Welcome to "Healthy Living!" 00:00:14.78\00:00:16.58 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:16.61\00:00:18.65 There's a lot of controversy about soy, 00:00:18.68\00:00:21.55 is it good or bad for me? 00:00:21.58\00:00:23.45 And for that matter, is milk good or bad for me? 00:00:23.49\00:00:26.96 Stay tuned as we explore some of the current 00:00:26.99\00:00:29.52 research on these two foods. 00:00:29.56\00:00:31.76 When it comes to deciding whether a product is healthy 00:01:08.06\00:01:11.07 or not, vested interests aren't the best source of information. 00:01:11.10\00:01:15.50 So what does the research have to say about milk and soy? 00:01:15.54\00:01:19.24 Dr. Eddie Ramirez has studied the scientific research 00:01:19.27\00:01:22.61 and he's here today to share it with us. 00:01:22.64\00:01:24.75 Welcome Eddie! 00:01:24.78\00:01:26.11 Thank you very much for having me here. A pleasure! 00:01:26.15\00:01:29.05 What can you tell us about this controversy that goes 00:01:29.08\00:01:31.82 on about soy and then again, what about milk? 00:01:31.85\00:01:34.82 Yes, we're going to talk a lot about these two topics. 00:01:34.86\00:01:38.93 You will be receiving lots of information. 00:01:38.96\00:01:41.43 Get a pen and paper so you can take notes. 00:01:41.46\00:01:44.17 And when we're talking about milk, please understand 00:01:44.20\00:01:49.20 we are not talking about human breast milk. 00:01:49.24\00:01:52.67 That is something I encourage every single one of my 00:01:52.71\00:01:56.88 patients to breastfeed as much as possible. 00:01:56.91\00:02:01.35 It has huge implications in the health of the baby. 00:02:01.38\00:02:05.55 The risk of pneumonia, for example, decreases dramatically. 00:02:05.59\00:02:09.69 The risk of the famous crib death decreases dramatically 00:02:09.72\00:02:18.37 when a baby is breastfed. 00:02:18.40\00:02:21.60 The IQ of the baby is higher when they receive breast milk, 00:02:21.64\00:02:27.14 and there are studies that are tracing that kids that were 00:02:27.18\00:02:31.85 bottle-fed - they have higher risk of heart disease, diabetes, 00:02:31.88\00:02:36.65 Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis and the list 00:02:36.69\00:02:39.92 just goes on and on and on when you put things in 00:02:39.95\00:02:43.86 perspective, it's definitely worth it. 00:02:43.89\00:02:46.03 When I was living in Norway, I lived there for many years, 00:02:46.06\00:02:49.73 my first daughter was born there - they actually encourage 00:02:49.76\00:02:53.94 mothers to take one year off their job so they could 00:02:53.97\00:02:59.87 really focus on their baby because they saw the 00:02:59.91\00:03:03.38 implications that this would have 00:03:03.41\00:03:05.31 in the long-term of that baby. 00:03:05.35\00:03:08.38 So we are not going to be talking about breast milk, 00:03:08.42\00:03:10.92 you should do breast milk and so forth. 00:03:10.95\00:03:13.09 We're talking today about milk usually that comes from 00:03:13.12\00:03:19.26 cows - that's the one we're going to be talking about. 00:03:19.29\00:03:21.96 Alright, well that's good to clear that one up 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.90 and I'm glad you said that about breast milk because 00:03:23.93\00:03:25.90 it's just so important. Yes! 00:03:25.93\00:03:27.90 And you know, today there are many companies that 00:03:27.94\00:03:33.84 what they care about is money, 00:03:33.88\00:03:35.78 and not necessarily may be their well-being. 00:03:35.81\00:03:38.81 And we have created a science of creating the ideal cow, 00:03:38.85\00:03:45.52 and we can see that on the screen. 00:03:45.55\00:03:49.69 It's going to be weighing between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds 00:03:49.72\00:03:55.10 in American terms - we want this cow to grow as much as 00:03:55.13\00:04:00.74 possible. 