Welcome to "Healthy Living!" 00:00:14.91\00:00:16.38 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:16.41\00:00:18.61 I once asked a group why it's important to know sources 00:00:18.65\00:00:22.62 of omega-3 other than fish. 00:00:22.65\00:00:25.09 One gentleman responded, "I might not catch any fish," 00:00:25.12\00:00:29.22 and another said, "I don't like fish." 00:00:29.26\00:00:31.73 The answer I was actually looking for was - there aren't 00:00:31.76\00:00:35.03 enough fish to supply omega-3 for 7 billion people. 00:00:35.06\00:00:38.97 Today, we're going to discuss the downside 00:00:39.00\00:00:42.14 of sourcing omega-3 from fish. 00:00:42.17\00:00:45.57 Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, our bodies can't make it. 00:01:21.81\00:01:27.12 My guest today is Dr. Eddie Ramirez. 00:01:27.15\00:01:29.75 Welcome Eddie. Thank you! 00:01:29.78\00:01:31.59 First of all, why do we need omega-3? 00:01:31.62\00:01:35.12 As the name says, this is an essential oil. 00:01:35.16\00:01:40.80 In other words, you need to have it in your diet 00:01:40.83\00:01:44.37 for the body functions to work properly. 00:01:44.40\00:01:47.27 Your brain depends on it, and many of your 00:01:47.30\00:01:49.74 cells depend on it. 00:01:49.77\00:01:51.27 There are some substances that omega-3 helps to remove, 00:01:51.31\00:01:55.78 and there are many studies that show the benefits of omega-3 00:01:55.81\00:02:00.95 such as helping avoid atherosclerosis such as help 00:02:00.98\00:02:06.52 decrease arrhythmias; such as reduce the stickiness of 00:02:06.55\00:02:14.13 your platelets that could end up giving you a serious problem 00:02:14.16\00:02:18.97 such as stroke or a heart attack and also there are many 00:02:19.00\00:02:23.41 autoimmune diseases that respond very well with omega-3. 00:02:23.44\00:02:29.14 That's a bunch of very good reasons to make sure 00:02:29.18\00:02:32.61 that we have a good source of it and a good supply of it, 00:02:32.65\00:02:36.08 your brain, your heart and autoimmune, 00:02:36.12\00:02:40.69 it doesn't leave much, does it? 00:02:40.72\00:02:42.06 And it's interesting how we have been conditioned 00:02:42.09\00:02:45.09 to think in a certain way. 00:02:45.13\00:02:47.63 Whenever somebody hears the word, "omega-3, what 00:02:47.66\00:02:53.00 do they automatically think? 00:02:53.03\00:02:54.70 Always fish - ask any group and get a chorus of fish. 00:02:54.74\00:02:59.07 And it seems to be the only thing that people really know. 00:02:59.11\00:03:02.24 That's right! And we don't realize that there are many 00:03:02.28\00:03:06.65 other healthy sources - we will see those in a minute, 00:03:06.68\00:03:10.79 of these omega-3 that is accessible, that is 00:03:10.82\00:03:16.29 cost-effective and that it has those beneficial effects 00:03:16.32\00:03:21.20 to your health. 00:03:21.23\00:03:22.56 And you know, I've been involved in lots of research 00:03:22.60\00:03:26.00 projects - just last year I submitted for publication 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.04 31 studies. Thirty one! 00:03:29.07\00:03:30.84 Thirty one! Thirty one in one year! 00:03:30.87\00:03:32.74 Including one on fish! Okay. 00:03:32.77\00:03:36.24 And it was a very well-designed study - we're talking about 00:03:36.28\00:03:39.71 5,600 people in this study, so it's a nice big sample. 00:03:39.75\00:03:47.92 There were people from all over the world including many 00:03:47.96\00:03:51.69 from New Zealand and Australia. 00:03:51.73\00:03:54.36 Oh okay, even Australia is in your study! That's right! 00:03:54.40\00:03:57.93 And we were also taking into account different religions, 00:03:57.97\00:04:05.17 different ages - the studies were nice and diverse. 00:04:05.21\00:04:09.38 The way people were cooking their fish was varied. 00:04:09.41\00:04:13.01 Some of them like it raw, some of them like it cooked, 00:04:13.05\00:04:15.88 and so forth. 