Thank you! 00:01:20.18\00:01:22.44 Tell us the secrets that you have for us today. 00:01:22.48\00:01:25.45 Well, there is a lot of research today trying to find out 00:01:25.48\00:01:30.55 what we can do in order to reach 100. 00:01:30.59\00:01:34.76 One of the latest principles that have come out, 00:01:34.79\00:01:41.96 at the University of Florida, (there is a hospital there 00:01:42.00\00:01:45.93 that is called "Celebrations," you can Google it if you're 00:01:45.97\00:01:48.80 interested on the topic), have come out with word 00:01:48.84\00:01:52.27 "CREATION" that talks about those eight principles, 00:01:52.31\00:01:56.64 and every one of those letters has something to do with 00:01:56.68\00:02:00.62 a good principle. 00:02:00.65\00:02:01.98 Like an acronym. That's right! 00:02:02.02\00:02:03.92 So the "C" would be for "choice;" 00:02:03.95\00:02:07.06 the "R" would be for "rest;" 00:02:07.09\00:02:10.16 the "E" would be for "environment;" 00:02:10.19\00:02:12.86 Oh I was thinking you were going to say "exercise" 00:02:12.89\00:02:15.23 actually, so environment, yes. 00:02:15.26\00:02:17.30 "A" for "activity;" the "T" would be the "trust;" 00:02:17.37\00:02:22.00 and then we have "interpersonal relationships;" 00:02:22.04\00:02:26.44 then "outlook," and then "nutrition." 00:02:26.47\00:02:29.91 Wow, that's beautiful! 00:02:29.94\00:02:31.61 A really good lineup of things that all play a role. 00:02:31.65\00:02:34.18 Some of those are interesting, you know - the interpersonal 00:02:34.22\00:02:36.52 relationships and that's very much what we like to 00:02:36.55\00:02:40.12 promote in this program because mental, physical, 00:02:40.16\00:02:43.19 and spiritual health- that's all of who we really are 00:02:43.22\00:02:46.49 and they all blend in together and they impact on each other. 00:02:46.53\00:02:49.43 So it's really good to come from different angles 00:02:49.46\00:02:53.00 for whole person health, that sounds beautiful. 00:02:53.03\00:02:56.20 If you notice, the very first one was about choice, 00:02:56.24\00:03:00.38 and whenever we have choice, we need to make 00:03:00.41\00:03:04.25 a decision, so all change needs to start with a decision. 00:03:04.28\00:03:11.35 You have to decide and I say this in the clinical practice. 00:03:11.39\00:03:14.52 I know that if there's a smoker there, if he says, "Well, 00:03:14.56\00:03:19.53 maybe I'll quit smoking," it's not going to happen. 00:03:19.56\00:03:22.50 It needs to be with all your heart, then change can 00:03:22.53\00:03:27.30 happen in you. 00:03:27.34\00:03:28.67 And what happens is that sometimes we human beings 00:03:28.70\00:03:31.91 are a little bit reluctant to make changes, yet we need 00:03:31.94\00:03:35.44 changes to be prosperous. 00:03:35.48\00:03:37.61 And you know, the part of the brain that plays a very 00:03:37.65\00:03:40.92 important role regarding your decisions - it's called the 00:03:40.95\00:03:45.49 "frontal lobe" of your brain. 00:03:45.52\00:03:47.49 Before you go on with that, you're talking about 00:03:47.52\00:03:49.89 decisions and choices and so on, and change, and I remember 00:03:49.92\00:03:54.26 reading somewhere once that two laws of change; 00:03:54.30\00:03:58.03 change is inevitable and change will be resisted, 00:03:58.07\00:04:01.67 even a change for the better. 00:04:01.70\00:04:03.47 That's right! Strangely enough. 00:04:03.51\00:04:05.07 That fascinated me that we would resist a change that was 00:04:05.11\00:04:08.88 going to make life better, but we do. 00:04:08.91\00:04:11.78 After working for 23 years in lifestyle centers in Europe, 00:04:11.81\00:04:17.52 in Africa, in America - I've seen that with my very own eyes. 00:04:17.55\00:04:23.22 And you know, we actually have 00:04:23.26\00:04:25.49 the hardware to make good decisions. 00:04:25.53\00:04:28.76 For example, a cat has only 3.5 of his brain is frontal lobes. 