Welcome to "Healthy Living!" 00:00:14.84\00:00:16.38 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:16.41\00:00:18.68 Today's topic is cancer, is there hope? 00:00:18.71\00:00:22.12 Even if it's stage IV (4) cancer? 00:00:22.15\00:00:24.72 Stay tuned as we discuss powerful foods that 00:00:24.75\00:00:27.46 can help you fight back. 00:00:27.49\00:00:29.12 With me in the studio today is health psychologist, 00:01:04.29\00:01:08.66 Jenifer Skues and Dr. John Clark. 00:01:08.70\00:01:11.63 Welcome Jenifer, welcome John and really 00:01:11.67\00:01:14.04 lovely to have you on the program and this is a 00:01:14.07\00:01:16.34 very, very sensitive subject. 00:01:16.37\00:01:18.77 This disease of cancer is one that I think it strikes 00:01:20.11\00:01:23.41 fear into us possibly more than any other. 00:01:23.45\00:01:25.68 And so this topic we really, really are looking forward 00:01:25.71\00:01:29.68 to what you have to say because we need to know 00:01:29.72\00:01:33.62 how to fight back when this thing comes. 00:01:33.66\00:01:35.32 So John, would you like to just talk to us 00:01:35.36\00:01:37.66 a little bit about that? 00:01:37.69\00:01:39.03 Yes, Bob, a friend of mine, was having trouble with 00:01:39.06\00:01:43.50 his bowels - they weren't working right. 00:01:43.53\00:01:46.03 He was like having symptoms that were a problem, 00:01:46.07\00:01:51.14 and we were sure that he was, 00:01:51.17\00:01:53.78 you know, going to be in trouble. 00:01:53.81\00:01:55.14 He went to the hospital, got some tests done, 00:01:55.18\00:01:57.35 and low and behold, he had colon cancer! 00:01:57.38\00:02:00.08 Well he didn't know what he should do and the hospital 00:02:00.12\00:02:04.52 ran him through the usual ropes of chemotherapy 00:02:04.55\00:02:07.16 and radiation and surgery. 00:02:07.19\00:02:10.26 And then they sent him home and said, "Okay, you're fixed!" 00:02:10.29\00:02:14.80 But in four months, things weren't going right again; 00:02:15.30\00:02:18.07 he went back to the hospital and the surgeon looked at him 00:02:18.10\00:02:23.04 and said, "Well you probably have some blockages because 00:02:23.07\00:02:27.04 chemotherapy makes strictures in your colon, 00:02:27.08\00:02:29.38 and we're going to have to go back in, 00:02:29.41\00:02:30.75 so let's take you back to surgery." 00:02:30.78\00:02:32.85 Took him back to surgery, opened him up 00:02:32.88\00:02:35.52 and he was totally full of cancer! Ooo! 00:02:35.55\00:02:40.02 They closed him up and said, "There's nothing more 00:02:40.06\00:02:42.62 we can do - we'll just send you home." 00:02:42.66\00:02:45.19 And then the surgeon said a funny thing... 00:02:45.23\00:02:46.90 He says, "Well if I was you, I'd probably at this point, 00:02:46.93\00:02:49.53 find somebody that would do something natural for you." 00:02:49.56\00:02:52.83 Well Bob was a bit taken back, "Well what do you mean, 00:02:52.87\00:02:56.81 what are you saying?" 00:02:56.84\00:02:58.77 "Well I'd find somebody that might do this, you know, 00:02:58.81\00:03:01.88 take a natural approach to this." 00:03:01.91\00:03:03.71 He said, "Well where would I go to find this." 00:03:03.75\00:03:05.25 He said, "I don't know but just, you know, look 00:03:05.28\00:03:06.85 around, you'll probably find something." 00:03:06.88\00:03:09.55 So he did and went on life's mission to find somebody 00:03:09.58\00:03:12.02 that would take a natural approach, nutritional approach 00:03:12.05\00:03:15.09 and he found somebody! 00:03:15.12\00:03:17.26 And so he went to this place and they gave him all 00:03:17.29\00:03:20.70 fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. 00:03:20.73\00:03:23.10 They put him on some cleansing programs; 00:03:23.13\00:03:26.47 they gave him some herbs, his cancer went away! 00:03:26.50\00:03:30.01 Can we make that "herbs," we're in Australia now John. 00:03:30.04\00:03:32.37 Laughter... That's fine, I was just joking! 00:03:32.41\00:03:37.48 In America, "Herb" is the name of a guy! Laughter. 00:03:37.51\00:03:42.05 We have them too. 00:03:42.08\00:03:44.19 And so I gave him some herbs and his cancer went away. 00:03:44.22\00:03:49.46 And so he went back home, he thought, "Well, how can I 00:03:49.99\00:03:52.89 keep this to myself?" 00:03:52.93\00:03:54.53 He added 5 more bedrooms onto his house and started 00:03:54.56\00:03:58.00 bringing people in and he'd teach them how to 00:03:58.03\00:04:01.74 fix food - they'd all go to the kitchen. 00:04:01.77\00:04:03.54 He had a big kitchen with a big counter space, 00:04:03.57\00:04:06.17 and a place for everybody to 00:04:06.21\00:04:07.64 prepare their fruits and vegetables. 00:04:07.68\00:04:09.68 He taught them how to do herbs. 00:04:09.71\00:04:11.58 He started his own herb distribution company basically. 00:04:11.61\00:04:16.48 And he had them doing cleanses 00:04:16.52\00:04:19.49 and so he shared what he had learned. 00:04:19.52\00:04:22.32 That's incredible! 