00:04:15.92\00:04:17.65 And we can see that study on the screen. 00:04:17.69\00:04:20.62 This study was presented in a very important meeting 00:04:20.66\00:04:25.59 of pharmacological-related things. 00:04:25.63\00:04:29.16 And the reason why they were interested is because 00:04:29.20\00:04:31.33 this was related to toxins. 00:04:31.37\00:04:33.84 And we found in this study how eating fish had a very 00:04:33.87\00:04:41.04 negative effect on mental health which is interesting. 00:04:41.08\00:04:45.65 Well that's interesting because it's meant - the omega-3 00:04:45.68\00:04:48.22 in fish is you take it so that you can 00:04:48.25\00:04:50.72 improve your brain health. That's right! 00:04:50.75\00:04:52.59 But we actually found the opposite with our data. 00:04:52.62\00:04:56.96 I did not manipulate my data or anything - this is what 00:04:56.99\00:05:02.50 our raw data is showing. 00:05:02.53\00:05:05.30 You could predict actually the level 00:05:05.33\00:05:08.30 of depression but by their intake. 00:05:08.34\00:05:11.27 And see, this is the point, in the past, fish was an 00:05:11.34\00:05:16.44 excellent food, in fact, even Jesus ate fish if you go 00:05:16.51\00:05:21.58 and look in the Bible. 00:05:21.62\00:05:23.99 It was actually not any fish, there were certain rules - 00:05:24.02\00:05:27.46 what type of fish that He was eating which was the fish 00:05:27.49\00:05:31.16 with scales and fins, you know, they have to have 00:05:31.19\00:05:35.93 both at the same time. 00:05:35.96\00:05:37.33 So the problem of today's society is that we have 00:05:37.37\00:05:44.41 polluted our oceans, our rivers. 00:05:44.44\00:05:48.44 There was an expert on pollution that we were talking with 00:05:48.48\00:05:54.92 a few years ago and he was telling us that in the past 00:05:54.95\00:05:59.12 you could actually find mercury-free fish in the rural 00:05:59.15\00:06:05.69 waters of Canada and in the oceans near Alaska, 00:06:05.73\00:06:11.17 but he told us - you know now, today, even that fish 00:06:11.20\00:06:16.87 has been polluted with the mercury. 00:06:16.91\00:06:21.21 And we still actually don't understand the exact 00:06:21.24\00:06:25.08 mechanism on how that is happening. 00:06:25.11\00:06:27.38 We are theorizing that it may be related to rains and so forth. 00:06:27.42\00:06:32.52 As our world environment is getting so loaded with 00:06:32.55\00:06:37.89 toxins, even some of them are going via the rain and so forth. 00:06:37.93\00:06:44.53 And what happened is that these toxins start to accumulate, 00:06:44.57\00:06:51.17 and see - with mercury this is something serious. Oh yes. 00:06:51.21\00:06:55.58 Because things get accumulated and especially in your nervous 00:06:55.61\00:07:01.58 system and mercury is something extremely toxic. 00:07:01.62\00:07:06.35 So we theorize that the mechanism why we are seeing 00:07:06.39\00:07:11.49 more depression among those fish-eaters has to do with the 00:07:11.53\00:07:16.60 fact that you may be eating small amounts of that mercury 00:07:16.63\00:07:20.67 but as you continue doing that, that mercury accumulates 00:07:20.70\00:07:24.81 in your system and ends up affecting your mental health. 00:07:24.84\00:07:29.14 In fact, there's plenty of research that shows 00:07:29.18\00:07:32.58 that when you get fish, any fish, every fish has mercury 00:07:32.61\00:07:41.26 to a certain level. 00:07:41.29\00:07:42.62 I'm coauthoring a book called, "Rethink Food," together with 00:07:42.66\00:07:47.06 Michael Greger - if you want to find some good information 00:07:47.10\00:07:50.90 detailed about journals where this information comes from, 00:07:50.93\00:07:54.54 I would invite you to search "fish and Michael Greger," 00:07:54.57\00:07:58.34 and you will find some good sources there to inform you 00:07:58.37\00:08:02.28 of real causes of the problem. 