Welcome to "Healthy Living!" 00:00:14.94\00:00:16.41 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:16.44\00:00:18.31 Today we are talking about caffeine. 00:00:18.35\00:00:21.18 Does it really help with alertness? 00:00:21.22\00:00:23.79 You might be surprised! 00:00:23.82\00:00:26.15 Are there major problems associated with its consumption? 00:00:26.19\00:00:29.72 And, are there therapies to deal with withdrawal? 00:00:29.76\00:00:33.80 Stay tuned for the answers. 00:00:33.83\00:00:36.03 Caffeine's claim to fame is its purported ability 00:01:12.00\00:01:15.67 to increase alertness. 00:01:15.70\00:01:17.47 Some people say they need caffeine 00:01:17.51\00:01:19.67 just to function properly. 00:01:19.71\00:01:21.38 Let's see what my guest, Dr. Eddie Ramirez, 00:01:21.41\00:01:24.38 has to say about that. 00:01:24.41\00:01:26.01 Welcome Eddie! Thank you. 00:01:26.05\00:01:28.48 And what do you have to say about the claim of 00:01:28.52\00:01:31.75 caffeine actually increasing alertness, 00:01:31.79\00:01:34.06 is that a good claim? 00:01:34.09\00:01:35.69 You know, there was a very good, well-designed study 00:01:35.72\00:01:38.79 from "Bristol University" in the United Kingdom, 00:01:38.83\00:01:42.13 in which they had almost 400 participants and what they did, 00:01:42.16\00:01:47.94 they started to measure their levels of alertness and the 00:01:47.97\00:01:53.38 different effects that caffeine was having in them, 00:01:53.41\00:01:57.08 and what they found was shocking! 00:01:57.11\00:01:58.91 They found out that these people actually created 00:01:58.95\00:02:04.05 a tolerance to the effects of caffeine. 00:02:04.09\00:02:07.82 So the researchers reported in the research paper 00:02:07.86\00:02:11.63 that caffeine drinkers, they're drinking the caffeine 00:02:11.66\00:02:16.36 not because it makes them alert, but because it makes them 00:02:16.40\00:02:21.10 feel normal. 00:02:21.14\00:02:23.14 See, as the effects of the caffeine withdrawal during 00:02:23.17\00:02:28.81 the day, you can see here on the screen how the people 00:02:28.84\00:02:34.75 that were feeling normal - that were not drinking caffeine 00:02:34.78\00:02:39.82 continued to feel normal the whole day. 00:02:39.85\00:02:42.42 The caffeine drinker at the beginning that you see on 00:02:42.46\00:02:44.66 the left side of your graphic, you see that they did not feel 00:02:44.69\00:02:49.26 good and not until they drank coffee they felt alert 00:02:49.30\00:02:53.87 and "normal." 00:02:53.90\00:02:56.50 So this study teaches us that you don't need to 00:02:56.54\00:03:01.24 drink caffeine to feel alert. 00:03:01.28\00:03:04.48 And this is another interesting point - the researchers 00:03:04.51\00:03:07.52 in the publication reported that the withdrawal symptoms 00:03:07.55\00:03:12.62 of caffeine were similar to having chemotherapy 00:03:12.65\00:03:17.73 in your body. That sounds terrible! 00:03:17.76\00:03:21.06 So the reason why you are drinking coffee and you think, 00:03:21.10\00:03:25.90 "Well, I need it for the morning," you know 00:03:25.93\00:03:29.20 unconsciously that if you don't drink that coffee, 00:03:29.24\00:03:32.24 you're going to have those severe side effects 00:03:32.27\00:03:34.94 inside of you - that's why you drink coffee and not 00:03:34.98\00:03:38.11 because it makes you alert. 00:03:38.15\00:03:39.65 It just makes you feel normal. 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.68 Well if you didn't drink it, you would be normal 00:03:41.72\00:03:44.45 all the time. 00:03:44.49\00:03:46.15 So what you're saying is normal people are normal all the time, 00:03:46.19\00:03:51.13 (That's right) coffee drinkers are only 00:03:51.16\00:03:52.79 at that level of alertness when they drink the coffee 00:03:52.83\00:03:57.13 and they didn't know it but if they didn't 00:03:57.17\00:03:59.87 drink it, they would feel at that high level all day. 00:03:59.90\00:04:03.41 I don't know if that's going to be good news 00:04:03.44\00:04:06.24 to all the people because I think it's fairly 00:04:06.27\00:04:08.48 addictive as well, isn't it? 00:04:08.51\00:04:09.84 Yes, and you know, in the world I move in, in the medical world, 00:04:09.88\00:04:15.52 you go to the hospital and you will see many doctors 00:04:15.55\00:04:19.52 with their cup of coffee. I don't drink coffee. 