Welcome to "Healthy Living" 00:00:15.48\00:00:16.98 I'm your host Margot Marshall. 00:00:17.01\00:00:18.91 Is it possible to boost your intelligence? 00:00:18.95\00:00:21.75 And can certain foods actually make us smarter? 00:00:21.78\00:00:25.39 Stay tuned for some compelling insights. 00:00:25.42\00:00:29.09 With us in the studio today we have Jennifer Skues, 00:01:03.39\00:01:06.56 a Health Psychologist, and Dr. John Clark. 00:01:06.59\00:01:09.66 Welcome Jennifer and welcome John. 00:01:09.70\00:01:11.93 Lovely to have you with us today for this subject. Thank you! 00:01:11.97\00:01:14.87 It's an interesting one. 00:01:14.90\00:01:16.27 Oh, it sure is... "Meat and intelligence." 00:01:16.30\00:01:18.41 There must be some mind of connection going on here. 00:01:18.44\00:01:21.88 Would you like to tell us about that John? 00:01:21.91\00:01:24.25 And maybe people are wondering, 00:01:24.28\00:01:25.75 "Well, which meat can I eat to get smarter?" 00:01:25.78\00:01:27.78 Right! Well, I'd like to know that. 00:01:27.82\00:01:30.05 I've often thought about this; some of the people 00:01:30.09\00:01:32.95 building their bodies will try to eat the muscles off of a cow. 00:01:32.99\00:01:37.26 Well, what would you eat in order to have a brighter brain? 00:01:37.29\00:01:39.43 The brain of a monkey? I mean it's like 00:01:39.46\00:01:42.36 we're supposed to be the highest intelligence, 00:01:42.40\00:01:44.50 so what else would you eat? Run out of food now... 00:01:44.53\00:01:48.74 I had a lady came to a seminar I was doing; 00:01:48.77\00:01:53.41 she was interested in health, but she didn't really 00:01:53.44\00:02:00.12 stay awake during all the meetings... 00:02:00.15\00:02:02.82 And, at one point, I was giving a talk on the brain, 00:02:02.85\00:02:07.02 and the health of the brain that had to do with 00:02:07.06\00:02:09.72 Daniel's diet in the Bible. 00:02:09.76\00:02:12.43 Now in the Bible, there's this gentleman by the name of 00:02:12.46\00:02:14.56 Daniel who ends up eating a very good diet, 00:02:14.60\00:02:18.30 and his academics excel. 00:02:18.33\00:02:20.84 He becomes, according to the tests, 10 times wiser 00:02:20.87\00:02:25.47 than all the other wise people in Babylon. Wow 00:02:25.51\00:02:28.61 And you might be interested to see what he wrote 00:02:28.64\00:02:30.55 because he wrote things that are still showing what's 00:02:30.58\00:02:33.28 happening today in our political scene. 00:02:33.31\00:02:35.38 It's in the book of Daniel in the Bible. 00:02:35.42\00:02:36.99 But during this presentation, I shared with them 00:02:37.02\00:02:40.76 that there were certain things that would affect your brain, 00:02:40.79\00:02:43.32 and so you wouldn't be able to think well... 00:02:43.36\00:02:46.09 And as I was talking about that, I was talking about oxygen on 00:02:46.13\00:02:49.80 the brain and she had a mindset, 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.17 "somebody of low oxygen on the brain - that's me!" 00:02:52.20\00:02:56.87 She identified. She identified with that. 00:02:56.91\00:02:59.34 So she was obviously awake at this point, 00:02:59.37\00:03:03.11 to be able to hear that. She got the message, 00:03:03.14\00:03:06.35 and so she decided, "I'm going to go on Daniel's diet." 00:03:06.38\00:03:11.45 She didn't tell me this and it was an area where I lived, 00:03:11.49\00:03:15.09 so I was around and 6 weeks later, 00:03:15.12\00:03:18.06 she came up to me and she says, "Oh Dr. Clark,", 00:03:18.09\00:03:20.40 and I said, "Oh Hi, how can I help you?" 00:03:20.43\00:03:22.00 And she said, "Well I'm not here to try and get some 00:03:22.03\00:03:23.87 help from you, I just want to tell you what's been going on." 00:03:23.90\00:03:26.67 I said, "Well tell me what's been going on!" 00:03:26.70\00:03:29.30 And she said, "Well I've had this issue where I fall asleep 00:03:29.34\00:03:34.28 during meetings and not very bright. 00:03:34.31\00:03:38.91 It's a common phenomenon when you run groups. 00:03:38.95\00:03:41.42 It sure is and she said, "I decided, 6 weeks ago, 00:03:41.45\00:03:45.62 to follow Daniel's diet, and in 6 weeks, 00:03:45.65\00:03:48.96 I've lost 30 pounds." 00:03:48.99\00:03:50.53 And as much as that's great and I want to continue that, 00:03:50.56\00:03:52.63 that isn't the real reason why I did it." 00:03:52.66\00:03:54.40 She said, "The real reason I did it was so I would stay awake." 00:03:54.43\00:03:57.80 She said, "Thank you for giving me back my brain." 00:03:57.83\00:04:01.10 "Now when you guys are up front talking, I'm wide awake, 00:04:01.14\00:04:04.24 and I learn and I get something out of it." 00:04:04.27\00:04:07.38 Aww, that's fantastic. That's really fantastic! 00:04:07.41\00:04:09.84 So, why do you think... maybe before I ask you that, 00:04:09.88\00:04:13.55 why you think what she did helped her, 00:04:13.58\00:04:17.15 maybe we'll just ask Jenny... 00:04:17.19\00:04:18.92 Jenny, can there be other things that give us brain fog, 00:04:18.95\00:04:22.39 other besides diet. 00:04:22.42\00:04:24.49 There are a lot of things that can interfere 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.30 with the functioning of the brain. 