00:08:02.31\00:08:04.85 You do medical practice, you do research, 00:08:04.88\00:08:07.32 you write books and you're doing even more than that! 00:08:07.35\00:08:10.45 I just don't know how you ever fit it all in, but we are very 00:08:10.49\00:08:13.62 privileged to actually have you talking to us about this, 00:08:13.66\00:08:16.36 and I'm very pleased that we can actually understand 00:08:16.39\00:08:19.09 because fish is actually promoted because of omega-3, 00:08:19.13\00:08:23.77 but it always does come with a warning: 00:08:23.80\00:08:25.40 "No more than twice a week," and that's a concern in itself, 00:08:25.43\00:08:28.34 and it should be a bit of a red light 00:08:28.37\00:08:30.01 to people, shouldn't it? That's right! 00:08:30.04\00:08:31.81 And pregnant women should not have it. 00:08:31.84\00:08:33.58 That's why there are some international guidelines 00:08:33.61\00:08:36.08 that show that - that pregnant women, children, small children. 00:08:36.11\00:08:40.72 So if it affects them, it will also 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.62 affect you. It would have to, yes. 00:08:43.65\00:08:46.45 And there is something in ecology that is called, 00:08:46.52\00:08:51.49 "biomagnification." 00:08:51.53\00:08:54.20 Biomagnification is how we describe the phenomena of 00:08:54.23\00:08:59.87 how toxins increase as they move up on the food chain. Right. 00:08:59.90\00:09:07.58 Not actually too far from where I live in northern California, 00:09:07.61\00:09:12.08 they had a study in which they documented this biomagnification 00:09:12.11\00:09:18.29 and we're going to see that study on the screen. 00:09:18.32\00:09:21.86 In this study, they were studying a toxin called "DDD." 00:09:21.89\00:09:30.30 It's something very similar to DDT. 00:09:30.33\00:09:32.63 If you notice, in the lake water, there was only 00:09:32.67\00:09:35.20 .02 parts per million. Okay. 00:09:35.24\00:09:38.91 It is so small, that amount, that any international 00:09:38.94\00:09:44.21 body will tell you, "That's acceptable, you can 00:09:44.25\00:09:46.55 drink that water." 00:09:46.58\00:09:47.92 But the microscopic vegetables that live in the plant 00:09:47.95\00:09:52.12 that are called "phytoplankton," those have 5 parts per million. 00:09:52.15\00:09:56.06 This is quite a bit jump actually, isn't it? 00:09:56.09\00:09:58.16 That's right! From.02 to 5, still that 5 is 00:09:58.19\00:10:04.27 parts per million, so still is very small 00:10:04.30\00:10:08.34 within acceptable range. 00:10:08.37\00:10:10.84 But the worrisome part was those vegetarian fish that 00:10:10.87\00:10:16.78 ate those microscopic vegetables - those had between 00:10:16.81\00:10:20.55 40 and 300 and then you jump to the carnivorous fish 00:10:20.58\00:10:26.76 which are the ones eating those vegetarian fishes 00:10:26.79\00:10:30.39 which have up to 2,500 parts per million. 00:10:30.43\00:10:36.77 Tremendous levels of this DDD. 00:10:36.80\00:10:41.20 Now I just need you to use your imagination and imagine 00:10:41.24\00:10:45.27 now the humans that eat those carnivorous fish 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.84 that are going to have even higher levels. 00:10:48.88\00:10:52.08 That's why this is something serious because - 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.72 Have they ever done a test to see how many 00:10:54.75\00:10:57.75 parts per million humans have? 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.62 Not on the DDD. Not on that, interesting! 00:10:59.65\00:11:02.96 That would be very interesting to know, but this is 00:11:02.99\00:11:05.99 something serious because these toxins have serious effects - 00:11:06.03\00:11:11.43 such as affecting the growth of a baby. 00:11:11.47\00:11:15.50 If you expose a baby to many of these toxins, 00:11:15.54\00:11:19.34 you could actually end up with something serious such as 00:11:19.37\00:11:22.81 malformation in the baby. 00:11:22.84\00:11:25.58 So that's why I would encourage every pregnant woman 00:11:25.61\00:11:29.58 especially to stay as far as possible away from fish 00:11:29.62\00:11:33.89 as you can because those toxins are there and as you get 00:11:33.92\00:11:40.23 exposed to that, many times this accumulates in your body 00:11:40.26\00:11:43.97 and can have some negative consequences. 