00:04:28.80\00:04:34.80 A dog is 7%, who does more tricks, the cat or the dog? 00:04:34.84\00:04:42.04 Definitely the dog! 00:04:42.08\00:04:43.41 Now, who can do more tricks, a monkey or a dog? 00:04:43.45\00:04:48.08 I haven't really seen a monkey doing tricks. 00:04:48.12\00:04:51.99 Well maybe because you don't have too many here in Australia. 00:04:52.02\00:04:54.16 Well no, we don't but I do love them. 00:04:54.19\00:04:57.23 Seventeen percent of the chimpanzee is frontal lobe. 00:04:57.26\00:05:02.13 That's why monkeys can actually do more complex things 00:05:02.16\00:05:06.53 than a dog, but you know... 00:05:06.57\00:05:08.20 And the frontal lobe is the executive part of the brain. 00:05:09.04\00:05:11.77 Executive part of the brain where you 00:05:11.81\00:05:13.27 take the choices and so forth. 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.44 And whenever people say that "You came from monkeys 00:05:15.48\00:05:19.75 and so forth - well there's actually a huge difference 00:05:19.78\00:05:23.99 between what a monkey is and what a human is. 00:05:24.02\00:05:28.82 A human has 33% of the whole brain is frontal lobes. 00:05:28.86\00:05:35.06 So you have the hardware there to make good decisions. 00:05:35.10\00:05:42.17 The physical part is there. 00:05:42.20\00:05:44.47 You just have to decide to make the change, then it can happen. 00:05:44.51\00:05:50.38 Right and so the other part of the brain that tends 00:05:50.41\00:05:53.01 to want to take charge is the feeling-part of the brain, 00:05:53.05\00:05:56.45 (that's right), the emotional part of the brain and we 00:05:56.48\00:05:58.59 often say, "I don't feel like doing that," 00:05:58.62\00:06:01.32 and that then takes control, that's not a good thing. 00:06:01.36\00:06:05.26 So you have three parts of your brain that play a very 00:06:05.29\00:06:08.00 important role - you have your frontal lobes, that one 00:06:08.03\00:06:10.53 asks the question - "Is it correct, yes or no?" 00:06:10.57\00:06:14.50 Then you have the other part of the brain that is not 00:06:14.54\00:06:16.50 frontal lobe, that is that limbic system - that one asks 00:06:16.54\00:06:19.84 the question - "Is it logical, yes or no?" 00:06:19.87\00:06:23.41 And the limbic system asks the 00:06:23.45\00:06:25.45 question - "Do I like it, yes or no?" 00:06:25.48\00:06:28.92 Yes and that's it, that's all it does. 00:06:28.95\00:06:30.92 And see, you need to use those three parts of your brain 00:06:30.95\00:06:34.32 to make good decisions. 00:06:34.36\00:06:36.26 Sometimes there are things that you may like, 00:06:36.29\00:06:38.39 yet you need, so we have three counselors which are 00:06:38.43\00:06:43.13 called, "Judgment, Reason and Conscience." 00:06:43.16\00:06:46.84 So judgment has to do with the question: 00:06:46.87\00:06:51.81 "Is this the best for me?" 00:06:51.84\00:06:54.51 See, when you go to the store, don't ask the question, 00:06:54.54\00:06:58.15 "What's wrong with this?" No, that's the wrong question. 00:06:58.18\00:07:00.78 Ask the question, "What is the best? I want the best 00:07:00.82\00:07:05.59 for me." In that way, judgment will work properly. 00:07:05.62\00:07:09.46 Then you have reason. Reason has to do with taking 00:07:09.49\00:07:13.43 into account all the different factors and then you make 00:07:13.46\00:07:18.63 a decision - that's why you need to be very careful 00:07:18.67\00:07:21.70 what kind of information you put in your head. 00:07:21.74\00:07:24.47 I see this very often in medical consultation. 00:07:24.51\00:07:27.81 People go to the internet and start reading all kinds of 00:07:27.84\00:07:32.21 pseudoscience and they believe it's true. 00:07:32.25\00:07:36.62 Be very careful - use reason properly because 00:07:36.65\00:07:42.56 bad information will give bad behavior. 00:07:42.59\00:07:47.96 And as I recently saw in a doctor's office, 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.60 it said, "You will be charged an extra $20 for 00:07:50.63\00:07:55.80 diagnosis found on the internet." 00:07:55.84\00:07:58.37 Self-diagnosis found on the internet. 