Child Impact International is an organization 00:00:01.46\00:00:04.23 that gives hope and fosters permanent, 00:00:04.27\00:00:06.50 positive change in the lives of disadvantaged children 00:00:06.53\00:00:09.64 and their communities. 00:00:09.67\00:00:12.31 Countries include Zambia, Kenya, 00:00:12.34\00:00:16.41 India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. 00:00:16.44\00:00:21.68 Child Impact's investment in the lives 00:00:21.72\00:00:23.59 of more than 3,500 children 00:00:23.62\00:00:25.92 continues to yield infinite returns. 00:00:25.95\00:00:28.82 Outreach spans from child rescue operations to providing 00:00:28.86\00:00:31.83 an education and a home for deaf and blind children 00:00:31.86\00:00:35.06 and orphans. 00:00:35.10\00:00:36.43 Above all, Child Impact's sponsors 00:00:36.46\00:00:39.07 give hope to the ones who need it the most. 00:00:39.10\00:00:41.60 Bangladesh is a country in South Asia that is almost 00:00:56.89\00:00:59.92 entirely surrounded by India. 00:00:59.95\00:01:02.62 It is the eighth most populous country in the world 00:01:02.66\00:01:05.43 being home to more than 163 million people. 00:01:05.46\00:01:10.30 Even though it boasts a large population, 00:01:10.33\00:01:12.77 it is a fairly small country with a landmass approximately 00:01:12.80\00:01:16.60 the same size as New York State. 00:01:16.64\00:01:19.21 For reference, New York State has approximately 00:01:19.24\00:01:21.51 20 million people. 00:01:21.54\00:01:23.01 Of those 163 million, 00:01:23.04\00:01:25.15 approximately 40% are children. 00:01:25.18\00:01:29.15 Children have it very hard in Bangladesh. 00:01:29.18\00:01:31.65 Many are orphaned and don't have access to schools. 00:01:31.69\00:01:35.42 About 1.7 million are in child labor 00:01:35.46\00:01:38.63 and approximately a fourth of them are between 6 00:01:38.66\00:01:41.46 and 11 years old. 00:01:41.50\00:01:43.63 Child marriages are also an issue. 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.50 While the numbers have reduced, the practice is still common 00:01:46.53\00:01:49.84 and generally accepted. 00:01:49.87\00:01:51.81 One of the best ways of helping to prevent this 00:01:51.84\00:01:54.24 is education and sponsorship. 00:01:54.28\00:01:56.61 In rural Bangladesh, 35% of the population live below 00:01:56.64\00:02:01.82 the poverty line. 00:02:01.85\00:02:03.35 And amongst woman, it's even higher. 00:02:03.39\00:02:06.35 There are statistics like that people only earn $1.98 00:02:06.39\00:02:10.16 a day and the absolute poor are 32% of the population 00:02:10.19\00:02:15.66 and the extreme poor are 19%. 00:02:15.70\00:02:19.33 And both those categories are above poor. 00:02:19.37\00:02:23.14 We've heard from the children the stories of struggle 00:02:23.17\00:02:26.81 of their parents, of their solo mums. 00:02:26.84\00:02:29.84 And we've heard how they've been struggling to feed them. 00:02:29.88\00:02:33.68 And so we see that sponsorship is much greater than education. 00:02:33.72\00:02:38.45 Sponsorship is supporting the family. 00:02:38.49\00:02:41.06 It's giving the parents hope 00:02:41.09\00:02:42.86 and there's a huge benefit to the community. 00:02:42.89\00:02:46.70 Sponsorship is effective and sponsorship 00:02:46.73\00:02:49.70 is making a difference on a wider 00:02:49.73\00:02:51.70 scale here in our program in Bangladesh. 00:02:51.73\00:02:55.94 Milton is one of those whose life has been 00:02:55.97\00:02:57.94 changed by sponsorship. 00:02:57.97\00:03:00.21 I'm here today with a real success story of sponsorship. 