00:04:19.55\00:04:23.12 And you know, I remember years ago when I was in medical 00:04:23.16\00:04:26.19 school - I was in the inhumane duties of 36 hours continuously 00:04:26.23\00:04:32.20 in the hospital and I can tell you, I would do those 00:04:32.23\00:04:36.44 36 hours without a single drop of coffee. 00:04:36.47\00:04:40.98 I did not need that because I knew the side effects of it, 00:04:41.01\00:04:45.61 And you know, as I tell my patients, I don't want to be 00:04:45.65\00:04:50.99 a hypocrite - if I'm telling you something, it's because 00:04:51.02\00:04:54.96 I'm putting that in my life. 00:04:54.99\00:04:57.19 Where would the conviction come from if I was not doing that. 00:04:57.23\00:05:02.13 When I tell my patient - "You do exercise," it's because 00:05:02.16\00:05:05.20 I do exercise. 00:05:05.23\00:05:06.70 And look, I was very impressed this morning, very early, 00:05:06.74\00:05:10.21 there you were out in the weather and doing your running, 00:05:10.24\00:05:13.88 so that was very good. 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.44 You are a very good example of what you tell us to do. 00:05:15.48\00:05:20.62 And you know, there are many sources today of caffeine. 00:05:20.65\00:05:27.49 Yes, it seems to be just popping up everywhere! 00:05:27.52\00:05:30.53 And many people may not be aware of their intake of the caffeine. 00:05:30.83\00:05:33.29 Yes, I mean things that don't ordinarily or it's just not 00:05:34.26\00:05:38.17 there in the drink to start with - it's actually added. 00:05:38.20\00:05:40.80 Is that to make it an addictive drink? 00:05:40.84\00:05:43.37 Absolutely! Caffeine is one of the most addictive things 00:05:43.41\00:05:47.84 that you can find. 00:05:47.88\00:05:49.21 You can see on the screen some of the common sources 00:05:49.24\00:05:51.78 such as coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate 00:05:51.81\00:05:55.85 and even some pain relievers may have some caffeine. 00:05:55.88\00:06:00.56 Alright, so soft drinks didn't always - some of them did, 00:06:00.59\00:06:04.69 but some soft drinks didn't always have caffeine, 00:06:04.73\00:06:07.10 did they, or not as much. 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.00 That's right and it also depends. 00:06:09.03\00:06:11.93 Some people think, "Well, only the black ones have caffeine." 00:06:11.97\00:06:16.47 Not necessarily, there are some clear ones that have caffeine. 00:06:16.50\00:06:21.64 So I encourage my patients, "Go ahead and read labels." 00:06:21.68\00:06:26.65 When you read the label, then you will see 00:06:26.68\00:06:28.95 if it has caffeine. 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.72 Another very common source is the famous "energy drinks" 00:06:30.75\00:06:36.83 that they call them. 00:06:36.86\00:06:38.19 See, I have seen even people going to the E.R. 00:06:38.23\00:06:42.90 from drinking these types of drinks. 00:06:42.93\00:06:45.23 They have so much caffeine. 00:06:45.27\00:06:47.34 The E.R. is the emergency department - yes, 00:06:47.37\00:06:50.94 at the hospital. 00:06:50.97\00:06:53.41 So these things are not only bad for their mind, 00:06:53.44\00:06:59.55 but actually can be dangerous literally. 00:06:59.58\00:07:03.28 What else? What other bad effects are there? 00:07:03.32\00:07:06.89 There was a very interesting study done by "Loma Linda 00:07:06.92\00:07:10.49 University" a few years ago. 00:07:10.53\00:07:13.50 What they did - they had a spider and this poor spider 00:07:13.53\00:07:18.83 received a dose-adjusted level of what you would drink 00:07:18.87\00:07:24.57 of two cups of caffeine, of coffee - that amount of 00:07:24.61\00:07:29.08 coffee of course adjusted to the weight of the spider. 00:07:29.11\00:07:32.81 And you know, they put this spider to do its normal 00:07:32.85\00:07:36.38 web - it couldn't do it. 00:07:36.42\00:07:37.82 It just made a mess on that web. 00:07:37.85\00:07:40.86 It took 96 hours for the caffeine to go out of the 00:07:40.89\00:07:47.53 system and then the spider was able to make its proper web. 00:07:47.56\00:07:53.84 Now you may be saying, "Well, but I'm not a spider." 