00:07:58.41\00:08:00.78 Be careful, use your reason correctly. 00:08:00.81\00:08:05.18 And finally, we have the conscience part. 00:08:05.21\00:08:08.28 Conscience has to do with the moral and ethics side of things. 00:08:08.32\00:08:13.62 For a Christian, this would be the question - "Is this 00:08:14.56\00:08:18.19 the will of God or not?" 00:08:18.23\00:08:20.46 So that will was a special gift that God gave to human beings 00:08:20.50\00:08:26.03 at the very beginning. 00:08:26.07\00:08:27.94 And what happens is that when you have true love, 00:08:27.97\00:08:32.81 you have to decide if it's related to something 00:08:32.84\00:08:38.11 related with love. 00:08:38.15\00:08:39.61 You have to have the possibility of saying, "No." 00:08:39.65\00:08:43.15 For example, I've never seen a couple that tells me 00:08:43.18\00:08:46.72 how he proposed to his wife; he didn't get his hand 00:08:46.76\00:08:50.43 and twist the hand of the future wife and say, "You have to 00:08:50.46\00:08:54.96 say "yes," you have to say "yes." 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.43 It doesn't work like that, you know, it doesn't work like that. 00:08:56.46\00:09:00.07 You have to have that ability of choosing, 00:09:00.10\00:09:04.81 and God in His infinite love provides us with 00:09:04.84\00:09:09.68 that reflection of His love in us so that we could 00:09:09.71\00:09:13.45 take decisions and love. 00:09:13.48\00:09:16.48 And the thing is that, you know, if there's no love, 00:09:16.52\00:09:19.25 there's no happiness and that's why we need to have 00:09:19.29\00:09:24.46 love in our lives. 00:09:24.49\00:09:26.33 Love others and have the ability to let others love us. 00:09:26.36\00:09:30.27 Yes, and it's interesting, I mean, sometimes when we think 00:09:30.30\00:09:34.14 of love, we think of fluffy feelings and that's 00:09:34.17\00:09:38.51 from a different part of the brain and that's nice, 00:09:38.54\00:09:40.78 that comes, but the Bible also talks about what love is. 00:09:40.81\00:09:44.48 It gives a beautiful definition in Corinthians - it's patient, 00:09:44.51\00:09:48.48 it's kind - all those lovely things and it doesn't do 00:09:48.52\00:09:52.82 any harm and it doesn't keep a record of wrongs. Yes! 00:09:52.85\00:09:56.32 You know, all those sorts of things and that's really 00:09:56.36\00:10:01.10 more about what love actually is and it brings with it 00:10:01.13\00:10:04.33 some fluffy feelings too. That's right! 00:10:04.37\00:10:07.54 But that's not the basis... 00:10:07.57\00:10:09.20 And that's not the basis, you know, it is a decision 00:10:09.24\00:10:12.17 that you need to take. 00:10:12.21\00:10:13.98 And you know, God made human beings and put them 00:10:14.01\00:10:17.68 in a perfect environment; everything was nice; 00:10:17.71\00:10:20.62 air was fresh; food was healthy; relationships were great, 00:10:20.65\00:10:25.49 but still human beings needed to take a decision. 00:10:25.52\00:10:30.23 And you know, that decision was based on two trees. 00:10:30.26\00:10:35.16 You had the tree of life which actually today could be 00:10:35.20\00:10:38.97 representing all those good decisions that you need to take; 00:10:39.00\00:10:44.11 everything that is good for you, that is life-giving. 00:10:44.14\00:10:47.48 But then you also have the decision of the tree of 00:10:47.51\00:10:52.01 knowledge of good and evil. 00:10:52.05\00:10:54.98 And you know, that represented those poor choices that 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.65 sometimes we take that unfortunately have negative 00:10:58.69\00:11:02.86 consequences, unhealthy consequences and life-destroying 00:11:02.89\00:11:07.93 practices. 00:11:07.96\00:11:09.33 And God never wanted us to partake of that. 00:11:09.36\00:11:15.04 And as we went ahead and disobeyed the will of God, 00:11:15.07\00:11:20.08 we got ourselves in big trouble. (Really big trouble!) 00:11:20.11\00:11:24.28 And sin was introduced in the picture. 