00:03:00.24\00:03:03.95 I'm with Milton Das, who was the leader 00:03:03.98\00:03:06.51 of our sponsorship program in Bangladesh, 00:03:06.55\00:03:10.09 and Milton is wearing the Bangladesh flag. 00:03:10.12\00:03:13.76 Milton was a sponsored child right from the beginning 00:03:13.79\00:03:17.23 of his education in a mission school 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.63 all the way through school and then college 00:03:19.66\00:03:22.93 and then he graduated with a degree. 00:03:22.96\00:03:25.40 And now Milton heads up 00:03:25.43\00:03:27.07 the team in Bangladesh that supervise 00:03:27.10\00:03:31.44 the running of our sponsorship program, 00:03:31.47\00:03:33.98 and it's just so great to see a success story of sponsorship. 00:03:34.01\00:03:38.85 And now that we have Milton leading our team in Bangladesh. 00:03:38.88\00:03:44.72 It has changed lives like Milton's that create 00:03:44.75\00:03:47.22 a ripple effect of positive change all around them. 00:03:47.26\00:03:51.53 He was a needy child who was helped by sponsorship 00:03:51.56\00:03:55.00 and now he is helping other needy children 00:03:55.03\00:03:57.53 who will grow up to help those around them. 00:03:57.57\00:04:00.40 A current student who has aspirations 00:04:00.44\00:04:02.67 of helping others is Man Singh. 00:04:02.70\00:04:05.01 He isn't able to visit his home often 00:04:05.04\00:04:07.11 due to how remote it is and the challenges 00:04:07.14\00:04:09.68 of traveling in many parts of Bangladesh. 00:04:09.71\00:04:12.65 Many of the challenges are due to flooding 00:04:12.68\00:04:14.78 and roads that aren't well maintained. 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.52 This is Ruma Bazar, 00:04:30.40\00:04:32.80 and we need to go through a river way. 00:04:32.83\00:04:38.51 There is no road out there. 00:04:38.54\00:04:41.34 It's a wonderful place and we're going to visit. 00:04:53.56\00:04:58.53 Man Singh da Marma is a student 00:05:25.25\00:05:27.59 of BASC being sponsored by Child Impact. 00:05:27.62\00:05:31.03 He is traveling back to his village 00:05:31.06\00:05:32.83 which is about 250 miles away from the school. 00:05:32.86\00:05:36.90 That is a long journey by bus, 00:05:36.93\00:05:38.83 but there are no roads to his village 00:05:38.87\00:05:40.54 because of how remote it is. 00:05:40.57\00:05:42.34 So the last part of his journey is by boat. 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.54 This is Panthala Marma Para, that means 00:05:53.88\00:05:59.09 Panthala Marma Village. 00:05:59.12\00:06:01.29 So we're going to visit Man Singh's house. 00:06:04.56\00:06:09.06 He is our student. 00:06:09.10\00:06:11.07 We had a long travel to meet him up here. 00:06:11.10\00:06:13.64 Man Singh is currently a 10th grade student at Basque. 00:06:18.61\00:06:22.84 So Man Singh is one of our students of Basque, 00:06:22.88\00:06:28.15 and he is currently studying in grade 10. 00:06:28.18\00:06:33.46 And next year, 00:06:33.49\00:06:35.79 we are hoping that he's going to sit for the SSC examination, 00:06:35.82\00:06:39.46 and we pray that he is going to have a successful result. 00:06:39.49\00:06:45.17 And he lives here with his parents. 00:06:45.20\00:06:48.20 And you can see the beautiful village 00:06:48.24\00:06:52.77 where he lives. 00:06:52.81\00:06:55.08 After the short visit, 00:06:55.11\00:06:57.11 we are not going to stay for long. 00:06:57.15\00:06:59.81 We have just come to see his family members, 00:06:59.85\00:07:03.42 his house where he lives. 00:07:03.45\00:07:05.85 This is Man Singh's house. 00:07:15.16\00:07:17.03 So his parents are farmers. 00:07:17.07\00:07:20.20 So, they work hard in the field and, 00:07:20.24\00:07:25.97 I know, grow peanuts. 