00:04:27.33\00:04:28.86 Certainly there are a lot of foods... 00:04:28.90\00:04:30.23 You know, sugar which we've 00:04:30.27\00:04:31.60 sort of talked a bit about is one; 00:04:31.63\00:04:33.80 oils is another one, but when it comes to 00:04:33.84\00:04:36.84 stress and trauma, that can certainly interfere 00:04:36.87\00:04:39.87 with brain function and actually impair our intelligence. 00:04:39.91\00:04:43.55 And, particularly people who have had a lot of trauma 00:04:43.58\00:04:46.72 at a very young age and that's even pre-2, 00:04:46.75\00:04:49.58 even conception to birth up to 2 years of age. 00:04:49.62\00:04:52.45 It can really inhibit the ability 00:04:52.49\00:04:54.72 for the brain to function. 00:04:54.76\00:04:56.46 And another one particularly for children is 00:04:56.49\00:04:58.73 if a child is told by a teacher or an adult 00:04:58.76\00:05:01.16 they don't have a brain in their head, they're stupid, 00:05:01.20\00:05:03.26 you know, they won't amount to much, they take it literally. 00:05:03.30\00:05:06.13 They will stop using their intelligence. 00:05:06.17\00:05:08.37 All right, so there are multiples. There are 00:05:08.40\00:05:09.80 a few things that impact on the brain, 00:05:09.84\00:05:11.81 and this is what we want to do in this program 00:05:11.84\00:05:14.74 as you obviously know, it's not all just about 00:05:14.78\00:05:18.21 the physical and the foods and so on than the physical. 00:05:18.25\00:05:21.78 It's multifaceted. 00:05:21.82\00:05:23.15 That's right, we are mental, physical, spiritual, social. 00:05:23.18\00:05:26.62 All of that, all blended into our being, all of who we are, 00:05:26.65\00:05:30.26 and they all have a role to play, and it's really great 00:05:30.29\00:05:33.93 to have both of you here so that we can look at it 00:05:33.96\00:05:36.26 from these different angles because 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.37 it's not just one department. 00:05:38.40\00:05:41.14 Your intelligence is the director of everything. 00:05:41.17\00:05:43.74 So how we use our intelligence is important. 00:05:43.77\00:05:46.61 It's only one-third of the brain, that prefrontal cortex, 00:05:46.64\00:05:49.54 left and right brain that is the intelligence center, 00:05:49.58\00:05:52.28 and as you know, once that is damaged beyond repair, 00:05:52.31\00:05:55.75 and you're in that vegetable state, they take you off 00:05:55.78\00:05:57.85 life support if you're on that. 00:05:57.89\00:05:59.79 So this is where, when we're talking about intelligence, 00:05:59.82\00:06:02.19 like what was happening for her, it was that part of the brain 00:06:02.22\00:06:05.76 that was shutting down or not coping. 00:06:05.79\00:06:08.30 All right, perhaps we can go back to you now, John, 00:06:08.33\00:06:11.27 and you can explain a little bit more about what it is 00:06:11.30\00:06:14.44 that she was having difficulty staying awake, 00:06:14.47\00:06:17.47 and then 6 weeks later, after changing what she ate, 00:06:17.51\00:06:20.51 she wasn't having that difficulty apart from 00:06:20.54\00:06:23.18 losing some weight... that's a good thing. 00:06:23.21\00:06:26.11 That's right and it might be nice to explain a little bit 00:06:26.15\00:06:28.65 about Daniel's diet. 00:06:28.68\00:06:30.02 This gentleman is put into Babylon rather forcefully. 00:06:30.05\00:06:34.09 He's captured and he is a prisoner. 00:06:34.12\00:06:36.29 I'd call that forceful. Forceful. 00:06:36.32\00:06:38.26 And they put him on the prison diet... 00:06:38.29\00:06:40.46 Well, it wasn't the prison diet, it was actually the king's food. 00:06:40.50\00:06:43.87 Boy, you imagine what a king would eat! 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.87 You think of kings! 00:06:45.90\00:06:47.97 It could be the best and the richest. 00:06:48.00\00:06:51.67 Oh, anything he wanted... I mean rich foods, 00:06:51.71\00:06:54.64 and particularly it was pointed out the meats that he ate 00:06:54.68\00:06:58.15 and the wine which he drank. 00:06:58.18\00:06:59.81 Well wine is another one that affects brain function 00:06:59.85\00:07:02.55 and our intelligence. 00:07:02.58\00:07:03.92 I think we probably all know that. 00:07:03.95\00:07:07.66 Anyone who has ever seen someone who had 00:07:07.69\00:07:10.73 something to drink realizes it has a very big 00:07:10.76\00:07:12.99 noticeable effect. 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.36 It impacts the conscience and the will shuts it down 00:07:14.40\00:07:16.77 so you can't make a good decision which is so important, 00:07:16.80\00:07:20.20 and that's where Daniel, he didn't drink wine 00:07:20.24\00:07:22.80 so it didn't shut his intelligence down. 00:07:22.84\00:07:25.07 He was able to make good decisions, 00:07:25.11\00:07:26.78 and as far as the meat goes, studies have shown 00:07:26.81\00:07:30.65 if somebody eats what's called biblically clean meats... 00:07:30.68\00:07:34.02 You know, if you go to Leviticus, there is a list of 00:07:34.05\00:07:35.92 meats that the Bible says are clean. 