00:04:22.36\00:04:23.69 He'd basically been sent home to die... (Absolutely) 00:04:23.73\00:04:26.49 Because they said, "There's nothing that we can do." 00:04:26.53\00:04:28.96 And yet he was able to turn that around. 00:04:29.00\00:04:32.80 And you would, you'd feel like telling other people 00:04:32.83\00:04:35.20 and helping other people when you'd just come back 00:04:35.24\00:04:37.77 basically from the brink of the grave, wouldn't you? Yes! 00:04:37.81\00:04:41.44 And what a lovely thing that he did to do that and just 00:04:41.48\00:04:44.81 not keep it all to himself. 00:04:44.85\00:04:46.72 It's very sad that many people do die at that point 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.45 because they don't believe there's anything else 00:04:49.48\00:04:52.15 that can be done, yeah, and we're just showing here 00:04:52.19\00:04:55.72 that it's never too late and I think that's important 00:04:55.76\00:04:59.29 for people never to give up and to look beyond what may be 00:04:59.33\00:05:02.76 more conventional treatments which can help 00:05:02.80\00:05:05.03 some and if it doesn't, then there is a way, 00:05:05.07\00:05:07.37 and this is a good example of that! 00:05:07.40\00:05:09.44 And I might just say, prior to coming to Australia, 00:05:09.47\00:05:13.71 I was working at a health facility where we took in 00:05:13.74\00:05:17.38 cancer patients. 00:05:17.41\00:05:18.75 The large majority of our patients were cancer, 00:05:18.78\00:05:20.98 and we would see them turn around. 00:05:21.02\00:05:23.42 A lot of them had the same story - totally given up on 00:05:23.45\00:05:28.39 by the general system, fourth stage. 00:05:28.42\00:05:30.83 I remember one gentleman, he called me up. 00:05:30.86\00:05:33.56 He said, the hospital said, "You're going to home and die." 00:05:33.60\00:05:37.17 He went to another natural place, they said, "There's 00:05:37.20\00:05:40.64 nothing we can do, you're going to go home and die." 00:05:40.67\00:05:43.20 He said, "But the Lord has showed me that this 00:05:43.24\00:05:45.57 cancer is not unto death." 00:05:45.61\00:05:48.51 He says, "Can I come to your facility?" 00:05:48.54\00:05:50.45 I said, "Well I can't tell ya if you're going to die or not, 00:05:50.48\00:05:53.62 I don't know how they can tell you that, but I can tell you 00:05:53.65\00:05:56.35 we'll do our best for you physically, mentally and 00:05:56.38\00:05:58.99 spiritually and put you in the best position to 00:05:59.02\00:06:01.22 present yourself to God for healing." 00:06:01.26\00:06:03.19 And so he came, he had prostate cancer that had grown up 00:06:03.22\00:06:08.60 through the bladder and was going into his intestine. 00:06:08.63\00:06:10.90 Wow, that's huge! 00:06:10.93\00:06:12.27 When he came, he couldn't get out of bed hardly. 00:06:12.30\00:06:15.47 We thought, "Okay, he's just going to lay in bed and die, 00:06:15.50\00:06:17.44 but he started in on the program, lots of interesting 00:06:17.47\00:06:22.71 therapies going on and by the end of the 18-day program, 00:06:22.74\00:06:25.81 he was walking 1-1/2 miles; he was feeling a lot better 00:06:25.85\00:06:29.45 and 3 months later, some of our therapists went up to where 00:06:29.48\00:06:33.82 he went to church and found him in church and talked 00:06:33.86\00:06:37.59 with him and he was you know, "supposed to die!" 00:06:37.63\00:06:40.43 That's really, really encouraging! 00:06:41.26\00:06:43.26 I was driving along the road one day and in front of me 00:06:43.30\00:06:47.20 was a bus and on the back of the bus, you know they have 00:06:47.24\00:06:49.40 signs and different things that you read on the back 00:06:49.44\00:06:52.11 of the bus and it said, "Cancer is a word, not a sentence." 00:06:52.14\00:06:57.38 And I thought that was interesting - in other words, 00:06:57.41\00:06:59.58 not a death sentence, so-to-speak, and I thought 00:06:59.61\00:07:02.32 that was really good and there are things that can be done. 00:07:02.35\00:07:05.22 You can't be sure that every person 00:07:05.25\00:07:07.36 might not have left it a little bit too long, 00:07:07.39\00:07:08.99 but certainly there are many, many stories of people 00:07:09.02\00:07:12.63 who can actually recover, so tell us about the foods 00:07:12.66\00:07:17.53 that can help to fight back from cancer. 00:07:17.57\00:07:20.30 What are the foods that are those powerful foods 00:07:20.34\00:07:23.44 we promised we would talk about? 00:07:23.47\00:07:24.94 You know, when you come down with a disease, 00:07:24.97\00:07:28.34 many people think that, you know, "I was the unlucky one; 00:07:28.38\00:07:32.05 I was just sitting here and it landed on me," 00:07:32.08\00:07:35.08 and in reality, we've been doing things that have 00:07:35.12\00:07:37.89 set us up for this. 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.59 And one of the biggest problems with cancer is that it is 00:07:39.62\00:07:43.22 often an infectious disease; a virus, bacteria, some other 00:07:43.26\00:07:49.56 thing that came in and actually gave you a disease. 