Thank you! 00:01:29.42\00:01:30.75 Lovely to have you on the program. 00:01:30.79\00:01:32.35 This is a fascinating subject and something I'd like 00:01:32.39\00:01:35.32 to understand better than I do, 00:01:35.36\00:01:36.76 so I'm looking forward to what you have to tell us about this. 00:01:36.79\00:01:40.06 Yes, as I always tell my patients, you know, 00:01:40.10\00:01:43.50 in the top three things that you need to know is 00:01:43.53\00:01:46.10 I want you to understand "inflammation" because 00:01:46.13\00:01:49.54 as you correctly said - many of the common diseases 00:01:49.57\00:01:54.54 such as heart disease and Alzheimer's and many more, 00:01:54.58\00:01:58.58 are directly linked to inflammation. 00:01:58.61\00:02:01.85 So we need to understand what inflammation is. 00:02:01.88\00:02:05.02 Inflammation is basically a response mechanism 00:02:05.05\00:02:09.32 of the body that responds when there are 00:02:09.36\00:02:14.03 certain injuries or problems happening on the body. 00:02:14.06\00:02:18.03 For example, let me give you this illustration. 00:02:18.07\00:02:21.20 Suppose that you poke yourself with a thorn. 00:02:21.24\00:02:25.54 I've done that, I've done that quite recently so I know that. 00:02:25.57\00:02:28.84 I imagine somebody must have done that in the past. 00:02:29.84\00:02:33.95 So what the body does, it knows there is an 00:02:33.98\00:02:38.52 injury happening there, so inflammation what it does is 00:02:38.55\00:02:43.02 it calls the mechanisms of repair to come and 00:02:43.06\00:02:48.73 aid in repairing that area. 00:02:48.76\00:02:52.20 So in that way the body knows there may be some pathogens 00:02:52.23\00:02:56.87 there as the thorn crosses the protection layers of the skin, 00:02:56.91\00:03:02.11 pathogens go inside. 00:03:02.14\00:03:03.91 The body knows that it needs to send something to stop them, 00:03:03.95\00:03:06.98 so the new system goes there and there are some 00:03:07.02\00:03:11.72 classic symptoms of inflammation that even all 00:03:11.75\00:03:16.69 the way from the time of the Romans, the physicians back then 00:03:16.73\00:03:21.70 saw those four symptoms and we can see them on the screen. 00:03:21.73\00:03:25.53 You feel the area, it feels hot, it's painful, it becomes red, 00:03:25.57\00:03:32.47 it becomes swollen. 00:03:32.51\00:03:34.91 I know all of that when it comes to pricking my finger or 00:03:34.94\00:03:39.18 some other injury - I've seen that, 00:03:39.21\00:03:41.35 but what's the connection between that and say, 00:03:41.38\00:03:46.76 heart disease or brain problems, that's what I don't get. 00:03:46.79\00:03:51.39 Absolutely! A very good question. 00:03:51.43\00:03:53.70 So that mechanism of defense is saying something is not 00:03:53.73\00:03:59.43 right here, I need help. 00:03:59.47\00:04:01.24 All the mechanisms of the body go and help. 00:04:01.27\00:04:03.77 So when this is happening in an acute state, 00:04:03.81\00:04:08.31 just within a short period of time, 00:04:08.34\00:04:11.25 this is actually a big blessing. 00:04:11.28\00:04:14.18 See, if you didn't have this mechanism, you could 00:04:14.22\00:04:17.72 actually die of a thorn pricking you. Yes. 00:04:17.75\00:04:22.22 Why? Well, the bacteria would start reproducing and suddenly 00:04:22.26\00:04:26.09 you will be full of bacteria and you would literally 00:04:26.13\00:04:28.76 die of a thorn pricking you. 00:04:28.80\00:04:31.57 And that used to happen before the antibiotics came up. 00:04:31.60\00:04:35.54 Yes that used to happen before we had antibiotics and so forth, 00:04:35.57\00:04:38.44 but still the mechanisms of the body would stop a lot of it. 00:04:38.47\00:04:43.21 So what's the link between that and those 00:04:43.24\00:04:46.68 current modern diseases? 