00:07:35.95\00:07:38.05 Studies show that people who eat that kind of meat 00:07:38.09\00:07:40.52 it does slow the brain down. Okay 00:07:40.56\00:07:43.66 But if they eat the meats on the list that are considered 00:07:43.69\00:07:46.23 unclean, we're talking pork is a classic one 00:07:46.26\00:07:50.10 or seafood that is not fish with fins and scales, 00:07:50.13\00:07:54.24 then it slows the brain down 7 times more than what 00:07:54.27\00:07:58.91 is considered the clean meats. 00:07:58.94\00:08:00.44 Really? That is amazing. I didn't know that. 00:08:00.48\00:08:02.41 Yeah, very interesting research and they've traced it 00:08:02.44\00:08:06.35 to arachidic acid in quinine in meat that contributes 00:08:06.38\00:08:10.19 to the poor mental performance 00:08:10.22\00:08:11.99 when somebody is eating flesh foods. 00:08:12.02\00:08:13.56 And so, are they more abundant in the foods 00:08:13.59\00:08:16.26 that you are suggesting, you know, the unclean 00:08:16.29\00:08:18.39 as they are described in the Bible. 00:08:18.43\00:08:19.79 So they've got 7 times as much, is that right...no, no, 00:08:19.83\00:08:22.70 the effect is 7 times as much, but they must have more 00:08:22.73\00:08:26.20 of those two things, is that what you're saying? 00:08:26.23\00:08:27.80 Apparently. Oh, okay. 00:08:27.84\00:08:29.40 If you have a look at meat today, it's not just 00:08:29.44\00:08:31.67 what you're talking about with that particular problem, 00:08:31.71\00:08:34.74 meat has got a lot of diseases, the way it's prepared 00:08:34.78\00:08:38.95 or the way that it's grown, like the types of farms, 00:08:38.98\00:08:44.29 like you look at chickens and that, 00:08:44.32\00:08:45.82 so it's more than just that now. 00:08:45.85\00:08:48.12 The quality of meat is lacking, even if it's a clean meat. 00:08:48.16\00:08:51.43 Yeah, that's the truth, very true, 00:08:51.46\00:08:53.93 and the hormones they give the cattle. 00:08:53.96\00:08:55.53 I was talking to a cattleman, he said, "Well, we don't want 00:08:55.56\00:08:58.63 cows all year dropping calves at any old time, 00:08:58.67\00:09:01.44 so we give them a bunch of hormones so they all 00:09:01.47\00:09:03.20 calve at the same time. 00:09:03.24\00:09:04.77 Then we give the calves hormones so they grow much faster, 00:09:04.81\00:09:08.04 and, I mean, I don't know about here in Australia, 00:09:08.08\00:09:10.81 but in America, it's all pharmaceutically-driven. 00:09:10.85\00:09:14.28 They found it impacts children's development, 00:09:14.32\00:09:16.72 particularly they are developing earlier, hormonally, 00:09:16.75\00:09:19.69 because of all the hormones in meats, you see. 00:09:19.72\00:09:21.89 So you can see, and that affects the brain then. 00:09:21.92\00:09:24.09 Oh yeah. Interesting. 00:09:24.13\00:09:26.26 In the Bible it says sometimes to do this or not do that, 00:09:26.29\00:09:30.40 and no explanation whatsoever, but we're now finding out 00:09:30.43\00:09:34.74 that science is really catching up with that, 00:09:34.77\00:09:36.74 and the reasons are just profound and it's a shame 00:09:36.77\00:09:39.71 we have to find things out the hard way, isn't it? 00:09:39.74\00:09:42.54 And not just take... Yeah, health being impacted. 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.21 Take the word of the One who actually created us, 00:09:45.25\00:09:47.85 and says, "Look, do this and don't do that." 00:09:47.88\00:09:50.25 And we think, "Aww, can't see the problem," 00:09:50.29\00:09:53.19 and then when we do, it's really quite an 00:09:53.22\00:09:54.92 unpleasant outcome often. 00:09:54.96\00:09:56.46 Like you know, the fats you were talking about the other day. 00:09:56.49\00:09:59.39 Yes, and that would be another factor here with meat is 00:09:59.43\00:10:02.30 the animal products generally have more fat, 00:10:02.33\00:10:05.63 and the fat is usually a thicker, harder fat, 00:10:05.67\00:10:08.60 often thick and hard at room temperature. 00:10:08.64\00:10:12.31 And so somebody eating more meat will have more fat 00:10:12.34\00:10:15.24 in the blood and the more fat in the blood, the less oxygen, 00:10:15.28\00:10:17.55 the less oxygen, the less ability to think and to reason. 00:10:17.58\00:10:21.48 And so, here's this lady who has switched from eating meat 00:10:21.52\00:10:25.55 and a high fat diet - to eating a diet like Daniel 00:10:25.59\00:10:28.99 which was vegetables and water is what he asked for. 00:10:29.02\00:10:33.40 And she reaps a benefit that she's like, "Thank you for 00:10:33.43\00:10:38.03 giving me my brain back." Yeah 00:10:38.07\00:10:40.64 When you say vegetables and water, it would have been 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.50 like fruits and vegetables and all the plant foods 00:10:42.54\00:10:46.01 would be brought on just vegetables, wouldn't it? 00:10:46.04\00:10:48.44 I would think so and we would say, from the rest of the Bible 00:10:48.48\00:10:52.18 that the diet that is recommended is 00:10:52.21\00:10:54.15 you would have your beans and your grains, 00:10:54.18\00:10:55.85 and your nuts and your seeds, 00:10:55.88\00:10:57.59 and your vegetables and your fruit. 00:10:57.62\00:10:58.95 And, you know, plant-based diet. That's right, beautiful! 