00:11:44.00\00:11:46.90 So each time you take it in, take in any mercury 00:11:46.94\00:11:51.14 in any form, does it ever leave your body 00:11:51.17\00:11:53.94 or does it just keep accumulating? 00:11:53.98\00:11:55.61 You need special interventions 00:11:55.64\00:11:58.88 to help them get out of the body. 00:11:58.91\00:12:01.05 So, no, it just keeps on accumulating. 00:12:01.08\00:12:03.62 The body does release a little bit of it, but most of it 00:12:03.65\00:12:07.06 can continue to accumulate in your body. 00:12:07.09\00:12:10.76 Now omega-3 has been so well researched that we know 00:12:10.79\00:12:18.90 very well that it helps for many things. 00:12:18.93\00:12:21.04 There is no question about that, but one of the issues 00:12:21.07\00:12:26.34 that has come out is the reality of the situation, 00:12:26.37\00:12:30.25 that omega-3 oil is very contaminated 00:12:30.28\00:12:35.15 with all these toxins. 00:12:35.18\00:12:37.39 See, it's not just the mercury, there are PCBs that we will 00:12:37.42\00:12:41.92 mention that briefly in a minute and many other 00:12:41.96\00:12:45.06 toxins that get accumulated when you concentrate 00:12:45.09\00:12:49.03 the fish oil. 00:12:49.06\00:12:50.40 So the average fish oil that you buy in the market 00:12:50.43\00:12:54.54 is loaded with these toxins. 00:12:54.57\00:12:57.51 So it's not just mercury we're talking about, but by the time 00:12:58.07\00:13:00.91 you eat it, it's fish oil, it's worse. 00:13:00.94\00:13:03.58 It is worse because it's concentrated, so things that 00:13:03.61\00:13:07.32 may be in some moderate levels in the fish, now they are 00:13:07.35\00:13:12.19 concentrated in the fish oil. 00:13:12.22\00:13:14.76 So you cannot patent omega-3 per se because it's just 00:13:14.79\00:13:21.20 a nutrient, you know. 00:13:21.23\00:13:22.66 So a pharmaceutical company got the bright idea, they said, 00:13:22.70\00:13:27.07 "Why don't we try to separate the toxins from the fish oil 00:13:27.10\00:13:35.78 and then we can patent it, and then we can sell it for 00:13:35.81\00:13:39.68 lowering cholesterol or many other medical conditions." 00:13:39.71\00:13:43.59 So they went ahead and did that and that actually 00:13:43.62\00:13:48.32 patented version of omega-3 oil is actually available 00:13:48.36\00:13:51.46 here also in Australia, it's available around the world. 00:13:51.49\00:13:54.70 But see, when the pharmaceutical representative came to us 00:13:54.73\00:13:57.97 to talk about it, we asked him, "Okay you're saying that you're 00:13:58.00\00:14:03.00 removing toxins, how much toxins are you actually removing?" 00:14:03.04\00:14:06.51 And it was one of those questions that the 00:14:06.54\00:14:08.84 pharmaceutical agent couldn't answer to us and they said, 00:14:08.88\00:14:12.15 "Well, you know, I actually don't know this answer, 00:14:12.18\00:14:15.98 why don't you write directly to the company 00:14:16.02\00:14:19.72 and they'll give you the answers." 00:14:19.75\00:14:21.42 So we went ahead and did a letter and wrote them, 00:14:21.46\00:14:23.79 and they actually answered us, and you know what they said? 00:14:23.83\00:14:26.53 They said, "You know, it is actually impossible to remove 00:14:26.56\00:14:31.90 all the toxins from the omega-3 oil, there are 00:14:31.93\00:14:36.60 still some toxins present but it is less than the average 00:14:36.64\00:14:41.24 fish oil." 00:14:41.28\00:14:42.61 So as you can see, this is a reality and we're not 00:14:42.64\00:14:48.22 making these stories just to make you afraid. 00:14:48.25\00:14:50.85 We're just showing you the facts. 00:14:50.89\00:14:52.45 We need to know, I mean we really do need to 00:14:52.49\00:14:54.62 have that information. 