, the water is not going to be 00:17:09.49\00:17:11.76 that bad, that cold or you can actually put your 00:17:11.79\00:17:15.10 feet in a basin that has actually cold water - ice cold 00:17:15.13\00:17:21.20 water, you know, but that would be like more type of 00:17:21.24\00:17:23.97 stimulating - like to start the day and so forth. 00:17:24.01\00:17:29.38 And after treatment, make sure the patient has enough 00:17:29.41\00:17:33.72 covering and make sure there are no drafts in the room. 00:17:33.75\00:17:37.52 And it is a good idea to rest 15- 30 minutes as the person 00:17:37.55\00:17:44.49 is receiving this therapy. 00:17:44.53\00:17:46.59 As you can see, it is actually quite simple and effective. 00:17:46.63\00:17:51.07 Very doable, very doable. 00:17:51.10\00:17:53.10 I've done those and they're very, very potent 00:17:53.13\00:17:56.44 for a congested headache and it's amazing that probably 00:17:56.47\00:18:00.24 in 20 minutes or so and, you know, the blood just seemed 00:18:00.28\00:18:03.91 to be relieved from the head and it's wonderful. 00:18:03.95\00:18:06.92 Also for menstrual pain, fabulous 00:18:06.95\00:18:09.92 treatment for that, okay. 00:18:09.95\00:18:11.59 We said the feet are connected to the pelvic organs, 00:18:11.62\00:18:15.59 this is not reflexology, this is called "reflex effect." 00:18:15.62\00:18:21.86 And let's go briefly through some of these reflex effects. 00:18:21.90\00:18:27.04 So for example, in your feet as we said, we have 00:18:27.07\00:18:30.91 a connection between brain, nasal area, 00:18:30.94\00:18:35.88 lungs and pelvic organs. 00:18:35.91\00:18:37.91 This is something we can actually measure in a 00:18:37.95\00:18:40.15 physiology laboratory - this is no hocus pocus type of thing, 00:18:40.18\00:18:43.99 there is science behind this. 00:18:44.02\00:18:45.75 That's the reason why when you walk barefooted, 00:18:45.79\00:18:48.52 when the floor is cold, you're actually going to get 00:18:48.56\00:18:52.26 a little stuffy nose and so forth. 00:18:52.29\00:18:54.76 I have a friend who, if her feet get cold, she starts sneezing. 00:18:54.80\00:18:58.87 That's right because of that reflex effect. 00:18:58.90\00:19:02.14 Also, the area around your face, that is also related to the 00:19:02.17\00:19:09.58 brain area and so is the back of the neck and when you 00:19:09.61\00:19:13.98 apply hot or cold, you are doing an effect 00:19:14.02\00:19:16.99 towards the head also. 00:19:17.02\00:19:18.69 So also, if you have a congestion headache, 00:19:18.72\00:19:20.69 that could have that effect. Oh okay. 00:19:20.72\00:19:23.46 Also when you have the areas of the upper body such as 00:19:23.49\00:19:30.67 the right lower or upper abdomen, that one is related to 00:19:30.70\00:19:36.64 the liver and if you go to the other area which is 00:19:36.67\00:19:40.81 on the left of the upper abdomen, that area is 00:19:40.84\00:19:44.05 related to the spleen. 00:19:44.08\00:19:46.58 Also the lower back is related to the kidneys, 00:19:46.61\00:19:54.12 so I'm hoping you're taking notes, you know, because 00:19:54.16\00:19:58.43 this is going to be quite a lot of information. 00:19:58.46\00:20:00.36 The central part of your abdomen - that one 00:20:00.40\00:20:03.47 is related to the kidneys and ureters. 00:20:03.50\00:20:06.53 So if you want to do an application of heat and cold, 00:20:06.57\00:20:09.04 you would apply that. 00:20:09.07\00:20:10.77 Then also the area that is called the perineal area which 00:20:10.81\00:20:16.08 is the area between your anus and your genital organs, 00:20:16.11\00:20:21.35 that area is related to the prostate in the case of 00:20:21.38\00:20:26.59 the males and is related to the female organs 00:20:26.62\00:20:31.39 in the case of the females. 00:20:31.43\00:20:33.19 So you can do what is called, "sitz baths" the same way 00:20:33.23\00:20:36.97 that we apply that hot foot bath - that just to the pelvic 00:20:37.00\00:20:41.24 areas and in that way - you can get some benefit from that. 00:20:41.27\00:20:44.71 Also, if you have nervous problems, for example - a 00:20:44.74\00:20:49.31 diabetic has issues with the nerves in their feet - 00:20:49.34\00:20:52.91 beware of that. 00:20:52.95\00:20:54.72 In fact, it is contraindicated to do treatments 00:20:54.75\00:20:58.75 on a diabetic's feet as they don't feel the heat 00:20:58.79\00:21:02.96 and you can actually burn him 00:21:02.99\00:21:04.89 and then it ends up being worse than that. 00:21:04.93\00:21:07.43 So then that demonstration we just saw of the hot foot bath, 00:21:08.16\00:21:11.87 you're saying that wouldn't be a good thing to do 00:21:11.90\00:21:14.37 on someone with diabetes. That's right! 00:21:14.40\00:21:16.17 That would be contraindicated. 00:21:16.20\00:21:17.57 Or with someone who had poor circulation or what else? 00:21:17.61\00:21:21.04 Any other? That's right, people that have 00:21:21.08\00:21:24.28 very bad varices, (varicose veins), that would also 00:21:24.31\00:21:28.82 be one of the contraindications. 00:21:28.85\00:21:31.42 Also we have the skin over the breasts - those are related to 00:21:31.45\00:21:35.52 the pelvic organs and so does the skin above the abdomen, 00:21:35.56\00:21:40.70 that one is related, in general, to the whole intestines. 00:21:40.73\00:21:45.60 And finally, the area around the heart - that one also has 00:21:45.63\00:21:51.07 an effect towards the heart, so as you can see - 00:21:51.11\00:21:53.07 Oh well that's good, that's not hard to remember. 00:21:54.01\00:21:56.28 I can remember the heart relates to the heart - yes. 00:21:56.31\00:21:58.11 There are many areas in the body, 00:21:58.15\00:22:00.22 so how are we going to get there? 00:22:00.25\00:22:02.25 Well we can use a modality called, " the fomentation," 00:22:02.28\00:22:07.36 and the fomentation is an effective way of applying 00:22:07.39\00:22:10.93 moist heat - not only for the internal organs as we were 00:22:10.96\00:22:15.86 talking about the different areas of the body, 00:22:15.90\00:22:18.13 but also whenever you get an injury. 00:22:18.17\00:22:20.57 For example, you get a sprain in the hand or so, 00:22:20.60\00:22:25.84 what we want first we want to apply what is called "the RICE," 00:22:25.87\00:22:30.51 and RICE is the word for "REST Ice, Compression, Elevation" 00:22:30.55\00:22:37.19 for the first 2 to 3 days. 00:22:37.22\00:22:41.32 While the body is trying to control things up, 00:22:41.36\00:22:44.69 the best thing you can do is to apply ice. 00:22:44.73\00:22:47.16 If you apply heat, the blood vessels that are broken 00:22:47.20\00:22:51.43 you will create a big hematoma and so forth. 00:22:51.47\00:22:54.64 Yeah bruising, so don't use heat when you've 00:22:54.67\00:22:57.97 just had that kind of injury to prevent 00:22:58.01\00:22:59.91 any bleeding or any kind of bruising.