00:04:00.77\00:04:02.10 And you know, in this industry, there are many things that 00:04:02.14\00:04:06.81 don't go right. 00:04:06.84\00:04:08.54 Just in America, almost a 100 million cows are 00:04:08.58\00:04:12.91 there and today, we are understanding the implications 00:04:12.95\00:04:17.59 of that including the beef cows, the milk cows and the calves. 00:04:17.62\00:04:23.16 And it is actually a little bit cruel the way this works; 00:04:23.19\00:04:29.50 cow's milk is designed for baby cows and those baby cows 00:04:29.53\00:04:35.00 are taken away from their mother. 00:04:35.04\00:04:37.51 You know how you love your baby and so forth? 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.08 Cows love their babies also and there is actually 00:04:40.11\00:04:44.65 some emotional disturbances and so forth, when they are 00:04:44.68\00:04:49.85 being taken away. 00:04:49.88\00:04:51.59 And see, the reason why there are issues with this 00:04:51.62\00:04:56.39 is because, as I mentioned and I'll repeat, cows' milk 00:04:56.42\00:05:01.00 is a fabulous food for the baby cow! 00:05:01.03\00:05:05.30 But the humans are not designed for this excess. 00:05:05.33\00:05:10.54 For example, when you see the protein amount on different 00:05:10.57\00:05:16.14 milks and how fast the animal doubles his weight, 00:05:16.18\00:05:21.25 you can see that correlationship. 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.35 For example, just last year I was in India. 00:05:23.39\00:05:27.49 I had the opportunity of visiting a fascinating place, 00:05:27.52\00:05:30.69 a temple where they would go there and worship rats! 00:05:30.73\00:05:35.80 And the irony is that there are people that are dying 00:05:35.83\00:05:40.24 of hunger in India, yet they are cooking and making 00:05:40.27\00:05:45.94 foods for rats! 00:05:45.97\00:05:48.21 There were thousands of thousands 00:05:48.24\00:05:50.41 of rats there in that temple. Oh. 00:05:50.45\00:05:54.35 Those rats, they need to double their weight in only 4.5 days. 00:05:54.38\00:06:02.49 So that's why rats' milk has 11.8 grams of protein, 00:06:02.52\00:06:11.97 so a very, very high amount. 00:06:12.00\00:06:14.57 You compare that with, for example, goats' milk 00:06:14.60\00:06:17.14 and that's 4.1 grams compared to the fact that it will 00:06:17.17\00:06:22.41 double its weight in 19 days, cows have 3.3 because 00:06:22.44\00:06:28.08 they'll double the weight in 47 days. 00:06:28.12\00:06:30.82 And please notice, human beings they will double their weight 00:06:30.85\00:06:35.26 in 180 days and that's why human milk has 1.2. 00:06:35.29\00:06:41.93 So compare the 1.2 to the 3.3 00:06:41.96\00:06:45.63 of cows. And this is the protein. 00:06:45.67\00:06:47.70 That's the protein content, and not only that, 00:06:47.74\00:06:50.21 all the other different indicators when you compare 00:06:50.24\00:06:54.48 how much it has milk, how much 00:06:54.51\00:06:56.91 human milk has, it's a big difference. 00:06:56.95\00:06:59.88 For example, calcium, you know; calcium - we're talking about 00:06:59.91\00:07:04.09 in the range of 40 grams compared to cows 198. 00:07:04.12\00:07:08.46 It is too much! 00:07:08.49\00:07:10.79 That's about 5 times as much calcium in cows' milk, 00:07:10.83\00:07:15.46 so not really designed for a human baby or human at all. 00:07:15.50\00:07:18.37 The same thing with phosphorus. That's right! 00:07:18.43\00:07:22.64 Phosphorus, 18 on human, 152 on the cows. 00:07:22.67\00:07:26.84 See, that is a lot and actually when you are eating 00:07:26.88\00:07:32.35 foods that are high in phosphorus, 00:07:32.38\00:07:36.55 the effect that that has on the human is that it 00:07:36.58\00:07:40.66 encourages throwing out the calcium 00:07:40.69\00:07:44.39 which is not a good idea. 00:07:44.43\00:07:45.79 You know, especially ladies, you want 00:07:45.83\00:07:48.16 to have your strong bones. 