00:10:58.99\00:11:02.79 And there's a lot of, oh, a lot of support for that 00:11:02.82\00:11:06.73 out there - a huge amount of support for plant-based diets. 00:11:06.76\00:11:10.47 It's a shame that it has taken us so long to catch up 00:11:10.50\00:11:12.87 with that ancient wisdom, isn't it? 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.94 One of the things you mentioned, John, was about oxygen, 00:11:15.97\00:11:18.77 and that's an interesting one because if we don't have 00:11:18.81\00:11:21.44 oxygen in the brain, the brain can decay, die, 00:11:21.48\00:11:25.25 the tissues will die. 00:11:25.28\00:11:26.61 But they found now that in our atmosphere, 00:11:26.65\00:11:30.52 that we actually have a lot lower oxygen. 00:11:30.55\00:11:32.72 So that means we're not breathing in as much, 00:11:32.75\00:11:34.62 and they're saying that people have about 20% less oxygen 00:11:34.66\00:11:38.19 in their system than they used to. 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.43 And that's some of the recent studies that I've heard about, 00:11:40.46\00:11:43.37 so that would contribute. 00:11:43.40\00:11:45.63 So really, when we look at diet and health, 00:11:45.67\00:11:47.40 we want foods that are going to really boost the brain, 00:11:47.44\00:11:49.67 and allow oxygen to function or put it into the cells 00:11:49.70\00:11:53.27 which is another reason when you look at that 00:11:53.31\00:11:55.18 mind-body connection, it's very powerful. 00:11:55.21\00:11:57.88 That's not a good thought to think that we've got 00:11:57.91\00:12:01.28 20% less oxygen than we used to, 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.52 so we really need to try and get out in the fresh air, 00:12:03.55\00:12:05.95 and do breathing and take foods that are going to lift us up, 00:12:05.99\00:12:09.62 and help that factor. 00:12:09.66\00:12:10.99 We probably don't know even how good we could feel. 00:12:11.03\00:12:14.16 That's right, but probably not until you do it, you realize. 00:12:14.20\00:12:17.03 Okay, or how we were yesterday to today and so on. 00:12:17.07\00:12:19.73 But we probably would be amazed to have that extra oxygen. 00:12:19.77\00:12:24.07 I had a client who, she had sleep apnea and sleep apnea 00:12:24.11\00:12:27.71 means you stop breathing at night for a period of time, 00:12:27.74\00:12:30.41 and it lowers the oxygen levels in the brain. 00:12:30.45\00:12:32.91 And she was waking up where she got disoriented; 00:12:32.95\00:12:36.28 she couldn't function; she couldn't remember things; 00:12:36.32\00:12:39.42 her memory was really bad, and she was in the clinic 00:12:39.45\00:12:42.56 where I was working and she ended up going and getting 00:12:42.59\00:12:46.59 one of those machines, an APAP machine 00:12:46.63\00:12:49.63 that helps the oxygen levels at night, 00:12:49.66\00:12:52.47 and the difference was remarkable. 00:12:52.50\00:12:54.14 She was told that if she didn't do that, her brain would 00:12:54.17\00:12:58.47 literally die because her oxygen levels were so low 00:12:58.51\00:13:01.08 in the morning, it would be causing permanent 00:13:01.11\00:13:03.41 like dementia-type state. 00:13:03.45\00:13:05.21 So that's how powerful, with our brain and our intelligence, 00:13:05.25\00:13:08.48 that something like that is. 00:13:08.52\00:13:10.25 And this sort of goes both ways. 00:13:10.29\00:13:12.62 We think about the diet improving the brain, 00:13:12.65\00:13:17.33 but you can use your brain to improve your diet, obviously. 00:13:17.36\00:13:20.56 That's right! That's right! 00:13:20.60\00:13:22.03 And so better choices on foods make a difference. 00:13:22.06\00:13:25.23 I was at a place out in Colorado, 00:13:25.27\00:13:28.07 where one of the gentleman there had a problem with 00:13:28.10\00:13:31.37 snoring which is usually a sign this might be 00:13:31.41\00:13:34.61 headed toward the sleep apnea. 00:13:34.64\00:13:36.51 He changed his diet to one like Daniel's diet, 00:13:36.54\00:13:40.42 and within 6 weeks, he was no longer snoring. 00:13:40.45\00:13:44.19 His wife said, his snore went away. 00:13:44.22\00:13:46.25 He slept better. 00:13:46.29\00:13:47.62 Okay well research shows it takes about 6 years off 00:13:47.66\00:13:50.13 your life if your snore, so there you go! 00:13:50.16\00:13:54.46 Yeah, that's a lot, isn't it? 00:13:54.50\00:13:56.20 I think that's scary. It is isn't it? 00:13:56.23\00:13:59.23 So if you're snoring, you need to do things, 00:13:59.27\00:14:03.04 and diet and treat it. 00:14:03.07\00:14:04.41 You need to get a grip on and that can make such a difference. 00:14:04.44\00:14:07.28 It's not even just the length of our lives, 00:14:07.31\00:14:10.68 it's the quality of our lives between now and then 00:14:10.71\00:14:13.62 because it's going to come to all of us, 00:14:13.65\00:14:15.78 but quality of life is huge. 00:14:15.82\00:14:18.32 So, you know, and that's what you were talking about 00:14:18.35\00:14:22.09 with this lady who is falling asleep and had brain fog 00:14:22.12\00:14:26.83 and everything and then you mentioned this other person. 00:14:26.86\00:14:29.73 So yeah, that's really important, 00:14:29.76\00:14:33.70 that's right here, right now. 00:14:33.74\00:14:35.80 Six weeks to be able to get rid of the snoring, great. 