00:04:46.72\00:04:49.18 Well, a physician back in the 1800s by the name of 00:04:49.22\00:04:54.59 "Virchow," he is a German physician - he started putting 00:04:54.62\00:04:59.76 the pieces together and he realized that many people 00:04:59.79\00:05:05.17 were having chronic inflammation and when that inflammation 00:05:05.20\00:05:11.54 becomes chronic, many times those four symptoms that 00:05:11.57\00:05:16.28 we mentioned - they disappear, the person doesn't even know 00:05:16.31\00:05:20.88 that this is happening to them and suddenly different 00:05:20.92\00:05:25.45 problems start to come about. 00:05:25.49\00:05:26.86 How do we know that? Because now with our 00:05:26.89\00:05:29.52 modern understanding of biochemistry and pathology, 00:05:29.56\00:05:33.96 we can trace those problems to problems 00:05:34.00\00:05:38.20 of chronic inflammation and you know this is something I 00:05:38.23\00:05:41.27 face in the clinical practice. 00:05:41.30\00:05:42.84 So chronic is something that just goes on and on. 00:05:42.87\00:05:44.94 That's right, it's long-term, you don't resolve that 00:05:44.97\00:05:49.61 inflammation. 00:05:49.64\00:05:50.98 So, for example, I see this in the clinical practice. 00:05:51.01\00:05:54.42 A patient comes there, I go ahead and take some blood tests, 00:05:54.45\00:05:58.59 and I check and I see that there are things there that 00:05:58.62\00:06:02.52 don't look good and I tell the patient, "You know, 00:06:02.56\00:06:05.36 I would like you to do a few lifestyle changes." 00:06:05.39\00:06:07.90 Some of the patient say, "Lifestyle changes, why do I 00:06:07.93\00:06:11.40 need to change, you know I'm doing good, 00:06:11.43\00:06:13.50 I don't need any change." 00:06:13.54\00:06:14.87 They don't realize that inflammation is active inside 00:06:14.90\00:06:21.08 of them and that is extremely harmful. 00:06:21.11\00:06:25.68 And there are some interesting studies that have been done 00:06:25.71\00:06:29.18 with populations in which we can see rates of disease. 00:06:29.22\00:06:35.16 For example, there was a very interesting study done 00:06:35.19\00:06:39.26 a few years ago in which they were having different 00:06:39.29\00:06:46.47 groups of people - they had Japanese that live in Japan; 00:06:48.90\00:06:52.01 they had Japanese that moved to Hawaii, Hawaii is part of 00:06:52.04\00:06:56.95 America and they had also the Americans per se, 00:06:56.98\00:07:04.35 the Caucasian. 00:07:04.39\00:07:05.72 They were comparing these three groups. 00:07:05.75\00:07:07.29 And I want you to go and see that screen and you can see 00:07:07.32\00:07:12.49 how similar those different cancers in the 00:07:12.53\00:07:16.56 different populations are. 00:07:16.60\00:07:18.03 Please notice how the Japanese that live in Hawaii and the 00:07:18.07\00:07:21.54 Caucasians in Hawaii, you can see that the cancers 00:07:21.57\00:07:25.64 are very similar in their rate. 00:07:25.67\00:07:29.94 The only one that changes there, you can see, is the cancer 00:07:29.98\00:07:34.62 of the esophagus and the cancer of the stomach - that has to do 00:07:34.65\00:07:38.95 with their consumption of smoked products, okay? 00:07:38.99\00:07:44.63 When you eat smoked fish, smoked things are carcinogenic, 00:07:44.66\00:07:50.20 and in a minute, we'll talk a little bit more about that. 00:07:50.23\00:07:53.00 But can you see the big change that happened - from the 00:07:53.03\00:07:55.90 one that lives in Japan to the one that came to Hawaii? 00:07:55.94\00:07:59.24 The reason why this happened is because many of the 00:07:59.27\00:08:04.38 habits that they acquire in that new country were 00:08:04.41\00:08:09.42 inflammatory! 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.32 So point #1- Understand that inflammation many times 00:08:11.35\00:08:17.39 can be silent especially the chronic inflammation. 