00:07:53.87\00:07:57.11 Yes, I know you're not a spider, but in the same way that 00:07:57.14\00:08:01.11 you have a nervous system, spiders have a nervous system, 00:08:01.14\00:08:05.58 and the way that caffeine interferes with your nervous 00:08:05.61\00:08:09.42 system, it also interferes with the nervous 00:08:09.45\00:08:12.05 system of the spider. 00:08:12.09\00:08:13.62 I'm just trying to do the mental arithmetic - that must be 00:08:14.09\00:08:16.39 around about four days, is that right? That's right! 00:08:16.42\00:08:19.49 To be able to function normally and that's not 00:08:19.53\00:08:23.37 something that I think any of us want to see happen. 00:08:23.40\00:08:25.73 I want to be able to function well, yes! 00:08:25.83\00:08:29.17 And you know, we have something that would be 00:08:29.20\00:08:31.67 equivalent to the brakes. 00:08:31.71\00:08:34.41 When you are talking to somebody and you shouldn't 00:08:34.44\00:08:38.51 be saying something - there's some brakes in your brain 00:08:38.55\00:08:41.88 that says, "Wait, wait, don't say that." 00:08:41.92\00:08:43.85 Well, there is research actually that shows that if 00:08:43.89\00:08:48.96 you have caffeine on board, you have higher risk of 00:08:48.99\00:08:54.23 gossiping - I don't know if you guys have that 00:08:54.26\00:08:55.86 problem here in Australia, of gossiping? 00:08:55.90\00:08:57.73 Oh, no, no, no, no, no. Laughter. 00:08:57.77\00:09:00.77 You're actually at higher risk of gossiping, 00:09:00.97\00:09:05.67 of saying something you should not say or you're not part of 00:09:05.71\00:09:09.68 that solution. 00:09:09.71\00:09:11.05 Wow, so how does that work? 00:09:11.08\00:09:14.88 The reason why that happens is because the brakes 00:09:14.92\00:09:19.12 in your head - when you are under the effects of caffeine, 00:09:19.15\00:09:23.93 you are moving the brakes. Let me ask you... 00:09:23.96\00:09:26.19 Oh, like the brakes in a car. 00:09:27.16\00:09:28.80 Would you get in the car without brakes? Okay. 00:09:28.83\00:09:31.67 Many people - that's the first thing they do as they 00:09:31.70\00:09:36.87 wake up - they take away their brakes! 00:09:36.91\00:09:39.67 You wouldn't drive a car without brakes. No. 00:09:39.71\00:09:42.78 There are many people that remove the brakes 00:09:42.81\00:09:45.25 from their head first thing. 00:09:45.28\00:09:47.68 And something that is confusing to many people 00:09:47.72\00:09:50.42 is that there is research that may show certain benefits 00:09:50.45\00:09:55.02 from caffeine. Okay. 00:09:55.06\00:09:57.29 And you know, you need to be careful - sometimes certain 00:09:57.33\00:10:02.96 research, I do lots of research, and sometimes 00:10:03.00\00:10:05.43 certain research has an agenda. 00:10:05.47\00:10:08.17 And whenever I read a scientific paper, 00:10:08.20\00:10:11.14 I always like to see who is sponsoring this. Yes. 00:10:11.17\00:10:15.98 And you will see that many of these good news about 00:10:16.01\00:10:20.68 caffeine type of studies are sponsored by the 00:10:20.72\00:10:26.09 industries that have links to coffee or soft drinks 00:10:26.12\00:10:31.29 or so forth industries. 00:10:31.33\00:10:33.50 So people like to hear good news about their bad habits! 00:10:33.53\00:10:40.37 That's the reason why something comes up, 00:10:40.40\00:10:43.30 man - you're going to read it in the newspaper; on the internet; 00:10:43.34\00:10:46.68 you're gonna see it on the television. 00:10:46.71\00:10:48.44 Yet I've seen, because I read a lot of research, 00:10:48.48\00:10:51.68 that sometimes another paper came at the same time 00:10:51.71\00:10:56.25 talking about the negative effects of caffeine and 00:10:56.28\00:10:59.39 so forth, you don't hear absolutely anything about it. 00:10:59.42\00:11:03.73 That's really bad, isn't it? Really, really bad! 00:11:03.76\00:11:06.46 I remember, going back some years, it was in the country 00:11:06.49\00:11:10.83 in West Australia living there and I went to Sydney 00:11:10.87\00:11:14.10 for a conference and I thought, "Oh, on the way back I'll just 00:11:14.14\00:11:18.04 I'll get a mammogram," so I booked in on short notice, 00:11:18.07\00:11:20.88 and then I was preparing to do that - they said, "Oh, you're 00:11:20.91\00:11:25.51 not supposed to have had coffee for 48 hours 00:11:25.55\00:11:28.25 before having a mammogram. 