00:14:35.84\00:14:40.51 And another aspect to this, I mean, it got rid of snores, 00:14:40.54\00:14:43.98 the study showed somebody will switch to a total 00:14:44.01\00:14:46.68 vegetarian diet, especially one that would help you lose weight 00:14:46.72\00:14:49.78 which it usually does. Which helps... 00:14:49.82\00:14:51.79 It actually clears up psychotic symptoms. 00:14:51.82\00:14:54.19 I'm sure you found that in your profession. 00:14:54.22\00:14:56.62 It's one of the things I do and I've done some training 00:14:56.66\00:14:59.09 in nutritional medicine for mental health, 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.10 and that's one of the prime moves. 00:15:01.13\00:15:02.86 One is sugar and I get parents coming to me with their kids 00:15:02.90\00:15:06.23 who are just running amuck at home and can't focus 00:15:06.27\00:15:08.84 and their room is a mess; the first thing I do is get 00:15:08.87\00:15:11.01 them to change their diet and often that is the thing 00:15:11.04\00:15:14.18 that helps their behavior so it's no longer that 00:15:14.21\00:15:16.88 ADHD hyperactivity, they actually can settle and focus. 00:15:16.91\00:15:21.25 You talked about psychotic, that sounds terrible 00:15:21.28\00:15:23.59 to think that the way we're eating and living 00:15:23.62\00:15:27.82 and so on can do that, that's just not falling asleep, 00:15:27.86\00:15:32.56 that's a bit more serious. 00:15:32.59\00:15:34.10 Well this is where the brain is very deranged 00:15:34.13\00:15:36.53 with psychosis and it can't rationally work, 00:15:36.56\00:15:39.13 it can't function properly. 00:15:39.17\00:15:41.37 And the contributing things to that are sugar and what else 00:15:41.40\00:15:45.14 ... well more, you were talking about foods, 00:15:45.17\00:15:47.08 and we've got to remember, a lot of people are eating 00:15:47.11\00:15:48.91 foods that probably have lots of additives and things 00:15:48.94\00:15:51.81 that affect the brain and that's a contributing factor. 00:15:51.85\00:15:55.42 It's the types of foods which is what John is talking about, 00:15:55.45\00:15:58.19 but it's also what is in the foods; the sprays, 00:15:58.22\00:16:00.66 that, you know, all these things that, 00:16:00.69\00:16:02.12 you know, so this is why looking at quality of food 00:16:02.16\00:16:04.89 is vital, so trying to get organics and getting things 00:16:04.93\00:16:08.63 that aren't sprayed or at least cleaning them properly 00:16:08.66\00:16:10.77 if you can't afford that. Yes 00:16:10.80\00:16:13.20 And you think about this, our topic is 00:16:13.23\00:16:15.34 "meat and intelligence," what if I ate the food the cow ate? 00:16:15.37\00:16:19.51 How many pounds of food does it take to make him 00:16:20.31\00:16:22.61 produce one pound of meat? 00:16:22.64\00:16:24.35 Well it's like 16 pounds of grain and probably 00:16:24.38\00:16:27.55 many more pounds of grass to produce one pound of meat, 00:16:27.58\00:16:30.25 but you know, you eat that meat. 00:16:30.29\00:16:32.09 Suppose for example, the cow was eating nice greens 00:16:32.12\00:16:35.56 that had vitamin C, guess what? 00:16:35.59\00:16:37.23 None of that vitamin C comes through the meat. 00:16:37.26\00:16:39.16 I tell people if they're going to choose meat 00:16:39.19\00:16:41.00 as a part of their diet, they have to be very careful 00:16:41.03\00:16:43.26 or they're not going to get their nutrition. 00:16:43.30\00:16:45.23 It's nutritionally poor, you want nutritionally 00:16:45.27\00:16:48.84 dense foods and that's going to be your fresh fruits, 00:16:48.87\00:16:51.04 your fresh vegetables, your nuts and seeds, 00:16:51.07\00:16:52.74 your beans, your grains... 00:16:52.77\00:16:54.11 It's not going to be what the cow ate to produce 00:16:54.14\00:16:56.31 a little bit of protein. 00:16:56.34\00:16:57.81 And when you look at the size of the land you use 00:16:57.85\00:17:00.48 for the cow if you put in a grain crop, 00:17:00.52\00:17:03.59 the density is far greater than a cow on that piece of land. 00:17:03.62\00:17:07.72 That's right and it's becoming a really big issue 00:17:07.76\00:17:10.13 with the population explosion. 00:17:10.16\00:17:12.03 That's another whole area that we might talk about 00:17:12.06\00:17:14.16 on another day. 00:17:14.20\00:17:15.53 But it is a huge issue, really worse than we 00:17:15.56\00:17:18.53 probably even realize. 00:17:18.57\00:17:20.04 But that was a good point that you made, John, about 00:17:20.07\00:17:25.47 not getting some of the nutrients that the cow, 00:17:25.51\00:17:28.98 for example, got and another one is phytochemicals. 00:17:29.01\00:17:32.48 There are thousands of them and "phyto" means plant. 00:17:32.51\00:17:35.45 They only come in plant foods. 00:17:35.48\00:17:38.35 Now, they just don't appear in any animals foods, 00:17:38.39\00:17:41.49 so it really is better to go to the primary source 00:17:41.52\00:17:44.89 of the nutrition because the cow does all right on 00:17:44.93\00:17:48.16 a vegetarian diet, doesn't it? 00:17:48.20\00:17:51.43 I was going to say, intelligence does depend on nutrition, 00:17:51.47\00:17:54.54 right? If we don't have the nutrients, the brain can't 00:17:54.57\00:17:57.07 function our intelligence is impaired. 