00:11:24.31\00:11:26.85 I can illustrate this with you; as a mother that bakes 00:11:26.88\00:11:31.39 some good-smelling cookies and she puts them in a jar, 00:11:31.42\00:11:35.79 and she says, "Johnny, I need to go out of the house 00:11:35.82\00:11:39.29 for a minute, please don't eat the cookies." 00:11:39.33\00:11:42.10 So the mother goes out and it's taking longer, Johnny goes 00:11:42.13\00:11:45.90 and starts to open the jar and as he is starting to put his 00:11:45.93\00:11:49.57 hand in the jar, he hears the door being opened. 00:11:49.60\00:11:53.27 Question - Where does Johnny want his mom 00:11:53.31\00:11:57.01 to be at that moment? Laughter! 00:11:57.05\00:11:59.75 In the North Pole or if possible, on the moon, 00:11:59.78\00:12:03.35 isn't it? Probably one of those. 00:12:03.39\00:12:05.09 That's what sin does to us. 00:12:05.12\00:12:08.39 Sin creates separation and that's why God never 00:12:08.42\00:12:14.23 intended that door to be opened. 00:12:14.26\00:12:18.00 It was not that God didn't want to give us something 00:12:18.03\00:12:21.50 special and so forth, God never intended that 00:12:21.54\00:12:25.77 door of pain; of suffering; of pollution; of death; 00:12:25.81\00:12:31.38 of sickness to be opened. 00:12:31.41\00:12:34.28 That's why we need to be very careful on the decisions 00:12:34.32\00:12:38.12 that we take because our choices do have consequences. 00:12:38.15\00:12:43.19 They do. Good or bad. 00:12:43.22\00:12:46.09 In the same way, you don't want to base your life 00:12:46.13\00:12:52.23 on bad decisions because - as I tell my patients, sooner 00:12:52.27\00:12:56.84 or later, the bill will come to you and especially 00:12:56.87\00:13:01.51 sometimes young people they feel indestructible and 00:13:01.54\00:13:05.88 their behavior and practices may testify of that, 00:13:05.91\00:13:09.62 but I can tell you, sooner or later the bill comes. 00:13:09.65\00:13:12.65 I'm surprised to see sometimes people that are my age, 00:13:12.69\00:13:16.73 my friends, some of them so sick taking all kinds of 00:13:16.76\00:13:20.96 medications and feeling tired and so forth - there is 00:13:21.00\00:13:24.87 no need for that. 00:13:24.90\00:13:26.74 You look remarkable for your age and I think it's alright to say 00:13:26.77\00:13:31.07 you're 43 but you look absolutely amazing, 00:13:31.11\00:13:34.08 and that is a credit to your lifestyle and to 00:13:34.11\00:13:37.15 all the good choices that you have made. 00:13:37.18\00:13:38.55 As I tell my patients, "I don't want to be a hypocrite." 00:13:38.58\00:13:41.22 If I'm telling you to do sometime, it is because I am 00:13:41.25\00:13:45.32 doing that thing in my life. 00:13:45.35\00:13:47.66 So when sin gets introduced in the picture, spiritually we know 00:13:47.69\00:13:51.83 we separated ourselves from God; physically, disease 00:13:51.86\00:13:55.70 came on; emotionally, stress and anxiety, 00:13:55.73\00:14:00.84 and relationship problems came on. 00:14:00.87\00:14:03.27 The relationship fell down as soon as it happened, didn't it? 00:14:03.30\00:14:06.68 They started blaming each other, it's like, "Oh, not me, 00:14:06.71\00:14:08.94 it's not my fault, it's their fault." 00:14:08.98\00:14:10.85 And that was an immediate thing, so yes, it does 00:14:10.88\00:14:14.32 and all of those things are affected - the relationships 00:14:14.35\00:14:18.85 and our physical health, our mental health and, of course, 00:14:18.89\00:14:21.92 just like, you know, Johnny didn't want his mom 00:14:21.96\00:14:24.83 to be there, they hid from God. That's right! 00:14:24.86\00:14:26.86 So all of those aspects of our being impact in one event 00:14:26.90\00:14:32.07 they're all mixed in together and we can't do one 00:14:32.10\00:14:35.74 and not have them all affected for good, as you said 00:14:35.77\00:14:38.37 or negatively. 