00:08:17.43\00:08:20.96 It's not like the thorn that pricks you, you quickly know 00:08:21.00\00:08:23.83 something is not right there (Oh yes), and that's why 00:08:23.87\00:08:27.57 "Time Magazine" ran a whole issue about it. 00:08:27.60\00:08:30.94 And "Time Magazine" put a fascinating title, 00:08:30.97\00:08:34.11 it calls it, "The Silent Killer," and it's 00:08:34.14\00:08:37.91 true, you know. Yes. 00:08:37.95\00:08:39.28 So it's there in the body for a long time and don't even 00:08:39.31\00:08:42.28 know that it's there? 00:08:42.32\00:08:43.65 Well it's not that it's in the body but your 00:08:43.69\00:08:47.06 habits are actually encouraging the growth of it. 00:08:47.09\00:08:53.19 I like to use the following illustration: 00:08:53.23\00:08:55.86 Think of inflammation like fire. 00:08:55.90\00:08:59.37 You know, in the winter in Australia, to have some nice 00:08:59.40\00:09:04.64 warmth - this actually is welcome because it can get 00:09:04.67\00:09:07.58 cold here in Australia. Oh yes! 00:09:07.61\00:09:10.21 So you have a fireplace, some of you have a fireplace and you 00:09:11.05\00:09:15.15 know, that's fantastic to have a fireplace, sit down in front 00:09:15.18\00:09:18.02 of it and get that nice heat. 00:09:18.05\00:09:20.66 But, what happens if the fire starts coming out of the 00:09:20.69\00:09:27.66 fireplace and those flames start invading outside of your home? 00:09:27.70\00:09:34.24 Is that good or is that bad? 00:09:34.27\00:09:35.67 I would say, not good, not good at all. 00:09:35.70\00:09:38.01 You can end up in disaster if this happened. 00:09:38.04\00:09:42.64 Or the second illustration I would like to use: 00:09:42.68\00:09:45.05 Like a stove - imagine a stove. 00:09:45.08\00:09:48.12 The nice thing about a stove compared to a fireplace 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.39 to cook, is that you have the ability to control the amount 00:09:51.42\00:09:56.02 of heat that is being generated, so you can adjust. 00:09:56.06\00:09:59.63 Yes, too much, too little - it's a fantastic invention. 00:09:59.66\00:10:03.10 But what happens if that heat that is supposed to be contained 00:10:03.13\00:10:09.04 to the stove, starts going out of control, starts heating 00:10:09.07\00:10:13.91 the food, flames start coming out of the food or the oil, 00:10:13.94\00:10:19.41 disaster comes about. 00:10:19.45\00:10:21.95 So the key with inflammation is that it can be very good 00:10:21.98\00:10:27.46 for you because you stop a pathogen - for example 00:10:27.49\00:10:30.89 the thorn example, but it can also be bad for you 00:10:30.93\00:10:35.93 if your habits are inflammatory. 00:10:35.96\00:10:40.04 Okay, so what are these sources of inflammation? 00:10:40.07\00:10:44.61 That is an excellent question! 00:10:44.64\00:10:46.51 Let me share with you a few, there are many but let me 00:10:46.54\00:10:48.54 share with you a few of those important sources. 00:10:48.58\00:10:52.21 One of them has to do with sunlight. 00:10:52.25\00:10:56.12 If you get too much sunlight, it is inflammatory. 00:10:56.15\00:11:02.02 Now let me ask you - "If you have gotten more sun 00:11:02.06\00:11:06.53 than what you should, what color does your skin become?" 00:11:06.56\00:11:11.03 Oh, it goes red. 00:11:11.07\00:11:12.40 Okay, remember the symptoms of inflammation? 00:11:12.43\00:11:14.80 Let me repeat them - You have the heat, you have the pain, 00:11:14.84\00:11:20.18 you have the growth and you have the redness. Okay. 00:11:20.21\00:11:24.71 DING! Some people are saying, "Okay, I see the connection." 00:11:24.75\00:11:29.62 So when you have too much sun, you're skin becomes red! 00:11:29.65\00:11:33.52 See, you can quickly put there the two by two together. 00:11:33.56\00:11:36.69 So people, for example, that day by day - excess sunlight, 00:11:36.73\00:11:40.96 excess sunlight - that can be harmful. 00:11:41.00\00:11:42.73 Another source of inflammation is cigarette smoking and in a 00:11:42.76\00:11:46.23 minute, we will talk more about it. 00:11:46.27\00:11:48.50 Also, alcohol! Very inflammatory! 