00:17:57.11\00:17:59.24 They've done a lot of studies even here in our country, 00:17:59.27\00:18:02.41 and in other countries on children and intelligence, 00:18:02.44\00:18:05.51 and they found when you have children who are on a junk 00:18:05.55\00:18:07.98 food diet, their intelligence doesn't develop because 00:18:08.02\00:18:11.52 when we're talking about what we call "IQ," 00:18:11.55\00:18:13.39 "intelligent quotient," which is how we mentally function 00:18:13.42\00:18:17.43 to process in time and space and do mathematics 00:18:17.46\00:18:20.83 and things like that, and that can be impaired 00:18:20.86\00:18:24.47 where their intelligence that they inherit 00:18:24.50\00:18:26.84 is actually not fulfilled. 00:18:26.87\00:18:29.60 So we can do a lot of damage, trauma will damage that as well, 00:18:29.64\00:18:32.67 but the good news is the brain is what we call, "neuroplastic," 00:18:32.71\00:18:35.88 it grows and changes. 00:18:35.91\00:18:37.65 The cells and the neurons can actually grow in new pathways 00:18:37.68\00:18:41.45 which makes a huge difference. 00:18:41.48\00:18:43.49 So we can develop intelligence 00:18:43.52\00:18:45.25 to our maximum inherited capacity. Yes 00:18:45.29\00:18:48.52 And there's another kind of intelligence too... 00:18:48.56\00:18:51.76 Do you want to have a little word about that? 00:18:51.79\00:18:53.60 When we talk about intelligence, and this is something 00:18:53.63\00:18:56.30 that is being more noticed now, we have to look at 00:18:56.33\00:18:58.83 our emotions and what we call "emotional quotient." 00:18:58.87\00:19:02.34 We've have the intelligence quotient, 00:19:02.37\00:19:03.97 and we've got an emotional quotient. 00:19:04.01\00:19:05.71 The intelligence quotient is inherited, 00:19:05.74\00:19:07.91 but your emotional quotient is learned. Yes 00:19:07.94\00:19:10.65 So if you are born into a family where there is trauma 00:19:10.68\00:19:13.75 or some sort of problem and stress, then emotionally, 00:19:13.78\00:19:18.19 you're not developing even from 00:19:18.22\00:19:19.69 conception to birth in a healthy way. 00:19:19.72\00:19:22.12 Because the baby's brain, up until 2, 00:19:22.19\00:19:24.56 the brain functions on survival and emotion, 00:19:24.59\00:19:27.00 it doesn't have the IQ factor, 00:19:27.03\00:19:29.00 and that develops from about 2 on. 00:19:29.03\00:19:31.73 But if there is damage and that child is programming 00:19:31.77\00:19:34.04 that damage emotionally, that it impairs the ability to 00:19:34.07\00:19:37.04 use their IQ from 2 on and they go 00:19:37.07\00:19:40.58 on to either control or chaos. 00:19:40.61\00:19:44.38 So that means intelligence is impaired and emotions are, 00:19:44.41\00:19:48.25 you know, people are not coping emotionally. 00:19:48.28\00:19:50.59 You know, they have fear, anxiety, 00:19:50.62\00:19:52.55 obsessive compulsive disorders, and it all goes back 00:19:52.59\00:19:55.56 to that early childhood development in the environment 00:19:55.59\00:19:58.59 and how their emotions develop. 00:19:58.63\00:20:01.00 And look, we all want to be more intelligent. We do! 00:20:01.03\00:20:04.30 In terms of our IQ and not impairing that, unclouding it, 00:20:04.33\00:20:08.10 and we all want that emotional intelligence too, 00:20:08.14\00:20:10.17 so what a tremendous thing that we know the kinds of 00:20:10.21\00:20:13.84 foods which are going to help us to actually function better, 00:20:13.88\00:20:18.45 and make better choices which will help us to function better 00:20:18.48\00:20:21.48 and so it goes around, yes. 00:20:21.52\00:20:23.85 I might say, on this business of meat and intelligence, 00:20:23.89\00:20:27.72 somebody eating largely a meat diet, is increasing the amount 00:20:27.76\00:20:32.96 of protein in their diet, at least to a certain extent, 00:20:32.99\00:20:36.53 but not getting much complex carbohydrates. Yes 00:20:36.56\00:20:40.10 ... Which means that the body is going to be shifted from 00:20:40.14\00:20:42.60 running the brain on glucose to running it on ketones, 00:20:42.64\00:20:47.01 a breakdown of protein and that is not the brain's favorite food 00:20:47.04\00:20:51.25 for functioning at its highest level. 00:20:51.28\00:20:54.15 What it can do is inflame the brain and that causes 00:20:54.18\00:20:58.02 irritability, so when you're looking at emotions in people, 00:20:58.05\00:21:01.12 particularly if they are eating a lot of meat, 00:21:01.16\00:21:02.52 and not really getting other nutrients, 00:21:02.56\00:21:04.73 the literature I've looked at suggests that it can 00:21:04.76\00:21:08.46 cause anger, aggression. 00:21:08.50\00:21:10.47 You know, people who are big meat-eaters 00:21:10.50\00:21:12.10 it can be more aggressive than people who are not. 00:21:12.13\00:21:14.04 So that's again the emotional quotient, isn't it? Yes 00:21:14.07\00:21:16.97 Because if aggression is not a healthy thing, 00:21:17.01\00:21:18.91 it's not an intelligent thing. No, no that's right. 