00:14:38.41\00:14:40.08 So our goal should be to try to understand what type of 00:14:40.11\00:14:44.61 lifestyle was taking place at the very beginning and try 00:14:44.65\00:14:49.35 to pattern our lifestyle as much as possible 00:14:49.38\00:14:53.09 on that - regarding diet; regarding exercise; 00:14:53.12\00:14:56.93 regarding rest; regarding relationships and so forth. 00:14:56.96\00:15:01.06 There are blessings in that! 00:15:01.10\00:15:02.63 That's what I like about the Bible - as you read its 00:15:02.66\00:15:06.50 pages, there are good examples and bad examples. 00:15:06.53\00:15:11.01 The bad examples are there so that you can avoid falling 00:15:11.04\00:15:14.08 in the same pits that certain people fell, 00:15:14.11\00:15:17.38 and there are good examples. 00:15:17.41\00:15:18.75 For example, in Genesis, we see the negative consequences 00:15:18.78\00:15:24.62 of uncontrolled anger resulting in the death 00:15:24.65\00:15:29.12 of the first human being. 00:15:29.16\00:15:31.33 Also, Psalms talks about what happens with uncontrolled 00:15:31.36\00:15:36.00 passion - how relationships were affected in the case of 00:15:36.03\00:15:40.64 David and pain and even death resulted as a result of that. 00:15:40.67\00:15:47.44 So bad consequences... 00:15:47.48\00:15:50.01 But you're talking about when he saw Uriah's wife, 00:15:50.05\00:15:53.01 you know, he committed adultery and then she got pregnant, 00:15:53.05\00:15:56.99 and he tried to hide it and couldn't, so he had the husband 00:15:57.02\00:15:59.99 killed (That's right!) and then, of course, it all came back 00:16:00.02\00:16:05.53 against him and it was a very bad experience. 00:16:05.56\00:16:09.13 Or Judas - you know, uncontrolled greed took him 00:16:09.16\00:16:13.64 to the point that he actually traded Jesus 00:16:13.67\00:16:16.40 for just some pieces of metal called "silver," you know. 00:16:16.44\00:16:20.51 But also the Bible also has examples of people 00:16:20.54\00:16:25.68 that even had pathological families in the example of 00:16:25.71\00:16:29.15 Joseph, you know, a very pathological family, 00:16:29.18\00:16:33.46 yet the choices that he took sooner or later they gave 00:16:33.49\00:16:38.59 good consequences and you can see that he became one of the 00:16:38.63\00:16:43.26 highest officials in Egypt or Daniel, you know, he purposes 00:16:43.30\00:16:49.17 in his heart that he would not defile himself with the wine 00:16:49.20\00:16:54.48 or the food of those Babylonians and God blessed them. 00:16:54.51\00:16:59.65 I think that's the absolute key, he purposed in his heart 00:16:59.68\00:17:03.89 and he made that decision that choice before he was ever 00:17:03.92\00:17:07.26 confronted with the temptation. 00:17:07.29\00:17:09.42 And I think that's a big secret, if you wait until 00:17:09.46\00:17:11.99 the cookies come out or whatever it is, whatever it is, 00:17:12.03\00:17:16.13 it's very difficult but if ahead of time you think, " this is 00:17:16.16\00:17:20.04 what I am going to do; this is what I'm not 00:17:20.07\00:17:22.50 going to do," and that's your line in the sand - in your mind, 00:17:22.54\00:17:25.94 and you just draw that line. That's right! 00:17:25.97\00:17:27.61 And I believe that's the secret, whatever it is... 00:17:27.64\00:17:30.65 So remember, all change starts with good decisions. 00:17:31.05\00:17:35.52 Now some people will say, "Well it's because I have bad 00:17:35.55\00:17:38.25 genetics, doctor, you don't understand this." 00:17:38.29\00:17:40.19 "My father died of heart disease; mother died of cancer; 00:17:40.22\00:17:43.76 there's a lot of disease in my family." 00:17:43.79\00:17:45.93 Well, we're realizing that genes actually account only for 00:17:45.96\00:17:50.03 20% of your health. 00:17:50.07\00:17:53.47 You know there's a study that took place actually not too far 00:17:53.50\00:17:56.20 from where I'm currently living, it's called, 00:17:56.24\00:17:59.11 "Alameda Longevity Study," and we can see that on the screen. 00:17:59.14\00:18:04.78 They found out that people that follow these habits - you 00:18:04.81\00:18:10.02 actually predicted their longevity: 00:18:10.05\00:18:12.72 And let me share with you a very interesting graphic. 