Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:01.36\00:00:03.26 that gives hope and fosters permanent, 00:00:03.30\00:00:05.53 positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:05.57\00:00:08.67 and their communities. 00:00:08.70\00:00:11.37 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, 00:00:11.41\00:00:15.44 India, Nepal, 00:00:15.48\00:00:17.21 Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. 00:00:17.25\00:00:19.55 Child Impact's investment in the lives 00:00:20.72\00:00:22.68 of more than 3,500 children 00:00:22.72\00:00:24.85 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:24.89\00:00:27.89 Outreach spans from child rescue operations 00:00:27.92\00:00:30.26 to providing an education 00:00:30.29\00:00:31.76 and a home for deaf and blind children and orphans. 00:00:31.79\00:00:35.30 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors give hope 00:00:35.33\00:00:38.97 to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:39.00\00:00:40.77 Nepal is a country full of diversity. 00:01:01.86\00:01:04.83 It is located between Tibet of China to the north 00:01:04.86\00:01:08.26 and India to the south, east and west. 00:01:08.30\00:01:11.47 Geographically, it ranges 00:01:11.50\00:01:12.90 from fertile plains near sea level, 00:01:12.93\00:01:15.00 to forested hills in eight of the world's 00:01:15.04\00:01:17.67 10 tallest mountains, 00:01:17.71\00:01:19.41 one of which is Mount Everest, the tallest point on earth. 00:01:19.44\00:01:23.75 This makes Nepal a very geographically 00:01:23.78\00:01:25.98 diverse country that is only somewhat 00:01:26.01\00:01:28.25 larger than the state of Arkansas. 00:01:28.28\00:01:30.59 The people of Nepal originate from India, Tibet, 00:01:30.62\00:01:33.79 North Burma, and China. 00:01:33.82\00:01:36.42 But that's only the tip of the iceberg. 00:01:36.46\00:01:39.09 One hundred and twenty five distinct ethnic groups, 00:01:39.13\00:01:42.20 speaking 123 different mother tongues, 00:01:42.23\00:01:45.27 all call Nepal home. 00:01:45.30\00:01:47.64 Religiously, they are not as diverse, 00:01:47.67\00:01:49.97 with 81% of the population being Hindu, 00:01:50.01\00:01:53.14 9% being Buddhist, 00:01:53.17\00:01:55.04 and then a small percentage of other religions, 00:01:55.08\00:01:57.41 including only 1.4% being Christian. 00:01:57.45\00:02:01.42 Poverty is a struggle for most Nepalese. 00:02:01.45\00:02:05.02 This poverty creates burdens 00:02:05.05\00:02:06.82 and problems in every aspect of life. 00:02:06.86\00:02:09.82 Many Nepalese have to survive on two dollars a day, 00:02:09.86\00:02:12.59 which means that 00:02:12.63\00:02:13.96 they are not able to have access 00:02:14.00\00:02:15.33 to health care, 00:02:15.36\00:02:16.70 even though the average doctor's visit 00:02:16.73\00:02:18.17 only costs a dollar. 00:02:18.20\00:02:20.50 In many countries with high levels of poverty, 00:02:20.54\00:02:22.74 like Nepal, 00:02:22.77\00:02:24.11 women and children are the ones 00:02:24.14\00:02:25.47 that suffer the most. 00:02:25.51\00:02:27.74 With even the basics taking up all of their money, 00:02:27.78\00:02:30.41 it is impossible for them to fund 00:02:30.45\00:02:32.11 an education for their children. 00:02:32.15\00:02:35.08 In the midst of all this need, 00:02:35.12\00:02:36.79 Child Impact is working to help the Nepalese 00:02:36.82\00:02:39.92 For most of our work is in India. 00:02:39.95\00:02:43.59 But when we come to Nepal, 00:02:43.63\00:02:46.06 we see a different level of poverty. 00:02:46.09\00:02:48.73 The economy is certainly worse here, 00:02:48.76\00:02:50.70 the level of poverty, the level of pollution, 00:02:50.73\00:02:54.14 there's a huge need, and we want to do 00:02:54.17\00:02:56.14 more in Nepal. 00:02:56.17\00:02:57.51 In each of the many countries that Child Impact operates, 00:02:57.54\00:03:00.48 they seek to address 00:03:00.51\00:03:01.84 the greatest need in that country. 00:03:01.88\00:03:03.81 Nepal has a unique issue that 00:03:03.85\00:03:05.55 Child Impact is working to improve. 