00:21:18.94\00:21:21.74 I think it's tremendous, Jenny, that you are a health 00:21:21.78\00:21:25.21 psychologist because you've got a feel for both of these 00:21:25.25\00:21:29.28 things and when people come to you with problems, 00:21:29.32\00:21:33.32 you can also help them to make good food choices 00:21:33.36\00:21:37.03 to help them with what's going 00:21:37.06\00:21:38.43 on in their emotions and in their minds. 00:21:38.46\00:21:40.23 So, what a lovely combination to have both of those. 00:21:40.26\00:21:44.43 I get good results, yeah, because people are doing 00:21:44.47\00:21:47.27 the whole package, not just trying to think 00:21:47.30\00:21:49.54 their way out of things. That's right! 00:21:49.57\00:21:50.91 They are actually fine-tuning the intelligence 00:21:50.94\00:21:53.68 in the system by doing things like that 00:21:53.71\00:21:55.54 and certainly meat is one that we need to really 00:21:55.58\00:21:58.48 reconsider our options. 00:21:58.51\00:21:59.98 Yeah, tremendous connection between the mind and the body 00:22:00.02\00:22:02.88 and the body and the mind. Totally 00:22:02.92\00:22:04.25 And I don't think we half appreciate that, 00:22:04.29\00:22:07.39 and even though we might even know it, we can forget that, 00:22:07.42\00:22:10.66 but it's a really, really important thing to know. 00:22:10.69\00:22:13.43 Yes, this is why it's so important to educate people. 00:22:13.46\00:22:15.56 A lot of what I do, and the same with you, John, 00:22:15.60\00:22:17.43 I'm sure is to educate. Yes 00:22:17.47\00:22:19.30 Give people intelligent choices and help them to 00:22:19.33\00:22:21.74 understand because when they understand how the brain works, 00:22:21.77\00:22:24.77 and what's impacting it like meat, 00:22:24.81\00:22:26.68 then they're going to make better choices. Yes 00:22:26.71\00:22:28.84 I don't know how this is actually sounding 00:22:28.88\00:22:31.31 to some of the people tuning in, especially people who 00:22:31.35\00:22:34.55 ... I mean I grew up eating meat, and if I had had 00:22:34.58\00:22:37.45 my way, which I did not, I would have eaten meat 00:22:37.49\00:22:42.69 and left the vegetables, they were not my preferred thing, 00:22:42.72\00:22:45.79 but, unfortunately, I had good parents who made me 00:22:45.83\00:22:50.37 eat my vegetables, and in my teens I became a vegetarian, 00:22:50.40\00:22:55.67 not a healthy one though, but over time, 00:22:55.70\00:22:59.81 I've progressed from there and I understand the 00:22:59.84\00:23:01.84 kinds of things that you've been talking about here. 00:23:01.88\00:23:04.01 And it's just made such a difference because I actually, 00:23:04.05\00:23:07.68 honestly, apart from the odd time, we all have times 00:23:07.72\00:23:12.15 when we're not on top, but, honestly, I have more energy 00:23:12.19\00:23:16.19 now than when I was in my teens, I was not doing well. 00:23:16.22\00:23:18.83 You actually get younger when you give up meat, not older. 00:23:18.86\00:23:21.83 Because I was brought up like you the meat and 3-veg principle 00:23:21.86\00:23:25.17 and have changed my diet and the more I refine it and improve 00:23:25.20\00:23:28.50 on it and learn and that's why I find I like listening 00:23:28.54\00:23:31.27 to John because he teaches me a lot. Yes 00:23:31.31\00:23:33.41 The better my brain works and I get the tiredness, 00:23:33.44\00:23:35.81 I sleep much better, it cures a lot of mental illnesses. 00:23:35.84\00:23:38.51 A lot of things happen, a lot of things 00:23:38.55\00:23:40.25 that impact on our life, and so sleep is a huge thing. 00:23:40.28\00:23:44.32 It's really huge because if you don't get enough sleep, 00:23:44.35\00:23:46.86 you don't function. 00:23:46.89\00:23:48.76 So all these things come together, 00:23:48.79\00:23:51.03 and I was just thinking back to Daniel and the situation 00:23:51.06\00:23:55.76 he was in and it was a terrible situation, 00:23:55.80\00:23:57.93 have to be called trauma, but he drew on his 00:23:57.97\00:24:02.47 spiritual resources and that was a really big thing. 00:24:02.50\00:24:06.17 And I would just say to people tuning in, 00:24:06.21\00:24:09.11 if you haven't done that and you don't even know how, 00:24:09.14\00:24:12.21 be aware that there is a God who loves you so much 00:24:12.25\00:24:16.15 that He would rather die than live without you, 00:24:16.18\00:24:19.12 and that's a fact because that's what happened. 00:24:19.15\00:24:21.39 And, if you're not sure even how to plug in to the source 00:24:21.42\00:24:24.96 of life itself, so-to-speak, just talk to Him like 00:24:24.99\00:24:28.56 you would to a friend about anything... anything! 00:24:28.60\00:24:31.70 Because everything that matters to you, matters to God; 00:24:31.73\00:24:36.40 the good, the bad, and the ugly, 00:24:36.44\00:24:38.94 so you can talk to Him about anything. 00:24:38.97\00:24:41.14 It might be a new thing, but I think that's such an 00:24:41.18\00:24:43.88 important thing and that got Daniel and his three friends 00:24:43.91\00:24:46.95 through life-threatening situations. 