00:11:28.28\00:11:29.82 And I said, "Oh not a problem, I haven't had any for 48 years 00:11:29.85\00:11:32.45 cause I was 48 at the time, but I was puzzled about that. 00:11:32.49\00:11:37.13 And so when it was all over, I said, "Look, I'm just curious, 00:11:37.16\00:11:40.03 what's the connection between drinking coffee 00:11:40.06\00:11:43.40 and having a mammogram?" 00:11:43.43\00:11:44.80 And they said, "Oh well, a lot of women experience 00:11:44.83\00:11:47.87 breast pain routinely and when they pull that clamp down 00:11:47.90\00:11:55.04 that could make it a lot worse." 00:11:55.08\00:11:56.68 And so I was just intrigued about that but what they 00:11:56.71\00:12:00.02 said was that a lot of women, when they go off caffeine or 00:12:00.05\00:12:04.72 coffee, whatever it is they're using for the 48 hours, 00:12:04.75\00:12:08.09 the breast pain that they've been having for years 00:12:08.12\00:12:10.26 isn't there anymore. 00:12:10.29\00:12:11.63 My own wife, she used to 00:12:11.66\00:12:16.20 drink a lot of soda pop, the black type, 00:12:16.23\00:12:23.51 with cola and she had this tremendous pain in her breast, 00:12:23.54\00:12:30.41 and not only that, little cysts started to come about. 00:12:30.45\00:12:34.68 She goes to the doctor, the doctor identifies 00:12:34.72\00:12:37.55 some of those cysts and she asked her about her habits, 00:12:37.59\00:12:40.59 this was before we got married, and she said the amount of 00:12:40.62\00:12:46.70 soda that she was drinking, more than 12 cans per week, 00:12:46.73\00:12:51.17 (Okay) the doctor said you have to stop drinking that soda. 00:12:51.20\00:12:55.87 She stopped - the pain went away. 00:12:55.90\00:12:57.87 Who wants to live with pain? 00:12:59.34\00:13:00.81 I mean, that's a good thing to know. 00:13:00.84\00:13:02.34 I hope it's going to be helping some people out there. 00:13:03.35\00:13:05.51 I know when you really love something, it's hard to think 00:13:05.55\00:13:08.48 about not having it but I guess you weigh up. 00:13:08.52\00:13:11.95 So also it affects many systems and people don't realize that. 00:13:11.99\00:13:17.03 For example, the stomach is something that suffers 00:13:17.06\00:13:20.03 very much every time you drink caffeine. 00:13:20.06\00:13:23.53 When you are drinking caffeine, you are actually creating 00:13:23.57\00:13:28.70 problems with some little doors. 00:13:28.74\00:13:32.41 You have some little doors that are called "sphincters" 00:13:32.44\00:13:34.94 in your stomach and those little doors are supposed 00:13:34.98\00:13:40.02 to close when there's food so digestion can take place 00:13:40.05\00:13:44.25 properly, but see when you are drinking caffeine, any source 00:13:44.29\00:13:50.43 of caffeine, those little doors start to malfunction - so they 00:13:50.46\00:13:56.60 may open and when you're doing digestion it's like a little 00:13:56.63\00:14:01.04 washing machine, you know, it moves quite a bit 00:14:01.07\00:14:04.31 the food and so forth. 00:14:04.34\00:14:05.67 So as it's doing that mechanical work, the acid from the 00:14:05.71\00:14:10.41 stomach starts coming up and things like heartburn and 00:14:10.45\00:14:15.68 these types of problems, the person stops drinking 00:14:15.72\00:14:20.96 caffeine and many people get beneficial effects from it. 00:14:20.99\00:14:25.49 Not only the little doors problem but also ulcers. 00:14:25.53\00:14:30.17 We know very well, you are at higher risk of having 00:14:30.20\00:14:33.90 a stomach ulcer if you are a regular caffeine drinker. 00:14:33.94\00:14:41.61 And also the brain - if you want to see this with your 00:14:41.64\00:14:45.25 own eyes, visit my page: dreddieramirez.com 00:14:45.28\00:14:50.72 There, I have a video that shows how just drinking one cup of 00:14:50.75\00:14:57.43 caffeine will decrease your blood flow in 40% 00:14:57.46\00:15:02.16 in your brain. Forty percent? 