00:07:48.20\00:07:51.00 So it's like drinking soda pop. 00:07:51.03\00:07:54.77 See, soda pop is high in phosphorus and that creates 00:07:54.80\00:08:00.48 the leaking of the calcium. 00:08:00.51\00:08:02.34 The same thing with sodium. 00:08:02.38\00:08:03.71 Human milk 23, cows 80. Too much, it's too much! 00:08:03.75\00:08:09.82 Potassium also an excess. 00:08:09.85\00:08:12.92 So I don't like to encourage people to do this because I 00:08:12.95\00:08:18.69 know the negative implications that these have in their body. 00:08:18.73\00:08:22.90 Yes, so we tend to make cow's milk the benchmark 00:08:22.93\00:08:26.33 for nutrition for humans and you've just outlined 00:08:26.37\00:08:29.90 in every respect, it's just not 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.11 and it doesn't fit what we need at all. 00:08:32.14\00:08:34.48 In fact, right now I am involved in a big research 00:08:34.51\00:08:38.71 project in India - back when the English came to England, 00:08:38.75\00:08:44.72 they had the term "white schools," in which they were 00:08:44.75\00:08:50.96 encouraged drinking milk to the children. 00:08:50.99\00:08:55.33 But they did not realize there that a lot of the Indian 00:08:55.36\00:09:00.67 population actually has intolerance to the milk, 00:09:00.70\00:09:05.77 and right now that's exactly a research 00:09:05.81\00:09:08.11 project that we are doing. 00:09:08.14\00:09:10.15 Indian people are not just one group of people, 00:09:10.18\00:09:14.35 but there are hundreds of different ethnic groups 00:09:14.38\00:09:18.55 there that live in India. 00:09:18.59\00:09:20.56 So we are trying to analyze and understand which groups 00:09:20.59\00:09:26.76 tend to handle better - which groups tend to hand worse, 00:09:26.80\00:09:29.36 but some of those groups, 70% of them, don't handle 00:09:29.40\00:09:33.10 milk well. 00:09:33.13\00:09:34.47 So they have a lactose intolerance. 00:09:34.50\00:09:36.37 The English came and encouraged the drinking of milk 00:09:36.40\00:09:40.18 and many health problems related to this. 00:09:40.21\00:09:43.35 And you know, when we're talking about dairy, 00:09:43.38\00:09:45.21 I want you to understand that we're talking about 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.68 nonfat milk, buttermilk, cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, 00:09:47.72\00:09:55.09 ice cream, kefir, butter, whey, all these things fall 00:09:55.12\00:10:01.36 under that umbrella of what we are talking about today. 00:10:01.40\00:10:06.53 And you know, the same situation happened in Mexico, 00:10:06.57\00:10:09.50 in Latin America - there came some terrorists across the ocean 00:10:09.54\00:10:14.24 on some boats and from Spain to the Americas and they brought 00:10:14.28\00:10:20.82 foods that were not there. 00:10:20.85\00:10:22.85 See, in the continent of America there were no cows; 00:10:22.88\00:10:28.66 there were no horses; there were no chickens; 00:10:28.69\00:10:31.86 there were no pigs there, and they brought these things. 00:10:31.89\00:10:35.60 And the people living there were not exposed 00:10:35.63\00:10:40.50 to milk products for thousands of years. 00:10:40.54\00:10:43.84 And as these products arrived, this is something modern, 00:10:43.87\00:10:48.84 and especially the people that have more native blood 00:10:48.88\00:10:53.88 tend to have more problems with these products 00:10:53.92\00:10:57.15 because their system has not been exposed to them. 00:10:57.19\00:11:01.12 So we find a huge amount of milk intolerance, 00:11:01.16\00:11:04.73 yet is the staple of many people to use them. 00:11:04.76\00:11:08.80 That's right, and we're not even designed for it 00:11:08.83\00:11:11.50 or it wasn't even designed for humans - it was designed 00:11:11.53\00:11:14.20 for baby cows, so it's not surprising. 