00:24:46.98\00:24:49.88 They had to face that and it's something that I don't 00:24:49.92\00:24:54.32 think some people even perhaps understand or utilize, 00:24:54.36\00:24:57.09 and it's such a big thing that will impact on us just as much 00:24:57.13\00:25:01.00 if not more, than the physical aspect of food and exercise 00:25:01.03\00:25:05.13 and so on and the thinking aspect is another strand that 00:25:05.17\00:25:08.90 we need to think about. 00:25:08.94\00:25:13.51 Well their brains were sharp, weren't they, 00:25:13.54\00:25:15.64 and they used their intelligence to make an intelligent 00:25:15.68\00:25:18.21 decision not to go with the 00:25:18.25\00:25:19.71 meat and the things at the feasts. Yes, they did. 00:25:19.75\00:25:22.32 And maybe you're thinking, "Well, if I eat vegetables, 00:25:22.35\00:25:24.85 where am I going to get my strength?" 00:25:24.89\00:25:26.22 Of course, we're talking about meat and intelligence here, 00:25:26.25\00:25:28.69 but I'll tell you a story... I had a gentleman 00:25:28.72\00:25:31.36 whose job it was to load semitrailers with wood for 00:25:31.39\00:25:36.23 wood heaters and he was filling his trailers, 00:25:36.26\00:25:39.63 and he'd would be so worn out at the end of the day... 00:25:39.67\00:25:41.80 he was in his 20s, he thought he would get strong, 00:25:41.87\00:25:43.97 but he was just always worn out and so tired; 00:25:44.01\00:25:45.94 he'd come home and go to bed and go to sleep, 00:25:45.97\00:25:47.81 and not spend time with the family. 00:25:47.84\00:25:49.58 He came to some of our meetings, decided okay, 00:25:49.61\00:25:52.41 we need to eat more vegetables. 00:25:52.45\00:25:53.92 Told his wife, "Let's eat more vegetables." 00:25:53.95\00:25:56.08 Within about 6 weeks, he was feeling strong; 00:25:56.12\00:26:00.52 he wasn't coming home all tired out and he was getting stronger. 00:26:00.56\00:26:03.63 He wasn't all worn out at the end of the day. 00:26:03.66\00:26:06.16 Vegetables give you much more strength than meat. 00:26:06.19\00:26:10.03 Well they're more dense in nutrients, 00:26:10.07\00:26:11.67 it makes sense, doesn't it? 00:26:11.70\00:26:13.03 And they've got the carbs which is the energy source 00:26:13.07\00:26:17.01 that our body really needs to function on... 00:26:17.04\00:26:19.91 And you'll find this in any of the recommendations 00:26:19.94\00:26:23.78 I think, in the various countries, plant foods dominate. 00:26:23.81\00:26:27.02 It's not what we do, but that's the recommendation, 00:26:27.05\00:26:31.22 and if we were closer to the recommendations even of 00:26:31.25\00:26:35.62 our country, we would do better. 00:26:35.66\00:26:38.56 We do not do well in Australia. 00:26:38.59\00:26:40.76 We are so far from the recommendations, 00:26:40.80\00:26:44.80 it's a little bit scary... Well, a lot of countries are like that 00:26:44.83\00:26:47.64 It's often the cultures that live more simply 00:26:47.67\00:26:51.67 that actually have better diets because they live off the land; 00:26:51.71\00:26:55.81 they grow their own foods; they don't eat as much. 00:26:55.84\00:26:59.61 And often they found, that like to eat meat, 00:26:59.65\00:27:01.82 but they often found that people that come from those 00:27:01.85\00:27:03.89 countries can come to a Western diet, start to deteriorate 00:27:03.92\00:27:06.65 and get a lot of the diseases we do. Ohh yes 00:27:06.69\00:27:08.66 That's quite well-documented in the research. 00:27:08.69\00:27:10.43 That's right, that's right. In the migrant studies 00:27:10.46\00:27:13.06 it shows again and again, doesn't it, 00:27:13.09\00:27:14.96 when people move to an area where they're eating more like 00:27:15.00\00:27:17.93 Western people or developed countries do that, 00:27:17.97\00:27:20.80 they pay dearly for that. 00:27:20.84\00:27:22.70 So that's been a little bit like a recurring theme, isn't it? 00:27:22.74\00:27:27.04 It doesn't seem to matter what we're looking at 00:27:27.08\00:27:29.18 what problems we're looking at, this seems to be 00:27:29.21\00:27:32.05 the kind of lifestyle that's going to make us 00:27:32.08\00:27:34.98 better in so many different ways. 00:27:35.02\00:27:37.42 But that's been really good, and thank you for those stories. 00:27:37.45\00:27:41.32 Thank you for the information, and Jenny, you had the other 00:27:41.36\00:27:44.29 aspects too that went on to help us have a clear brain 00:27:44.33\00:27:48.76 so that we can function better and so that we can make 00:27:48.80\00:27:51.10 better choices so that we'll have a clear brain. 00:27:51.13\00:27:55.57 So that's our program for today. 00:27:55.60\00:27:58.41 And if you would like a fact sheet of the program, 00:27:58.44\00:28:00.61 or you would like to watch our programs on demand, 00:28:00.64\00:28:03.01 just visit our website: 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:03.04\00:28:07.48 and click on the watch button, 00:28:07.52\00:28:09.15 and John or Jennifer are happy to answer your questions. 00:28:09.18\00:28:13.09 So if you have questions that we haven't covered 00:28:13.12\00:28:15.92 or you have a health concern, just email them at 00:28:15.96\00:28:19.03 Healthy Living at: 3abnaustralia.org.au 00:28:19.06\00:28:23.57 And join us next time on "Healthy Living" 00:28:23.60\00:28:26.47