00:03:05.58\00:03:07.68 The main thing that we're involved within Nepal 00:03:07.72\00:03:10.29 is the Scheer Adventist Memorial Hospital, 00:03:10.32\00:03:13.86 and there's two aspects to that. 00:03:13.89\00:03:15.66 One is that we are still doing woman's prolapse operations, 00:03:15.69\00:03:20.56 which have a huge need in Nepal. 00:03:20.60\00:03:23.26 And also the school is very involved 00:03:23.30\00:03:26.17 in treating burns for children. 00:03:26.20\00:03:28.87 Nepal seems to have a high number of child burns, 00:03:28.90\00:03:34.44 and I guess this is brought 00:03:34.48\00:03:35.94 from the gas in the houses 00:03:35.98\00:03:38.11 and just simply the lack of education 00:03:38.15\00:03:40.98 in dealing with gas and fire. 00:03:41.02\00:03:43.42 And so we're very excited that we can partner 00:03:43.45\00:03:45.82 with Scheer Adventist Memorial Hospital in Nepal. 00:03:45.85\00:03:50.83 Scheer Memorial Hospital 00:03:50.86\00:03:52.29 has a long history of helping the people of Nepal. 00:03:52.33\00:03:55.73 Beginning in the late 1950s by Dr. Stanley 00:03:55.76\00:03:58.70 and Raylene Sturges, 00:03:58.73\00:04:00.20 in the village of Banepa, 00:04:00.24\00:04:01.80 it has grown to be a beacon for the surrounding area. 00:04:01.84\00:04:04.74 One of the many ways that 00:04:04.77\00:04:06.11 Scheer helps the people of Nepal 00:04:06.14\00:04:07.81 is through surgeries 00:04:07.84\00:04:09.18 to fix the problem of uterine prolapse. 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.31 Yeah, this is something very interesting, 00:04:11.35\00:04:12.88 because this condition of uterine prolapse 00:04:12.91\00:04:15.42 is not so common in most of the countries. 00:04:15.45\00:04:18.25 But interestingly, in Nepal, 00:04:18.29\00:04:20.72 it is very common to see uterine prolapse in woman. 00:04:20.76\00:04:25.03 And the reason, we don't know exactly the reason, 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.40 but over here the ladies 00:04:27.43\00:04:30.07 have had to carry a lot of weight. 00:04:30.10\00:04:32.13 So, weight carrying also 00:04:32.17\00:04:34.57 provide incidence of prolapse more high, 00:04:34.60\00:04:39.31 also having more children 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.21 also provide a more incidence of having this problem. 00:04:41.24\00:04:45.41 So it is multifactorial, 00:04:45.45\00:04:47.22 you cannot point to only one thing 00:04:47.25\00:04:51.29 but what we know is that 00:04:51.32\00:04:53.76 in Nepal it is very common to have this problem. 00:04:53.79\00:04:58.06 Due to the extreme poverty of Nepal, 00:04:58.09\00:05:00.10 women are often used to carry heavy loads, 00:05:00.13\00:05:02.60 which sometimes weigh over 100 pounds. 00:05:02.63\00:05:05.27 Often they are not given time to rest after giving birth, 00:05:05.30\00:05:08.34 but have to resume working. 00:05:08.37\00:05:09.80 While these may not be the direct cause 00:05:09.84\00:05:11.57 of prolapse in Nepal, 00:05:11.61\00:05:13.27 it is more than likely a contributing factor. 00:05:13.31\00:05:15.78 Thanks to the support of Child Impact, 00:05:15.81\00:05:18.01 many women are able to find relief at Scheer Memorial. 00:05:18.05\00:05:21.28 It's the only Adventist Hospital in Nepal. 00:05:21.32\00:05:24.95 It's a critical part of the church in Nepal. 00:05:24.99\00:05:28.42 And they now have the facilities to do 00:05:28.46\00:05:32.96 the prolapse operations. 00:05:32.99\00:05:35.66 And so our funding program is very valuable to them, 00:05:35.70\00:05:40.57 because they have plenty of capacity. 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.94 And so, for us, it's very rewarding, 00:05:42.97\00:05:46.91 not only to make the lives... 00:05:46.94\00:05:50.15 The change of lives with the woman, 00:05:50.18\00:05:52.38 but also we're able to help the institution in gaining work 00:05:52.41\00:05:56.85 and doing work in the community. 00:05:56.89\00:05:59.75 Here at the hospital, 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.86 we have done a lot of prolapse operations. 00:06:01.89\00:06:04.89 I think I forget how many years 00:06:04.93\00:06:06.73 we've been doing it now, maybe 10 or 11 years. 00:06:06.76\00:06:09.20 But during that time, 00:06:09.23\00:06:10.57 we have now operated on between 8 and 9,000 ladies. 