00:11:14.24\00:11:16.10 I guess we've built up a bit of a tolerance in the developed 00:11:16.14\00:11:20.08 countries but some have, some haven't. 00:11:20.11\00:11:22.74 But really, it's not even good for people 00:11:22.78\00:11:26.08 who can tolerate it. 00:11:26.11\00:11:27.45 That's right because it's not only the protein per se, 00:11:27.48\00:11:31.95 but also the other nutrients that are in excess 00:11:31.99\00:11:35.46 such as cholesterol and so forth. 00:11:35.49\00:11:39.26 And we're talking about a business that is in the 00:11:39.29\00:11:44.17 billions of dollars. Yes. 00:11:44.20\00:11:46.53 So you know, when there's this type of commercial interest, 00:11:46.57\00:11:50.44 many times what they want is to sell their product 00:11:50.47\00:11:54.58 and they may modify things and so forth. 00:11:54.61\00:11:58.28 And it's interesting you know, I travel to many countries, 00:11:58.31\00:12:01.58 many, many countries - pretty much to all the continents 00:12:01.62\00:12:04.39 on this planet, and I can tell you; for example, in India 00:12:04.42\00:12:09.32 and in Africa especially, African-origin people 00:12:09.36\00:12:15.10 have a BIG intolerance to milk products. 00:12:15.13\00:12:18.27 I went there to communities where there is no milk, 00:12:18.30\00:12:21.54 yet, when you analyze those people's bones, 00:12:21.57\00:12:25.47 their bones are strong, the children grow adequately; 00:12:25.51\00:12:29.78 they are able to do well in school and so forth. 00:12:29.81\00:12:34.65 And don't say, "Well doctor, don't you know 00:12:34.68\00:12:36.35 people are dying of hunger?" 00:12:36.38\00:12:37.72 No, they're not dying of hunger, I saw with my own eyes. 00:12:37.75\00:12:40.86 Yes, there are families, you know, where there's alcoholism 00:12:40.89\00:12:43.66 and these types of issues and they may suffer 00:12:43.69\00:12:45.93 but the average person there is eating enough 00:12:45.96\00:12:49.30 and what they eat is a whole foods, plant-based diet. 00:12:49.33\00:12:54.94 That seems to be a recurring theme. 00:12:54.97\00:12:56.77 Now this is a very interesting point and I think 00:12:56.81\00:12:59.11 it's probably the most important thing that people 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.58 consider because we hear a lot about calcium and the need for 00:13:01.61\00:13:04.91 more calcium and so on, and of course, cow's milk 00:13:04.95\00:13:08.38 is the highest source of calcium in the diet, 00:13:08.42\00:13:11.75 so how do you explain that people who are not using any, 00:13:11.79\00:13:17.33 has got strong bones? That's right! 00:13:17.36\00:13:19.66 And how people who use a lot, do not - how does that work? 00:13:19.69\00:13:24.20 In fact, there is a fascinating relationship. 00:13:24.23\00:13:26.70 We can see in a published study, on the screen 00:13:26.74\00:13:30.84 the comparison between those countries 00:13:30.87\00:13:34.78 that drink the most calcium, yet they have the highest 00:13:34.81\00:13:41.42 rates of hip fracture which is an indicator of osteoporosis. 00:13:41.45\00:13:46.22 If you want to picture Australia is somewhere between 00:13:46.25\00:13:49.72 The United Kingdom and New Zealand, that's where 00:13:49.76\00:13:53.09 we find Australia which is very high! 00:13:53.13\00:13:59.77 How come they're eating humongous amounts 00:13:59.80\00:14:03.20 of calcium - yet they have such high rates of osteoporosis? 00:14:03.24\00:14:09.61 You've asked the question, now I want you to answer it. 00:14:09.64\00:14:11.58 Let me share with you how this works. 00:14:11.61\00:14:14.42 Yes because usually that calcium 00:14:14.45\00:14:19.05 comes from dairy-related products. 00:14:19.09\00:14:23.59 So you're taking the calcium, yes, but you're also taking 00:14:23.63\00:14:28.93 huge amounts of animal protein which, unfortunately, 00:14:28.96\00:14:34.34 tends to be an acid-forming protein. 