00:11:48.54\00:11:52.61 Every time you drink alcohol, it is inflammatory. 00:11:52.64\00:11:57.81 A study just came in, just a couple of weeks ago, 00:11:57.85\00:12:02.08 demonstrating how inflammation and alcohol intake 00:12:02.12\00:12:07.12 is directly related. 00:12:07.16\00:12:09.59 If you want to go and read the paper - visit my Twitter 00:12:09.62\00:12:13.40 "Eddie RD MD" - you can see the copy of the paper. 00:12:13.43\00:12:18.77 Also another source of inflammation is animal product 00:12:18.80\00:12:22.44 intake - animal products are very inflammatory. 00:12:22.47\00:12:27.31 And another source of inflammation is 00:12:27.34\00:12:30.81 having excess weight. 00:12:30.85\00:12:33.18 If you have more weight than what you should, 00:12:33.21\00:12:36.95 that actually creates inflammation. 00:12:36.99\00:12:40.82 Now I don't want you to worry if you have a few kilos extra. 00:12:40.86\00:12:45.23 What I want you to do - I want you to get yourself on a 00:12:45.26\00:12:49.43 plan to start losing weight. 00:12:49.46\00:12:51.23 And this is the beauty of this, as soon as you start 00:12:51.27\00:12:55.00 losing weight, your inflammation in your body decreases. 00:12:55.04\00:13:01.08 Let me show you a couple of more sources - yes go ahead. 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.71 So you start to get the benefits right away? 00:13:03.75\00:13:06.48 Immediately as you start losing the weight, 00:13:06.51\00:13:09.62 the inflammation in the body decreases. 00:13:09.65\00:13:13.02 That's why somebody that has a problem with their weight 00:13:13.05\00:13:16.89 we know very well there are many different types of 00:13:16.93\00:13:20.20 cancer that that person has the risk of getting because of 00:13:20.23\00:13:25.90 that link of chronic inflammation. 00:13:25.93\00:13:28.50 Can I just tell you one thing about my 00:13:28.54\00:13:30.71 one effort to smoke? Yes. 00:13:30.74\00:13:33.54 I was a little kid, I don't really remember how old, 00:13:33.58\00:13:36.34 maybe 8 or something like that. 00:13:36.38\00:13:38.18 So my sister and I decided we would have a smoke, 00:13:38.21\00:13:42.68 but we couldn't get our hands on any so we had to improvise, 00:13:42.72\00:13:46.69 and all we could find to improvise was some paper straws. 00:13:46.72\00:13:52.36 Anyway, the fire wasn't a problem, we had a wood fire 00:13:52.39\00:13:55.63 like you were just saying. 00:13:55.66\00:13:57.00 So my older sister was very gracious and she said, 00:13:57.03\00:14:00.10 "Don't you go first?," so I went first and so I 00:14:00.14\00:14:04.37 put this thing in the fire and it caught a big flame 00:14:04.41\00:14:07.68 at the end and it started to burn down fairly quickly 00:14:07.71\00:14:10.58 and I thought, "Well I better be quick here." 00:14:10.61\00:14:12.25 So I did what I'd seen people do and I drew back heavily, 00:14:12.28\00:14:16.15 (laughter), and that flame went down the straw 00:14:16.18\00:14:19.35 and down my throat. Hmmm! 00:14:19.39\00:14:21.46 And I could hardly - Oh, it was a wonder I could speak. 00:14:21.49\00:14:24.99 And when I did, I said to Olga, "Well, it's your turn now," 00:14:25.03\00:14:28.36 and she wouldn't do it! Laughter! 00:14:28.40\00:14:31.23 So anyway, fortunately by the time I was a few years older, 00:14:31.27\00:14:36.14 I had enough sense to think, "I don't think it's a 00:14:36.17\00:14:37.97 good idea at all," so I never did actually smoke a cigarette. 00:14:38.01\00:14:41.24 I'm glad you learned the lesson early! 00:14:41.28\00:14:45.35 It stayed with me for quite a while. 00:14:45.38\00:14:48.62 Other sources of inflammation are virus and bacteria. 00:14:48.65\00:14:52.95 For example, papilloma virus - something very common today. 