00:15:02.20\00:15:04.33 Forty percent! This is measured with a functional MRI, 00:15:04.37\00:15:10.77 so you have the before and the after. 00:15:10.81\00:15:12.91 You can go and see it with your own eyes. 00:15:12.94\00:15:15.14 This is a clip from the news. 00:15:15.18\00:15:18.28 And this is not good - see, for the health of your brain, 00:15:18.31\00:15:25.15 you want to have as much blood flow as possible, 00:15:25.19\00:15:28.32 not decrease the blood flow. 00:15:28.36\00:15:30.99 That's a very, very powerful finding. 00:15:31.03\00:15:33.03 I'm just pretty shocked actually because that's almost 00:15:33.06\00:15:35.53 half of the oxygen that's meant to be, 00:15:35.56\00:15:37.70 you know, it's half the blood. 00:15:37.73\00:15:39.37 Absolutely! That's the reason why when you are under the 00:15:39.40\00:15:42.20 effects of caffeine, you may do things maybe a little bit 00:15:42.24\00:15:45.74 faster but you commit the double-errors. 00:15:45.77\00:15:49.21 So especially if you are like a university student, 00:15:49.24\00:15:53.31 high school student, that's the last thing you want 00:15:53.35\00:15:56.12 in your system before your test because why would you 00:15:56.15\00:16:00.36 want to decrease the blood flow to your brain and especially 00:16:00.39\00:16:03.86 the frontal lobe. 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.23 The frontal lobe is when you evaluate if something 00:16:05.26\00:16:09.30 is correct or not correct. 00:16:09.33\00:16:11.53 Here you are on a test asking you a question, multiple 00:16:11.57\00:16:15.04 answers - they're trying to trick you and you don't know 00:16:15.07\00:16:18.97 which one you're going to choose and then you 00:16:19.01\00:16:21.64 decrease the blood flow - it's even worse, you know, 00:16:21.68\00:16:25.15 and you are going to be at high 00:16:25.18\00:16:26.82 risk of choosing the wrong answer. 00:16:26.85\00:16:28.85 And it's not just students and not just people being 00:16:28.88\00:16:31.29 tested, it's just our everyday life - we need to 00:16:31.32\00:16:34.76 have everything going for us to be able to make good 00:16:34.79\00:16:36.66 decisions and function well. That's right! 00:16:36.73\00:16:38.36 Another problem also is with females 00:16:38.39\00:16:40.76 and especially bone health. 00:16:40.80\00:16:44.20 This is something very well published, very well researched. 00:16:44.23\00:16:48.20 We know that when you are drinking caffeine, you are 00:16:48.24\00:16:52.74 actually throwing away the calcium from your bones. 00:16:52.77\00:16:56.71 And you know, here in Australia, osteoporosis is a huge 00:16:56.75\00:17:01.45 problem. Yes, it is. 00:17:01.48\00:17:02.82 And why put more gasoline on the fire - stop it, you know, 00:17:02.85\00:17:09.79 don't damage your bones. 00:17:09.82\00:17:12.09 So when you are drinking coffee, there are even 00:17:12.13\00:17:15.90 studies that show that young girls, when they drink coffee, 00:17:15.93\00:17:19.63 the risk of fracture increases even at a young age. 00:17:19.67\00:17:24.04 Even at the young age - that's really bad because 00:17:24.07\00:17:26.37 normally your bones are strengthening 00:17:26.41\00:17:28.48 while you are young. 00:17:28.51\00:17:29.84 That's exactly what you're supposed to be doing 00:17:29.88\00:17:32.21 before you get to menopause, you want to make sure 00:17:32.25\00:17:35.25 you have the strongest bones possible - very good point! 00:17:35.28\00:17:39.02 Well I just hope this is going down well with our people 00:17:39.05\00:17:42.52 tuning in because there must be some ways that we can 00:17:42.56\00:17:47.13 deal with this or I mean, I guess people get withdrawals 00:17:47.16\00:17:50.00 if they do... 00:17:50.03\00:17:51.37 Let me give you the plan I share with my patients. 00:17:51.40\00:17:55.17 but let me just mention two more things. 