00:14:54.66\00:14:55.99 And if people still want to eat it or drink it, 00:14:56.02\00:14:59.09 they can do it but at least we should know. 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.70 It wouldn't be honest for me, having this 00:15:01.73\00:15:05.73 knowledge and not tell you. 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.34 See I travel very much, just recently I was in Iceland 00:15:07.37\00:15:12.31 enjoying the beautiful hot springs there, 00:15:12.34\00:15:15.51 they're fantastic - if you ever have a chance, go there! 00:15:15.54\00:15:17.88 They are absolutely fabulous; 00:15:17.91\00:15:19.91 those hot springs there in Iceland. 00:15:19.95\00:15:21.38 And near Iceland, there was a fascinating 00:15:21.42\00:15:26.32 research that was done. 00:15:26.35\00:15:28.06 There are some islands that are north of the U.K. 00:15:28.09\00:15:32.56 that are called "The Faroe Islands," and scientists there 00:15:32.59\00:15:37.80 started to realize that the IQ of the children living in those 00:15:37.83\00:15:43.71 islands was starting to decrease and they were very puzzled, 00:15:43.74\00:15:47.84 you know, why are these children's IQ decreasing. 00:15:47.88\00:15:51.15 The Faroe Islands today is a prosperous country 00:15:51.18\00:15:54.38 just like Australia, you know, they try to keep their 00:15:54.42\00:15:58.35 oceans clean and so forth. 00:15:58.39\00:16:01.22 It's not like a developing country that you go and you 00:16:01.26\00:16:04.16 see all the pollutants that have been thrown into the ocean, 00:16:04.19\00:16:08.36 and so forth - they are careful to maintain their oceans clean 00:16:08.40\00:16:11.60 and so forth. 00:16:11.63\00:16:12.97 So scientists started to test the food that these people 00:16:13.00\00:16:18.27 were eating because they thought maybe this is related 00:16:18.31\00:16:21.08 to something they are eating. 00:16:21.11\00:16:22.94 And sure enough, they realized that their intake 00:16:22.98\00:16:27.32 especially of mercury but other toxins were very high 00:16:27.35\00:16:32.42 due to their high consumption of food products. 00:16:32.45\00:16:37.63 Fish products. Fish products, that's right. 00:16:37.66\00:16:40.66 So fish and also they eat whale there - one of the few 00:16:40.70\00:16:45.50 places where they kill whales. 00:16:45.53\00:16:47.04 They have not signed that agreement that 00:16:47.07\00:16:48.57 they should not kill whales. 00:16:48.60\00:16:49.94 But anyhow, they started to have that link 00:16:49.97\00:16:54.58 and realized that the problem lies in that. 00:16:54.61\00:16:58.71 As they were eating these sea products, that was affecting 00:16:58.75\00:17:03.32 their children. 00:17:03.35\00:17:04.92 There is a very good documentary 00:17:04.95\00:17:06.45 if you are interested in this. 00:17:06.49\00:17:07.92 So their IQ was actually noticeably down to the point 00:17:07.96\00:17:10.36 where they thought, "We have to work out what this is." 00:17:10.39\00:17:13.16 It was enough to really get attention. 00:17:13.96\00:17:15.66 This was a public health crisis. 00:17:15.70\00:17:18.80 Do have sort of a figure on that? 00:17:18.83\00:17:20.90 So what I recommend to you is to view the documentary, 00:17:20.94\00:17:26.71 10 to 15 points down than the normal, it was down. 00:17:26.74\00:17:31.51 So you can watch the documentary if you Goggle the words 00:17:31.55\00:17:36.72 "Frontline" which is nonprofit government organization in 00:17:36.75\00:17:41.42 America and "Faroe Islands and mercury," Google those 3 words, 00:17:41.46\00:17:45.59 "Frontline, Faroe Islands and mercury," 00:17:45.63\00:17:48.63 you will see the details of the study. 00:17:48.66\00:17:50.97 And Faroe Island is spelled F A R O E? That's right. 00:17:51.00\00:17:54.74 Faroe, yes. 00:17:54.77\00:17:56.10 That's the way that you'd spell it. 00:17:56.14\00:17:57.47 So this is a big problem - why expose your children 00:17:57.51\00:18:04.61 to these types of problems? 