00:06:10.60\00:06:14.27 And to see the difference it makes, you know, 00:06:14.30\00:06:18.81 I just can't imagine 00:06:18.84\00:06:20.98 how these women like this being. 00:06:21.01\00:06:22.91 I remember one lady, she told us that 00:06:22.94\00:06:24.91 she had been walking around 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.28 with this prolapse hanging out of her body 00:06:26.31\00:06:29.28 for 50 years. 00:06:29.32\00:06:31.59 While the physical suffering that 00:06:31.62\00:06:32.95 these women go through is unimaginable, 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.06 their pain does not end there. 00:06:35.09\00:06:37.29 You know, in Nepal, given the family structure, 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.80 the cultural environment, 00:06:40.83\00:06:43.03 women with this sort of affliction 00:06:43.06\00:06:45.03 or issue are usually shunned. 00:06:45.07\00:06:48.00 If they are still within the family, 00:06:48.04\00:06:51.01 they're usually locked away. 00:06:51.04\00:06:52.77 So they are not seen. 00:06:52.81\00:06:54.14 They are the invisible women in the country. 00:06:54.18\00:06:57.11 So by helping these women, we do multiple things. 00:06:57.15\00:07:00.38 We restore these women to have 00:07:00.42\00:07:03.49 and empower them to a full participation 00:07:03.52\00:07:06.65 in the family and their society. 00:07:06.69\00:07:08.66 It's actually transforming their lives. 00:07:08.69\00:07:11.69 So once they're accepted into the family, 00:07:11.73\00:07:13.80 they also then can contribute to the family, 00:07:13.83\00:07:16.36 hold the head up high, 00:07:16.40\00:07:17.73 the family is proud of them, 00:07:17.77\00:07:19.13 there are no issues with them, 00:07:19.17\00:07:21.74 so that they can then get employment too, 00:07:21.77\00:07:24.27 and also contribute to the family. 00:07:24.31\00:07:25.97 So by helping these women, we transform their lives, 00:07:26.01\00:07:29.71 help them integrate into their families, 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.11 help the families develop to be whole families, 00:07:32.15\00:07:35.25 not families with some shame in them, 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.35 but whole family, so the entire family benefits 00:07:37.39\00:07:40.86 and then these people 00:07:40.89\00:07:42.22 can participate in their society. 00:07:42.26\00:07:44.36 So one operation transforms a whole range of people 00:07:44.39\00:07:49.40 and has the potential to transform society. 00:07:49.43\00:07:53.80 That is the power of helping one. 00:07:53.84\00:07:56.57 One person helping one can transform many. 00:07:56.60\00:08:01.08 The work of Scheer Memorial and Child Impact 00:08:01.11\00:08:03.51 has changed the lives of thousands of women 00:08:03.55\00:08:05.98 and their families. 00:08:06.01\00:08:07.38 These women are able to be a part of society 00:08:07.42\00:08:09.62 without shame and without pain. 00:08:09.65\00:08:12.55 Women's prolapse is only one effect 00:08:12.59\00:08:14.69 of Nepal's crippling poverty. 00:08:14.72\00:08:16.66 Child Impact is also working 00:08:16.69\00:08:18.16 to break the poverty cycle through education. 00:08:18.19\00:08:21.86 In Nepal, Child Impact is working closely 00:08:21.90\00:08:26.17 with what is called the ECA School. 00:08:26.20\00:08:29.87 It's a school that was originally located 00:08:29.90\00:08:32.97 at Scheer Adventist Memorial Hospital, 00:08:33.01\00:08:36.64 and has now moved about a mile away. 00:08:36.68\00:08:39.28 And we're very excited that 00:08:39.31\00:08:40.85 we can sponsor kids at the school 00:08:40.88\00:08:43.62 and help contribute to its growth. 00:08:43.65\00:08:48.26 And we're very committed to that school. 00:08:48.29\00:08:51.86 ECA gives hope to children 00:08:51.89\00:08:53.96 and their families that otherwise 00:08:54.00\00:08:55.46 would be stuck in povert 00:08:55.50\00:08:56.93 having to do back breaking labor. 00:08:56.97\00:08:59.53 The main thing is education. 00:08:59.57\00:09:01.90 And because in this part of the world, 00:09:01.94\00:09:03.54 if you've got no education, 00:09:03.57\00:09:05.17 your life is really, you know, 00:09:05.21\00:09:10.38 you can't earn hardly anything, all you can do is labor. 