00:14:34.37\00:14:40.01 So that excess amount of protein published research over 00:14:40.04\00:14:45.31 and over has shown that when you take that high amount of 00:14:45.35\00:14:48.98 protein together with the calcium, instead of 00:14:49.02\00:14:51.82 putting that calcium in your bones, you actually 00:14:51.85\00:14:55.12 have the negative effect and you actually take away 00:14:55.16\00:14:59.16 some of the calcium from your bones and throw it away. 00:14:59.19\00:15:03.00 In fact, you can measure this in the laboratory. 00:15:03.03\00:15:06.00 You give more animal products and I'll show you that in 00:15:06.03\00:15:09.87 your urine the calcium is being dropped out. 00:15:09.90\00:15:13.71 Not only that, it's a problem because the kidneys 00:15:13.74\00:15:17.51 - the calcium needs to pass through the kidneys 00:15:17.55\00:15:20.02 and you can form kidney stones. 00:15:20.05\00:15:22.28 I was just reading recently from a residency book of 00:15:22.32\00:15:26.05 nephrology, you know the specialist on the kidneys, 00:15:26.09\00:15:28.82 literally it says there in that book - "People that are 00:15:28.86\00:15:33.86 recurrent calcium stone formers should consider becoming 00:15:33.90\00:15:42.64 vegetarians - that's what it says there. 00:15:42.67\00:15:44.74 The specialist book on nephrology! 00:15:44.77\00:15:48.34 Because we know that relationship and not only 00:15:48.38\00:15:51.95 milk will do this, also meat, chicken and animal products 00:15:51.98\00:15:58.45 they are very acidic and that will have that 00:15:58.49\00:16:02.56 negative effect on your bones. 00:16:02.59\00:16:04.73 So if you want to have strong bones, the best things 00:16:04.76\00:16:07.76 you can do is to remove yourself as far away from milk. 00:16:07.80\00:16:12.33 Now, the problem is that the marketing industry 00:16:12.37\00:16:16.30 has done a fabulous job at brainwashing us. Yes. 00:16:16.34\00:16:20.94 And when you ask somebody, "Where does calcium come from?" 00:16:20.98\00:16:24.98 You're going to say, "Milk." 00:16:25.01\00:16:26.35 You're just programmed to say that because of marketing. 00:16:26.38\00:16:30.35 You think about - oh raising a child without milk, 00:16:30.39\00:16:34.19 oh, that's child abuse, you may say! Yes. 00:16:34.22\00:16:36.99 But you know, when you think about it, 00:16:37.03\00:16:38.39 where does the cow get its calcium? 00:16:38.43\00:16:40.10 That's right! Green leafies! 00:16:40.13\00:16:42.33 Exactly! See, calcium is in the ground, so I don't see cows 00:16:42.36\00:16:49.74 eating dirt and things; so yes, the plant absorbs 00:16:49.77\00:16:56.44 the calcium through the roots, gets in the plant 00:16:56.48\00:16:58.91 and that's when you eat it. 00:16:58.95\00:17:00.32 You can do exactly the same thing as the cow is doing, 00:17:00.35\00:17:04.35 and get that from there. 00:17:04.39\00:17:05.85 I have three daughters - 00:17:05.89\00:17:07.49 If we can put a man on the moon, we can probably 00:17:07.52\00:17:09.92 work out how to get our calcium from the same way a cow does. 00:17:09.96\00:17:13.29 I have three daughters, the three of them grew with, 00:17:13.33\00:17:17.07 of course, breast milk and after that not a single drink of milk. 00:17:17.10\00:17:22.50 They are strong, they are their normal weight, 00:17:22.54\00:17:25.61 their normal height and they do fantastically well in school. 00:17:25.64\00:17:30.25 And you know, there's research on this - if you go to 00:17:30.28\00:17:33.72 the scientific literature, there are 57 published 00:17:33.75\00:17:39.22 studies that I could identify, there may be a little bit more 00:17:39.25\00:17:41.92 if you look forward, but the ones I identified, 00:17:41.96\00:17:43.99 there were 57 and I started counting, 57% of those 00:17:44.03\00:17:48.56 57 studies showed that there is no significant benefit 00:17:48.60\00:17:54.94 of drinking dairy and your bones. Yes. 00:17:54.97\00:17:58.37 Twenty-nine percent said there's a little bit favorable 00:17:58.41\00:18:04.41 effect and if you analyze those 29 studies, 6 of them 00:18:04.45\00:18:13.82 were sponsored by the milk industry. 