00:18:04.65\00:18:06.82 And also, what you were mentioning in the beginning, 00:18:06.85\00:18:09.42 is a very valid point. 00:18:09.45\00:18:11.82 See, we are depleting our fish stocks around the world. 00:18:11.85\00:18:19.03 As the methods of fishing have improved, we are creating 00:18:19.06\00:18:24.60 an ecological disaster. 00:18:24.63\00:18:27.50 See when you go to places like Africa and you see the people 00:18:27.54\00:18:32.24 there with a little boat and a little net catching fish, 00:18:32.27\00:18:37.61 those people are never going to cause a global crisis. Right. 00:18:37.65\00:18:40.98 But when you have this industrial-sized boat in which 00:18:41.02\00:18:45.79 they throw these huge nets and pick up absolutely everything 00:18:45.82\00:18:50.63 that is in their midst, this starts to have a huge 00:18:50.66\00:18:55.36 negative effect in the reserves of fish in the world. 00:18:55.40\00:19:02.27 In fact, there was a big crisis some years ago in Canada 00:19:02.30\00:19:07.48 in which they over-fished and people had to change 00:19:07.51\00:19:12.58 the location where they were living - there was just 00:19:12.61\00:19:14.75 not enough fish to keep up and be able to provide 00:19:14.78\00:19:20.39 for the fishermen and so forth. 00:19:20.42\00:19:22.99 And also, today in many places, they are raising fish 00:19:23.02\00:19:28.86 in an artificial fashion in which they have them in 00:19:28.90\00:19:33.03 one enclosed area and the fish starts to grow and they 00:19:33.07\00:19:38.31 feed them and so forth. 00:19:38.34\00:19:39.67 Well studies show that that is actually worse for the 00:19:39.71\00:19:42.94 environment than the fish that are running around wild. 00:19:42.98\00:19:46.25 How does that work? The reason why is because 00:19:46.28\00:19:48.38 in order to feed those fish, you need to fish other fish! Oh. 00:19:48.42\00:19:54.02 So not because you're eating farmed salmon and these 00:19:54.06\00:19:57.59 type of foods, you are making a huge impact at the level 00:19:57.63\00:20:02.60 of the ecology when you choose to use that. 00:20:02.63\00:20:05.70 Plus, because those animals are living so close together, 00:20:05.73\00:20:10.01 their risk of disease increases, so they have to throw 00:20:10.04\00:20:14.21 antibiotics and different things and you are being 00:20:14.24\00:20:17.98 exposed to these things. 00:20:18.01\00:20:19.71 There's a fabulous documentary, if you want to see the details - 00:20:19.75\00:20:25.05 That's incredible, we know they feed antibiotics to land animals 00:20:25.09\00:20:27.99 but feeding them to fish is like, oh what else? 00:20:28.02\00:20:31.89 So the name of the documentary is called, "End of the Line." 00:20:31.93\00:20:36.13 I would highly encourage you if you are interested in this topic 00:20:36.16\00:20:39.77 showing the details of this over-fishing around the world, 00:20:39.80\00:20:44.61 and the kind of global crisis that we're facing. 00:20:44.64\00:20:47.78 And "Time Magazine" puts it among the lists - the group of 00:20:47.81\00:20:52.31 creatures that is the most endangered of being extinguished 00:20:53.98\00:20:58.39 are fish in general - that's the number one. 00:20:58.42\00:21:01.56 And when you are doing these choices in your food, 00:21:01.59\00:21:04.69 to a certain level, you actually have some responsibility 00:21:04.73\00:21:08.83 with this crisis. 00:21:08.86\00:21:10.47 Well I think you have fairly well convinced us that 00:21:10.50\00:21:12.93 fish is really something to be very concerned about. 00:21:12.97\00:21:16.10 Omega-3 is something to be very concerned about too, 00:21:16.14\00:21:18.77 we must have it and we must have it in our diet 00:21:18.81\00:21:21.14 because our bodies don't make it. 00:21:21.18\00:21:22.74 So what are we going to do? 00:21:22.78\00:21:24.25 Where will we find a good source of omega-3? 