00:09:10.41\00:09:15.18 And in many places 00:09:15.22\00:09:16.55 what the labor is paid is almost nothing. 00:09:16.58\00:09:19.49 So I think education 00:09:19.52\00:09:21.36 just makes so much difference in this part of the world, 00:09:21.39\00:09:24.49 more than a dozen in Western countries. 00:09:24.53\00:09:28.76 One child whose life 00:09:28.80\00:09:30.13 is being changed is Suman Praja. 00:09:30.17\00:09:32.50 Suman was orphaned when he was very young 00:09:32.53\00:09:34.70 and was left to beg in the streets. 00:09:34.74\00:09:36.71 A local pastor found him 00:09:36.74\00:09:38.24 and took Suman to a small orphanage 00:09:38.27\00:09:40.04 that he was running. 00:09:40.08\00:09:41.41 His church members supported his work, 00:09:41.44\00:09:43.11 which supplied the food and housing for the orphans. 00:09:43.14\00:09:45.88 The church was unable to pay 00:09:45.91\00:09:47.32 for Suman's tuition fees at ECA. 00:09:47.35\00:09:49.98 Thankfully, Child Impact is sponsoring him. 00:09:50.02\00:09:52.25 This is the power of sponsorship, 00:09:52.29\00:09:54.56 the power to uplift a child from wherever they are 00:09:54.59\00:09:57.53 and give them a choice for their future. 00:09:57.56\00:10:01.16 In these cultures, usually, 00:10:01.20\00:10:03.30 the educated children will care for the parents 00:10:03.33\00:10:05.53 also when they get old. 00:10:05.57\00:10:07.30 Because if a parent gets to the place 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.84 where they're too sick 00:10:09.87\00:10:11.61 and too old to work in the fields 00:10:11.64\00:10:13.51 or whatever laboring work 00:10:13.54\00:10:15.18 they've been doing well, what do you do? 00:10:15.21\00:10:17.75 You basically beg, and starve, or, you know, 00:10:17.78\00:10:20.95 depending where you live, maybe some beggars or, 00:10:20.98\00:10:24.12 you know, can make a little bit. 00:10:24.15\00:10:25.79 But in remote areas, 00:10:25.82\00:10:28.09 especially if they're in a village 00:10:28.12\00:10:29.46 where everybody's poor, you know, 00:10:29.49\00:10:31.13 they're lucky to get anything. 00:10:31.16\00:10:33.16 So, I think a lot of parents also think about that, 00:10:33.19\00:10:36.83 that, you know, if my child gets a good education, 00:10:36.87\00:10:39.37 it'll also be a blessing to me in my old age. 00:10:39.40\00:10:42.50 Even though Child Impact has changed thousands of lives, 00:10:42.54\00:10:45.81 they are always looking to do more, 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.74 because the need is great. 00:10:47.78\00:10:50.15 And in fact, we want to widen our sponsorship in Nepal, 00:10:50.18\00:10:53.88 because the children of Nepal not only have the poverty cycle 00:10:53.92\00:10:57.92 that they need to break, 00:10:57.95\00:10:59.39 many of them are still suffering 00:10:59.42\00:11:01.19 from previous disasters, like the earthquake. 00:11:01.22\00:11:04.26 And so, a school that they can go to, 00:11:04.29\00:11:07.56 that will stay open and be regular, 00:11:07.60\00:11:09.80 is very important to the needs of the children 00:11:09.83\00:11:13.30 in that area. 00:11:13.34\00:11:14.74 The poverty in Nepal does not have to be permanent. 00:11:14.77\00:11:17.94 Through addressing the medical needs of women, 00:11:17.97\00:11:19.91 they can be restored to their families 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.88 and their communities. 00:11:21.91\00:11:23.81 They will no longer suffer under the crippling pain 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.61 of uterine prolapse, 00:11:26.65\00:11:27.98 thus improving the lives of this generation. 00:11:28.02\00:11:30.79 And through sponsorship, 00:11:30.82\00:11:32.15 the next generation is given the opportunity 00:11:32.19\00:11:34.66 to break the poverty cycle. 00:11:34.69\00:11:36.96 None of this would be possible 00:11:36.99\00:11:38.33 without the support of sponsors like you. 00:11:38.36\00:11:41.16 These children have joy 00:11:41.20\00:11:42.86 because of the hope that you have given them. 00:11:42.90\00:11:45.50 Hello, I'm John T.