00:18:24.93\00:18:28.30 That graphic tells you how you can actually 00:18:28.34\00:18:31.57 predict that longevity. 00:18:31.61\00:18:33.94 In this graphic, for example, you can see that a 20-year-old 00:18:33.98\00:18:38.35 that has zero to 2 habits, (you see it on the red), 00:18:38.38\00:18:42.88 he is not 20, he is actually 34 and if you notice, 00:18:42.92\00:18:46.35 the older you get, the more the implications. 00:18:46.39\00:18:49.42 Somebody that is 70 years old that has 5 habits, 00:18:49.46\00:18:54.16 he is going to have about 71, but if he has the 7 habits 00:18:54.20\00:18:58.80 that I've just mentioned, he's actually going to be 00:18:58.83\00:19:01.77 52 years old in real age. 00:19:01.80\00:19:05.74 Compared to someone who doesn't have any,...7, 00:19:05.77\00:19:09.71 that's a 45 year differential. 00:19:09.74\00:19:12.51 That is a huge effect! A massive difference. 00:19:12.55\00:19:16.58 And the older you get, the bigger the effect that 00:19:16.62\00:19:19.79 it has for good or for bad. 00:19:19.82\00:19:21.42 And this is just in you quality of life. 00:19:21.46\00:19:24.09 And really, that becomes so important, and unfortunately, 00:19:24.13\00:19:27.96 Eddie, sometimes we have to lose some measure of our wellness 00:19:29.16\00:19:32.60 before we really appreciate quality of life, so that's huge. 00:19:32.63\00:19:36.94 I mean a 45 differential is terrible. 00:19:36.97\00:19:38.94 I know what some people may be thinking right now. 00:19:38.97\00:19:41.84 They may be saying, "You know doctor, what were those 00:19:41.88\00:19:44.65 7 habits - I didn't copy them." 00:19:44.68\00:19:46.21 So let's show them on the screen, those 7 habits again: 00:19:46.25\00:19:50.89 They are actually very common sense when you think about it, 00:20:04.00\00:20:06.94 but not all that common. 00:20:06.97\00:20:08.97 So "National Geographic" was interested in finding out 00:20:10.14\00:20:14.61 where the longest living people on earth were. 00:20:14.64\00:20:18.71 And, in fact, you can actually Google that article for free. 00:20:18.75\00:20:21.38 That's actually a nice, little, short video that I 00:20:21.42\00:20:23.39 recommend you watch. 00:20:23.45\00:20:24.79 If you type in your Google, "Living Longer National 00:20:24.82\00:20:29.92 Geographic," it will bring you to that online version 00:20:29.96\00:20:34.60 of the article - "Living Longer National Geographic." 00:20:34.63\00:20:39.40 And there, it talks about three cultures of longevity; 00:20:39.43\00:20:43.84 in Japan - in Okinawa, Japan; also in Italy - way in the 00:20:43.87\00:20:50.78 mountains - not the whole island but there's a small population 00:20:50.81\00:20:54.85 there in the island of Sardinia; and finally they were surprised 00:20:54.88\00:20:59.59 that in America, in the Western world, in the east of 00:20:59.62\00:21:05.06 Los Angeles, there's a small community there of 00:21:05.09\00:21:08.96 "Seventh-day Adventists" in Loma Linda, California. 00:21:09.00\00:21:13.03 You can go to the "National Geographic" page, 00:21:13.07\00:21:14.70 I'm not making this up and Dan Buettner, the author 00:21:14.74\00:21:20.14 of this research, he wrote a whole book called, 00:21:20.18\00:21:24.51 "The Blue Zones." 00:21:24.55\00:21:26.31 And the interesting, fascinating thing about those 00:21:26.35\00:21:29.22 "Seventh-day Adventists" that live in Loma Linda, 00:21:29.25\00:21:31.85 I do lots of research and actually met a researcher of 00:21:31.89\00:21:36.49 the environment in America and he told me that Loma Linda 00:21:36.52\00:21:40.96 is one of the most polluted places in America, 00:21:41.00\00:21:44.63 the reason being is that Los Angeles is close to the ocean, 00:21:44.67\00:21:49.27 and as the winds push all that smoke, Loma Linda is surrounded 00:21:49.30\00:21:54.44 by mountains, so all that smoke stays in Loma Linda. 