00:18:13.86\00:18:18.89 So you could say it has a little bit of a marketing effect 00:18:18.93\00:18:23.26 compared to 14% of those studies they show that it was 00:18:23.30\00:18:28.57 an adverse effect in your bones. 00:18:28.60\00:18:31.67 Interesting, now you're talking about the plant-based diet 00:18:31.71\00:18:34.54 being good for our bones and the animal-based foods being 00:18:34.58\00:18:38.75 the ones that deplete the calcium. 00:18:38.78\00:18:41.12 I was looking on the "World Health Organization" website 00:18:41.15\00:18:44.42 recently and the healthy diet and the fact sheet 00:18:44.45\00:18:47.89 for a healthy diet and it lists fruits, vegetables, 00:18:47.92\00:18:52.23 legumes or beans, nuts and, what was the other one? 00:18:52.26\00:18:57.80 And grains. And grains, whole 00:18:57.83\00:18:59.90 unprocessed grains. That's right. 00:18:59.93\00:19:01.30 There's no mention of milk. 00:19:01.34\00:19:03.20 There's no mention of any of the 00:19:03.24\00:19:05.01 meats or even eggs. That's right! 00:19:05.04\00:19:06.78 And a healthy diet, according to the "World Health 00:19:06.81\00:19:09.48 Organization," comprises of all those plant foods. 00:19:09.51\00:19:12.75 That's factsheet #394, if you want to check it out. 00:19:12.78\00:19:17.65 Fact sheet 394 on the "World Health Organization" website. 00:19:17.69\00:19:21.89 So it really bears out what you're saying and, of course, 00:19:21.92\00:19:25.53 the original diet that the Creator gave us 00:19:25.56\00:19:27.66 is what you've been talking about - it was all plant foods. 00:19:27.70\00:19:30.50 And you know, there is right now a big 00:19:30.53\00:19:33.44 attack on soy products. Yes. 00:19:33.47\00:19:36.60 Part of this is the milk industry running rumors 00:19:36.64\00:19:39.64 and so forth; part of it is uninformed people that call 00:19:39.67\00:19:45.25 themselves "experts" while they're not and running 00:19:45.28\00:19:48.68 all these rumors against soy that are not justified. 00:19:48.72\00:19:53.52 Let me just deal with a few of the arguments 00:19:53.56\00:19:56.12 and what is the reality of the situation. 00:19:56.16\00:19:58.43 Some people say that because of the substances found in 00:19:58.46\00:20:04.23 soy, you actually have an antinutrient effect. 00:20:04.27\00:20:08.80 In other words, you actually 00:20:08.84\00:20:10.81 lose nutrients when you are eating soy. 00:20:10.84\00:20:14.58 The reality is that when you cook and process soy products 00:20:14.61\00:20:20.58 with cooking and fermentation, these antinutrients substances 00:20:20.62\00:20:27.19 get eliminated. 00:20:27.22\00:20:28.56 Oh, well you don't eat them raw, I mean you wouldn't 00:20:28.59\00:20:31.86 eat it raw in any way, you just wouldn't. 00:20:31.89\00:20:33.80 You would never eat soy raw, exactly! 00:20:33.83\00:20:36.67 So that's why those substances theoretically that 00:20:36.70\00:20:40.40 could harm you, they're not present as you process 00:20:40.44\00:20:44.71 which is the way that we usually eat our soy. 00:20:44.74\00:20:47.51 Nobody eats raw soybeans that I'm aware of. 00:20:47.54\00:20:50.48 That's very misleading isn't it? 00:20:50.51\00:20:52.25 So be careful with that lie. 00:20:52.28\00:20:54.88 Two, some people say, "It has phytochemicals 00:20:54.92\00:20:58.85 which have an effect and could actually increase cancers 00:20:58.89\00:21:03.99 theoretically." 00:21:04.03\00:21:05.36 That is not what we found when we analyze groups that have 00:21:05.39\00:21:10.90 high levels of soy. 00:21:10.93\00:21:13.13 See, I travel to many countries in Asia and the interesting 00:21:13.17\00:21:17.31 thing is that actually in Asia, you find the most 00:21:17.34\00:21:21.58 healthy people on planet earth. 