00:17:55.20\00:17:57.77 Coffee will also throw away your vitamin B6 00:17:57.81\00:18:03.31 and iron in your body. 00:18:03.35\00:18:06.18 I tell them that this is the contradictory drug. 00:18:06.21\00:18:09.98 I have people that come for consultations and they ask 00:18:10.02\00:18:13.96 me - "Doctor can I get a supplement of vitamin B6? 00:18:13.99\00:18:16.73 Can I get some iron? Can I get some calcium?" 00:18:16.76\00:18:20.13 And then I ask them, "Do you drink coffee?" "Well, yes." 00:18:20.16\00:18:23.77 Here they are drinking something they are going to throw away. 00:18:23.80\00:18:28.07 There is no need for this to happen. 00:18:28.10\00:18:31.61 So what strategy are we going to use to conquer 00:18:33.38\00:18:37.08 the problem of caffeine? 00:18:37.11\00:18:39.81 Well what do you tell your patients? 00:18:39.85\00:18:41.22 Well, #1 I tell them that they would benefit from some 00:18:41.25\00:18:45.89 simple hydrotherapy and hydrotherapy is 00:18:45.92\00:18:49.62 the use of water in a wise way. 00:18:49.66\00:18:53.83 So what I want you to do if you want to conquer 00:18:53.86\00:18:57.07 caffeine usage, you make sure that you are starting 00:18:57.10\00:19:01.70 your day with a nice hot shower, 3 minutes, followed by 00:19:01.74\00:19:07.78 1 minute cold. 00:19:07.81\00:19:11.21 Three minutes hot, 1 minute cold and you're going to 00:19:11.25\00:19:15.08 do this two or three times. 00:19:15.12\00:19:16.89 How cold are we talking about? 00:19:16.92\00:19:18.95 The younger you are, the higher the contrast. 00:19:18.99\00:19:22.72 So please use common sense, if you are a little bit more 00:19:22.76\00:19:26.63 advanced in age, that contrast shouldn't be that much. 00:19:26.66\00:19:31.03 What you're doing with this, I call this 00:19:31.07\00:19:33.74 "the vegetarian coffee!" It will wake you up! 00:19:33.77\00:19:37.47 You don't need a coffee to make yourself alert! 00:19:37.51\00:19:42.11 So instead of grabbing your coffee, you start your day 00:19:42.14\00:19:46.28 with this tip - that hot shower followed by cold. 00:19:46.31\00:19:50.19 If you're having some troubles with nervousness and so forth, 00:19:50.22\00:19:56.73 I'm going to give you two strategies. 00:19:56.76\00:19:58.16 You can see them on the screen. 00:19:58.19\00:19:59.53 You can go into a neutral temperature bathtub. 00:19:59.56\00:20:03.33 It's not hot, it's not cold, it's about the temperature 00:20:03.37\00:20:07.00 of your body that relaxes the nerves or #2. 00:20:07.04\00:20:12.21 You want to put some ice in the back of your head 00:20:12.24\00:20:17.11 and that actually helps relieve many of the 00:20:17.15\00:20:20.92 headache problems, okay? Okay. 00:20:20.95\00:20:23.65 So, hydrotherapy. 00:20:23.69\00:20:25.09 #2. What you can do is you can eat a good, healthy 00:20:25.12\00:20:30.73 breakfast! 00:20:30.76\00:20:32.09 Many people eat too much in the evening, and you know, 00:20:32.13\00:20:37.60 the stomach is tired - it's been working the whole night, 00:20:37.63\00:20:44.51 so the morning comes and it says, "You know, forget it, 00:20:44.54\00:20:47.84 no more food." So you're not hungry 00:20:47.88\00:20:50.35 because your stomach has been working hard the whole night. 00:20:50.38\00:20:55.45 This is a big problem is a big problem in Australia. 00:20:55.48\00:20:58.22 A lot of people skip breakfast, children skip breakfast, 00:20:58.25\00:21:01.26 many, many people and, of course, then what happens 00:21:01.29\00:21:03.93 is as the day wears into the midmorning, 00:21:03.96\00:21:06.93 they're hungry and they eat, but it's not usually 00:21:06.96\00:21:10.50 something that you would eat at a meal. That's right! 00:21:10.53\00:21:13.23 You might talk about what it is, it's not healthy. 00:21:13.27\00:21:15.17 It's as if you're starting to drive 00:21:15.20\00:21:16.97 towards Brisbane, what do you do? 00:21:17.01\00:21:18.71 The first thing you do, you fill in the gasoline tank, 00:21:18.77\00:21:21.14 then you go with the proper amount of petrol. 