00:07:49.60\00:07:52.73 And modern medicine has sort of sold us on the idea 00:07:52.77\00:07:56.40 of "the germ theory," which says that, "I was me, 00:07:56.44\00:08:00.28 I was like everybody else and along came this really bad 00:08:00.31\00:08:03.14 bug and look at me now, I'm a victim!" 00:08:03.18\00:08:06.78 Well, it's better to look at it a little differently 00:08:06.82\00:08:10.49 and that is like this - it's like looking at the bugs as 00:08:10.52\00:08:13.59 vultures and do vultures eat live animals? No! 00:08:13.62\00:08:16.52 They come out and clean up what's already dying, 00:08:16.56\00:08:18.53 and you made yourself susceptible to whatever disease 00:08:18.56\00:08:21.73 by being a target by being the weak one; 00:08:21.76\00:08:24.80 by not being healthy, by not having a good immune system. 00:08:24.83\00:08:27.80 So you want to eat foods that maintain a strong immune system. 00:08:27.84\00:08:31.51 Everyone of us has cancer cells. 00:08:31.54\00:08:33.64 When they collect and get to where they reach a certain 00:08:33.68\00:08:36.48 number, the doctor says, "Look, there's a pile of them, 00:08:36.51\00:08:38.51 it's a tumor, you have cancer." 00:08:38.55\00:08:40.28 But if your immune system is working well, you'll be 00:08:40.32\00:08:43.42 shuffling those growing bad cells off to the 00:08:43.45\00:08:47.62 waste basket and you won't get cancer. 00:08:47.66\00:08:49.52 That happens if you're eating a diet that is nutritionally 00:08:49.56\00:08:53.56 dense especially with fresh fruits and vegetables, 00:08:53.60\00:08:57.10 nuts and seeds. 00:08:57.13\00:08:58.47 And so for cancer, we think of things that are in 00:08:58.50\00:09:00.97 antioxidants - blueberries, red beans, all kinds of 00:09:01.00\00:09:06.34 different green leafy vegetables especially some 00:09:06.37\00:09:10.21 of your root vegetables like beets! 00:09:10.25\00:09:12.28 Raw beets are great! 00:09:12.31\00:09:13.68 Cabbage - you think of all the family of cabbage foods, 00:09:13.72\00:09:17.15 good at fighting cancer. 00:09:17.19\00:09:18.99 You look at all the different types of sprouts - high in 00:09:19.02\00:09:23.43 antioxidants, high in nutrition. 00:09:23.46\00:09:26.19 Actually I was really surprised, you mentioned the red beans. 00:09:26.23\00:09:30.07 I was very surprised to notice that they are high on the list 00:09:30.10\00:09:34.24 of antioxidant foods - they usually come in a dried form, 00:09:34.27\00:09:37.61 and I've only ever, until I read that recently actually, 00:09:37.64\00:09:41.61 I've only ever thought of antioxidants being in 00:09:41.64\00:09:44.31 fresh fruits and vegetables, not the dried form. 00:09:44.35\00:09:47.25 But they're very high, the legumes are very, very high 00:09:47.28\00:09:50.12 and that little red bean, the adzuki bean is very high, 00:09:50.15\00:09:54.02 so that's just an interesting thing to know, especially 00:09:54.06\00:09:57.63 because it's a really good meat alternative and, I mean, 00:09:57.66\00:10:03.37 I'd put it the other way around actually. 00:10:03.40\00:10:05.47 Meat is an alternative to what we really should be eating. 00:10:05.50\00:10:08.54 So, yeah, very interesting. Jeni, what's your... 00:10:08.57\00:10:12.04 Well I was just listening to you, John. 00:10:12.07\00:10:14.31 One of the big things that comes up is the mindset, 00:10:14.34\00:10:17.41 of that person and their attitude and what they believe, 00:10:17.45\00:10:21.42 as well as contribute - you pair that with the diet, 00:10:21.45\00:10:24.32 it's like a double whammy. 00:10:24.35\00:10:25.75 And whenever anyone goes and gets a diagnosis of cancer, 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.86 what is their first reaction? 00:10:28.89\00:10:30.59 It's usually one of fear, terror and they're going to die, 00:10:30.63\00:10:33.09 so they're immediately giving the brain - is telling the body 00:10:33.13\00:10:36.20 it's going to die and we mentioned before that every 00:10:36.23\00:10:40.10 cell of the body is impacted by every thought you have. Yes 00:10:40.14\00:10:43.54 So if we want to live, we have to start living like 00:10:43.57\00:10:46.64 we're going to live even when we have an illness of some sort. 00:10:46.68\00:10:49.78 And this is where the beliefs come into it and that's... 00:10:49.81\00:10:52.11 yeah, you mentioned a few things about people's beliefs. 00:10:52.15\00:10:55.22 "Oh this is terrible, look at me, I'm not going to survive 00:10:55.25\00:10:58.85 now and what am I going to do?" because that's the way 00:10:58.89\00:11:03.02 we've been primed with cancer. 