00:21:24.28\00:21:26.45 So we have good sources of omega-3 in the vegetable source, 00:21:26.48\00:21:31.69 so let's see the graphic that we have on the screen 00:21:31.72\00:21:35.02 about the sources of plant-based omega-3. 00:21:35.06\00:21:40.40 If you notice, flaxseed or linseed - that's where you 00:21:40.43\00:21:45.27 actually get the name "omega-3" has tremendous levels 00:21:45.30\00:21:48.97 of omega-3, so does chia, walnuts, wheat germ, 00:21:49.00\00:21:54.41 and even spinach and almonds have certain levels of omega-3. 00:21:54.44\00:22:00.78 That's quite a spread really, isn't it? 00:22:00.82\00:22:02.32 It's not just one or two things, although some are obviously 00:22:02.35\00:22:05.59 richer sources, but the greens while they are not a 00:22:05.62\00:22:10.73 high source, were meant to be having lots of them. 00:22:10.76\00:22:13.86 That's right and green soybeans also - when it's mature, 00:22:13.90\00:22:17.27 it doesn't have it but when it's green, you have that omega-3. 00:22:17.30\00:22:21.34 So what I encourage my patients is that you need to 00:22:21.37\00:22:25.17 make sure, especially if you're on a plant-based diet, 00:22:25.21\00:22:28.28 you need to make sure that you are supplying enough 00:22:28.31\00:22:34.45 omega-3 in your diet. 00:22:34.48\00:22:35.98 So purposely, you need to add 00:22:36.02\00:22:38.35 these foods in your daily intake. 00:22:38.39\00:22:41.22 So make sure that you are eating that flaxseed. 00:22:41.26\00:22:44.79 You need to grind it - you are not a cow so that 00:22:44.83\00:22:47.46 you can just eat it whole, it won't give you any benefit. 00:22:47.50\00:22:51.40 You need to grind it and you can add it on your cereal 00:22:51.43\00:22:55.90 in the morning; to your food that you're cooking; 00:22:55.94\00:22:59.47 to your salads and as you notice, many nuts are also 00:22:59.51\00:23:04.61 very rich in these omega-3s. 00:23:04.65\00:23:07.68 So the nuts again were the walnuts and I think did you say 00:23:07.72\00:23:12.19 almonds had some? Yes, almonds have some, 00:23:12.22\00:23:13.96 not so much but the almonds tend to be more of a 00:23:13.99\00:23:17.09 rich type of food. 00:23:17.13\00:23:18.76 And the chia and so that's lovely - you can do 00:23:18.79\00:23:21.66 some lovely things with chia, and desserts with that. 00:23:21.70\00:23:24.17 And don't just eat just one, try to use rotation. Yes! 00:23:24.20\00:23:29.90 And the second food, chia - actually there's a state in 00:23:29.94\00:23:33.41 Mexico named after chia. 00:23:33.44\00:23:35.58 It's called, "Chiapas." Okay. 00:23:35.61\00:23:38.51 That's how important that state is. 00:23:38.55\00:23:42.62 And then we have another graphic that clearly shows 00:23:42.65\00:23:49.06 another disadvantage that you 00:23:49.09\00:23:52.23 have when you are eating fish oil. 00:23:52.26\00:23:57.97 The next graphic - what we are seeing in the vertical axis 00:23:58.00\00:24:02.40 is cholesterol and we're comparing the different levels 00:24:02.44\00:24:06.78 of cholesterol among fish oil made out of different fish 00:24:06.81\00:24:11.71 and how much cholesterol we would eat if we were to 00:24:11.75\00:24:16.18 partake of 100 grams of beef. 00:24:16.22\00:24:20.36 So you can see that eating a T- bone steak will actually 00:24:20.39\00:24:25.63 give you about 79 milligrams of cholesterol. 00:24:25.66\00:24:30.63 Now compare that to herring oil - much more higher. 00:24:30.67\00:24:34.57 Salmon oil, sardine oil, cod liver oil. 00:24:34.60\00:24:38.01 Eddie, we're just talking about 3 teaspoons of the oils, 00:24:38.04\00:24:41.94 not a large quantity like the steak. 00:24:41.98\00:24:44.71 Just that is 15 grams, it's only 3 teaspoons - 00:24:44.75\00:24:47.28 So very concentrated! - and it's got more cholesterol 00:24:47.32\00:24:49.48 than a T-bone steak - that's huge! 00:24:49.52\00:24:52.55 So yes, these are the implications of partaking 00:24:52.62\00:24:57.13 of this fish oil. 00:24:57.16\00:24:59.63 So especially people that have heart issues and so forth, 00:24:59.66\00:25:04.37 this wouldn't be the best advice for them to eat these 00:25:04.40\00:25:09.04 types of foods in order to provide that omega-3. 