00:07:26.01\00:07:28.24 And you can see they have some sacks of peanuts. 00:07:28.28\00:07:32.65 His father sells this 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.05 and with these earnings, 00:07:35.08\00:07:38.82 actually, his father, you know, does not earn a lot. 00:07:38.85\00:07:43.73 Whatever he goes, he sells in the market 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.59 and support his child, but this income 00:07:46.63\00:07:52.07 is not sufficient to pay his tuition fees. 00:07:52.10\00:07:55.37 In my family I'm having my dad, mom, 00:07:55.40\00:07:57.47 brothers and brothers-in-law. 00:07:57.51\00:07:59.91 But where are they? I don't see them around. 00:07:59.94\00:08:02.14 Every one of them have gone for Jhum cultivation. 00:08:02.18\00:08:04.75 When are they coming? Will it be late? 00:08:04.78\00:08:06.35 Yes, 5 o'clock, 5 to 5.30. 00:08:06.38\00:08:08.62 We are in such a time when nobody is around. 00:08:08.65\00:08:10.55 Yes, everyone is on work. 00:08:10.59\00:08:13.29 So how much your dad and mom earns? 00:08:13.32\00:08:16.22 Is it enough for your family? 00:08:16.26\00:08:19.16 To run the family, it's difficult for my parents 00:08:19.19\00:08:22.40 because we are four brothers, 00:08:22.43\00:08:23.90 so the earning is not enough to provide our tuitions. 00:08:23.93\00:08:27.74 Since 2012, I'm studying at mission school 00:08:27.77\00:08:31.17 and from 2012 onward, I'm receiving sponsorship. 00:08:31.21\00:08:34.54 Now I'm reading in class 10. 00:08:34.58\00:08:37.01 What's your aim in life? 00:08:37.05\00:08:39.11 My aim in life I mean, I want to be a teacher 00:08:39.15\00:08:42.85 and teach my students. 00:08:42.88\00:08:46.15 Yeah. So as like me? 00:08:46.19\00:08:49.76 Okay, I'm so happy to hear that. 00:08:49.79\00:08:51.76 So I'm praying for you 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.13 so that you may be a successful teacher 00:08:53.16\00:08:55.56 And be successful teacher. 00:08:55.60\00:08:56.97 The progress that Man Singh has achieved shows the power 00:09:44.91\00:09:47.62 of sponsorship and education. 00:09:47.65\00:09:50.12 Since Man Singh is far from any city or school, 00:09:50.15\00:09:53.02 the hope of having a life outside of his village 00:09:53.05\00:09:55.42 would be in vain. 00:09:55.46\00:09:56.86 Man Singh's goal of becoming a teacher shows that changing 00:09:56.89\00:09:59.96 one life does not end there. 00:10:00.00\00:10:02.06 Because he's going to positively change 00:10:02.10\00:10:04.30 the lives of hundreds, if not thousands of future students. 00:10:04.33\00:10:09.87 While there has been great progress in educating 00:10:09.90\00:10:11.97 many poor children in Bangladesh, 00:10:12.01\00:10:14.14 there are still many more that are in need. 00:10:14.18\00:10:17.28 One of the great aspects of my job 00:10:17.31\00:10:19.21 is getting to the field to see what Child Impact does. 00:10:19.25\00:10:22.58 And as you go through the day, just occasionally something 00:10:22.62\00:10:25.75 happens that has a big impact on you. 00:10:25.79\00:10:28.72 And just yesterday, it happened. 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.39 I was standing here at the gate, 00:10:31.43\00:10:33.03 near the gate of the school and a lady came in. 00:10:33.06\00:10:36.36 You can see she was distressed. 00:10:36.40\00:10:38.40 She was crying. 00:10:38.43\00:10:39.87 She wanted to speak to one of the teachers. 00:10:39.90\00:10:42.34 And when she did, tears were rolling down her face. 00:10:42.37\00:10:46.21 I could see that something was wrong. 