00:21:21.61\00:21:23.75 It is not the Mediterranean - in the Mediterranean you still 00:21:23.78\00:21:27.28 have a lot of heart disease, a lot of strokes, a lot of 00:21:27.32\00:21:30.05 diabetes - rates are a little bit lower than the Western 00:21:30.09\00:21:33.59 world, but they are still quite present and very common, 00:21:33.62\00:21:37.26 and number one causes of death. 00:21:37.29\00:21:39.26 Yet when you travel to rural Asia where people have been 00:21:39.29\00:21:45.50 eating high levels of soy for long periods of time, 00:21:45.53\00:21:50.61 you find very low rates of things like breast cancer 00:21:50.64\00:21:55.51 and prostate cancer and so forth, when you analyze the 00:21:55.54\00:22:00.62 epidemiology of countries like Japan and you compare them 00:22:00.65\00:22:04.75 like the U.K. or Australia and so forth. 00:22:04.79\00:22:08.02 So it actually has an anticancer effect, the consumption 00:22:08.06\00:22:13.19 of the soy products. 00:22:13.23\00:22:14.83 So that's just the very opposite of what is being alleged. 00:22:14.86\00:22:17.93 That's right! It has an anticancer effect. 00:22:17.97\00:22:20.64 Also some people say that it actually increases heart 00:22:20.67\00:22:26.34 disease - again through theoretical models, 00:22:26.37\00:22:30.45 you may think that, but that's not what we found. 00:22:30.48\00:22:34.02 When you compare heart attack rates with countries like 00:22:34.05\00:22:38.75 Thailand and Japan and so forth against Australia for example, 00:22:38.79\00:22:45.43 the rates are phenomenally different. 00:22:45.46\00:22:48.00 People have less heart disease there, yet they consume 00:22:48.03\00:22:53.03 much more soy products. Yes. 00:22:53.07\00:22:55.90 And also the sex hormones - some people I've seen in my 00:22:55.94\00:23:00.28 clinical consultation, they come and they're afraid 00:23:00.31\00:23:03.48 that they're not going to want to give soy milk 00:23:03.51\00:23:07.28 to their boys because they may become effeminate and so forth. 00:23:07.32\00:23:12.05 I can tell you that does not happen in the clinical practice 00:23:12.09\00:23:17.99 when you see and start to follow-up that. 00:23:18.03\00:23:22.03 See, the beneficial effects of soy actually are very 00:23:22.06\00:23:28.47 markedly seen in ladies that are passing through their menopause. 00:23:28.50\00:23:35.08 When they're passing through their menopause, when you 00:23:35.11\00:23:37.48 compare Australians, U. K., America against those people 00:23:37.51\00:23:43.59 in rural Asia where they have high levels of soy, 00:23:43.62\00:23:47.26 the amount of menopause-related problems such as the famous 00:23:47.29\00:23:53.03 hot flashes - are almost unknown there. 00:23:53.06\00:23:56.70 Some of them don't even have a term for that, do they? 00:23:56.73\00:23:59.80 That's right! It's just something that happens. 00:23:59.83\00:24:02.30 So that's why even some phytoestrogens may be actually 00:24:02.34\00:24:07.94 beneficial to take for those ladies going through that 00:24:07.98\00:24:12.45 process of the change of life. 00:24:12.48\00:24:15.42 And one worrisome thing about milk is that it increases 00:24:15.45\00:24:21.32 something that is called, "the insulin growth factor" 00:24:21.36\00:24:26.26 or also known as IGF-1, and high protein foods - milk, meat, 00:24:26.29\00:24:34.34 and chicken increase this. 00:24:34.37\00:24:36.64 See, this factor makes things grow fast! 00:24:36.67\00:24:40.48 So, for example, you have tumor cells - every single one of us 00:24:40.51\00:24:45.45 generates tumor cells every day, our immune system 00:24:45.48\00:24:49.48 takes care of them, but if you have onboard too much 00:24:49.52\00:24:53.56 of that IFG, you can actually encourage the growth of 00:24:53.59\00:24:59.06 those cancer cells which is negative. 