00:11:03.06\00:11:04.86 Not everyone dies from cancer. No. 00:11:04.89\00:11:07.00 Yeah and we're hearing here, you know, if someone 00:11:07.03\00:11:10.10 can go - "Well, look here's this man in stage IV, 00:11:10.13\00:11:12.93 who didn't die, I can do this." 00:11:12.97\00:11:15.77 See, it gives people hope when they hear stories like that. 00:11:15.80\00:11:18.31 And even if (and I'm not being pessimistic at all), 00:11:18.34\00:11:22.01 but even if they didn't fully survive, it will give them 00:11:22.04\00:11:25.91 some extra good years. 00:11:25.95\00:11:27.68 So it's a tricky one to talk about, I guess. 00:11:27.72\00:11:30.49 John, cancer, as noted, can't make promises 00:11:30.52\00:11:35.09 like you said when that man came to your clinic. 00:11:35.12\00:11:38.79 You said - well you don't know, but you would 00:11:38.83\00:11:41.00 give him his best chance and that's what we need to do. 00:11:41.03\00:11:43.47 We all need to give ourselves the best chance that we can 00:11:43.50\00:11:46.53 at a good quality of life. 00:11:46.57\00:11:48.90 There are a lot of lifestyle factors that impact cancer, 00:11:48.94\00:11:51.77 and certainly stress is a huge component. Yes. 00:11:51.81\00:11:54.81 And one of the things now which is a more recent area 00:11:54.84\00:11:59.68 of research is on that they call "epigenetics." Oh yeah! 00:11:59.71\00:12:02.72 And that means that we can be predisposed to an illness. Yes. 00:12:02.75\00:12:06.82 And an illness can include things like addictions because 00:12:06.86\00:12:10.29 there is a genetic capacity to the brain to be more 00:12:10.33\00:12:13.23 addicted or not addicted. 00:12:13.26\00:12:14.60 So and they're saying now that it doesn't mean you'll get it 00:12:14.63\00:12:17.93 if you got the gene, it's treated by diet, 00:12:17.97\00:12:21.44 health and lifestyle and stress. 00:12:21.47\00:12:24.04 Stress is a huge component of that. 00:12:24.07\00:12:27.14 But sadly, people are not listening to that. 00:12:27.18\00:12:30.65 You know, I know women who've gone and had a breast removed 00:12:30.68\00:12:32.78 because their whole family or the women in the family 00:12:32.81\00:12:34.95 have had cancer. Yes, we read about that 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.05 all the time. Yes and that's very sad. 00:12:37.09\00:12:38.85 In fact, there was an actress who recently had both 00:12:38.89\00:12:42.69 breasts done in the front page of the paper and so people 00:12:42.72\00:12:45.53 think - "Oh now I can do that too." 00:12:45.56\00:12:46.90 It's a common phenomenon. 00:12:46.93\00:12:48.26 Instead of going, "Well hang on, if I watch my stress levels 00:12:48.30\00:12:51.07 and live the health principles, I won't get it because 00:12:51.10\00:12:53.97 that's what happens." 00:12:54.00\00:12:55.70 You know, if you reduce your stress, watch your diet, 00:12:55.74\00:12:58.87 dense nutrients, then the body will fight it off. 00:13:01.38\00:13:05.45 It will cure itself. 00:13:05.48\00:13:07.45 And it's interesting, going back to - I think it was around 00:13:07.48\00:13:10.65 about 2005, the U.S. surgeon general, where you're from, 00:13:10.69\00:13:16.02 he said that our health status is determined, 70% of it, 00:13:16.06\00:13:22.43 is determined by our lifestyle. Yes. 00:13:22.46\00:13:24.67 What we eat and drink, whether we smoke and exercise, 00:13:24.70\00:13:28.30 and how we love. 00:13:28.34\00:13:30.17 Interesting, we might come back to that. 00:13:30.21\00:13:31.81 That was what he said and I thought that was interesting. 00:13:31.84\00:13:34.28 So that 70% is more than all other factors put together. 00:13:34.31\00:13:39.08 He allocated 10% to genetics, 10% to medical care, 00:13:39.11\00:13:45.65 and 10% to environmental factors. 00:13:45.69\00:13:48.09 So that's very supportive of what you're really saying here, 00:13:48.12\00:13:51.86 at what both of you were saying. 00:13:51.89\00:13:53.80 And I think that is of an amazing authority, 00:13:53.83\00:13:56.63 so 70% of our whole health status is determined 00:13:56.67\00:14:00.57 by our choices and what we do about our life. 00:14:00.60\00:14:04.84 Stress is a great factor in bringing the immune system down. 00:14:04.87\00:14:10.25 And people who are stressed a lot of the time, 00:14:10.28\00:14:12.15 their immune function is very poor; hence, they get colds, 00:14:12.18\00:14:15.08 flu viruses and lots of things happening. 00:14:15.12\00:14:17.45 So that means they're more predisposed to that gene pool 00:14:17.49\00:14:20.52 activating because stress weakens the whole system. 00:14:20.56\00:14:23.89 And that's why we got you on the program Jeni because 00:14:23.93\00:14:26.23 you're talking about how what we think affects us so 00:14:26.26\00:14:31.47 powerfully - every cell of the body you've actually said 00:14:31.50\00:14:34.44 in another program and, of course, John, 00:14:34.47\00:14:36.67 you're talking about the physical things 00:14:36.71\00:14:38.31 that we can do - the exercise and the water, 00:14:38.34\00:14:40.58 and the good food choices, 00:14:40.61\00:14:43.11 and there's more, of course, and that was just interesting 00:14:43.14\00:14:46.58 in what the U.S. Surgeon General said back then about how 00:14:46.61\00:14:52.05 we love and I was actually really surprised to hear that 00:14:52.09\00:14:55.06 coming from him - I don't know why I should be, I mean 00:14:55.09\00:14:56.86 I understand it really well, I just didn't expect it 00:14:56.89\00:14:59.43 to come from him and it's just an amazing thing because 00:14:59.46\00:15:03.83 well it comes back with attitude 00:15:03.87\00:15:06.43 and having healthy relationships. 