00:10:46.24\00:10:48.94 And she's a solo mom, her husband has left her, 00:10:48.98\00:10:52.48 run off with another woman to India 00:10:52.51\00:10:54.62 and she is struggling to bring up two girls. 00:10:54.65\00:10:57.75 And to be honest, she has to get out 00:10:57.79\00:10:59.89 and earn some money because she can't feed them 00:10:59.92\00:11:02.46 and look after them. 00:11:02.49\00:11:03.83 She's also worried that they're going to be trafficked 00:11:03.86\00:11:06.59 or taken away from her. 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.70 So she wanted them enrolled in the school. 00:11:08.73\00:11:11.47 She wanted them sponsored. 00:11:11.50\00:11:13.37 And I could see that it wasn't just an education, 00:11:13.40\00:11:16.84 it was giving her hope. 00:11:16.87\00:11:18.64 It was giving her hope that her children could be fed 00:11:18.67\00:11:22.41 and have an education. 00:11:22.44\00:11:24.41 Sponsorship is making a big difference. 00:11:24.45\00:11:26.72 And if you could sponsor a child or you could help with 00:11:26.75\00:11:29.78 the Unsponsored Child Fund, it will make a difference. 00:11:29.82\00:11:35.39 Child Impact's sponsors have accomplished 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.56 many great things in Bangladesh, 00:11:37.59\00:11:40.10 from humanitarian work, 00:11:40.13\00:11:41.70 to education for needy children, 00:11:41.73\00:11:43.70 but always accomplishing the most important thing 00:11:43.73\00:11:46.47 and that is changing minds for God's kingdom. 00:11:46.50\00:11:50.27 But there is still much work to be done. 00:11:50.31\00:11:52.81 Thank you to all the sponsors that are continuing to invest 00:11:52.84\00:11:56.81 in changing lives. 00:11:56.85\00:11:58.25 The video you just watched creates a compelling 00:12:01.32\00:12:03.72 case for child sponsorship. 00:12:03.75\00:12:05.89 My name is Tom Evans, CEO of Child Impact International. 00:12:05.92\00:12:09.76 Why is sponsorships such an effective way to make 00:12:09.79\00:12:12.09 a difference? 00:12:12.13\00:12:13.46 The stories of Milton and Man Singh in this video 00:12:13.50\00:12:15.73 clearly capture this. 00:12:15.76\00:12:17.27 Milton was a child in need 00:12:17.30\00:12:18.93 who was sponsored to attend a mission school. 00:12:18.97\00:12:21.50 Today he is giving back 00:12:21.54\00:12:23.00 and is the field coordinator for over 1000 students 00:12:23.04\00:12:26.37 sponsored by Child Impact. 00:12:26.41\00:12:28.41 Man Singh is currently in year 10 00:12:28.44\00:12:30.21 and has a vision for his life that would not have 00:12:30.25\00:12:33.08 been possible without sponsorship. 00:12:33.11\00:12:35.75 He plans to give back by becoming a teacher. 00:12:35.78\00:12:39.12 The impact one sponsored child opens 00:12:39.15\00:12:42.62 the possibility to thousands being influenced. 00:12:42.66\00:12:46.29 I have some exciting news to share. 00:12:46.33\00:12:47.80 Child Impact has committed to sponsor 00:12:47.83\00:12:50.23 150 new children in Bangladesh 00:12:50.27\00:12:53.54 and there is capacity for 200 more. 00:12:53.57\00:12:56.67 My family personally sponsors a child from Bangladesh, 00:12:56.71\00:12:59.74 and I'd like to invite you to consider doing the same. 00:12:59.77\00:13:02.98 You can select a child on our website childimpact.org 00:13:03.01\00:13:07.45 or by calling our office at (423) 910-0667. 00:13:07.48\00:13:13.42 If you aren't quite ready for that commitment, 00:13:13.46\00:13:15.69 I'd invite you to consider our Unsponsored Child Fund. 00:13:15.72\00:13:19.23 Thank you for the difference 00:13:19.26\00:13:20.60 you're making through sponsorship. 00:13:20.63\00:13:22.66 The full impact will only be known in eternity. 00:13:22.70\00:13:25.93