00:21:21.18\00:21:25.21 But, you're starting the day, why not put some good high 00:21:25.25\00:21:30.69 octane type of quality of food. 00:21:30.72\00:21:33.76 So a good plant-based diet with whole grains, maybe some 00:21:33.79\00:21:41.03 legumes and something that tastes good that fills you up. 00:21:41.06\00:21:47.07 It should be the biggest meal of the day. 00:21:47.10\00:21:50.31 Do you know, whenever I ask groups and say, 00:21:50.34\00:21:52.57 "What's the most important meal of the day?" 00:21:52.61\00:21:54.81 and you get a chorus, "Breakfast!" They know! 00:21:54.84\00:21:57.55 Everybody knows, but I don't know the figure, but it could be 00:21:57.95\00:22:02.45 somewhere around a third of Australians, somewhere 00:22:02.48\00:22:04.85 there, I think, who don't actually eat it. 00:22:04.89\00:22:07.09 We KNOW, but we don't do it, and you just really 00:22:07.12\00:22:10.73 put your finger on why that is because of that BIG 00:22:10.76\00:22:14.30 evening meal and your poor stomach, by morning, 00:22:14.33\00:22:17.33 it's feeling like "It's my turn for a rest, you know, 00:22:17.37\00:22:19.93 I've been working all night while you've been sleeping," 00:22:19.97\00:22:21.80 and so that's where you have to start, is it? 00:22:21.84\00:22:24.47 And it's not only a bad habit, 00:22:24.51\00:22:26.61 it's actually bad for your health. 00:22:26.64\00:22:29.11 You actually can end up with something like reflux 00:22:29.14\00:22:34.48 in your stomach every night because as you lay down 00:22:34.52\00:22:37.62 with the stomach full, when you lay down, 00:22:37.65\00:22:39.85 you push the upper door that I was mentioning, 00:22:39.89\00:22:42.66 the acid comes up, it burns there and you can 00:22:42.69\00:22:45.76 actually get yourself a cancer in the esophagus 00:22:45.79\00:22:50.60 if you burn night after night, after night that. 00:22:50.63\00:22:54.14 So what you need to do is 3 hours before going to bed, 00:22:54.17\00:22:59.01 should be your last meal. 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.31 Another point, avoid tobacco! 00:23:01.34\00:23:05.48 You can even see it in their name - - 00:23:06.11\00:23:08.05 "caf-fe-ine, ni-co-tine," they are actually 00:23:08.08\00:23:12.85 close cousins those two substances, 00:23:12.89\00:23:16.62 and one calls for the other one. 00:23:16.66\00:23:20.46 So, if you are drinking coffee, 00:23:20.50\00:23:23.37 you may be calling for that nicotine. 00:23:26.87\00:23:28.40 So what I recommend to my patients is - let's tackle 00:23:28.44\00:23:31.61 both at the same time. 00:23:31.64\00:23:33.54 So both of them, they need to go away. 00:23:33.58\00:23:37.45 There's a program that has been offered here in Australia, 00:23:37.48\00:23:43.08 "Breathe Freely," it's called. Yes. 00:23:43.12\00:23:45.65 Yes, I've seen some of that. Excellent! Excellent! 00:23:45.69\00:23:48.12 It's an excellent program. 00:23:48.16\00:23:49.92 I would recommend it to anybody that wants to quit smoking. 00:23:49.96\00:23:53.73 Just Google where in your close location is that 00:23:53.76\00:23:58.20 program being offered. 00:23:58.23\00:23:59.67 And also, make sure that you are drinking enough water! 00:23:59.70\00:24:04.71 This is a huge problem, we could just talk about 00:24:04.74\00:24:07.08 this for a long time. 00:24:07.11\00:24:09.14 But let me tell you this, when a patient comes to the 00:24:09.18\00:24:12.98 hospital, we have to measure their liquids and so forth, 00:24:13.01\00:24:22.29 and nurses do some mathematics to make sure 00:24:22.32\00:24:25.66 that the patient is having enough liquids 00:24:25.69\00:24:27.73 in them and so forth. 00:24:27.76\00:24:29.26 And I can tell you, many people don't have 00:24:29.30\00:24:34.57 enough liquids on board. 00:24:34.60\00:24:37.01 They drink all kinds of things except water! 00:24:37.04\00:24:39.74 So when you are going to start doing higher water intake, 00:24:39.77\00:24:44.81 the water is going to help cleanse the system. 00:24:44.85\00:24:47.95 How do you know you have enough water on board? 00:24:47.98\00:24:49.92 Watch your urine - it needs to be clear and without smell. 00:24:49.95\00:24:54.82 Oh yes and it's interesting, I think caffeine, 00:24:54.86\00:24:57.99 coffee and so on, they actually dehydrate, 00:24:58.03\00:25:00.50 don't they? Absolutely! 