00:15:06.47\00:15:08.74 Relationships are huge because people need people, 00:15:08.77\00:15:12.77 and we know that, we all known that but... 00:15:12.81\00:15:18.81 But if the heart is healthy and the brain has a capacity 00:15:18.85\00:15:21.98 to love, when we action that we're working 00:15:22.02\00:15:24.25 a healthy connection between the heart and the brain 00:15:24.29\00:15:26.52 which is very powerful. 00:15:26.55\00:15:27.89 But relationships are huge... 00:15:27.92\00:15:29.89 It hits the heart doesn't it? 00:15:29.92\00:15:31.26 Well that's right, yes. 00:15:31.29\00:15:32.63 That's where the heart comes into it and love comes into it. 00:15:32.66\00:15:35.23 That's right. 00:15:35.26\00:15:36.60 And this whole stress issue, when I was the medical 00:15:36.63\00:15:40.30 director of the cancer program, I realized that all these cancer 00:15:40.34\00:15:44.84 patients were just on edge. 00:15:44.87\00:15:47.04 They were like very stressed. 00:15:47.08\00:15:50.51 A lot of them would probably be considered 00:15:50.55\00:15:52.55 type A personalities. Yes. 00:15:52.58\00:15:54.22 Or if you get somebody that's obese or has diabetes, 00:15:54.25\00:15:57.29 and they're like, "Oh yeah, I'd like to come to your 00:15:57.32\00:15:59.39 program and I'd like to have fun there." 00:15:59.42\00:16:01.82 The cancer patients are like, "And are we going to be 00:16:01.86\00:16:04.83 drinking carrot juice? And do we have 00:16:04.86\00:16:07.26 this kind of herb? And should we go, bla, bla, bla, bla? 00:16:07.30\00:16:09.96 You know, it's like you guys are stressed out? 00:16:10.00\00:16:12.40 You're stressing me out! 00:16:12.43\00:16:13.77 So we immediately instituted a stress recovery program. 00:16:13.80\00:16:18.47 We gave them an hour a day on stress management, 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.54 and had a one-on-one with our stress counselor. 00:16:21.58\00:16:25.35 Well I have someone I know who is border type A personality. 00:16:25.38\00:16:28.98 She's a high achiever, had family, children and her stress 00:16:29.02\00:16:33.76 levels were huge and she was diagnosed 00:16:33.79\00:16:37.36 with cancer on the eye. 00:16:37.39\00:16:39.26 And she was told that if they couldn't treat it effectively, 00:16:39.29\00:16:43.47 they could have to remove the eye and to actually 00:16:43.50\00:16:46.37 remove it was going to send her blind. 00:16:46.40\00:16:48.97 And it would eventually do both eyes, 00:16:49.00\00:16:50.74 it was the left eye initially. 00:16:50.77\00:16:52.11 And because it was in the early stages, 00:16:52.14\00:16:54.78 she said, "No, I want to... like 00:16:54.81\00:16:56.14 the other story had "I want to try and sort this." 00:16:56.18\00:16:58.61 And so she went off and she learned to relax; 00:16:58.65\00:17:03.79 she cut her workload back; she started to deal with her 00:17:03.82\00:17:07.86 temperament; she changed her diet. 00:17:07.89\00:17:10.93 She had a reasonable diet but she went for foods like 00:17:10.96\00:17:13.73 you were talking about. 00:17:13.76\00:17:15.10 One of them, I remember her telling me, "Raspberries," 00:17:15.13\00:17:17.63 so she got raspberries and had those a lot and the 00:17:17.67\00:17:22.20 black currants or the other types 00:17:22.24\00:17:25.44 of berries and that that are so powerful. 00:17:25.47\00:17:28.11 So she did whole makeover, if you want to put it that way, 00:17:28.14\00:17:31.41 where she changed her lifestyle radically and it never 00:17:31.45\00:17:35.28 progressed, it disappeared and she's never had it since. 00:17:35.32\00:17:37.95 This was probably 20 years ago. 00:17:37.99\00:17:39.92 That's just absolutely fantastic! 00:17:39.95\00:17:42.09 Now we've talked about things that these people did, 00:17:42.12\00:17:45.59 and I'm just thinking and probably people tuning in 00:17:45.63\00:17:49.26 who are thinking, "Oh that's a big ask, I'm not sure 00:17:49.30\00:17:55.17 I could do that," what would you say, John, 00:17:55.20\00:17:57.61 to people who are feeling like that's huge, 00:17:57.64\00:18:01.24 especially when they're quite sick. 00:18:01.28\00:18:02.78 What would you suggest? What would you say to them? 00:18:02.81\00:18:05.88 You want to take it a step at a time 00:18:05.91\00:18:08.35 if it's being a challenge for you and once place to start is 00:18:08.38\00:18:11.42 drinking more water. 00:18:11.45\00:18:13.15 You'd be surprised how many people are dehydrated; 00:18:13.19\00:18:16.02 therefore, they are much more concentrated and 00:18:16.06\00:18:19.86 they need to get rid of toxins. 