00:24:59.09\00:25:03.20 Now soy in excess could have this negative effect, 00:25:03.23\00:25:09.20 just be temperate, don't drink the whole gallon of soymilk. 00:25:09.24\00:25:13.78 If you drink just a couple of cups of soymilk, 00:25:13.81\00:25:17.75 you are perfectly fine. 00:25:17.78\00:25:20.15 Excess theoretically could be problematic, so just use 00:25:20.18\00:25:24.39 temperance and use legumes as rotation, you know 00:25:24.42\00:25:27.72 not only milk but there are many other legumes 00:25:27.76\00:25:31.79 you can take advantage of that. 00:25:31.83\00:25:34.10 So that idea that you need strong bones and only milk 00:25:34.13\00:25:40.07 can give it to you, that is actually not correct. 00:25:40.10\00:25:42.74 It's not the reality, it's not what happening. 00:25:42.77\00:25:44.87 I mean, we saw that image there and as the calcium increased, 00:25:44.91\00:25:50.21 so did the hip fracture rate, so it's not just an isolated 00:25:50.25\00:25:54.58 study - this is whole populations that's being 00:25:54.62\00:25:57.15 demonstrated throughout whole populations. 00:25:57.19\00:25:59.19 But that is not valid to say that milk is going to do it. 00:25:59.92\00:26:03.32 And many people don't realize what they are drinking! 00:26:03.36\00:26:06.59 For example, the international standards including here 00:26:06.63\00:26:11.20 in Australia allow a certain number of white blood cells. 00:26:11.23\00:26:16.14 Do you know what white blood cells are? Of pus! 00:26:16.17\00:26:19.74 When you are drinking milk, 00:26:19.77\00:26:22.54 there is pus inside of that milk. 00:26:22.58\00:26:27.08 It has a certain limit that it should have (Oh that's nice!) 00:26:27.12\00:26:31.52 but it is allowed to have that. Ohh. 00:26:31.55\00:26:34.96 I've seen many kids in the clinical practice, they have 00:26:34.99\00:26:38.39 repeated infections of the ear and sinus and so forth; 00:26:38.43\00:26:44.43 we take them off dairy. 00:26:44.47\00:26:46.13 Those things disappear! 00:26:46.17\00:26:48.04 And this is published in pediatric journals, 00:26:48.07\00:26:50.74 I'm not making this up, because milk is rich also 00:26:50.77\00:26:54.68 in certain bacteria also. 00:26:54.71\00:26:57.28 So why expose yourself to these 00:26:57.31\00:27:02.15 kind of issues if you can avoid it. 00:27:02.18\00:27:06.32 And also the terminology is a little bit deceptive. 00:27:06.35\00:27:08.92 "Whole milk," are you aware, is 49% fat, I mean it's 00:27:08.96\00:27:13.33 tremendously high. 00:27:13.36\00:27:15.06 In fact, low fat milk still is pretty high, it's 21% fat 00:27:15.10\00:27:20.27 if you were to remove all the water that is in it. 00:27:20.30\00:27:23.57 So that is actually not the best of the ideas. 00:27:23.61\00:27:28.01 I would encourage you, go to the internet, 00:27:28.04\00:27:30.25 find substitutes and try them out. 00:27:30.28\00:27:33.01 You will enjoy them, I guarantee you. 00:27:33.05\00:27:35.15 Well thank you for that and I'm sure that some of our 00:27:35.18\00:27:39.25 listeners would have found some of 00:27:39.29\00:27:41.42 what you're saying a little bit of a big surprise. 00:27:41.46\00:27:43.66 A little bit of a big surprise, whichever way it goes. 00:27:43.69\00:27:46.36 So I hope that you will be able to take that onboard 00:27:46.39\00:27:49.96 and begin to move towards the plant sources. 00:27:50.00\00:27:53.70 So you have certainly given us some food for thought today, 00:27:53.74\00:27:57.21 and I pray that God will bless the efforts of 00:27:57.24\00:28:00.84 our viewers and our listeners. 00:28:00.88\00:28:02.44 And if you'd like to watch our programs on demand, 00:28:02.48\00:28:05.18 just go to our website that's: 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:05.21\00:28:09.58 click on the watch button and 00:28:09.62\00:28:10.95 you can see these programs again. 00:28:10.99\00:28:12.75 God bless you. 00:28:12.79\00:28:14.69