00:21:54.48\00:21:58.98 You have one of the most polluted places in America 00:21:59.01\00:22:02.72 yet you have one of the longest living people in America. 00:22:02.75\00:22:08.09 So universities and governments around the world 00:22:08.12\00:22:13.19 wanted to know what are they doing that is causing 00:22:13.23\00:22:17.57 that amazing longevity. 00:22:17.60\00:22:19.57 And you know, today there's more than 50 years of 00:22:19.60\00:22:23.10 research, and you can actually find this - it's called, 00:22:23.14\00:22:25.77 "Adventist Health Studies." 00:22:25.81\00:22:27.94 And they have found out that there is, nowadays, in the 00:22:27.98\00:22:32.55 database, more than 100,000 people that have 00:22:32.58\00:22:36.38 been studied and this is what they found out. 00:22:36.42\00:22:39.55 They found out that these "Seventh-day Adventists" 00:22:39.59\00:22:43.86 live 10 years or more than the average American. 00:22:43.89\00:22:48.90 The ones that also live in the 00:22:48.93\00:22:50.83 area, yes. That's right, that's right! 00:22:50.87\00:22:52.63 You know they are not isolated from all of the 00:22:52.70\00:22:55.34 temptations, all the availability of other choices. 00:22:55.37\00:22:58.84 So it's a choice that they make. 00:22:58.87\00:23:01.08 Yes and as my professor said when I was studying medicine, 00:23:01.11\00:23:03.45 going to an American market can be harmful to your health. 00:23:03.48\00:23:07.25 You have all kinds of access there - sugars and white flour, 00:23:07.28\00:23:12.72 whatever you want is there in those markets. 00:23:12.75\00:23:15.76 So yes, you know, they are exposed to those types 00:23:15.79\00:23:19.13 of temptations. 00:23:19.16\00:23:20.76 And you know, back in the 60s, they did a study, 00:23:20.80\00:23:23.73 one of the first Adventist mortality studies and they 00:23:23.77\00:23:30.54 found out that males were living 6.2 years more 00:23:30.57\00:23:35.24 than the average American. 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.28 But then, the latest, latest study and, in fact, 00:23:37.31\00:23:41.35 if you are somebody that watches the news or reads the newspaper, 00:23:41.38\00:23:45.69 you have seen the results of these studies. 00:23:45.72\00:23:48.16 CNN, Fox News, NBC, Australian Outlets and newspapers 00:23:48.19\00:23:54.66 and all over the world have reported the amazing 00:23:54.70\00:23:59.00 results of these studies. 00:23:59.03\00:24:00.50 So let's go through some of the fascinating facts that 00:24:00.54\00:24:04.11 these studies have shed on the lifestyle of these Adventists. 00:24:04.14\00:24:10.01 We can see, for example, that mortality in all cancers 00:24:10.05\00:24:13.42 among males is 60% LESS, you know, compared to the 00:24:13.45\00:24:17.49 average population. Fantastic! 00:24:17.52\00:24:19.05 Mortality on all cancers among females 76% less. 00:24:19.09\00:24:24.83 Also, they found the importance of eating whole grains. 00:24:24.86\00:24:30.63 Eating whole grains decreased the risk of a fatal heart attack 00:24:30.67\00:24:34.94 in 45%. 00:24:34.97\00:24:37.64 That's a huge reduction! 00:24:37.67\00:24:39.81 That is fabulous! 00:24:39.84\00:24:41.34 It's almost half, isn't it? 00:24:41.38\00:24:42.84 And also drinking water has an effect. 00:24:42.88\00:24:46.55 Five or more glasses of water reduced the risk of 00:24:46.58\00:24:51.02 a heart attack by 50%. 00:24:51.05\00:24:53.56 What a simple product, I mean. That's right! Water! 00:24:54.42\00:24:57.63 And it's just so valuable. 00:24:57.66\00:24:59.29 And then tomatoes - the males that ate the most tomatoes 00:24:59.33\00:25:04.17 reduced their risk of prostate cancer by 40%. 00:25:04.20\00:25:08.24 And if you replace your dairy for soymilk, 00:25:08.27\00:25:11.87 among males, you reduce the risk of prostate cancer 00:25:11.91\00:25:15.84 by 70% - a cancer that is extremely common here 00:25:15.88\00:25:21.72 in Australia, unfortunately. Yes, very common. 