00:18:19.89\00:18:21.96 And so you drink more water and so I tell people to drink 00:18:22.00\00:18:25.70 a liter of water when you get up in the morning; 00:18:25.73\00:18:27.57 drink a liter of water between breakfast and lunch; 00:18:27.60\00:18:30.37 and drink a liter of water a couple of hours after lunch, 00:18:30.41\00:18:33.74 and this alone is a big help. 00:18:33.78\00:18:35.78 Now that wouldn't leave much room for the other 00:18:35.81\00:18:37.85 beverages that people usually like to have. 00:18:37.88\00:18:40.82 So that could be a good thing because it would displace 00:18:40.85\00:18:43.69 some of those things. 00:18:43.72\00:18:45.59 That's right and then as far as diet goes, 00:18:45.62\00:18:48.89 if you just take and look at what you're currently 00:18:48.92\00:18:50.89 eating - hopefully you're eating some fresh fruits 00:18:50.93\00:18:53.23 and vegetables, just start increasing those proportions. 00:18:53.26\00:18:56.93 Instead of one apple, two, you know, just make it 00:18:56.97\00:19:00.54 a larger part of your meal. 00:19:00.57\00:19:02.57 So go take a journey and that's really good because 00:19:02.60\00:19:05.67 it's not all or nothing and everything that they do 00:19:05.71\00:19:08.64 in the right direction is going to help and hopefully 00:19:08.68\00:19:11.71 they can get some good social support. 00:19:11.75\00:19:14.72 Support is a really, really big thing and being loved. 00:19:14.75\00:19:20.29 Often people with cancer do get good social support 00:19:20.32\00:19:22.92 because all their friends and that rally round will help them. 00:19:22.96\00:19:28.96 But there's other kinds of support too, Jeni, 00:19:29.00\00:19:31.03 I think you mentioned it in another program 00:19:31.07\00:19:32.87 like professional support. 00:19:32.90\00:19:34.24 Yes, absolutely! And I do, I work with people who 00:19:34.27\00:19:37.17 had that diagnosis or have had it and recovering and they're 00:19:37.21\00:19:40.68 still struggling to get themselves around it. Yes. 00:19:40.71\00:19:44.05 And certainly, I think what we were talking about before 00:19:44.08\00:19:46.58 that overwhelm of looking, "I can't do this." Yes. 00:19:46.61\00:19:49.82 And people, psychologically, can cope with changing 00:19:49.85\00:19:53.42 one thing, not 20 things at once. 00:19:53.46\00:19:55.72 So that's the sort of approach I take. 00:19:55.76\00:19:57.53 Okay, well how can you start to streamline your lifestyle 00:19:57.56\00:20:00.43 and start to improve and help your immune system 00:20:00.46\00:20:03.67 and your brain function. 00:20:03.70\00:20:05.97 And water is one of them because without enough water, 00:20:06.00\00:20:08.67 the brain can shrink if it's dehydrated and it makes it 00:20:08.70\00:20:11.77 very cloudy and we can't focus. 00:20:11.81\00:20:13.91 Yes, so often people come to me and they're actually 00:20:13.94\00:20:17.35 dehydrated and they're really struggling when I'm talking 00:20:17.38\00:20:20.58 to them and I'll get them a big drink of water - the difference 00:20:20.62\00:20:23.18 is quite marked. 00:20:23.22\00:20:24.69 How fast can that happen? 00:20:24.72\00:20:26.79 A drink of water? Pretty quickly! Oh alright. 00:20:26.82\00:20:29.29 Once you put stuff in your mouth, it just translates 00:20:29.32\00:20:32.69 through everything. Oh I'm going to - thanks for 00:20:32.73\00:20:34.53 that! Better have a drink of water. Laughter. 00:20:34.56\00:20:37.93 Yes and that's really good. 00:20:37.97\00:20:40.30 I think too that it's probably a time more particularly 00:20:40.34\00:20:46.47 when people are facing a crisis of any sort... 00:20:46.51\00:20:49.08 Would be more likely to health crisis. 00:20:49.11\00:20:51.35 Yes, they are more likely to change but also I think it's a 00:20:51.38\00:20:54.28 time when people tap into spirituality and they can 00:20:54.32\00:20:58.89 do it in two ways - it might be that they turn to God 00:20:58.92\00:21:02.52 for help and they draw strength from that or they might blame 00:21:02.56\00:21:06.93 Him for their illness and turn against Him. 00:21:06.96\00:21:08.70 We see this happening in all kinds of situations 00:21:08.73\00:21:11.77 which would drive people one way or the other. 00:21:11.80\00:21:13.87 And you know, I would just really encourage you to 00:21:13.90\00:21:17.01 draw strength because God would love to do that for you, 00:21:17.04\00:21:20.84 and rather than be angry which is just going to make things 00:21:20.88\00:21:25.51 worse. My friend, she did a bit more of a spiritual focus as 00:21:25.55\00:21:29.42 well. Sorry... My friend, she did a bit more 00:21:29.45\00:21:31.92 of a spiritual focus as well. Yes, yes. 00:21:31.95\00:21:34.32 Like I said, she did the whole package, also exercise, 00:21:34.36\00:21:38.13 so she embraced all the things we're talking about. Yes. 00:21:38.16\00:21:41.20 And when you've got them all going for you... mental, 00:21:41.23\00:21:44.23 physical, spiritual, social, which is all of who we are, 00:21:44.27\00:21:48.10 that's our package. Our total package! Yes. 00:21:48.14\00:21:50.57 When you have it all going for you, it's a synergistic effect. 