00:14:52.99\00:14:59.26 Unfortunately studies show that, for example, 00:14:59.29\00:15:02.66 in high schools today, here in Australia, three-quarters of the 00:15:02.70\00:15:07.10 young people have the papilloma virus... 00:15:07.14\00:15:10.07 How did they get it? Sexually transmitted virus. 00:15:10.51\00:15:14.08 And you know, these people have a huge risk for male and 00:15:14.11\00:15:19.91 female-related cancers later on in their future. 00:15:19.95\00:15:24.32 And even though there is a vaccination that is being used 00:15:24.35\00:15:27.59 nowadays, that only covers a few of the subtypes. 00:15:27.62\00:15:32.09 There are more than 100 different types of subtypes 00:15:32.13\00:15:36.06 of papilloma virus. 00:15:36.10\00:15:37.53 So your choices can interfere with this. 00:15:37.57\00:15:41.27 Also another source of inflammation could be 00:15:41.30\00:15:44.91 pollution, so be careful on exposing yourself to pollutants. 00:15:44.94\00:15:50.55 And another very important one that you have a lot of control 00:15:50.58\00:15:54.48 on it has to do with your emotional state. 00:15:54.52\00:15:58.75 If you are somebody under lots of stress, lots of anxiety, 00:15:58.79\00:16:05.26 these types of situations, that mental stress by itself 00:16:05.29\00:16:12.37 is a very important source of inflammation. 00:16:12.40\00:16:16.60 So what I would advise you is take hold 00:16:16.64\00:16:20.41 of spiritual resources. Okay. 00:16:20.44\00:16:23.11 You know, sometimes we're in problems that makes us 00:16:23.14\00:16:26.31 feel overwhelmed or that we cannot go ahead, 00:16:26.35\00:16:31.35 well, take advantage of those spiritual resources. 00:16:31.39\00:16:36.83 One of the things that has been actually proven in the 00:16:36.86\00:16:40.03 scientific literature to deal with stress 00:16:40.06\00:16:43.67 has to do with prayer! 00:16:43.70\00:16:45.63 When you pray, you're actually having an outlet for that stress 00:16:45.67\00:16:52.27 to go out from your system. Yes. 00:16:52.31\00:16:55.94 So be very diligent at trying to incorporate. 00:16:55.98\00:17:01.65 I actually read a study one time and they found that people 00:17:01.68\00:17:06.59 who prayed and meditated for 10 minutes twice a day, 00:17:06.62\00:17:10.13 significantly lowered their blood pressure. 00:17:10.16\00:17:12.39 That's right! It's just beautiful! 00:17:12.43\00:17:14.46 There's a very good connection, you know, with our mind 00:17:14.50\00:17:18.13 and our body and our soul, all of that - they are all 00:17:18.17\00:17:20.40 very interconnected. 00:17:20.44\00:17:22.14 And so what works for one, works for the other for good or 00:17:22.17\00:17:25.04 for bad unfortunately, so yes. 00:17:25.07\00:17:27.78 And I love the stuff you've been telling us in the 00:17:27.81\00:17:30.75 sources and the problems because when you stop and really 00:17:30.78\00:17:33.28 think about some of those things that you've said - that can 00:17:33.31\00:17:36.99 cause inflammation, they're all pretty much common sense, 00:17:37.02\00:17:39.62 but not that common, unfortunately, so go on. 00:17:39.65\00:17:44.69 So my goal is for you to try to find sources of inflammation 00:17:44.73\00:17:51.67 in your lifestyle; identify them and as soon as you 00:17:51.70\00:17:57.14 find them, then stop them! 00:17:57.17\00:17:59.11 There was a fascinating study that was 00:17:59.14\00:18:01.21 done a couple of years ago in which they 00:18:01.24\00:18:05.05 had two groups of people. 00:18:05.08\00:18:07.98 One group - well both groups were fasting overnight. 00:18:08.02\00:18:11.75 One group was just drinking water in the morning; 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.96 the other group ate typical things that actually are 00:18:14.99\00:18:18.86 being used commonly here in Australia. 00:18:18.89\00:18:21.56 Their breakfast consisted of white bread, cheese, 00:18:21.60\00:18:25.93 egg and fried potatoes. 