00:25:09.07\00:25:13.21 That's an understatement, not the best advice - I mean 00:25:13.24\00:25:15.71 it's really a big concern, really a big concern. 00:25:15.74\00:25:18.45 And, you know, there was a fabulous study that 00:25:18.48\00:25:21.32 showed that some pesticides are actually found in the 00:25:21.35\00:25:27.82 tissues of breast cancer patients. 00:25:27.86\00:25:31.93 And, you know, breast cancer is not a rare cancer 00:25:31.96\00:25:34.60 in Australia - it's a big killer and unfortunately something 00:25:34.63\00:25:39.63 very common. 00:25:39.67\00:25:41.00 So we still actually don't understand the mechanics 00:25:41.04\00:25:43.34 and so forth but we theorize that the exposure of toxins 00:25:43.37\00:25:48.51 via fish consumption may play an important role in 00:25:48.54\00:25:53.82 that increase of breast cancer. 00:25:53.85\00:25:57.09 That's really such an awful thing to hear - I mean, 00:25:57.12\00:26:00.66 it is, it's a tragic thing when people get that. 00:26:00.69\00:26:04.46 And also, not only that, there is also cancer-related 00:26:04.49\00:26:10.00 to the fish - see, we've been studying this for the last 00:26:10.03\00:26:15.27 50 years, there was a published paper that came out 00:26:15.30\00:26:18.27 and they compared in the waters of Michigan the change in the 00:26:18.31\00:26:24.08 health of fish in a 50-year range. 00:26:24.11\00:26:28.28 And what they found, they were studying a particular fish 00:26:28.32\00:26:30.92 there called "the bullhead," it's a very common fish there. 00:26:30.95\00:26:34.06 They found that compared to 50 years ago, now 30% 00:26:34.09\00:26:41.60 of the bullhead that they capture in that lake of Michigan 00:26:41.63\00:26:48.27 actually has liver cancer. Oh. 00:26:48.30\00:26:51.57 And we theorize that this could possibly come due to the 00:26:51.61\00:26:57.25 exposure of those toxins that are in his flesh - they end up 00:26:57.28\00:27:03.59 affecting the health and the fish also end up developing 00:27:03.62\00:27:08.09 this type of problem. 00:27:08.12\00:27:09.92 You've listed a lot of things there - a lot of concerns 00:27:09.96\00:27:13.80 about sourcing omega-3 from fish oil or just eating fish, 00:27:13.83\00:27:17.13 let's just summarize those. 00:27:17.17\00:27:18.57 First of all, it's high in mercury. That's right! 00:27:18.60\00:27:21.77 What else did you say? And we also have 00:27:21.80\00:27:24.41 exposure to DDD; you also have exposure to toxins 00:27:24.44\00:27:31.58 that affect the development of a baby or a pregnant woman. 00:27:31.61\00:27:36.32 It also can affect negatively the IQ of children. 00:27:36.35\00:27:41.32 It is a product high in cholesterol. 00:27:41.36\00:27:44.53 It is a product, the fish oil especially that is very high 00:27:44.56\00:27:48.13 in toxins and we know from studies that PCBs that come 00:27:48.16\00:27:53.10 specifically from fish decrease and damage the sperm in males. 00:27:53.13\00:27:58.57 All of those big concerns - good reasons to look at the plant 00:27:58.61\00:28:02.04 sources that the good Lord placed in a good number of 00:28:02.08\00:28:04.95 things in nature and I think that's a really good way to go. 00:28:04.98\00:28:09.68 Look, some of the things in today's presentation 00:28:09.72\00:28:12.49 might have surprised you but we trust that they'll 00:28:12.52\00:28:15.22 benefit you. 00:28:15.26\00:28:16.59 And if you'd like to watch our programs on-demand, 00:28:16.62\00:28:19.19 just go to our website that's at 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:19.23\00:28:24.37 click on the watch button and we look forward to 00:28:24.40\00:28:27.07 seeing you next time. 00:28:27.10\00:28:28.44 Thank you for joining us! 00:28:28.47\00:28:30.01