00:21:50.61\00:21:55.01 (it is) and it's more than the sum of the parts. 00:21:55.04\00:21:57.98 And so it's just... and we need everything going for us, 00:21:58.01\00:22:01.12 even if we're not really as sick as that, we still need 00:22:01.15\00:22:04.45 to have them all going for us, why not! Absolutely! 00:22:04.49\00:22:07.19 Why not? Why would we just coast along? 00:22:07.22\00:22:10.53 And you're sort of talking here about people 00:22:10.56\00:22:12.83 who are really getting fearful when they get the diagnosis, 00:22:12.86\00:22:16.60 and this is sort of played up. 00:22:16.63\00:22:18.53 But a lot of times, by the time they can actually 00:22:18.57\00:22:20.77 find a lump or a bump or a tumor, it's been there 00:22:20.80\00:22:24.64 a long time - it's isn't like it popped up yesterday 00:22:24.67\00:22:27.28 and you've been hit! No. 00:22:27.31\00:22:28.64 And they push you to make a decision really fast, 00:22:28.68\00:22:31.98 that's stressful in and of itself! Yes. 00:22:32.01\00:22:34.38 So just sort of step back and take it easy and don't make 00:22:34.42\00:22:38.19 fast decisions and you don't need surgery tomorrow 00:22:38.22\00:22:40.76 or chemo the next day. 00:22:40.79\00:22:42.46 You need to sort of sit back and look at your alternatives, 00:22:42.49\00:22:45.09 and think - "Now how am I gonna approach this, 00:22:45.13\00:22:48.20 and what could be wrong with my lifestyle that I 00:22:48.23\00:22:51.27 need to make changes in?" 00:22:51.30\00:22:52.63 That's when they come and see me! 00:22:52.67\00:22:54.30 That's what I help them with. 00:22:54.34\00:22:55.67 Yes, that's a wonderful combination, (it is) 00:22:55.70\00:22:58.17 the psychology and the health advice. Yes. 00:22:58.21\00:23:00.81 It needs to be married, it needs to be combined 00:23:00.84\00:23:03.71 for total health. That's right. 00:23:03.75\00:23:06.18 And what a wonderful thing that you do there. 00:23:06.21\00:23:08.98 So then, yeah, really good. 00:23:09.02\00:23:12.45 And we might think a little bit about this... 00:23:12.49\00:23:14.32 where the cancer came from. 00:23:14.36\00:23:16.32 A lot of these folks we've talked about here were using 00:23:16.36\00:23:20.46 lots of animal products. 00:23:20.50\00:23:22.66 One interesting study that really struck me was in 00:23:22.70\00:23:25.73 California - they looked at milk; they looked at what 00:23:25.77\00:23:28.37 viruses were in milk and they looked at breast cancer 00:23:28.40\00:23:31.14 and looked at what viruses were in breast cancer. 00:23:31.17\00:23:33.74 Eighty percent of those with breast cancer had a virus 00:23:33.78\00:23:36.61 found in milk and you're thinking, "Oh, it can't be!" 00:23:36.64\00:23:41.05 Well does it make any sense at all that if I am drinking 00:23:41.08\00:23:44.02 a product from a cow's breast, that I might get a breast 00:23:44.05\00:23:47.12 cancer or a breast disease? 00:23:47.16\00:23:48.56 I mean this is a no brainer! I'd never gone over it like that. 00:23:48.62\00:23:53.26 There is evidence around, you know, from studies on animals 00:23:53.29\00:23:56.16 and that we eat with cancers and growths, that can 00:23:56.20\00:23:58.53 contaminate, it can also. Oh certainly! 00:23:58.57\00:24:01.00 Yeah, there's a lot of good research now that 00:24:01.04\00:24:03.17 shows that but you don't always see it in the papers. 00:24:03.20\00:24:06.14 It's not going to be the front line news 00:24:06.17\00:24:07.81 but that's the reality, yeah. 00:24:07.84\00:24:10.41 And a lot of these animals going to market are diseased. 00:24:10.45\00:24:14.72 And very stressed. Very stressed! 00:24:14.75\00:24:17.49 And a lot of them know they're going to die and this puts 00:24:17.52\00:24:22.09 high hormones into them, stress hormones. 00:24:22.12\00:24:26.39 And then there's the whole thing of the hormones 00:24:26.43\00:24:29.33 they feed animals to make them grow. 00:24:29.36\00:24:31.70 They've discovered they can grow 20% more beef 00:24:31.73\00:24:35.30 on the same amount of feed if they give them hormones. 00:24:35.34\00:24:39.54 Those hormones come straight through to you! 00:24:39.57\00:24:42.71 And you can gain 20% more weight on the same amount 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.08 of beef but you can also grow cancer and this is a big issue. 00:24:45.11\00:24:49.92 Because a lot of these cancers almost don't grow 00:24:49.95\00:24:52.82 in the absence of hormones such as breast cancer, 00:24:52.85\00:24:55.06 prostate cancer and so forth. 