00:18:25.97\00:18:30.07 That was the breakfast that they eat. 00:18:30.11\00:18:32.31 And I think they got that on their way to work at a fast 00:18:32.34\00:18:34.08 food place. Probably on the way to 00:18:34.11\00:18:36.38 work in a hurry. 00:18:36.41\00:18:37.75 Yes, that doesn't sound like a home one. 00:18:37.78\00:18:39.11 So there is, in the body, a special marker of inflammation, 00:18:39.91\00:18:45.59 It sounds complicated but it's simple. 00:18:45.62\00:18:47.32 It is called: NF-kappa beta. 00:18:47.36\00:18:51.23 Basically what this long name means - it means that this 00:18:51.26\00:18:56.67 is the main switch of inflammation - that's what 00:18:56.70\00:19:00.20 our current understanding is. 00:19:00.24\00:19:02.64 As you go to your home and it's dark and you turn on the light, 00:19:02.67\00:19:07.18 and the light goes on - the same thing happens 00:19:07.21\00:19:12.25 with inflammation. 00:19:12.28\00:19:13.85 When you have NF-kappa beta active (on), we know 00:19:13.88\00:19:19.39 inflammation in the body is happening. 00:19:19.42\00:19:21.12 So we can see on the screen the results of the study. 00:19:21.16\00:19:26.26 If you can see, on the left side, you see a line 00:19:26.29\00:19:30.70 that starts going up and you can see...line 1-2-3, 00:19:30.73\00:19:35.70 can you identify that? 00:19:35.74\00:19:37.21 And then you see a bottom line that stays more or less 00:19:37.24\00:19:41.61 flat, okay. Oh yes. 00:19:41.64\00:19:43.85 The line that stayed more or less flat, 00:19:43.88\00:19:48.32 Let me guess - that's probably going to be the people 00:19:48.35\00:19:51.55 who just drank the water? Absolutely! Alright. 00:19:51.59\00:19:54.62 So no inflammation in the body happened. 00:19:54.66\00:19:57.83 But as soon as you ate that inflammatory breakfast, 00:19:57.86\00:20:02.53 immediately inflammation shoots up in your body. 00:20:02.86\00:20:07.30 And this is the issue - yes. 00:20:07.34\00:20:09.00 Now, can I just say this? Yes. 00:20:09.07\00:20:10.71 That's when you eat something that's not a good choice. 00:20:10.74\00:20:13.64 That's when you eat inflammatory food. 00:20:13.68\00:20:16.31 Sure, but if someone ate a whole wholesome breakfast, 00:20:16.34\00:20:20.18 that wouldn't happen. 00:20:20.22\00:20:21.55 That inflammation wouldn't go up at all. 00:20:21.58\00:20:25.09 So this is the issue - see, if you were to eat this 00:20:25.12\00:20:28.76 inflammatory food, oh and sausage, I forgot to add. 00:20:28.79\00:20:31.96 There was sausage there also. Okay. 00:23:28.84\00:23:33.94 So if you are cooking these foods with things like 00:23:33.98\00:23:39.91 charbroil or frying it, see, vegetables have 00:23:39.95\00:23:47.36 anti-inflammatory agents in them - so when you're putting 00:23:47.39\00:23:52.69 let's say broccoli on the grill, as damage has been happening 00:23:52.73\00:23:59.97 to the broccoli, the anti-inflammatory agents are 00:24:00.00\00:24:03.14 stopping the inflammation. 00:24:03.17\00:24:06.11 When you're frying something that's a little bit worse, 00:24:06.14\00:24:09.44 you do create some inflammation there in the vegetable products. 00:24:09.48\00:24:13.95 So the best thing is actually not to fry your vegetables, 00:24:13.98\00:24:17.89 a little bit of oil in the oven, it's fine. 00:24:17.92\00:24:20.76 But frying them, that creates other cancer-causing 00:24:20.79\00:24:25.49 substances and you want to avoid that. 00:24:25.53\00:24:27.10 But see, meat doesn't have anti-inflammatory agents, 00:24:27.13\00:24:32.03 just many people think that meat is a complete food. 00:24:32.07\00:24:35.47 It's actually a very deficient food. 00:24:35.50\00:24:38.04 It's only concentrated protein, no good source of carbohydrate, 00:24:38.07\00:24:43.98 no good vitamins, no anti-inflammatory agents. 00:24:44.01\00:24:50.15 So people would like to take a pill for this.