00:25:21.75\00:25:24.25 And you know, if you analyze this group of people, 00:25:24.29\00:25:29.16 they're not just one race - you know, you cannot just say 00:25:29.19\00:25:32.79 "Oh it's just white," no there are Hispanics, there is Asian, 00:25:32.83\00:25:36.93 there is African - all kinds of people composed the 00:25:36.97\00:25:41.00 Seventh-day Adventists. 00:25:41.04\00:25:43.07 And not all the Seventh-day Adventists grew in the same way. 00:25:43.10\00:25:47.81 There are some that didn't grow as Adventists 00:25:47.84\00:25:50.78 and later on chose to become an Adventist and if you eliminate 00:25:50.81\00:25:55.32 those people that were eating lots of cheese, lots of dairy, 00:25:55.35\00:25:59.99 lots of meat that in the past, they partook of lots of 00:26:00.02\00:26:03.76 alcohol or drugs - that actually the longevity goes 00:26:03.79\00:26:07.66 to 10, 12 or even more years compared 00:26:07.70\00:26:10.50 to the average American. 00:26:10.53\00:26:12.37 So what are they doing, these Adventists? 00:26:12.40\00:26:14.94 They're not smoking; they follow a plant-based diet; 00:26:14.97\00:26:18.37 they consume nuts; they do regular exercise, 00:26:18.41\00:26:22.61 and they keep a healthy weight. 00:26:22.64\00:26:24.91 And one very important factor, they found out, 00:26:24.95\00:26:28.58 is that the way that the faith they live - having faith in God 00:26:28.62\00:26:36.16 as they crunched the numbers, they realized that is 00:26:36.19\00:26:39.16 actually a huge factor in longevity. 00:26:39.19\00:26:42.40 Yes and that doesn't surprise me at all because 00:26:42.43\00:26:44.63 in the last 100 years there's been - oh, I think it's about 00:26:44.67\00:26:48.50 1,200 studies that show the beneficial effects 00:26:48.54\00:26:52.31 to our physical health from spirituality - you're probably 00:26:52.34\00:26:56.31 aware of all that too, I'm sure with all the 00:26:56.34\00:26:58.18 research that you do - yes, it has a really amazing impact 00:26:58.21\00:27:02.08 on our overall health - tapping into spirituality. 00:27:02.12\00:27:05.19 So if you want to have that longevity, I invite you to 00:27:05.22\00:27:09.92 tap into those spiritual resources. 00:27:09.96\00:27:12.49 In fact, in "National Geographic," one of the 00:27:12.53\00:27:16.60 characteristics of those three groups is that they 00:27:16.63\00:27:20.04 had faith in God which is fascinating, isn't it? 00:27:20.07\00:27:23.57 Yes it is actually because they weren't all identical 00:27:23.61\00:27:26.98 like the factors that helped each of the groups 00:27:27.01\00:27:29.34 weren't entirely identical, but that was one 00:27:29.38\00:27:31.88 that was a common one that they all had. 00:27:31.91\00:27:35.52 I'd like to teach a Bible verse for those patients that 00:27:35.55\00:27:38.79 would like to overcome a certain habit - I teach them: 00:27:38.82\00:27:41.96 Philippians 4:13 which says, "I can do all things 00:27:41.99\00:27:46.90 through Christ who strengthens me." 00:27:46.93\00:27:49.66 So focus on a few things, start making those changes, 00:27:49.70\00:27:53.67 decide for the change and harvest the good results! 00:27:53.70\00:27:57.24 That's tremendous and, you know, the Bible - actually 00:27:57.27\00:28:00.64 the same creative power that brought this world 00:28:00.68\00:28:03.65 into existence is in actually in God's Words, 00:28:03.68\00:28:05.85 so it's really, really powerful. 00:28:05.88\00:28:08.15 So we wish you a very long and healthy life! 00:28:08.18\00:28:11.75 And remember that you can view our programs on demand, 00:28:11.79\00:28:15.26 just visit our website at 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:15.29\00:28:20.26 and click on the watch button. 00:28:20.30\00:28:21.73 And we just hope that this has been a really helpful 00:28:21.76\00:28:24.40 thing for you and I hope that you take onboard 00:28:24.43\00:28:27.17 something that you heard and even think of one thing 00:28:27.20\00:28:29.67 that you could do right now to give yourself 00:28:29.70\00:28:33.11 a long and healthy life. 00:28:33.14\00:28:35.04