00:25:00.53\00:25:01.86 You take away more water than what you put. 00:25:01.90\00:25:05.40 So some people say, "Well okay, you're taking away my coffee, 00:25:05.43\00:25:08.20 what am I gonna do?" 00:25:08.24\00:25:09.57 Well, why don't you switch that 00:25:09.60\00:25:12.57 for a herbal tea without caffeine. 00:25:12.61\00:25:17.68 We don't have the time but there are some major issues 00:25:17.71\00:25:21.42 both with black tea and green tea. 00:25:21.45\00:25:25.52 I know this is an inheritance that the British gave you here. 00:25:25.55\00:25:29.52 It is tradition and so forth, but the caffeine content 00:25:29.56\00:25:34.16 is not good for you. 00:25:34.20\00:25:36.56 The green tea, I've seen that with my own eyes in Africa. 00:25:36.60\00:25:42.30 Before you harvest green tea, you hit the plant with a stick. 00:25:42.34\00:25:46.61 The reason why you do that is you want to make the plant 00:25:46.64\00:25:49.41 "angry" - it releases all kinds of toxic substances 00:25:49.44\00:25:53.78 and then you harvest. 00:25:53.82\00:25:55.15 See, if you hit that plant and you bring a goat, 00:25:55.18\00:25:58.29 the goat wouldn't eat that plant because when it tastes 00:25:58.32\00:26:01.06 it, he says, "This is bad, I don't want this." 00:26:01.09\00:26:02.82 Yet what do we do as humans? 00:26:02.86\00:26:04.79 We pick it up and make a tea out of it. 00:26:04.83\00:26:08.06 Do not do that! You are consuming very toxic substances. 00:26:08.10\00:26:13.60 Yes, there are a few antioxidants there, but that 00:26:13.64\00:26:16.14 does not justify the negative affects that people have. 00:26:16.17\00:26:20.18 They talk about goats being silly, that seems like 00:26:20.21\00:26:23.11 in that case, we're sillier than the goat. That's right! 00:26:23.14\00:26:26.98 The next thing I want you to do, I want you to do exercise. 00:26:27.02\00:26:31.69 See, substitute the coffee habit with a good morning walk! 00:26:31.72\00:26:38.73 That morning, invigorating walk will help you start the day 00:26:38.76\00:26:44.90 on with the right leg. 00:26:44.93\00:26:48.27 And when you are doing your exercise, I want you to be 00:26:48.30\00:26:53.31 thankful; I want you to think of positive things; 00:26:53.34\00:26:56.28 I want you to start the day in the proper way, 00:26:56.31\00:27:01.22 and it will give you that energy, it will open your 00:27:01.25\00:27:04.25 appetite so you can come home and eat your good breakfast, 00:27:04.29\00:27:07.82 then you go to the activity of the day. 00:27:07.86\00:27:10.73 Yes, all that sounds like a really good lineup 00:27:10.76\00:27:12.99 of things to do and that's been really very helpful. 00:27:13.03\00:27:16.63 One last one - I want to give you a Bible promise! 00:27:16.67\00:27:21.00 And that Bible promise is found in Jeremiah 32:27. 00:27:21.04\00:27:27.34 It says - "I am the God of all flesh, is there anything 00:27:27.38\00:27:32.55 too hard for Me?" 00:27:32.58\00:27:34.72 For God, there are no impossibles. 00:27:34.75\00:27:37.89 That's beautiful and it's really important I think. 00:27:37.92\00:27:41.32 Whenever - I mean change is really a challenging thing. 00:27:41.36\00:27:44.59 And it's very useful to tap into spiritual resources when we're 00:27:44.63\00:27:47.93 going to make any changes. 00:27:47.96\00:27:49.36 There are two laws of change; one is "change is inevitable," 00:27:49.40\00:27:53.54 and "change will be resisted." That's right! 00:27:53.57\00:27:56.10 So I don't know how people out there are feeling about 00:27:56.14\00:27:58.51 what we've been hearing. 00:27:58.54\00:27:59.87 Certainly you've given us a lot of good reasons 00:27:59.91\00:28:02.24 to avoid caffeine. 00:28:02.28\00:28:04.45 You've given us a lot of good strategies 00:28:04.48\00:28:06.61 on how to deal with that and the side effects. 00:28:06.65\00:28:11.65 So I hope that's been very helpful for you and you can 00:28:11.69\00:28:15.86 watch our programs on demand if you want to visit our website at 00:28:15.89\00:28:19.83 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:19.86\00:28:22.26 and just click on the watch button. 00:28:22.30\00:28:24.80 We hope you'll join us next time 00:28:24.83\00:28:26.30 as we discuss more secrets of healthy living. 00:28:26.33\00:28:29.64