00:24:55.09\00:24:57.26 And so when you look at that, you have to realize 00:24:57.29\00:25:00.06 that modern cattle are not what they were 200 years ago. 00:25:00.10\00:25:05.10 They're run on a very strict hormone program, 00:25:05.13\00:25:09.97 lots of different chemicals given to them, 00:25:10.01\00:25:12.61 and they don't get exercise, and they don't always get 00:25:12.64\00:25:14.41 water and they don't always get good food. No. 00:25:14.44\00:25:17.48 And we can go into what they feed them, 00:25:17.51\00:25:18.88 but that's a whole scary thing too. 00:25:18.91\00:25:20.25 Don't want to look at that in this program, 00:25:20.28\00:25:22.48 we'll have everyone out there stressed! 00:25:22.52\00:25:25.15 No and I remember once, as a fundraising thing for our 00:25:25.82\00:25:29.56 youth group at the church, we decided we would bag 00:25:29.59\00:25:32.23 up some manure and sell it, the kids were doing that. 00:25:32.26\00:25:37.13 And we were told to go in on a certain day, on a certain Sunday 00:25:37.17\00:25:41.17 because that's when baby chooks would be 8 weeks old, 00:25:41.20\00:25:45.51 but then 2 weeks before that, they said you're going to have 00:25:45.54\00:25:47.84 to do it this weekend because there's been disease 00:25:47.88\00:25:50.15 in the sheds and you'll have to come and get it. 00:25:50.18\00:25:53.05 So we went there - well, they had all gone to market, 00:25:53.08\00:25:56.92 all these sick fouls - the chickens had gone to market. 00:25:56.95\00:26:01.26 So we did this job - it was dreadful! 00:26:01.29\00:26:04.46 I've got to tell you, it was dreadful because the smell 00:26:04.49\00:26:06.80 was terrible - it was in an enclosed building, 00:26:06.83\00:26:09.56 a huge enclosed building. 00:26:09.60\00:26:11.37 One of the children vomited and we were all wearing masks, 00:26:11.40\00:26:14.34 it didn't help, just from the smell and that's 00:26:14.37\00:26:16.97 the only air they breathed from the time they were chicks 00:26:17.01\00:26:19.81 till they went to market and 00:26:19.84\00:26:22.44 they were walking in their own manure all that time. 00:26:22.48\00:26:26.21 Well this is why we should eat fresh foods that are grown 00:26:26.25\00:26:29.02 on trees and on the ground, and plants. 00:26:29.05\00:26:31.22 This doesn't make it more palatable. 00:26:31.25\00:26:33.59 And then when we had finished, I said to the gentleman 00:26:33.62\00:26:38.26 in charge, I said, "Now do you want us to hose this out, 00:26:38.29\00:26:42.20 or do something?" "Oh no," he said, 00:26:42.23\00:26:45.37 We had disease, you know, so we've got to treat it for that." 00:26:48.50\00:26:51.07 I said, "Oh, what was the disease?" 00:26:51.11\00:26:52.87 He said, "Salmonella." 00:26:52.91\00:26:54.34 And I was really shocked and I think it must have shown. 00:26:54.38\00:26:57.45 And he said, "Oh, don't worry, it's not one that humans get." 00:26:57.48\00:27:00.15 But they would have died if they hadn't gone to get their 00:27:00.18\00:27:02.65 heads chopped off right then, 00:27:02.68\00:27:04.15 they would have died before they got to market. 00:27:04.19\00:27:06.22 So it's a big concern when you're talking about 00:27:06.25\00:27:11.16 healthy animals - we don't know. 00:27:11.19\00:27:13.19 And I told my parents... "Don't eat any frozen chooks 00:27:13.23\00:27:19.83 for quite a while" because of what had happened. 00:27:19.87\00:27:21.57 And then I talked to a friend of mine and he said, 00:27:21.60\00:27:23.27 "It happens all the time." 00:27:23.30\00:27:25.01 He used to work with them. 00:27:25.04\00:27:26.37 Have you ever heard of somebody getting a virus 00:27:26.41\00:27:28.31 from a carrot? Laughter. Oh, no! 00:27:28.34\00:27:31.61 No actually, I haven't. 00:27:31.65\00:27:34.18 No, you don't! Well that's good news! 00:27:34.22\00:27:36.05 No, no, so that's really a big issue. 00:27:36.08\00:27:39.22 So there are a lot of factors there and, you know, 00:27:39.25\00:27:42.99 as far as getting the antioxidants from the fresh 00:27:43.02\00:27:46.16 fruit and vegetables and also then there's the viruses, 00:27:46.19\00:27:49.06 and the hormones and the stress - a lot of these things 00:27:49.10\00:27:52.03 and the support. 00:27:52.07\00:27:53.47 We need a healthy immune system. 00:27:53.50\00:27:55.00 That means we eat healthy, think healthy, look after 00:27:55.04\00:27:58.31 the body and do all the things that keep it 00:27:58.34\00:28:00.41 in good working order. Thank you! 00:28:00.44\00:28:01.94 That's all for our program today. 00:28:01.98\00:28:03.48 If you'd like a fact sheet of the program or watch 00:28:04.01\00:28:06.35 our programs on demand, just visit our website: 00:28:06.38\00:28:09.48 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:09.52\00:28:11.89 and click the watch button. 00:28:11.92\00:28:13.52 And John and Jenifer are happy to answer your questions 00:28:13.56\00:28:16.73 personally - just email them at: 00:28:16.76\00:28:19.49 healthyliving@3abnaustralia.org .au 00:28:19.53\00:28:22.96 We'll see you next time on "Healthy Living" 00:28:23.00\00:28:25.87
